This study aimed to evaluate the effect of licuri (Syagrus coronate) cake (LC) on the chemical composition, cholesterol content, and fatty acid profile of meat from cull cows finished in a high-grain feedlot. We used 40 Zebu cull cows of 108 months of age and with an initial weight of 318 ± 38.17 kg. The animals were distributed into four treatments in a completely randomized design: control (0 g/kg LC), 50, 100, and 150 g/kg LC in the total dry matter of the total diet, and were confined for 105 d. The inclusion of LC influenced the content of total lipids and total cholesterol of the beef. The inclusion of LC influenced the concentrations of fatty acids (C12:0, C14:0, C14:1, C16:0, and C17:1) in the meat of cull cows. There was an effect of the inclusion of LC on the fatty acids C18:2n6t, C18:2n6, and C18:3n3 of the meat of cull cows finished in the feedlot. The inclusion of up to 50 g/kg LC in the diet of cows provided lower values for the sum (Σ) of saturated fatty acids and higher values for Σ monounsaturated fatty acids in the meat. The Σ polyunsaturated fatty acids decreased with the inclusion of LC in the diet. We recommend using up to 50 g/kg of licuri cake inclusion in the diet of cull cows finished in the feedlot.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of replacing grain sorghum (GS) with palm kernel cake (PKC) on the performance, carcass traits and meat quality of feedlot steers fed high-grain diets. Forty male ¹/4 Holstein * ¹/4 Nellore steers with an initial weight of 331.1 ± 36.2 kg, at 24 ± 2 months of age, were housed in group stalls (10 cattle/stall) where they received diets containing 0, 80, 160, or 240 g/kg PKC on a dietary dry matter basis. After 126 days, the animals were slaughtered and their carcass and meat evaluated. The replacement of GS with PKC did not influence empty body weight, carcass weight, carcass length, or carcass yield. However, the thickness of subcutaneous fat in the carcass decreased with the replacement of GS with PKC. The meat pH increased linearly, whereas there were no changes in cooking loss, shear force, lightness (L*), and fat or cholesterol contents in the meat of the steers. Partial replacement (41,57%) of GS with PKC is recommended, with an inclusion of up to 240 g/kg PKC in high-grain diets for steers.

A high-grain diet is essential to maximize growth and yield as well as to provide high-quality meat in beef cattle. This study evaluated the effects of including licuri cake in high-grain diets for steers on performance and carcass and meat quality. Forty-four crossbred (1/2 Bos taurus χ 1/2 Bos indicus) castrated steers at 24 months of age, with an initial weight of 358.19 ± 41.57 kg, were used. The animals were distributed into four treatments that consisted of diets including licuri cake (0, 85, 170, or 255 g/kg, dry matter basis). Dry matter intake and digestibility decreased with the inclusion of licuri cake in the diet. However, the addition of the ingredient did not influence the intakes of total digestible nutrients (6.7 ± 0.5 kg/day) or crude protein. Licuri cake inclusion did not influence weight gain (1.5 ± 0.2 kg/day) or hot carcass weight (255.1 ± 24.9 kg). There was also no effect on carcass fat thickness, whereas the cholesterol content in the meat decreased with the addition of the cake. We recommend the inclusion of up to 255 g/kg licuri cake in the diet of feedlot steers fed high-concentrate diets.

Resumo Com o objetivo de avaliar se as cianotoxinas (microcistinas) podem afetar a composição da comunidade zooplanctônica, levando à dominância de formas microzooplanctônicas (protozoários e rotiferos), as variações nas concentrações de microcistina e a biomassa do zooplâncton foram analisadas em três reservatórios eutróficos na região semi-árida do nordeste brasileiro. A concentração de microcistinas na água esteve correlacionada com o biovolume de cianobactérias, indicando a contribuição de formas coloniais como Microcystis na produção de cianotoxinas. A nível de comunidade, a biomassa total do zooplâncton não apresentou correlacão com a concentração de microcistina (r2 = 0.00; P > 0.001), mas em uma análise a nível de populações, a biomassa de rotíferos e cladóceros apresentou uma fraca correlação positiva. Copépodos Cyclopoida, os quais são considerados relativamente ineficientes na ingestão de cianobactérias, estiveram negativamente correlacionados com a concentração de microcistinas (r2 = - 0.01; P > 0.01). Surpreendentemente, a biomassa de copépodos Calanoida foi positivamente correlacionada com a concentração de cianotoxinas (r2 = 0.44; P > 0.001). Os resultados indicam que mecanismos de controle alelopáticos (efeitos negativos da microcistina sobre o zooplâncton) parecem não afetar substancialmente a composição do mesozooplâncton, que apresentou uma alta e constante biomassa, quando comparada à biomassa do microzooplâncton (rotíferos). Esses resultados podem ser importantes para um melhor entendimento das interações tróficas entre o zooplâncton e cianobactérias, e do efeito potencial de compostos alelopáticos sobre o zooplâncton.

Abstract The aim of our study was to assess whether cyanotoxins (microcystins) can affect the composition of the zooplankton community, leading to domination of microzooplankton forms (protozoans and rotifers). Temporal variations in concentrations of microcystins and zooplankton biomass were analyzed in three eutrophic reservoirs in the semi-arid northeast region of Brazil. The concentration of microcystins in water proved to be correlated with the cyanobacterial biovolume, indicating the contributions from colonial forms such as Microcystis in the production of cyanotoxins. At the community level, the total biomass of zooplankton was not correlated with the concentration of microcystin (r2 = 0.00; P > 0.001), but in a population-level analysis, the biomass of rotifers and cladocerans showed a weak positive correlation. Cyclopoid copepods, which are considered to be relatively inefficient in ingesting cyanobacteria, were negatively correlated (r2 = – 0.01; P > 0.01) with the concentration of cyanotoxins. Surprisingly, the biomass of calanoid copepods was positively correlated with the microcystin concentration (r2 = 0.44; P > 0.001). The results indicate that allelopathic control mechanisms (negative effects of microcystin on zooplankton biomass) do not seem to substantially affect the composition of mesozooplankton, which showed a constant and high biomass compared to the microzooplankton (rotifers). These results may be important to better understand the trophic interactions between zooplankton and cyanobacteria and the potential effects of allelopathic compounds on zooplankton.

A Hemocromatose Hereditária (HH) é a doença familiar mais frequente nos descendentes do norte da Europa da raça caucasiana caracterizada por sobrecarga de ferro predominantemente no fígado, mas também noutros órgãos, causando a sua disfunção. Tem manifestações clínicas tão variadas como a cirrose hepática, a diabetes mellitus, a tonalidade bronzeada da pele, a artropatia e a disfunção do miocárdio. Os autores apresentam o caso de um doente com HH, com particular relevo para as várias manifestações clínicas que surgem durante a evolução da doença e fazem a sua discussão. Apontam os principais factores limitadores do prognóstico e da qualidade de vida. Destacam o longo tempo de evolução, dado que o doente se apresentou com cirrose há 25 anos, que atribuem à abstinência alcoólica e ao tratamento intensivo com flebotomias. Reforçam a importância do diagnóstico precoce.

Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is a common genetic disease in Caucasians, characterized by iron overload and resulting in damage of the liver and other organs. It has protean manifestations ranging from liver cirrhosis to diabetes mellitus, skin pigmentation, arthropathy and cardiac disease. The authors report the case of an HH patient focusing the discussion on the several clinical features arising along the years. The main factors limiting prognosis and patient wellbeing are identified. The long evolution of the disease is emphasised, since the patient presented with liver cirrhosis 25 years ago, this long survival is probably due to alcohol abstention and intensive phlebotomies. The relevance of early diagnosis is underlined.

Fatores como a distribuição granulométrica e a morfologia condicionam as propriedades físicas de sistemas particulados (e.g. misturas de pós, pastas, concretos refratários), entre as quais a densidade de empacotamento. Podem ser encontrados, na literatura, vários modelos para a otimização da distribuição de tamanhos de partículas que maximiza o empacotamento, todos desenvolvidos para sistemas de esferas perfeitas (e.g. Furnas, Andreasen, Alfred). Neste trabalho, pós de alumina comercial (reativa e tabular) foram separados em nove frações granulométricas e, recorrendo a dois procedimentos distintos, construíram-se seis sistemas ternários diferentes e complementares de tamanhos de partículas. Usando a metodologia das superfícies de resposta e técnicas de análise estatística afins (programa de cálculo Statistica) obteve-se, em ambos os casos, a distribuição granulométrica que maximiza a densidade de empacotamento. Por comparação com as distribuições granulométricas teóricas, ficou demonstrada a validade do modelo teórico de Alfred para esferas perfeitas. Os resultados obtidos demonstram, assim, que o efeito prejudicial da não esfericidade das partículas pode ser, na realidade, compensado pela otimização da distribuição granulométrica global.

Particle size distribution and morphology are among the factors that affect the physical properties of particulate systems (e.g. powder mixtures, pastes, castable refractories). One such property is packing density. There are, in the literature, models that optimise particle size distributions for maximum packing density, all of them derived for spherical particles (e.g. Furnas, Andreasen, Alfred). In this work, commercial alumina powders (reactive and tabular) were divided into nine particle size classes. Following two different approaches, the latter were used to build six different ternary systems of complementary particle sizes. Using the response surface methodology and related statistical techniques (software Statistica), the particle size distribution that maximises the packing density was obtained in both cases and, by comparison with theoretical particle size distributions, the validity of Alfred's theoretical model for perfect spheres was demonstrated. These results clearly show that the harmful effect of the non-spherical shape of real particles can, in fact, be compensated by the optimization of the overall particle size distribution.

O incremento da produtividade das pastagens tem sido associado ao comportamento à compressão dos solos. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram: quantificar as curvas de compressão e a pressão de preconsolidação em sistemas de pastejo intensivo rotacionado irrigado e não irrigado. Foram coletadas 96 amostras indeformadas de solo em quatro ciclos sucessivos de pastejo instalado com capim Tanzânia (Panicum maximum Jacq.) em um Argissolo Vermelho. Após saturadas com água e equilibradas no potencial (psi): -10 kPa, as amostras foram pesadas e submetidas ao ensaio de compressão uniaxial com a aplicação sucessiva e contínua de pressões de 25, 50, 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1.000, 1.300 e 1.600 kPa. Os resultados comprovaram a hipótese de que houve diferença na compressibilidade do solo sob os sistemas de pastejo rotacionado intensivo irrigado e não irrigado. A maior compactação inicial verificada no sistema de pastejo rotacionado intensivo irrigado favoreceu o deslocamento das curvas de compressão uniaxial para valores superiores de densidade do solo. A pressão de preconsolidação foi significativamente superior no quarto ciclo de pastejo no sistema de pastejo rotacionado intensivo irrigado em relação ao sistema pastejo rotacionado intensivo não irrigado.

Increment in pasture productivity has been associated with the understanding of the soil behavior under compression. The objective of this research was to quantify (a) the compression curves and (b) the preconsolidation pressure of the soils under non-irrigated and irrigated short duration grazing systems. Ninety-six undisturbed soil samples were taken from the four successive pasture cycles of Tanzania grass (Panicum maximum Jacq.) in a Hapludalf. The samples were saturated in water and equilibrated at the matrix potential (psi): -10 kPa and then were weighed and submitted to an uniaxial compression test, applying the following pressures: 25, 50, 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1,000, 1,300, and 1,600 kPa. Results support the hypothesis that there is a difference between the soil compressibility under non-irrigated and irrigated short-duration grazing systems. The higher initial compaction verified in irrigated short-duration grazing system favored the displacement of the uniaxial compression curves for higher bulk density values. The preconsolidation pressure was significantly higher in the fourth pasture cycle under irrigated than under the non-irrigated short duration grazing system.

Dada a grande importância dos solos coesos derivados de sedimentos da Formação Barreiras e sua extensa área ocupada no Nordeste brasileiro, este trabalho teve como objetivo identificar e caracterizar a ocorrência de solos coesos nos tabuleiros costeiros no estado do Ceará. O estudo foi realizado em três perfis de solos, sendo dois Argissolos coesos e um Argissolo não-coeso, nos quais foram observadas as características morfológicas e determinadas as propriedades físicas, químicas e mineralógicas para a identificação e comprovação do(s) horizonte(s) coeso(s). Os resultados comprovaram a hipótese de ocorrência de solos coesos no estado do Ceará e a semelhança destes com solos coesos estudados em outros estados brasileiros. A RP foi o indicador mais sensível da coesividade do solo.

Given the importance of cohesive soils derived from sediments of the Barreiras Formation, and the extensive area occupied by them in northeastern Brazil, the objective of this study was to identify and characterize the occurrence of cohesive soils in Coastal Plains of Ceara State. Three soil profiles were studied: two cohesive Argisols and one non-cohesive Argisol. Their morphological characteristics and physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties were assessed to confirm the presence of cohesive horizons. The results validated the hypothesis of occurrence of cohesive soils in Ceara State and the similarities of these with cohesive soils studied in other Brazilian states. The PR was the most sensitive indicator of soil cohesiveness.

A heterogeneidade na compactação do solo, provocada por diferentes intensidades de tráfego, pode limitar a produção em áreas citrícolas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar o índice de compressão (IC) e a pressão de preconsolidação (sigmap) nas posições de amostragem: linha de plantio, entre rodado, rodado e projeção da copa, para avaliar a heterogeneidade da compactação de um Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo distrófico sob pomar de laranja. A amostragem foi realizada em 40 pontos, distribuídos aleatoriamente (10 em cada posição). Após saturadas com água e equilibradas no potencial (psi): -10 kPa, as amostras foram pesadas e submetidas ao ensaio de compressão uniaxial com a aplicação sucessiva e contínua de pressões de 25, 50, 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1.000, 1.300 e 1.600 kPa. Os resultados indicaram que a pressão de preconsolidação mostrou-se mais sensível do que o índice de compressão na avaliação da heterogeneidade da compactação do solo em áreas citrícolas. A compactação do solo aumentou no sentido das posições de amostragem: linha de plantio, entre rodado, rodado das máquinas e implementos agrícolas e projeção da copa das plantas cítricas.

The heterogeneity in soil compaction induced by different traffic intensities can reduce the productivity of citrus trees. The objective of this research was to quantify the compression index (CI) and the preconsolidation pressure (sigmap) in different sampling positions (row, between wheel track, wheel track, and canopy projection) to evaluate the compaction heterogeneity in a Haplustox under an orange orchard. The sampling was carried out at forty randomly distributed sites (ten samples in each position). The samples were water saturated and equilibrated at a water potential (psi) of -10 kPa. Thereafter, they were weighed and submitted to a uniaxial compression test under the following pressures: 25, 50, 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1,000, 1,300, and 1,600 kPa. The results indicated that the sigmap was the most sensitive indicator to evaluate the compaction heterogeneity induced by the traffic of agricultural machinery in areas cultivated with citrus trees. Soil compaction increased in the following order: row, between wheel tracks, at the wheel track, and canopy projection position.

A qualidade física do solo sob sistemas de pastejo contínuo e rotacionado foi avaliada pelo Intervalo Hídrico Ótimo (IHO). A amostragem foi realizada na área experimental da Embrapa Gado de Corte. Foi estudado um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico. Foram avaliados quatro piquetes, sendo dois no sistema de pastejo contínuo e dois no sistema de pastejo rotacionado. No sistema de pastejo contínuo, implementado com a espécie Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk, foram retiradas 30 amostras por piquete, não tendo um dos piquetes recebido adubação de manutenção (Cs), enquanto o outro havia recebido adubação bianual de manutenção (Cc). No sistema de pastejo rotacionado, implementado com a espécie Panicum maximum cv. Tanzânia, foram retiradas 30 amostras por piquete; em um dos piquetes, o resíduo pós-pastejo era mantido entre 2,0 e 2,5 t ha-1 de matéria seca total (MST) (R1), enquanto no outro era mantido entre 3,0 e 3,5 t ha-1 MST (R2). As amostras foram submetidas a um gradiente de tensão de água e, posteriormente, utilizadas nas determinações da densidade do solo (Ds), resistência do solo à penetração (RP), umidade volumétrica (tetav) e do IHO. O sistema de pastejo rotacionado apresentou piores condições físicas do solo para o crescimento vegetal, avaliadas pelo critério do IHO. Os maiores valores de Ds e menor IHO foram observados no R1, o que foi atribuído às taxas de lotação mais elevadas aplicadas neste piquete.

Soil physical quality in continuous and short-duration rotational cattle grazing systems was evaluated using the Least Limiting Water Range (LLWR) approach. Soil samples were collected on an experimental site at the Embrapa - Beef Cattle Research Center (Campo Grande, MS, Brazil). The studied soil was a Typic Acrudox. Four sampling sites were selected: two under a short-duration continuous grazing system and two under intensive short-duration rotational grazing system. Thirty soil cores were collected in each site under the continuous grazing system, planted with Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk grass. One of the continuous grazing sites had received biannual fertilization (Cc) while the other had not been fertilized (Cs). Thirty soil cores were also collected in each site under the intensive rotational grazing system, planted with Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania grass. In the intensive rotational grazing system the two sites differed in relation to the post-graze residue level left. In one site (R1) it varied from 2.0 to 2.5 t total dry matter (TDM) ha-1 and in the other R2 it varied from 3.0 to 3.5 t TDM ha-1. The cores were subjected to a soil water suction gradient, and then used for soil bulk density (Db), soil resistance to penetration (SR), volumetric water content (thetav), and LLWR determinations. The intensive short-duration rotational grazing system presented the worse physical soil conditions for plant growth, as evaluated by the LLWR. The highest Db and the lowest LLWR were found in R1, which could be a consequence of the heavier stocking rates used on this site.

A compreensão e a quantificação do impacto do uso e manejo na qualidade física dos solos são fundamentais no desenvolvimento de sistemas agrícolas sustentáveis. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar algumas propriedades indicadoras da qualidade física de um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico da região Noroeste do Paraná, cultivado e sob mata nativa. Foram coletadas 24 amostras de solo com estrutura não deformada, na profundidade de 0-0,20 m, em duas áreas contíguas, sob mata nativa e cultivado, localizadas na Fazenda Experimental da Universidade Estadual de Maringá, município de Maringá, PR. A área cultivada tem sido utilizada com culturas anuais, com preparo convencional do solo (arado de discos e grade niveladora). A área sob mata nativa é classificada como Floresta Estacional semidecidual. Avaliaram-se a porosidade, a densidade do solo, a curva de retenção de água do solo, a curva de resistência do solo à penetração e o intervalo hídrico ótimo. Os resultados indicaram valores significativamente maiores de densidade do solo e menores de macroporosidade e porosidade total na área cultivada. Não foi constatado efeito significativo do uso do solo na curva de retenção de água, apesar de ter sido ela influenciada pela densidade do solo. A curva de resistência foi significativamente influenciada pelo uso do solo, evidenciada pelos maiores valores de resistência à penetração com o secamento do solo na área cultivada. O intervalo hídrico ótimo (IHO) foi menor no solo cultivado, uma vez que a resistência à penetração e a porosidade de aeração determinaram os limites, inferior e superior, de água disponível com o aumento da densidade do solo. No solo sob mata nativa, o IHO foi igual à água disponível determinada pela capacidade de campo e pelo ponto de murcha permanente. A compactação do solo na área cultivada resultou em mudanças no sistema poroso, as quais foram descritas pelos menores valores do IHO na área cultivada.

The understanding and quantification of the impact caused by soil use and management on the physical soil quality are fundamental for the development of sustainable agricultural systems. The objective of this research was to quantify some physical soil properties to evaluate the physical quality of a dystrophic Red Latosol (Rhodic Ferralsol) in the northwest of the State of Paraná, Brazil. Undisturbed soil samples were collected from two contiguous areas on an Experimental Farm of the State University of Maringá. One area was cultivated with annual crops under conventional tillage (disk plow and harrowing) and the other under native forest (semidecidual seasonal forest). The evaluated physical soil attributes were soil porosity and bulk density, soil water retention curve, soil resistance curve, and the least limiting water range. Results indicated significantly higher values of bulk density and lower values of soil porosity in the cultivated area. The soil water retention curve was not influenced by the soil use system, but was negatively influenced by bulk density. The soil resistance curve was influenced by the soil use system, evidenced by high values of soil resistance to root penetration under increasing drought in the cultivated soil. The least limiting water range was significantly smaller in the cultivated soil owing to the soil resistance to root penetration and air-filled porosity, which determined the lower and upper limits of soil water availability with bulk density increase. In the soil under native forest, the least limiting water range was equal to the water availability determined by the field capacity and the permanent wilting point. Soil compaction in the cultivated soil induced changes in the soil porous system, which were described by lower values of the least limiting water range than in virgin soil.

Relações funcionais entre atributos dos solos podem ser utilizadas para associar certas propriedades físicas com características desses solos. Este trabalho teve como objetivo determinar as relações entre algumas propriedades físicas dos solos, especificamente densidade do solo (Ds), densidade de partículas (Dp) e capacidade de campo (θCC), ponto de murcha permanente (θPMP) e água disponível (θAD) e atributos rotineiramente determinados em levantamentos pedológicos. No estudo, foram utilizados 18 perfis representativos dos solos ocorrentes nos estados do Rio Grande do Sul e Santa Catarina, região Sul do Brasil. Foram coletadas amostras deformadas e indeformadas nos horizontes A e B para a determinação de Ds, Dp, θCC, θPMP e θAD, granulometria, matéria orgânica, óxidos de ferro e alumínio. As relações obtidas (regressões múltiplas) demonstraram que Ds, Dp, θCC, θPMP e θAD foram influenciadas por um número reduzido de características dos solos, especificamente teores de argila, silte e teor de óxidos de ferro e alumínio. Esses resultados preliminares podem servir para nortear o desenvolvimento de funções de pedotransferência para a região Sul do Brasil.

Functional relations between soil attributes may be used to associate different physical soil properties with soil characteristics. The objective of this work was to determine the relationships between some soil physical properties, namely bulk density (BD), particle density (PD), field capacity (θFC), permanent wilting point (θPWP) and available water capacity(θAD) with soil attributes measured in routine soil surveys. Eighteen representative soil profiles from Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina State, Southern Brazil, were used in this study. Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected from A and B horizons to quantify BD, PD, θFC, θPWP and θAD, particle size, organic matter, iron, and aluminum oxides. Multiple regressions demonstrated that BD, PD, θFC, θPWP and θAD were related with some soil characteristics, chiefly clay, silt and iron oxide contents. These preliminary results may help direct further studies on pedotransfer functions for Southern Brazil.
