Abstract The biota of the humid mountain ranges of the Brazilian semiarid is still poorly understood. In order to fill this scientific gap, we carried out an extensive survey along altitudinal ranges (400m - 1,000 m) on both the windward and the leeward slopes of the Baturité Mountain Range, in the state of Ceará state. We registered 400 plant species and 92 families. The Myrtaceae (36 spp.), Fabaceae (25 spp.), Rubiaceae (20 spp.) and Bromeliaceae (15 spp.) families predominated on the windward slope; while Fabaceae (19 spp.), Myrtaceae (14 spp.) and Euphorbiaceae (11 spp.) were the most abundant on the leeward slope. As we expected, the species richness of trees, shrubs, subshrubs, epiphytes and terrestrial herbs was positively correlated with the altitude (R2 > 0.60). Above 800 m, we registered 273 species exclusive to the windward slope, 81 exclusive to the leeward slope, and 46 shared species. Therefore, management actions must consider the spatial heterogeneity, distribution and taxa richness.

A qualidade da água usada na irrigação é um fator decisivo para a produtividade dos cultivos e para a qualidade do solo no semiárido brasileiro. Foram avaliados os efeitos das concentrações salinas da água de duas fontes distintas (rio e poço raso) sobre os atributos físicos: argila dispersa em água, grau de floculação, densidade e porosidade do solo, estabilidade e diâmetro médio ponderado de agregados estáveis em água de um Neossolo Flúvico Ta eutrófico, cultivado com a bananeira Musa sp. cv. Pacovan, durante os anos 2000/2001. A densidade do solo, a argila dispersa em água e o grau de floculação mostraram-se sensíveis aos incrementos de sais no solo irrigado com água da fonte poço. Os movimentos de contração e expansão do solo estudado, muito provavelmente, influenciaram as variações observadas na macroporosidade e estabilidade de agregados, pois as concentrações salinas das águas das duas fontes não foram suficientemente altas para alterar esses atributos físicos. O curto espaço de tempo em que o solo foi submetido à ação de agentes salinizadores pode ter diminuído e, ou, mascarado os efeitos dos sais sobre os processos de floculação e dispersão.

The water quality used in irrigation is a decisive factor for crop productivity and soil quality in the Brazilian semiarid. The effects of the saline concentrations of two different water quality samples (river and shallow well resources) on the physical properties (clay dispersed in water, flocculation level, density, porosity, stability and mean weighted diameter of water-stable aggregates) were tested. The experiments were carried out in 2000/2001 on an Entisol under Musa sp. cv. Pacovan. The soil density, water-dispersed clay, and the flocculation level were sensitive to increments of salts in the well-irrigated treatment. The contraction and expansion of the studied soil possibly influenced the macroporosity and aggregate stability variations, since the saline concentrations from both sources were not high enough to alter these two physical properties. The effects of salts on the flocculation and dispersion processes may have been reduced or masked by the short time during which the soil was exposed to the salinization agents.

Duas fontes de água (rio e poço raso) foram testadas quanto à ação de seus sais sobre atributos hídricos de um Neossolo Flúvico textura franco-argilosa, durante o biênio 2000/2001. O experimento foi realizado numa área de 5.000 m² cultivada com a bananeira Musa sp cultivar pacovan, num esquema fatorial 2 x 3, com duas fontes d'água e três lâminas de irrigação (L1, L2 e L3), via microaspersão. Os resultados mostraram que as lâminas e a qualidade da água não tiveram efeitos significativos sobre a condutividade hidráulica. As curvas de retenção de água apresentaram variações nos valores de umidade retida abaixo da capacidade de campo durante o período de estiagem; no período chuvoso, foram observadas diferenças nas tensões acima da capacidade de campo. A predominância de argila e silte na fração textural, bem como os ciclos de expansão e contração do solo estudado, muito provavelmente, definiu a expressão dos atributos hídricos avaliados, uma vez que a concentração eletrolítica e a Relação de Adsorção de Sódio (RAS) do solo não atingiram valores suficientes para influir nas variáveis analisadas.

The influence of the salt content of two contrasting water sources (river and shallow well) on the hydraulic attributes of a clay loam Fluvic Inceptisol were tested. The experiment was carried out in 2000/2001 agricultural year on a 5,000 m² plantation of Musa sp banana, cultivar pacovan. It consisted of a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement of two water sources and three irrigation levels (L1, L2 and L3), applied via microsprinkling. Results showed that the different irrigation levels and water quality did not influence the hydraulic conductivity significantly. Soil water retention curves presented variations in the moisture content retained below field capacity during the dry season, while differences were observed in the tensions above field capacity during the rainy season. The predominance of silt and clay combined with the expansion and contraction cycles of the investigated soil probably determined the expression of the evaluated hydraulic properties since the levels of the electrolyte concentration and the soil Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR) were not high enough to influence the analyzed variables.
