RESUMO: O Pragmatismo, como proposto por Charles S. Peirce, deve ser considerado um método para a produção teórica de pensamento que visa à construção de conceitos, a qual assume a forma de uma máxima lógica orientadora da conduta científica. Se um conceito é uma relação sígnica e a sua compreensão, um processo sígnico, encontramos na semiótica peirceana uma estratégia para discriminar as etapas da compreensão conceitual e avaliar os significados de termos e conceitos abstratos. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é explicar os princípios lógicos que governam os tipos de Signos que mais diretamente estão relacionados à construção de conceitos, a saber: o Símbolo-Remático, o Símbolo-Dicente e o Argumento. Tais signos correspondem à antiga divisão Termo, Proposição e Argumento, modificada de modo a ser aplicável aos signos em geral.

ABSTRACT: Pragmatism, as proposed by Charles S. Peirce, should be considered a method for the theoretical production of thought that aims the construction of concepts, which takes the form of a logical maxim guiding scientific conduct. If a concept is a sign relationship and its understanding a sign process, we find in Peircean semiotics a strategy to discriminate the stages of conceptual understanding and to evaluate the meanings of abstract terms and concepts. Therefore, the aim of this work is to explain the logical principles that govern the types of Signs that more directly are related to the construction of concepts, namely: the Rhematic Symbol, the Dicent Symbol and the Argument. Such signs correspond to the old division between Term, Proposition and Argument, modified in order to be applicable to the signs in general.

O pragmatismo, como método formal, nos fornece uma importante arena para discussões a respeito do modo pelo qual conceitos podem ser construídos, independentemente de qualquer posição antropocêntrica ou linguística. O presente trabalho tem por finalidade efetuar uma discussão sobre a máxima pragmática e a tese sobre a indeterminação do significado (meaning) que ela traz consigo. Ou seja, busca-se entender o trânsito que há entre o indefinido e o definido, entre o indeterminado e o determinado, bem como algumas fronteiras intermediárias encontradas nos processos de determinação relativa do conceito.

Pragmatism, as a formal method, has provided a fabulous arena for discussions about the way concepts may be constructed, irrespective of any anthropomorphic or linguistic position. We will see that the pragmatic maxim possesses an interesting thesis regarding the indetermination of the meaning. Such idea helps to understand the transit between the indefinite and the defined, indeterminate and determined, as well as some found intermediate borders in the processes of relative determination.

A lógica como semiótica implica, do ponto de vista de Peirce, uma estrutura triádica onde a bipolaridade constituída pelo par sujeito-objeto é superada. Tanto o nominalismo quanto o individualismo são ultrapassados. O signo é mais amplo do que o símbolo e supõe a potencialidade e a atualidade. Duas classes de objetos e duas séries de interpretantes, cada uma destas últimas admitindo três espécies, dão lugar a uma lógica da conduta científica que faz apelo a uma comunidade futura cuja crença corresponde à Verdade, e a uma dimensão cosmológica do pensamento que fundamenta a derradeira objetividade do conhecimento e da volição.

Logic as semiotics implies, in the Peirce's point of view, a triadic structure of thought and sign, where the bipolarity constituted by the pair subject - object is overcome. Nominalism is surpassed and individualism too. Sign is broader than symbol and supposes potentiality and actuallity. Two classes of objects and two series of interprétants, each one of the least by its turn admitting a triple subdivision, give place to a logic of scientific conduct. This makes appeal to a future community whose belief corresponds to the Truth, and to a cosmologie dimension of thought that supplies with a ground to the last objectivity of knowledge and volition.

O diagrama do signo, quando aplicado no entendimento da ciência, dá lugar a uma correlação original entre abdução, dedução e indução. A união da abdução e da dedução consiste numa Forma geral de possibilidade lógica. Enquanto que a indução estabelece, no decorrer da experiência, a razão de freqüência no universo dos fatos das conseqüências previstas na representação geral. Como uma construção formal, a ciência enquanto semiótica sustenta-se, mesmo tendo por objeto um universo do puro acaso. Todavia, no interior do conjunto total do sistema filosófico de Peirce, a ciência só adquire significado se corresponder à realidade da Natureza. A garantia desta correspondência estatisticamente relevante seria o fato de o instinto humano pertencer ao mesmo estágio de evolução do universo todo.

The diagram of sign when applied to the understanding of science gives place to an original correation correlation of abduction or retroduction, deduction and induction. The conjunction of abduction and deduction consists of a general Form of logical possibility. Induction in its turn, establishes, in the long run, the ratio of frequency of the accomplishment of expected consequences of general representations in the universe of facts. As a formal construction, science as semiotics sustains itself even if it has as its object an universe of pure chance. Nevertheless, within Peirce s philosophical system, science retains its meaning only if it corresponds to the reality of Nature. The warrant of this statistically relevant correspondance would be the fact that human instinct belonged to the same stage of evolution as the whole universe.

O caráter semiótico de todo pensamento exige que tal fenômeno seja intrinsecamente dialógico, pois uma mediação interfere na própria produção do pensamento. Todo pensamento é igualmente social, pois o signo é produto da tradição e determina um programa de conduta para o futuro que tem por sujeito último a totalidade das mentes no fim da história.

The semiotic character of all thought requires this phenomenon to be intrinsically dialogic, because a mediation interferes in the own thought production. All thought is equally social because sign is the product of tradition and determines a program of conduct to the future, which has by ultimate subject the totality of minds in the end of history.

O uso da metáfora da sob-existência do plano de um velho fórum na mente de seu arquiteto, a fim de entender o modo de ser do estado inicial do cosmos poderia dar origem a uma postulação de um plano na mente divina ou na natureza. A perfeição divina e o processo evolucionário do cosmos e da Razão, tais como são expostos na filosofia de PEIRCE, parecem opor-se à realidade de um tal plano. O presente artigo é um ensaio de discussão desta questão.

The use of the metaphor of the under existence of the plan of an old forum in the mind of its architect in order to understand the mode of being of the initial estate of the cosmos could originate a postulation of a plan in the divine mind or in the Nature. The divine perfection and the evolutionary process of the cosmos and Reason, as they are exposed in PEIRCE's philosophy, seem to be opposed to the reality of such a plan. The present paper discusses this question.

O Pragmaticismo de Charles Sanders Peirce, como teoria geral da concepção, e uma teoria do signo e uma teoria do pensamento. Limitando-se à consideração do "teor racional" dos símbolos, o pragmaticismo procura estabelecer o tipo de causação atribuível ao pensamento: uma causação eficiente centralizada na percepção e no experimento e uma causação final que determina um hábito racional de conduta diante da classe geral de fenômenos experimentais representada no conceito.

The Pragmaticism of Charles Sanders Peirce, as a general theory of conception, is a theory of sign and a theory of thought. Limiting itself on the consideration of the "rational purport" of symbols, the Pragmaticism seeks to establish the kind of causation atribuitive to thought: an efficient causation centralized in perception and experiment and a final causation determining a rational habit of conduct before the general class of experimental phenomena represented by the concept.

Entre as diversas semióticas e semiologias atualmente existentes, devem-se distinguir dois projetos gerais: o de origem saussureana e o de origem peirceana. O primeiro recolhe da ciência lingüística seu modo de proceder e as características gerais do signo. O segundo pertence à tradição crítica filosófica. Para a inteligência capaz de aprender com a experiência, a dimensão temporal e histórica é essencial. O signo peirceano implica as relações de um tempo irreversível. À produção presente do signo cabe a função poética, a qual é essencial à vida de toda inteligência. A hipótese cientifica, as revoluções sociais em seu momento originário e a produção artística produzem novos signos, recortam novos objetos e abrem feixes de possibilidades para a conduta futura.

Among the several semiotics and semiologies existing nowdays, there are two that must be distinguished: that of saussurean origin and that of peircean origin. The first finds its mode of proceeding and the general features of sign in the science of linguistics. The other belongs to the critical philosophic tradition. For the intelligence that can learn with the experience, the temporal and historic dimension is essential.The peircean sign supposes the relations of an irreversible time. To the present production of sign should be related the poetic function, which is essential to life of all intelligence. The scientific hypothesis, the social revolutions in their originary moment and the artistic production make new signs, draw new objects and open sets of possibilities for the conduct in the future.

A produção científica e filosófica de Charles Sanders PEIRCE (1839-1914), exigindo como critério para o trabalho intelectual e para a conduta da vida do pensador o absoluto rigor na construção dos conceitos e a estrita verificação experimental, teve por conseqüência desvincular o trabalho científico e filosófico de qualquer função apologética. A afirmação de que todo conhecimento do mundo da experiência e mesmo daquele elaborado pela matemática é intrinsecamente provável e falível se opôs a todo e qualquer dogmatismo e mesmo ao "a priori" de tradição Kantiana. O interesse pela teoria evolucionista e a coerência inabalável da filosofia e das atitudes de PEIRCE, como professor e pesquisador, encontraram profunda resistência no meio universitário e editorial de seu tempo. Num momento de grave crise na Universidade norte-americana, decorrente das transformações econômicas e políticas ocorridas com a guerra da Secessão (1861-1865), o posicionamento de PEIRCE contribuiu muito provavelmente para sua demissão como professor das Universidades de Harvard e de John Hopkins; para dificultar a publicação de seus escritos e para seu total isolamento nos últimos anos de vida.

For Charles Sanders Peirce (1838-1914), the criterion for the intellectual work and for the conduct of the life of a thinker was absolute rigor in the construction of concepts and strict experimental verification - this outlook caused a complete separation of scientific and philosophical work from any apologetic function. The view that all knowledge of the world of experience and even the knowledge elaborated by Mathematics is intrinsically probable and fallible opposed every and any dogmatism and even the "a priori" of the Kantian tradition. The interest for the evolutionary theory and the unshakable coherence of Pierce's philosophy and attitudes as a professor and a researcher arose strong resistance in the university and editorial world of his time. At a time of serious crises in the North-American university which came as a consequence of the political and economic developments after the Civil War (1861-1965), Peirce's firm position certainly brought about his dismissal from Harvard and John Hopkins Universities, as it also made it difficult for him to publish and it also contributed to his total isolation in the last years of his life.

A partir de objeções às proposições de Mikhail BAKHTIN (ou V.N. VOLOCHINOV) sobre a produção da linguagem e do discurso literário no interior das relações sociais de produção, sugere-se a aplicação da semiótica peirceana, devidamente criticada para a análise da produção dos signos no nível da representação da consciência. Pretende-se com isto considerar o signo em toda a sua extensão, e não reduzido ao mero domínio do ""simbólico"", e tornar mais claro o lugar e o papel das diversas formas ideológicas no interior da "praxis".

Contrary to some propositions of Mikhail Bakhtin (or N. V. Volochinov) concerning the production of language and of literary discourse, it is proposed a critical application of the peircean Semiotics to the analysis of the production of signs on the level of the representation of conscience. The purpose in doing so is to consider the sign in its whole breadth, not reduced to the mere domain of the "symbolic", and to make clearer the place and role of the several ideological forms within the "praxis".
