Abstract The disruption of cell cycle phases is one of the characteristics acquired by tumor cells during the process of carcinogenesis. In this study, we investigated the differences in cell cycle phases among human cell lines derived from triple-negative (BT-549), colorectal (RKO-AS45-1), and ovarian (TOV-21G) cancers treated with everolimus, recombinant TGF-alpha, and Methotrexate (MTX). Our data showed that MTX induced the transition from G1 to S phase in TOV-21G, while TGF-alpha decreased the percentage of cells in G1. For the triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell line, TGF-alpha reduced the number of cells in G1. Resumo Eugenia klotzschiana (pêra-do-cerrado) pertence à família Myrtaceae. É caracterizada como planta alimentícia não convencional, sendo explorada de forma extrativista. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido para conhecer o comportamento germinativo das sementes de E. klotzschiana e ainda a sua sensibilidade à dessecação. Após a despolpa dos frutos, realizada manualmente, as sementes foram armazena das em embalagens plásticas. O teor de água inicial foi determinado pelo método da estufa a 105°C por 24 horas, com valor de 46,6%. Separaram-se, em seguida,subamostras para obtenção dos demais teores de água desejados: 40%, 32%, 22% e 15%, sendo,respectivamente,os tratamentos 2, 3, 4 e 5. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância(ANOVA) e, quando significativas pelo teste F (p<0,05), as médias foram comparadas pelo teste T. Abstract: Eugenia klotzschiana, commonly known as pêra-do-cerrado, belongs to the Myrtaceae family. It is an unconventional food plant that is exploited in an extractive manner. The purpose of this study was to investigate the germination behavior of E. klotzschiana O. Berg seeds and their sensitivity to desiccation. The seeds were manually pulped from the fruits and stored in plastic containers. The initial water content was subsequently determined using the oven method at 105°C for 24 hours, yielding a value of 46.6%. Sub-samples were then separated to obtain the desired water contents of 40%, 32%, 22%, and 15% for treatments 2, 3, 4, and 5. The data underwent analysis of variance (ANOVA) and, if significant by the F test (p<0.05), the means were compared using the T test. Graphs with 95% confidence intervals were generated to illustrate the comparisons. The seedling development data was arranged in a box plot. The R software was used for these analyses. The data analysis revealed that E. klotzschiana O. Berg seeds do not have the potential to germinate with a water content lower than 22.50% moisture. Resumo Objetivo O presente estudo avaliou o perfil de mutações germinativas presentes em pacientes submetidas a aconselhamento genético para avaliação de risco para câncer de mama (CM), câncer de ovário (OC) e câncer de endométrio (CE) com possível padrão hereditário. Métodos Foram analisados os prontuários de 382 pacientes que realizaram aconselhamento genético após consentimento informado. Um total de 55,76% dos pacientes (213/382) eram sintomáticos (história pessoal de câncer), e 44,24% (169/382) eram assintomáticos (ausência da doença). As variáveis analisadas foram idade, sexo, naturalidade, história pessoal ou familiar de CM, OC, CE bem como outros tipos de câncer associados a síndromes hereditárias. As diretrizes de nomenclatura da Human Genome Variation Society (HGVS) foram usadas para nomear as variantes e seu significado biológico foi determinado pela comparação de 11 bancos de dados. Resultados Identificamos 53 mutações distintas: 29 variantes patogênicas, 13 variantes de significado indeterminado e 11 benignas. As mutações mais frequentes foram BRCA1 c.470_471delCT, BRCA1 c.4675 + 1G > T e BRCA2 c.2T > G. Além disso, 21 variantes parecem ter sido descritas pela primeira vez no Brasil. Além das mutações BRCA1/2, foram encontradas variantes em outros genes relacionados a síndromes hereditárias que predispõem a cânceres ginecológicos. Abstract Objective The present study evaluated the profile of germline mutations present in patients who underwent genetic counseling for risk assessment for breast cancer (BC), ovarian cancer (OC), and endometrial cancer (EC) with a possible hereditary pattern. Methods Medical records of 382 patients who underwent genetic counseling after signing an informed consent form were analyzed. A total of 55.76% of patients (213/382) were symptomatic (personal history of cancer), and 44.24% (169/382) were asymptomatic (absence of the disease). The variables analyzed were age, sex, place of birth, personal or family history of BC, OC, EC, as well as other types of cancer associated with hereditary syndromes. The Human Genome Variation Society (HGVS) nomenclature guidelines were used to name the variants, and their biological significance was determined by comparing 11 databases. Results We identified 53 distinct mutations: 29 pathogenic variants, 13 variants of undetermined significance (VUS), and 11 benign. The most frequent mutations were BRCA1 c.470_471delCT, BRCA1 c.4675 + 1G > T, and BRCA2 c.2T> G. Furthermore, 21 variants appear to have been described for the first time in Brazil. In addition to BRCA1/2 mutations, variants in other genes related to hereditary syndromes that predispose to gynecological cancers were found. Conclusion This study allowed a deeper understanding of the main mutations identified in families in the state of Minas Gerais and demonstrates the need to assess the family history of non-gynecological cancer for risk assessment of BC, OC, and EC. Abstract Tumor organoids have great potential as a 3D in vitro system to model cancer. In this work, we studied how the structure of hydrogels based on gelatin with methacryloyl groups (GeIMA) can affect their usage in tumor organoids. To this end, gelatin hydrogels with different levels of methacrylation and with cellulose nanocrystals (NCC) or reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were prepared and used to encapsulate human colon carcinoma cells (RKO). Mechanical properties of the hydrogels were measured in dynamic conditions at 37°C and water. Results showed that NCC was able to provide higher mechanical stability to the hydrogels. RKO cells embedded in GelMA were able to proliferate within the hydrogels, leading to the formation of groups of cells after 48 h. GelMA with higher crosslink densities and NCC tended to show higher cell population as possibly due to the higher level of stability and rigidity displayed by these hydrogels. RESUMO Devido seu elevado conteúdo de vitamina C, a acerola é explorada como fonte dessa vitamina para o enriquecimento de produtos industriais. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo desenvolver um método de monitoramento do conteúdo de vitamina C usando o infravermelho próximo (NIR), assim foram estudadas diferentes etapas durante sua extração de acerola. Os modelos de calibração e validação foram obtidos por regressão dos quadrados mínimos parciais com a correlação dos valores do método de referência por espectrofotometria no visível a 525 nm e dos dados de absorção por espectroscopia no infravermelho próximo de 800 a 2.500 nm. O modelo de quantificação mais robusto foi determinado utilizando o coeficiente de determinação (R2) e os erros de validação interna (RMSECV) e de previsão (RMSEP). O conteúdo de vitamina C variou de 1.188,39 a 9.959,74 mg. 100 g-1, durante todo processamento. O erro de previsão RMSEP, 166,27 mg 100 g-1, obtido corrobora com o uso de espectroscopia NIR como uma metodologia promissora para a quantificação durante a extração de vitamina C de acerola, com a possibilidade de verificar o conteúdo em etapas intermediárias da própria linha de produção e permitindo que ajustes sejam feitos para correção.

ABSTRACT Due to high of vitamin C content, acerola is exploited as source of this vitamin for the enrichment of industrial products. This work aimed to develop a method for monitoring vitamin C content using near infrared (NIR) during extraction procedure from acerola, thereby different processing steps were evaluated. The calibration and validation models were obtained by partial least squares regression with correlation between values by the reference method, spectrophotometry at visible 525 nm, and absorption data by near infrared spectroscopy, 800 to 2500 nm. The most robust quantification model was determined using coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error of calibration (RMSECV) and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP). Vitamin C content ranged from 1,188.39 to 9,959.74 mg. 100 g-1, throughout extraction procedure. The obtained RMSEP, 166.27 mg 100 g-1, indicates NIR spectroscopy as a promising tool for quantification of vitamin C during extraction from acerola, with the possibility of verifying the content in intermediate stages of production line and moreover, enabling adjustments for correction.

BACKGROUND Biomphalaria glabrata snails are widely distributed in schistosomiasis endemic areas like America and Caribe, displaying high susceptibility to infection by Schistosoma mansoni. After the availability of B. glabrata genome and transcriptome data, studies focusing on genetic markers and small non-coding RNAs have become more relevant. The small RNAs have been considered important through their ability to finely regulate the gene expression in several organisms, thus controlling the functions like cell growth, metabolism, and susceptibility/resistance to infection. OBJECTIVE The present study aims on identification and characterisation of the repertoire of small non-coding RNAs in B. glabrata (Bgl-small RNAs). METHODS By using small RNA sequencing, bioinformatics tools and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), we identified, characterised, and validated the presence of small RNAs in B. glabrata. FINDINGS 89 mature miRNAs were identified and five of them were classified as Mollusk-specific. When compared to model organisms, sequences of B. glabrata miRNAs showed a high degree of conservation. In addition, several target genes were predicted for all the mature miRNAs identified. Furthermore, piRNAs were identified in the genome of B. glabrata for the first time. The B. glabrata piRNAs showed strong conservation of uridine as first nucleotide at 5’ end, besides adenine at 10th position. Our results showed that B. glabrata has diverse repertoire of circulating ncRNAs, several which might be involved in mollusk susceptibility to infection, due to their potential roles in the regulation of S. mansoni development. MAIN CONCLUSIONS Further studies are necessary in order to confirm the role of the Bgl-small RNAs in the parasite/host relationship thus opening new perspectives on interference of small RNAs in the organism development and susceptibility to infection.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to determine the sensitivity of ovarian cancer (OC) cell lines (TOV-21G and SKOV-3) to cisplatin and to the recombinant human TRAIL (rhTRAIL), and to evaluate the expression profile of TNFRSF10B, TNFRSF10C, TP53TG5, MDM2, BAX, BCL-2 and CASPASE-8 genes and their participation in the resistance/susceptibility mechanism of these tumor cell lines. METHODS: To determine the IC50 values associated with Cisplatin and rhTRAIL, inhibition of cell growth was observed using MTT assays in two human OC cell lines (SKOV-3 and TOV-21G). The analysis of gene expression was performed using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). RESULTS: Both cell lines had different susceptibility profiles to the tested drugs. In the SKOV-3 cell line, the IC50 values for cisplatin and for rhTRAIL were 270.83 ug/mL and 196.5 ng/mL, respectively. The same concentrations were used for TOV-21G. Different gene expression profiles were observed in each tested cell line. CASPASE-8 and TNFRSF10B expression levels could predict the response of both the cell lines to rhTRAIL alone or the response to a combination of rhTRAIL and cisplatin. In addition, we observed a relationship between BCL-2 and BAX expression that may be helpful in estimating the proliferation rate of the OC cell lines. CONCLUSION: SKOV-3 and TOV-21G respond differently to cisplatin and rhTRAIL exposure, and expression of CASPASE-8 and TNFRSF10B are good predictors of responses to these treatments.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Biomphalaria snails may display varying levels of susceptibility to Schistosoma mansoni infection. We have been developing an in vitro model to study the interaction between the snail and the parasite, using tissue-derived cell cultures from Biomphalaria. METHODS: The digestive gland- and kidney-derived cells from primary cultures of resistant (B. tenagophila Taim) and susceptible (B. tenagophila HM and B. glabrata BH) strains of Biomphalaria were exposed to S. mansoni sporocysts. RESULTS: S. mansoni sporocysts were surrounded and encapsulated exclusively by cells derived from the digestive gland (DG) of B. tenagophila Taim. The process was followed by a marked decrease in the number of free sporocysts in the culture medium. The morphological characteristics of DG-derived cells in culture have been described. CONCLUSIONS: Cells derived from DG (but not SK) primary cultures of B. tenagophila Taim may participate in S. mansoni sporocyst control.

Resumo Atualmente, os temas mais centrais da Geodésia vinculam-se ao provimento de um Sistema de Referência Global único, ao qual possam ser vinculadas de forma unívoca e com acurácia as mudanças globais de caráter geométrico e físico. O Global Geodetic Reference Frame visa a melhor estruturação dos Sistemas de Observação da Terra atualmente com perspectivas da determinação das mudanças globais ao nível de uma parte por bilhão, considerando vários parâmetros geométricos e físicos. Neste contexto pretende-se que o International Height Reference Frame, realização do International Height Reference System, possua consistência global de, pelo menos, um centímetro na sua realização e controle espaço/temporal na ordem do milímetro por ano. Considerando esses aspectos, analisou-se a evolução temporal do Datum Vertical Brasileiro de Imbituba utilizando dados maregráficos do nível do mar obtido de: Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level (1948 a 1968), University of Hawaii Sea Level Center (2001 a 2007) e Rede Maregráfica Permanente para Geodésia (2006 a 2016), e dados de distintas missões altimétricas do período de 1991 a 2015 obtidos do Banco de Dados do Deutsches Geodätisches Forschungsinstitut. Assim como, dados de posicionamento contínuo GNSS do período de 2007 a 2016, da Rede Brasileira de Monitoramento Contínuo, os quais foram utilizados para modelagem dos movimentos locais da crosta. Os resultados permitiram discriminar os movimentos da crosta em relação ao nível do mar. Para isto, utilizou-se a tendência de variação do nível do mar evidenciada pelo marégrafo, bem como a variação da componente vertical obtida com o processamento GNSS e da Sea Surface Height obtida dos dados dos satélites altímetros.

Abstract Nowadays, the most central themes of Geodesy are linked to the provision of a unique Global Reference System, to which can be tied of unique form and with sufficient accuracy the geometrical and physical global changes. The Global Geodetic Reference Frame aims at better structuring Earth Observation Systems currently with prospects of the global changes determination at the level of one part per billion, considering several geometric and physical parameters. In this context, it is intended that the International Height Reference Frame, realization of the International Height Reference System, has an overall consistency of at least one centimeter in its realization and space/temporal control in the order of millimeter per year. Considering these aspects, it was analyzed the temporal evolution of the Imbituba Brazilian Vertical Datum utilizing tide gauge data from the sea level obtained from: Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level (1948 to 1968), University of Hawaii Sea Level Center (2001 to 2007) and Permanent Tide Gauge Network for Geodesy (2006 to 2016), and data from different altimetry missions from 1991 to 2015 obtained from the database of the Deutsches Geodätisches Forschungsinstitut. As like as, data obtained from GNSS continuous positioning of period from 2007 to 2016 from Brazilian GNSS Network for Continuous Monitoring, which were used to modeling the local movements of the crust. The results allowed discriminating the crust movements in relation to the sea level. To achieve it, the trend of sea level variation evidenced by the tide gauge was used, as well as the variation of the vertical component obtained with the GNSS processing and the Sea Surface Height obtained from the satellite altimetry data.

El Global Geodetic Reference Frame tiene como objetivo la mejor estructuración de los Sistemas de Observación de la Tierra actualmente con perspectivas de la determinación de los cambios globales al nivel de una parte por mil millones, considerando varios parámetros geométricos y físicos. The city of Maceió - AL, Brazil, performed in 2007, the Municipal Plan for Risk Reduction (MPRR) in order to identify areas susceptible to erosion and landslides in the city, owing to incentives of the Cities Mi-nistry, which has been implementing since 2003 a risk reduction national policy in precarious settlements. The occupation is associated to hillside with high slope in developed soils from sedimentary rocks, susceptible to accelerated erosion and landslide in the rainy season. These elements potentiated the choice of the Mutange neighborhood for this research. The monitoring of the occupation of those areas is a substantial factor in the prevention of risks as well as in the analysis of the vulnerability of dwellings that are in tops or bases of hillside and slopes. Thus, this work presents a pilot project to update the geological risk mapping of the area known as Grota da Borracheira in the Mutange neighborhood in Maceió / Alagoas. In the methodological sketch were used residences and family records, Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and the territorial registration with the codification of all the households and the families residing in that area. Thus, a geographic information system was created with all the cadastral information. The cadastral Update allowed a more precise identification of the dwelling numbers, since the count carried out by the PMRR was done through roofis restored from the aerial photographs. The results brought a new zoning of the risk categories in the registered area. Besides, the Identification of the most affected house-holds and dwellings that have already collapsed. The maps generated and the information related to them constitute essential management tools for the Maceió Civil Defense in the identification and prevention of risks as well as for further studies that identify solutions to contain the slopes that present the greatest risk.

El municipio de Maceió - AL, Brasil realizó, en el año 2007, el Plano Municipal de Reducción de Riesgos (PMRR) con el objetivo de identificar áreas susceptibles a erosión y a deslizamientos, gracias al incentivo del Ministerio de las Ciudades, que desde el 2003 viene implementando una política nacional de reducción de riesgos en asentamientos informales. La población se establece en cortes realizados en pendientes de alta declividad, con suelos formados a partir de rocas sedimentares. Susceptibles a sufrir erosión acelerada y deslizamientos, durante las lluvias. Estos elementos potencializaron el interés en escoger el barrio Mutange para este trabajo. Por lo tanto, monitorar la ocupación poblacional en esas áreas es un elemento importante para prevenir riesgos así como también, para evaluar la vulnerabilidad de casas que se encuentran en la cima o base de laderas y en pendientes cortadas. De esa forma, este trabajo presenta un proyecto piloto de actualización del mapeamiento de riesgo geológico del área conocida como Grota da Borracheira en el Barrio Mutange en Maceió/Alagoas. En la metodología de trabajo fueron utilizados, una ficha catastral para recoger informaciones sobre las familias y también, sobre las condiciones de las casas; el Modelo Digital del Terreno (MDT) y el catastro territorial con el código de cada domicílio y familia que reside en esa área. Con toda la información catastral levantada fué creado un Sistema de Informaciones Geográficas. La actualización de este catastro permitió identificar, de forma más precisa, el número de casas en el barrio, pues el cálculo realizado anteriormente por el PMRR fué a partir del número de tejados vistos en las fotografías aéreas. Los resultados permitieron diseñar un nuevo zoneamiento de las categorías de riesgo en el área catastrada. La identificación de los domicilios más afectados y de las habitaciones que ya se derrumbaron. Los mapas que fueron generados y las informaciones vinculadas a estos, constituyen herramientas de gestión esenciales para la Defensa Civil de Maceió, para la identificación y prevención de riesgos, así como también para posteriores estudios direccionados a identificar soluciones para la contención de las laderas que presentan un riesgo más alto.

OBJETIVOS: Determinar a expressão básica dos transportadores ABC em uma linhagem celular do câncer epitelial de ovário, e investigar se o acetaminofen e o ibuprofeno em baixas concentrações são capazes de inibir o crescimento desta linhagem celular in vitro. MÉTODOS: A linhagem celular TOV-21 G foi exposta a diferentes concentrações de acetaminofen (1,5 a 15 µg/mL) e ibuprofeno (2,0 a 20 µg/mL), de 24 a 48 horas. O crescimento celular foi avaliado utilizando-se um ensaio de viabilidade celular. A morfologia celular foi determinada por meio da microscopia de fluorescência. O perfil de expressão gênica foi estabelecido por um painel de 42 genes da superfamília de transportadores ABC. RESULTADOS: Observou-se um decréscimo significativo no crescimento das células TOV-21 G expostas a 15 µg/mL de acetaminofen durante 24 (p=0,02) e 48 horas (p=0,01), ou a 20 µg/mL de ibuprofeno por 48 horas (p=0,04). Ao avaliar a morfologia das células cultivadas, não foi observada evidência de apoptose extensiva. A linhagem de células estudada subexpressa os genes de ABCA1, ABCC3, ABCC4, ABCD3, ABCD4 e ABCE1 na superfamília de transportadores ABC. CONCLUSÕES: Este estudo fornece evidências in vitro referentes aos efeitos inibidores do crescimento de concentrações terapêuticas do acetaminofen e ibuprofeno na linhagem celular testada. Além disso, as células TOV-21 G apresentaram uma expressão reduzida de genes dos transportadores ABCA1, ABCC3, ABCC4, ABCD3, ABCD4 e ABCE1.

PURPOSES: To determine the basic expression of ABC transporters in an epithelial ovarian cancer cell line, and to investigate whether low concentrations of acetaminophen and ibuprofen inhibited the growth of this cell line in vitro. METHODS: TOV-21 G cells were exposed to different concentrations of acetaminophen (1.5 to 15 μg/mL) and ibuprofen (2.0 to 20 μg/mL) for 24 to 48 hours. The cellular growth was assessed using a cell viability assay. Cellular morphology was determined by fluorescence microscopy. The gene expression profile of ABC transporters was determined by assessing a panel including 42 genes of the ABC transporter superfamily. RESULTS: We observed a significant decrease in TOV-21 G cell growth after exposure to 15 μg/mL of acetaminophen for 24 (p=0.02) and 48 hours (p=0.01), or to 20 μg/mL of ibuprofen for 48 hours (p=0.04). Assessing the morphology of TOV-21 G cells did not reveal evidence of extensive apoptosis. TOV-21 G cells had a reduced expression of the genes ABCA1, ABCC3, ABCC4, ABCD3, ABCD4 and ABCE1 within the ABC transporter superfamily. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides in vitro evidence of inhibitory effects of growth in therapeutic concentrations of acetaminophen and ibuprofen on TOV-21 G cells. Additionally, TOV-21 G cells presented a reduced expression of the ABCA1, ABCC3, ABCC4, ABCD3, ABCD4 and ABCE1 transporters.

Nas últimas décadas, a praia de Boa Viagem localizada no município de Recife-PE e de Piedade no município de Jaboatão dos Guararapes-PE vem sendo urbanizadas próximas à linha de costa provocando grandes transformações nas relações sociais, econômicas e morfológicas, onde problemas de erosão costeira são observados. O presente trabalho faz uso monitoramento da linha de costa utilizando o GNSS (global navigation satellite system) que oferece rapidez, repetibilidade e acurácia centimétrica para determinar e analisar os deslocamentos temporais da linha de costa assim como as taxas de deslocamento médias através do EPR (end point rate). Para isso, foram utilizados dados obtidos através de levantamentos geodésicos relativos cinemáticos para os anos de 2007, 2009, 2010 e 2012. Os resultados representam tendências setoriais através dos anos onde a maior taxa de recuo encontrada foi de 8,16 m/ano, encontrada no período de 2007-2009. Uma variedade de diferentes padrões sobre a linha de costa foram observados. Os resultados obtidos são considerados fundamentais para tomada de decisão em ambientes costeiros.

In recent decades, Boa Viagem beach located in the city of Recife-PE and Piedade in Jaboatão dos Guararapes-PE (Brazil) has seen urbanization near the coastline causing changes in social, economic and morphological aspects, where coastal erosion problems are observed. This study uses GNSS (global navigation satellite system) shoreline monitoring approach, which is quicker, and provides continuously updatable data at cm-level accuracy to analyze and determine temporal positional shifts of the shoreline as well as annual average rates through EPR (end point rate). To achieve this, kinematic GNSS survey data for the years 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012 were used. The results show sectorial trends over the years, with the highest annual retreat rate of 8.16 m /year occurring during the period 2007-2009. Variety of differents patterns over the shoreline was also observed. These findings could be essential for decision making in coastal environments.

O crescimento da urbanização vem provocando grandes transformações nas relações sociais e morfológica das áreas costeiras. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo modelar massa de dados de diversas fontes como GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) e sensoriamento remoto para posteriormente prover a espacialização da vulnerabilidade costeira à erosão utilizando a lógica fuzzy. O método aplicado para análise da vulnerabilidade utilizou variáveis linguísticas, partições fuzzy, intervalos e análises paramétricas que caracterizam a modelagem fuzzy. Após análise, os níveis de vulnerabilidade à erosão costeira ao longo da linha de costa nas cidades do Recife e Jaboatão dos Guararapes no litoral de Pernambuco apresentaram os seguintes resultados: 33,33% da linha de costa possuem vulnerabilidade baixa, 38,15% possui vulnerabilidade moderada, 14,26% vulnerabilidade alta e 14,26% muito alta.

The advance of urbanization has caused substantial transformations in the social and morphological aspects of coastal areas. The present study aims at modeling data from several sources, such as GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems), and remote sensing and subsequently to provide the spacialization of coastal vulnerability to erosion, by using fuzzy logic. In the applied method for vulnerability analysis, linguistic variables, fuzzy partitions, intervals and parametric analysis that characterize fuzzy modeling were used. After analyzing the levels of vulnerability to coastal erosion along the shoreline in the cities of Recife and Jaboatão dos Guararapes at the coast of Pernambuco, the following results were achieved: 33.33% of the coastline has low vulnerability while, 38.15% moderate vulnerability, 14.26% high vulnerability and, 14.26% very high vulnerability.

Part of the urban concentration at Recife municipality, capital of Pernambuco State, in Northeastern Brazil is inserted into the coastal zone. Recife according to the census data from 2010 has a population of 1.536.934 inhabitants, distributed in an area of approximately 220 km². This study aims to investigate the evolution of land use in an area located at Boa Viagem beach (Recife/Pernambuco/Brazil), where was realized a quantitative analysis of land use and urban zone evolution considering aspects of the years 1974, 2005, 2010 and 2011. For this purpose, were used satellite images of high spatial resolution, orthophotos and conducted a survey. The results are quantitative information that characterizes some temporal aspects of coastal zoning in Boa Viagem. Another important result was the identification of shading in a stretch of beach and the determination of shoreline position in the selected area and the comparison with the Coastal Management Act of Pernambuco State.

Parte da concentração urbana do Município de Recife, Capital do Estado de Pernambuco, na região Nordeste do Brasil, está inserida no litoral. A cidade do Recife conforme dados do censo de 2010, conta com uma população de 1.536.934 habitantes, distribuida numa área de aproximadamente 220 km². O presente trabalho tem como objetivo investigar a evolução do uso do solo numa área localizada na praia de Boa Viagem, onde foi realizada uma análise quantitativa da evolugáo urbana, considerando aspectos dos anos de 1974, 2005, 2010 e 2011. Para tanto, foram utilizadas imagens de alta resolução espacial, ortofotos e efetuado um levantamento topográfico. Os resultados obtidos são informações quantitativas que caracterizam aspectos temporais do zoneamento costeiro. Outro resultado importante foi a identificação do sombreamento num trecho da praia e a determinação da posição da linha de costa na área selecionada, sendo possível confrontá-la com a Lei de gerenciamento costeiro do Estado.

FUNDAMENTOS: A histopatologia e as respostas imunológicas do processo de cura da leishmaniose são ainda pouco estudadas. OBJETIVOS: Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os aspectos histopatológicos e imunológicos das lesões de pacientes com leishmaniose tegumentar, antes e após diferentes métodos terapêuticos. MÉTODOS: Foram estudados 23 indivíduos agrupados de acordo com os tratamentos: Glucantime, Glucantime + Leishvacin e Glucantime + Leishvacin associado com Bacilo Calmette-Guerin. Para a análise das alterações histopatológicas presentes na derme e epiderme, cortes histológicos foram corados com hematoxilina e eosina. Para avaliar a expressão de interferon (IFN)-γ, interleucina (IL) 12, IL-10 e IL-4 foi utilizada a técnica de imuno-histoquímica antes e após o tratamento. RESULTADOS: Antes do tratamento houve um intenso infiltrado de células mononucleares, após o tratamento, mesmo com um diagnóstico de cura clínica, apresentou-se ainda um moderado processo inflamatório. Na análise imuno-histoquímica, notamos uma diferença entre as citocinas, com expressão aumentada de citocinas IFN-γ e IL-12 em comparação com IL-10 e IL-4 tanto antes quanto depois do tratamento, e comparativamente, a diferença nesta expressão mostrou-se mais intensa antes do tratamento. No entanto, a expressão das citocinas analisadas por grupo de tratamento não mostraram diferenças estatisticamente significativas. CONCLUSÃO: Concluímos que uma cura clínica nem sempre coincide com a cura histopatológica, e que antes do tratamento há uma predominância de citocinas Th1. Para os tratamentos, não houve diferença na progressão da cura para todos os três tipos de tratamento, indicando a equivalência clínica dos tratamentos.

BACKGROUND: The histopathology and immune responses of the healing process of leishmaniasis are still poorly studied. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the histopathological and immunological aspects of lesions of patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis before and after different therapeutic methods. METHODS: We studied 23 individuals grouped according to the treatments: Glucantime, Glucantime + Leishvacin and Glucantime + Leishvacin associated with Bacillus Calmette-Guerin. For analysis of the histopathological changes present in the dermis and epidermis, histological sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The samples were immunostained before and after treatment to analyze the expression of interferon (IFN)-γ, interleukin (IL) 12, IL-10 and IL-4. RESULTS: Before treatment the presence of intense infiltrates of mononuclear cells was noticed and after treatment, even with a diagnosis of clinical cure, the subjects still showed a moderate inflammatory process. In the immunohistochemical analyses, we noticed a difference between the cytokines, with increased expression of cytokines IFN-γ and IL-12 compared to IL 10 and IL-4, both before and after treatment and, comparatively, the difference in this expression was more intense before treatment. However, the cytokine expression analyzed by treatment group showed no statistically significant difference. CONCLUSION: We conclude that a clinical cure does not always coincide with the histopathological one, and that before treatment there is a predominance of Th1 cytokines. In terms of treatment type, there was no difference in the progression of healing for all the three types of treatment, indicating their clinical equivalence.
