Resumo Testamos a hipótese que das espécies estudadas do Semiárido brasileiro, as funcionalmente mais semelhantes com a arbórea exótica Azadirachta indicaseriam mais afetadas na germinação e no desenvolvimento inicial. Inicialmente foi produzido extrato bruto das folhas frescas da exótica em seis diluições. Para cada diluição foram colocadas para germinar 25 sementes, de quatro espécies nativas ( Cenostigma pyramidale, Libidibia ferrea, Mimosa caesalpiniifoliae Amburana cearensis), em placas de Petri com quatro repetições para cada espécie, onde foram avaliados: comprimento da radícula, porcentagem de emergência, índice de velocidade de emergência e tempo médio de emergência. Para avaliar a influência da exótica sobre o desenvolvimento dos indivíduos das espécies estudadas foi realizado um experimento em casa de vegetação. As sementes foram plantadas em 10 baldes de 20 l., sendo cinco baldes para cada espécie nativa isolada e cinco para ela em interação com a espécie exótica. O experimento durou quatro meses, e os atributos funcionais dos indivíduos foram coletados. Das nativas analisadas, de acordo com a análise de agrupamento usando os atributos funcionais das espécies plantadas isoladamente, M. caesalpiniifolia, C. pyramidalee L. ferreaforam funcionalmente mais próximas da exótica. No experimento de germinação notou-se que o extrato afetou apenas o comprimento da raiz, independente da proximidade funcional. Notamos que apenas M. caesalpiniifolia, plantada em interação, teve seu desenvolvimento inicial fortemente inibido. A semelhança funcional entre a exótica e as nativas não influenciou na germinação, mas afetou negativamente o desenvolvimento.

Abstract We tested the hypothesis that of the species studied in the Brazilian Semiarid, the ones most functionally similar to tree Azadirachta indicawould be more affected by this exotic species during germination and early development. At first, we produced a crude extract of A. indica fresh leaves in six different dilutions. We placed 25 seeds of four native species ( Cenostigma pyramidale, Libidibia ferrea, Mimosa caesalpiniifolia, and Amburana cearensis) to germinate in Petri dishes for each dilution, with four replicates for each species. We assessed: radicle length, emergence percentage, emergence speed index, and mean emergence time. We conducted an experiment in a greenhouse to assess how the exotic plant affected the development of individual plants of the studied species. We planted five seeds of each native species alone and five in interaction with the exotic species using ten 20-l buckets. The experiment lasted four months, and the functional attributes of the individuals were collected. Among the native species analyzed, according to the cluster analysis using the functional attributes of the species planted alone, M. caesalpiniifolia, C. pyramidaleand L. ferreawere functionally more similar to the exotic species. In the germination experiment, the extract affected only root length, regardless of the functional similarity. We noticed that only M. caesalpiniifoliahad its early development strongly inhibited when planted in interaction with the exotic species. Although the functional similarity between the exotic and the native species did not influence germination, it negatively affected the development.

ABSTRACT We assessed the impacts of the biological invasion of Azadirachta indica on the quality of plant species native to a Seasonally Dry Tropical Forest. We planted Amburana cearensis, Libidibia ferrea, Mimosa caesalpiniifolia, and Cenostigma pyramidale individuals alone and interacting with the exotic species. We measured their diameters at ground level and heights for four months, calculating their monthly and general average. After this period, seedlings were destroyed to obtain their number of leaves, leaf area, specific leaf area, length and primary root area, wood density, wood dry matter, leaf dry matter, shoot dry matter, primary root dry matter, secondary root dry matter, root system dry matter, and total dry matter. The presence of the exotic species affected the functional characteristics of native species in different ways. We observed negative effects in M. caesalpiniifolia and A. cearensis, positive effects in C. pyramidale, and mixed effects in L. ferrea. In addition, we identified conflicting demands between pairs of characteristics of the interacting species A. cearensis and M. caesalpiniifolia. Based on the results, it is possible to conclude that A. indica decreases the quality of individuals of most native species studied, which may have consequences for their establishment and the local biodiversity.

RESUMO Avaliaram-se os efeitos da aplicação de diferentes diluições de um esgoto doméstico tratado como água de reúso no desenvolvimento de mudas de Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth e Amburana cearensis (Fr. All) A.C Smith. O experimento se deu por meio da utilização do arisco como substrato e da irrigação com os tratamentos compostos por cinco diluições de água de reúso com água de abastecimento, com cinco repetições cada, sendo eles: T1 (100% água de reúso + 0% água de abastecimento), T2 (75% água de reúso + 25% água de abastecimento), T3 (50% água de reúso + 50% água de abastecimento), T4 (25% água de reúso + 75% água de abastecimento) e T5 (0% água de reúso + 100% água de abastecimento). Os efeitos das diferentes diluições do esgoto tratado foram avaliados nas seguintes características funcionais: número de folhas, tamanho da raiz principal, quantidade de matéria seca das folhas, da raiz principal e das raízes secundárias. Além disso, foram mensurados altura da planta e diâmetro do coleto durante 30, 60 e 90 dias. Os resultados obtidos para A. cearensis demonstraram que matéria seca das folhas e das raízes secundárias diferiram entre os tratamentos, sendo encontrados os maiores valores em T2, T3 e T4. Nos dados de diâmetro, ao longo do tempo ocorreu diferença significativa aos 90 dias para o tratamento T3. Para M. caesalpiniifolia, as diluições do esgoto não apresentaram diferença significativa entre os tratamentos. Desse modo, concluiu-se que o esgoto doméstico tratado proporcionou efeito positivo ou neutro no desenvolvimento, podendo ser uma fonte hídrica, na forma diluída ou concentrada, potencial para a irrigação de mudas dessas espécies.

ABSTRACT This work has assessed the effects of different dilutions of treated domestic wastewater, such as reuse water, on the development of Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth and Amburana cearensis (Fr. All) A.C Smith. seedlings. The experiment made use of sandy soil as substrate and irrigation with treatment consisted of five dilutions of reuse water and public supply water (PSW), with five repetitions each, as follows: T1 (100% reuse water + 0% PSW), T2 (75% reuse water + 25% public supply water), T3 (50% reuse water + 50% public supply water), T4 (25% reuse water + 75% public supply water), and T5 (0% reuse water + 100% public supply water). Effects of the different dilutions of treated wastewater were evaluated according to the following functional characteristics: number of leaves, size of primary root, dry matter content of leaves, dry matter content of primary root, and dry matter content of lateral roots. In addition, plant height and collar diameter were also measured over the period of 30, 60, and 90 days. Results obtained for A. cearensis show that dry matter content of leaves and dry matter content of primary root had the highest values with T2, T3, and T4. As far as diameter over time is concerned, there was a significant difference for the T3 treatment in 90 days. Treatments did not produce any meaningful differences in the case of M. Caesalpiniifolia. It was possible to conclude, therefore, that treated domestic wastewater had neutral or positive effects on development and could be a potential water source to irrigate seedlings of these species, in both diluted and concentrated forms.

RESUMO As plantas lenhosas foram examinadas em uma borda formada há aproximadamente 35 anos em um fragmento de Floresta Atlântica. Foram examinados três ambientes: borda, intermediário e interior. A densidade e a área basal de árvores foram semelhantes entre os três ambientes e também próximas à de outros estudos publicados com dados da mesma região. A riqueza de espécies foi maior na borda. Sub-bosque mostrou grande riqueza de espécies no interior da floresta, mas grande diversidade e equitabilidade no ambiente intermediário. Os sub-bosques dos ambientes próximos à borda da floresta possuem mais indivíduos com diâmetros maiores que no interior, embora com densidade e área basal menores. Os resultados indicam a existência de padrões distintos para o dossel e para o sub-bosque, que provavelmente resultaram dos diferentes tempos de resposta desses dois estratos da vegetação, com o sub-bosque mostrando-se mais sensível a alterações na estrutura ambiental.

ABSTRACT The woody plants in an edge area formed approximately 35 years ago in an Atlantic Forest fragment in northeastern Brazil were examined, and three environments defined: edge, intermediate, and interior. Canopy tree densities and basal areas were found to be similar in all three environments, and also similar to previous published studies in the same region; species richness was greatest at the forest edge. The understory showed greater species richness in the forest interior, but greater diversity and equitability in the intermediate environment. Understory environments close to the forest edge demonstrated larger stem diameters than in the forest interior, although at lesser densities and with smaller total basal areas. Our results indicated the existence of distinct patterns in canopy and understory that most likely reflect differences in the response times of these two vegetation layers, with the understory being more sensitive to alterations in environmental structure.

RESUMO Este estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de investigar a influência da heterogeneidade espacial dos fatores abióticos sobre os padrões espaciais da estrutura da vegetação do componente lenhoso e sua regeneração em uma área de caatinga, no sertão de Pernambuco. O estudo foi realizado em uma área de caatinga localizada no Parque Estadual da Mata da Pimenteira, município de Serra Talhada, Pernambuco. A amostragem foi dividida em dois ambientes, um próximo ao curso d'água com vegetação mais densa (I) e outro a 100 m do curso d'água com vegetação mais aberta (II). Em cada ambiente foram instaladas quatro parcelas permanentes de 20 × 50 m subdivididas em 10 parcelas de 10 × 10 m, nas quais foram medidos os indivíduos vivos com diâmetro do caule ao nível do solo (DNS) ≥ 3 cm e altura total ≥ 1 m. Em um dos vértices de cada parcela foi plotada uma subparcela de 2 × 2 m para medir a altura e o diâmetro dos indivíduos das espécies amostradas no componente lenhoso com DNS entre 0,5 e 2,9 cm (regeneração). Foram calculados os descritores fitossociológicos gerais da comunidade dos diferentes ambientes e avaliada a distribuição de indivíduos em histogramas, tanto do componente lenhoso como para a regeneração. Após verificação da normalidade pelo teste Kolmogorov-Smirnov, os valores dos descritores fitossociológicos por parcela foram comparados entre os ambientes. Nos dados com distribuição normal, foi empregada a análise de variância (ANOVA) de um critério. Dados sem distribuição normal foram analisados pelo teste não paramétrico de Mann-Whitney. Os ambientes apresentaram diferenças significativas quanto ao número de indivíduos (4047,5 versus 3332,5 ind.ha-1) e área basal (23,6 versus 17,6 m2. ha-1), com valores significativamente superiores no ambiente I, padrão oposto ao da regeneração em que o número de indivíduos e a área basal foram maiores no ambiente II (9187,5 versus 10937,5 ind.ha-1) e (1,9 versus 2,5 m2. ha-1), respectivamente. No total foram amostradas 50 espécies (incluindo o componente arbóreo e regenerante), havendo diferenças significativas em termos de diversidade entre os ambientes nos diferentes estratos, embora a similaridade seja superior a 80%. A maioria das variáveis químicas e texturais dos solos não diferiram estatisticamente, com exceção dos teores de Al3+ que apresentou teores superiores no ambiente I. Das demais variáveis edáficas, apenas a pedregosidade diferiu entre os ambientes I e II (3,87 versus 1,47%). A distinção fisionômica da vegetação entre os ambientes é resultado da presença de populações com indivíduos de maiores alturas e diâmetros no ambiente I. A heterogeneidade espacial das variáveis ambientais encontrada nos ambientes estudados, explicou parte das variações das características florístico-estrutural da vegetação.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate the influence of spatial heterogeneity of abiotic factors on the spatial patterns of vegetation structure of the woody component and of its regeneration; it was carried out in an area of "caatinga" located in the Parque Estadual Mata of Pimenteira, municipality of "Serra Talhada", interior of Pernambuco State, Brazil. The sample was divided into two environments, one near the watercourse with denser vegetation (I) and another at 100 meters away from the watercourse with more open vegetation (II). In each environment, four permanent plots of 20×50 m were installed and divided into ten plots of 10×10 m; alive individuals with stem ground level diameter (GD) of ≥3 cm and total height of ≥1 m were measured. In one corner of each plot, a sub-plot of 2×2 m was allocated to measure the individuals' height and diameter of the sampled species in woody component with GD from 0.5 to 2.9 cm (regeneration). Community's general phytosociological descriptors of the different environments were calculated and the individuals' distribution in histograms was evaluated for the woody component as for regeneration. After testing for normality using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, values of phytosociological descriptors per plot were compared between the environments. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of a criterion was used for data with normal distribution. Data without normal distribution were analyzed by non-parametric Mann-Whitney test. Environments showed significant differences in the number of individuals (4047.5 versus 3332.5 ind.ha-1) and basal area (23.6 versus 17.6 m2. ha-1) with significantly higher values in environment I; this pattern was opposite to the regenerating pattern in which the number of individuals and basal area were higher in the environment II (9187.5 vs. 10937.5 ind.ha-1 and 1.9 vs. 2.5 m2.ha-1, respectively). In total, fifty species, including woody and regenerating component, were sampled; significant differences in diversity were found between environments in the different strata, although the similarity was more than 80%. Most chemical and textural soil variables did not differ statistically, except for levels of Al3+, which showed higher levels in the environment I. Among other edaphic variables, only the stony variables differed between environments I and II (3.87 versus 1.47%). The vegetation physiognomic distinction between the environments is result from populations' presence of individuals with greater heights and diameters in the environment I. The spatial heterogeneity of environmental variables found in the studied environments explained part of changes in floristic and structural characteristics of the vegetation.
