This work presents an approach to the scientific life of Ettore Majorana with the aim of providing support for didactic transpositions during undergraduate courses in physics, as well as during academic or professional master’s courses in physics teaching. Specially discussed are Majorana’s contributions to the formulation of the strong interaction theory and to the revision of Dirac’s theory, with the consequent emergence of the Majorana neutrino and Majorana fermions. The research in physics at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul started in 1960, soon after the creation of the Institute of Physics, by the end of 1960. The first area of concentration was theoretical nuclear physics, which in the sequence originated several other research areas. In 1974 was created the plasma physics group, incorporating some researchers originated from nuclear physics. The initial 25 years of the history of this group are discussed in this work, with emphasis on the scientific productivity in the form of master dissertations, doctoral thesis, contributions to scientific events, and publications in journals with international circulation. A brief bibliometric analysis shows the scientific maturity attained by the group and the degree of adherence to the ideas and principles which motivated its creation. A pesquisa em física na Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul teve início em 1960, logo depois da criação do Instituto de Física, no final de 1959. A primeira área de concentração foi a física nuclear teórica, a partir da qual emergiram várias outras áreas. Em 1974 foi criado o grupo de pesquisa em física de plasmas, com alguns pesquisadores oriundos da física nuclear. Os primeiros 25 anos da história desse grupo são abordados neste trabalho, com ênfase na produtividade científica em termos de dissertações de mestrado, teses de doutorado, relatos em eventos científicos e publicações em periódicos de circulação internacional. This work presents an approach to the works of Heisenberg, Majorana and Yukawa, developed between 1933 and 1938. These works delimit the transition from modern physics, based on the quantum theory of the 1920s, to one of the components of contemporary physics, namely elementary particle physics. The narrative’s central focus is the historical context of the development of the concepts of exchange interaction and strong interaction and the emergence of the concept of nuclear field and the quantum associated with it, the meson. Abstract Background Endovascular treatments for thoracic aortic diseases have been adopted rapidly, and long-term studies are relevant for durability evaluation. Objective To evaluate the long-term results of a prospective observational study of endovascular treatment in patients with thoracic aortic diseases who underwent percutaneous implantation of self-expandable endoprostheses. Methods Procedural success was defined as the absence of endoleak into the aneurysm or dissection-induced false lumen, no migration, and no conversion to open surgery. Intraoperative, postoperative, and late postoperative outcomes were evaluated in terms of complications, mortality, and evolution of the endoprosthesis over a follow-up of up to 179 months (median: 46 months). Results A total of 150 endoprostheses were implanted in 112 patients. Primary success was observed in 100 (82.14%) patients. Immediate mortality occurred in 7 patients (6.25%). Late mortality occurred in 31 patients (27.68%), 10 (8.93%) of whom died from cardiovascular causes, 12 (10.71%) from non-cardiovascular causes, and 2 (1.78%) from natural causes, while 7 (6.25%) had no diagnosis for cause of death. Types I, II, and IV endoleaks occurred during hospitalization in 4 (3.57%), 5 (4.46%), and 3 (2.68%) patients, respectively. Late types I and IV endoleaks occurred in 5 (4.46%) and 3 (2.68%) patients respectively. Twenty-two patients (19.64%) had clinical complications in the immediate postoperative period. Actuarial survival free from death from cardiovascular causes was 79.3% (95% confidence interval, 67.0-91.7%) at 132 months. Conclusions The low levels of intraoperative and postoperative complications demonstrate that endovascular treatment is safe and effective. Resumo Contexto Os tratamentos endovasculares para doenças da aorta torácica têm sido adotados rapidamente e estudos de longo prazo são relevantes para avaliação de durabilidade. Objetivo Avaliar através de estudo observacional e prospectivo, os resultados a longo prazo do tratamento endovascular em pacientes com doenças da aorta torácica submetidos a implante percutâneo de endoprótese autoexpansível. Métodos O sucesso do procedimento foi definido como ausência de vazamento interno para o aneurisma ou falso lúmen induzido por dissecção, ausência de migração e sem necessidade de conversão para cirurgia aberta. Os resultados intraoperatórios, pós-operatórios e tardios foram avaliados quanto a complicações, mortalidade e evolução da endoprótese em um seguimento de até 179 meses (mediana de 46 meses). Resultados Um total de 150 endopróteses foram implantadas em 112 pacientes. Sucesso primário foi observado em 100 (82,14%) pacientes. Mortalidade imediata ocorreu em sete pacientes (6,25%). A mortalidade tardia ocorreu em 31 pacientes (27,68%), dos quais 10 (8,93%) morreram por causas cardiovasculares; 12 (10,71%), por causas não cardiovasculares; dois (1,78%), por causas naturais e sete (6,25%) não tiveram a causa da morte diagnosticada. Vazamentos tipo I, II e IV ocorreram durante a internação em quatro (3,57%), cinco (4,46%) e três (2,68%) pacientes, respectivamente. This paper encompasses the taxonomic study of Chloris and Stapfochloa in Paraíba State, contributing to the knowledge of local agrostological flora. Consultations on the virtual databases, as well as visits to physical herbaria, collecting expeditions and fieldwork observations, were made. In the study area, the occurrence of five species of Chloris and one species of Stapfochloa was confirmed. Identification key, descriptions, information about economic value and geographical distribution, ecology, and images of the species are provided.

O presente trabalho compreende o levantamento taxonômico das espécies de Chloris e Stapfochloa no Estado da Paraíba, ampliando o conhecimento da flora agrostológica local. Foram realizadas consultas em bases virtuais, visitas a herbários físicos e excursões para coletas e observações em campo. Abstract As of August 2019, several oil slicks reached the Brazilian coast, compromising local ecosystems and the economy of coastal communities. In this context, this study aimed to assess seafood quality at the Canavieiras Extractive Reserve (RESEX), located in the state of Bahia, Northeastern Brazil, by determining polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) concentrations in local biota following the oil spill. It was designed and carried out in a participatory manner, involving RESEX fishers, shellfish and crab gatherers and managers, as well as university researchers. A total of 72 biota samples were analyzed, and the sum of the 16 priority USEPA PAHs ranged from less than the limit of detection to 30.81 ng g-1 (w.w.). When also considering alkylated compounds, concentrations ranged from 3.53 to 360.75 ng g-1 (w.w.). No sample contained PAHs concentrations suggestive of human consumption risks. No difference in PAHs concentrations between the six studied areas and regarding different biota feeding habits were observed. Higher PAHs concentrations were generally noted in molluscs, as these organisms do not have enzyme systems capable of metabolizing these compounds. This initiative demonstrated the feasibility of participatory construction resulting in a study concerning valued species to local communities, ensuring a contribution to local fishing and marketing activities.

RESUMEN Introducción. La enfermedad de Rosai-Dorfman, también conocida como histiocitosis sinusal, es un trastorno poco frecuente caracterizado por la proliferación de histiocitos. Presentación del caso. Hombre de 33 años quien consultó al servicio de urgencias de una institución de tercer nivel de Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, por una deformidad de progresión lenta que apareció 6 meses atrás en el costado frontal derecho de la cara y generaba dolor. Al examen físico no hubo hallazgos mayores y los estudios paraclínicos fueron normales o negativos. Se obtuvieron imágenes que evidenciaron extenso compromiso inflamatorio/infeccioso del hueso frontal, por lo que se sospechó de osteomielitis y se realizó biopsia de la lesión que permitió establecer diagnóstico de enfermedad de Rosai-Dorfman variante extranodal con compromiso óseo aislado. El paciente recibió tratamiento con corticoide sistémico sin obtener respuesta, por lo que se adicionó metotrexato, con lo cual se logró mejoría a los 2 meses. Conclusiones. Las manifestaciones de la enfermedad de Rosai-Dorfman en población adulta son poco conocidas, además no hay mucha información sobre su tratamiento, por lo que el presente caso contribuye a ampliar la literatura sobre esta enfermedad que puede presentarse con sintomatología completamente inusual.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD), also known as sinus histiocytosis, is a rare disorder characterized by histiocyte proliferation. Case presentation: A 33-year-old man consulted the emergency department of a tertiary care institution in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, due to a 6-month history of progressive deformity in the frontal right side of the face, associated with pain of slow progression, without any other symptoms or dermatological involvement. There were no other major findings on physical examination and laboratory tests performed were negative. Imaging scans obtained showed extensive inflammatory involvement of the frontal bone, which led to suspect osteomyelitis as the first diagnostic possibility. A biopsy of the lesion was performed with negative cultures for bacteria, which allowed establishing a diagnosis of extranodal Rosai-Dorfman disease with isolated bone involvement. Treatment with systemic corticosteroids was indicated with poor response, so methotrexate was added, achieving an evident improvement after 2 months. Conclusions: Little is known about the manifestations of Rosai-Dorfman disease and its treatment in the adult population. The present case report contributes to expanding the literature on this topic, which can present with rare symptoms that may pose challenges for its diagnosis.

Boraginales comprises approximately 125 genera and 2,700 species distributed worldwide. In Brazil, it is represented by 14 genera and 148 species grouped in four families. In this paper, we present the taxonomic survey of Boraginales in a Caatinga area located in the Curimataú Microrregion, where 10 species, two genera and two families were recorded: Cordiaceae, with two genera Cordia (one species) and Varronia (four species) and Heliotropiaceae, with three genera Euploca (one species), Heliotropium (two species) and Myriopus (two species). A key to the recognition of the families and species, as well as descriptions, illustrations, taxonomic comments and geographic distribution data to the species are provided.

Caatinga formations comprise the most important vegetation mosaic of the northeastern region. Asteraceae constitutes one of the five richest species families for this area, however, constantly neglected in floristic and taxonomic studies. The aim of this paper was to conduct a floristic survey of this group in the Curimataú Ocidental microregion, Paraíba State, which is considered an area with few information about its biodiversity, especially the flora. We based this study on monthly collections from April/2018 to September/2019 in the most diverse places of the area and consulting collections of the main herbaria of Paraíba and Pernambuco States. We recorded 36 genera and 38 species. Identification keys, descriptions, illustrations and images are presented for the sampled taxa.

Apresentamos os resultados de um estudo que analisa o uso do filme Radioactive como vetor de popularização da ciência e como recurso didático para a discussão de aspectos sociológicos da atividade científica e da natureza da ciência na formação inicial de professores de física. Para tanto, analisamos o filme sob o ponto de vista de sua correspondência com os fatos históricos e discutimos como os alunos o perceberam durante sua exibição em um curso de licenciatura em física. A análise evidencia que a cinebiografia apresenta equívocos históricos que podem gerar uma compreensão errônea do contexto abordado na obra. A presente intervenção didática indica que o enredo de Radioactive pode ser usado para a introdução de discussões sobre um conteúdo da física do século 20 e para o debate de elementos da natureza da ciência, na medida em que envolveu os estudantes em formação inicial na apreciação do conteúdo histórico e científico apresentado, bem como na reflexão e comparação sobre as ideias que possuíam sobre a radioatividade e aquelas apresentadas no filme. Os licenciandos consideraram o filme um recurso potencialmente útil, desde que se leve em consideração a contextualização da obra no cenário dos registros históricos.

This paper presents the results of a study whose aim was to analyze the use of the movie Radioactive both as a vector for popularizing science and as a didactic resource for discussing the sociological aspects of the scientific activity and the nature of science in the initial training of teachers of Physics. We analyzed the film in relation to the historical facts and discussed how the students perceived it during its exhibition. The analysis suggests that the biopic presents historical misinterpretations that may generate erroneous understanding of the context approached. The didactic intervention indicates that the Radioactive storyline can be used for introducing discussions about one of the 20th century physics content and debating about elements of the nature of science. The engagement of students in the appreciation of historical and scientific contents presented in the movie as well as the reflection and comparison among ideas they had about radioactivity and those presented in the film were fundamental. The students considered the movie resourceful, as long as one takes into account the relationship between the work and the scenario of historical records.

ABSTRACT Boraginales comprises approximately 125 genera and 2,700 species distributed worldwide. In Brazil, it is represented by 14 genera and 148 species grouped in four families. In this paper, we present the taxonomic survey of Boraginales in a Caatinga area located in the Curimataú Microrregion, where 10 species, two genera and two families were recorded: Cordiaceae, with two genera Cordia (one species) and Varronia (four species) and Heliotropiaceae, with three genera Euploca (one species), Heliotropium (two species) and Myriopus (two species). A key to the recognition of the families and species, as well as descriptions, illustrations, taxonomic comments and geographic distribution data to the species are provided.

Abstract Introduction: The medical use of three-dimensional (3-D) images has been a topic in the literature since 1988, but 95% of papers on 3-D printing were published in the last six years. The increase in publications is the result of advances in 3-D printing methods, as well as of the increasing availability of these machines in different hospitals. This paper sought to review the literature on 3-D printing and to discuss thoughtful ideas regarding benefits and challenges to its incorporation into cardiothoracic surgeons’ routines. Methods: A comprehensive and systematic search of the literature was performed in PubMed and included material published as of March 2020. Results: Using this search strategy, 9,253 publications on 3-D printing and 497 on “heart” 3-D printing were retrieved. Conclusion: 3 -D printed models are already helping surgeons to plan their surgeries, helping patients and their families to understand complex anatomy, helping fellows and residents to practice surgery, even for rare cases, and helping nurses and other health care staff to better understand some conditions, such as heart diseases.
