Cártamo pode ser uma alternativa para o mercado de flores, podendo ser comercializada como flor fresca ou seca. A estimativa da taxa de aparecimento de folhas (LAR) e do filocrono (tempo necessário para o aparecimento de folhas sucessivas) é importante no cálculo do número de folhas emergidas (NL) na planta, o qual é uma excelente medida de tempo vegetal. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar a taxa de aparecimento de folhas e o filocrono em cártamo (Carthamus tinctorius L.). Foi realizado um experimento em Santa Maria, RS, em estufa plástica de 8 x 15m. A semeadura foi em 03 de outubro de 2003 e a emergência foi em 08 de outubro de 2003. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso com três repetições. O NL na haste principal foi medido durante o período de 24 de outubro a 15 de novembro de 2003. Foi calculado o número de graus dia diário acima de uma temperatura base (5°C) e a soma térmica acumulada (TT). Foi realizada uma análise de regressão linear entre NL e TT. O coeficiente angular da regressão linear é a LAR (folhas/ °C dia) e o filocrono (°C dia/folha) foi estimado pelo inverso do coeficiente angular da regressão linear. A LAR foi 0,0467 ± 0,0203 folhas/ °C dia e o filocrono foi 25,5 ± 14,6 °C dia/folha.

Safflower may be an interesting option for the flower market, either as fresh or dried cut flower. Estimating the leaf appearance rate and the phyllochron (the time interval between the appearance of successive leaves) is important for calculating the number of emerged leaves (NL) on the plant, which is an excellent measure of plant development. The objective of this study was to estimate the leaf appearance rate and the phyllochron in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.). An experiment was conducted in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, inside an 8 x 15m plastic greenhouse. Sowing was on 03 October 2003 and emergence was on 08 October 2003. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. The main stem NL was measured twice a week from 24 October 2003 to 15 November 2003 in four plants per replication. Daily growing degree days above a base temperature (5°C) and accumulated thermal time (TT) were calculated. The NL was linearly regressed against TT. The angular coefficient of the linear regression is the LAR (leaves/ °C day) and the phyllochron (°C days/leaf) was estimated by the inverse of the angular coefficient of the linear regression. The LAR was 0.0467 ± 0.0203 leaves/ °C day and the phyllochron was 25.5 ± 14.6°C days/leaf.

A vernalização é um processo que certas espécies de plantas, incluindo lírios (Lilium spp.), necessitam para entrar no período reprodutivo, por meio da exposição a baixas temperatures. Avaliou-se uma função não linear de resposta a vernalização para o lírio a -0,5; 4,0 e 10,0 ºC durante dois, quatro, seis e oito semanas. Dados de duração do subperíodo compreendido do plantio dos bulbos até o aparecimento do botão das plantas com lírio, cultivar "Snow Queen", provenientes de um experimento realizado em Santa Maria, RS, Brasil, foram usados como dados independentes para testar a função não linear de vernalização. Plantas de lírio não foram vernalizadas com menos de oito dias efetivos de vernalização enquanto que as plantas estavam completamente vernalizadas com 40 ou mais dias efetivos de vernalização. A função geral não linear de vernalização descreveu bem a resposta de desenvolvimento à vernalização com uma raiz quadrada média do erro de 0,178.

Vernalization is a process required by certain plant species, including lilies (Lilium spp.), to enter the reproductive phase, through an exposure to low, non-freezing temperatures. The objective of this study was to evaluate a nonlinear vernalization response function for the "Snow Queen" lily. An experiment was carried out in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, to provide an independent data set to evaluate the performance of the model. Lily bulbs were vernalized at -0.5, 4.0, and 10ºC during two, four, six, and eight weeks. The daily vernalization rate (fvn) for each treatment was calculated with a beta function, and the effective vernalization days (VD) were calculated by accumulating fvn. The thermal time from plant emergence to visible buds at different VD treatments was used as the observed response to VD. Lily plants were not vernalized at values less than eight effective vernalization days and were fully vernalized at values greater than 40 days. The generalized nonlinear vernalization function described well the "Snow Queen" lily developmental response to VD, with a root mean square error of 0.178.

O experimento foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de estudar o efeito da vernalização sobre o filocrono (intervalo de tempo entre o aparecimento de duas folhas sucessivas) em lírio (Lilium longiflorum Thunb.), cv. Snow Queen, no campo experimental do Departamento de Fitotecnia da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM), Santa Maria (RS). Os tratamentos constituíram-se de bulbos submetidos a -0,5 ºC; 4 ºC e 10 ºC com períodos de vernalização dos bulbos de 2, 4, 6 e 8 semanas. O tratamento testemunha correspondeu a bulbos não vernalizados. Após o tratamento de vernalização, os bulbos foram plantados no interior de uma estufa plástica em 5 de dezembro de 2002 e observado o desenvolvimento das plantas. O filocrono foi estimado pelo inverso do coeficiente angular da regressão linear entre o número de folhas e o acúmulo térmico acima de 1 ºC, a partir da emergência das plantas. Os resultados evidenciaram que o estado de vernalização da planta afeta o filocrono em lírio, e plantas não vernalizadas ou com pouca vernalização têm um filocrono mais elevado do que plantas completamente vernalizadas. Quando o tratamento de vernalização é maior que 30 dias efetivos de vernalização, o valor do filocrono foi em torno de 25 ºC dia/folha, valor que pode ser utilizado como referência quando os bulbos são vernalizados e utilizados em plantios comerciais.

An experiment was carried out to verify the effect of vernalization period on the phyllochron (time interval between the appearance of two successive leaves) in lily (Lilium longiflorum Thunb), cv. 'Snow Queen'. The trial was conducted at Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. Treatments were bulbs stored at vernalizing temperatures of -0.5, 4, and 10ºC during periods of 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks. Control treatment was unvernalized bulbs. Bulbs were planted inside a plastic greenhouse on December 05, 2002, and crop development was evaluated throughout the growing season. Phyllochron for each treatment was estimated as the inverse of the slope of the linear regression relating leaf number and accumulated thermal time above 1ºC after emergence. Results showed that the phyllochron is affected by vernalization. Unvernalized plants and plants with low vernalization treatments had greater phyllochron values compared to completely vernalized plants. Plants vernalized with 30 or higher effective vernalization days had a phyllochron value around 25 ºC days/leaf. This phyllochron can be used as a reference when vernalized bulbs are used in commercial croppings.

Com o objetivo de avaliar a resposta dos dias efetivos de vernalização do lírio sobre o conteúdo de açúcares solúveis e nitrogênio total e a emergência de plantas, bulbos de Lilium longiflorum, cv ‘Snow Queen’ foram submetidos a diferentes temperaturas de vernalização e períodos de exposição à temperaturas vernalizantes e cultivados em estufa plástica. O experimento foi conduzido na Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Santa Maria (RS), em duas épocas de plantio dos bulbos: de 20/03/02 a 05/11/02 e 05/12/02 a 15/05/03. Os tratamentos foram 0, 9, 11, 14, 19, 23, 28, 29, 34, 38, 42, 45 e 56 dias efetivos de vernalização (DV), calculados a partir de uma função beta de resposta da vernalização à temperatura. Determinaram-se o conteúdo de açúcares solúveis e nitrogênio total e a duração do subperíodo de plantio dos bulbos-emergência das plantas (P-E). A vernalização promoveu a mobilização de reservas de açúcares e nitrogênio, o que é importante para nutrição da planta em emergência. O aumento do número de dias efetivos de vernalização reduziu a duração do subperíodo P-E. Bulbos tratados em temperaturas de 10ºC por 6 e 8 semanas de armazenamento (34 e 45DV), apresentaram uma menor duração do subperíodo P-E.

In order to evaluate the response of effective vernalization days on the soluble sugar and total nitrogen contents and the emergence of Lilium longiflorum plant shoots, cv ‘Snow Queen’ bulbs were kept under different vernalization temperatures and periods of treatment under vernalizing temperatures, and cultivated in a plastic greenhouse after the vernalization. The experiment was carried out at the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, RS, in two seasons: from 03/20/02 to 11/05/02 and from 12/05/02 to 05/15/03. The treatments were 0, 9, 11, 14, 19, 23, 28, 29, 34, 38, 42, 45 and 56 effective vernalization days, calculated with a beta response function to temperature. The soluble sugar and total nitrogen contents, and the duration of the planting-emergence (P-M) phase were determined. The vernalization promoted the mobilization of sugar and nitrogen reserves, which is important for the nutrition of the emergence of the shoot. The increasing number of the effective vernalization days reduced the duration of the P-E phase. Bulbs treated under temperatures of 10ºC for 6 to 8 weeks of storage (34 and 45DV), had the shortest duration of the P-E phase.
