Em muitos casos, a relação solo-água-planta, bem como as potencialidades e limitações dos sistemas de irrigação são ignoradas. A agricultura irrigada sustentável requer o desenvolvimento de um sistema de monitoramento da umidade do solo que evite a perda de água e melhore a eficiência do uso. O objetivo deste estudo foi desenvolver e avaliar a eficiência de um sistema inteligente de monitoramento da umidade do solo. O sistema é composto por duas estações: a primeira coleta os dados sobre parâmetros de umidade aparente do solo usando sensores, enquanto a segunda transmite esses dados para uma estação de processamento central. O sistema determina precisamente os valores atuais de umidade do solo, permitindo estimar o volume de água de irrigação necessário para atender à demanda hídrica da cultura com base na capacidade de campo. ABSTRACT Water application to cultivated soil is often done without careful consideration in irrigated agriculture, leading to inefficient or suboptimal water usage. In many instances, the intricate relationship between soil, water, and plants, as well as the potential and limitations of irrigation systems, is overlooked. Sustainable irrigated agriculture necessitates the development of a soil moisture monitoring system that curtails water loss and enhances overall efficiency. This study aimed to develop and assess the efficiency of an intelligent system for monitoring soil moisture. The system comprises two stations: the first collects data on apparent soil moisture parameters using sensors, while the second transmits this data to a central processing station. The system precisely determines current soil moisture values, enabling estimation of the required irrigation water volume to meet the crop’s water demand based on field capacity. Results from the calibration curve of the sensors indicate that the system can measure current soil moisture precisely, aiding in irrigation management. RESUMO O uso de águas salobras na produção agrícola é um dos principais desafios para pesquisadores e produtores rurais, pois sob estresse salino as plantas podem apresentar alterações fisiológicas e nutricionais, que afetam o rendimento das culturas. Com isso, adequada nutrição mineral é fundamental para que as plantas cultivadas sob estresse salino possam expressar seu potencial produtivo. Objetivou-se com o presente estudo avaliar a nutrição mineral e a produção de couve folha hidropônica sob estresse salino e nitrato de cálcio. O experimento foi desenvolvido utilizando um sistema hidropônico em substrato, seguindo o delineamento de blocos casualizados, com cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram compostos por cinco soluções nutritivas, sendo um tratamento controle {S1 = solução nutritiva padrão usando água de baixa salinidade, 0,5 dS/m [750 mg/L de Ca(NO3)2]}, e quatro soluções nutritivas preparadas em águas salobras (6,0 dS/m) contendo quatro concentrações de Ca(NO3)2 (S2 = 750 mg/L, S3 = 1.125 mg/L, S4 = 1.500 mg/L, S5 = 1.875 mg/L). ABSTRACT An adequate use of brackish water in agricultural production is one of the main challenges for researchers and rural producers, since saline stress may cause physiological and nutritional changes in plants, affecting the crop yield. An appropriate mineral nutrition is essential for plants, grown under saline stress, to express their productive potential. The aim of this study was to evaluate the mineral nutrition and hydroponic kale production under saline stress and calcium nitrate. The experiment was carried out using one hydroponic system in substrate, following a randomized block design, with five treatments and four replicates. The treatments consisted of five nutrient solutions, with a control treatment {S1 = standard nutrient solution using low salinity water, 0.5 dS/m [750 mg/L of Ca(NO3)2]}, and four nutrient solutions prepared using brackish water (6.0 dS/m) containing four concentrations of Ca(NO3)2 (S2 = 750 mg/L, S3 = 1,125 mg/L, S4 = 1,500 mg/L, S5 = 1,875 mg/L). We determined the levels of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S in leaf tissue at three evaluation times (50, 64 and 78 DAT). ABSTRACT Lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum) has been attracting great interest due to the beauty of the colors of flowers, the firmness of stems, and postharvest durability. However, knowledge of lisianthus irrigation and fertigation has generally been based on recommendations from other countries. This study aimed to establish parameters for the rational management of lisianthus fertigation under a protected environment by determining the best lower limit of soil moisture, associated with the determination of the optimal potassium concentration to be maintained in the soil solution. The treatments consisted of five soil moisture limits for the start of irrigation and maintenance of five potassium concentrations in the soil solution, with four replications. Plots of 0.7 by 0.5 m were arranged in a completely randomized block design in a factorial scheme. The soil solution was monitored by measuring moisture as well as potassium (K+) concentrations using a TDR100 reflectometer and solution extractors, respectively, during two cycles. The evaluated variables were the leaf area index, shoot fresh and dry matter, commercial yield, and average stem diameter. Lisianthus cultivation under the lower limit of soil moisture equal to 0.20 cm3 cm−3 ensured the best results for all variables of commercial interest. RESUMO A prática da utilização de malhas de diferentes colorações, associada à técnica de fertirrigação, representa um novo conceito agrotecnológico que visa promover respostas fisiológicas específicas ao crescimento e à produção que são reguladas pela luz. Neste sentido, o objetivo da pesquisa foi avaliar o efeito, em cultivo protegido, de malhas fotoconversoras e de concentrações de potássio na solução de fertirrigação sobre o desempenho horticultural da Costus lasius. A pesquisa foi conduzida na Universidade de São Paulo, ESALQ, Piracicaba, SP. Foram realizados três experimentos separadamente, para avaliar cinco concentrações de potássio na solução de fertirrigação (40, 80, 120, 160 e 200 mg L-1) em três colorações de malhas fotoconversoras (vermelha, azul e preta), no delineamento em blocos casualizados com cinco repetições. Foram avaliadas as variáveis altura de planta, número de folhas, caules e botões de flores. Os dados foram submetidos à análise conjunta de experimentos. A associação entre a concentração de 200 mg L-1 de K+ e a malha fotoconversora de cor preta resultou em maior produção de hastes e inflorescências.

ABSTRACT The practice of using different photo-selective nets, associated with the technique of fertigation, represents a new agrotechnological concept that aims to promote specific physiological responses for growth and production, which are regulated by light. The aims of the study were to evaluate the effect of photo-selective nets and potassium concentrations in the fertigation solution on the horticultural performance of Costus lasius. The study was conducted at the Universidade de São Paulo, ESALQ, Piracicaba, SP, Brazil. Three experiments were carried out separately to evaluate five potassium concentrations in the fertigation solution (40, 80, 120, 160 and 200 mg L-1) under three colours of photo-selective nets (red, blue and black) in a randomized block design, with five repetitions. The variables plant height and numbers of leaves, stems and flower buds were evaluated. The data were submitted to the joint analysis of experiments. The association between the K+ concentration of 200 mg L-1 and the black photo-selective net results in higher stem and inflorescence production.

RESUMO A osmose reversa é uma tecnologia amplamente conhecida para purificar as águas dos poços salinos. Devido à geração do rejeito salino nas estações de dessalinização por osmose reversa, a avaliação da vulnerabilidade para definir as áreas críticas de monitoramento das águas do processo de dessalinização tem sido uma ferramenta importante para delinear as redes de monitoramento necessárias para a vigilância de possíveis locais de salinização. Objetivou-se neste estudo avaliar a qualidade das águas amostradas em estações de dessalinização na Mesorregião do Oeste Potiguar Brasileiro por meios de um índice de qualidade capaz de fornecer uma avaliação relativa da vulnerabilidade das águas ao potencial de salinização. O presente estudo propõe um índice de avaliação da qualidade das águas das estações de dessalinização utilizando inicialmente os parâmetros químicos condutividade elétrica, relação de adsorção de sódio, relação Mg2+/Ca2+ e os íons sódio, cloreto e bicarbonato. O índice de avaliação da qualidade das águas das estações de dessalinização apresentou bom desempenho, podendo ser acrescido de parâmetros referentes ao solo e à cultura explorada. Os altos valores de índice relativo de qualidade das águas das estações de dessalinização são apontados como indicadores de possíveis riscos de salinização de solos e de contaminação de aquíferos subterrâneos. O maior grau de impacto do uso da terra em consequência da qualidade das águas de estações de dessalinização foi registrado em amostras de rejeito salino seguidas das águas de poços.

ABSTRACT Reverse osmosis is the technology commonly used to produce fresh water from brackish groundwater. Due to the reject brine generated in desalination plants by reverse osmosis, vulnerability assessment to define critical areas to monitor waters from desalination has been an important tool for delineating the monitoring networks required for surveillance of potential salinization sites. The objective of this study was to assess the quality of waters sampled in desalination plants by a quality index, which provides a relative assessment of water vulnerability to potential salinization. The present study proposes an index to assess the quality of waters from desalination plants initially using the chemical parameters electrical conductivity, sodium adsorption ratio, Mg2+/Ca2+ ratio, and the ions sodium, chloride and bicarbonate. The index to assess quality of waters from desalination plants showed good performance and can include additional parameters referring to the soil and crop exploited. High values of the relative index of quality of waters from desalination plants are considered as possible indicators of risk of soil salinization and groundwater contamination. The highest level of land use impact on the quality of waters from desalination plants was found in reject brine samples followed by well water samples.

No cultivo da cana-de-açúcar, a inundação é um problema sério, particularmente onde os sistemas de drenagem superficiais não são adequados. Foram estudados os índices fisiológicos da cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum sp., cultivar RB 867515) em condições normais e inundadas. Um experimento em ambiente protegido foi conduzido em delineamento de blocos casualizados, arranjado em esquema fatorial (5 x 3 + 1) x 4, quais sejam, 5 velocidades de rebaixamento do nível freático (30 cm de profundidade em 3, 6, 9, 12 e 15 dias) e 3 estádios de desenvolvimento (67, 210 e 305 dias após a plantação- DAP) + um tratamento controle (irrigação sem inundação do solo) com 4 repetições. As análises dos resultados indicam que a inundação do solo nas diferentes velocidades de rebaixamento do nível freático não interferiu nas taxas de crescimento absoluto, de assimilação líquida e de crescimento da cana-de-açúcar. A maior taxa de crescimento relativo e razão de área foliar da cana-de-açúcar foram obtidas quando a inundação do solo ocorreu no período de 210 DAP.

In sugarcane cultivation, waterlogging is an acute problem particularly where surface drainage facilities are not adequate. Physiological indexes were studied in sugarcane (Saccharum sp. cultivar RB 867515 genotype) at normal and logging water. A greenhouse experiment was conducted in a randomized blocks design, arranged in factorial scheme (5 x 3 + 1) x 4, which are, 5 demotion velocities of the water table (30 cm depth in 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 days) and, 3 plant growth stages (67, 210 and 305 days after planting - DAP) + a control (irrigation without waterlogging) with 4 replications. The analysis results indicated that logging water stress condition to different downgrade rate of water table did not interfere on average absolute growth rate, liquid assimilation rate and growth rate of sugarcane. The highest relative growth and leaf area ratio were obtained when water logging soil condition occurs at 210 DAP.

Resumen El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar los efectos del riego con efluente de alcantarillado tratado en el contenido foliar de nitrógeno, fósforo y potasio en el cultivo de algodón (Gossypium hirsutum L. cultivar 8H) en dos tipos de suelos. El experimento fue llevado a cabo en el Campus de la Universidad Federal del Semi-Árido en Mossoró, Brasil. El diseño experimental empleado fue el de bloques al azar con parcelas subdivididas. Los tratamientos consistieron en diluciones del efluente de alcantarillado en agua de abastecimiento [25, 50, 75, 100% de efluente y tratamiento agua de abastecimiento + fertilización mineral del suelo - control] en dos tipos de suelos con diferentes texturas (Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo y Cambissolo). Se concluye que el uso de aguas residuales suple las necesidades nutricionales del cultivo de algodón en lo referente al N y K, excepto para el P.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of irrigation with treated sewage effluent in the leaf content of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. cultivar 8H) growing in two soil types. The experiment was carried out on the campus of the Federal University of the Semi-Arid Mossoró, Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized block with split plots. Treatments consisted of dilutions of domestic sewage effluent with water-supply [25, 50, 75 e 100% effluent and, water-supply + mineral soil fertilization - control] in two different types of soils textures (Oxisol and inceptisol). We conclude that the use of treated sewage effluent supplies the nutritional needs of growing cotton in relation to N and K, except for P.

RESUMO Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, avaliar mudanças nos atributos químicos de um Cambissolo háplico em duas áreas de manejo sustentável da caatinga e em uma área de cultivo agrícola convencional e se optou, para efeito de comparação, pela mata nativa (Caatinga). As áreas foram manejadas da seguinte forma: Nas áreas em que houve manejo sustentável foi feito raleamento na caatinga com sistema de savana (1) e na outra área raleamento em faixas (2); na área de cultivo agrícola convencional foram realizadas queimada, aração e gradagem (3) e a mata nativa (4). Os atributos químicos analisados foram: pH, condutividade elétrica, Ca2+, Mg2+, H + Al, P, Na+, K+ e matéria orgânica do solo (MOS) calculando-se CTC e saturação por bases. Os tratamentos foram avaliados por meio de análises multivariadas, em várias profundidades até 0,52 m. Verificou-se que na área de caatinga raleada em savana e em faixa, houve maior disponibilidade de bases trocáveis e MOS próximos aos 0,20 m de profundidade e na área com agricultura tradicional se restringe a 0,10 m. Na área raleada com sistema de savana o Na apresentou correlação negativa com os demais elementos indicando situação de antagonismo.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate changes in the chemical attributes of an Inceptisol in two areas of sustainable management of the Caatinga Biome and a conventional tillage, compared with the native forest. The areas were managed in the following way: in areas under sustainable management, the Caatinga was thinned in a savanna system (1), and in the other area, the Caatinga was thinned in strips (2); the area under conventional tillage was burned, plowed and harrowed (3), and the native forest (4). The following chemical attributes were analyzed: pH, electrical conductivity, Ca2+, Mg2+, H + Al, P, Na+, K+ and soil organic matter (SOM), calculating CEC and base saturation. The treatments were evaluated using multivariate analysis, at different depths up to 0.52 m. In the Caatinga areas thinned in a savanna system and in strips, the greater availability of exchangeable bases and SOM occurs close to the depth of 0.20 m and, in the area with traditional agriculture, it is limited to 0.10 m. In the area thinned in a savanna system, sodium showed a negative correlation with the other elements.

RESUMO Com o objetivo de estudar a tolerância à salinidade da água de irrigação na minimelancia cv. Smile, um experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação do Departamento de Engenharia de Biossistemas da ESALQ/USP. O delineamento experimental adotado foi em blocos casualizados. As plantas foram irrigadas com cinco níveis de salinidade (S1 = 1,0; S2 = 2,0; S3 = 3,0; S4 = 4,0 e S5 = 5,0 dS m-1). Aos 85 dias após o início do experimento avaliaram-se as plantas e as variáveis físico-químicas dos frutos. A salinidade afetou negativamente as variáveis comprimento do ramo principal, diâmetro do caule, número de folhas, número de ramos secundários, área foliar, massa fresca e massa seca. Para as variáveis físico-químicas dos frutos a salinidade reduziu a massa fresca, o diâmetro e o pH do fruto e elevou o teor de vitamina C. Com os resultados obtidos infere-se que a minimelancia cv. Smile é moderadamente sensível à salinidade.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to evaluate the salt tolerance of mini watermelon (cv. Smile). The experiment was carried out in the greenhouse of the Department of Biosystems Engineering of ESALQ/USP. The experimental design was randomized blocks. The plants were irrigated with five levels of salinity (S1 = 1.0; S2 = 2.0; S3 = 3.0; S4 = 4.0 and S5 = 5.0 dS m-1). At 85 days after the beginning of the experiment, the plants and the physical and chemical variables of the fruit were evaluated. Salinity negatively affected the variables: length of the main stem, stem diameter, number of leaves, number of branches, leaf area, fresh and dry matter. Regarding the physical and chemical characteristics of fruits, salinity reduced the mass, diameter and the pH of the fruit, but increased its vitamin C content. In general, the results suggest that the mini watermelon (cv. Smile) is moderately sensitive to salinity.

No processo de dessalinização se gera, além da água potável, um rejeito altamente salino e de poder poluente elevado, o qual pode ser utilizado na produção agrícola rentável dependendo da adoção de práticas culturais adequadas e da tolerância das plantas às condições salinas. Nos últimos anos a tendência tem sido a substituição da agricultura convencional por sistemas hidropônicos de cultivos, considerados um dos mais eficientes no uso de água. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi analisar a resposta de duas cultivares de alface sob sistema hidropônico de cultivo (Lactuca sativa L., cvs. Verônica e Babá de verão) em diferentes níveis de salinidade da solução nutritiva preparadas com água de abastecimento, água de rejeito coletada no dessalinizador e da sua diluição com água de abastecimento a 75, 50 e 25%, resultando em condutividades elétricas da solução nutritiva (CEs) de 1,1; 2,4; 3,6; 4,7 e 5,7 dS m-1 após as diluições e adição de fertilizantes. Ocorreu variação genotípica sob as variáveis de crescimento e produção da alface, exceto para o número de folhas, sendo a cultivar Babá de verão a que produziu maior rendimento, independentemente do nível de salinidade e, portanto, a cultivar mais tolerante à salinidade da água com rejeito salino.

In desalination process, besides the potable water, highly salty and polluted water (brine) is generated, which can be used for producing profitable crops depending on the adequate cultural practices as well as on the plant ability of reacting to saline conditions. The trend in recent years has been towards conversion of conventional agriculture to soilless agriculture which is considered to be a more efficient use of water system. The aim of this research was to examine the response of two lettuce cultivars (Lactuca sativa L. cvs. Veronica, Babá de verão) under hydroponic system to different levels of salinity of the nutrient solutions prepared with tap water, reject from desalination plant, and its dilution with tap water at 75, 50 and 25%, giving a range of electrical conductivities of the nutrient solution (ECs) of 1.1, 2.4, 3.6, 4.7 and 5.7 dS m-1 after the dilutions and fertilizer addition. Genotypic variation for all analysed variables except number of leaves was observed, and the cultivar Babá de verão produced higher yield regardless of salinity level, therefore more tolerant to water salinity with saline rejects.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a resposta do tomateiro (Lycopersicon esculentum) em cultivo hidropônico, adicionando água de rejeito da dessalinização na composição da solução nutritiva, obtendo-se três níveis de salinidade da solução nutritiva: 7,1; 8,7 e 10,1 dS m-1, além da testemunha (sem adição do rejeito: 2,1 dS m-1), iniciando-se sua aplicação em diferentes estágios de desenvolvimento da cultura: 7; 32 e 58 dias após o transplantio (DAT). O delineamento foi inteiramente casualizado, com 9 tratamentos e três repetições cada, arranjados em um esquema fatorial 3x3 (níveis de salinidade x época de início da aplicação da salinidade), mais a testemunha. A salinidade da solução nutritiva produzida pelo rejeito salino reduziu, de forma significativa, a matéria fresca da parte aérea, matéria seca da parte aérea e a produção dos frutos da cultura do tomate. The objective of this study was to evaluate the response of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) in a hydroponic system, adding water from desalination in the composition of the nutrient solution, resulting in three levels of salinity of nutrient solution: 7,1; 8,7 and 10 ,1 dS m-1, and the control (without addition of water from desalination: 2.1 dS m-1), starting its application at different stages of crop development: 7, 32 and 58 days after transplanting (DAT). The design was completely randomized with 9 treatments and 3 replications, arranged in a 3x3 factorial design (levels of salinity x starting time of the application of salinity), and control. The salinity of the nutrient solution produced by the saline water, significantly reduced the fresh weight of shoot, dry weight of shoots, and fruit production of tomato. The stage of the application of water in the nutrient solution only reduced the dry matter of shoot and fruit yield of tomato, when applied from 7 DAT, while the interaction of these factors did not produce significant effects for the variables.

O experimento foi conduzido no Departamento de Ciências Ambientais da UFERSA, localizado no município de Mossoró, RN, em vasos com substrato de fibra de coco sob condições protegidas. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi blocos ao acaso, com 3 repetições cujos tratamentos corresponderam a cinco níveis de salinidade da solução nutritiva obtidos com ou sem a necessidade de diluição do rejeito da dessalinização da água (2,1; 3,6; 4,9; 6,0 e 7,0 dS m-1). Avaliaram-se: altura de plantas, diâmetro de colo, área foliar, rendimento total e comercial de frutos por planta e, ainda, peso médio de frutos comerciais e totais. Em geral, as variáveis estudadas decresceram linearmente com o incremento da salinidade da solução nutritiva demonstrando que a salinidade da solução com água de rejeito reduz a disponibilidade de água para as plantas, devido ao efeito osmótico.

To use of waster water from desalting in the hydroponic cultivation, an experiment was carried out at the Department of Environmental Science of the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido-UFERSA, in the municipal district of Mossoró-RN, in pots with substrates of coconut fiber under greenhouse conditions. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with three repetitions. Treatments were composed of five levels of salinity of the nutrient solution obtained with, and without, dilution of the waster water from desalting (2.1, 3.6, 4.9, 6.0 and 7.0 dS m-1). The variables plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, mean weight of fruit and total and marketable yield were detemined. In general, the variables decreased linearly with the increase of the salinity of the nutrient solution, showing that the salinity with waster water from desalting reduces the absorption of water by the plants due to the osmotic effect.
