ABSTRACT The introduction of 2,4-D-tolerant soybeans (ENLIST®) offers a new potential for herbicide application. Therefore, the present study aimed to (a) evaluate the effect of combinations of post-emergent herbicides on the control of Conyza spp. and (b) assess the selectivity of the post-emergent herbicide association in soybeans, ensuring effective application without compromising the health of the crop. A field experiment with 2,4-D-tolerant soybeans utilized a randomized complete block design with 14 treatments across four replications. Treatments included various combinations of 2,4-D with glyphosate, chlorimuron-ethyl, cloransulam-methyl, imazethapyr, bentazon, and imazamox. These were applied either as a single treatment or sequentially 15 days after treatment (DAT) using glufosinate-ammonium alongside two controls without herbicide application. The results showed less than 15% control across all treatments. Abstract The flotation mechanism of galena with xanthate as the collector is generally explained based on the mixed potential of the pulp, in which an anodic electron transfer reaction from the collector to the mineral is combined with an O2 cathodic reduction. Sodium sulphide, often used as a mineral activator, strongly influences the pulp's mixed potential, and depending on the dosage applied, it can become a galena depressor reagent. In this way, the current study assesses galena flotability in the absence of collector, as well as in the presence of the collector potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and sodium sulphide. The effect of an extremely cathodic potential was also studied through the addition of hydrogen peroxide. In addition, the effect of different stages in the oxidation of the galena surface on the flotability was investigated. Moreover, the zeta potential was measured and contact angle (wettability) tests were carried out. The contact angle measurements were taken for a distilled water, PAX solution and for a mixture of PAX and sodium sulphide solution on the oxidized and non-oxidized surface of galena. All the results showed that galena could be floated in all the PAX concentrations tested. It was observed that a moderate oxidation in the galena surface may contribute to an improvement of its flotation with PAX. Resumen La aplicación de herbicidas preemergentes es una estrategia de control de malezas, sin embargo, estos productos deben presentar residualidad para el control de diferentes flujos germinativos. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar la eficacia de herbicidas preemergentes en diferentes flujos de germinación de Merremia aegyptia, Mucuna aterrima y Ricinus communis, cuando se aplican sobre diferentes cantidades de paja y diferentes períodos secos simulados. El experimento se realizó en un diseño factorial 4 × 2 × 2 con cuatro repeticiones, el tratamiento incluye cuatro períodos secos (0, 30, 60 y 90), dos cantidades de paja (0 y 10 t ha-1) y dos flujos de germinación. Abstract Preemergent herbicides are a frequent weed control strategy. Considering different crop germinative fluxes, these products must present long-lasting weed control. This study evaluated preemergent herbicides in different germination fluxes of Merremia aegyptia, Mucuna aterrima and Ricinus communis when applied to different quantities of straw and different simulated dry periods. The experiment was conducted in a 4 × 2 × 2 factorial design with four replications. The treatments included four dry periods (0, 30, 60, and 90 days), two straw quantities (0 and 10 t ha-1), and two germination fluxes. The herbicides amicarbazone (1225 g ha-1), imazapic (147 g ha-1), sulfentrazone (800 g ha-1), and tebuthiuron (900 g ha-1) were applied for preemergence weed control, and germination flush fluxes were evaluated at 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days after emergence (DAE) while verifying plant dry mass. Amicarbazone controlled less than 80% of the studied species at the 90-day dry period in the presence of straw. Imazapic did not present control residue for any of the species analyzed. Sulfentrazone showed the same control pattern at all germination fluxes, regardless of the amount of straw. Tebuthiuron successfully controlled all species in the first germination flush, exceeding 80% regardless of the amount of straw. Abstract The São Francisco River Basin (SFRB) is extremely important for both the local rural and urban population, running through several states and municipalities in Brazil. Thus, the study of the spatial distribution of rainfall in the SFRB, supported by the application of geostatistics, offers valuable insights for water management and planning. In this study, data from 341 rainfall stations were used, corresponding to the period between 1989 and 2018, and monthly accumulated rainfall analyzed. About the trends, positive estimates for latitude, except for April, highlight that the accumulated precipitation decreases from south to north each month. In December, 85.10% of the spatial variability of rainfall was explained by the trend of rainfall concerning geographical coordinates. Concerning spatial dependence, the analyzed data predominantly exhibited the exponential variogram model. The conducted analyses offered a holistic view of rainfall in the region, facilitating the understanding of spatial patterns and shedding light on challenges in the face of climate change. Our research limited on the spatial modeling of rainfall in the SFRB, and future work should include modeling socio-economic and environmental impacts in the region concerning the spatial irregularity of rainfall. Resumo A Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio São Francisco (SFRB) é de extrema importância tanto para a população rural quanto urbana local, percorrendo diversos estados e municípios do Brasil. O estudo da distribuição espacial das chuvas na SFRB, apoiado na aplicação da geoestatística, oferece insights valiosos para a gestão e planejamento hídrico. Nesse estudo foram utilizados dados de 341 estações pluviométricas, correspondentes ao período entre 1989 e 2018, e analisadas as chuvas acumuladas mensais. Sobre a tendência, estimativas positivas para a latitude, com exceção de abril, ressaltam que a precipitação acumulada em cada mês diminui de sul para norte. ABSTRACT Sex determination plays a crucial role in the post-mortem identification of human remains. One effective approach for obtaining sex-related data is to use measurements of anatomical structures such as the mandible. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of mandibular radiomorphometric indices from panoramic radiographs (PRs) for the identification of sexual dimorphism. The study sample included 300 PRs of individuals aged 51 to 80 years from the northeastern region of Brazil. Four linear measures and three numerical indices were analyzed with Inkscape® version 1.0.1 for Windows by two blinded evaluators. After statistical analysis, the results showed that the linear measurements obtained from PRs are a reliable method for sex identification. Uma maneira de adquirir dados quanto ao sexo é utilizar mensurações de estruturas como a mandíbula. O objetivo principal deste estudo é avaliar a utilização de índices radiomorfométricos de mandíbulas para a identificação de dimorfismo sexual, através de radiografias panorâmicas. ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the biomass yield, volume, and basic density of Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth. wood in response to planting densities in 13-year-old trees. The research was conducted in Mossoró-RN using a randomized block design with three replications. Plants obtained from seeds collected from the natural vegetation of the Caatinga in Mossoró-RN were subjected to densities of 800 (5.0 m x 2.5 m), 1600 (2.5 m x 2.5 m), 2000 (2.0 m x 2.5 m), and 4000 (1.0 m x 2.5 m) plants ha-1. The following characteristics were assessed: plant height, diameter at breast height, cross-sectional area, basal area, individual volume, stere volume, aboveground biomass, and basic wood density. The dendrometric variables showed a high correlation with planting density. For DBH and cross-sectional area, higher values were observed in the lowest planting densities. The highest values of basal area, volume (m3), stere volume, and dry biomass per hectare were found at the highest planting density. RESUMO Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o rendimento de biomassa, o volume e a densidade básica da madeira de Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth. em resposta às densidades de plantio, em árvores com 13 anos de idade. A pesquisa foi realizada em Mossoró-RN no delineamento de blocos ao acaso com três repetições. Plantas obtidas a partir de sementes coletadas da vegetação natural da Caatinga do referido município, foram submetidas às densidades de 800 (5,0 m x 2,5 m), 1600 (2,5 m x 2,5 m), 2000 (2,0 m x 2,5 m) e 4000 (1,0 m x 2,5 m) plantas ha-1. Foram avaliadas as seguintes características: altura da planta, diâmetro à altura do peito, área transversal, área basal, volume individual, volume estéreo, biomassa da parte aérea e a densidade básica da madeira. ABSTRACT This study responds to the following problem: what are the conceptions of the initial training curriculum for rural teachers expressed in the Curricular Pedagogical Projects (PPCs) offered by federal universities in the Northern Region of Brazil? The curriculum concepts identified in the basic theoretical references for defining the curriculum conception that guided the PPCs were analyzed, as well as the concepts and principles that structure them. The objective is to analyze the curriculum concepts presented by the PPCs for Initial Training for Rural Teachers offered in the Amazon. This is documentary research based on Apple (1999), Gimeno Sacristán (2000), Quijano (2005), Freire (2011) and Arroyo (2019). The methodology corresponded to three phases: 1. Mapping the PPCs of seven federal universities in the Northern Region of Brazil; 2. Description and analysis of these; and 3. Production of research report. The conceptions of curriculum expressed in the PPCs analyzed are linked to critical conceptions of curriculum arising mainly from Marxist, Freirean and decolonizing theoretical references. Some PPCs omit the theoretical references on which they are based. On the other hand, all the PPCs analyzed contain a robust number of legal references, which highlights a greater concern with legal prescription than with theoretical foundations. RESUMO Esse estudo responde ao seguinte problema: quais são as concepções de currículo de formação inicial de professores do campo expressas nos Projetos Pedagógicos Curriculares (PPCs) oferecidos por universidades federais da Região Norte do Brasil? Analisou-se as concepções de currículo identificadas nas referências teóricas de base para a definição da concepção de currículo que orientaram os PPCs, bem como os conceitos e princípios que os estruturam. O objetivo é analisar que concepções de currículo apresentam os PPCs de Formação Inicial de Professores do Campo oferecidos na Amazônia. Trata-se de uma pesquisa documental fundamentada em Apple (1999), Gimeno Sacristán (2000), Quijano (2005), Freire (2011) e Arroyo (2019). A metodologia correspondeu a três fases: 1. Abstract Introduction Onodi cells (OCs) are posterior ethmoid cells that are located above the sphenoid sinus, close to or even surrounding the carotid artery and optic nerve. Objective To investigate and evaluate the volumetric variation of OCs through multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) scans. Methods We performed a retrospective review of MSCT scans of 79 subjects, 40 male and 39 female patients, Whose age ranged from 18 to 83 (mean: 39.6) years. The volumes of the OCs on the right and left sides were measured using the ITK-SNAP software (open-source) with semiautomatic segmentation. The possible relationships involving age, gender, contact with the optic nerve, extension of the pneumatization of the posterior ethmoid cells into the clinoid processes, mucous thickening in the anterior and posterior ethmoid cells, and obliteration of the sphenoethmoidal complex were analyzed with the Pearson correlation and Chi-squared tests according to the type of data compared and logistic regression models (p < 0.05). Results We observed that an increase of one unit in the volume of OCs also increases the chance of extension of pneumatization into the clinoid processes by 0.15% (p = 0.001). Resumen: La luxación traumática atlanto-occipital (LTAO) es una lesión grave, poco frecuente y con una elevada tasa de mortalidad. En este artículo presentamos el caso de un paciente politraumatizado de 28 años que sufrió una LTAO asociada a luxación rotatoria en C1-C2, a la avulsión de cóndilos y traumatismo craneoencefálico como consecuencia de un accidente de tráfico, con parada cardiorrespiratoria en el lugar del accidente. El paciente presentaba déficits motores y sensoriales y sufrió otras complicaciones clínicas graves durante su hospitalización. Luego de dos años de tratamiento quirúrgico, el paciente evoluciona favorablemente con recuperación completa de las alteraciones neuromotoras y sensitivas. El caso presentado demuestra que la recuperación neurológica con mínimas secuelas es posible, incluso después de un pronóstico desfavorable debido a una lesión grave y al alto riesgo de muerte derivado de este tipo de traumatismos. ABSTRACT Traumatic atlanto-occipital dislocation is a rare, severe, and usually fatal injury. In this paper, we report the case of a 28-year-old patient with multiple trauma, who suffered an atlanto-occipital dislocation (AOD) associated with rotatory dislocation at C1-C2, condyle fracture and traumatic brain injury resulting from a car accident, with a cardiopulmonary arrest at the accident site. The patient had motor and sensory deficits, suffering other complications of clinical severity during hospitalization. After two years of surgical treatment follow-up, the patient had a complete recovery of neuromotor and sensory functions. This case demonstrates that neurological recovery with minimal sequelae is possible, even after an unfavorable prognosis resulting from a severe injury with a high risk of death as this kind of trauma. It is essential for health professionals to have the ability to identify and treat AOD, ensuring improved clinical outcomes, reducing mortality and morbidity, and providing a better life to affected patients. Resumo: A luxação traumática atlanto-occipital (LTAO) é uma lesão rara, grave e com alto índice de mortalidade. Neste artigo relatamos o caso de um paciente de 28 anos, politraumatizado, que sofreu uma LTAO associada à luxação rotatória em C1-C2, à avulsão de côndilo e ao traumatismo crânio encefálico decorrente de acidente automobilístico, com relato de uma parada cardiorrespiratória no local do acidente. O paciente deu entrada no serviço com déficit motor e sensitivo, sofrendo outras intercorrências de gravidade clínica durante a internação. Após dois anos do tratamento cirúrgico, o paciente evoluiu favoravelmente com completa recuperação das alterações neuromotoras e sensitivas. Abstract The Bauru Supersequence comprises two chronocorrelates groups, namely, Caiuá and Bauru. While substantial efforts have been dedicated to detailed mapping in the eastern portion of the Bauru Basin, the western part, specifically the Caiuá Group, remains unresolved and undivided. The aim of this research was to characterize the occurrence area of the Rio Paraná Formation in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, which is located in the Midwest region of Brazil, as well as its lithostratigraphic characteristics, and the implications for a better understanding of the paleoclimate and paleogeography of that region during the Cretaceous. The Rio Paraná Formation is constituted by six lithofacies: sandstone with cross-stratification (Sct), sandstone with trough cross-stratification (Sct-t), sandstone with cross-stratification pebbles (Sctp), massive sandstone (Sm), massive sandstone with fragments of basalt (Smb), and sandy mudstone (Fme). It was possible to group three facies associations: large-size eolian dunes, interdunes, and sand sheet deposits. The direction of paleocurrent is southwest, which is similar to those previously recognized in the eastern part of the basin and chronocorrelates basins in Brazil. Abstract Objective To evaluate the immunoexpression profile for CD8, CD3, CD20 and CD68 in the process and carcinogenesis of Carcinoma of the vermilion lip. Methods Average cell count with positive expression for CD3, CD8, CD20 and CD68. The CD8/CD3 ratio calculated in the region was based on the percentage of positive cells in a total of malignant cells. Kruska-Wallis/Dunn, Mann-Whitney and Spearman correlation tests (SPSS, p< 0.05) were used. Results In the Aquitic Cheilitis samples, there was an increase in intraepithelial CD8+ and CD68+. In LSCCs, there was an increase in peritumoral and intratumoral CD3+, CD8+, CD20+ and CD68+ cells. In peritumoral LSCC, CD3+ and CD8+ showed a direct correlation (p= 0.004), and CD68+ and CD8+ (p= 0.017). In the intraepithelial region, CD8+ correlated with CD20+ (p= 0.014) and CD68+ (p= 0.013). In the CAs, CD3 (p< 0.001) and CD8 (p= 0.025) correlated intraepithelial and subepithelial. In LSCC CD3+ (p= 0.002), CD8+ (p= 0.001) and CD68+ (p= 0.030) had intra and peritumoral correlation. Abstract The equivalent wave impedance circuit model (ECM-WI) is presented for the analysis of frequency selective surfaces (FSS). The development of the analytical model is based on homogenization theory, as well as analogies between wave theory and transmission line theory. The coplanar strip model and the concept of wave impedance are used to scale the Marcuvitz model for periodic strip gratings of conductive strips, as well as to consider the influence of the presence of a lossy dielectric substrate on the frequency response of the FSS. In particular, the model is applied to the analysis of square loop FSSs and considering the normal incidence. The results obtained are presented by comparing full-wave simulations for the two proposed models, obtaining average deviations in absolute values (%) of 2.11 and 0.38 for resonance frequency and 3.45 and 5.49 for bandwidth. SUMMARY Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a common genetic congenital disease characterized by somatic overgrowth and its broad clinical spectrum includes pre- and post-natal macrosomia, macroglossia, visceromegaly, increased risk of neonatal hypoglycemia, and development of embryonic tumors. BWS occurs due to genetic/epigenetic changes involving growth-regulating genes, located on region 11p15, with an important genotype-phenotype correlation. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) comprises a spectrum of autosomal recessive diseases presenting a variety of clinical manifestations due to a deficiency in one of the enzymes involved in cortisol secretion. Early diagnosis based on newborn screening prevents the adrenal crisis and early infant death. However, high 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) levels can occur in newborns or premature infants without CAH, in situations of stress due to maternal or neonatal factors. Here, we report new cases of false-positive diagnosis of 21-hydroxylase deficiency during newborn screening – two girls and one boy with BWS. Methylation-specific multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification revealed a gain of methylation in the H19 differentially methylated region. Notably, all three cases showed a complete normalization of biochemical changes, highlighting the transient nature of these hormonal findings that imitate the classical form of CAH. Abstract This cross-sectional study evaluated the association between salivary immunoglobulins, plaque index, and gingival index in Brazilian children with and without type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1). The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) checklist for the reporting of observational studies was followed. The DM1 group had 38 children, and an equal number of volunteers matched by sex and age were recruited as controls. Clinical examination was performed for plaque index and gingival index determination. Non-stimulated whole saliva was collected. Concentrations of IgA, IgG, and IgM were determined by ELISA test. Data were tested by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whitney, and Spearman tests and a multiple linear regression model (p<0.05) was performed. Gingival index was higher in the Control (DM1: 0.16±0.17; Control: 0.24±0.23, p=0.040). In DM1, there was a correlation between IgA and age (rho=0.371, p=0.024), IgM and IgG (rho=0.459, p=0.007), and IgM and gingival index (rho=0.394, p=0.014). In DM1, multiple linear regression showed that age (p=0.041; β=0.363), gingival index (p=0.041; β=0.398), and plaque index (p=0.008; β=-0.506) were good predictors of IgA levels in saliva.
