ABSTRACT With agricultural expansion in Amazonian regions, studies are needed to verify the effect of mechanization on the soils of the regions. This study aimed to assess soil physical attributes under different compaction conditions induced by tractor traffic on a soil of southern Amazonas State, Brazil. Treatments consisted of three compaction levels: conventional soil tillage without additional compaction (CT) and conventional soil tillage with additional compaction with four (CTc4) and eight tractor passes (CTc8). An intense increase in soil aggregate diameter was observed in the superficial soil layer (0.00-0.05 m) from four tractor passes, decreasing in the successive soil layers (0.05-0.20 m). Soil density increased up to a depth of 0.10 m. The reduced macroporosity and soil moisture on the soil surface (0.00-0.05 m) did not significantly alter soil microporosity in the different treatments. For the macroporosity, the 0.00-0.05 m layer was the most impaired, with a reduction of more than 50% for the treatments submitted to compaction (CTc4 and CTc8). The penetration resistance for the 0.00-0.05 m layer was increased by more than 150% between the treatment without compaction (CT = 0.88 MPa) and compaction (CTc4 = 2.25 MPa; CTc8 = 2.50 MPa). These results show a greater caution in the agricultural machinery management in Amazonian soils, which may be aggravated due to the intense water regime in the region.

Resumo O reconhecimento da influência das práticas de manejo nas condições físicas e químicas do solo é substancial para a agricultura sustentável. Por essa razão, o estudo foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar o comportamento de atributos do solo sob diferentes usos na região de Humaitá, AM, utilizando métodos estatísticos multivariados. O estudo foi desenvolvido em 8 propriedades rurais produtoras de banana, pastagem, milho, café, mandioca, hortaliças, sistema agroflorestal e fragmento florestal. Amostras de solos com estrutura preservada nas camadas de 0,0 - 0,10 e 0,10 - 0,20 m foram coletadas aleatoriamente em 5 pequenas trincheiras por área, totalizando 32 amostras nos sistemas de manejo, para determinar os atributos físicos e químicos. Os dados foram então submetidos à análise estatística univariada e multivariada. Análises exploratórias de dados (componentes principais e dendrogramas) e frequência de covariáveis ambientais foram eficientes em distinguir ambientes de produção, portanto a classificação multivariada baseada em atributos físicos e químicos do solo pode auxiliar no planejamento adequado do uso da terra. A análise dos componentes principais indica que a DS apresenta dependência direta com o RSP, sinalizando o uso do solo com pastagem o único no processo de compactação. A acidez do solo é o principal fator limitante para o desenvolvimento da cultura, exigindo a adoção de práticas corretivas de pH do solo com melhorias na oferta de nutrientes. A conversão da floresta para pastagem manteve a característica estrutural do solo, enquanto os demais usos incrementaram melhorias na qualidade física e fertilidade do solo.

Abstract The recognition of the influence of management practices on soil physical and chemical conditions is substantial for sustainable agriculture. For this reason, this study was developed for the purpose of evaluating the behavior of soil attributes under different uses in the region of Humaitá, AM, using multivariate statistical methods. The study was developed in 8 rural properties producing bananas, grassland, maize, coffee, cassava, vegetables, agroforestry system and a forest fragment. Samples of soils with preserved structure in the 0.0 - 0.10 and 0.10 - 0.20 m layers were randomly collected in 5 small trenches per area, totaling 32 samples in the management systems, to determine the physical and chemical attributes. The data were then submitted to univariate and multivariate statistical analysis. Exploratory data analysis (principal components and dendrogram) and frequency of environmental covariates was efficient in distinguishing production environments, so multivariate classification based on physical and chemical attributes of the soil can help in the proper planning of land use. The analysis of the principal components indicates that the BD presents direct dependence with the SPR, signaling the use of the soil with grassland the only one in the process of compaction. Soil acidity is the main limiting factor for crop development, requiring the adoption of pH corrective practices with improvements in nutrient supply. The conversion of the forest to grassland maintained the structural characteristics of the soil, while the other uses increased improvements in physical quality and soil fertility.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade do solo e sua relação com a produtividade de soja (Glycine max) em sistema de integração lavoura-pecuária (ILP), com consórcio entre gramíneas e leguminosas na fase pastagem. O experimento foi realizado no Estado de Mato Grosso, em um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico, em que gramíneas (Megathyrsus maximus 'BRS Tamani' e Urochloa brizantha 'BRS Piatã'), consorciadas com feijão-caupi (Vigna unguiculata 'BRS Tumucumaque') e feijão-guandu (Cajanus cajan 'BRS Mandarim'), foram cultivadas após a colheita da soja. Um delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso foi utilizado com três repetições, em arranjo de parcelas subdivididas, em que as gramíneas foram consideradas como parcelas, e as leguminosas, como subparcelas. Os consórcios com leguminosas proporcionaram incrementos dos estoques de C e N total. Os consórcios causaram o aumento de C e N da biomassa microbiana, enquanto os cultivos solteiros contribuíram para o estresse da microbiota do solo. A atividade da enzima urease foi sensível às alterações de manejo em curto prazo, porém a fosfatase ácida e a β-glucosidase foram indicadores pouco sensíveis. A qualidade do solo é elevada com os consórcios entre gramíneas e leguminosas, com efeitos positivos sobre a produtividade de grãos de soja.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the quality of the soil and its relation with soybean (Glycine max) yield in an integrated crop-livestock system (ICLS), with intercropping between grasses and legumes in the pasture phase. The experiment was carried out in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, on a dystrophic Oxisol, in which grasses (Megathyrsus maximus 'BRS Tamani' and Urochloa brizantha 'BRS Piatã'), intercropped with cowpea (Vigna unguiculata 'BRS Tumucumaque') and pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan 'BRS Mandarim'), were cultivated after soybean harvest. A randomized complete block design was used, with three replicates, in a split-plot arrangement, in which grasses were considered as plots, and legumes as subplots. Legume intercrops provided increases of C and total N stocks. The intercrops caused the increase of C and N of the microbial biomass, whereas the single cultures contributed to stress in the soil microbiota. The activity of the urease enzyme was sensitive to management changes in the short term, but acid phosphatase and β-glucosidase were poorly sensitive indicators. Soil quality is high with intercropping between grasses and legumes, with positive effects on soybean grain yield.

RESUMO A conversão da condição natural do solo para a agricultura, em destaque para a monocultura de cana-deaçúcar impõe alterações nos atributos do solo. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a variação do estoque de carbono de Latossolos com mata nativa, cana-de-açúcar e área reflorestada adjacentes, no município de Guariba - SP. Em cada área, foram coletadas, aleatoriamente, quatro amostras (compostas por quinze pontos), nas camadas de 0,0-0,10 e de 0,10-0,20 m. Foram avaliados os atributos densidade do solo, porosidade total, granulometria, teor de matéria orgânica, carbono orgânico total e estoque de carbono total no solo, de cada amostra nas duas profundidades estudadas. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância, correlação linear e análises multivariadas. Os resultados indicam que os teores de carbono são maiores nas camadas superficiais nas três áreas, decrescendo em profundidade. O solo da área de mata nativa apresenta o maior estoque de carbono, com 20,65 Mg ha-1, seguido pelo reflorestamento e cultivo de cana-de-açúcar, com 15,93 e 13,71 Mg ha-1, respectivamente, na profundidade de 0,0-0,10 m e 17,71 Mg ha-1, seguido pelo reflorestamento e cultivo de cana-de-açúcar, com 14,86 e 12,06 Mg ha-1, respectivamente, na profundidade de 0,10-0,20 m. Foi possível verificar tendo como referência a mata nativa, a perda de carbono no solo, sendo a área reflorestada e cultivada com cana-de-açúcar, na ordem de 22,9 e 33,6 %, na profundidade de 0,0-0,10 m e de 31,9 e 16,1 % nas áreas reflorestada e cultivada com cana-de-açúcar na profundidade de 0,10-0,20 m, respectivamente. Assim, conclui-se que intervenção humana através de práticas agropecuárias reduz o estoque de carbono no solo a patamares inferiores ao encontrado em condições de mata nativa.

ABSTRACT The natural condition conversion of the soil to agriculture, highlighting to the sugarcane monoculture, imposes changes in the soil attributes. This work aimed to evaluate the variation of the carbon storage of Oxisols under native forest, sugarcane, and adjacent reforested area, in Guariba, SP state. In each area, four samples (composed of fifteen points) were randomly collected, at 0.0-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m layers. We evaluated soil density, total porosity, grain size, organic matter content, total organic carbon, and total soil carbon storage of each sample, at 0.0-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m. Data were submitted to analysis of variance, linear correlation, and multivariate analyzes. The results indicate that the carbon content is higher in the superficial layers in all three areas, decreasing in depth. The soil of the native forest area has the highest carbon storage, 20.65 Mg ha-1, followed by reforestation and sugarcane cultivation areas, 15.93 and 13.71 Mg ha-1 respectively at 0.0-0.10 m, and 17.71 Mg ha-1, followed by reforestation and sugarcane cultivation areas, 14.86 and 12.06 Mg ha-1 respectively at 0.10 -0.20 m. It was possible to verify, comparing to the native forest, the loss of carbon in the soil, losses of 22.9 and 33.6% in the reforested and cultivated with sugar cane areas, at 0.0-0, 10 m, and 31.9 and 16.1% in the reforested and cultivated with sugarcane areas at 0.10-0.20 m, respectively. Thus, we may conclude that the human intervention through agricultural practices reduces the carbon storage in the soil at lower levels than the ones found in native forest conditions.

RESUMO Metais pesados são naturalmente encontrados em solos, mas suas concentrações podem ser aumentadas por meio de ações antrópicas. Objetivou-se determinar as concentrações de Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb e Zn em Latossolos Amarelos de áreas produtoras de olerícolas, bem como a influência do cultivo e da posição no relevo dos solos no acúmulo desses elementos. Amostras de solo foram coletadas em cinco propriedades e quatro áreas com vegetação natural, as quais serviram de referência. O solo foi coletado nos terços superior, médio e inferior da encosta, nas linhas de plantio, e no topo, nas áreas de mata, em três profundidades (0,0-0,10 m; 0,10-0,30 m; e 0,30-0,60 m). Os resultados das análises químicas demonstraram que as concentrações de Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb e Zn nos solos foram aumentadas pelo cultivo. Apenas Cd e Cu estiveram acima do valor de referência de qualidade para Pernambuco. As técnicas de análise multivariada utilizadas foram eficientes para separação dos ambientes e para diferenciação da origem dos metais. Os solos nas áreas de mata foram claramente separados das áreas de cultivo, demonstrando o efeito das práticas agrícolas sobre os teores dos metais nos solos. A análise de componentes principais indicou origem predominantemente antropogênica (adubação fosfatada) para Cd, nas amostras de solo mais superficiais.

ABSTRACT Heavy metals are naturally found in soils, but their levels may increase as a result of anthropogenic actions. This study aimed at determining the concentrations of Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in Yellow Latosol from vegetable crops areas, as well as the influence of the cultivation and position in the landscape on the accumulation of these elements. Soil samples were collected from five farming areas and four areas with natural vegetation, which served as a reference. Soil was collected along the planting rows from three transect positions (upper, middle and lower sections of the slope), as well as from the upper portion of forest areas, at three depths (0.0-0.10 m, 0.10-0.30 m and 0.30-0.60 m). The results from the chemical analyses indicated that Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn levels in the soil increased as a result of cultivation. Only Cd and Cu concentrations were above the quality reference values for the Pernambuco State. The multivariate analysis techniques used were efficient at separating the environments and at differentiating the origin of the metals. Soils from forest areas were clearly separated from croplands, demonstrating the effect of agricultural practices on the metal contents in the soils. The principal component analysis indicated a predominantly anthropogenic origin (phosphate fertilizing) for Cd, in more superficial soil samples.

Polímeros solúveis em água caracterizam-se como eficientes agentes floculantes relacionados aos seus aspectos moleculares, cuja aplicação em solos com horizontes que apresentam problemas estruturais, como acontece com o caráter coeso, favorece a melhoria da qualidade física e, assim, amplia a aptidão agrícola desses solos. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar a qualidade estrutural de solos com horizontes coesos dos Tabuleiros Costeiros de Pernambuco com a aplicação de Poliacrilamida (PAM) como condicionador químico. Para isso, foram avaliados três horizontes (um coeso e dois não coesos) de um Argissolo Amarelo e, para fins comparativos de horizontes coesos, foi selecionado o horizonte de um Latossolo Amarelo. Como tratamentos, foram aplicadas soluções aquosas de PAM (12,5; 50,0; e 100,0 mg kg-1) e água destilada (controle). Os aspectos estruturais dos horizontes foram avaliados pela estabilidade (massa de solo retida em cinco classes de diâmetro), distribuição de agregados por classe de tamanho (diâmetro médio ponderado - DMP, diâmetro médio geométrico - DMG) e magnitude das alterações promovidas pela PAM, medindo o índice de sensibilidade (Is). As soluções aquosas de PAM aumentaram a estabilidade de agregados na maior classe de diâmetro avaliada dos horizontes coesos e não coesos, repercutindo em maiores valores de DMP e DMG, com a solução de 100 mg kg-1 mais eficiente. O horizonte coeso Bt1, do Argissolo, evidenciou-se mais sensível à ação da PAM, onde foram encontrados maiores valores do Is; porém, o horizonte BA, do Latossolo, apresentou melhor qualidade estrutural inferida pela estabilidade e distribuição de tamanho de agregados.

Water-soluble polymers are characterized as effective flocculating agents due to their molecular features. Their application to soils with horizons with structural problems, e.g, a cohesive character, contributes to improvements in the physical quality and thus to the agricultural suitability of such soils. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the structural quality of soils with cohesive horizons of coastal tablelands in the State of Pernambuco treated with polyacrylamide (PAM) as chemical soil conditioner. To this end, three horizons (one cohesive and two non-cohesive) of a Yellow Argisol (Ultisol) were evaluated and to compare cohesive horizons, the horizon of a Yellow Latosol (Oxisol) was selected. The treatments consisted of aqueous PAM solutions (12.5; 50.0; 100.0 mg kg-1) and distilled water (control). The structural aspects of the horizons were evaluated by the stability (soil mass retained in five diameter classes), aggregate distribution per size class (mean weight diameter- MWD, geometric mean diameter - GMD) and the magnitude of the changes introduced by PAM by measuring the sensitivity index (Si). Aqueous PAM solutions increased aggregate stability in the largest evaluated diameter class of the cohesive and non-cohesive horizons, resulting in higher MWD and GMD, with highest efficiency of the 100 mg kg-1 solution. The cohesive horizon Bt1 in the Ultisol was most sensitive to the action of PAM, where highest Si values were found, but the structural quality of the BA horizon of the Oxisol was better in terms of stability and aggregate size distribution.
