RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento, as trocas gasosas foliares e a colonização por fungos micorrízicos arbusculares em três espécies de plantas medicinais, sob diferentes intensidades de irradiância. Fridericia chica (Bonpl.) L.G. Ohmmann, Mikania laevigata Sch.Bip. ex Baker e Varronia curassavica Jacq. foram propagadas por estaquia e cultivadas por 120 dias em ambientes artificialmente sombreados, utilizando telas do tipo sombrite, em quatro níveis de irradiância, 100%, 70%, 50% e 30%. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 3 x 4 (três espécies de plantas e quatro níveis de irradiação) com sete repetições. As três espécies medicinais avaliadas apresentaram maiores taxas de assimilação líquida, crescimento em massa e colonização radicular por fungos micorrízicos arbusculares quando expostas a ambientes com 70% de disponibilidade de luz. Em relação às respostas fisiológicas, V. curassavica apresentou maior taxa fotossintética, condutância estomática e transpiração quando submetidas a 70% de irradiância, podendo ser cultivada em ambientes mais abertos e com maiores níveis de radiação. Por outro lado, F. chica e M. laevigata apresentaram características de plantas tolerantes à sombra. Os resultados obtidos na fase inicial de crescimento podem ser utilizados como um indicador para recomendar o ambiente de plantio dessas três espécies medicinais em sistemas agroflorestais.

ABSTRACT: This study o evaluated growth, leaf gas exchange and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi root colonization in three medicinal plant species under different irradiance intensities. Fridericia chica (Bonpl.) L.G.Lohmann, Mikania laevigata Sch.Bip. ex Baker and Varronia curassavica Jacq. were propagated by cutting and cultivated for 120 days in artificially shaded environments using black shade-type screens, obtaining four irradiance levels: 100%, 70%, 50% and 30%. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 3 x 4 factorial scheme (three plant species and four irradiation levels) with seven replicates. The three medicinal species showed higher liquid assimilation, mass growth and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi root colonization rates when exposed to environments with 70% light availability. In relation to physiological responses, V. curassavica presented higher photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration when submitted to 70% irradiance, being able to be cultivated in more open environments with higher irradiation levels. Conversely F. chica and M. laevigata presented shade tolerance characteristics. At the initial growth phase, the results obtained can be used as indicators to recommend the ideal cultivation environment for these species in agroforestry systems.

ABSTRACT Regularly spaced earth mounds called “murundus” are scattered in several landscapes in the semi-arid region of Brazil. Although recent evidence indicates that termites are involved in the building of murundus, the contribution of these insects to soil-forming processes in those structures remains poorly understood. In this study, we tested a set of hypotheses to examine whether there are consistent evidence for suggesting the participation of termites in the formation of murundus soils. Morphological and physicochemical features of murundus were compared with adjacent soil profiles in the inter-mounds surface and one epigeic nest built by one species of Syntermes Holmgren. The murundus soils had a more clayey texture, higher contents of nutrients (C, N, P, K, Ca, and Mg) and organic matter compared with adjacent soils. We identified a set of recent and ancient traces inside the murundus that reveals the intense building activity of termite colonies (e.g., galleries, tunnels, and royal chambers), confirming that these structures are not only occupied by these insects but also built-up by them. Taken together, our results provide hard evidence that the long-term activity of mound-building termites was the hierarchically dominant process in producing murundus structures in the semi-arid region of Brazil. Based on available empirical data, we propose an explanatory model on how that construction process may have taken place.

RESUMO: A rosa do deserto (Adenium obesum) é uma planta suculenta nativa da Península Arábica, apresenta grande valor comercial, com estrutura e floração exuberante. Sua propagação pode ser por meio de sementes para garantir o maior desenvolvimento do caudex. Apesar do alto valor econômico ainda se requerem estudos para sua propagação. O objetivo foi avaliar o desempenho germinativo de sementes e desenvolvimento de mudas de rosa-do-deserto em diferentes substratos. Os tratamentos constaram em cinco diferentes composições de substrato: S1 (Terra), S2 (Areia), S3 (substrato comercial Carolina Soil), S4 (Areia+ Carolina Soil) e S5 (Terra + Carolina Soil). Foram avaliados com abordagem uni e multivariada: germinação, primeira contagem, índice de velocidade de germinação, diâmetro do caudex, número de folhas, comprimento da plântula, comprimento da raiz, comprimento da parte aérea, massa fresca e massa seca. A areia é o substrato ideal para a germinação de sementes de A. obesum, enquanto que para a formação das mudas deve-se utilizar as misturas do substrato comercial Carolina Soil com areia ou terra.

ABSTRACT: Desert rose (Adenium obesum) is a succulent plant that is native to the Arabian Peninsula. It has great commercial value with exuberant structure and flowering. It can be propagated by seeds to ensure maximum development of the caudex. Despite its high economic value, studies on its propagation are still required. The aim of this study was to evaluate seed germination performance and seedling development of desert rose seedlings in different substrates. Treatments comprised five different substrate compositions: S1 (Soil), S2 (Sand), S3 (Carolina Soil commercial substrate), S4 (Sand + Carolina Soil), and S5 (Soil+ Carolina Soil). The following were evaluated using uni- and multi-variate approaches: germination, first count, germination speed index, caudex diameter, number of leaves, seedling length, root length, shoot length, and fresh mass and dry mass. Sand is the ideal substrate for the germination of A. obesum seeds, while for forming seedlings, mixtures of the Carolina Soil commercial substrate with sand or soil should be used.

RESUMO Fridericia chica (Bonpl.) L. G. Lohmann apresenta propriedades medicinais e potencial para cultivo comercial; entretanto, as características de propagação dessa espécie são pouco estudadas. Objetivou-se avaliar o tamanho da estaca, doses de ácido indolbutírico (AIB) e substratos contendo diferentes proporções de casca de cacau, na estaquia de F. chica. Foram realizados dois experimentos. No primeiro, os tratamentos foram estacas basais de 10 cm e 20 cm de comprimento e quatro concentrações de AIB (0 mg L-1, 2.000 mg L-1, 4.000 mg L-1 e 6.000 mg L-1). No segundo, foram testados substratos obtidos de cinco proporções de compostagem de casca de cacau (CC) e vermiculita expandida (VE): 100 % CC; 100 % VE; 50 % CC + 50 % VE; 30 % CC + 70 % VE; e 70 % CC + 30 % VE. Avaliaram-se o percentual de enraizamento, altura da brotação e produção de biomassa seca. A produção de mudas de F. chica pode ser realizada por estacas basais com 20 cm de comprimento, que permitem alcançar 91 % de enraizamento. A dose ideal de AIB para obter o máximo comprimento de broto é 3.600 mg L-1. As misturas de 50 % CC + 50 % VE e 30 % CC + 70 % VE foram os melhores substratos para a produção de mudas da espécie.

ABSTRACT Fridericia chica (Bonpl.) L. G. Lohmann has medicinal properties and potential for commercial cultivation; however, the propagation characteristics of this species have been poorly evaluated. This study aimed to analyze the length of cuttings, indolebutyric acid (IBA) doses and substrates containing different proportions of cocoa shell in F. chica cuttings. Two experiments were carried out. In the first one, the treatments were basal cuttings of 10 cm and 20 cm in length and four IBA concentrations (0 mg L-1, 2,000 mg L-1, 4,000 mg L-1 and 6,000 mg L-1). In the second experiment, substrates obtained from five proportions of cocoa shell (CS) and expanded vermiculite (EV) compost were tested: 100 % CS; 100 % EV; 50 % CS + 50% EV; 30 % CS + 70 % EV; 70 % CS + 30 % EV. The rooting percentage, sprouting height and dry biomass production were evaluated. The production of F. chica seedlings can be performed by basal cuttings with 20 cm in length, which allow achieving a rooting rate of 91 %. The ideal IBA dose to obtain a maximum sprout length is 3,600 mg L-1. Mixtures composed of 50 % CS + 50 % EV and 30 % CS + 70 % EV were the best substrates for the production of F. chica seedlings.

Resumo O tempo de formação de mudas de mangostanzeiro propagadas por sementes pode ser encarado como o maior gargalo no sistema de produção de mudas dessa espécie. Considerando que o uso de ácidos húmicos como promotor de crescimento vem sendo bem documentado em algumas espécies, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento de mudas seminais de mangostanzeiro em resposta à aplicação de doses de ácidos húmicos (AH) extraídos de vermicomposto (0; 2; 20; 40; 200 mg C L-1). A avaliação do crescimento foi realizada por meio das variáveis diâmetro do coleto, altura das plantas, número de folhas, área foliar, matéria seca do caule, matéria seca da folha, matéria seca da parte aérea, matéria seca da raiz, matéria seca total e Índice de qualidade de Dickson. A dose de 150 mg C L-1 foi a que mais se aproximou dos valores máximos e portanto deve ser recomendada para a produção de mudas. Os resultados, aos 240 dias após o plantio (DAP), demonstraram que os AHs incrementam o crescimento de mudas de mangostanzeiro, auxiliando na redução do tempo de formação de mudas em condições para plantio definitivo.

Abstract The time of formation of mangosteen seedlings propagated by seeds can be considered as the biggest difficulty in the seedling production system of this species. Considering that the use of humic acids as a growth promoter has been well documented in some species, the objective of this work was to evaluate the growth of mangosteen seedlings in response to the application of humic acid (HA) doses extracted from vermicompost (0; 2; 20; 40; 200 mg C L-1). Growth rate was determined using the following variables: stem diameter, plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, stem dry matter, leaf dry matter, shoot dry matter, root dry matter, total dry matter and Dickson quality index . The dose 150 mg C L-1 was the one that approached the maximum values and therefore should be recommended for the production of seedlings. The results at 240 days after planting (DAP) showed that the HA increased the growth of mangosteen seedlings, helping to reduce the time of seedling formation under conditions for permanent planting.

Resumo A propagação vegetativa em cacaueiro foi iniciada na América Central no início do século passado. No entanto, somente no final do século essa técnica foi intensificada no estado da Bahia onde se verificou que mudas de propagação vegetativa elevam o rendimento de áreas de cultivo do cacaueiro, especialmente aquelas que usam outras tecnologias associadas às mudas clonais. O uso de jardim clonal para coletar hastes em viveiro pode reduzir em até 80% o espaço necessário para manutenção das plantas matrizes. Por outro lado, estacas de uma gema obtidas de ramos plagiotrópicos e ortotrópicos melhoram os protocolos de enraizamento e reduzem custos de produção das mudas. Dentre os desafios atuais e futuros da produção de mudas de cacaueiros destacam-se o uso da embriogênese somática e a escolha de porta-enxertos com resistência a doenças. Essas tecnologias buscam elevar a produtividade do cultivo e fazer o Brasil retornar a condição de exportador de amêndoas e derivados do cacau, o que não ocorre há mais de duas décadas.

Abstract The vegetative propagation in cacao has been used in Central America since the beginning of the last century. However, only from the end of the century this technique has been intensified in the state of Bahia, where vegetative propagation changes have increased the yield of cocoa growing areas, especially those using other technologies associated with clonal seedlings. The use of clonal garden to collect stems in nursery can reduce by 80% the space required for maintenance of stock plants. On the other hand, the buds obtained from orthotropic and plagiotropic shoots are used to improve the performance protocols and reduce production costs of seedlings. Among the current and future challenges in the production of cocoa seedlings emphasizes the somatic embryogenesis and rootstock with disease resistance. These technologies to increase the productivity of the crop and permit Brazil return to the exporter condition of cocoa beans, which does not occur for more than two decades.

Resumo Um entrave para a produção de mudas do mangostanzeiro (Garcinia mangostana L.) é o prolongado tempo de viveiro de aproximadamente dois anos. Dentre outros fatores, a identificação de um substrato adequado à produção de mudas dessa espécie é fator preponderante para reduzir o tempo de viveiro. Este estudo objetivou avaliar o crescimento de mudas seminais de mangostanzeiro cultivadas em quatro diferentes composições de substrato. A avaliação do crescimento foi realizada por meio das variáveis diâmetro do coleto, altura das plantas, número de folhas, área foliar, matéria seca do caule, matéria seca da folha, matéria seca da parte aérea, matéria seca da raiz, matéria seca total e Índice de Qualidade de Dickson (IQD). O substrato S1 (turfa de sphagnum e vermiculita) foi superior aos substratos S2 (casca de pínus e vermiculita), S3 (casca de pínus e fibra de coco) e S4 (solo) em todos os parâmetros avaliados. A análise de componentes principais separou os tratamentos em três grupos de resposta, em que o S1 foi o que exerceu maior influência sobre as variáveis de crescimento, concluindo ser este, dentre os substratos testados, o mais adequado para formação de mudas de mangostão.

Abstract An obstacle to the production of mangosteen seedlings (Garcinia mangostana L.) is the long nursery time of approximately two years. Among other factors, the identification of a suitable substrate for seedling production from this species is a preponderant factor to reduce nursery time. This study aimed to evaluate the growth of seminal mangosteen seedlings grown in four different substrate compositions. Growth rate was determined using the following variables: stem diameter, plant height, stem dry mass, leaf dry mass, shoot dry mass, root dry mass, total dry mass and Dickson Quality Index (DQI). The substrate S1 (sphagnum turf and vermiculite) was superior to substrates S2 (pinus bark and vermiculite), S3 (pinus bark and coconut fiber) and S4 (soil) in all evaluated parameters. The principal component analysis separated the treatments into three response groups, in which S1 exerted the greatest influence on the growth variables, concluding that this one of the substrates tested was the most adequate for the formation of mangosteen seedlings.

RESUMO A aplicação de substâncias promotoras de crescimento, a exemplo dos ácidos húmicos, no desenvolvimento de mudas frutíferas pode beneficiar o crescimento e potencializar a absorção e translocação de nutrientes na planta. Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da aplicação de doses de ácidos húmicos (0 mg L-1; 2 mg L-1; 20 mg L-1; 40 mg L-1; 200 mg L-1) extraídos de vermicomposto de torta de filtro de cana-de-açúcar na absorção de nutrientes de mudas seminais de mangostanzeiro (Garcinia mangostana L.). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com 7 repetições para cada tratamento. A aplicação dos ácidos húmicos promoveu incrementos com taxas quadráticas para o conteúdo de N, P, K, Ca, Mg e S da parte aérea e raiz, bem como incrementos de natureza quadrática no teor dos nutrientes Zn e Mn na parte aérea. A aplicação de ácidos húmicos elevou os teores de clorofila a e clorofila b e reduziu o teor de carotenoides. De forma geral, a análise de regressão demonstrou que uma dose 150 mg L-1 é capaz de proporcionar a absorção de nutrientes mais adequada pelas plantas, e deve ser recomendada para a produção de mudas de mangostanzeiro. Ácidos húmicos de vermicomposto podem propiciar uma nutrição mais adequada a mudas de mangostanzeiro em fase de viveiro.

ABSTRACT The application of growth promoting substances, such as humic acids, during the formation of fruit seedlings can benefit growth and increase the plant nutrient uptake and translocation. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the application of humic acid doses (0 mg L-1, 2 mg L-1, 20 mg L-1, 40 mg L-1 and 200 mg L-1) extracted from vermicompost of sugarcane filter cake on the nutrient uptake of seminal mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) seedlings. The experimental design was completely randomized, with 7 replicates for each treatment. The application of humic acids promoted curvilinear increments with quadratic rates for N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S contents from shoots and roots, as well as quadratic increments in the Zn and Mn uptake by shoots. The application of humic acids increased the chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b contents and reduced the carotenoid content. Overall, the regression analysis demonstrated that a dose of 150 mg L-1 is capable of providing the most adequate nutrient uptake by plants, and should be recommended for the production of mangosteen seedlings. Humic acids from vermicompost can provide a better nutrition in mangosteen seedlings at the nursery stage.

RESUMO A utilização de compostos orgânicos e a inoculação de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMA) são alternativas de manejo em sistemas orgânicos de produção. Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da inoculação de FMA (Acaulospora scrobiculata, Acaulospora colombiana e sem inoculação) e de composto orgânico da casca de cacau (0 g dm-3, 5 g dm-3, 10 g dm-3, 20 g dm-3 e 30 g dm-3), na eficiência micorrízica e absorção de nutrientes, em mudas seminais de gravioleira tipo 'Morada'. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com 4 repetições, em esquema fatorial 3 x 5 (FMA x composto orgânico). Observou-se maior eficiência micorrízica do isolado A. colombiana, com a adição de 0 g dm-3, 5 g dm-3 e 10 g dm-3 de composto orgânico ao solo, em relação a A. scrobiculata, o qual diferiu estatisticamente nas doses de 20 g dm-3 e 30 g dm-3 de composto orgânico. A inoculação de FMA promove incrementos nos teores de N, P, K, Zn, Cu, Fe e Mn, quando comparada a plantas sem inoculação. O composto orgânico exerce efeito sobre a inoculação, principalmente sobre a absorção de P. A inoculação com FMA, aliada à adubação orgânica, promove o crescimento e a nutrição das mudas.

ABSTRACT The use of organic composts and the inoculation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are management alternatives in organic production systems. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of AMF inoculation (Acaulospora scrobiculata, Acaulospora colombiana and without inoculation) and organic compost of cacao bark (0 g dm-3, 5 g dm-3, 10 g dm-3, 20 g dm-3 and 30 g dm-3) on the mycorrhizal efficiency and nutrient uptake, in 'Morada' soursop seedlings. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 3 x 5 factorial arrangement (AMF x organic compost), with four replicates. A higher mycorrhizal efficiency was observed for the A. colombiana isolate, with the addition of 0 g dm-3, 5 g dm-3 and 10 g dm-3 of organic compost to the soil, in relation to the A. scrobiculata isolate, which differed statistically at the doses of 20 g dm-3 and 30 g dm-3 of organic compost. The AMF inoculation promotes increases in the N, P, K, Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn contents, when compared to plants without inoculation. The organic compost exerts an effect on the inoculation, mainly on the absorption of P. The AMF inoculation, together with the organic fertilization, promotes the growth and nutrition of seedlings.

Resumo Foi avaliada a influência de dois manejos no rendimento e na qualidade de miniestacas plagiotrópicas de quatro clones de cacaueiro. O delineamento utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 4 x 2, sendo 4 clones x 2 manejos da planta- matriz (poda apical e envergamento), com 10 repetições e uma planta como unidade experimental. As plantas-matrizes usadas foram propagadas por enraizamento de estacas semilenhosas de ramos plagiotrópicos, e, aos sete meses de idade, duas mudas de cada clone foram transplantadas para vasos de 12 L preenchidos com substrato organomineral. Após o transplante, foi realizado o corte do ápice de uma das plantas, baseado na contagem das seis primeiras folhas a partir do ápice. Para o envergamento, os caules foram dobrados e fixados em posição horizontal. A primeira coleta de miniestacas foi realizada 30 dias após o transplante, e as outras, durante os sete meses seguintes. O rendimento de miniestacas foi contabilizado nas coletas, e parte foi usada para enraizamento e avaliação da qualidade de mudas. Após 90 dias de enraizadas, 10 miniestacas enraizadas de cada clone foram avaliadas quanto à qualidade, usando-se como referência o índice de qualidade de Dickson (IQD). Outras 10 miniestacas enraizadas foram transplantadas para sacos de polietileno de 1,5 L e mantidas em casa de vegetação por mais 120 dias, até à avaliação final da qualidade, aos 210 dias. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e ao teste de Tukey, a 5% de probabilidade. Foi realizado teste de normalidade de Shapiro-Wilk e análise de correlação de Pearson. O manejo com envergamento foi mais eficiente na produção média de miniestacas, especialmente para o clone BN 34. O índice de qualidade de Dickson foi correlacionado com a massa seca da raiz, tanto aos 90 quanto aos 210 dias, sendo o envergamento responsável pelos melhores IQDs. A variável altura não se mostrou adequada para estimar a qualidade de mudas de cacaueiro.

Abstract The influence of two managements on yield and quality of plagiotropic mini-cuttings of four cacao clones was evaluated. The design was completely randomized in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme with 4 clones x 2 mother plant management (apical pruning and bending), with 10 replicates and one plant as experimental unit. Seedlings used were propagated by rooting of semi-woody cuttings of plagiotropic branches and at seven months of age, two seedlings of each clone were transplanted to 12 L pots filled with organomineral substrate. After transplantation, the apex of one of the plants was cut based on the count of the first six leaves from the apex. For bending, stems were folded and horizontally fixed. The first collection of mini-cuttings was performed 30 days after transplantation and the others during the following seven months. The yield of mini-cuttings was estimated during collections and part was used for rooting and quality evaluation of seedlings. After 90 days, 10 mini-cuttings of each clone were evaluated for quality using the Dickson quality index (DQI). Another 10 rooted mini-cuttings were transplanted to 1.5 L polyethylene bags and kept in greenhouse for another 120 days until final quality evaluation at 210 days. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey test at 5% probability. Shapiro-Wilk normality test and Pearson correlation analysis were performed. bending was more efficient in the average production of mini-cuttings especially for BN 34 clone. The Dickson quality index was correlated with root dry mass, at both 90 and 210 days, and the bending technique was responsible for the best DQI. Variable height was not adequate to estimate the quality of cocoa seedlings.

Resumo O estudo objetivou avaliar o efeito da inoculação de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMA - Acaulospora scrobiculata, Acaulospora colombiana, e a mistura desses inóculos) e de doses do composto orgânico da casca de cacau (0; 5; 10; 20 e 30 g dm-3) em mudas seminais de gravioleira tipo ‘Morada’. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados, com 4 blocos, e em esquema fatorial 5 x 4 (FMA x Composto orgânico). Após 120 dias de crescimento, observou-se que a inoculação com FMA promoveu maior altura, diâmetro do coleto, biomassa seca da parte aérea, da raiz e total. O composto orgânico estimulou a colonização micorrízica e o número de esporos com a adição de até 10 g dm-3. A inoculação micorrízica promoveu incremento no teor de P na folha da gravioleira. As plantas-controle não apresentaram resposta adequada às doses do composto orgânico aplicadas, concluindo-se que a inoculação com o FMA, aliada à adubação orgânica, promoveu o crescimento e a nutrição de mudas de gravioleira.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi inoculation (AMF - Acaulospora scrobiculata, Acaulospora colombiana and the mixture of these inocula) and doses of organic compost obtained from cocoa shell (0, 5, 10, 20 and 30 g dm-3) on “Morada” soursop seedlings. The experimental design was a randomized block with 4 blocks in a 5 x 4 factorial scheme (AMF x organic compost). After 120 days of growth, it was observed that AMF inoculation increased height, stem diameter and shoot, root and total dry biomass. Organic compost stimulated mycorrhizal colonization and the number of spores with the addition up to 10 g dm-3. Mycorrhizal inoculation promoted increases of P content in soursop leaves. Control plants did not show adequate response to doses of the organic compost applied and it was concluded that AMF inoculation combined with organic compost increased the growth and nutrition of soursop plants.

RESUMO: As plantas medicinais são geralmente comercializadas secas, no entanto, as temperaturas utilizadas nos processos de secagem podem interferir no teor e composição química dos óleos essenciais destas plantas. A Lippia origanoides possui timol em seu óleo essencial, que se encontra armazenado em tricomas glandulares. O timol é um componente majoritário de importância econômica na indústria química e farmacêutica. O objetivo do trabalho foi estudar o efeito das temperaturas de secagem de folhas de L. origanoides na integridade dos tricomas, teor e composição química do óleo essencial. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com quatro tratamentos definidos por temperaturas de secagem em estufa (40ºC, 50ºC, 60ºC e 70ºC) e quatro repetições. Foram realizadas extrações por hidrodestilação e determinação dos teores dos óleos essenciais (%), análise de composição química do óleo por cromatografia gasosa acoplada à espectrometria de massas e microscopia eletrônica de varredura para determinação da integridade dos tricomas. A secagem das folhas de L. origanoides em estufa de ventilação forçada a 40ºC minimizou a perda do teor de óleo essencial extraído (17,5g kg-1) e porcentagem relativa de timol. Folhas secas em temperatura de 60 e 70ºC exibiram maior porcentagem de tricomas rompidos e redução do teor de óleo essencial para 13,7g kg-1 e 11,8g kg-1, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT: Medicinal plants are generally commercialized dried. However, temperatures used in their drying processes may interfere with the content and chemical composition of their essential oils. The Lippia origanoides possesses thymol in the essential oil that is stored in glandular trichomes. Thymol is a major component of economic importance in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the drying temperatures of L. origanoides leaves regarding trichome integrity, content, and chemical composition of the essential oil. The experimental design was completely randomized with four treatments defined by oven drying temperatures (40, 50, 60, and 70ºC) and four replications. Essential oil was extracted by hydro distillation and the essential oil contents were determined (%). Chemical composition of the oil was analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Scanning electron microscopy was carried out to determine trichome integrity. Drying the L. origanoides leaves in a forced ventilation oven at 40°C minimized the loss of extracted essential oil content (17.5g kg-1) and relative thymol percentage. Leaves dried at the temperatures of 60 and 70ºC exhibited a higher percentage of ruptured trichomes and reduced essential oil content to 13.7g kg-1 and 11.8g kg-1, respectively.

ABSTRACT: Current technical and scientific challenges for cacao cultivation involve the need to evalúate numerous attributes related to primary production and quality criteria. The study was conducted with the cacao clone PH-16, in the humid zone of the cacao región of Bahia, Brazil. The objective was to know the influence of the place of cultivation on the physical and Chemical variables, before and after the cacao grains have fermented. The Chemical variables that are more liable to be influenced by the environment are the pH and overall acidity of the grains with mucilage, as well as the pH, overall acidity, and pigment rate of fermented grains. Cultivation areas with latosol dystrophic yellow argisol, in the agro-forestry Cabruca System, with a mean density of 35 shade trees per hectare, had the best grains, quality-wise.

RESUMEN: Los desafíos técnicos y científicos actuales para el cultivo del cacao implican la necesidad de evaluar múltiples atributos relacionados con la producción primaria y con los criterios de calidad. El estudio se realizó con el clon de cacao PH-16 en la zona húmeda de la región cacaotera de Bahia, Brasil. El objetivo fue conocer la influencia del sitio de cultivo sobre las variables físicas y químicas antes y después de la fermentación de los granos de cacao. Las variables químicas más influenciadas por el medio ambiente fueron el pH y la acidez total de los granos con mucílago, y el pH, acidez total e índice de pigmentos de los granos fermentados. El sitio de cultivo que corresponde al Argisol Amarillo Distrófico latosólico, en el sistema agroforestal Cabruca con densidad media de 35 árboles de sombra por hectárea, presentó los granos con mejores atributos de calidad.

ABSTRACT: The use of management zones has ensured yield success for numerous agricultural crops. In spite of this potential, studies applying precision agricultural techniques to cacao plantations are scarce or almost nonexistent. The aim of the present study was to delineate management zones for cacao crop, create maps combining soil physical properties and cacao tree yield, and identify what combinations best fit within the soil chemical properties. The study was conducted in 2014 on a cacao plantation in a Nitossolo Háplico Eutrófico (Rhodic Paleudult) in Bahia, Brazil. Soil samples were collected in a regular sampling grid with 120 sampling points in the 0.00-0.20 m soil layer, and pH(H2O), P, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, H+Al, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, SB, V, TOC, effective CEC, CEC at pH 7.0, coarse sand, fine sand, clay, and silt were determined. Yield was measured in all the 120 points every month and stratified into annual, harvest, and early-harvest cacao yields. Data were subjected to geostatistical analysis, followed by ordinary kriging interpolation. The management zones were defined through a Fuzzy K-Means algorithm for combinations between soil physical properties and cacao tree yield. Concordance analysis was carried out between the delineated zones and soil chemical properties using Kappa coefficients. The zones that best classified the soil chemical properties were defined from the early-harvest cacao yield map associated with the clay or sand fractions. Silt content proved to be an inadequate variable for defining management zones for cacao production. The delineated management zones described the spatial variability of the soil chemical properties, and are therefore important for site-specific management in the cacao crop.

RESUMO Os teores de Zn em solos tropicais influenciam profundamente o sobre crescimento e a nutrição de culturas arbóreas. Esta pesquisa foi realizada para avaliar o efeito de Zn no solo sobre o crescimento e a nutrição de mudas clonais de cacau da variedade PH 16. Três Latossolos ácidos com diferentes texturas foram adubados com nove doses de Zn (0; 1; 2; 4; 8; 16; 32; 48 e 64 mg dm-3). Mudas clonais enraizadas foram cultivadas em vasos de plástico com 11 dm-3 dos solos com níveis variáveis de Zn, por 240 dias. Na colheita, o crescimento (massa de matéria seca de folhas, caules, brotos, raízes e total) e os teores de macro e micronutrientes foram determinados. As mudas clonais de cacau apresentaram diferenças para a produção de massa de matéria seca e teores de nutrientes foliares para P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, Zn e Cu. Houve toxidez de Zn em todos os solos.

ABSTRACT Levels of Zn in tropical soils profoundly influences growth and nutrition of tree crops. Research was undertaken to assess the effect of soil Zn on growth and nutrition of clonal cacao tree seedlings of PH 16. Three acidic Oxisol soils differing in texture were used with nine doses of Zn (0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 48, and 64 mg dm-3). Rooted clonal seedlings were grown in plastic pot with 11 dm-3 of the soils at varying Zn levels for 240 days. At harvest growth (dry matter mass of leaves, stems, shoots, roots, and total) and nutrient concentrations were determined. The clonal cacao seedlings showed differences for production of dry matter mass and foliar nutrient concentrations for P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, Zn, and Cu. There was Zn toxicity in all soils.
