ABSTRACT Lentinula edodes is a primary wood-decomposing fungus that can be cultivated on wood logs or via axenic culture on sawdust-based substrate supplemented with some type of bran. Currently, the axenic cultivation system is preferred because it is favorable for cultivation on an industrial scale. In this work, we evaluated the feasibility of using composted substrates with two formulations and different composting periods for shitake cultivation. It was possible to cultivate this mushroom in the composted substrates; however, the success of cultivation depended on the use of severe pasteurization. The composted substrates were favorable for fungal mycelial growth only when a temperature of 80 °C was used for pasteurization. Moreover, the productivity and biological efficiency of the composted substrate subjected to severe pasteurization were similar to those obtained for non composted substrates. RESUMO Lentinula edodes é um fungo decompositor primário de madeira que pode ser cultivado em toras de madeira ou em cultivo axênico em substrato à base de serragem suplementado com algum tipo de farelo. Atualmente, o sistema de cultivo axênico é preferido porque é favorável ao cultivo em escala industrial. Neste trabalho, avaliamos a viabilidade do uso de substratos compostados com duas formulações e diferentes períodos de compostagem para o cultivo de shiitake. Foi possível cultivar este cogumelo nos substratos compostados; no entanto, o sucesso do cultivo dependeu do uso de pasteurização severa. Os substratos compostados foram favoráveis ao crescimento micelial fúngico apenas quando uma temperatura de 80 °C foi usada para pasteurização. Abstract BRS AG is an irrigated rice cultivar developed by Embrapa, recommended for cultivation in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. It is intended for grain alcohol production or animal feed, with average thousand-grain weight of 52g (double of the conventional cultivars) and average yield of 8193 kg ha-1.

Holocellulose structures from agro-industrial residues rely on main and side chain attacking enzymes with different specificities for complete hydrolysis. Combinations of crude enzymatic extracts from different fungal species, including Aspergillus terreus, Aspergillus oryzae, Aspergillus niger and Trichoderma longibrachiatum, were applied to sugar cane bagasse, banana stem and dirty cotton residue to investigate the hydrolysis of holocellulose structures. A. terreus and A. oryzae were the best producers of FPase and xylanase activities. A combination of A. terreus and A. oryzae extracts in a 50% proportion provided optimal hydrolysis of dirty cotton residue and banana stem. For the hydrolysis of sugar cane bagasse, the best results were obtained with samples only containing A. terreus crude extract.

O resíduo proveniente do beneficiamento do algodão em lixadeiras na indústria têxtil é um material rico em lignocelulose, tem baixa digestibilidade e é pobre em proteínas e minerais, o que dificulta seu uso 'in natura' na alimentação de ruminantes. Neste tarbalho, objetivou-se avaliar a produtividade e eficiência biológica deste resíduo de algodão na produção do cogumelo comestível Pleurotus sajor-caju e avaliar as alterações promovidas no resíduo para alimentação de ruminantes. Foram realizados 5 tratamentos: T1- 80% de serragem de eucalipto + 20% de farelo de trigo (testemunha); T2- 50% de resíduo de algodão + 50% de serragem; T3- 45% de resíduo + 45% serragem + 10% de farelo; T4- 40% de resíduo + 40% serragem + 20% de farelo e T5- 80% de resíduo + 20% de farelo. O T5 apresentou os melhores resultados para produtividade (22,46%) e eficiência biológica (71,48%) do Pleurotus sajor-caju. O fungo alterou a constituição dos substratos nos estágios de produção do cogumelo, principalmente os constituintes da fibra e agregou N ao substrato. Dessa forma, o uso do resíduo de lixadeira de algodão no cultivo de Pleurotus sajor-caju pode se tornar uma alternativa viável para produção de cogumelo e melhorar a qualidade deste resíduo para alimentação animal.

The waste coming from cotton processing in mills in the textile industry is a lignocellulose-rich material, but has low digestibility, and is poor in proteins and minerals, making it inappropriate for ruminant feeding. This study was intended to evaluate the productivity and biologic efficiency of cotton textile mill waste in the production of the edible mushroom Pleurotus sajor-caju, and to evaluate the alterations brought about in the waste for use in ruminant feeding. Five treatments were undertaken in the following manner: T1- 80% eucalyptus sawdust + 20% wheat bran (control); T2- 50% waste + 50% sawdust; T3- 45% waste + 45% sawdust + 10% wheat bran; T4- 40% waste + 40% sawdust + 20% wheat bran and T5- 80% waste + 20% wheat bran. T5 showed the best results for productivity (22.46%) and biologic efficiency (71.48%). Fungus altered the constitution of the substrates in the stages of production of the mushroom. Therefore, the use of cotton textile mill waste in the cultivation of Pleurotus sajor-caju may become a viable alternative for mushroom production, and also improve the quality of this waste for use in animal feeding.

A produtividade do cogumelo Agaricus blazei depende da qualidade do composto e da terra de cobertura. Avaliou-se a produtividade deste cogumelo utilizando-se duas formulações de composto e materiais retirados de três tipos de solo usados como camada de cobertura. As duas formulações de composto consistiram em (i) bagaço de cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum officinarum (L.)) e capim Coastcross (Cynidon dactylon (L.) Pers.), e (ii) bagaço de cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum officinarum (L.)) e palha de milho (Zea mays L.). As duas formulações foram suplementadas com farelo de trigo, calcário, gesso, superfosfato simples e uréia. Como camadas de cobertura foram usadas materiais retirados de um Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico (LVdf), um Latossolo Amarelo distrófico (LAdi) e um Gleissolo melânico (GSm). O material retirado do LVdf foi misturado com carvão vegetal na proporção de 4:1. O composto foi preparado durante seis semanas e pasteurizado com vapor d'água por 48 h ao final do processo de compostagem. O composto bagaço de cana:capim Coastcross foi superior ao composto bagaço de cana: palha de milho, enquanto que o material retirado do LVdf e misturado com carvão vegetal foi melhor como camada de cobertura, em comparação ao LAdi e GSm. A escolha do solo onde será retirado o material a ser utilizado como camada de cobertura pode ser fator determinante no sucesso do cultivo do cogumelo Agaricus blazei.

Commercial productivity of the Agaricus blazei mushroom is closely related to both the quality of the compost and the choice of soil to be used as a casing material. This study aims to evaluate Agaricus blazei's productivity using two compost formulations and three soils. The two compost formulations were (i) crushed sugarcane bagasse (Saccharum officinarum (L.)) and Coastcross hay (Cynidon dactylon (L.) Pers.), and (ii) crushed sugarcane bagasse (Saccharum officinarum (L.)) and corn husk (Zea mays L.); they were amended with wheat bran, lime, gypsum, superphosphate and urea. The casing materials were extracted from three soils classed as Rhodic Hapludox, Xanthic Hapludox, and Humic Haplaquox. The Rhodic Hapludox soil material was mixed with fragments of Eucalyptus charcoal in the proportion of 4:1. The compost was prepared during six weeks and thereafter heat treated during 48 h at the end of the composting period. The sugarcane bagasse:coast-hay compost was superior to the sugarcane bagasse: corn husk compost. The Rhodic Hapludox plus charcoal casing material showed to be a better casing material than either the Xanthic Hapludox and Humic Haplaquox soil materials. The choice of the soils where the casing material is taken is an important factor to the success of the Agaricus blazei mushroom cultivation.

Os cogumelos do gênero Pleurotus normalmente crescem bem em substratos mais pobres em nitrogênio, ao contrário dos cogumelos Agaricus que requerem substratos com relação C/N mais estreita. Por outro lado, os valores nutricionais do cogumelo dependem da composição química do substrato utilizado e das condições de cultivo. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o teor de proteína dos corpos de frutificação do cogumelo Pleurotus sajor-caju cultivado em capim coast-cross, bagaço de cana-de-açúcar, farelo de trigo e diferentes teores de nitrogênio. Apenas os substratos com teores de nitrogênio de 0,65 a 1,30% foram colonizados, enquanto que nos substratos com 1,75 e 2,20% de nitrogênio não houve colonização. Não houve diferença significativa na produção de cogumelos, porém o teor de proteína dos cogumelos produzidos no substrato com 1,30% de N foi significativamente superior em relação aos substratos com menor teor de N.

Mushrooms of Pleurotus genus usually grow well in substrates containing low amounts of nitrogen, whereas Agaricus mushrooms require substrates with a high content of nitrogen. On the other hand, the nutritional values of mushrooms depend on the chemical composition of the substrate in use and the conditions of cultivation. The aim of this work is to measure the protein content of the fructification bodies of Pleurotus sajor-caju cultivated in coast-cross grass, sugar cane bagasse, whole wheat meal and various nitrogen concentrations. Only the substrates with nitrogen content ranging from 0.65 to 1.30% were colonized, while in the substrates with 1.75 and 2.20% of nitrogen, colonization did not occur. There was no significant difference in the production of mushrooms, however the protein content of the mushrooms produced on the substrate with 1.30% of N was considerably higher in relation to those mushrooms grown in substrates with a reduced nitrogen content.
