ABSTRACT Understanding how fire affects the plant biota of the Cerrado is essential for formulating conservational strategies. We evaluated the effects of fires during different periods of the year on the populational structure of Anacardium humile. The research was carried out in areas of typical cerrado stricto sensu in the territory of the Kalunga, state of Goiás, Brazil. These areas, which comprise the same population, were submitted to the following treatments: unburned (control), burned in May 2016 (early fire - EF), and burned in September 2016 (late fire - LF). In July 2018, we delimited two contiguous transects of 100 x 20 m, subdivided into 10 plots of 20 x 20 m, in each area. Fire stimulated the development of branches from basal regrowth in EF and LF. No differences were found in height and diameter of individuals among LF, EF, and the control area. Individuals of EF had size patterns similar to the control individuals, indicating a lesser effect of early fire. The greatest differences regarding all significant parameters were found between LF and control individuals. Early prescribed fires, depending on periodicity, may be less harmful to A. humile.

RESUMO Este estudo analisou a estrutura de tamanho, a distribuição espacial e a fenologia dos indivíduos de uma população de Anacardium humile A. St.-Hil. em cerrado sentido restrito. Foram alocadas aleatoriamente quatro parcelas (100 × 100 m cada) na terra Quilombola Kalunga. Dentro das parcelas cada indivíduo foi contabilizado e teve mensurada a altura, diâmetro basal, quantidade de ramos e anotações quanto a sua localização e a presença de afloramentos rochosos. Para a fenologia, dezesseis indivíduos foram monitorados entre maio de 2016 a abril de 2017. Foram inventariados 417 indivíduos que resultaram na densidade média de 104.25 ind ha-1 (± 60,35). A abundância de indivíduos foi maior nos afloramentos rochosos e o padrão de distribuição espacial foi do tipo agregado. A população é auto-regenerativa. As alterações fenológicas concentraram no período seco e foram influenciadas pelas menores taxas de precipitação, temperatura máxima e umidade relativa do ar.

ABSTRACT This study determined the size structure, spatial distribution, and phenology of individuals from a population of Anacardium humile A. St.-Hil. in a cerrado stricto sensu area. Four sample plots (100 × 100 m each) were randomly selected in the Quilombola Kalunga land. Within the plots, we counted the number of individuals and measured the height, basal diameter, number of tree branches and recorded their location and the presence of rocky outcrops. For the phenological analysis, sixteen individuals were monitored between May 2016 and April 2017. A total of 417 individuals were inventoried, which resulted in an average density of 104.25 ind ha-1 (± 60.35). The abundance of individuals was higher in the rocky outcrops and with an aggregate spatial distribution. The population is self-regenerating. Phenological changes were concentrated in the dry season and were influenced by lower precipitation rates, maximum temperature, and relative humidity.

Resumo O manejo do fogo é uma questão importante no Cerrado brasileiro, pois tanto os incêndios antropogênicos de alta intensidade, quanto a sua supressão completa podem reduzir a biodiversidade neste bioma. Neste artigo, destacamos as tendências na literatura científica sobre os efeitos do fogo no Cerrado, com o objetivo de detectar possíveis lacunas e indicar direções de futuras pesquisas científicas. Buscamos artigos na base de periódicos Web of Knowledge no período de 1991 a 2016, e observamos um aumento no número de publicações ao longo dos anos. A maioria dos artigos foi associada a instituições brasileiras (58%), seguidos por colaborações entre instituições brasileiras e internacionais (33%) e publicações de autores exclusivamente de instituições internacionais (9%). A maioria dos artigos abordou os efeitos do fogo na biodiversidade (77%), seguido de artigos sobre o ambiente abiótico (19%), e interações bióticas ou interações entre organismos e o ambiente (4%). O grupo taxonômico mais estudado foi plantas (75%), seguido de mamíferos (8%) e insetos (6%). Os táxons restantes incluem 11% das publicações. O Distrito Federal foi a unidade federativa com o maior número de estudos (31%). A maioria dos estudos foi realizada em áreas com menos queimadas, enquanto as áreas com maior incidência de fogo são mal estudadas. Nossos dados mostram que os estudos sobre o efeito do fogo no Cerrado brasileiro são enviesados do ponto de vista geográfico e taxonômico. Esta falta de conhecimento limita as extrapolações sobre o efeito do fogo neste bioma. Portanto, enfatizamos a necessidade de investimentos para pesquisas em áreas com alta freqüência de queimadas e a necessidade em aumentar o conhecimento sobre estes efeitos na biota, especialmente na fauna. Esta ação é fundamental para apoiar o desenvolvimento de políticas públicas para uma gestão efetiva e direcionada do fogo no Cerrado.

Abstract Fire management is an important issue in the Brazilian Cerrado, since both anthropogenic high intensity fires and complete fire suppression can reduce the biodiversity in this biome. In this paper, we highlight the trends in scientific literature about fire effects in the Cerrado, aiming to detect possible gaps and to indicate directions of future scientific research. We searched for articles in the periodic database Web of Knowledge from 1991 to 2016, and observed an increase in the number of publications throughout the years. Most articles were associated with Brazilian institutions (58%), followed by those with collaboration between Brazilian and international institutions (33%), and those published by authors exclusively from international institutions (9%). Most articles addressed the effects of fire on biodiversity (77%), followed by articles about abiotic environment (19%), and then biotic interactions or interactions between organisms and environment (4%). The most studied taxonomic group was plants (75%), followed by mammals (8%) and insects (6%), with the remaining taxa comprising about 11% of publications. The Federal District was the federative unit with the greatest number of studies (31%). The majority of studies was conducted in areas with fewer fire events, whereas areas with major incidence of fires are poorly studied. Our data shows that studies on the effect of fires on the Brazilian Cerrado are geographically and taxonomically biased. This lack of knowledge limits the extrapolations about the effects of fire on this biome. Therefore, we emphasize the need for investment in research in areas with high fire frequency and also for an increase in knowledge about these effects on the biota, especially on the fauna. This action is fundamental to support the development of public policies for effective and directed fire management in the Cerrado.

RESUMO O conhecimento acerca dos efeitos do fogo na reprodução sexual das espécies lenhosas do Cerrado é fundamental para a elaboração de políticas públicas e de ferramentas de manejo para a sua conservação. O presente estudo avaliou o efeito de uma queima controlada na floração e frutificação de Anacardium humile em ambiente de cerrado sentido restrito, em Cavalcante, GO. Uma área sem registro de fogo há cinco anos foi submetida a queima controlada em maio de 2016 e utilizada como área experimental e suas adjacências protegidas do fogo como áreas controle. Em cada área, 16 indivíduos reprodutivos foram selecionados e sua produção de botões florais, flores e frutos, acompanhada por 17 meses. Em 2016 a produção de estruturas reprodutivas foi maior na área controle, uma vez que a maioria dos indivíduos da área queimada investiu na recuperação das estruturas vegetativas (ramos) danificadas pelo fogo. Apenas três indivíduos floresceram na área queimada em 2016 e apresentaram maior esforço na produção de botões e flores por panícula do que os da área controle, todavia, a taxa de frutificação foi igual entre as áreas. Um ano após a queima a produção das estruturas reprodutivas tornou-se igual entre as áreas. A área controle apresentou maior produção de frutos em 2017 comparada a 2016, indicando padrão variável na produção anual de frutos. O impacto do fogo nas estruturas reprodutivas de A. humile é maior no mesmo ano de queima e seu potencial reprodutivo pode ser normalizado no ano posterior.

ABSTRACT Knowledge about the effects of fire on sexual reproduction of Cerrado woody species is fundamental for elaborating public policies and management plans for its conservation. The present study evaluated the effect of a controlled burning on flowering and fruiting of Anacardium humile in an Cerrado stricto sensu environment, in Cavalcante, GO. An area with no fire records for five years was submitted to controlled burning in May 2016, used as the experimental area and its adjacent areas protected from fire as control area. In each area, 16 reproductive individuals were selected and their production of floral buds, flowers and fruits, followed up for 17 months. In 2016 the production of reproductive structures was higher in the control area, since the majority of individuals of the burned area invested in the recovery of vegetative structures (branches) damaged by fire. Only three individuals flowered in the burned area in 2016 and presented greater effort in the production of buds and flowers per panicle than the individuals in the control area, however, the fruit set was equal between the areas. One year after fire, the production of reproductive structures became equal between areas. The control area presented higher fruit production in 2017 in comparison to 2016, indicating a variable pattern in annual fruit production. The impact of fire on the reproductive structures of A. humile is greater in the same year of fire and its reproductive potential can be normalized in the subsequent year.
