Bibliometrics is the application of statistical methods to analyze books, articles and other publications, especially scientific ones. Closely related to scientometrics and informetrics, to the point of overlapping and confusing. Bibliometrics refers to the study of the dynamics of the disciplines reflected in the production of their literature. It includes everything from the record of changes in the production of an academic discipline over time and between countries or regions, to the problem of the library collection. In this article some historical concepts, definitions and objectives of bibliometrics will be explained; as well as the Laws of bibliometrics; the types of analysis and bibliometric indicators most used; to finish with some examples of different types of published bibliometric studies, so that the reader can form a general idea of what he can do in this field, applying these methodologies to surgical disciplines and others as well. The aim of this manuscript was to generate a study document regarding bibliometrics as an alternative to develop research in surgery and related disciplines.

Resumen La bibliometría es la aplicación de métodos estadísticos para analizar libros, artículos y otras publicaciones, especialmente científicos. Muy relacionada con la cienciometría e informetría, al punto de superponerse y confundirse. La bibliometría se refiere al estudio de la dinámica de las disciplinas reflejado en la producción de su literatura. Incluye desde el registro de cambios en la producción de una disciplina académica a lo largo del tiempo y entre países, hasta el problema de la colección bibliotecaria. En este artículo se explicarán algunos conceptos históricos, definiciones y objetivos de la bibliometría; así como las Leyes de la bibliometría; los tipos de análisis e indicadores bibliométricos más utilizados; para terminar con algunos ejemplos de diferentes tipos de estudios bibliométricos publicados, para que el lector pueda formarse una idea general de lo que puede hacer en este campo, aplicando estas metodologías a disciplinas quirúrgicas y otras también. El objetivo de este manuscrito fue generar un documento de estudio respecto de la bibliometría como alternativa para desarrollar investigación en cirugía y disciplinas afines.

SUMMARY: The aim of this study is to quantify muscular and connective tissue volumes of extraocular muscles (EOM) in humans with no ophthalmological disease using stereology. EOM from five cadaveric non-strabismic humans were obtained. The number of muscle fibers in 5,000 µm2 and volume density (Vv) of muscle and collagen were measured using stereology. Comparisons between antagonist EOM were conducted using Wilcoxon signed rank test for paired samples. A secondary analysis examining differences between pairs of EOM was also conducted. Bilateral tests were performed, and significance was set at 0.05. The horizontal rectus muscles (medial and lateral rectus) had the highest Vv of muscle and the lowest Vv of collagen. The inferior rectus muscle tended to have a fewer number of fibers per 5,000 µm2 than the rest of the EOM. However, these differences did not reach statistical significance. This is the first published study describing the normal histology of human EOM using stereology. Our investigation, through the quantification of the proportion of muscle and collagen tissue, as well as the number of muscle fibers in 5,000 µ2, establishes normal stereological parameters for EOM of humans without ophthalmological disease.

RESUMEN: El objetivo de este estudio es cuantificar el volumen de tejido muscular y conectivo de los músculos extraoculares en humanos sin enfermedad oftalmológica conocida utilizando estereología. Los músculos extraoculares fueron obtenidos de cinco cadáveres humanos sin estrabismo. El número de fibras musculares en 5.000 µm2 y la densidad de volumen (Vv) de músculo y colágeno fueron medidas usando estereología. Las comparaciones entre músculos extraoculares antagonistas se realizaron a través de la prueba de los rangos con signo de Wilcoxon para muestras pareadas. Un análisis secundario examinando diferencias entre pares de músculos extraoculares también fue llevado a cabo. Se realizaron pruebas bilaterales y la significancia fue fijada en 0,05. Los músculos rectos horizontales (recto medial y lateral) tuvieron el mayor Vv de músculo y el menor Vv de colágeno. El músculo recto inferior tuvo la tendencia a poseer menos número de fibras por 5.000 µm2 que el resto de los músculos extraoculares. No obstante, estas diferencias no llegaron a ser estadísticamente significativas. Este es el primer estudio publicado describiendo la histología normal de los músculos extraoculares usando estereología. Nuestra investigación, a través de la cuantificación de la proporción de tejido de músculo y colágeno, así como el número de fibras musculares en µm2, establece parámetros estereológicos normales para músculos extraoculares en humanos sin enfermedad oftalmológica.

El presente trabajo de investigación tiene por objetivo desarrollar un modelo multivariable de tráfico para una red de datos Wi-Fi que permita estimar el valor medio de throughput; para lograr lo anterior se procedió a capturar los datos correspondientes con el software WireShark de una red inalámbrica Ad Hoc compuesta por ocho host, diseñada e implementada para tal fin. A continuación se estimaron los modelos multivariados más convenientes de acuerdo a las características del tráfico capturado y posteriormente se evaluaron los resultados obtenidos a partir del software STATA, determinando las variables explicativas más significativas dentro del modelo y su nivel desempeño. Los resultados arrojados por este proyecto de investigación demuestran la autosimilaridad presente en el tráfico capturado de la red Wi-Fi, además, se muestran en diferentes tablas los coeficientes de los modelos y sus respectivos niveles de significancia. Finalmente se desarrolló un modelo multivariado de cuatro variables explicativas a partir de la metodología de mínimos cuadrados ordinarios con un error porcentual del 22,16. Como conclusión, el modelo multivariado de tráfico desarrollado permite realizar un análisis de los valores medios del throughput con suficientes niveles de confiabilidad, sin embargo, no realiza una buena predicción de los valores de tráfico para datos que estén fuera del conjunto seleccionado para su estimación.

The present paper is aimed at developing a multi-variable traffic model of a Wi-Fi data network that allows estimating throughput mean values. In order to construct the model, data corresponding to an 8-host wireless ad- hoc network were collected using a software package called WireShark; the network was specially designed for modeling purposes. Subsequently, the most convenient multi-variable models were estimated according to the traffic features extracted from the collected data. Results were the evaluated using a software package called STATA, leading to the establishment of significant explanatory variables for the model and its performance levels. For our Wi-Fi network, results show that the analyzed traffic exhibits self- similarity features. Additionally, model coefficients and their corresponding significance levels are shown in various Tables. Finally, an explanatory multivariable model consisting of four variables was produced on the basis of ordinary least-squares methodologies (with a per-cent error of 22.16). The findings suggest that the multi-variable traffic model produced in this study allows a reliable analysis of throughput mean values; however, the model is limited when predicting traffic values for data outside the selected estimation set.

Background: It has been published that the result of tympanic membrane surgery is conditioned by the patient's age, being of worse prognosis in elder patients. According to recent studies, this tendency is decreasing. Aim: To assess the anatomical and auditory results of tympanoplasty performed in our department on patients older than 50 years old, in a 4-year period, analyzing other variables as well. Methods: Study of 23 patients. Results: The surgery was anatomically succesful in 82,6% of cases after a first surgery. In 52% of patients there was an auditory improvement of at least 10 dB of the aerial pure tone average. Conclusions: There were no significant anatomical or auditory differences in this age group compared with the general population, nor in the subgroup of older age. Moreover, there were no significant differences related to the type of graft, its position or surgical technique used, nor related to surgical variables such as use of postoperative antibiotic, presence of myringosclerosis, use ofgelfoam or status of the contralateral ear

Introducción: Se ha descrito que el resultado de las cirugías de la membrana timpánica está condicionado por la edad del paciente, siendo peor en los casos de edades extremas. Según las últimas publicaciones esta tendencia se ha demostrado en disminución. Objetivo: Evaluar los resultados anatómicos y auditivos de las timpanoplastías de nuestro servicio en pacientes mayores de 50 años, en un periodo de 4 años, analizando además otras variables relativas a la cirugía. Material y método: Revisión de 23 oídos. Resultados: Éxito anatómico en el 82,6% de los casos con una primera cirugía. En el 52% se obtuvo mejoría auditiva en al menos 10 dB del promedio tonal puro aéreo. Conclusión: No hay diferencias significativas anatómicas y auditivas en este grupo de edad con respecto al resto de la población general ni tampoco en subgrupos de edades más extremas. Tampoco se encontraron diferencias significativas en relación al tipo de injerto, posición de éste y vía de abordaje utilizada, ni en relación a variables quirúrgicas como son: uso de antibiótico posoperatorio, presencia de miringoesclerosis, uso de gelfoam en la caja y estado del oído contralateral

In this article, we provide results from simulations for alternative regulatory systems to be applied to the Jack-Mackerel (Jurel) fishery in the center-south of Chile. A model is developed to study individual firm behavior, and results are added for the whole fishery. Three regulatory regimes are simulated to study the short run effects associated to property and transferability characteristics of catching rights. This regimes include the application of a Global Quota, Individual Non-Transferable Quotas, and Individual Transferable Quotas (ITQ), all these for to attain a Total Allowable Catch (TAC). Comparisons of the effects of these alternative regulatory regimes on key firm´s decision variables (fishing effort and harvesting among different kind of vessels) are carried out. The analysis is conducted applying linear programming tools and using actual 1995 data of the Chilean´s Jack-Mackerel fishery in the center-south of the country. Specifically, a market of catching rights is simulated. The analysis allow to obtain an equilibrium price for the ITQ market, as well as other short run effects related to the characteristics of the market. Finally, results of comparative efficiency, in terms of costs of attaining an Annual TAC among the different regulation regimes, are obtained and discussed. The results suggest that regulatory regimes based on property rights will not eliminate the catching seasonality. However, these systems would notoriously reduce aggregated fleet's operation costs. Interestingly, the results also suggest a relatively low importance of the transferability characteristic of the ITQ system, in the short-run

En este artículo se muestran resultados de simulaciones de diferentes sistemas de regulación sobre la pesquería del jurel en la Zona Centro Sur de Chile. Se desarrollan modelos para simular el comportamiento individual de las firmas y los resultados son agregados para toda la pesquería. Se utilizan tres sistemas de regulación para estudiar los efectos de corto plazo asociados a la generación de propiedad individual y transferibilidad de derechos de captura. Estos regímenes incluyen la aplicación de una Cuota Global, Cuotas Individuales No Transferibles y Cuotas Individuales Transferibles, todos ellos para obtener el mismo nivel de Capturas Totales Permitidas (CTP). Esto permite realizar comparaciones de los efectos de estos sistemas en variables claves del comportamiento de las empresas (esfuerzos de pesca y capturas de los diferentes tipos de barco). El análisis se realiza utilizando herramientas de programación lineal y datos reales de la pesquería para el año 1995. Más específicamente, se simula un mercado de derechos, que permite observar precios de equilibrio y otras de sus características de corto plazo. Por último, se observan resultados de eficiencia comparativa, en términos de excedentes de pesca al obtener la CTP establecida. Los resultados sugieren que sistemas de regulación basados en derechos de propiedad no eliminarían la estacionalidad de las capturas en la pesquería del jurel, sino que la desplazarían. Sin embargo, este sistema podría incrementar notoriamente los excedentes agregados de operación de la flota. Los resultados también sugieren una importancia relativamente baja a la característica de transferibilidad de los derechos, al menos en el corto plazo

No presente trabalho foi observado o comportamento das variedades Stoneville-20, Nu-16, Gregg, Mebane, RM2 e IAC-12, quando üioculadas com um isolamento de Xanthomanas malvacearum (E. F. Smiith) Dowson, em condições de casa de vegetação e das variedades Stoneville-20, Nu-16, RM4 e RM2, quando em condições de campo. Pelos dados dados, obtidos, as variedades Stoneville-20 e Nu-16 mostraram-se resistentes ao isolamento testado, enquanto que as variedades RM4, Gregg, Mebane e IAC-12 máostraram-se suscetíveis. A variedade RM2 testada continha plantas que apresentavam reações fisiológicas, de resistência e suscetibilidade. Dentre as, progênies obtidas de plantas da variedade RM2 selecionadas em campo como resistentes só aproximadamente 20% mostraram alto grau de resistência quando testadas em casa de vegetação.

The pathogenicity of one isolate of Xanthomonas malvacearum (E. F. Smith) Dowson was tested under greenhouse conditions on the cotton varieties Stoneville-20, Nu-16, Gregg, Mebane, RM2 and IAC-12 and under field conditions on Stoneville-20, Nu-16, RM2 and RM4 varieties. Stoneville-20 and Nu-16 varieties showed a high degree of resistance when tested either under greenhouse or field conditions. The varieties RM4, Gregg, Mebane an IAC-12 showed to be susceptible to the isolate tested. The variety RM2 was found to be composed of resistant and susceptible plants. Only 20% of the progenies of RM2 plants selected as resistante plants when artificially inoculated under field conditions, showed to have a high degree of resistance when artificialy inoculation under greenhouse conditions.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo uma melhor compreensão do efeito do potencial de inóculo de Colletotrichum gossypii South sôbre a severidade do tombamento das mudinhas do algodoeiro. Num primeiro ensaio foi estudado o efeito de diferentes concentrações de inóculo de um isolamento de C. gossypii na variedade IAC-RM2. êste estudo revelou que a severidade da doença aumentava com o aumento da concentração do inóculo. No segundo ensaio foram testados 18 isolamentos de C. gossypii, com a mesma quantidade de conídios por ml, na variedade IAC-RM2. Neste ensaio, com excessão de um isolamento, todos os demais apresentaram o mesmo grau de severidade de doença. Num terceiro ensaio, tomou-se o inóculo produzido por cada isolamento e fêz-se a diluição dos mesmos com igual volume de água. Neste caso as concentrações do inóculo foram diferentes para os diferentes isolamentos e mais baixas que as usadas no segundo ensaio. Os isolamentos mostraram diferentes graus de patogenicidade na variedade IAC-RM2. No quarto ensaio procurou-se estudar o comportamento de 6 variedades de algodão usando-se 3 isolamentos do fungo. Os resultados, mostraram que as variedades IAC-RM2 S.M., ACALA 61/60 apresentaram um índice de severidade da doença superior às variedades IAC-RM2-2173, IAC-RM3 e IAC-12-1. A variedade IAC-RM4 apresentou índice de severidade da doença de grau intermediário aos dois grupos mencionados. Os dados obtidos no quarto ensaio não sugerem alta especificidade na relação hospedeiro-patógeno para os isolamentos testados nas varieddes utilizadas.

The effect of the inoculum potencial for Colletotrichum gossypii was studied based on the amount of damping-off produced on cotton seedlings under greenhouse conditions. The amount of damping off caused by G. gossypii increased as the concentration of conidia increased from 5 to 57.500 conidia per mililiter. When the concentration of conidia of all isolates, was adjusted to 575 conidia per mililiter, the amount of dasmping-off produced, was the same for all isolates, with the exception of one. When the inoculum produced by the different isolates was tested without any adjustement for the concentration, the isolates showed a wide range of pathogenicity. The cotton varieties IAC-RM2, IAC-RM3 and I AC-12-1 were less susceptible to C. gossypii than the varieties IAC-RM2 S.M. and ACALA 61/60. The variety RM4 showed to be intermediate in susceptibility when compared to the two groups.

O presente trabalho teve por finalidade estudar o efeito das diferentes porcentagens de areia, em substratos artificiais sobre a severidade de murcha do algodoeiro. Para êste fim foram utilizados substratos artificiais com quantidades variáveis de areia. Como inóculo foram utilizados suspensões de Meloidogyne, Fusarium e Fusarium mais Meloidogyne. Os três inóculos foram testados em duas; variedades de algodão. Os resultados obtidos com a variedade RM2 no 1.° ensaio mostraram uma maior incidência de murcha nos substratos, com maior porcentagem de areia, isto é, 90% e 60%. Quanto ao inóculo utilizado, a maior incidência da doença ocorreu nos tratamentos que receberam inoculação conjunta de Fusarium mais Meloidogyne. No segundo ensaio, utilizando-se a variedade RM4 não foram obtidos dados que mostrassem diferenças significativas entre substratos. Isto provavelmente se deve a um aumento no potencial de inóculo e uma melhor distribuição do mesmo. No entanto, houve uma diferença significativa para os tipos de inóculo utilizados, sendo que a maior severidade de doença ocorreu quando o inóculo era constituído de fungo e de nematóide, seguindo-se o tratamento cujo inóculo era constituido só de fungo No ensaio feito com variedade RM4 foi obtida significância para a interação tipos de inóculo versus substratos. A interação mostrou que o inóculo constituído só de Fusarium comportou-se diferentemente nos diferentes, tipos de substratos, utilizados. Tendo a maior severidade da doença ocorrido no substrato contendo a maior porcentagem de areia. No entanto, não houve diferenças significativas para a severidade da doença causada pelo inóculo constituido do fungo mais nematóides nos diferentes substratos, o que mostra efeito do inóculo de Meloidogyne sôbre o inóculo em potencial de Fusarium. Os diferentes tipos de inóculo comportaram-se de modo diferentes nos substratos de terra roxa, e nos substratos contendo 60% e 90% de areia, sendo que a maior coloração dos vasos foi obtida nos tratamentos que receberam os inóculos de Fusarium e Fusarium mais Meloidogyne.

The cotton wilt incidence caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. vasinfectum separate and mixed with Meloidogyne incognita, was studied on artificial substrates containing different sand percentages. When a susceptible cotton variety was used the highest wilt incidence occurred in the substrates containing 60 and 90 percent sand. The inoculum that caused the highest amount of wilt was the mixture of Nematodes and Fusarium. When a resistant variety was used no differences in wilt incidence were observed that could be attributed to differences in sand percentage of the different substrates. Again the highest wilt incidence was obtained with the inoculum consisting of the mixture of nematodes and Fusarium. The inoculum versus substrate interection showed that the incidence of wilt caused by the inoculum consisting only of Fusarium was highest in the substrate containing 90% sand. On the other hand the inoculum of Nematodes and Fusarium caused about the same amount of wilt in the different substrates. This shows the importance of the nematodes on the Fusarium inoculum. The interection also showed that the differences in wilt incidence caused by the different inocula was different in the same substrates, with the exception of the substrate containing 30% sand.

A finalidade do trabalho, foi obter dados para o melhor conhecimento dos fatôres físicos do solo, que influenciam a incidência de murcha do algodoeiro, causada por Fusarium oxysporum f. vasinfectum (Atk.) Snyder & Hansen. Foi estudada a influência do tamanho das partículas de areia e porcentagem da mesma no solo. O primeiro ensaio mostrou que, a porcentagem de areia tinha um efeito sôbre a incidência de murcha na variedade IAC - 12. A maior incidência de murcha, foi notada nos tratamentos que possuiam maior porcentagem de areia. No segundo ensaio, foi notado o efeito do tamanho das partículas de areia sôbre a incidência de murcha na variedade IAC - 12. A incidência foi mais intensa nos substratos com Areias Fina e Média. O terceiro ensaio mostrou que a resistência da variedade RM4, ao Fusarium, aparentemente não foi afetada pela porcentagem de areia ou pelo tamanho das partículas.

Cotton wilt incidence, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f vasinfectum (Atk.) Snyder & Hansen, was studied on different artificial soil-substrates in three consecutive experiments. The physical factors of the soil studied were percentage of sand and the size of sand particles. In the first experiment using IAC-12 a susceptible variety, the greatest wilt incidence ocurred in the treatments having the highest percentage of sand. In the second experiment using the same variety the highest wilt incidence ocurred in the treatments consisting of fine and medium sized sand particles, when compared with the treatment consisting of coarse sand particles. In the third experiment a wilt resistant variety, RM4, was used and there were no diferences in wilt incidence on the different substrates.
