RESUMO O objetivo desse estudo é avaliar o ajuste das Redes Neurais Artificiais (RNA) para estimativa de altura e avaliação dos efeitos do consórcio em um plantio misto de Eucalyptus globulus (E) e Acacia mearnsii (A). O experimento foi instalado em 2005, em duas fazendas no município de Piratini - RS, onde foram plantadas as espécies Eucalyptus globulus (E) e Acacia mearnsii (A), em monocultura e plantio misto em linha simples (50%E:50%A - LS) e linhas duplas (50%E:50%A - LD). O treinamento e a avaliação das redes neurais foram realizados no software R-project com o pacote neuralnet. Todas as RNAs, desde as mais simples até as mais complexas apresentaram altos valores para Rŷy e baixos para Syx, VIÉS e RQEM, com resultados superiores nas RNA 3, 4 e 6, o que demostrou que as informações DAPmin, DAPmed e DAPmax são importantes atributos do povoamento. Além disso, as RNAs foram capazes de captar os diferentes padrões de crescimento demonstrados pelas espécies as diferentes formas de consórcio, sendo indicadas para a estimativa de altura em monoculturas e plantios mistos de Eucalyptus globulus e Acacia mearnsii, e apenas uma RNA pode ser necessária para representar toda a população.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to evaluate the fit of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for height estimation and evaluation of the effects of consortium in a mixed-species plantation of Eucalyptus globulus (E) and Acacia mearnsii (A). The experiment was installed in 2005, on two farms in the municipality of Piratini - RS, where was planted the species Eucalyptus globulus (E) and Acacia mearnsii (A), in monoculture and mixed in simple lines (50%E:50%A - SL), and double lines (50%E:50%A - DL). The training and evaluation of the networks were made in R-project with the package neuralnet. All ANNs, from the simplest to the most complex, showed high values for Rŷy and low for Syx, BIAS and RMSE, with superior results in ANN 3, 4, and 6, which demonstrates that the information of DBHmin, DBHmean, and DBHmax were important stand attributes. Furthermore, the ANNs were able to capture the different growth patterns shown by the species in the different forms of consortiums, therefore is indicated for the height estimation in monocultures and mixed plantations of Eucalyptus globulus and Acacia mearnsii, and only one ANN would be necessary to represent the entire population.

RESUMO Os objetivos desse trabalho foram propor equações aditivas de biomassa dos componentes (fuste e copa) com a biomassa total para a espécie acácia negra (Acacia mearnsii De Wild.) e demonstrar a inconsistência de equações de biomassa ajustadas independentemente. Dois procedimentos foram utilizados para ajustar equações não lineares de biomassa: i) independente e ii) sistemas de equações. O segundo procedimento, definido pela aplicação do modelo de regressão aparentemente não relacionada, apresenta melhores propriedades biológicas e estatísticas para estimar equações alométricas de biomassa dos componentes e biomassa total, quando comparado com a estimação independente. Uma propriedade efetiva desse procedimento é a aditividade, isto é, as estimativas de biomassa dos componentes são compatíveis com as de biomassa total. As equações ajustadas independentes não consideram a dependência entre os componentes de biomassa, assim, além das estimativas não serem aditivas, propriedade indesejável, resultarão em estimativas com maior variância.

ABSTRACT The objectives of this work were to propose additive equations for biomass components (stem and crown) and total biomass for black wattle (Acacia mearnsii De Wild.) and show the inconsistency of independently adjusted biomass equations. Two procedures were used to fit nonlinear equations of biomass: i) independent and ii) systems of equations. The second procedure, defined by the application of the seemingly unrelated regression model, has better biological and statistical properties to estimate allometric equations of biomass components and total biomass when compared with the independent estimation. An effective property of this procedure is the additivity, i.e., the estimates of component biomass are compatible with those of total biomass. Independent fitted adjusted equations do not consider the dependence between the biomass components, thus, besides the estimates being non-additive, which is an undesirable property, they will result in estimates with larger variance.

RESUMOO objetivo é estudar a dinâmica da radiação fotossintética alcançando a superfície do solo em povoamentos de Acacia mearnsii De Wild e sua influência no crescimento em altura em povoamentos. Este fato dá origem à formulação da seguinte hipótese para este estudo: "A redução da incidência de luz no interior do suporte de acácia negra vai fazer com que o ponto de inflexão no seu crescimento quando esta atinge a altura de 4 a 5 m de altura, isto é, quando o povoamento se encontra entre 2 e 3 anos de idade". O estudo foi realizado em povoamentos no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, onde os diâmetros a altura do peito, altura total e radiação fotossinteticamente ativa disponível ao nível do solo foram medidos. A frequência tendeu a ser mais intensa com o aumento da idade dos povoamentos. Ficou evidente que ocorreu redução da incidência de luz no interior da floresta causada pelo fechamento do dossel. Consequentemente, o dossel fechado propiciou a concorrência das plantas. Isso afetou as condições para o crescimento em diâmetro e altura dessa espécie, razão pela qual se torna possível conceber a ocorrência de um ponto de inflexão no crescimento dessas duas variáveis, confirmando a hipótese formulada.

ABSTRACTThe objective is to study the dynamics of photosynthetic radiation reaching the soil surface in stands of Acacia mearnsii De Wild and its influence on height growth in stands. This fact gives rise to the formulation of the following hypothesis for this study: "The reduction of the incidence of light inside the stand of black wattle will cause the inflection point in its height growth when this reaches 4 to 5 m in height, i.e. when the stand is between 2 and 3 years of age". The study was conducted in stands in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, where diameters at breast height, total height and photosynthetically active radiation available at ground level were measured. The frequency tended to be more intense when the age of the stands increases. It was evident that a reduction of light incidence inside the forest occurred, caused by canopy closure. Consequently, closed canopy propitiated the competition of plants. This has affected the conditions for growth in diameter and height of this species, reason why it becomes possible to conceive the occurrence of an inflection point in the growth of these two variables, confirming the formulated hypothesis.

Biomass yield is a function of the conversion efficiency of photosynthetically active radiation intercepted in photoassimilates and varies depending on the conditions in which a plant is grown. Thus, this study sought to quantify the conversion efficiency of solar radiation intercepted by photosynthetically active biomass (εb) in black wattle stands (Acacia mearnsii De Wild.). A study was therefore conducted in 1-7 year-old stands of the species in two sites (to span one plantation cycle), in which intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (PARi), leaf area index, light extinction coefficient and biomass yield were determined. A system of equations is proposed, therefore, as photosynthetic radiation is intercepted and assimilates are converted, the system of equations estimates biomass yield, and at the same time predicts the biomass partition within the tree. The biomass yield of black wattle was linearly related to PARi and the εb of the total biomass of black wattle is 0.0021 kg MJ-1.

El rendimiento en biomasa es una función de la eficiencia de conversión de radiación fotosintéticamente activa interceptada en fotoasimilados y varía, dependiendo de las condiciones en que se cultiva una planta. Este estudio cuantificó la eficiencia de conversión de la radiación solar interceptada por la biomasa fotosintéticamente activa (εb) en rodales acacia negra (Acacia mearnsii). Se realizó un estudio en rodales de 1-7 años de edad en dos sitios (para abarcar el ciclo completo de cultivo de la especie), en que se determinaron la radiación fotosintéticamente activa interceptada (PARI), el índice de área foliar, el coeficiente de extinción de la luz y el rendimiento de biomasa. Se propuso un sistema de ecuaciones que expresó como la radiación fotosintética es interceptada y los asimilados se convierten. El sistema de ecuaciones estima el rendimiento de biomasa y al mismo tiempo predice la partición de la biomasa dentro del árbol. El rendimiento en biomasa de acacia negra se relacionó linealmente con RFAi y la εb de la biomasa total de acacia negra fue 0,0021 kg MJ"¹.

A fonte de energia de uma árvore provém da radiação solar e, dessa forma, a copa pode ser considerada o órgão da árvore que influencia na interceptação da energia fotossintética e, consequentemente, no crescimento da árvore. A influência do local de plantio, da idade do povoamento e dos elementos meteorológicos na relação entre o diâmetro de copa (DC) e o diâmetro a 1,30 metro do solo (DAP) da espécie Acacia mearsnii De Wild. foi alvo do presente estudo. Para tanto, um estudo da relação do DC com o DAP foi conduzido em povoamentos de acácia-negra, variando nas idades de 1 a 7 anos e em dois locais de cultivo. O DC é maior na medida em que aumenta o DAP, de forma a atingir uma relação logarítmica. O incremento em DC em função do DAP tendeu a diminuir em diferentes intensidades, sendo para as árvores com menores DAP e vice e versa. A relação de DC e DAP, ao longo da idade do povoamento e entre os locais de cultivos estudados, não foi a mesma, produzindo efeitos dependentes para esses fatores. As equações genéricas geradas para descrever tal relação podem ser utilizadas para a estimativa do DC, sendo os coeficientes correlacionados com a precipitação e a temperatura média máxima do ar.

The energy source of a tree comes from solar radiation, and the crown is considered the tree organ that influences the interception of photosynthetic energy and, consequently, its growth. The influence of growth location, age of population, and meteorological elements on the relationship between crown diameter (CD) and diameter at breast height (DBH) of Acacia mearnsii De Wild. (black wattle) was studied. To this end, the study of the relationship between CD and DBH was conducted in stands of 1-7-year-old black wattle trees in two cultivation sites. CD increases proportionally to the increase in DBH, following a logarithmic relationship. The increase in CD as a function of DBH tended to decrease at different intensities, with the largest relative CD increase for the smallest DBH increase, and vice versa. The relationship between CD and DBH for the different ages and locations of the stands varied, generating dependent effects for these factors. The general equations generated to describe this relationship can be used for CD estimate, and their coefficients are correlated with rainfall and average maximum air temperature.

RESUMO O presente estudo analisa a composição e a estrutura da regeneração de espécies nativas arbóreas em um povoamento de acácia-negra, estabelecido há 16 anos em área ripária, e verifica a possibilidade da acácia-negra constituir-se numa invasora desse ambiente. O estrato arbóreo (circunferência a 1,3 m de altura (CAP) ≥15 cm) foi avaliado em 12 parcelas de 100 m2, alocadas em quatro blocos perpendiculares a maior pendente da área. O estrato de regeneração natural (0,3 m de altura a CAP <15 cm) foi amostrado em duas subparcelas de 9 m2, demarcadas em vértices opostos de cada parcela. O estrato arbóreo apresentou 26 espécies de 14 famílias e o estrato de regeneração natural 49 espécies de 23 famílias. O índice de diversidade de Shannon para espécie, considerando as parcelas como um todo, foi de 2,60 e 3,06 para os estratos arbóreo e de regeneração natural respectivamente. Entre as espécies nativas, Casearia sylvestris, Myrsine lorentziana e Zanthoxylum petiolare apresentaram o maior valor de importância no estrato arbóreo e Faramea marginata, Myrsine lorentziana e Myrcia glabra a maior densidade no estrato de regeneração natural. As características ecológicas das espécies encontradas nos diversos estratos de altura indicaram que o processo de sucessão florestal está em evolução. A acácia-negra não se regenerou na área e as árvores plantadas estão em senescência, sendo encontradas somente cem plantas/ha, que representa apenas 4,5% da população original. Dessa forma, a acácia-negra não se constitui numa possível invasora desse ambiente.

ABSTRACT This study analyzes the structure and floristic composition of the regeneration of native forest species under black-wattle plantation, established 16 years ago in a riparian area, and it verifies the possibility of the black-wattle be considered an invasive species of this environment. The tree stratum (circumference at breast height (CBH) ≥15 cm) was evaluated in 12 plots of 100 m2, established in four blocks. The natural regeneration stratum (0.3 m height to <15 cm CBH) was evaluated in two subplots of 9 m2, established in opposite vertexes of each plot. The tree stratum was composed by 26 species of 14 families and the natural regeneration stratum by 49 species of 23 families. The Shannon diversity index for species, considering all plots, was 2.60 and 3.06 to the tree and natural regeneration strata, respectively. The native species, Casearia sylvestris, Myrsine lorentziana and Zanthoxylum petiolare presented the larger importance value in the tree stratum and Faramea marginata, Myrsine lorentziana and Myrcia glabra the biggest density in the natural regeneration stratum. The ecological characteristics of the species found in several height strata indicated that the forest succession process is in evolution. The black-wattle did not regenerate in this area and the planted trees of this species are in the senescence phase. Only 100 tree/ha of black-wattle were found, which represents 4.5% of the original population. Thus, black-wattle is not an invasive species for this environment.

RESUMO Os plantios homogêneos de acácia-negra nem sempre são feitos em solos adequados às exigências da espécie, seja pelo valor da terra ou proximidade da indústria. Diferentes sistemas de preparo podem melhorar as condições do solo, evitar problemas de erosão e diminuir custos de implantação. Em áreas de propriedade da TANAGRO S.A e da SETA S.A., nos municípios de Piratini e Butiá, RS, em dois tipos de solos distintos - Neossolo Litólico e Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo, foram testados sistemas de preparo do solo com diferentes níveis de movimentação para plantio de acácia-negra: plantio de mudas em covas e plantio após subsolagens com duas, três e cinco hastes e uso de gradagens. Foram avaliados o crescimento em DAP e altura, anualmente, e produção de biomassa aérea no corte raso. Os solos foram caracterizados química e fisicamente em seus horizontes superficiais. Nas plantas, após sete anos, foram coletadas amostras de discos em seis posições no tronco para avaliação das densidades básicas. Preparo do solo com subsolador de cinco hastes apresentou maiores perdas de solo, que foram mensuráveis apenas até 18 meses após o plantio. Essas perdas de solo são extremamente importantes na sustentabilidade da produção do Neossolo Litólico, composto em 80% de calhaus e cascalho. O preparo reduzido do solo, com a abertura de covas manual e mecanicamente para plantio da acácia negra, não diminuiu o crescimento das plantas em ambos os solos estudados. No entanto, o desenvolvimento inicial das plantas de acácia negra, plantadas em sistema de preparo reduzido, foi mais lento (altura e DAP), defasagem que permaneceu até os 24 meses após o plantio.

ABSTRATC Black wattle plantations are not always settled in soils adequate for the species sometimes due to land value or due to industry distance. Different soil tillage systems can improve soil conditions to plant growth, avoid erosion problems and reduce costs. In areas belonging to TANAGRO S.A. e SETA S.A., in two different counties, Piratini and Butiá, RS, and two distinct soil types - litholic and red yellow podzolic - soil tillage systems with different levels of soil disturbance were tested in growing black wattle: planting in holes with no-tillage and planting after subsoiling with two, three and five shranks and harrowings. Plant height and DBH were taken annually, and after seven years samples of the trunk were obtained at six different positions for specific gravity analyses. Soils were characterized chemically and physically on their surface layers. Soil losses were greater where soil was prepared with a five-shrank-subsoiler, and they were measurable until 18 months after planting. These soil losses are very important for sustainable production of the litholic soil, constituted in around 80% of stones. Reduced tillage system, with planting holes opened manually and mechanically, did not decrease black wattle growth on both soils studied. However, plant growth increment at the initial stage was smaller on reduced tillage system, and this difference to the other tillage systems tested remained until 24 months after planting.

RESUMO A acácia-negra se adapta a inúmeras condições ambientais por ser uma espécie pioneira de crescimento rápido. Este trabalho foi realizado em povoamentos comerciais puros de acácia-negra de propriedade da TANAGRO S.A., no município de Piratini, RS, em cinco classes de solos, com plantas de mesma procedência, constituindo cada qual um tratamento. Em cada solo, foram avaliados o crescimento em DAP, altura e produção de biomassa aérea. Os solos foram caracterizados química, física e morfologicamente em seus horizontes superficiais. Nas plantas, foram determinado o estado nutricional dos diferentes compartimentos, o teor de tanino na casca e o teor de lignina e extrativos totais no tronco. O Neossolo Litólico eutrófico produziu o maior volume de troncos comerciais, enquanto o Neossolo Litólico álico foi o menos produtivo, mostrando a grande importância da fertilidade do solo na produtividade da acácia negra, sobretudo, o teor de P e as saturações por bases e por alumínio trocável. Se os resíduos não forem queimados, a quantidade de macronutrientes devolvida ao solo (por galhos, flor, folhas e vagens) é maior que a quantidade de macronutrientes exportada, com a retirada apenas do tronco comercial e casca, nos solos menos produtivos, confirmando que se trata de espécie recuperadora de solo. Nos solos com maior volume de troncos comerciais produzidos, a quantidade de cálcio e magnésio exportada foi maior do que a devolvida ao solo pelos resíduos da colheita. A concentração de tanino na casca da acácia-negra foi maior em condições adversas de solo, mas a maior produção de casca em solos melhores compensa esse fato.

ABSTRACT Black wattles can grow on several environmental conditions being a fast growing and short life pioneer specie. This work was established on Acacia mearnsii De Wild commercial plantations, belonging to TANAGRO Co., in Piratini, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, growing on different soil types, with plants from the same origin. In each of the five-soil type, a treatment to evaluate black wattle growth in DBH and height, and above ground biomass was considered. Soils had their surface horizons characterized morphological, chemical and physically, and nutritional status were measured in every plant compartment, tannin yield in plant bark, amount of lignin and total extractives were determined in commercial stem wood. Neossolo Litólico eutrófico (Entisol) showed the greatest commercial stem volumes and Neossolo Litólico álico (Entisol) was the least productive, especially due to soil fertility differences, mainly P level, base saturation and aluminum saturation. The amount of macronutrients returned, keeping harvesting residues (branches and crown) on soil surface, was greater than the amount exported in commercial stem and bark, attesting its efficiency on soil reclaiming, if the residues are not burned. In most productive soils in volume of commercial stems, the amount of calcium and magnesium exported was greater than the amount returned to soil. The amount of tannin in black wattle bark was greater in plants growing in adverse soil conditions (shallow and stony soils).

O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar a arquitetura do sistema radicular de árvores de acácia-negra (Acacia mearnsii) aos três anos após o plantio, em razão da combinação de oito tipos de recipientes e seis misturas de substratos usados na produção das mudas, levando-se em consideração atributos químicos e físicos do solo. As árvores foram plantadas no município de Cristal (RS), em solo Podzólico Vermelho Escuro, que apresentou alta densidade, baixo pH e excesso de alumínio. O tratamento que teve maior desenvolvimento radicular foi o fertil-pot, com substrato constituído por solo adubado, que diferiu estatisticamente dos tratamentos tubete redondo, com solo adubado + casca de acácia esgotada + vermiculita; paper pot, com solo adubado e laminado acondicionado em caixas de madeira, com solo adubado. O desenvolvimento e arquitetura das raízes no campo foram afetado pelo recipiente, mas não pelo substrato utilizado na fase de viveiro.

The objective of this study was to characterize the architecture of the root system of black wattle trees (Acacia mearnsii), three years after planting, in relation to eight types of containers and six substrata used in the nursery, considering chemical and physical conditions of the soil. The experiment was carried out in Cristal (RS), in a Podzolic Dark Red soil. The soil presented high density, low pH and excess of aluminum. The treatment that induced larger root development was fertil-pot with fertilized soil, which differed significantly from the treatments round plug, with fertilized soil + acacia exhausted bark + vermiculite; paper pot, with fertilized soil and laminated in wood box, with fertilized soil. The development and the architecture of the roots in the field was affected by the container but not by the substrata used in the nursery.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a distribuição do sistema radicular de árvores de acácia-negra (Acacia mearnsii) com 3 anos de idade, provenientes de mudas formadas em diferentes recipientes e instaladas em um Argissolo no Rio Grande do Sul. Os recipientes utilizados foram: laminado, tubete redondo e bandeja de isopor. As avaliações da distribuição das raízes foram feitas pelo método da parede do perfil até 1 m de profundidade, na linha e na entrelinha de plantio. Foram feitas, também, análises físicas do solo: densidade, porosidade total e distribuição de poros. O recipiente usado na formação da muda influenciou o crescimento do sistema radicular da planta no campo. O laminado de madeira apresentou-se superior ao tubete quanto ao comprimento de raízes nas linhas de plantio. As raízes cresceram melhor nas linhas de plantio, onde as condições de densidade e porosidade do solo se encontravam mais adequadas.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the root system distribution of three-year-old black wattle (Acacia mearnsii) trees. The plants were originated from seedlings grown in different containers and planted in an Argisol in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The containers used for seedling production were: wood laminated pots, round plastic tubettes and styrofoam trays. The evaluations were carried out using the trench profile method up to 1 m depth on tree rows and inter-rows. The following soil analyses were also carried out: bulk density, total porosity and pore distribution. The type of container used influenced the development of the root system of trees on the field. Wood laminated pots were better than the round tubettes for root length in the tree rows. The roots developed better on the tree rows where soil density and porosity conditions were more adequate.
