RESUMO Objetivo: verificar se há diferença eletromiográfica durante contração voluntária máxima dos músculos masseter e temporal de pacientes com disfunção temporomandibular, antes e após intervenção fonoaudiológica com e sem uso de bandagem elástica terapêutica. Métodos: foi realizada a análise de dados secundários de estudo do tipo intervenção clínica, com 17 voluntárias, adultas, com diagnóstico de disfunção temporomandibular muscular com ou sem deslocamento de disco com redução. O Grupo Bandagem recebeu terapia manual associada à bandagem elástica e o Grupo Sem Bandagem recebeu apenas terapia manual. Foi realizada eletromiografia de superfície para registro da contração voluntária máxima antes e após quatro semanas de intervenção fonoaudiológica. Para análise exploratória foram utilizados os testes: Mann Whitney e Wilcoxon Pareado, com p<0,05. Resultados: no Grupo Bandagem, houve diminuição estatisticamente significante da atividade elétrica durante a Contração Voluntária Máxima nos músculos masseter e temporal do lado esquerdo no momento pós-terapêutico. Na comparação do pré e pós-intervenção entre Grupo Bandagem e Grupo Sem Bandagem, constatou-se diferença estatística nos valores da atividade elétrica de Contração Voluntária Máxima no músculo temporal esquerdo. Conclusão: a terapia fonoaudiológica miofuncional manual, associada ou não ao uso da bandagem elástica terapêutica, impacta a atividade muscular dos músculos masseter e temporal durante a Contração Voluntária Máxima, sejam os valores demonstrando relaxamento e/ou equivalência dos valores eletromiográficos da musculatura mastigatória. ABSTRACT Purpose: to verify if there is an electromyographic difference during maximal (maximum) voluntary contraction of the masseter and temporalis muscles in patients with temporomandibular disorders, before and after speech therapy intervention with and without the use of therapeutic elastic bandages. Methods: an analysis of secondary data from a clinical intervention study, carried out with 17 adult volunteers, diagnosed with temporomandibular muscle dysfunction with or without disc displacement with reduction. RESUMO JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS: Esta pesquisa teve o propósito de avaliar a eficácia da Estimulação Elétrica Nervosa Transcutânea (TENS) combinada com terapia manual em mulheres diagnosticadas com Disfunção Temporomandibular (DTM) muscular com ou sem Deslocamento de Disco com Redução (DDR). O objetivo foi avaliar a ação da terapia manual em conjunto com a TENS como ferramenta terapêutica para tratamentos da DTM, analisando as tarefas eletromiográficas na Contração Voluntária Máxima (CVM) e no repouso, e aferindo os escores da dor com a Escala Analógica Visual (EAV). MÉTODOS: Este estudo possui um desenho de ensaio clínico randomizado cego. No contexto, após a triagem foram investigadas 11 mulheres com diagnóstico de DTM muscular com ou sem DDR, com idades entre 18 e 39 anos. As 11 mulheres foram divididas randomicamente em dois grupos de intervenção, um deles recebendo somente terapia manual e outro grupo recebendo a terapia manual juntamente com a TENS. As participantes foram avaliadas pelos protocolos Critérios de Diagnóstico para Desordens Temporomandibulares (DC/TMD) e MBGR para inclusão e exclusão, por meio da EAV para análise da dor, e da Eletromiografia de Superfície (EMG) para a análise da CVM e do repouso, verificando a ativação muscular. RESULTADOS: Foram observados menores valores da CVM e de repouso após a intervenção em ambos os grupos de intervenção. A aplicação só de terapia manual é tão eficaz quanto o uso de terapia manual em conjunto com a TENS. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) combined with manual therapy in women diagnosed with muscular Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD) with or without Reduced Disc Displacement (RDD). The objective was to evaluate the action of manual therapy in conjunction with TENS as a therapeutic tool for treating TMD, analyzing the electromyographic tasks in MVC and in rest, and measuring pain scores with the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). METHODS: This study has a blinded randomized clinical trial design. In this context, after screening, 11 women with a diagnosis of muscular TMD with or without RDD, aged between 18 and 39 years, were investigated. The 11 women were randomly divided into two intervention groups, one receiving manual therapy alone and the other receiving manual therapy together with TENS. The participants were assessed using the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) and MBGR protocols for inclusion and exclusion, using the VAS to analyze pain, and Surface Electromyography (EMG) to analyze MVC and rest muscle activation. RESULTS: Lower MVC and rest values were observed after the intervention in both intervention groups. Manual therapy alone was as effective as manual therapy combined with TENS. There was no difference between the manual therapy group (MG) and manual therapy+TENS group (TG) in the VAS scores, however when comparing pre- and post-intervention, lower values were observed in the scores of both groups. CONCLUSION: Both groups showed a reduction in pain, but the combination of TENS and manual therapy showed a slight improvement in the stability of the masticatory muscles compared to manual therapy alone. RESUMO Objetivo: comparar o efeito, na atividade elétrica dos músculos supra-hióideos, de duas propostas de realização do acoplamento de língua por mulheres jovens. Métodos: participaram da amostra 47 mulheres, com idade entre 18 e 27 anos, distribuídas nos grupos conforme treino do exercício por 10 e 15 segundos. Foram submetidas a um questionário inicial, avaliação clínica fonoaudiológica, cálculo do índice de Massa Corporal e avaliação eletromiográfica. Para captação do sinal eletromiográfico, foram posicionados bilateralmente sobre a pele dois eletrodos, na região dos músculos supra-hióideos. Foram realizadas as provas de repouso e contração voluntária máxima mediante acoplamento de língua com força máxima, seguidos do treino com acoplamento da língua ao palato por três séries. Os dados coletados foram analisados quanto à atividade mioelétrica nos níveis da amplitude e da frequência, sendo comparados os desempenhos dos dois grupos entre si e dentro de cada grupo através dos Teste ANOVA de Friedmann, One-Way e Teste U-Mann-Whitney. Foi considerado nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: não foi observada significância estatística ao comparar o desempenho das séries entre os grupos, assim como não houve decréscimo da frequência mediana durante a realização das três séries em cada grupo. Conclusão: não foi encontrado efeito na atividade elétrica dos músculos supra-hióideos quando executado treino de exercício isométrico de acoplamento de língua em mulheres jovens.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to compare the effect of two tongue coupling approaches on the electrical activity of the suprahyoid musculature in young women. Methods: the sample comprised 47 women aged 18 to 27 years, distributed into groups, according to exercise training time - 10 and 15 seconds. They answered an initial questionnaire and were submitted to speech-language-hearing clinical assessment, body mass index calculation, and electromyographic assessment. Two electrodes were positioned bilaterally on the skin in the region of the suprahyoid musculature to pick up the electromyographic signal. The women performed the tests with resting periods and maximum voluntary contraction, coupling the tongue with the hard palate as strongly as possible, followed by three training series coupling the tongue with the palate. The collected data regarding amplitude and frequency of the myoelectrical activity were analyzed, by comparing the performance within the two groups and one another with the Friedman and One-Way ANOVA tests, and Mann-Whitney U test, at the 5% significance level. Results: no statistical significance was observed between the groups when comparing their performance in the series, neither was there any decrease in the median frequency in each group while performing the three series. Conclusion: no effect on the electrical activity of the suprahyoid musculature was found in young women when they performed isometric tongue coupling exercise training.

RESUMO Objetivo: analisar a concordância entre a classificação das queixas fonoaudiológicas encontradas na triagem com os resultados das avaliações específicas de cada área em uma clínica-escola de Fonoaudiologia no sul do Brasil. Métodos: estudo descritivo, retrospectivo, de corte transversal, a partir de dados secundários, coletados de 133 prontuários das crianças com idade até 12 anos. A classificação das queixas encontradas nas triagens foi comparada com os diagnósticos atribuídos após a avaliação. Foram classificados 3 grupos: Grupo 1 - totalmente em acordo: Quando houve queixas e diagnósticos idênticos em número e classificação; Grupo 2 - Parcialmente em desacordo: Queixas e diagnósticos iguais, mas havendo outros discordando em número ou em área da Fonoaudiologia; e Grupo 3 - Totalmente em desacordo: Quando houvesse discordância entre queixas e diagnósticos, em número e classificação. Resultados: a prevalência foi de 61% para o sexo masculino. A média de idade foi de sete anos e dois meses. Não houve diferença significante entre os valores dos grupos 1 e 2, 47,4% e 46,6% respectivamente. O grupo 3 teve apenas 6%. As queixas que mais foram relatadas na triagem foram classificadas em Motricidade Orofacial (34,9%), Fala (23,1%), Linguagem (13,4%) e Fonologia (8,6%). Os diagnósticos mais encontrados foram: Motricidade Orofacial (39,8%), Fonologia (20,4%), Linguagem (11,8%), Fala (6,5%). A classificação das queixas e diagnósticos que obtiveram maior concordância foram: Fonologia, Motricidade Orofacial, Disfluência e Linguagem. Apresentou maior discordância a queixa de voz. Conclusão: houve concordância entre os resultados da triagem e do diagnóstico, em número e área fonoaudiológica , sendo que a maior foi referente à classificação de queixas e diagnósticos em Motricidade Orofacial.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze the correlation between the classification of speech pathology findings on screening with the results of specific assessments of each area in a speech pathology university clinic in southern Brazil. Methods: a descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study with secondary data collected from medical records of 133 children under 12 years old. The classification of complaints found during screening were compared with the diagnoses given after evaluation. They were classified into 3 groups: Group 1 - Full correlation: When the complaints and diagnoses were identical in number and classification; Group 2 - Partial correlation: Equal complaints and diagnoses, however, are others disagreeing in number or in the area of Speech Pathology and Group 3 - No correlation: When there was correlation between complaints and / or diagnosis, in number and classification. Results: there was prevalence of 61 % males. The average age was seven years and two months. There was no significant difference between the values of groups 1 and 2: 47.4 % and 46.6 % respectively. Group 3 had only 6 % correlation. The complaints that were reported during screening were classified as Orofacial Motricity (34.9 %), Speech (23.1 %) , Language (13.4%) and Phonology (8.6%). The most frequent diagnoses were : Orofacial Motricity (39.8%), Phonology (20.4%), Language (11.8%), Speech (6.5%). The complaints and diagnoses that had higher correlation were: Phonology, Orofacial Motricity, Stuttering and Language. There was greater disagreement for complaints about voice. Conclusion: there was correlation between the results for screening and diagnosis, in number and speech pathology areas, with the highest values concerning the classification of complaints and diagnoses for Orofacial Motricity.

RESUMO Objetivo Investigar se o uso do biofeedback eletromiográfico na terapia voltada às funções orofaciais (expressão facial, mastigação, deglutição, fonação e fala) produz efeitos benéficos para os indivíduos com doenças neurológicas. Estratégia de pesquisa Foi realizada busca nas bases de dados MEDLINE, LILACS e SciELO, por meio dos descritores “electromyographic biofeedback”, “swallowing”, “speech” “chewing”, “phonation”, e “facial expression”. A busca nas bases de dados e a seleção dos artigos foram realizadas independentemente, por duas pesquisadoras e, nos casos de não concordância, houve discussão fundamentada nos critérios de inclusão e exclusão para que chegassem a um consenso. Critérios de seleção Foram incluídos estudos experimentais em seres humanos, em inglês e português, que descreveram e discutiram a utilização do biofeedback eletromiográfico no tratamento das alterações das funções orofaciais provenientes de doenças neurológicas. Resultados Foram encontrados 175 artigos, sendo que somente 10 se adequaram aos critérios de inclusão. A maioria dos trabalhos relacionou-se a estudo de caso, seguido por estudos de série de casos, caso controle e ensaio clínico randomizado. A maior parte dos artigos abordou a aplicação da terapia com biofeedback eletromiográfico na função da deglutição, seguida da função da fala e apenas um artigo utilizou esta modalidade de tratamento na terapia para melhora da expressão facial. Não foram encontrados estudos que abordassem o tratamento fonoaudiológico utilizando o biofeedback eletromiográfico em pacientes com doenças neurológicas, nas funções de fonação e mastigação. Conclusão O uso do biofeedback eletromiográfico na terapia voltada às funções orofaciais pode produzir efeitos benéficos para os indivíduos com doenças neurológicas, nas funções de deglutição, fala e expressão facial.

ABSTRACT Purpose To determine whether the use of electromyographic biofeedback in the therapy of orofacial functions (facial expression, chewing, swallowing, phonation and speech) will result in beneficial effects for individuals with neurological diseases. Research strategy A keyword search was conducted in the MEDLINE, LILACS and SciELO databases, using the terms “electromyographic biofeedback”, “swallowing”, “speech”, “chewing”, “phonation”, and “facial expression”. The database search and the selection of papers were conducted independently by two researchers. In case of any disagreement, there was a discussion based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, so that they could reach a common ground. Selection criteria This work has included experimental studies in humans, in English and Portuguese, which described and discussed the use of electromyographic biofeedback in the treatment of orofacial function diseases resulting from neurological illness. Results A total of 175 papers were found, wherein only 10 fitted the inclusion criteria. Most works were case studies, followed by case series, case control, and only one randomized controlled trial. Most of studies addressed the therapy with electromyographic biofeedback in the swallowing function, followed by speech function, and only one study addressed the use of electromyographic biofeedback in therapy to improve facial expression. No studies addressing speech therapy using electromyographic biofeedback in patients with neurological diseases in the functions of phonation and chewing were found. Conclusion The use of electromyographic biofeedback in the therapy for orofacial functions can result in beneficial effects for individuals with neurological diseases in the swallowing, speech, and facial expression functions.

RESUMO Objetivo: Analisar a relação entre as medidas lineares antropométricas de crânio e face com as medidas de largura e comprimento do palato duro. Métodos: foram utilizados 23 crânios humanos e as medidas foram obtidas com o auxílio de um paquímetro e um pelvímetro. Foram mensuradas as seguintes medidas lineares: comprimento máximo do crânio, distância biporion, largura facial máxima, altura nasal, comprimento palatino e largura palatina. Resultados: Após a descritiva completa das variáveis, observou-se uma homogeneidade das medidas de crânio, face e palato. Houve correlação, com maior significância, do comprimento palatino e da largura palatina com a largura facial máxima e a distância biporion, respectivamente. A distância biporion foi a única medida que se mostrou significante na explicação, gerando fórmulas para a obtenção do comprimento e de largura palatina. Conclusão: É possível estimar o comprimento e a largura palatina por meio de dois modelos (fórmulas) por meio da medida da distância biporion. Como não existe consenso na literatura, há necessidade de padronização na obtenção das medidas lineares do palato.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the relation between the anthropometric linear measurements of the skull and face and the measurements of width and length of the hard palate. Methods: Twenty-three human skulls were used, and the measurements were collected with the help of a caliper and pelvimeter. The following linear measurements were studied: maximum cranial length, biporion distance, maximum face width, nasal height, palatal length, and palatal width. Results: After a complete descriptive assessment of the variables, we observed homogeneity in the measurements of the skull, face, and palate. There were correlations, with higher significance, between the palatal length and width and the maximum face width and the biporion distance, respectively. The biporion distance was the only measurement that was significant in the explanation, generating formulas to obtain the palatal length and width. Conclusion: It is possible to estimate the palatal length and the palatal width using the two models (formulas) through the measurements of the biporion distance. Because in the literature, there is no consensus, there is a need for standardization when obtaining the linear measurements of the palate.
