Abstract The aim of this work was to determine the total phenolic content and evaluate the antioxidant, antibacterial, photoprotective and cytotoxic properties of corn silk ethanol extract prepared from corn silk that was air-dried at room temperature. Corn silk ethanol extract has a high content of phenolic compounds. The concentrations of ethanol extract required to produce 50% of maximal effect (EC50) in DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assays were 489.0 and 166.1 µg/mL respectively, indicating low activity when compared to the positive control. The ethanolic extract of corn silk showed antibacterial activity, mainly on Gram-positive bacteria. The in vitro sun protection factor (SPF) of the ethanolic extract of corn silk incorporated into sunscreen UVA-UVB 5% gel with Pemulen TR-1® was evaluated for the first time. A relative increase in SPF efficacy was observed for the extract when the sunscreen was incorporated. The ethanolic extract of corn silk and the gel were considered non-cytotoxic. The corn silk ethanolic extract was characterized using ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS). Eleven compounds including flavonoids, coumaric acid derivatives, terpenoid, hydroxycinnamic acid derivative and quinic acid derivative were suggested based on their accurate mass and MS/MS spectra.

RESUMO A artroplastia total de quadril, procedimento cirúrgico ortopédico realizado frequentemente pelo desgaste da articulação do quadril, pode ocasionar algias, incapacidades, distúrbios proprioceptivos, déficit no equilíbrio e na força muscular. Deste modo foi realizado um estudo de revisão sistemática com o objetivo de verificar se os pacientes submetidos a cirurgia de artroplastia total de quadril possuem alteração de força muscular e equilíbrio. Foram realizadas buscas nas seguintes bases de dados: Lilacs, Pedro e Pubmed, como também na biblioteca online Scielo e no portal da CAPES no período de agosto de 2017 a junho de 2018. Foram incluídos estudos realizados em população acima de 18 anos de ambos os sexos que passaram pela cirurgia de artroplastia total de quadril. A busca forneceu inicialmente 595 artigos, dos quais 15 foram selecionados para leitura completa, sendo destes apenas sete foram incluídos. Os estudos evidenciaram alterações de diminuição da força muscular e déficit no equilíbrio resultando na piora da capacidade funcional do indivíduo. Dessa forma, conclui-se que os pacientes que foram submetidos a cirurgia de artroplastia total de quadril possuem alterações no equilíbrio e principalmente na força muscular periférica. No entanto, devido à escassez de estudos relacionados ao tema, tornam-se necessárias novas pesquisas.

ABSTRACT Total hip arthroplasty, an orthopedic surgical procedure often performed by hip joint wear, can lead to pain, disability, proprioceptive disorders, a deficit in balance, and muscle strength. Thus, a systematic review study was carried out to verify if patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty had altered muscle strength and balance. Searches were carried out in the following databases: Lilacs, Pedro, and Pubmed, as well as in the online Scielo library and the CAPES portal from August 2017 to June 2018. Studies carried out on a population over 18 years of age who underwent total hip arthroplasty surgery. The search initially provided 595 articles, of which 15 were selected for complete reading, of which only seven were included. The studies evidenced alterations of decrease of muscular strength and deficits in the balance, resulting in worsening of the individual's functional capacity. Thus, it is concluded that patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty surgery have alterations in balance and mainly in peripheral muscle strength. However, due to the scarcity of studies related to the subject, new research is necessary.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Exposure to particulate material produced as a result of increased agricultural activity may increase the number of pneumonia hospitalizations among children. We hope to contribute to the knowledge base through highlighting the environmental mechanisms involved in this outcome and optimizing pollutant control policies. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between pneumonia hospitalizations among children and presence of environmental pollutants in a town in the Brazilian Legal Amazon region. DESIGN AND SETTING: Time series study conducted in the town of Tangará da Serra, Mato Grosso (MT), Brazil. METHODS: A total of 158 children aged 0 to 10 years participated in the study. Data on environmental variables and pollutants were extracted daily through the Coupled Chemistry-Aerosol-Tracer Transport model coupled to Brazilian Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (CCATT-BRAMS). Meteorological data were provided by the Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies Center (CPTEC). RESULTS: There was greater frequency of pneumonia hospitalizations in the months of transition between the rainy and dry seasons, with a prevalence ratio 2.4 times higher than in other periods. For environmental pollutants, there was a significant positive correlation between particulate matter (PM2.5) and pneumonia hospitalizations (correlation 0.11), with more admissions on the days when PM2.5 levels were highest (averages of 6.6 µg/m3 when there were no admissions and 13.11 µg/m3 on days with two or more admissions). CONCLUSIONS: The higher the PM2.5 level was, the greater the frequency of hospitalizations also was. Children living in peripheral areas had higher prevalence of pneumonia hospitalizations in the dry period than those who were living in the town center.

Although Quercetin absorbs in the UVA/UVB electromagnetic region, it is limited for applications as a UV filter due to its low lipophilicity and capacity to penetrate the epidermis. In order to overcome this limitation, we synthetized and evaluated the photo protective properties of a derivative obtained from Quercetin. The derivative was prepared by alkylation of Quercetin with iodoethane and characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy. The in vitro Solar Protection Factor was determined by the Mansur method and the cytotoxicity was evaluated using hepatocellular cell (Hep G2) cells. Finally, Quercetin and the corresponding derivative were incorporated in nanoemulsions. Nanoemulsions with particles sizes between 53 and 73 nm were obtained, and polydispersity indexes were around 0.1, indicating good homogeneity of the nanoemulsion particles. The cell viability study for the Quercetin derivative indicated a very low cytotoxicity profile. The chemical modification of Quercetin resulted in a promising compound with improved properties desirable for skin penetration and incorporation into sunscreen formulations.

Abstract Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a major musculoskeletal disease with high prevalence in the elderly. The study of genetic polymorphisms of inflammatory mediators involved in OA may contribute to the elucidation of the complex pathophysiology of this disease and identification of susceptibility individuals. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the association between polymorphism at tumor necrosis factor alpha gene (SNP – 308 G/A TNFA) with presence, severity and functional status of osteoarthritis in elderly. Methods: This study was characterized as case-control and encompassed 257 physically independent elderly (Mean Age: 68.55 ± 5.2; Minimum age: 60 and Maximum age: 82) were recruited. After this selection, the groups were divided in: 92 elderly individuals with osteoarthritis (case group) and 165 without the disease (control group). Methods: The individuals were genotyped by the TaqMan real-time PCR system. The subjects were classified based on the degree of radiological impairment according to the criteria of Kellgren-Laurence and regarding functional impairment using the WOMAC and LEQUESNE questionnaires. Results: TNFA gene polymorphic individuals (subjects harboring allele A) are more affected by OA (χ2 = 8.7, p = 0.003), once they have major radiological lesion both in hip (Fisher-Freeman-Halton Test = 3.9, p = 0.04) and knee (Fisher- Freeman-Halton Test = 4.0, p = 0.04) as well as worse functional status assessed by the Lequesne questionnaire (Mann- Whitney, p = 0.04). At the multivariate analysis, after adjustment for age, gender, body mass index, the presence of rare allele for TNFA (allele A) increases the susceptibility to OA development [OR: 1.87 (95% CI: 1.1 —3.2)]. Conclusion: We conclude that the SNP – 308 G/A of TNFA gene may affect osteoarthritis susceptibility, severity and functional status of individuals with osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the motor development of late preterm newborn infants (LPI) from birth to term-corrected age using the Test of Infant Motor Performance (TIMP) and to compare the obtained results with those of term infants at birth. METHODS: Prospective cohort study, 29 late preterm newborn infants were evaluated by the TIMP at birth and every two weeks until term-corrected age. The TIMP was administered to 88 term infants at birth. RESULTS: The mean TIMP score of late preterm newborn infants was 51.9±5.8 at 34–35 weeks and 62.6±5.2 at 40 weeks. There was a significant increase at 38–39 weeks in the LPI group (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in the motor evaluations between term infants at birth and LPI at the equivalent age. CONCLUSION: The LPI presented a gradual progression of motor development until the term-corrected age, but differences with term infants at birth were not detected.

Resumo O rápido desenvolvimento da química de polímeros nos últimos anos tem acompanhado a introdução dos materiais poliméricos no campo da medicina. Polímeros com aplicações médicas podem ser subdivididos em dois grandes grupos: materiais usados em próteses e a produção de polímeros biologicamente ativos. Neste trabalho foram sintetizados copolímeros possuindo cadeia principal de poli (metacrilato de metila) e cadeias enxertadas de polietilenoglicol (COP GRAFT). A partir da síntese do copolímero enxertado inicial foram realizadas modificações em suas cadeias de modo a aumentar a possibilidade de incorporação de um fármaco que será utilizado em sistema de liberação controlada de medicamentos. Os novos compostos foram obtidos através de duas rotas sintéticas e os produtos formados ao final de cada etapa foram purificados e caracterizados. Através da técnica de infravermelho (FITIR) foi possível observar as bandas de absorções características das ligações P-H, P=O e P-O, que foram inseridas na cadeia do COP GRAFT durante a fosforilação, além das bandas de absorções características do copolímero, antes da fosforilação, como C=O e C-O. A caracterização térmica das amostras utilizando termogravimetria (TGA) e calorimetria diferencial de varredura (DSC) mostrou que apenas o copolímero de diisobutila apresentou temperatura de transição endotérmica e comportamentos de degradação compatíveis a de um polímero. Através da técnica de difração de raios X (XRD) foi possível observar uma modificação da cristalinidade das amostras, provavelmente devido a uma variação da conformação das cadeias após a inserção de novos grupos químicos. Nos cromatogramas obtidos pela técnica de cromatografia de permeação em gel (GPC) percebeu-se aumento de massa após a fosforilação com o grupo diisobutila no COPGRAFT. A reação de fosforilação foi eficiente na obtenção do copolímero de diisobutila e as técnicas aplicadas demonstraram que houve a modificação no copolímero enxertado.

Abstract The rapid development in polymer chemistry has, in recent years, led to the introduction of polymeric materials in the field of medicine. Two major groups of polymers are used for medical applications: prosthetic and biologically active materials. We synthesized copolymers with the main chain consisting of poly (methyl methacrylate) and graft chains of poly(ethylene glycol) (COP GRAFT). Changes were made in the graft copolymer chains for a possible incorporation of a drug, such that it may be used for the controlled release of drugs. The synthesis of these new compounds is based on two synthetic routes and FTIR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterized the products formed at the end of each stage. Through FTIR we observed absorption bands characteristic of P-H, P=O and P-O bonds that were inserted into the polymer chain during phosphorylation of the COP GRAFT, beyond the absorption bands characteristic of the copolymer before phosphorylation, such as C=O and C-O. By TGA and DSC we observed that only the diisobutyl copolymer has endothermic transition temperature and degradation behavior consistent with a polymer. XRD results showed a structural and conformational change in crystallinity of modified chains. Molecular weight and polydispersity of COPGRAFT obtained by GPC increased after phosphorylation with diisobutyl group. The phosphorylation reaction was efficient in obtaining diisobutyl copolymer and the applied techniques confirmed the modification of the COPGRAFT chains.

This paper is a review of the history, synthesis and application of organophosphorus compounds, especially of those of pentavalent phosphorus, such as phosphoramidates, phosphorothioates, phosphonates and phosphonic acids with insecticide and anticancer activities. The organophosphorus compounds with agrochemical applications show great structural variety, They include not only insecticides, but also fungicides, herbicides, and others. The large variety of commercially available organophosphorus pesticides is remarkable. Even more interesting is the high efficiency of some organophosphorus compounds as anticancer agents such as cyclophosphamide and its derivatives.
