Abstract Land Use Change (LUC) tends to have a negative effect on global atmospheric and climate processes. The objective of this paper was to assess the LUC for the San Fernando, Tamaulipas, Mexico municipality, during the period comprehended between 1987 and 2017. The classification by segmentation method was applied to satellite images obtained from 1987, 1997, 2007 and 2017, which allowed for a reduction in the noise that is characteristic of pixel-based classification. However, it was necessary to edit the results in order to recover human settlements, eliminate clouds and shadows, and reduce the confusion between vegetation cover and cultivated agricultural land in order to avoid introducing artificial LUC in the statistics produced. The multitemporal analysis showed a clear trend in the reduction of vegetation cover (-6.53 %) and of areas devoid of vegetation (-1.71 %). Likewise, the results also highlight a significant increase of agricultural land (+7.61 %), which seems to be unassociated with the increase of human settlements (+0.08 %). The developed methodology seems to be appropriate and of easy implementation to carry out the LUC analysis in other regions of interest.

Resumen El cambio de uso de la tierra (CUT) tiende a impactar de manera negativa los procesos atmosféricos y climáticos globales. El presente artículo tuvo como objetivo evaluar el CUT en el municipio de San Fernando, Tamaulipas, México, durante el periodo 1987 a 2017. Se utilizó el método de clasificación por segmentación de imágenes satelitales, de los años 1987, 1997, 2007 y 2017, el cual, permitió reducir el ruido característico de la clasificación basada en pixeles. Sin embargo, fue necesario editar los resultados, para recuperar los asentamientos humanos, eliminar nubes y sombras, y reducir los efectos de confusión entre cobertura vegetal y zonas agrícolas con cultivos presentes, para evitar introducir CUT artificiales en las estadísticas obtenidas. El análisis multitemporal mostró una clara tendencia en la reducción de la cobertura vegetal (-6.53 %) y del área sin vegetación aparente (-1.71 %). También se observó un importante incremento en el uso agrícola (+7.61 %), que no pareció estar asociado a un incremento en asentamientos humanos (+0.08 %). La metodología desarrollada parece ser adecuada y fácil de implementar para el análisis de CUT en regiones de interés.

Lidar is an active remote sensing technology that reduces the cost and time required to collect topographic data. The vertical accuracy of lidar data is normally set by commercial data providers at a maximum root mean square error of 0.150 m. However, the results of accuracy assessments where field data at least three times more accurate than lidar data have been used suggest that that accuracy is only met when the density of the lidar data is higher than 1 ground points per square meter. Unfortunately, the number of these studies is limited and more accuracy assessments are needed in order to establish the vertical accuracy of lidar data. In this paper, the vertical accuracy of a topographic lidar cloud point with a density of 1.02 ground points per square meter is assessed for different types of terrain. Reference data was collected on the field using a total station with millimeter accuracy in order to meet the ASPRS requirements for the accuracy assessment of lidar data. The results suggest that the vertical accuracy of topographic lidar data exceeds the accuracy specifications of commercial data providers and, also, are consistent with previous studies where the vertical accuracy of lidar was assessed under similar conditions. Therefore, it is suggested to set the vertical positional accuracy (EPV, after its Spanish acronym) of the lidar point cloud in 0.200 m for mixed terrain with constant changes and in 0.150 m for areas with smooth topographic changes. However, under the presence of systematic errors, the EVP does not convey the magnitude of 95% of the vertical errors, as intended; therefore, it is recommended to include the 95th error percentile in the documentation of lidar data.

La exactitud vertical de datos lidar es normalmente establecida por proveedores comerciales en un EMC máximo de 0.150 m. Sin embargo, los resultados de evaluaciones de exactitud en las que se han utilizado datos de campo por lo menos tres veces más exactos que los datos lidar, sugieren que dicha exactitud se observa solo cuando la densidad de los datos lidar es mayor a un punto sobre el terreno por metro cuadrado. Desafortunadamente, el número de estos estudios es limitado y se requiere de la elaboración de otras evaluaciones que confirmen dicha hipótesis. En este estudio se evaluó la exactitud vertical de una nube de puntos topográficos lidar de una densidad de 1.02 puntos sobre el terreno por metro cuadrado, usando como referencia datos recolectados en campo mediante una estación total. Los resultados coinciden con aquéllos de estudios previos, por lo que se sugiere establecer la EPV de la nube de puntos topográficos lidar en 0.200 m para terreno mixto y de cambios constantes y en 0.150 m para terreno con cambios topográficos gentiles. Sin embargo, la EPV no refleja la magnitud del 95% de los errores bajo la presencia de errores sistemáticos, por lo cual es necesario incluir el percentil 95 de los errores en la documentación de datos lidar.

Digital elevation models (DEM) are the most common and effective representation of the land surface. Unfortunately, similarly to most digital geographic information, DEM inherently contain errors, which magnitude should be assessed and informed to DEM users. One factor that introduces errors in DEM is the interpolation method and several previous studies have presented findings that disagree among them regarding the suitability of several interpolation methods for DEM generation. With the aim of contributing to this discussion and of improving the understanding of errors introduced in DEM by interpolation methods, in this paper we evaluate and compare the accuracy of DEM generated using both deterministic (IDW, ANUDEM) and probabilistic (OK, KT) interpolation methods. Our results suggest that KT produces more accurate DEM than the other interpolation methods evaluated in this paper and that it produces DEM without systematic errors, which occur in DEM generated using IDW, ANUDEM and OK. These results are consistent with some previous studies, but at the same time disagree with other similar studies.

Los modelos digitales de elevación (MDE) son la forma más común y eficaz de representar la superficie terrestre. Desafortunadamente, al igual que la mayoría de la información geográfica en formato digital, los MDE contienen errores de forma inherente, por lo que es necesario evaluar la magnitud de dichos errores e informar de su existencia a los usuarios de MDE. Uno de los factores que introduce errores en los MDE es el método de interpolación y diferentes estudios previos han presentado conclusiones que discrepan entre sí en cuanto a la idoneidad de diferentes métodos de interpolación para la generación de MDE. Con el objetivo de contribuir a dicha discusión y de mejorar el entendimiento del error introducido por métodos de interpolación en los MDE, en este trabajo se evalúa y compara la precisión de MDE generados utilizando métodos de interpolación determinísticos (IDW, ANUDEM) y probabilísticos (OK, KT). Los resultados sugieren que KT genera MDE más precisos que el resto de los métodos de interpolación aquí evaluados y sin la presencia de errores sistemáticos, como ocurre en los MDE generados usando IDW, ANUDEM y OK. Dichos resultados concuerdan con algunos estudios previos, pero discrepan al mismo tiempo con otros estudios similares.

Due to the popularity of Google Earth (GE), users commonly assume that it is a credible and accurate source of information. Consequently, GE's imagery is frequently used in scientific and others projects. However, Google states that data available in their geographic products are only approximations and, therefore, their accuracy is not officially documented. In this paper, the horizontal positional accuracy of GE's imagery is assessed by means of comparing coordinates extracted from a rural cadastral database against coordinates extracted from well-defined and inferred check points in GE's imagery. The results suggest that if a large number of well-defined points are extracted from areas of high resolution imagery, GE's imagery over rural areas meets the horizontal accuracy requirements of the ASPRS for the production of "Class 1" 1:20,000 maps. Nonetheless, the results also show that georegistration and large horizontal errors occur in GE's imagery. Consequently, despite its overall horizontal positional accuracy, coordinates extracted from GE's imagery should be used with caution.

Debido a la popularidad de Google Earth (GE), los usuarios asumen que es una fuente de información creíble y exacta. En consecuencia, imágenes de GE son frecuentemente utilizadas en proyectos científicos y de otras índoles. Sin embargo, Google especifica que los datos disponibles en sus productos geográficos son solo aproximaciones y, por lo tanto, la precisión de dichos productos no es documentada oficialmente. En este artículo, la exactitud posicional horizontal de las imágenes de GE se evalúa por medio de la comparación de coordenadas extraídas de una base de datos catastral rural contra coordenadas extraídas de puntos de verificación bien definidos e inferidos en las imágenes de GE. Los resultados sugieren que si se extrae un gran número de puntos bien definidos de áreas con imágenes de alta resolución, las imágenes de GE en áreas rurales cumplen con los requisitos de exactitud horizontal de la ASPRS para la producción de mapas 1:20,000 de "Clase 1". No obstante, los resultados también muestran que existen errores de georeferenciación y otros errores horizontales grandes en las imágenes de GE. Por consiguiente, a pesar de la exactitud posicional horizontal de GE, coordenadas extraídas de imágenes de GE deben ser usadas con precaución.

The main objective of the present research was to estimate the potential zones for the sugarcane crop in the southern region of the State of Tamaulipas, Mexico, from an agroecological point of view. The delimitation of these zones were generated by the implementation of a Geographical Information System (GIS) that facilitate the manipulation and overlay of thematic information layers, correspondent to information about weather, soils, and biophysical needs of the crop. As a first result, the agroclimatical zoning was determined, based on the estimation of the satisfaction index of the hydric needs and the growing degrees days. In order to get these indexes, daily information of 30 weather stations (period 1960-1999) was analyzed. To obtain the agroecological zoning, information on Units, Phases, Textures and soil Slopes was classified, in function of the crop aptitude to these variables and using the overlay and their algebra with the agroclimatical zoning, in this way potential zones for the crop were fixed. From the total of the evaluated surface (1 454 794.1 ha), 30.6% (446 021.0 ha) was classified as Very Apt (VA), 9.9% (145 104.9 ha) as Apt (A), whose restrictions were soil units, 0.03% (559.5 ha) was classified as marginally Apt (mA), with restrictions on the soils slopes; the rest, 59.5% (863 108.9 ha) correspond to No Apt (NA) for the studied crop.

El objetivo principal de la investigación fue estimar desde el punto de vista agroecológico las zonas aptas potenciales para el cultivo de caña de azúcar en el sur del estado de Tamaulipas, México. La delimitación de estas zonas se generó mediante la implementación de un sistema de información geográfica (SIG), el cual facilitó la manipulación y sobreposición de capas de información temática, correspondiente a información de clima, suelos y necesidades biofísicas del cultivo. Como primer resultado, y con base en la estimación del índice de satisfacción de las necesidades hídricas y de los grados día de desarrollo, se determinó la zonificación agroclimática. Para generar estos índices se analizó información a nivel diario de 30 estaciones climatológicas (período 1960-1999). Para realizar la zonificación agroecológica se clasificó información de Unidades, Fases, Texturas y Pendientes de suelo, en función de la aptitud del cultivo a estas variables y mediante la sobreposición y álgebra de éstas con la zonificación agroclimática, se delimitaron las zonas aptas potenciales para el cultivo. Se encontró que del total de la superficie evaluada (1 454 794.0 ha), el 30.6% (446 021.0 ha) se clasificó como Muy Apta (MA), el 9.9% (145 104.9.0 ha) como Apta (A), cuyas restricciones fueron por Unidades de suelos, el 0.03% (559.5 ha) se clasificó como marginalmente Apta (mA), con restricciones por la Pendiente de los suelos en estudio y el 59.5% (863 108.9 ha) restante, correspondió a la clase No Apta para el cultivo.

This work aimed to identify and classify artificial and natural inland wetlands in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico, important for migratory aquatic birds. Historically, efforts nave been focused on natural coastal wetlands or specific water bodies located in highlands; however, these surveys have not reflected the dramatic changes in landscape due to farming development in northem Mexico in the Iatest decades. Agricultural fieids and dams associated to them provide food, water and shelterto many migratory birds and other species, a fact not well documented. Factors that may influence the use of wetlands were analyzed, including surface area, associated vegetation and proximity to agricultural fieids. The inventory of inland wetlands was based on the analysis of seven 2000 Landsat ETM satellite imagery and field data gathered from 261 sites surveyed in 2001. Baseline maps were created and GIS analyses were undertaken to classify these water bodies. More than 23 000 inland wetlands were identified, and the information derived from this study will be assist in the development of programs to manage and protect wetlands of importance for migratory aquatic birds in Tamaulipas.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue identificar y clasificar los humedales interiores naturales o artificiales en el estado de Tamaulipas, México, de importancia para aves acuáticas migratorias. Históricamente, los esfuerzos en esta clase de estudios se han concentrado en los humedales naturales costeros o cuerpos de agua específicos en las tierras altas; sin embargo, estos levantamientos no han reflejado los cambios dramáticos en el paisaje, debido al desarrollo de la actividad agrícola en el norte de México en décadas recientes, la que junto con sus represas asociadas, proporciona alimento, agua y refugio a muchas aves migratorias y otras especies, lo cual no ha sido bien documentado. Se estudiaron algunos factores que pudieran influenciar el uso de humedales, como tamaño, vegetación asociada y proximidad a zonas agrícolas. El inventario de humedales interiores se basó en el análisis de siete imágenes del satélite Landsat ETM del año 2000, así como en datos de muestreo de 261 sitios de campo visitados durante 2001. Se generaron mapas base y se aplicaron análisis de sistemas de información geográfica (SIG) para clasificar estos cuerpos de agua. Más de 23 000 humedales interiores fueron identificados en el estudio y la información generada será de utilidad para desarrollar programas de manejo y protección de humedales de importancia para aves acuáticas migratorias en Tamaulipas.

The research aims to evaluate the potential impacts derived from the accelerated changes in land use and vegetation cover affecting the distribution of incoming solar radiation into sensible and latent heat in a secondary basin located at the central portion of the Tamaulipas state, Mexico. Evidences were found tlîat heat redistribution in some areas within the basin affected the local microclimate, impacting land by favoring desertification processes. The study used information from 1972 land-use maps and a 1998 Landsat satellite image to establish general trends in plant-cover changes. Additionally, time-series modelling and statistical analyses of temperature and rainfall were conducted for five meteorological stations located within the basin's influence area with historical records since 1958.

El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar los posibles impactos ocasionados en una subcuenca de la zona centro del estado de Tamaulipas, México, debidos a cambios acelerados en los usos del suelo y la cubierta vegetal, los cuales afectan la distribución de la radiación solar incidente en calor sensible y calor latente. Se encontró evidencia de que en algunas áreas de la subcuenca la redistribución del calor tuvo efectos en el microclima local impactando la superficie del suelo al favorecer procesos de desertificación. En el estudio se utilizó información disponible de mapas de uso del suelo de 1972 y una imagen de satélite Landsat de 1998, para establecer las tendencias generales en los cambios de la cubierta vegetal, y fue acompañado del modelamiento de series de tiempo y el análisis estadístico de datos de temperatura y precipitación de cinco estaciones meteorológicas localizadas en la zona de influencia de la cuenca, con registros históricos desde 1958.
