ABSTRACT: Okra is a vegetable that stands out for its low production cost, high yield, high nutritional and value and socioeconomic importance in income generation, especially in family farming. In this context, the present study evaluated the physiology, production and water use efficiency of okra under irrigation with saline water and exogenous application of hydrogen peroxide. The treatments were distributed in a randomized block design, in a 5 × 3 factorial arrangement, with five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water - ECw (0.3; 1.3; 2.3; 3.3 and 4.3 dS m-1) and three concentrations of hydrogen peroxide - H2O2 (0, 25 and 50 μM), with five replicates, totaling 75 plants. Irrigation with ECw above 0.3 dS m-1 negatively affected stomatal conductance, transpiration, number of fruits, total production and water use efficiency of okra cv. Clemson Americano 80. Hydrogen peroxide at concentration of 22 μM mitigated the effects of salt stress on CO2 assimilation rate, number of fruits, average fruit weight and total production of okra cv. Clemson Americano 80. Water use efficiency is favored by H2O2 application at concentration of 12 μM, especially in plants irrigated with ECw of 0.3 dS m-1.

RESUMO: O quiabeiro é uma hortaliça que se destaca pelo baixo custo de produção, elevada produtividade, alto valor nutricional e pela importância socioeconômica na geração de renda, principalmente na agricultura familiar. Nesse contexto, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a fisiologia, a produção e a eficiência no uso da água de quiabeiro sob irrigação com águas salinas e aplicação exógena de peróxido de hidrogênio. Os tratamentos foram distribuídos no delineamento de blocos casualizados, em arranjo fatorial 5 × 3, sendo cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação (0,3; 1,3; 2,3; 3,3 e 4,3 dS m-1) e três concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio (0, 25 e 50 μM), com cinco repetições, totalizando 75 plantas. A irrigação com CEa acima de 0,3 dS m-1 afetou negativamente a condutância estomática, a transpiração, o número de frutos, a produção total e a eficiência no uso da água do quiabeiro cv. Clemson Americano 80. O peróxido de hidrogênio na concentração de 22 μM amenizou os efeitos do estresse salino sobre a taxa de assimilação de CO2, número de frutos, peso médio de frutos e produção total de quiabeiro cv. Clemson Americano 80. A eficiência no uso da água é beneficiada pela aplicação de peróxido de hidrogênio na concentração de 12 μM, sobretudo nas plantas irrigadas com CEa de 0,3 dS m-1.

ABSTRACT: Water scarcity associated with irregular rainfall in the semi-arid region of Northeastern Brazil stands out as a limiting factor for agricultural production. Thus, the use of waters with high concentration of salts is an alternative to expand irrigated agriculture in this region. In this context, this study evaluated the water status, intercellular electrolyte leakage, photosynthetic pigments, and gas exchange of ‘BRS SC1’ sour passion fruit as a function of irrigation with water of different levels of salinity and potassium doses. The experiment was carried out in pots adapted as drainage lysimeters under field conditions at the Experimental Farm of the Federal University of Campina Grande in São Domingos - PB, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in a 5 × 4 factorial scheme, whose treatments were obtained by combining two factors: five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water - ECw (0.3, 1.1, 1.9, 2.7, and 3.5 dS m-1), associated with four potassium doses (60, 80, 100, and 120% of the recommendation), with three replicates. Water with electrical conductivity greater than 0.3 dS m-1 reduced the relative water content, chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b contents, CO2 assimilation rate, and instantaneous water use efficiency of ‘BRS SC1’ sour passion fruit plants. The estimated potassium dose of 85% of the recommendation (equivalent to 293 g per plant per year) mitigated the deleterious effects of salt stress on stomatal conductance, transpiration, internal CO2 concentration, and instantaneous carboxylation efficiency of passion fruit ‘BRS SC1’.

RESUMO: A escassez de água associada à irregularidade das precipitações no semiárido do Nordeste brasileiro destaca-se como fator limitante para produção agrícola. Assim, o uso de águas com elevadas concentrações de sais é uma alternativa para expandir a agricultura irrigada nesta região. Neste contexto, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar os status hídrico, o extravasamento de eletrólitos, os pigmentos fotossintéticos e as trocas gasosas do maracujazeiro-azedo ‘BRS SC1’ em função da irrigação com águas de diferentes salinidades e doses de potássio. O experimento foi desenvolvido em vasos adaptados como lisímetros de drenagem sob condições de campo na Fazenda Experimental da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande em São Domingos - PB. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 5 × 4, cujos tratamentos foram construídos pela combinação de dois fatores: cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CEa (0,3; 1,1; 1,9; 2,7 e 3,5 dS m-1), associados a quatro doses de potássio (60; 80; 100 e 120% da recomendação), com três repetições. A água de condutividade elétrica superior a 0,3 dS m-1 reduziu o conteúdo relativo de água, os teores de clorofila a e b, a taxa de assimilação de CO2 e a eficiência instantânea no uso da água das plantas de maracujazeiro-azedo ‘BRS SC1’. A dose de potássio estimada de 85% da recomendação (equivalente a 293 g por planta ano), amenizou os efeitos deletérios do estresse salino sobre a condutância estomática, transpiração, concentração interna de CO2 e eficiência instantânea de carboxilação do maracujazeiro-azedo ‘BRS SC1’.

ABSTRACT Brazil is one of the largest cashew producers in the world, and its Northeast region stands out. However, cashew growth and development are negatively affected by irrigation with brackish water in its production. In this context, strategies have been employed to alleviate salt stress effects on plants. Among the strategies, the exogenous application of elicitor substances, such as salicylic acid, has stood out. Given the above, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of foliar application of salicylic acid as an attenuator of salt stress on the morphophysiology of early dwarf cashew. The study was carried out in a greenhouse, in a randomized block design, in a 5 × 4 factorial arrangement, with five levels of electrical conductivity of the irrigation water - ECw (0.4, 1.2, 2.0, 2.8, and 3.6 dS m-1) and four concentrations of salicylic acid - SA (0, 1, 2, and 3 mM), with three replicates and one plant per plot. Irrigation with water of electrical conductivity above 0.4 dS m-1 negatively affected the leaf relative water content, gas exchange, photosynthetic pigments, and growth of plants. Salicylic acid at a concentration of 1 mM attenuated the effects of salt stress on electrolyte leakage, relative water content, gas exchange, synthesis of photosynthetic pigments, and growth of early dwarf cashew irrigated using water with ECw of up to 3.6 dS m-1, at 210 days after transplanting.

RESUMO O Brasil é um dos maiores produtores de caju do mundo, com destaque para região Nordeste. Entretanto, o crescimento e desenvolvimento são reduzidos pela irrigação com águas salobras. Neste sentido, estratégias têm sido empregadas com intuito de amenizar o estresse salino sobre as plantas. Dentre as estratégias, a aplicação exógena de substância elicitoras, como o ácido salicílico têm se destacado. Diante do exposto, objetivou-se com o presente estudo, avaliar o efeito da aplicação foliar de ácido salicílico como atenuante do estresse salino sobre a morfofisiologia do cajueiro anão precoce. O estudo foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, no delineamento de blocos casualizados, em arranjo fatorial 5 × 4, com cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CEa (0,4; 1,2; 2,0; 2,8 e 3,6 dS m-1) e quatro concentrações de ácido salicílico - AS (0, 1, 2 e 3 mM), com três repetições e uma planta por parcela. A irrigação com água de condutividade elétrica acima de 0.4 dS m-1 afetou negativamente o conteúdo relativo de água nas folhas, as trocas gasosas, os pigmentos fotossintéticos e o crescimento das plantas. O ácido salicílico na concentração de 1 mM atenuou os efeitos do estresse salino sobre o extravasamento de eletrólitos, o conteúdo relativo de água, as trocas gasosas, a síntese de pigmentos fotossintéticos e o crescimento do cajueiro anão precoce irrigado com CEa de até 3,6 dS m-1, aos 210 dias após o transplantio.

RESUMO Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho, avaliar, por meio da análise multivariada de dados, o efeito da aplicação exógena de peróxido de hidrogênio sobre os pigmentos fotossintéticos, as trocas gasosas e o crescimento de mudas de gravioleira sob estresse salino. O estudo foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, na Universidade Federal de Campina Grande - Paraíba. A pesquisa foi conduzida durante o período de maio a outubro de 2018. Os tratamentos foram distribuídos em delineamento de blocos casualizados, em arranjo fatorial 5 × 5, sendo cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CEa (0,6 - testemunha, 1,2, 1,8, 2,4 e 3,0 dS m-1) e cinco concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio - H2O2 (0, 10, 20, 30 e 40 µM), com duas plantas por parcela e quatro repetições. A salinidade da água de irrigação a partir de 1.2 dS m-1 afetou negativamente a biossíntese de pigmentos fotossintéticos, as trocas gasosas e o crescimento da gravioleira. Aplicação de peróxido de hidrogênio na concentração de 20 µM resultou em atenuação do estresse salino sobre a biossíntese de pigmentos fotossintéticos, as trocas gasosas e o crescimento da gravioleira. Concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio acima de 30 µM intensificaram o efeito deletério da salinidade da água de irrigação sobre os pigmentos fotossintéticos, trocas gasosas e o crescimento da gravioleira.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate, through multivariate data analysis, the effect of exogenous application of hydrogen peroxide on the photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange and growth of soursop seedlings under salt stress. The study was conducted in a greenhouse, at Federal University of Campina Grande - Paraíba. The assay was carried out from May to October 2018. The treatments were distributed in a randomized block design, in a 5 × 5 factorial arrangement, corresponding to five levels of irrigation water electrical conductivity - ECw (0.6-control, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4, and 3.0 dS m-1) and five concentrations of hydrogen peroxide - H2O2 (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 μM), with two plants per plot and four replicates. Irrigation water salinity from 1.2 dS m-1 negatively affected the biosynthesis of photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange and growth of soursop. Application of hydrogen peroxide at the concentration of 20 μM resulted in attenuation of salt stress effects on the biosynthesis of photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange and growth of soursop. Hydrogen peroxide concentrations above 30 μM intensified the deleterious effect of irrigation water salinity on the photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange and growth of soursop.

RESUMO O cultivo de tomate cereja no semiárido do Nordeste brasileiro é limitado pela escassez hídrica, por isso é comum o uso de fontes de águas com elevadas concentrações de sais nessa região, que causam efeito deletério nas plantas, podendo ser amenizado por meio de estratégias de manejo, destacando-se a adubação com nitrogênio. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o acúmulo de fitomassas, as trocas gasosas e a produção do tomateiro cereja sob irrigação com águas salinas e adubação nitrogenada. O experimento foi conduzido em ambiente telado do CCTA/UFCG em Pombal – PB durante o período de outubro de 2020 a fevereiro de 2021, utilizando-se o delineamento de blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 5 × 5, sendo cinco níveis de condutividades elétrica da água - CEa (0,3; 1,3; 2,3; 3,3 e 4,3 dS m−1) e cinco doses de nitrogênio - DN (50; 75; 100; 125 e 150% da dose recomendada para a cultura), com três repetições. A salinidade da água de irrigação a partir de 0,3 dS m−1 reduziu a condutância estomática, a transpiração e a taxa de assimilação de CO2 e os componentes de produção do tomate cereja. A adubação dose de nitrogênio a partir de 50% da recomendação diminuiu a condutância estomática, transpiração e a taxa de assimilação de CO2 do tomate cereja. A irrigação com água de condutividade elétrica a partir de 0,3 dS m−1 associado a dose de nitrogênio de 150% da recomendação intensificou o efeito do estresse salino no acúmulo de fitomassas secas do tomate cereja.

ABSTRACT Cherry tomato cultivation in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil is limited by water scarcity, so it is common to use water sources with high concentrations of salts in this region, which have a deleterious effect on plants, which can be alleviated through management strategies, and fertilization with nitrogen stands out. This study aimed to evaluate the growth, gas exchange and production of cherry tomato under irrigation with saline water and nitrogen fertilization. The experiment was carried out in a screened environment at the CCTA/UFCG in Pombal - PB from October 2020 to February 2021, using a randomized block design, in a 5 × 5 factorial scheme, with five levels of electrical conductivities of water - ECw (0.3; 1.3; 2.3; 3.3 and 4.3 dS m−1) and five nitrogen doses - ND (50; 75; 100; 125 and 150% of the recommended dose for the crop), with three replicates. Irrigation water salinity from 0.3 dS m−1 reduced stomatal conductance, transpiration, CO2 assimilation rate and production components of cherry tomato. Nitrogen fertilization from 50% of the recommendation reduced stomatal conductance, transpiration and CO2 assimilation rate of cherry tomato. Irrigation with water of electrical conductivity from 0.3 dS m−1 associated with nitrogen dose of 150% of the recommendation intensified the effect of salt stress on dry biomass accumulation in cherry tomato.

RESUMO O conhecimento do efeito de condicionadores químicos na redução dos efeitos deletérios provocados pela salinidade nas culturas é de grande importância para a expansão do cultivos tais como abobrinha na região semiárida do Nordeste. Nesse contexto, no presente estudo objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da aplicação foliar de peróxido de hidrogênio como atenuador do estresse salino sob as trocas gasosas, a produção e a qualidade pós-colheita de frutos de abobrinha italiana cultivada em sistema hidropônico. O trabalho foi desenvolvido em sistema hidropônico tipo Técnica de Fluxo de Nutrientes em casa de vegetação, em Pombal — PB. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 4 × 4, sendo quatro níveis de condutividade elétrica da solução nutritiva - CEsn (2,1 (controle); 3,6; 5,1 e 6,6 dS m−1), e quatro concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio — H2O2 (0; 20; 40 e 60 μM), com três repetições. A solução nutritiva com condutividade elétrica acima de 2,1 dS m−1 promoveu redução nas trocas gasosas e no número total de frutos de abobrinha italiana. A elevação dos níveis salinos da solução nutritiva aumentou o teor de sólidos solúveis totais dos frutos e a fluorescência inicial de abobrinha italiana. Em condições de salinidade da solução nutritiva acima de 2,1 dS m−1, o peróxido de hidrogênio não conseguiu atenuar os efeitos do estresse salino. A aplicação de 20 μM de H2O2 quando as plantas foram cultivadas em solução nutritiva de 2,1 dS m−1 promoveu maior peso total dos frutos e diâmetro basal dos frutos.

ABSTRACT Knowledge about the effect of chemical conditioners on the reduction of the deleterious effects caused by salinity on crops is of great importance for the expansion of the cultivation of vegetable crops such as zucchini in the semi-arid region of the Northeast. In this context, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the foliar application of hydrogen peroxide as a mitigator of salt stress on the gas exchange, production, and postharvest fruit quality of zucchini cultivated in a hydroponic system. The study was conducted in NFT-type (Nutrient Film Technique) hydroponic system in a greenhouse, in Pombal — PB, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 4 × 4 factorial scheme, corresponding to four levels of electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution - ECns (2.1 (control); 3.6; 5.1 and 6.6 dS m−1), and four concentrations of hydrogen peroxide - H2O2 (0; 20; 40 and 60 μM), with three replicates. Nutrient solution with electrical conductivity above 2.1 dS m−1 caused a reduction in gas exchange and the total number of fruits of zucchini. An increase in nutrient solution salinity levels increased the total soluble solids content of the fruits and the initial fluorescence of zucchini. Under conditions of nutrient solution salinity above 2.1 dS m−1, hydrogen peroxide could not mitigate the effects of salt stress. Application of 20 μM of H2O2 when the plants were grown in a nutrient solution of 2.1 dS m−1 promoted higher total fruit weight and basal diameter of the fruits.

RESUMO A ocorrência de fontes hídricas com elevadas concentrações de sais é um problema frequente na região semiárida do Nordeste do Brasil. Assim, a busca por estratégias de manejo capazes de minimizar o efeito do estresse salino nas culturas é de extrema importância. Neste contexto, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar as trocas gasosas e a produção do maracujazeiro amarelo ‘BRS GA1’ em função das estratégias de irrigação com águas salobras e doses de potássio. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida sob condições de campo em São Domingos, PB, Brasil, utilizando-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 6 × 2, sendo os tratamentos constituídos de seis estratégias de irrigação com águas salinas (SE - irrigação com água de baixa salinidade durante todo ciclo; irrigação com água de alta salinidade na fase vegetativa - VE; floração - FL; frutificação - FR; nas fases sucessivas vegetativa/floração - VE/FL; vegetativa/frutificação - VE/FR) e duas doses de potássio (60 e 100% (345 g de K2O por planta por ano) da recomendação, com quatro repetições e três plantas por parcela. Utilizaram-se dois níveis de salinidade da água (1,3 e 4,0 dS m−1), em diferentes fases fenológicas da cultura. A irrigação com água de 4,0 dS m−1 reduziu o potencial hídrico e osmótico foliar, a condutância estomática, a transpiração e a taxa de assimilação de CO2 do maracujazeiro-azedo, independente da estratégia de irrigação. O estresse salino nas fases vegetativa e de floração de forma contínua comprometeu a produção do maracujazeiro-azedo.

ABSTRACT The occurrence of water sources with high concentrations of salts is a common problem in the semi-arid region of north-eastern Brazil. The search for management strategies that can minimize the effect of salt stress on crops is therefore extremely important. As such, this study aimed to evaluate gas exchange and production in the yellow passion fruit ‘BRS GA1’as a function of irrigation strategies using brackish water and doses of potassium. The research was carried out under field conditions in São Domingos, in the state of Paraíba, Brazil, using a randomized block design in a 6 × 2 factorial scheme, with treatments comprising six irrigation strategies using water (irrigation with low-salinity water throughout the cycle – WS; irrigation with high-salinity water during the vegetative stage – VE; during the flowering stage – FL; the fruiting stage – FR; during successive vegetative/flowering stages - VE/FL; successive vegetative/fruiting stages - VE/FR) and two doses of potassium (60% and 100% of the recommended dose of 345 g K2O per plant per year), with four replications and three plants per plot. Two levels of water salinity (1.3 and 4.0 dS m−1) were used during different phenological stages of the crop. Irrigation with water at 4.0 dS m−1 reduced the leaf water potential, leaf osmotic potential, stomatal conductance, transpiration, and rate of CO2 assimilation of the yellow passion fruit, regardless of the irrigation strategy. RESUMO A alta concentração de sais nas fontes hídricas do semiárido do Nordeste brasileiro se destaca como um dos fatores limitantes para a expansão da fruticultura irrigada. Assim, é de suma importância a busca por estratégia capaz de amenizar o efeito do estresse salino sobre as plantas. Neste contexto, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar as trocas gasosas e a produtividade do maracujazeiro amarelo cultivado sob diferentes estratégias de irrigação com água salobra e adubação potássica em dois ciclos de produção. O experimento foi conduzido em condições de campo, utilizando o delineamento de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 6 × 2, correspondendo a seis estratégias de irrigação com água salobra aplicadas nos diferentes estádios fenológicos da cultura: SE - sem estresse, irrigação com água de baixa salinidade ao longo do ciclo da cultura; irrigação com água de alta salinidade apenas na fase vegetativa - VE; fase de floração - FL; fase de frutificação - FR; e sucessivamente nas fases vegetativa e floração - VE / FL; e fases vegetativa e frutificação - VE/FR, e duas doses de potássio (60 e 100% da recomendação), com quatro repetições e três plantas por parcela. Foi utilizada água de irrigação com alta (4,0 dS m-1) ou baixa (1,3 dS m-1) condutividade elétrica. A dose de potássio de 100% da recomendação correspondeu a 345 g de K2O por planta ao ano. O maracujazeiro amarelo ‘BRS GA1’ é sensível ao estresse salino aplicado sucessivamente nas fases vegetativa e floração e vegetativa e frutificação, apresentando reduções na concentração intercelular de CO2, taxa de assimilação de CO2, eficiência instantânea do uso da água, número de frutos, e produção por planta. A irrigação com água de 4,0 dS m-1 na fase de frutificação é uma estratégia promissora, pois não compromete a produção. A dose de potássio equivalente a 60% foi melhor que 100% da recomendação em termos de trocas gasosas e o rendimento.

ABSTRACT The high concentration of salts in water sources in the semi-arid region of the Brazilian Northeast stands out as one of the limiting factors for the expansion of irrigated cultivation of fruit crops. Thus, the search for a strategy capable of mitigating the effect of saline stress on plants is of paramount importance. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the gas exchange and yield of yellow passion fruit cultivated under brackish water irrigation strategies and potassium fertilization in two production cycles. The experiment was conducted under field conditions, using the randomized block design in a 6 × 2 factorial scheme, corresponding to six strategies of irrigation with brackish water applied in the different phenological stages of the crop: WS - without stress, irrigation with low-salinity water throughout the crop cycle; irrigation with high-salinity water only in the vegetative stage - VE; flowering stage - FL; fruiting stage - FR; and successively in the vegetative and flowering stages - VE/FL; and vegetative and fruiting stages - VE/FR, and two potassium doses (60 and 100% of the recommendation), with four replicates and three plants per plot. In irrigation, water with high (4.0 dS m-1) or low (1.3 dS m-1) electrical conductivity was used. The potassium dose of 100% recommendation corresponded to 345 g of K2O per plant per year. The yellow passion fruit ‘BRS GA1’ was more sensitive to salt stress applied successively in the vegetative and flowering stages and vegetative and fruiting stages, showing reductions in the intercellular CO2 concentration, CO2 assimilation rate, instantaneous water use efficiency, number of fruits, and yield. Irrigation with water of 4.0 dS m-1 in the fruiting stage is a promising strategy, as it does not compromise production. The dose of potassium equivalent to 60% was better than 100% of recommendation in terms of gas exchange and yield.

Resumo A goiaba é uma fruta de grande aceitação pelos brasileiros e é largamente produzida no Nordeste do Brasil, região com a presença de fontes de água que comumente apresentam elevadas concentrações de sais. Assim, a busca por técnicas que permitam o manejo dessas águas é de extrema importância para expansão da agricultura irrigada. Neste contexto, o ácido salicílico é um fitohormônio que pode contribuir na diminuição dos efeitos do estresse salino nas plantas. Diante do exposto, objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar o efeito da aplicação foliar de ácido salicílico em diferentes concentrações na mitigação do estresse salino sobre as trocas gasosas, o crescimento e a qualidade de mudas de goiabeira ‘Paluma’. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, em Campina Grande - PB, utilizando-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados em arranjo fatorial 5 × 5, sendo cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água (0,6; 1,5; 2,4; 3,3 e 4,2 dS m-1) e cinco concentrações de ácido salicílico (0 - Controle; 0,8; 1,6; 2,4 e 3,2 mM), com quatro repetições e duas plantas por parcela. A aplicação foliar de ácido salicílico na concentração de até 1,4 mM reduziu os efeitos deletérios do estresse salino sobre a eficiência instantânea no uso da água das mudas de goiabeira ‘Paluma’ aos 180 dias após o semeio. As concentrações de ácido salicílico aplicadas via foliar não mitigaram os efeitos nocivos da salinidade da água de irrigação sobre o crescimento e a qualidade das mudas de goiabeira ‘Paluma’.

Abstract Guava is a popular Brazilian fruit that is widely produced in Northeastern Brazil, a region with water sources that commonly have high concentrations of salts. Thus, searching for techniques that allow the management of these waters is extremely important for the expansion of irrigated agriculture. In this context, salicylic acid is a phytohormone that can contribute to reducing the effects of salt stress on plants. Given the above, this study evaluated the effect of foliar application of salicylic acid at different concentrations in the mitigation of salt stress on gas exchange, growth, and quality of 'Paluma' guava seedlings. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in Campina Grande - PB, Brazil, using a randomized block design in a 5 × 5 factorial arrangement, corresponding to five levels of electrical conductivity of water (0.6, 1.5, 2.4, 3.3, and 4.2 dS m-1) and five concentrations of salicylic acid (0 - Control; 0.8, 1.6, 2.4, and 3.2 mM), with four replicates and two plants per plot. Foliar application of salicylic acid at a concentration of up to 1.4 mM reduced the deleterious effects of salt stress on the instantaneous water use efficiency of 'Paluma' guava seedlings at 180 days after sowing. The concentrations of salicylic acid applied via foliar did not mitigate the harmful effects of irrigation water salinity on the growth and quality of 'Paluma' guava seedlings.

RESUMO Realizou-se esta pesquisa com o objetivo de avaliar as relações hídricas, os pigmentos fotossintéticos e o crescimento do maracujazeiro cv. BRS Rubi do Cerrado, em função da natureza catiônica da água de irrigação e aplicação exógena de peróxido de hidrogênio. O experimento foi desenvolvido em condições de casa de vegetação em Pombal - PB. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 6 × 4 , sendo seis natureza catiônica da água - NCA (S1 -Testemunha; S2 - Na+; S3 - Ca2+; S4 - Na++Ca2+; S5 - Mg2+ e S6 - Na++Ca2++Mg2+) e quatro concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio – H2O2 (0, 20, 40 e 60 µM), distribuídos em delineamento de blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. As plantas do tratamento testemunha (S1) foram irrigadas com água de condutividade elétrica (CEa) de 0,3 dS m-1, e os demais tratamentos (S2; S3; S4; S5 e S6) foram submetidos à CEa de 3,0 dS m-1, preparada com diferente(s) cátion(s). Aplicação de 60 µM de H2O2 diminuiu a percentagem de extravasamento de eletrólitos nas plantas irrigadas com água de composição cálcica. A salinidade da água constituída de sódio, sódio+cálcio e sódio+cálcio+magnésio e concentrações de 40 e 60 µM de H2O2 resultou em menor potencial hídrico foliar. O acúmulo de fitomassas do maracujazeiro foi mais sensível à variação da condutividade elétrica da água. Independente da natureza catiônica, o uso de água com condutividade elétrica de 3,0 dS m-1 produziu mudas de maracujazeiro com índice de qualidade de Dickson superior a 0,2 considerado aceitável.

ABSTRACT This study was carried out with the objective of evaluating the water relations, photosynthetic pigments and growth of passion fruit cv. BRS Rubi do Cerrado, as a function of the cationic nature of irrigation water and exogenous application of hydrogen peroxide. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions in Pombal – PB, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in a 6 × 4 factorial scheme, corresponding to six cationic nature of water - CNW (S1 - Control; S2 - Na+; S3 - Ca2+; S4 - Na++Ca2+; S5 - Mg2+ and S6 - Na++Ca2++Mg2+) and four concentrations of hydrogen peroxide - H2O2 (0, 20, 40 and 60 μM), distributed in a randomized block design with four replicates. Plants in the control treatment (S1) were irrigated using water with electrical conductivity (ECw) of 0.3 dS m-1, while those of the other treatments (S2; S3; S4; S5 and S6) were subjected to ECw of 3.0 dS m-1, prepared with different cation(s). Application of 60 μM of H2O2 reduced the percentage of intercellular electrolyte leakage in plants irrigated with water of calcic composition. Salinity of water composed of sodium, sodium+calcium and sodium+calcium+magnesium, and H2O2 concentrations of 40 and 60 μM resulted in lower leaf water potential. The biomass accumulation of passion fruit was more sensitive to the variation of the electrical conductivity of the water. Regardless of the cationic nature, the use of water with electrical conductivity of 3.0 dS m-1 produced passion fruit seedlings with a Dickson quality index higher than 0.2, considered acceptable.

ABSTRACT This study was conducted with the objective of evaluating the quantum yield, photosynthetic pigments and biomass accumulation of mini watermelon cv. Sugar Baby, under strategies of irrigation with saline water and potassium fertilization. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, in a 8 × 3 factorial scheme, with three replicates, corresponding to eight strategies of irrigation with saline water applied at different phenological stages of the crop (control - irrigation with low-salinity water throughout the crop cycle, and salt stress in the vegetative, vegetative/flowering, flowering, flowering/fruiting, fruiting, fruiting/ fruit maturation and fruit maturation stage) and three potassium doses (50, 100 and 150% of the recommendation). The dose of 100% corresponded to 150 mg of K2O kg-1 of soil. Two levels of electrical conductivity of water were used: 0.8 and 4.0 dS m-1. Irrigation with water of 4.0 dS m-1 continuously in the vegetative and flowering stages increased the initial fluorescence and decreased the quantum efficiency of photosystem II of mini watermelon fertilized with 100 and 150% of K recommendation. Fertilization with 50% recommendation did not interfere in the fluorescence parameters of the mini watermelon, regardless of the irrigation management strategy. Chlorophyll a synthesis is inhibited by salt stress in the vegetative/flowering, flowering, flowering/fruiting, fruiting/maturation stages, as well as for total chlorophyll, except for the flowering stage. Application of 4.0 dS m-1 water in the flowering, fruiting/maturation and maturation stages promoted greater biomass accumulation in mini watermelon.

RESUMO Desenvolveu-se este trabalho com o objetivo de avaliar o rendimento quântico, os pigmentos fotossintéticos e o acúmulo de fitomassas da mini-melancia cv. Sugar Baby, sob estratégias de irrigação com águas salinas e adubação potássica. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 8 × 3, com três repetições, sendo oito estratégias de irrigação com águas salinas aplicadas em diferentes estádios fenológicos da cultura (controle - irrigação com água de baixa salinidade durante todo o ciclo da cultura, e estresse salino na fase vegetativa, vegetativa/floração, floração, floração/frutificação, frutificação, frutificação/maturação e maturação dos frutos) e três doses de potássio (50, 100 e 150% da recomendação). A dose de 100% correspondeu a 150 mg de K2O kg-1 de solo. Foram utilizados dois níveis de condutividade elétrica da água: 0,8 e 4,0 dS m-1. A irrigação com água de 4,0 dS m-1 de forma contínua nas fases vegetativa e de floração aumentou a fluorescência inicial e diminuiu a eficiência quântica do fotossistema II da mini-melancia adubada com 100 e 150% de recomendação do K. A adubação com 50% de recomendação não interferiu nos parâmetros de fluorescência da mini-melancia, independente da estratégia de manejo de irrigação. A síntese de clorofila a é inibida pelo estresse salino nas fases vegetativa/floração, floração, floração/ frutificação, frutificação/maturação, assim como para a clorofila total, com exceção da fase de floração. A aplicação de água de 4,0 dS m-1 nas fases de floração, frutificação/maturação e maturação promoveu maior acúmulo de fitomassas na mini-melancia.

RESUMO O Nordeste brasileiro sofre com alguns estresses abióticos que são responsáveis pela perda de produção agrícola, como os longos períodos de estiagem e elevada evapotranspiração, associado à qualidade das águas que induz ao uso de águas salinas como alternativa para expansão das áreas irrigadas, com isto a adubação silicatada contribui para redução dos efeitos da salinidade nas condições de semiárido nordestino. Objetivou-se avaliar o potencial osmótico e os índices fisiológicos de mudas de maracujazeiro amarelo sob salinidade da água de irrigação e adubação silicatada. O experimento foi desenvolvido em condições de casa de vegetação na Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, Pombal-PB, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso em esquema fatorial 5 x 5, relativo a cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CEa (0,3; 1,0; 1,7; 2,4 e 3,1 dS m-1) e cinco doses de adubação silicatada (0; 25; 50; 75 e 100 g de silício por planta) em quatro repetições e duas plantas por parcela. A aplicação de 50, 75 e 100 g por planta de silício reduziu o potencial osmótico nos tecidos foliares das plantas de maracujazeiro ‘Gigante Amarelo’. A salinidade da água menor que 1,3 dS m-1 resultou em incremento no conteúdo de clorofila b; aumento nos teores de carotenoides foi verificado nas plantas submetidas as doses de 25 e 100 g de silício. Níveis salinos acima de 1,1 dS m-1 comprometeram o desempenho do fotossistema II das plantas de maracujazeiro quando submetidas as doses de silício.

ABSTRACT The Brazilian Northeast region suffers from some abiotic stresses that are responsible for the loss of agricultural production, such as long drought periods and high evapotranspiration, associated with the quality of the water, which induces the use of saline water as an alternative for the expansion of irrigated areas, and silicate fertilization contributes to reduce the effects of salinity under the Northeastern semi -arid conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the osmotic potential and physiological indices of yellow passion fruit seedlings under irrigation water salinity and silicate fertilization. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions at the Federal University of Campina Grande, Pombal -PB, Brazil, in a randomized block design in a 5 x 5 factorial scheme, relative to five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water - ECw (0.3; 1.0; 1.7; 2.4 and 3.1 dS m-1) and five doses of silicate fertilization (0; 25; 50; 75 and 100 g silicon per plant) in four replicates and two plants per plot. The application of 50, 75 and 100 g silicon per plant reduced the osmotic potential in the leaf tissues of ‘Gigante Amarelo’ passion fruit plants. Water salinity lower than 1.3 dS m-1 resulted in an increase in chlorophyll b content; increase in carotenoid content was observed in plants subjected to silicon doses of 25 and 100 g per plant. Salinity levels above 1.1 dS m-1 compromised the performance of photosystem II of passion fruit plants when subjected to silicon doses.

ABSTRACT Arid and semiarid regions are vulnerable to water deficits and salinity. Citrus plants are sensitive to saline stress and require the use of tolerant scion-rootstock combinations. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate and classify citrus scion-rootstock combinations with respect to their tolerance to salinity during seedling formation in a protected environment. An experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with a 5 x 12 x 2 factorial scheme corresponding to five levels of water salinity (0.8, 1.6, 2.4, 3.2, and 4.0 dS m-1) applied in 12 citrus rootstocks grafted with two scion varieties: ‘Tahiti’ acid lime and ‘Star Ruby’ grapefruit. The scion-rootstock combinations were evaluated for accumulated dry matter and survival index at 330 days after sowing the rootstocks. Salinity exerted different effects on the dry matter formation of scion-rootstock combinations. ‘Star Ruby’ was less sensitive to salinity, particularly when the rootstocks were the hybrids from ‘Sunki of Florida’ mandarin (TSKFL) with ‘Troyer’ citrange (CTTR) - 013 (TSKFL x CTTR - 013), common ‘Sunki’ mandarin (TSKC) with ‘Argentina’ citrange (CTARG) - 019 (TSKC x CTARG - 019), TSKC with ‘Swingle’ citrumelo (CTSW) - 031 (TSKC x CTSW - 031), and the trifoliate hybrid (HTR) - 069, as well as the varieties Volkamer lemon and Santa Cruz Rangpur lime. When grafted with ‘Tahiti’ acid lime, the rootstocks displaying the less sensitive to salinity were TSKFL x CTTR - 013 and TSKC x CTARG - 019.

Resumo O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a influência de combinações de doses de nitrogênio e potássio sobre a fisiologia e a produção de frutos de aceroleira irrigada com água de diferentes salinidades, no segundo ano de cultivo. O experimento foi conduzido no município de Pombal-PB, Brasil, em recipientes plásticos adaptados como lisímetros instalados em campo, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, esquema fatorial 5 x 4 referentes a cinco níveis de condutividades elétricas da água de irrigação (CEa): 0,3; 1,3; 2,3; 3,3 e 4,3 dS m-1 e quatro combinações de adubação nitrogenada e potássica: 70% N + 50% K2O; 100% N + 75% K2O; 130% N + 100% K2O e 160% N + 125% K2O da dose recomendada para aceroleira, com três repetições e uma planta por parcela. Estudou-se a cv. Flor Branca enxertada sobre a cv. Junco, entre 420 e 550 dias após o transplantio. As combinações de nitrogênio e potássio não mitigam os efeitos deletérios da salinidade da água sobre a fisiologia e a produção de frutos da aceroleira. O aumento na CEa intensifica os danos às membranas celulares, reduz o potencial hídrico no ramo, teor de clorofila nas folhas, taxa de assimilação de CO2, diâmetro equatorial e polar e a massa de frutos. A adubação das plantas com 70% de N + 50% de K2O, em relação às outras combinações de adubação, causa menor extravasamento de eletrólitos e proporciona maior taxa de assimilação de CO2, teor de clorofila nas folhas, frutos de maior tamanho e massa.

Abstract This study evaluated the influence of combinations of nitrogen and potassium doses on the physiology and fruit production of West Indian cherry irrigated with waters of different salinities in the second year of cultivation. The experiment was conducted in the municipality of Pombal-PB, Brazil, in plastic containers adapted as lysimeters installed in the field, in a randomized block design, 5 x 4 factorial scheme corresponding to five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (ECw): 0.3, 1.3, 2.3, 3.3 and 4.3 dS m-1, and four combinations of nitrogen and potassium fertilization: 70% N + 50% K2O; 100% N + 75% K2O; 130% N + 100% K2O and 160% N + 125% K2O of the dose recommended for West Indian cherry, with three replicates and one plant per plot. The cv. ‘Flor Branca’ was grafted on the cv. ‘Junco’, between 420 and 550 days after transplanting. Nitrogen and potassium combinations did not mitigate the deleterious effects of water salinity on the physiology and fruit formation of West Indian cherry. An increase in ECw intensifies the intercellular electrolyte leakage and reduces the water potential in the branch, chlorophyll content in the leaves, CO2 assimilation rate, equatorial and polar diameters as well as the mass of fruits. Fertilization of plants with 70% N + 50% of K2O, compared to the other fertilization combinations, causes less intercellular electrolyte leakage and promotes higher CO2 assimilation rates, higher chlorophyll content in leaves, and fruits of larger size and mass.

RESUMO Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar as trocas gasosas, o crescimento e a produção do maracujazeiro amarelo cv. BRS GA1, em função das estratégias de manejo de irrigação com águas salinas e doses de potássio. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida sob condições de campo em São Domingos, PB. Foi utilizado o delineamento de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 6 * 2, cujos tratamentos consistiram de seis estratégias de irrigação com águas salinas (irrigação com água de baixa salinidade durante todo ciclo de cultivo - SE; irrigação com água de alta salinidade na fase vegetativa - VE; de floração - FL; de frutificação - FR; nas fases sucessivas vegetativa/floração VE/FL; vegetativa/frutificação - VE/FR) e duas doses de potássio (100 e 130% de K2O da recomendação), com quatro repetições e quatro plantas por parcela. A dose de 100% correspondeu a 60 g de K2O planta-1 ano-1. Foram avaliados os efeitos do uso de água com alta salinidade (3,2 dS m-1), em alternância com água de baixa concentração de sais (1,3 dS m-1), em fases diferentes do ciclo de cultivo. A irrigação com água salina na fase de frutificação promoveu incremento na concentração intercelular de CO2 e diminuição na assimilação de CO2, destacando-se os efeitos de origem não estomáticos como fatores limitantes da eficiência fotossintética. A maior taxa de assimilação de CO2 nas plantas submetidas à salinidade da água de 1,3 dS m-1 durante todo o ciclo, resultou em aumento no número de frutos e na produção por planta do maracujazeiro cv. BRS GA1.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the gas exchange, growth and production of yellow passion fruit cv. BRS GA1, as a function of irrigation management strategies with saline water and potassium doses. The experiment was conducted under field conditions in São Domingos, PB, Brazil. A randomized block design was used in a 6 * 2 factorial scheme. The treatments consisted of six strategies of irrigation with saline waters (irrigation with low-salinity water throughout the crop cycle - SE; irrigation with high-salinity water in the vegetative stage - VE; flowering stage - FL; fruiting stage - FR; in the successive vegetative/flowering stages - VE/FL; vegetative/fruiting stages - VE/FR) and two doses of potassium (100 and 130% of the K2O recommendation), with four replicates and four plants per plot. The 100% dose corresponded to 60 g of K 2O plant-1 year-1. The effects of using high-salinity water (3.2 dS m-1) alternated with low-salinity water (1.3 dS m-1) were evaluated in different stages of the cultivation cycle. Irrigation with saline water in the fruiting stage promoted an increase in intercellular CO2 concentration and decrease in CO2 assimilation, with effects of non-stomatal origin standing out as limiting factors of photosynthetic efficiency. The highest CO 2 assimilation rate in plants subjected to water salinity of 1.3 dS m-1 throughout the cycle resulted in increments in the number of fruits and in the production per plant of the passion fruit cv. BRS GA1.
