Resumo Este artigo apresenta uma discussão acerca das intervenções de conservação e restauro realizadas em cerâmicas arqueológicas, com ênfase no acervo do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (MPEG), localizado em Belém, Pará, região Norte do Brasil. A pesquisa tem como principal objetivo a identificação dos tipos de restauro encontrados na reserva técnica do MPEG e a aplicabilidade da teoria contemporânea do restauro na intervenção da cerâmica arqueológica. Para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa, foram analisadas as principais teorias de restauro e políticas preservacionistas do Brasil. Em seguida, reconheceu-se os valores culturais das cerâmicas arqueológicas e seu significado para a sociedade civil. Por fim, foram analisadas as intervenções restaurativas identificadas no acervo do MPEG, de modo a discutir sua trajetória ao longo do tempo. Ademais, debate-se sobre as reflexões pré-intervenções necessárias, de modo a determinar a intenção da restauração e as técnicas ideais para a salvaguarda do bem cultural.

Abstract This paper presents a discussion about conservation and restoration interventions carried out on archaeological ceramics with emphasis on the collection of the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (MPEG), located in Belém, Pará, northern Brazil. The main objective of this research is to identify the types of restoration found in the MPEG technical reserve and the applicability of the Contemporary Restoration Theory in the intervention of archaeological ceramics. For the development of the research, the main restoration theories and preservationist policies of Brazil were analyzed. Then the main cultural values of archaeological ceramics were recognized and their significance for civil society. Finally, the restorative interventions identified in the MPEG collection were analyzed in order to discuss their trajectory over time. In addition, it discusses the necessary pre-intervention reflections to determine the intention of restoration and the ideal techniques for safeguarding the cultural heritage.

Resumo Ladrilhos de marmorite são constituídos por argamassas pigmentadas compostas de agregado mineral moído, cimento (normal, branco ou pigmentado) e areia. O agregado mineral é denominado granitina, responsável pelo efeito decorativo das peças. Em Belém, PA, Brasil, a origem da utilização desses ladrilhos data do início da importação de materiais de construção no contexto da industrialização. Os ladrilhos de marmorite são alvo das ações intempéricas e antrópicas que resultam em diversas anomalias, cujo tratamento depende das especificidades de seus constituintes. O objetivo deste trabalho é verificar a eficácia das técnicas de limpeza mecânica com água e sabão neutro, emplastro químico de bentonita e laser nas amostras de ladrilho de marmorite de cimento. Nos resultados obtidos por meio de medições de brilho e cor após diagnóstico por avaliação visual, a limpeza a laser apresentou resultados superiores, especialmente nas cores branco, preto e rosa. Entretanto, a técnica causou modificações nas propriedades de brilho do material. Já o emplastro de bentonita obteve resultados satisfatórios, especialmente na cor verde, sem provocar alterações no brilho das amostras. A pesquisa visa iniciar estudos de aplicação do laser em ladrilhos de marmorite para que, posteriormente, a técnica torne-se viável para outros produtos similares, de origem calcária e cimentícia.

Abstract Terrazzo tiles are made of crushed mineral aggregate, cement (normal, white or pigmented) and sand. The mineral aggregate, called granitine, is responsible for the tiles' decorative appearance. The origin of its use in buildings in the city of Belem (Brazil) dates back to the start of imports of building materials during Brazilian industrialisation period. Terrazzo tiles are subject to weathering and human action, which cause several anomalies whose treatment depends on the tiles' constituents. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of mechanical cleaning techniques using water and neutral soap, chemical bentonite patches and laser on terrazzo tile samples. After a visual analysis, the efficacy of the different methods was evaluated through brightness and colour measurements. The results showed that the laser cleaning yielded superior results, especially in the white, black and pink colours. However, the technique caused changes in the brightness of the tiles. The bentonite patch achieved satisfactory overall results, especially in the green colour, without causing changes in the brightness of the samples. This study aims to improve cleaning strategies so that, subsequently, the technique becomes feasible for other similar products, as well as for limestone and cement-based materials.

RESUMO Os ornamentos de cerâmica vitrificada eram usados como elementos decorativos e peças como as estátuas tinham papel alegórico no coroamento das fachadas para destacar ou para caracterizar a função tipológica da edificação ou como símbolo que o proprietário queria transmitir referente aos valores defendidos na época da Revolução Industrial. Os ornamentos nas platibandas simbolizavam riqueza e erudição, por ser atribuídos à elite, desde a época Moderna. A pesquisa teve por objetivo a identificação dos ornamentos de platibanda de cerâmica vitrificada que compõem a arquitetura eclética do Centro Histórico de Belém (Pará) e seu entorno com vistas a traçar subsídios a sua preservação. Buscou-se identificar e localizar os tipos de ornamentos vitrificados existentes no Centro Histórico e seu entorno da cidade de Belém do Pará, por meio de inspeção visual da região, possibilitando analisar e compreender o contexto dessas peças na realidade local. Identificaram-se 225 imóveis com ornamentação de platibanda na área analisada. Fez-se uso de documentos textuais, catálogo impresso, jornais e álbuns do século XIX e XX para fundamentar a pesquisa e identificação dos ornatos. Os ornamentos de cerâmica vitrificada sofrem um acelerado processo de desaparecimento por estarem expostos nas platibandas das edificações, uma vez que estão mais vulneráveis à ação intempérica, seja ela física, química ou mineralógica, e à ação antrópica, inclusive atos de vandalismo. Esses ornamentos de cerâmica vitrificada são exemplares importantes do patrimônio cultural de Belém, por serem evidência da influência europeia na região, mais especificamente portuguesa, além de serem produtos do desenvolvimento técnico do material e simbólico do século XIX, que merecem urgentes ações de preservação.

ABSTRACT The vitrified ceramic ornaments were used as decorative elements and pieces such as statues, had allegorical paper in the crowning of the facades to highlight or to characterize the typological function of the building or as a symbol that the owner wanted to convey referring to the values defended at the time of the Industrial Revolution. The ornaments on the platibands formed a set of pieces with allegorical meanings, which symbolized wealth and erudition, to be attributed to the elite, since the Modern era. The objective of this research was to identify the ornaments made of glazed ceramic that make up the eclectic architecture of the Historic Center of Belém (Pará) and its surroundings with a view to tracing subsidies for its preservation. We sought to identify and locate the types of vitrified ornaments existing in the Historic Center and its surroundings of the city of Belém do Pará, through a visual inspection of the region, making it possible to analyze and understand the context of these pieces in the local reality. A total of 225 properties with ornamental plaice were identified in the analyzed area. The use of textual documents, printed catalogs, newspapers and albums of the 19th and 20th century was used to support research and identification of ornaments. Vitrified ceramic ornaments suffer an accelerated process of disappearance because they are exposed in the building panels, since they are more vulnerable to intemperate action, be it physical, chemical or mineralogical, and anthropic action, including acts of vandalism. These glazed ceramic ornaments are important examples of the cultural heritage of Belém, as they are evidence of the European influence in the region, more specifically Portuguese, besides being products of technical development of the material and symbolic of the nineteenth century, which deserve urgent preservation actions.

Resumo Com base em referências históricas, foram produzidas em laboratório duas formulações de tinta à base de cal objetivando avaliar suas características para o restauro de edificações com argamassas e pinturas à base de cal. Os materiais utilizados nas tintas foram cal hidratada, argila, água e óleo de linhaça (Linum usitatissimum L.), sendo uma formulação com cola PVA (acetato de polivinila) e outra com látex da sorveira (Couma guianensis) como aditivos fixadores. Cada componente da tinta foi caracterizado por meio de DRX e FTIR, e foram realizadas aferições de colorimetria e brilho. A avaliação das tintas ocorreu por meio das análises de permeabilidade pelo método do cachimbo e análise visual de pulverulência e de colonização microbiológica. Os resultados mostraram que as tintas produzidas são materiais de restauro compatíveis teórica e tecnologicamente com revestimentos à base de cal, mas cujo desempenho superficial é passível de melhoramentos, especialmente no sentido do aumento de sua durabilidade. A pesquisa também revela materiais próprios da região amazônica com grande potencialidade, tanto para estudos mais aprofundados, como para seu reconhecimento como matérias-primas de tintas.

Abstract Based on historic documents, two lime-based paint formulations were produced in laboratory in order to evaluate their basic characteristics as restoration materials for historic buildings with lime-based components. The paints were made basically with hydrated lime, clay, water and linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) oil, and one formulation had PVA (polyvinyl acetate)-based glue as fixative, and the other one, Couma guianensis' latex. Each paint component was characterized by XRD and FTIR, and color and specular gloss measurements were performed on both paints. A preliminary assessment of the paints was conducted using the Pipe Method, the salt crystallization test, visual analysis for dustiness, and analysis of microbiological growth. The results showed that the laboratory-produced paints are theoretically and technologically compatible with lime-based coatings, however, their superficial performance can be improved to achieve greater durability. This study also brings to light local materials from the Amazon region that have great potential to be used and recognized as raw materials for paints and which could also be investigated for other uses.

Abstract In Belém, Brazil, during the 19th century, Portuguese tiles were used for the external facing of sepultures at the Soledade Cemetery. These pieces are fragile because of exposure to the tropical climate and of their location close to the ground. This research aims to obtain subsidies for the restoration of the glazed layer, through hot restoration, to serve as theoretical and technological references for future restoration projects. The samples consisted of fragments of Portuguese historical tiles from the Soledade Cemetery. Restoration was performed by cleaning (both mechanical and chemical ways) and re-firing (1000ºC). Before and after the re-firing, samples were submitted to the analytical technique of X-ray diffraction. The results indicate that the re-firing eliminated defects and pathologies existent in the glaze and caused changes in the mineralogical composition of the ceramics. Used carefully, the hot technique is one of the alternatives to improve durability and protect the Soledade historical tiles.

Os monumentos históricos de Belém, PA, têm alvenarias estruturais constituídas de pedras e tijolos maciços assentados com argamassa de cal e podem apresentar diversas patologias, entre as quais se destacam a eflorescência salina e a ação da umidade. Alguns autores explicam que esses dois agentes ocasionam destacamento de camadas, pulverização de argamassa, surgimento de fissuras e aparência esbranquiçada. A pesquisa teve como principal objetivo identificar o processo de degradação atuante na alvenaria do transepto direito da Igreja de Santo Alexandre por meio da aplicação de técnicas instrumentais analíticas. Foram realizadas análises laboratoriais com o intuito de entender as condicionantes favoráveis ao processo de eflorescência salina, os danos provocados aos materiais e os tipos de sais mais atuantes. Primeiramente foi realizado o mapeamento da alvenaria e o mapeamento de danos, verificando a situação atual e as áreas mais degradadas. Posteriormente, foi realizada a caracterização física por meio de análise granulométrica, análise de traço e análise do teor de umidade da alvenaria, a caracterização química - teste qualitativo e quantitativo de sais - e a caracterização mineralógica por difração de raios X. Verificou-se que as técnicas aplicadas se mostraram eficientes e auxiliaram no diagnóstico correto, norteando quais intervenções devem ser utilizadas para amenizar a problemática.

The structural masonry of the historical monuments of the city of Belém, Brazil, is made of stones and solid bricks fixed with lime mortar, which is affected by different pathologies, including salt efflorescence and moisture action. Some authors explain that these two agents cause layer detachment, mortar pulverization, cracks and a whitened appearance. This aim of this study was to identify the degradation process affecting the masonry of the right transept of the Church of Santo Alexandre, using instrumental analytical techniques. Laboratory analyses were used in order to understand the saline efflorescence process, the material damage it causes and the main kinds of salts. The first step in the study was to map out the masonry and the damage, showing the current situation and the most damaged areas. That was followed by a physical characterisation through an analysis of mortar particle sizes and proportions, analysis of masonry moisture contents, chemical characterisation -qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis of soluble salts, and mineralogical characterisation by X-ray diffraction. The techniques applied were effective and contributed to the achievement of a correct diagnosis, guiding the type of interventions required to solve the problem.
