A maioria das ocorrências de D. lutzi em anfíbios anuros é relatada em espécies com hábitos arborícolas, com estudos que se restringem a registros da presença do oligoqueta no hospedeiro. Este estudo recuperou espécimes de D. lutzi das pererecas Scinax fuscovarius e Scinax nasicus. Foi realizada uma avaliação morfológica do parasito por microscopia de luz e, pela primeira vez, por microscopia eletrônica de varredura. A caracterização molecular de D. lutzi foi realizada com o gene mitocondrial 16S rRNA e o gene nuclear 28S rRNA. Além disso, uma árvore filogenética foi construída para avaliar a posição da espécie em relação a outros membros do grupo. Abstract The oligochaete Dero lutzi follows a life strategy that alternates between free-living periods in aquatic environments and endoparasitic phases. Most occurrences of D. lutzi in anurans are reported in species with arboreal habits, with studies limited to the recording of the oligochaete’s presence in the host. Our study recovered specimens of D. lutzi from the tree frogs Scinax fuscovarius and Scinax. nasicus. We performed a morphological assessment of the parasite using light microscopy, for the first time, scanning electron microscopy. Molecular characterization of D. lutzi was carried out using the mitochondrial gene 16S rRNA and the nuclear gene 28S rRNA. Additionally, a phylogenetic tree was constructed to assess the species´position in relation to other group members. In our results, we confirmed the phenotypic morphological characteristics of the endoparasitic phase of D. lutzi. Resumo Introdução A manutenção da saúde bucal em pacientes internados é essencial, especialmente para evitar complicações decorrentes da doença periodontal, que não apenas afetam a saúde bucal, mas também podem agravar problemas sistêmicos durante a hospitalização. Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o conhecimento da equipe de enfermagem em relação ao manejo da doença periodontal e sua associação com doenças sistêmicas. Material e método Este estudo observacional transversal foi conduzido em um hospital geral de referência do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) do Brasil. Um total de 504 profissionais de enfermagem completaram um questionário autoaplicável com 24 questões, abordando procedimentos de cuidados bucais e a importância da saúde bucal em pacientes hospitalizados. Os dados foram analisados por meio de análise descritiva e teste qui-quadrado (α = 0,05). Resultado A maioria dos entrevistados (97,8%) acreditava que infecções bucais podem afetar a saúde geral do paciente e que a higiene bucal é importante durante a hospitalização. Abstract Introduction The maintenance of oral health in inpatients is essential, particularly to avoid complications arising from periodontal disease, which not only affect oral health but can also exacerbate systemic issues during hospitalization. Objective: This study aimed to assess nursing staff’s knowledge regarding the management of periodontal disease and its association with systemic diseases. Material and method This cross-sectional observational study was conducted in a general referral hospital of the Brazilian National Health System (SUS). A total of 504 nursing professionals completed a self-administered 24-item questionnaire on relating to oral care procedures and the importance of oral health in hospitalized patients. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and the chi-squared test (α = 0.05). Aim This study was performed to compare two different rat defect models (critical calvaria defects versus guided bone regeneration in the mandibular ramus) used to evaluate bone repair in grafted areas. Methods A total of 12 rats were allocated in two groups according the experimental model used to evaluate the bone repair in grafted areas: a critical sized-calvaria defect of 5 mm filled with bone graft (n=6) and a mandibular ramus filled with the bone graft associated with a Teflon dome-shaped membrane (n=6). Both groups were grafted with deproteinized bovine bone graft. After 60 days, the animals were euthanized and the samples obtained were submitted to histomorphometry analysis to evaluate the relative amount of bone, remaining bone substitute, and soft tissue within the grafted areas. Results No differences were observed between the preclinical models evaluated in relation to the amount of bone tissue formation (19.93 ± 4.55% in calvaria vs. 21.00 ± 8.20% in mandible). However, there was a smaller amount of soft tissue (43.20 ± 10.97% vs. 57.79 ± 7.61 %; p<0.01) and a greater amount of bone substitute remaining (35.80 ± 5.52% vs. 22.28 ± 4.36 %; p<0.05) in the grafted areas in the mandible compared to calvaria defect. Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos de diferentes protocolos de raspagem na morfologia e rugosidade do substrato de dentina radicular exposto à radiação ionizante. Cento e trinta incisivos bovinos extraídos foram divididos aleatoriamente em dois grupos (n = 65): não irradiados (NIR) e irradiados (IR). Cada grupo foi subdividido em seis subgrupos de acordo com o tipo de protocolo periodontal não cirúrgico: NIT: sem instrumentação; NIT/PP: profilaxia com pasta profilática fina usando uma taça de borracha por 15 segundos; HS: raspagem manual com 15 movimentos de instrumento apical-coronal; HS/PP: raspagem manual seguida de protocolo de profilaxia; US: raspagem ultrassônica com 15 ciclos apical-coronais; US/PP: raspagem ultrassônica seguida de protocolo de profilaxia. Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different scaling protocols on the morphology and roughness of the root dentin substrate exposure to ionizing radiation. One hundred and thirty extracted bovine incisors were randomly divided into two groups (n=65): non-irradiated (NIR) and irradiated (IR). Each group was initially subdivided into three subgroups according to the type of non-surgical periodontal protocol: NIT: no instrumentation; HS: hand scaling with 15 apical-coronal instrument movements; US: ultrasonic scaling with 15 apical-coronal cycles. Subsequently, all samples were subjected to the prophylaxis protocol, being subdivided into the following groups: NIT/PP: prophylaxis with a fine prophylactic paste using a rubber cup for 15 seconds; HS/PP: Hand scaling followed by the prophylaxis protocol; US/PP: Ultrasonic scaling followed by the prophylaxis protocol. The roughness of the root dentin surface was measured with a profilometer (Ra/Rz - μm), and the morphology of the dentin surfaces was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a single dose of ionizing radiation (30 Gy) on the osseointegration of implants in the rabbit tibia. Twenty rabbits received two dental Morse-tapered junction implants and one implant in each tibia. The animals were randomly divided into two groups (n=10), non-irradiated (NoIr) and irradiated (Ir), wherein the Ir group received a single dose of 30 Gy radiation 2 weeks after implant installation. Microtomographic analyses (BV/TV) and histomorphometric assessments (BIC and BABT) were performed 4 weeks after implant installation. One-way ANOVA, Tukey's test, and Student's t-test (α=0.05) were used for data analysis. The results showed that BV/TV did not differ significantly between the Ir and NoIr groups (P = 0.071). Abstract This study aimed to investigate whether two acquisition parameters, voxel size and filter thickness, used in a micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scan, together with the examiner’s experience, influence the outcome of bone repair analysis in an experimental model. Bone defects were created in rat tibiae and scanned using two voxel sizes of 6- or 12-µm and two aluminum filter thickness of 0.5- or 1-mm. Then, bone volume fraction (BV/TV) and trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) were analyzed twice by two groups of operators: experienced and inexperienced examiners. For BV/TV, no significant differences were found between scanning voxel sizes of 6 and 12 µm for the experienced examiners; however, for the inexperienced examiners, the analysis performed using a 12-µm voxel size resulted in higher BV/TV values (32.4 and 32.9) than those acquired using a 6-µm voxel size (25.4 and 24.8) (p < 0.05). For Tb.Th, no significant differences between the analyses performed by experienced and inexperienced groups were observed when using the 6-µm voxel size. However, inexperienced examiners’ analysis revealed higher Tb.Th values when using the 12-µm voxel size compared with 6 µm (0.05 vs. 0.03, p < 0.05). Aim To discuss important topics regarding the dental procedures performed in patients before, during and after the radiotherapy treatment. The biological effects of ionizing radiation on bone tissue focusing on clinical care will be described. The invasive and not invasive procedures after radiotherapy treatment in the head and neck region will be addressed using scientific evidences to determine the appropriate moment for tooth extractions, periodontal management, and preventive procedures for osteoradionecrosis. Abstract: This study aimed to compare the use of connective tissue grafts (CTG) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) associated with the tunnel technique (TT) for the treatment of multiple gingival recessions (GR). Fourteen patients with multiple bilateral GR [type 1 recession (RT 1)] in the maxillary incisors, canines, and/or premolars were included. The TT was performed on both sides (split-mouth model); CTG (36 GR) was used on one side, and on the other, PRF (36 GR) was used. Clinical parameters, including recession depth (RD), probing depth, clinical attachment level (CAL), and keratinized gingiva thickness/width (GT/KTW), were obtained at baseline and after 1, 3, 6, and 16 months. Lower RD (0.81 ± 0.68 vs. 1.23 ± 0.71 mm) and CAL (2.54 ± 0.63 vs. 2.73 ± 0.82 mm) were observed for CTG compared to PRF after 16 months. Higher GT was obtained for CTG compared to PRF after 3 (1.81 ± 0.56 vs 1.43 ± 0.47 mm) and 6 months (1.67 ± 0.61 vs. 1.38 ± 0.55 mm, p < 0.05). Abstract This systematic review evaluated the potential utility of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in bone repair in animals. The question is: can the use of PRF in bone defects in healthy rats induce bone repair compared to clot? This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (Prisma). The protocol was registered with Prospero (CRD [42020162319]). The literature search involved nine databases, including grey literature. All studies evaluated the bone defects created in rats filled with PRF and clots (control). Biomaterial evaluation was also performed in this study. The risk of bias was assessed using the Systematic Review Center for Laboratory Animal Experimentation (Syrcle) tool for animal studies. A meta-analysis of quantitative data was performed to estimate the effect of PRF on bone repair in rats. Heterogeneity among the studies was assessed using the I2 statistic. The literature search retrieved 685 studies, 10 of which fulfilled the eligibility criteria, and 4 were included in the quantitative assessment. Analysis of the risk of bias revealed that most studies had a high risk of bias in performance and detection. Meta-analysis yielded divergent results and the absence of a statistically significant effect: PRF with control (standardized mean difference 2.54, 95% confidence interval -0.80–5.89; p = 0.14). In general, study heterogeneity was high (I2 ≥ 75.0%). The quality of the studies that influenced the conclusion of the review was based on the PICO, the sources and form of the search, the study selection criteria, the form of evaluation of publication bias, the evaluation of the quality of the studies, and data extraction by two researchers. PRF did not provide significant benefits for bone repair, resulting in unpredictable effects.

Abstract The aim of this scoping review was to provide sufficient information about the effectiveness of ozone gas in virus inactivation of surfaces and objects under different environmental conditions. The review was performed according to the list of PRISMA SrC recommendations and the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis for Scoping Reviews. The review was registered in Open Science Framework (OSF). EMBASE (Ovid), Lilacs, LIVIVO, MEDLINE (PubMed), SciELO, Scopus and Web of Science were primary sources, and “gray literature” was searched in OpenGray and OpenThesis. A study was included if it reported primary data on the effect of ozone gas application for vehicle-borne and airborne virus inactivation. No language or publication date restriction was applied. The search was conduct on July 1, 2020. A total of 16,120 studies were screened, and after exclusion of noneligible studies, fifteen studies fulfilled all selection criteria. Application of ozone gas varied in terms of concentration, ozone exposure period and the devices used to generate ozone gas. Twelve studies showed positive results for inactivation of different virus types, including bacteriophages, SARS-CoV-2 surrogates and other vehicle-borne viruses. Most of the studies were classified as unclear regarding sponsorship status. Although most of the population has not yet been vaccinated against COVID-19, disinfection of environments, surfaces, and objects is an essential prevention strategy to control the spread of this disease. The results of this Scoping Review demonstrate that ozone gas is promising for viral disinfection of surfaces.

Resumo Este estudo avaliou os efeitos do cimento de ionômero de vidro (GIC) e da resina composta fluida bulk fill (BFRC) usados como preenchimento da câmara pulpar; e o tipo de iluminação das turbinas de alta rotação na remoção dentinária após cavidades de acesso para retratamento endodôntico em dentes molares. Vinte molares superiores foram tratados endodonticamente. Dez dentes foram restaurados usando BFRC (Opus Bulk Fill Flow APS, FGM) para preencher a câmara pulpar e dentina coronária; e resina composta convencional (Opallis, FGM) para restaurar a camada de esmalte. Os outros dentes foram restaurados usando GIC (Maxion R, FGM) para preencher a câmara pulpar e resina composta (Opallis, FGM). As amostras foram divididas em dois grupos e os canais radiculares foram novamente acessados com turbina de alta-rotação com iluminação branca ou ultravioleta. Os dentes foram escaneados usando micro-CT antes e após o novo acesso ao canal radicular. O volume de dentina removida foi calculado e os dados foram analisados por ANOVA bidirecional e teste de Tukey (α=0,05). As regiões na coroa e na câmara pulpar que apresentaram dentina removida no acesso dos canais foram descritas por meio de distribuição por frequência. A reabertura do canal radicular com GIC resultou em menos paredes afetadas da câmara pulpar e menor volume de dentina removida no assoalho. Nenhum efeito foi observado nas paredes de dentina coronária considerando aos protocolos de preenchimento. A turbina de alta rotação com iluminação branca reduziu a remoção de dentina da câmara pulpar, independentemente do protocolo de restauração utilizado. O uso de turbina de alta rotação com iluminação branca e GIC para preencher a câmara pulpar reduziram a remoção de dentina do assoalho e afetaram menos paredes dentinárias.

Abstract This study evaluated the effect of the use of glass ionomer cement (GIC) and flowable bulk-fill resin composite (BFRC) for filling pulp chambers and the type of high-speed handpiece light used on dentin removal during access preparation for endodontic retreatment in molar teeth. Twenty maxillary molars were treated endodontically. BFRC (Opus Bulk Fill Flow APS, FGM) was used to fill the pulp chamber and replace coronal dentin (n = 10). In the remaining teeth, the pulp chamber was filled with GIC (Maxion R, FGM). Conventional resin composite (Opallis, FGM) was used to restore the enamel layer in all teeth. The samples in each group were divided into two subgroups, and the root canals were reaccessed using a handpiece with white or ultraviolet light. The teeth were scanned using micro-CT before and after root canal reaccess. The dentin volume removed was calculated and analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance and Tukey’s test (α = 0.05). The crown and pulp chamber locations with dentin removal are described using frequency distribution. During the access, fewer pulp chamber walls were affected and a lower volume of dentin was removed from the pulpal floor in the group restored with GIC than in the group restored with BFRC. No effect was observed on the coronal dentin walls with respect to the filling protocols and type of light used. For dentin removal from the pulp chamber, handpieces with white light performed better than those with ultraviolet light, irrespective of the filling protocol used. The use of GIC to fill the pulp chamber and use of white handpiece light reduced dentin removal from the pulpal floor and resulted in fewer affected dentin walls.

Resumo Com o objetivo de avaliar a microarquitetura óssea cortical e a morfologia dos osteons após irradiação, foram utilizados doze coelhos machos da Nova Zelândia. Os animais foram divididos: grupo controle (sem radiação-NIr); e 3 grupos irradiados, sacrificados após: 7 (Ir7d); 14 (Ir14d) e 21 (Ir21d) dias. Foi utilizada uma dose única de radiação de 30 Gy. A microtomografia computadorizada analisou a microarquitetura cortical: espessura cortical (CtTh), volume ósseo (BV), porosidade total (Ct.Po), porosidade intracortical (CtPo-cl), número de canal/ poro (Po.N), dimensão fractal (DF) e grau de anisotropia (Ct.DA). Após a varredura, a morfologia dos osteosn foi avaliada histologicamente por meio de: Área e perímetro do osteon (O.Ar; O.p) e dos canais de Havers (C.Ar; C.p). A análise microtomográfica foi realizada por ANOVA, seguida pelos testes de Tukey e Dunnet. As análises morfológicas do osteon foram realizadas por Kruskal-Wallis e testadas por Dunn. A espessura cortical foi diferente (p<0,010) entre os grupos controle e irradiados, com córtex mais espesso no Ir7d (1,15±0,09). A porosidade intracortical revelou diferenças significativas (p<0,001) entre os grupos irradiados e o controle, com menor valor para Ir7d (0,29±0,09). O volume ósseo foi menor no Ir14d em relação ao controle. Área e perímetro do osteon foi diferente (p<0,0001) entre o controle e Ir7d. Os canais haversianos também revelaram valores mais baixos (p<0,0001) em Ir7d (80.57±9.3; 31.63±6.5) em relação ao controle e demais grupos irradiados. A microarquitetura cortical é afetada pela radiação e os efeitos parecem ser dependentes do tempo, principalmente em relação à morfologia dos osteons nos dias iniciais. A estrutura cortical em Ir21d revelou semelhanças com o controle, sugerindo que a microarquitetura se assemelha à condição normal após um período.

Abstract Aiming to evaluate cortical bone microarchitecture and osteonal morphology after irradiation, twelve male New Zealand rabbits were used. The animals were divided: control group (no radiation-NIr); and 3 irradiated groups, sacrificed after: 7 (Ir7d); 14 (Ir14d) and 21 (Ir21d) days. A single radiation dose of 30 Gy was used. Computed microtomography analyzed the cortical microarchitecture: cortical thickness (CtTh), bone volume (BV), total porosity (Ct.Po), intracortical porosity (CtPo-cl), channel/pore number (Po.N), fractal dimension (FD) and degree of anisotropy (Ct.DA). After scan, osteonal morphology was histologically assessed by means: area and perimeter of the osteons (O.Ar; O.p) and of the Haversian canals (C.Ar; C.p). Microtomographic analysis were performed by ANOVA, followed by Tukey and Dunnet tests. Osteon morphology analyses were performed by Kruskal-Wallis, and test Dunn’s. Cortical thickness was significant difference (p<0.010) between the NIr and irradiated groups, with thicker cortex at Ir7d (1.15±0.09). The intracortical porosity revealed significant difference (p<0.001) between irradiated groups and NIr, with lower value for Ir7d (0.29±0.09). Bone volume was lower in Ir14d compared to control. Area and perimeter of the osteons were statistically different (p<0.0001) between NIr and Ir7d. Haversian canals also revealed lower values (p<0.0001) in Ir7d (80.57±9.3; 31.63±6.5) compared to NIr and irradiated groups. Cortical microarchitecture was affected by radiation, and the effects appear to be time-dependent, mostly regarding the osteons morphology at the initial days. Cortex structure in Ir21d revealed similarities to control suggesting that microarchitecture resembles normal condition after a period.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different post space irrigation protocols for removing residual filling material from dentin walls, by using microcomputed tomography (micro-CT), and the influence of these protocols on dentin microhardness. Bovine incisors (n = 35) were filled with the single-cone technique and MTA Fillapex (Angelus, Londrina, PR, Brazil). Post space preparation (PSP) was performed 7 days after filling, using the Odous Touch electrical system (Odous De Deus Ind. e Com., Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil), followed by post space irrigation using manual irrigation, passive ultrasonic irrigation, or Easy Clean, together with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), or with 2.5% NaOCl and 17% EDTA (NaOCl/EDTA). Micro-CT scans were performed at three time points. The residual filling material was evaluated at three levels: cervical, middle and apical. The Knoop test was measured with four indentations around the canal lumen at three dentin depths: X (100 μm), Y (200 μm) and Z (400 μm). Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA (p < 0.05). The effects of the activation method (p < 0.001), and the root level (p = 0.013), as well as the interaction between the irrigant and the activation method (p = 0.041), led to different percentages of residual filling material. Lower amounts of residual filling material were observed at the cervical versus the middle and apical levels (p < 0.05). No significant differences were observed in dentin microhardness (p > 0.05). The best removal of the residual filling material was performed using the Easy Clean tip and NaOCl/EDTA, regardless of the activation methods.

Abstract: Three-point bending test is the most common mechanical test used for quantifying the biomechanical quality of bone tissue and bone healing in small animals. However, there is a lack of standardization for evaluation of bone repair by cortical perforation. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of bone defect position in the proximal metaphysis of rat tibias during load application and different span configuration on the three-point bending test outcomes. Cortical defects with 1.6 mm diameter were created at a standardized location on the medial surface of 60 tibias of male Wistar rats. The animals were euthanized 7 days after surgery. Five specimens were used to create 3D models for finite element analysis using high-resolution micro-CT images. Two spans (6 and 10mm) and three positions of the bone defect in relation to the load application (upward, frontal and downward) were evaluated experimentally (n = 10) and in finite element analysis (n = 5). Maximum load (N) and stiffness (N/mm) were statistically analyzed with 2-way ANOVA and Tukey test (α = 0.05). The results demonstrated that span and orientation of the bone defect significantly influenced the fracture pattern, stress distribution and force versus displacement relation. Therefore, reliable outcome can be achieved creating the bone defect at 8 mm from the extremity of the proximal epiphysis; placing a 10 mm distance span and downward facing defect position to allow a better distribution of stress and more fracture patterns that reached the bone defect target area with less intra-group variability.

Resumo A rápida progressão das lesões de cárie nos dentes molares permanentes de pacientes jovens, frequentemente resulta no tratamento endodôntico. Este ensaio clinico randomizado cego avaliou o efeito de dois cimentos endodônticos (Sealer 26 e AH Plus) na incidência de dor e reparo apical após tratamento endodôntico de dentes molares jovens e identificar fatores associados aos desfechos do tratamento. O tratamento endodôntico foi realizado por estudantes de graduação em dentes molares permanentes (n=69) de pacientes jovens (n=54) na Clínica de Extensão Endodôntica e Restauradora da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia, Brasil. Protaper Next foi usado e os dois cimentos foram distribuídos aleatoriamente nas amostras, as quais foram restauradas com resina composta direta. Dois desfechos clínicos primários - reparo apical e dor pós-operatória foram avaliados após 12 e 24 meses por operadores de forma cega. Análise longitudinal dos dados incluiu a descrição das taxas de incidência e modelo de regressão misto usando Equações de Estimativa Generalizadas (GEE). As incidências (%) do reparo apical e dos dentes assintomáticos foram respectivamente 90,5/89,3 e 96,8/90,0 nos períodos de 1 e 2 anos de acompanhamento. Ausência de reparo apical foi associada com pulpectomia insatisfatória (p=0,003) e condições periapicais (p=0,007), bem como sua interação (p=0,016). Nenhuma dessas variáveis independentes foi capaz de prever a ocorrência de dor nos períodos de acompanhamento. O tratamento endodôntico mostrou resultados satisfatórios após 2 anos. O prognóstico do reparo apical depende das condições iniciais. Nenhum efeito do cimento endodôntico foi observado. O tratamento endodôntico de molares jovens associado com restaurações em resina composta realizado por estudantes de graduação tem um papel relevante na redução do risco de perda do dente permanente.

Abstract The progression of caries in permanent molar teeth of young patients, frequently result in endodontic treatment. This randomized blinded clinical trial assessed the effect of two endodontic sealers (Sealer 26 and AH Plus) on the incidence of pain and apical repair after endodontic treatment of young molar teeth, and secondly identify factors associated with the outcomes. Endodontic treatment was performed by undergraduate students in molar teeth (n=69) of young patients (n=54) at the Endodontic and Restorative Public Extension Clinic Service. Protaper Next was used and the endodontic sealers were allocated which were restored with direct composite resin. Two primary clinical outcomes - apical repair and postoperative pain, were assessed after 12 and 24 months for blinded operators. Description of incidence rates and mixed-model regression using Generalized Estimation Equations (GEE). After 2 years 69 molar teeth of 54 patients were evaluated. No effect of the endodontic sealer was observed irrespective of period of evaluation. Apical repair incidences and asymptomatic teeth were, respectively, 90.5 and 89.3, 96.8 and 90.0% during 1 and 2 years of follow-up. Failed apical repair was associated with unsatisfactory pulpectomy (p=0.003) and periapical conditions (p=0.007) as well as their interaction (p=0.016). None of these independent variables was able to predict the occurrence of pain in both periods. Prognosis of apical repair is dependent on the initial conditions. Endodontic treatment of young molars associated with composite resin restorations performed by undergraduate students have satisfactory results after 2 years and was effective to prevent the risk of permanent teeth loss.
