Young soccer players undertake anthropometric measurements for directing the effectiveness of training programs. However, the use of the eight-electrode electrical bioimpedance method is increasingly being used for the body composition evaluation. The purpose of this study was to compare and correlate body composition, using anthropometric predictive equations, with the use of electrical bioimpedance. Thirty Brazilian high-performance men, players of the U-20 category, participated in the study, while their position in the field was recorded. Anthropometrics were assessed using the predictive equations of Faulkner, Yuhasz, Carter, and Slaughter and electrical bioimpedance. There were no significant differences between methods for anthropometric evaluation, while traditional body composition analysis and bioimpedance showed moderate correlations with respect to the anthropometric protocols, Faulkner (r = 0.63, p<0.01), Yuhasz (r = 0.64, p<0.01), Carter (r = 0.64, p<0.01) and Slaughter (r = 0.53, p<0.01). According to the present investigation, bioimpedance with eight electrodes can be a reliable tool for the assessment of body composition in young soccer players.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the effects of combinations of resistance training (RT) and static stretching (SS) on heart rate (HR), systolic pressure (SBP), diastolic pressure (DBP), rate pressure product (RPP), oxygen saturation (SpO2), rating of perceived effort (RPE), and heart rate variability (HRV) in men. METHODS: Twelve normotensive healthy men participated in four protocols: a) SS+RT, b) RT+SS, c) RT, and d) SS. Variables were measured before, immediately after, and 15, 30, and 45 min after the sessions. RESULTS: The combination of SS and RT increased (p<0.001) HR when compared to the effects of the noncombined protocols (from 2.38 to 11.02%), and this result indicated metabolic compensation. Regarding DBP, there were differences (p<0.001) between the RT and SS groups (53.93±8.59 vs. 67.00±7.01 mmHg). SS has been shown to be able to reduce (p<0.001) SpO2 (4.67%) due to the occlusion caused by a reduction in the caliber of the blood vessels during SS compared to during rest. The increase in RPP (6.88% between RT and SS+RT) along with the HR results indicated higher metabolic stress than that reflected by the RPE (combined protocols increased RPE from 21.63 to 43.25%). The HRV analysis confirmed these results, showing increases (p<0.01) in the LF index between the combined and noncombined protocols. Compared to the effect of RT, the combination of SS and RT promoted a vagal suppression root mean square of the successive differences (RMSSD) index (from 9.51 to 21.52%) between the RT and SS+RT groups (p<0.01) and between the RT and RT+SS groups (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Static stretching increases cardiac overload and RPE, reducing oxygen supply, especially when performed in combination with RT.

OBJETIVO: Verificar a influência de diferentes sequências de exercícios no desempenho do número de repetições máximas em mulheres idosas. MÉTODOS: Doze mulheres idosas (65,7 ± 5,6 anos, 66,9 ± 9,5 kg, 1,56 ± 0,67 m; 27,4 ± 3,6 kg/m2) foram submetidas a diferentes sequências de exercícios no Treinamento Resistido. Na primeira visita, as voluntárias foram submetidas à anamnese, avaliação antropométrica e teste de 10 RM. Na segunda visita, foi feito um re-teste de 10RM. Na terceira e quarta visita, as voluntárias realizaram as duas sequências: SEQ A - supino horizontal, puxador alto fechado, rosca bíceps e rosca tríceps e, SEQ B - a ordem foi inversa. O desempenho foi medido pelo número de repetições em cada exercício. A fim de verificar as diferenças nos dados obtidos no desempenho em diferentes sequências e séries, foram realizadas medidas repetidas pela ANOVA two-way seguido do teste post-hoc de Tuckey. RESULTADOS: Os resultados demonstraram que o número de repetições de cada exercício variou significativamente entre as sequências nos exercícios de supino horizontal, rosca bíceps e rosca tríceps. CONCLUSÕES: A ordem dos exercícios realizada em uma sessão de treinamento resistido pode afetar o desempenho no número de repetições em mulheres idosas.

OBJECTIVE: Verify the influence of different exercise orders on the performance of the number of maximal repetitions in older women. METHODS: Twelve older women (65.7 ± 5.6 years, 66.9 ± 9.5 kg, 1.56 ± 0.67 m, 27.4 ± 3.6 kg/m2) underwent four nonconsecutive visits and two different orders of Resistance Training. At the first visit, the volunteers were submitted to anamnesis, anthropometric evaluation and a 10RM test. On the second visit, a re-test of 10RM was performed. On the third and fourth visits, the volunteers performed two exercise sequences: sequence A: bench press, latissimus pulldown close grip, biceps curl, triceps extension; for sequence B the order was inverted. Performance was measured by the number of repetitions in each exercise. To determine differences in performance for sequence A vs. sequence B, repeated measures were performed by two-way ANOVA followed by the Tuckey post-hoc test. RESULTS: The number of repetitions of each exercise varied significantly for the bench press, biceps curl and triceps extension between the exercise sequences. CONCLUSIONS: The order of the exercises performed in a resistance training session can affect the performance in the number of repetitions in older women.

Abstract Introduction: Morbid obesity is a condition of multifactorial origin with a high prevalence worldwide, and has a direct relationship with other illnesses. Objective: To analyse the cardiovascular responses of morbid obese women using a máximum stress test for stratifying risk and the prescribing of exercise. Method: The study included 13 patients with Grade III obesity. All were women between 20 and 40 years of age. Their arms were subjected to an ergospirometry test on the cycle ergometry in order to check and analyse heart rate, blood pressure, and the double product. Results: The patients had a mean age of 34.7 ± 5.1 years, and a mean body mass index of46.5 ± 3.8 kg/m2. A maximum heart rate of 168.2 ± 14.6 bpm was achieved, with no hypertensive response to the stress, and blood pressure of 171.1 ± 22.2 mm Hg (systolic) x 87.5 ± 4.2 mm Hg (diastolic). The maximum double product found was 28,662.2 ±3,644.1 mm Hg.bpm. Conclusion: In the results of this study is observed reduction of heart rate, blood pressure, and the double cardiac product, compatible with the expected effort for the test.

Resumen Introducción: la obesidad mórbida es una enfermedad de etiología multifactorial, de gran prevalencia en el mundo, que guarda relación directa con otras comorbilidades. Objetivo: analizar las respuestas cardiovasculares de pacientes mujeres con obesidad mórbida, a través de un test de esfuerzo máximo para la estratificación del riesgo y la prescripción de ejercicio. Método: se incluyeron trece pacientes con obesidad grado III, de sexo femenino, con edad entre 20 a 40 años, que fueron sometidas a un test ergoespirométrico en el cicloergómetro de miembros superiores para la verificación y el análisis de la frecuencia cardiaca, la presión arterial y el doble producto. Resultados: las pacientes con media de edad de 34,7 ± 5,1 años tenían índice de masa corporal de 46,5 ± 3,8 kg/m2. Alcanzaron una frecuencia cardíaca máxima de 168,2 ± 14,6 lpm, sin respuesta hipertensiva al esfuerzo, y presión arterial de 171,1 ± 22,2 mm Hg (sistólica) x 87,5 ± 4,2 mm Hg (diastólica). El doble producto máximo encontrado fue de 28.662,2 ±3.644,1 mm Hg.lpm. Conclusión: de acuerdo con los resultados de este estudio se observó una reducción de la frecuencia cardiaca, la presión arterial y el doble producto cardiaco, compatible con el esfuerzo esperado para el test.

ABSTRACT Aim the aim was to investigate the influence of a maximal isometric muscle action of the elbow extensors on the contralateral dynamic task of the elbow flexors. Methods Seventeen recreationally trained men (23.3 ± 4.9 yrs, BMI: 24.8 ± 2.2 Kg/m²) underwent two randomized different testing sessions separated by one week. In the control session (CON) all subjects performed a maximum number of repetitions test (RMs) at 75%1RM using the right elbow flexors. The experimental session (EXP) was similar to the CON; however, all subjects were instructed to perform RMs at 75%1RM by using the right elbow flexors and maintaining the maximal voluntary contraction of the left elbow extensors during the test. RMs, rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and training volume (TV) were measured and compared between sessions. Results The EXP showed a significant 10.4% increase on the RMs (13.8 vs. 12.5, p < 0.001, d = 0.44) and 12.1% increase in TV (238.0 vs. 212.4 kg, p < 0.001, d = 0.43) than CON. No differences were observed for RPE between sessions. Conclusion The maximum voluntary contraction of the left elbow extensors increased the RMs of the contralateral elbow flexors, reflecting a higher TV, and no differences in the RPE. Our results suggest that the investigated method may be a viable and practical alternative to increase the acute strength performance of elbow flexors when using submaximal loads.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi comparar a influência do Teste de Sentar e Alcançar (TSA) modificado com e sem aquecimento sobre o score final obtido por diferentes faixas etárias de homens e mulheres fisicamente ativos. A amostra foi composta por 412 sujeitos, sendo 321 do gênero feminino (45 ± 14,09 anos; 66 ± 12,23Kg; 1,55 ± 0,05m) e 91 do gênero masculino (42 ± 15,75 anos; 74,6 ± 12,41Kg; 1,65 ± 0,07m). Todos os indivíduos realizaram o TSA modificado e convencional, com e sem aquecimento. O TSA modificado apresentou resultados significativos quando comparado à forma convencional, em ambos os gêneros avaliados (p = 0,0001). Em relação à condição para realizar o teste (com e sem aquecimento), o protocolo com aquecimento foi superior ao protocolo sem aquecimento, em ambos os gêneros, para o TSA modificado e convencional (p = 0,0001). Como conclusão, para avaliar a flexibilidade de membros inferiores, seria interessante utilizar um TSA adaptado, a fim de minimizar uma possível influência no score obtido no final do teste.

The aim of this study was to compare the influence of the modified Sit-and-Reach test (MSR) with or without warm-up on the final score obtained by groups of men and women of different ages, physically actives. The sample consisted of 412 subjects, 321 females (45 ± 14.09 years, 66 ± 12.23 kg, 1.55 ± 0.05 m) and 91 males (42 ± 15.75 years; 74, 6 ± 12.41 kg, 1.65 ± 0.07 m). All subjects underwent the MSR and the conventional Sit-and-Reach test (CSR), with or without warm up. The MSR showed significant results when compared to the CSR protocol, in both genders (p = 0.0001). Regarding the condition for testing (with or without warm up), the protocol with warm up showed better results than the protocol without warm up, for both genders, for the MSR and CSR (p = 0.0001). In conclusion, to evaluate the lower body flexibility, it would be interesting to use a MSR to minimize a possible influence in the score obtained at the test.

INTRODUÇÃO: Estudos comparando modelos de periodização em sequências de treinamento resistido (TR) realizadas do menor para o maior grupo muscular sobre as alterações musculares em indivíduos destreinados em TR são escassos. OBJETIVO: Comparar o efeito da periodização ondulatória (PO) e da periodização linear (PL) sobre a força máxima e hipertrofia muscular em uma sequência de execução dos exercícios dos menores para os maiores grupamentos musculares. MÉTODOS: Vinte e nove homens não experientes em (TR) foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em três grupos: PO (n =10), PL (n = 13) e grupo controle (GC, n = 9). Os indivíduos realizaram o teste de uma repetição máxima (1RM) nos exercícios rosca bíceps (RB), rosca tríceps (RT), puxada aberta (PA) e supino reto (SR), contração isométrica voluntária máxima (CIVM) e espessura muscular (EM) para flexores de cotovelo (FC) e extensores de cotovelo (EC) antes e após o período de 12 semanas de treinamento. O grupo PO variou o volume e a intensidade do treinamento diariamente, e o grupo PL a cada quatro semanas. O GC não realizou TR. Foi realizada uma ANOVA de dois caminhos com medidas repetidas, e cálculo do tamanho do efeito (TE), nas cargas obtidas para analisar o efeito do tratamento sobre as variações pré- e pós-período de TR. RESULTADOS: Os principais achados do estudo foram: 1) o grupo PO apresentou maior TE para 1RM dos exercícios RT e RB e para EM dos FC e EC quando comparado ao grupo PL; 2) não houve diferença no TE para os exercícios SR e PA que finalizavam a sessão. CONCLUSÃO: Ambos os modelos de periodização adotados foram eficientes para promover aumentos de força e hipertrofia muscular. Contudo, segundo o cálculo do TE, a PO promoveu maior incremento da força máxima nos exercícios que iniciaram a sessão e hipertrofia muscular.

INTRODUCTION: Studies comparing periodization models in sequences that begin with small muscle group and progressed toward large muscle group in untrained subjects in resistance training are scarce. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of ondulatory periodization and linear periodization models on maximum strength and muscular hypertrophy in a muscle group increasing exercise sequence. METHODS: Twenty-nine men with no experience in RT were randomly assigned into three groups: ondulatory periodization (OP, n = 10), linear periodization (LP, n = 13), and control group (CG, n = 9). The individuals performed 1RM tests in four exercises: biceps curl (BC), triceps extension (TE), lat pull down (LPD) and bench press (BP) and evaluations of maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC), muscle thickness of elbow flexors (EF) and elbow extensors (EE) before and after the 12 weeks of training were carried out. The OP group varied in volume and intensity on a daily basis, while LP group varied every four weeks. The CG did not perform ST. A two-way ANOVA with repeated measures and the effect size (ES) were used to analyze muscle thickness, 1RM load improvement in each of the four exercises and the MVIC between groups. RESULTS: The major findings of this study were: 1) OP showed major ES for 1RM of BC and TE and for muscle thickness of EF and EE when compared with LP. 3) The ES data did not show significant differences for BP and LPD which finished the training session. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that both periodization models were efficient at improving strength gains and muscular growth. However, ES data show that OP promotes major gains in strength for exercises that are positioned at the beginning of the session and hypertrophy.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a força muscular e os níveis séricos basais de testosterona e ureia em atletas de futebol. Vinte e quatro jogadores de futebol, em período pré-competitivo, tiveram amostra de sangue coletada para análise da concentração de testosterona e ureia. Em seguida, realizaram os testes de 1RM para o exercício supino horizontal e agachamento. Após a coleta de dados, foram divididos de forma aleatória em dois grupos que foram submetidos a programas de periodização ondulatória (G1) e não periodizado (G2) por 12 semanas. A ANOVA de medidas repetidas mostrou que houve aumento na concentração de testosterona sérica no G1 (∆ = 3,70ng/dl; p = 0,0001) e no G2 (∆ =1,81ng/dl; p =0,035) e redução nos níveis de ureia apenas no G1 (∆ = - 3,08mg%; p = 0,0001). O G1 mostrou maiores níveis de testosterona (∆ = 2,13ng/dl; p = 0,009) e menores de ureia (∆ = -1,36mg%; p = 0,026) no pós-teste quando comparado ao G2. Os testes de 1RM não apresentaram diferenças significativas. A periodização ondulatória da força no treinamento para jogadores de futebol demonstrou ser mais eficaz que o treinamento não periodizado para promover o aumento dos níveis séricos de testosterona e redução dos níveis de ureia.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the muscle strength and basal serum testosterone and urea levels in soccer athletes. Twenty-four soccer players in pre-competitive period had a blood sample collected to have testosterone and urea concentrations analyzed. Subsequently, 1RM tests were applied to the bench press and squat exercises. After data collection, the athletes were randomly divided in two groups submitted to: non-linear periodization program (G1) and non-periodized program (G2), both for 12 weeks. ANOVA for repeated measures showed increase in serum testosterone concentration in G1 (∆ = 3.70 ng/dl; p = 0.0001) and in G2 (∆ = 1.81 ng/dl; p = 0.035) and reduction in urea levels only in G1 (∆ = -3.08mg%; p = 0.0001). G1 presented higher levels of testosterone (∆ = 2.13 ng/dl; p = 0.009) and lower levels of urea (∆ = -1.36mg%; p = 0.026) in the post-test when compared to G2. 1RM tests did not show significant differences. The non-linear training in soccer players was more effective than the non-periodized training in promoting increase in serum testosterone levels and reduction in urea levels.

Os objetivos do presente estudo foram verificar diferenças de carga entre o membro operado (MO) e o membro não operado (MNO) e comparar a soma das ações unilaterais com as bilaterais em um teste de 10 repetições máximas (10RM), nos movimentos de extensão e flexão de joelhos, em indivíduos pós-reconstrução do ligamento cruzado anterior (LCA). Participaram do estudo vinte homens (37,8±5,7 anos; 179,2±4,9 cm; 87,1±7,5 kg) submetidos à reconstrução do LCA com autoenxerto em um segmento, testados em dois dias distintos na cadeira extensora e flexora. Utilizou-se o teste-t student dependente com p≤0,05 como nível de significância. Os valores encontrados para a o MO são menores em relação ao MNO (p<0,05), assim como, o somatório de carga unilateral é maior que a carga obtida bilateralmente, (p<0,05), em ambos os movimentos. Em conclusão, foi identificado o déficit bilateral para os dois movimentos analisados, assim como, diferença na força máxima entre o MO e MNO.

The aims of this study were verify the differences between the operated limb (OL) and non-operated limb (NOL) and compare the sum of unilateral actions with bilateral results following the test of 10 repetitions maximum (10RM) for the movements of extension and flexion of the knee in patients after reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Twenty men (37.8±5.7 years; 179.2±4.9 cm; 87.1±7.5 kg) who underwent surgery for ACL reconstruction with autograph in a segment were observed in two different days, in the movements of knee extension and flexion. A student t-test for dependent samples was applied. It was adopted level of statistical significance p < 0.05. The values found for the OL were smaller in relation to the NOL (p < 0.05), as well as the sum of unilateral load was greater than the bilaterally load (p < 0.05) in both movements. In conclusion, there were significant differences for the two movements analyzed and, for comparison between OL and NOL.

O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar o efeito das diferentes fases do ciclo menstrual (CM) no desempenho da força muscular em exercícios resistidos. Participaram do estudo nove mulheres saudáveis, fisicamente ativas, com idade de 27 ± 7 anos, massa corporal 58,2 ± 5kg, estatura 161,1 ± 4,7cm e IMC 20,4 ± 2kg/m². Todas apresentavam CM's regulares (28-31 dias), faziam uso de contraceptivos orais e eram experientes em exercícios resistidos a pelo menos oito meses. Para avaliação da força muscular foi utilizado o teste de 10RM na seguinte ordem: leg press 45º, supino horizontal, cadeira extensora e rosca bíceps. Os testes foram realizados nas três fases do CM: folicular (entre o terceiro e o quinto dia do fluxo menstrual), ovulatória (entre o nono e o 10º dia) e lútea (entre o 17º e o 21º dia). Para a análise estatística foi utilizada a ANOVA de medidas repetidas, os dados analisados no software SPSS 15.0 e o nível de significância mantido em 5% (p < 0,05). Não foram verificadas diferenças estatisticamente significativas nas cargas mobilizadas entre os diferentes períodos do CM em nenhum dos quatro exercícios avaliados. No exercício leg press foi verificado um incremento de 5% na força muscular na fase lútea. Nas demais fases e exercícios essas diferenças não foram observadas. Podese concluir que as fases do CM não influenciam o desempenho da força muscular nos exercícios resistidos, sejam eles uni ou multiarticulares, para grandes ou pequenos grupamentos musculares ou em diferentes segmentos corporais

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the different phases of the menstrual cycle (MC) on muscular strength performance in resistance exercises. Nine healthy and physically active women, aged 27±7 yrs, body mass 58.2±5 kg, height 161.1±4.7 cm and BMI 20.4±2 kg/m2 participated in the study. All of them had regular MCs (28-31 days), used oral contraceptives and had been experienced in resistance exercises for at least eight months. Muscle strength was evaluated with a 10RM test in the following order: leg press 45º, bench press, leg extension and biceps curl. The tests were performed in the three phases of the MC: follicular (between the 3rd and 5th day of menses), ovulatory (between 9th and 10th days) and luteal (between 17th and 21th days). ANOVA for repeated measures was applied for statistical analysis, data were analyzed in the SPSS 15.0 and level of significance was set at 5% (p<0.05). No significant statistical differences were observed in the mobilized weight between the MC periods in those four exercises. Regarding the leg press exercise, a 5% increment in muscle strength was observed on the luteal phase. In the remaining exercises and phases these differences were not observed. In conclusion, the phases of the MC did not affect performance of muscular strength in resistance exercise, both single or multiple joint, for large or small muscle groups or in different body segments

Os exercícios resistidos (ER) têm-se mostrado como um dos recursos efetivos para a promoção da saúde e melhoria da capacidade funcional de paraplégicos. Entretanto, o número limitado de estudos sobre a influência dos ER para tal população, acaba por limitar as possibilidades de utilização desta prática. O principal objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma revisão sobre os benefícios dos ER na melhoria da capacidade funcional e saúde dos paraplégicos. Para tanto, foi realizada uma pesquisa na base de dados do Lilacs, Medline, SportDiscus, SciELO e Scholar Google com o intuito de selecionar as evidências científicas. Os estudos revisados demonstraram que programas de ER são capazes de promover benefícios psicológicos, sociais e físicos, dentre eles a melhoria da aderência ao exercício, melhoria dos níveis de força, resistência e potência, aumento do metabolismo e da melhoria do perfil lipídico aterogênico, e a redução de dores nos ombros em paraplégicos. Os ER são benéficos e até mesmo necessários para manter a capacidade funcional e saúde nesta população.

Resistance training (RT) has been one effective device for health promotion and improvement of functional capacity of paraplegics. However, the limited number of studies on the influence of RT for this population somehow restricts the possibilities for application of this practice. The aim of this study was to carry on a review on the benefits of RT in the functional capacity and health improvement of paraplegics. Thus, LILACS, MEDLINE, SportDiscus, Scielo, and Scholar Google databases were researched with the purpose to select the scientific evidence. The studies revised here had demonstrated that RT programs can promote physical, psychological and social benefits, among which, exercise engagement, strength, endurance and power improvement, atherogenic profile and metabolism increase, as well as reduction of shoulder pain in paraplegics. RT is beneficial and even necessary to maintain the functional capacity and health in this population.

O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar os efeitos da suplementação aguda (5 g.kg-1 durante uma semana) e crônica (1 g.kg-1 durante quatro e oito semanas) de creatina (Cr) sobre as concentrações plasmáticas de Creatina Quinase (CQ), Lactato Desidrogenase (LDH) e Aspartato Aminotransferase (AST), de ratos sedentários e exercitados (natação a 80% da carga máxima tolerada). Setenta e dois ratos Wistar machos (250 ± 10 g) foram utilizados e divididos igualmente em quatro grupos: ratos sedentários não suplementados (CON; n = 18); ratos exercitados não suplementados (NAT; n = 18); ratos sedentários e suplementados (CRE; n = 18); ratos exercitados e suplementados (CRE + NAT; n = 18). Ao final da primeira, quarta e oitava semanas, seis animais de cada grupo foram sacrificados. Os resultados demonstraram: 1) ao final da primeira semana elevação plasmática de CQ, LDH e AST nos grupos NAT-1 e CRE+NAT-1 em relação aos grupos CON-1 e CRE-1; 2) ao final da quarta semana valores superiores para CQ e LDH somente no grupo NAT-4; e 3) ao final da oitava semana, somente os valores de AST do grupo CRE-8 diferiram dos demais. Estes achados sugerem que a suplementação de Cr: 1) não afeta o dano muscular em ratos submetidos a uma semana de treinamento físico de alta intensidade em meio aquático; 2) pode ser capaz de reduzir o dano muscular após quatro semanas de treinamento; e 3) após oito semanas de suplementação de Cr, o dano muscular parece ser atenuado pelo próprio exercício, anulando os efeito da Cr.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the short-term (5 g.kg-1 to 1 week) and long-term (1 g.kg-1 to 4-8 weeks) creatine supplementation (Cr) on the Creatine Kinase (CK), Lactate Dehydrogenaze (LDH) and Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) plasmatic concentrations of sedentary and exercised (swimming to 80% of the tolerated maximum load) rats. Seventy two Wistar males rats (250 ± 10 g) were equally divided in four groups: sedentary rats without supplementation (CON; n = 18); exercised rats without supplementation (NAT; n = 18); sedentary rats with supplementation (CRE; n = 18); exercised rats with supplementation (CRE+NAT; n = 18). At the end of the first, fourth and eighth weeks six animals of each group were sacrificed. The results demonstrated: 1) improvement of CK, LDH and AST in NAT-1 and CRE+NAT-1 groups vs. CON-1 and CRE-1 groups after the first experimental week; 2) higher values of CK and LDH only NAT-4 group after four experimental weeks; and 3) only AST from CRE-8 group differed from other groups at the end of the eighth experimental week. These findings suggest that the Cr supplementation: 1) does not affect the muscle damage on swimming exercised rats after one week of high intensity training; 2) could be able to reduce the muscle damage after 4 weeks of training; and 3) after eight weeks of Cr supplementation, the muscle damage seems to be attenuated by the exercise, nullifying the effects of Cr.

O índice de tensão específica (ITE) estima a relação entre o torque máximo (TQ) e o volume muscular (VM) para uma tarefa específica, e inclui a espessura muscular (EM) como um parâmetro medido diretamente pela ultrassonografia. O objetivo do presente estudo foi comparar o VM, TQ e ITE dos flexores do cotovelo entre indivíduos treinados e não treinados em força. Participaram do estudo 40 homens, sendo 11 treinados em força há pelo menos dois anos [grupo treinado (GT): 23,5 ± 3,1 anos; 182,1 ± 4,9 cm; 88,1 ± 8,4 kg], e 29 não treinados [grupo não treinado (GNT): 29,8 ± 1,6 anos; 172,4 ± 6,6 cm; 76,4 ± 8,1 kg]. O ITE dos flexores de cotovelo de ambos os grupos foi calculado como sendo a razão do torque pelo VM. A EM através da ultra-sonografia foi utilizada para estimativa do VM. O torque de flexão do cotovelo (TQ) foi obtido em teste de contração voluntária isométrica máxima (CVIM). Teste não paramétrico de Mann-Whitney foi utilizado para verificar possíveis diferenças no TQ, ITE e VM entre grupos. O VM e o TQ apresentaram valores significativamente maiores no GT (526,07 ± 86,13 cm³; 112,04 ± 24,18 Nm), quando comparados aos valores apresentados pelo GNT (385,40 ± 80,89 cm³; 88,46 ± 13,77 Nm), porém, não foram encontradas diferenças estatísticas para o ITE entre os grupos GT (0,213 ± 0,03 Nm.cm-3) e GNT (0,233 ± 0,02 Nm.cm-3). O ITE dos flexores de cotovelo não apresentou valores reduzidos para o GT, sugerindo a manutenção da linearidade da relação força-volume. O TQ e a estimativa de VM mostraram-se confiáveis na distinção dos grupos, e a medida de ITE pode contribuir para análise mais aplicada, no campo da prática clínica e da prescrição de atividades físicas, como um indicador de níveis não adequados de sobrecarga e de risco de lesão.

The specific tension index (STI) estimates the ratio of maximum torque (TQ) to muscle volume (MV) for a specific task and includes muscle thickness as a parameter, which can be directly evaluated by ultrasound. The objective of the present study was to compare TQ, MV and STI of the elbow flexors between strength-trained and untrained subjects. Forty men, including 11 subjects strength trained for at least two years [trained group (TG): 23.5 ± 3.1 years; 182.1 ± 4.9 cm; 88.1 ± 8.4 kg] and 29 untrained subjects [untrained group (UG): 29.8 ± 1.6 years; 172.4 ± 6.6 cm; 76.4 ± 8.1 kg], participated in the study. The STI of the elbow flexors, expressed as the TQ/MV ratio, was calculated for both groups. Muscle thickness measured by ultrasound was used to estimate MV. TQ of the elbow flexors was estimated using maximum isometric voluntary contractions. The Mann-Whitney test was used to determine possible differences in TQ, STI and MV between groups. MV and TQ were significantly higher in TG (526.07 ± 86.13 cm³; 112.04 ± 24.18 Nm) than UG (385.40 ± 80.89 cm³; 88.46 ± 13.77 Nm). There was no significant difference in the STI between TG (0.213 ± 0.03 Nm.cm3-) and UG (0.233 ± 0.02 Nm.cm3-). Although stronger, trained subjects presented elbow flexor STI values similar to those of the untrained group, a finding suggesting the maintenance of the linearity of the force-volume ratio. TQ and MV estimates were found to be reliable parameters for the distinction between groups. The STI may contribute to a more applied analysis in clinical practice and in the prescription of physical activity as an indicator of inadequate levels of overload and of the risk of injury.

São escassos na literatura estudos que investigaram a influência de diferentes intervalos de recuperação em um treinamento nos exercícios resistidos (ER) aplicado em longo prazo. O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar a influência de dois diferentes intervalos de recuperação entre séries para grupos musculares distintos, durante oito semanas de treinamento. Preencheram os requisitos de inclusão no estudo 12 homens, sendo seis em cada grupo (26,4 ± 5,1 anos; 181,3 ± 6,2cm; 85,9 ± 7,6kg). Os testes de carga em 10RM foram coletados em dois dias distintos e a aplicação no teste 10RM obedeceu à seguinte ordem: supino horizontal (SH), leg-press 45º (LP) e rosca bíceps (RB). O primeiro grupo treinou com 1 min de intervalo, enquanto o segundo com 3 min de intervalo entre séries. O treinamento compreendeu três sessões semanais, realizadas em dias alternados (24 sessões). Realizaram-se três séries de cada exercício com os respectivos intervalos e, somente após as três séries no mesmo exercício, executava-se a seqüência no exercício posterior. A ordem do treinamento foi SH, LP, RB, hack machine, puxada pela frente no pulley alto, abdominal flexão parcial e tríceps no pulley. Para acompanhar o efeito dos diferentes intervalos nas três situações de medida, foi realizada uma ANOVA de uma entrada com medidas repetidas, seguida de verificação post-hoc de Tukey (p<0,05). Em nenhuma das avaliações realizadas, observou-se diferença significativa entre as cargas para 10RM, quando comparados os intervalos de recuperação entre si. Concluiu-se que, independentemente do intervalo de recuperação adotado, não houve diferenças significativas nas cargas obtidas para 10RM nos ER conduzido por oito semanas. Para esclarecer a influência dos intervalos no desempenho da força, sugere-se a realização de estudos futuros com maiores tempos de acompanhamento e amostras com níveis de aptidão diferenciada.

It is scanty in the literature studies who investigated chronic effects in different rest intervals in resistance exercise (RE). The aim of the present study was to verify the influence of two different rest intervals between sets to distinct muscular groups, over eight weeks on RE training. Participated 12 men in this study, being six in each group (26.4±5.1 years; 181.3±6.2 cm; 85.9±7.6 kg). The 10RM test was made in two days (test and retest) and was in the following order: bench press (BP), leg-press 45º (LP) and biceps curl (BC). The first group trained with 1 min rest interval, and the other one with 3 min rest interval between sets. The total training consisted in three sessions per week, realized in alterned days (24 sessions). The subjects did three sets of each exercise in the respective intervals, and only after three sets in the same exercise, they go on in the next exercise. The exercise order was: BP, LP, BC, hack machine, lat pull down, abdominals and triceps pull down. A one-way ANOVA was used and a Tukey post hoc test was performed where indicated (p<0.05) to verify the interval rest effects on the three measures. No significant differences between the 10RM loads were observed when compared the different rest intervals. We conclude that independent of rest interval, no significant differences were observed in 10RM loads in RE during eight weeks. To clarify the rest intervals influence on strength training, we suggest new future studies with samples in different levels of physical fitness and training in longer durations.

FUNDAMENTO: O exercício de força pode proporcionar significativas respostas cardiovasculares durante sua execução, sendo interessante traçar estratégias para reduzí-las sem comprometer a produção de força. OBJETIVO: Comparar as respostas cardiovasculares agudas de pressão arterial sistólica (PAS), diastólica (PAD), freqüência cardíaca (FC) e duplo-produto (DP) durante a extensão unilateral de joelho (quatro séries de oito repetições máximas) realizada de forma contínua ou fracionada. Ambos os protocolos envolveram 2 minutos (min) de intervalo entre as séries, e no protocolo fracionado foi adicionada uma pausa de 2 segundos (s) entre a 4ª e a 5ª repetições. MÉTODOS: Oito homens saudáveis e treinados em força muscular (26± 6 anos) participaram da coleta de dados, aleatoriamente divididos em dois dias não-consecutivos. As respostas cardiovasculares foram medidas por fotopletismografia (Finapres) em repouso, ao término de cada série e 2 min após a execução de cada protocolo. RESULTADOS: A série fracionada acusou valores significativamente mais elevados que o protocolo de série contínua para: PAS (mmHg) na 2ª (173,1± 5,4 vs 152,0± 4,0; p=0,001), 3ª (188,9± 8,6 vs 162,4± 6,0; p=0,000) e 4ª série (193,1± 8,1 vs 161,6± 5,9; p=0,000); PAD (mmHg) na 3ª (103,8± 4,1 vs 86,1± 3,3; p=0,000) e 4ª série (104,1± 2,7 vs 83,4± 3,3; p=0,000); DP (mmHg.bpm) na 2ª (17.907,5± 1.350,7 vs 14.541,9± 1.848,0; p=0,03), 3ª (19.687,3± 1.444,3 vs 15.612,1± 1.180,3; p=0,008) e 4ª série (21.271,0± 1.794,2 vs 15.992,0± 1.093,4; p=0,001). CONCLUSÃO: O protocolo fracionado proporcionou maior elevação das respostas pressóricas que o protocolo contínuo. No entanto, pelas características do delineamento adotado, são necessários outros estudos para confrontar esses achados.

BACKGROUND: The strength training can promote significant cardiovascular responses during its performance and it is interesting to devise strategies to reduce them, without compromising the strength production. OBJECTIVE: To compare the acute cardiovascular responses of systolic arterial pressure (SAP), diastolic arterial pressure (DAP), heart rate (HR) and double product (DP) during the unilateral knee extension (four series of 8 maximum repetitions) performed continuously or discontinuously. Both protocols involved a 2-minute interval between the series and the discontinuous protocol had an extra interval of 2 seconds between the 4th and the 5th repetitions. METHODS: Eight healthy men trained in muscular strength (aged 26± 6 years) participated in the data collection and were randomly divided in two non-consecutive days. The cardiovascular responses were measured by photoplethysmography (Finapres, Ohmeda, Louisville, CO, USA) at rest, at the end of each series and 2 minutes after the performance of each protocol. RESULTS: The discontinuous series showed significantly higher values when compared to the protocol of the continuous series for: SAP (mmHg) at the 2nd (173.1± 5.4 vs 152.0± 4.0; p=0.001), 3rd (188.9± 8.6 vs 162.4± 6.0; p=0.000) and 4th series (193.1± 8.1 vs 161.6± 5.9; p=0.000); DAP (mmHg) at the 3rd (103.8± 4.1 vs 86.1± 3.3; p=0.000) and 4th series (104.1± 2.7 vs 83.4± 3.3; p=0.000); DP (mmHg.bpm) at the 2nd (17,907.5± 1,350.7 vs 14,541.9± 1,848.0; p=0.03), 3rd (19,687.3± 1,444.3 vs 15,612.1± 1,180.3; p=0.008) and 4th series (21,271.0± 1,794.2 vs 15,992.0± 1,093.4; p=0.001). CONCLUSION: The discontinuous protocol promoted higher increase in pressure responses when compared to the continuous one. However, due to the characteristics of the study design, further studies are necessary to support these findings.
