Nós capturamos pequenos mamíferos em oito fragmentos florestais (43 a 1.411 ha) nos períodos seco e chuvoso, no sudoeste de Mato Grosso, Brasil, e investigamos a variação na riqueza e na abundância de pequenos mamíferos e em variáveis relacionadas à estrutura da floresta (volume da liteira e abertura do dossel) e à disponibilidade de artrópodes, entre os dois períodos do ano. As amostragens foram realizadas durante o período chuvoso entre 2002 e 2003 e durante período seco de 2003. Em cada fragmento, foram utilizadas armadilhas Sherman, Tomahawk, Snap trap e Pitfall durante 10 dias consecutivos em cada época do ano, totalizando 17.600 armadilhas x noites. Foram obtidas no total 379 capturas de 20 espécies, sendo sete de marsupiais e 13 de roedores, com sucesso de captura de 2,2% (1,6% para o período chuvoso e 2,7% para o período seco). Não houve diferenças significativas na riqueza total, riqueza de roedores, riqueza de marsupiais, abundância total e abundância de roedores entre os períodos seco e chuvoso. Já a abundância de marsupiais foi significativamente maior na época da seca, quando a quantidade de chuvas é menor. O volume da liteira foi significativamente maior durante a seca, enquanto a disponibilidade de artrópodes foi significativamente maior durante o período chuvoso. Sendo assim, a grande disponibilidade de alimento no ambiente durante a estação chuvosa pode ter tornado as iscas das armadilhas menos atrativas. De maneira geral, as variações entre períodos seco e chuvoso observados estão de acordo com padrões descritos em outros estudos.

We captured small mammals in eight forest fragments (43 a 1.411 ha.) during the dry and wet seasons, in southwest Mato Grosso, Brazil, and investigated the variation in small mammal richness and abundance, as well as in forest structure variables (litter volume and canopy openness) and arthropod availability, between the two seasons. Sampling was carried out during the wet season between 2002 and 2003 and in the dry season of 2003. In each fragment, we used Sherman, Tomahawk, snap, and pitfall traps during 10 consecutive days per season, totaling 17,600 trap x nights. In total, we obtained 379 captures of 20 species, seven of marsupials and 13 of rodents. Overall capture success was 2.2% (1.6% during the wet season and 2.7% during the dry season). Total richness, richness of rodents, richness of marsupials, total abundance and abundance of rodents did not varied significantly between seasons. However, marsupial abundance was significantly lower in the dry season, when rainfall is high. Litter volume was significantly higher during the dry season, while arthropod availability was significantly higher during the wet season. Therefore, higher food availability during the wet season may have made trap baits less attractive. In general, the observed variations between dry and wet seasons are in accordance with patterns described in other studies.

Neste estudo foi determinado a cobertura vegetal e a composição florística em 38 parcelas de 3,75 ha (250 m x 150 m), distribuídas por 30.000 ha na savana de Alter do Chão, Município de Santarém, Pará. Nas 38 parcelas foram registradas 130 espécies em 45 famílias. As únicas espécies de dicotiledôneas que cobriram 1% ou mais da área no estrato herbáceo-arbustivo foram Dioclea bicolor Benth. e Lafoensia pacari A. St.-Hil. A maior parte da área foi coberta pelas gramíneas Paspalum carinatum Humb. & Bonpl. ex Flügge (16%) e Trachypogon plumosus (Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd.) Nees (22%). A gramínea Axonopus canescens (Nees ex Trin.) Pilg. e a ciperácea Rhyncospora hirsuta Vahl também cobriram mais que 1% da área. Apenas oito espécies, Anacardium occidentale L., Himatanthus fallax (Müll. Arg.) M. M. Plumel, Lafoensia pacari A. St.-Hil., Byrsonima coccolobifolia Kunth, Byrsonima crassifolia (L.) Kunth, Pouteria ramiflora (Mart.) Radlk., Qualea grandiflora Mart. e Salvertia convallariodora A. St.-Hil. tinham copas no estrato arbóreo que projetaram sobre mais que 1% da área. Destas, somente B. crassifolia (5,7%), S. convallariodora (6,0%) e P. ramiflora (2,1%) projetaram sobre mais que 2% da área. Cinqüenta e três por cento da área não tinha cobertura de arbustos, gramíneas ou ciperáceas, e 45% também não tinha cobertura de copas de árvores. Gramíneas e ciperáceas cobriram em média 39,2% das parcelas, e arbustos 11,0%. As correlações entre matrizes de similaridade para as espécies em diferentes estratos e grupos taxonômicos da vegetação foram geralmente baixas e houve pouca correlação entre matrizes baseadas em dados quantitativos e matrizes baseadas em dados de presença/ausência. Portanto, deve-se ter cautela em comparações entre áreas de savana baseadas somente em um estrato vegetativo ou em um grupo taxonômico.

In this study, we determined the floristic composition in 38 plots of 3.75 ha (250 m x 150 m) distributed throughout 30.000 ha of savannas of " Alter do Chão" , Santarém Municipality. Our surveys revealed 130 species in 45 families. The only species of dicotoledons that covered 1% or more of the area in the herb-shrub layer were Dioclea bicolor Benth. and Lafoensia pacari A. St.-Hil. Most of the area was covered by the grasses Paspalum carinatum Humb. & Bonpl. ex Flügge (16%) and Trachypogon plumosus (Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd.) Nees (22%). The grass Axonopus canescens (Nees ex Trin.) Pilg. and the sedge Rhyncospora hirsuta Vahl also covered slightly more than 1% of the area. Only eight species, Anacardium occidentale L., Himatanthus fallax (Müll. Arg.) M. M. Plumel, Lafoensia pacari A. St.-Hil., Byrsonima coccolobifolia Kunth, Byrsonima crassifolia (L.) Kunth, Pouteria ramiflora (Mart.) Radlk., Qualea grandiflora Mart. and Salvertia convallariodora A. St.-Hil. had canopies in the tree layer which projected over more than 1% of the area. Of these, only B. crassifolia (5.7%), S. convallariodora (6.0%) and P. ramiflora (2.1%) projected over more than 2% of the area. Most of the area (mean = 53%) did not have any grass, bush or sedge cover and 45% also had no tree-canopy cover. Grasses and sedges covered a mean of 39.2% of the plots, and shrubs 11.0%. The correlations between similarity matrices based on species in different vegetation strata and taxonomic groups were generally low and there was little correlation between matrices based on quantitative data and matrices based on presence/absence. Therefore, caution should be exercised in comparisons among savanna areas based on only one vegetative stratum or on only one taxonomic group.

We report the characterization and optimization of 45 heterologous microsatellite loci, and the development of a new set of molecular sex markers for the conservation and management of the Neotropical harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja L. 1758). Of the 45 microsatellites tested, 24 were polymorphic, six monomorphic, 10 uncharacterizable due to multiple bands and five did not amplify. The observed gene diversity of the analyzed sample of H. harpyja was low and similar to that of other threatened Falconiformes. While a high proportion of the microsatellite markers were highly variable, individuals of H. harpyja could be differentiated by a joint analysis of just three (p = 2.79 x 10-4) or four markers (p = 2.89 x 10-5). Paternity could be rejected with 95.23% and 97.83% probabilities using the same three and four markers, respectively. The sex determination markers easily and consistently differentiated males from females even with highly degraded DNA extracted from naturally shed feathers. The markers reported in this study potentially provide an excellent set of molecular tools for the conservation and management of wild and captive H. harpyja and they may also prove useful for the enigmatic Neotropical crested eagle (Morphnus guianensis Daudin 1800).

We sampled the small mammal community inhabiting semi-deciduous forest fragments in Mato Grosso, Brazil, using 4 different types of traps, Tomahawk, Sherman, snap, and pitfall, in order to evaluate the efficiency of different trap types in sampling efforts. During our study, we captured a total of 984 individuals of 27 species over 33 800 trap/nights. Sherman traps captured a significantly greater abundance of individuals and higher species richness than the other 3 types of traps. The Tomahawk and snap traps exhibited similar capture rates, in both the number of individuals and species captured. Pitfall traps captured the fewest numbers of individuals and species and were the only trap type to have different, although not significant, capture rates between seasons. Pitfall traps captured four times more individuals during the wet season than during the dry season. Despite their relative inefficiency and the large effort it takes to install pitfall traps, we found that these types of traps can be useful in augmenting trapping efforts, as they often capture species that do not, or rarely, fall into other types of traps.

Una comunidad de pequeños mamíferos fue estudiada en fragmentos de bosques semideciduos en el estado de Mato Grosso (Brasil) usando 4 tipos de trampas, de captura viva (Tomahawk y Sherman), de captura muerta (trampa de golpe: snap) y trampa de caída (pitfall). Considerando todos los tipos de trampas tuvimos un esfuerzo total de 33 800 trampas/noche, habiendo capturado 984 individuos de 27 especies. Las trampas Sherman demostraron ser significativamente más eficientes que los otros tipos utilizados tanto para abundancia, como para riqueza de especies. Las trampas Tomahawk y snap demostraron tener eficiencias similares en número de individuos y en número de especies capturadas entre las áreas estudiadas. Cuando se comparó la eficiencia entre las dos estaciones del año, verano e invierno, solamente las pitfall capturaron más individuos durante la estación de invierno en relación al verano; a pesar de haber tenido casi cuatro veces más de capturas durante este período, los resultados no fueron significativos. Pese al gran esfuerzo para el montaje de las pitfall, es fundamental su uso como complemento de los muestreos, por ser este método capaz de capturar especies que difícilmente, o raramente, logran ser colectadas usando otros tipos de trampas.
