No presente trabalho são relatados os resultados de um ensaio com soja (Glycine max (L.) Merril) instalado com a finalidade de estudar, em caráter preliminar, as reações da cultura aos tratamentos com adubos químicos, na presença e na ausência de calcário e o efeito residual dos fertilizantes. O ensaio foi conduzido em Campinas, na Estação Experimental "Dr. Theodureto de Camargo", do Instituto Agronômico, numa gleba de terra-roxa-misturada, e os resultados obtidos de três anos de experiência mostraram forte reação à aplicação de fósforo e à calagem. O fósforo e o calcário proporcionaram ainda efeito residual no ano agrícola 1958/59, como resultado da aplicação no ano anterior. Os resultodos obtidos confirmam a recomendação generalizada de efetuar, de preferência, a adubação mineral nas culturas anuais que precedem a soja num programa de rotação.

This paper reports the results obtained in an experiment on mineral fertilization for soybeans carried out to study crop responses and residual effect, with and without limestone. The trial was carried out at the Estação Experimental "Dr. Theodureto de Camargo", Campinas in a plot of "terra-roxa-misturada". All results refer to the period 1955/56 to 1957/58. Phosphorus induced the greatest yield response (49 % over the control) with significant differences. In presence of limestone, phosphorus showed 21 % increase over phosphorus with no limestone. Nitrogen and potash induced no significant responses. Residual effects were noted only for phosphorus and limestone in 1958/59, as a result from previous application. However, the results were not statistically significant for limestone. The results reported in this paper agree with those on which it is based the usual recomendation that mineral fertilizers for the soybean should preferably be applied to the crops that preceed this plant in a rotation program.

A fim de estudar o efeito do tratamento com "Arasan" sôbre a germinação das sementes de soja, e também de verificar a compatibilidade entre êsse tratamento e a inoculação das sementes com Rhisobium japonicum, foi instalada uma série de ensaios nas localidades de Campinas, Ribeirão Prêto e Pindorama, empregando as variedades Abura e Mogiana, esta apresentando o defeito de rachaduras ("cracking") na casca das sementes, enquanto a primeira é isenta dêsse defeito. Os resultados mostraram que houve aumento moderado na porcentagem de germinação de sementes, devido à aplicação de "Arasan". A inoculação com R. japonicum, na véspera do plantio, ocasionou aumento significativo do número de nódulos e da produção de grãos. Concluiu-se também que, sob as condições dos ensaios realizados, a aplicação de fungicida "Arasan" é compatível com a inoculação das sementes, uma vez que foram insignificantes as diferenças entre as produções dos tratamentos "Arasan + Inoculante" e "Inoculante".

Field tests were carried out at three different locations to study the compatibility of seed treatment with Arasan and inoculation with nodule bacteria, and to verify the influence of the fungicide treatment on the germination of two soybean varieties: Abura (with no cracking) and Mogiana (with 76% of cracking). The results of the tests showed that there was a slight increase in emergence due to Arasan. Inoculation of the seed just prior to planting increased significantly both the number of nodules and the yield. Under the conditions of the trials, treatment with Arasan did not impair the efficiency of inoculation, as judged by non-significant differences between the treatments, inoculation alone and inoculation plus Arasan.

This paper deals with the results of a pot and plot experiment which was carried out to determine the influence of sulphur and boron and the effect seed inoculation with Rhizobium meliloti in the yield of alfafa. Sulphur was applied as flower of sulphur at the rates of 1,000 and 2,000 kg por hectare; boron was employed in the proportion of 15 kg of borax per hectare; both sulphur and boron were distributed broadcast before planting; the experimental design chosen for the field trial was a latin square of 6 x 6 with the following treatments: Number Treatment 1 Control 2 One dosis S + inoculation 3 Two dosis S +inoculation 4 One dosis S + B + inoculation 5 B + inoculation 6 inoculation The crop supplied four cuttings in an eleven months period. The pot experiment nearly confirmed the plot one. The following conclusions can be drawn: 1. The classification of treatments in a decrescent order was: l.o - two doses S + inoculation; 2.o - one dosis S +inoculation, S + B + inoculation, and B + inoculation (these treatmente were not statistically different); 3.o - control; 4.o - inoculation; 2 The vield due to the treatment two dosis S + inoculation was 22 per cent higher than the control one, a fact that suggests that the S supply in the soil studied ("terra roxa misturada") is not sufficient for the total requirements of alfafa; 3. From an economical point of view the best treatment was: one dosis B + inoculation which permits a net gain of Cr$ 12.527,30 per hectare per year; 4. Based on the mentioned results we recommend in soils of same type the following fertilization for alfafa. 5 tons limestone/hectare 300 kg serranafosfato and 600 kg hiperfosfato/ha 300 kg muriate of potash/ha 15 kg borax/ha and a medium organic manuring if the soil is very poor in organic matter.

Soybean varieties cultivated at present in Brazil (Abura and Rio Grande), as well as some other promissing strains (455, Chosen, Georgian, Pereira Barreto, Arksoy, Acadian, etc.) have shown severe attacks by the rootknot nematodes. The study of the parasite showed that two forms are present, attacking the soybean roots, both being closely related to Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid & White, 1919) Chitwood, 1949. Variety N 46-2652, considered to be resistent in the Southern part of the United States, proved to be susceptible to the mentioned nematodes, according to results of two pot test, discussed in this paper. Palmeto, La 41-1219, N 45-3799 and Otootan varieties were considered resistent to these nematodes, judged by the results of one field trial here reported. The resistence of varieties Palmeto and La 41-1219 was also confirmed by two pot experiments in which artificial infestation by nematodes was produced.
