RESUMO Este artigo tem como objetivo abordar as traduções do romance Beloved (1987), de Toni Morrison, no Brasil, com foco em alguns de seus paratextos. Inicia-se com uma reflexão teórica sobre tradução que a considera como um processo que ultrapassa a transposição linguística entre o texto-fonte e o texto-meta, uma vez que envolve fatores sociais, históricos, culturais, ideológicos, entre outros. Em seguida, apresenta-se a teoria da paratradução, segundo a qual os paratextos que compõem uma obra traduzida são importantes elementos a serem examinados pelo pesquisador, já que contribuem para a construção de sentidos. Posteriormente, o artigo traz um breve panorama sobre Toni Morrison e sua produção literária, destacando Beloved, e prossegue com uma análise das capas e contracapas das diferentes edições de Amada, título da referida obra no Brasil. Por fim, verifica-se que, em geral, as paratraduções brasileiras de Beloved reforçam as imagens de Morrison como escritora premiada e do romance em questão como um livro aclamado pela crítica.

ABSTRACT This article aims to approach the translations of the novel Beloved (1987), by Toni Morrison, in Brazil, focusing on some of their paratexts. It begins with a theoretical reflection on translation that considers it as a process that goes beyond the linguistic transposition between the source text and the target text, since it involves social, historical, cultural, ideological factors, among others. After that, the theory of paratranslation is presented, according to which the paratexts that make up a translated work are important elements to be examined by the researcher, since they contribute to meaning construction. Subsequently, the article provides a brief overview of Toni Morrison and her literary production, highlighting Beloved, and continues with an analysis of the covers and back covers of the different editions of Amada, title of the referred work in Brazil. Finally, it appears that, in general, Beloved’s Brazilian paratranslations reinforce the images of Morrison as an award-winning writer and of the novel in question as a critically acclaimed book.

RESUMO Este artigo objetiva abordar a tradução de textos afrodiásporicos no Brasil, com foco na obra Women, Race & Class (1981), de Angela Davis, traduzida por Heci Regina Candiani e publicada pela editora Boitempo com o título de Mulheres, raça e classe (2016). Para tanto, pretende-se levantar discussões como: De que modo se constituem os paratextos (capa, quarta capa, prefácio, notas de rodapé, entre outros)? Quais foram as estratégias tradutórias adotadas? Qual o perfil da editora? Como tem sido a recepção crítica do livro no Brasil? Nesse sentido, na busca por compreender o contexto da tradução de Women, Race & Class no cenário cultural brasileiro, serão utilizados como base os Estudos da Tradução sob uma perspectiva descritivista. Os pensamentos de teóricos como Lambert e Van Gorp (1985), Bassnett e Lefevere (1990), Toury (1995) e Gentzler e Tymoczko (2002), os quais discutem a importância de aspectos históricos, sociais, ideológicos e de poder relativos à tradução serão considerados. As contribuições de Sonia E. Alvarez e Claudia de Lima Costa (2013; 2014) sobre políticas de tradução de teorias e práticas feministas envolvendo mulheres latino-americanas e latinas que vivem nos Estados Unidos também serão relevantes para uma reflexão sobre questões de gênero e étnico-raciais em Mulheres, raça e classe.

ABSTRACT This article aims to address the translation of Afro-diasporic texts in Brazil, focusing on Angela Davis' Women, Race & Class (1981), translated by Heci Regina Candiani and published by Boitempo as Mulheres, raça e classe (2016). To do so, we intend to discuss: How are the paratexts (cover, back cover, preface, footnotes, among others) constituted? What were the translation strategies adopted? What is the publisher's profile? How has the critical reception of the book been in Brazil? Therefore, to understand the context of the translation of Women, Race & Class in the Brazilian cultural scene, this study is based on Descriptive Translation Studies. The works of theorists such as Lambert and Van Gorp (1985), Bassnett and Lefevere (1990), Toury (1995) and Gentzler and Tymoczko (2002), who discuss the importance of historical, social, ideological and power aspects related to translation will be considered. The contributions of Sonia E. Alvarez and Claudia de Lima Costa (2013, 2014) on policies of translation of feminist theories and practices involving Latin American women and U.S.- based Latinas will also be relevant for a reflection on gender and ethnic-racial issues in Mulheres, raça e classe.
