Abstract Scientific diving (SD) is defined as any diving activity that applies scientific procedures to produce subsidies for studies and technical works in underwater environments. The first report of an underwater scientific study in Brazil dates to the 19th century, in the Abrolhos reefs. Currently, in Brazil, scientific diving has been performed in various areas, from shallow coastal regions to remote and sometimes hard-to-reach places, such as oceanic islands, flooded caves, and icy areas like Antarctica. However, the regulation of SD in Brazil still lacks more concrete actions towards an effective and efficient self-regulation that offers physical safety to practitioners and institutional safeguards for organizations that use it in their research projects. Thus, this article aims to contribute to a better understanding of this critical issue in Brazil and to serve as a reference and incentive for the training of professionals and the development of these activities in the country. It includes: 1) a historical review of SD; 2) a diagnosis of the training and application of SD in Brazil; 3) the evolution of marine sciences in Brazil from the perspective of SD; 4) a review of the use of environmental assessment and underwater conservation techniques in oceans and internal waters; 5) an analysis of the evolution of scientific diver training in Brazil, including a diagnosis on training; 6) the history and updates of the rules, regulations, and safety of SD. Given all the potential of diving combined with specific techniques for research, monitoring, and marine and limnic science in Brazil, we aim to understand the evolution of scientific diving teaching and to outline perspectives in the country, as it is crucial for the training of qualified scientists capable of performing these underwater tasks. Finally, we present future plans for the development of this activity in Brazil from the point of view of research and the labor market. Resumo Em quatro ocasiões, o dourado (Salminus brasiliensis) foi registrado seguindo a sucuri-verde (Eunectes murinus) em um rio de águas claras do Centro-Oeste do Brasil. Essas interações foram consideradas como uma evidência indireta de uma associação de seguidor conhecida como “associação de alimentação nuclear-seguidor”, uma condição na qual o seguidor se aproxima da espécie nuclear quando esta de alguma forma perturba o substrato e/ou forma nuvens de sedimentos enquanto forrageia, aproveitando a oportunidade para se alimentar durante essa situação. No entanto, observações diretas de dourados obtendo algum benefício da atividade das sucuris para se alimentar não foram feitas. Abstract On four occasions, the golden dorado (Salminus brasiliensis) was recorded following the green anaconda (Eunectes murinus) in a clearwater river of Midwest Brazil. These observations were considered as an indirect evidence of a following association known as “nuclear-follower feeding association”, a condition in which the follower approach the nuclear when it somehow disturbs the substrate and form sediment clouds while foraging, taking the opportunity to feed during this situation. However, no direct observations of golden dorados getting some benefit from the activity of the green anacondas to feed were made. RESUMO Interações realizadas por peixes podem modular a diversidade e assegurar a estabilidade de comunidades em rios tropicais. Apesar dessa importância, poucos estudos relacionam as interações ecológicas com as características do habitat, estrutura da comunidade e atributos das espécies de peixes. Por meio de filmagens remotas subaquáticas nós verificamos como a pressão alimentar dos peixes sobre a comunidade bentônica e as interações agonísticas entre peixes são influenciadas por essas características do habitat e da comunidade em um rio tropical de água clara na região Centro-Oeste do Brasil. Também realizamos censos visuais para estimar a abundância e a biomassa dos peixes e propusemos uma classificação funcional para entender como essas variáveis podem afetar as interações dos peixes. A estrutura da comunidade foi o principal fator que afetou a variação nas interações entre os habitats. A biomassa dos peixes determinou em qual hábitat um peixe se alimentará, enquanto a abundância das espécies determinou com quantas outras espécies elas interagem nas redes de interações agonísticas de cada habitat. Habitats específicos não são apenas ocupados, mas também utilizados de maneiras distintas pela comunidade de peixes. Nossos resultados demonstram a importância da heterogeneidade de habitats para as interações realizadas pelos peixes em rios tropicais e como a intensidade dessas interações é afetada pela estrutura da comunidade.

ABSTRACT Species interactions can modulate the diversity and enhance the stability of biological communities in aquatic ecosystems. Despite previous efforts to describe fish interactions in tropical rivers, the role of habitat characteristics, community structure, and trophic traits over these interactions is still poorly understood. To investigate among-habitat variation in substratum feeding pressure and agonistic interactions between fishes, we used remote underwater videos in three habitats of a clearwater river in the Central Western, Brazil. We also performed visual surveys to estimate the abundance and biomass of fishes and proposed a trophic classification to understand how these variables can affect fish interactions. Community structure was the main factor affecting the variation in the interactions among the habitats. Biomass was the main variable determining which habitat a fish will feed on, while species abundance determined with how many other species it will interact in the agonistic interaction networks for each habitat. Specific habitats are not only occupied, but also used in distinct ways by the fish community. Overall, our results demonstrate the importance of the heterogeneity of habitats in tropical rivers for the interactions performed by the fishes and how the intensity of these interactions is affected by community structure.

Resumo: Uma nova tática de forrageamento do acará, Geophagus brasiliensis, é descrita a partir de observações subaquáticas realizadas em um riacho costeiro da Mata Atlântica, Sudeste do Brasil. Chamada de "virar para pegar", a tática de forrageamento envolve o movimento de folhas, galhos e cascas de árvores presentes no substrato, com os peixes usando a boca para virar objetos e expor macroinvertebrados aderidos à parte de baixo dos objetos explorados ("lado B"). O comportamento de mover objetos é raramente relatado e o presente trabalho parece ser o primeiro registro para uma espécie de água doce da América do Sul.

Abstract: A new foraging tactic for the pearl cichlid, Geophagus brasiliensis, is described from underwater observations performed in a coastal stream of the Atlantic Forest, Southeastern Brazil. Named "shift picking", the foraging tactic involved the manoeuvering of leaves, wood twigs and tree bark present in the substrate, with fish using its mouth to turn objects and uncover macroinvertebrates adhered to the underside of the object being picked ("B-side"). The object-shifting behaviour is rarely reported for fish and the present description seems to be the first record for a freshwater species of South America.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever a abordagem cirúrgica artroscópica do impacto subespinhal (ISE) da espinha ilíaca anteroinferior (EIAI) associado ao impacto femoroacetabular (IFA) misto, por meio de dois portais artroscópicos padrão (anterolateral e medioanterior distal) em pacientes com impacto trifocal. Os autores relatam os casos de dois pacientes do sexo masculino, de 32 e 36 anos, com impacto femoropelvico trifocal (IFPT). A técnica consiste na ressecção segmentar da cápsula, dissecção artroscópica da EIAI com liberação parcial do reto femoral, osteoplastia com ressecção da proeminência com lâmina óssea e auxílio radioscópico, correção do pincer, reparo da lesão condrolabial com âncoras e osteoplastia femoral. Detalhes sobre o diagnóstico e a técnica são apresentados e discutidos. Nos casos operados, foi observada recuperação do arco de movimento normal do quadril e ausência de dor, que se mantiveram por um ano pós-operatório. Radiografias demonstram boa correção dos três focos de impacto em ambos os pacientes. A simultânea correção do IFPT nos seus três componentes (came, pincer e subespinhal) promoveu alívio completo dos sintomas e o retorno ao trabalho e aos esportes. Propõe-se que, na abordagem do ISE sintomático, sempre seja considerada a possibilidade da presença de IFA associado; nesses casos, a abordagem deve ser completa.

ABSTRACT To describe the arthroscopic surgical technique for subspine impingement (SSI) of the anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS) associated with mixed type femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), through two standard arthroscopic portals (anterolateral and distal mid-anterior) in two patients with trifocal impingement. The authors report the cases of two young male patients, aged 32 and 36 years old, with trifocal femoropelvic impingement (TFPI). The technique consists of segmental capsulectomy, arthroscopic dissection of the AIIS, partial release of the direct head of the rectus femoris, resection of the AIIS projection with a burr and with fluoroscopic aid, correction of the pincer deformity, repair of the labrum with bioabsorbable anchors, and femoral osteoplasty. Details of the diagnostic workup and of the surgical technique are provided and discussed. In these cases, full range of motion was regained after surgery, as well as complete relief of pain, which was sustained in the last follow-up, one year post-operatively. Radiographs show adequate correction of the deformities in all three impingement sites. Simultaneous correction of the three sites (cam, pincer, and subspinal) provided full relief of symptoms and allowed return to work and sports. The authors propose that when approaching the symptomatic SSI, the possibility of concomitant FAI should always be considered and, in those cases, the approach must be comprehensive.

RESUMO Os peixes de água doce do estado de Mato Grosso do Sul se distribuem em duas sub-bacias da bacia do Prata, Paraguai e Alto Paraná. A lista das espécies de peixes que ocorrem no estado de Mato Grosso do Sul foi compilada com base em dados de coleções, literatura e consulta a especialistas. São registradas 358 espécies, distribuídas por onze ordens e 43 famílias. Para a bacia do Paraguai são listadas 255 espécies; 201 o foram para a bacia do Alto Paraná. Cem espécies foram listadas para as duas bacias. Destas, 49 são espécies que ocorrem naturalmente nas duas bacias. Das outras espécies compartilhadas, três foram introduzidas nas duas vertentes e 45 introduzidas na bacia do Alto Paraná, a partir das bacias do Paraguai ou Médio Paraná. Quase um terço das espécies arroladas para a bacia do Alto Paraná (64), em Mato Grosso do Sul, foram introduzidas; introduções na vertente do rio Paraguai representam 1,2% da lista para a bacia. O número de espécies é considerado ainda baixo, representando um conhecimento ainda bastante incompleto, especialmente das regiões de cabeceiras do estado, mas também das terras baixas do Pantanal. Aspectos relacionados à conservação da ictiofauna do estado também são abordados.

ABSTRACT The freshwater fishes of Mato Grosso do Sul state are distributed in two Prata basin sub-basins, Paraguay and Upper Paraná. The species list for that state was compiled based on Collection records, literature and consultation with other ichthyologists. The list includes 358 species, belonging to eleven orders and 43 families. For the Paraguay basin, 255 species were listed; 201 were registered in the Upper Paraná basin. At least 100 species are present in the two watersheds. Of those, 49 species are indigenous to the two basins. Among the other shared species, three were introduced into both basins and 45 are native to the Paraguay and/or Middle Parana basins and were intentionally or inadvertently introduced into the Upper Paraná basin. Nearly one third of the species registered in the Upper Parana basin (64), in Mato Grosso do Sul were introduced, whereas introductions in the Paraguay basin correspond to 1.2% of the species listed. The number of species presented in this paper is considered to be low, representing the still incomplete knowledge, specially of the headwater regions, but also of the lowlands of the Pantanal. Threats to this ichthyofauna and aspects of its conservation status are also discussed.

RESUMO INTRODUÇÃO: a atividade pesqueira no alto Rio Paraguai tem grande impacto financeiro e biológico. Este estudo retrospectivo investigou a ocorrência de acidentes causados por peixes do gênero Pseudoplatystoma (pintados e cacharas) em pescadores do Pantanal do Mato Grosso do Sul. MÉTODOS: obtivemos as informações através de um questionário, que mostrou que a pesca é feita por trabalhadores com baixo nível de educação, principalmente adultos ou idosos com baixos ganhos financeiros. RESULTADOS: no município de Miranda, 126 dos 315 pescadores foram entrevistados, com 38 relatando acidentes (30.16%). Em Corumbá, 355 de 627 pescadores foram entrevistados, com 111 acidentados. As lesões laceradas foram mais comuns, associadas com edema, eritema, dor irradiada para a raiz do membro, parestesias e necrose local. Mais raramente, reportaram a ocorrência de fenômenos sistêmicos, como febre, arritmias e sudorese fria. Estas manifestações podem estar relacionadas com infecções secundárias. Muitos tratamentos questionáveis e inapropriados são usados, por vezes agravando o quadro. CONCLUSÕES: os pescadores profissionais de água doce necessitam de orientação sobre primeiros socorros e medidas de prevenção de acidentes causados por estes peixes.

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: the fishing activity throughout the Upper Paraguay River Basin has huge financial and biological importance. This retrospective study investigated the occurrence of injuries caused by fish of the Pseudoplatystoma genus (spotted catfish or pintado and striped catfish or cachara) in professional fishermen of the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul State. METHODS: we collected information through a questionnaire, showing that fishing is carried out by workers with low level of education, mainly adults or seniors with low financial gains. RESULTS: in Miranda town, 126 of 315 fishermen were interviewed and 38 individuals reported injuries (30.16%). In Corumbá town, 355 of 627 fishermen were interviewed, and 111 (56,61%) reported injuries. The lacerated lesions were the most common, associate with edema, erythema, radiating pain to the root of the limb, paresthesias and local necrosis. More rarely, they reported the occurrence of fever, cardiac arrhythmias and cold sweating. These manifestations may be associated with late secondary infections or envenomations caused by the toxins in the stingers of the fish. Many questionable and inappropriate treatments are used, sometimes aggravating the injuries. CONCLUSIONS: the freshwater professional fishermen need guidance on first aid measures and prevention of accidents caused by these venomous fish.

Bonito, no estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, é atualmente um importante destino de ecoturismo no Brasil e o seu principal desafio tem sido o de acomodar e ajustar de forma sustentável a crescente procura de turistas sem comprometer a sua integridade ecológica. O objetivo deste estudo consistiu em avaliar o impacto do ecoturismo na ictiofauna do rio Sucuri localizado em Bonito, através da utilização integrada de critérios ecológicos, comportamentais e fisiológicos e utilizando as espécies de peixes Crenicichla lepidota e Moenkhausia bonita como indicadores. Para tal foram determinadas duas áreas distintas de amostragens no rio: (1) local onde ocorrem visitas turísticas diárias (Tourism) e (2) local sem qualquer tipo de impacto humano (No Tourism). O método de censos visuais por pontos fixos foi utilizado para determinar variações nos parâmetros ecológicos e os métodos "ad libitum" e animal focal foram utilizados para coletar dados comportamentais para as duas espécies em estudo. A resposta fisiológica à presença de turistas foi testada em M. bonita através da determinação de cortisol na água por um método não-invasivo de captura, transporte e confinamento. Os resultados obtidos indicam que no local exposto ao turismo há um aumento significativo da riqueza específica, densidade e diversidade de espécies. No entanto, a nível comportamental C. lepidota apresenta mudanças significativas de comportamento alimentar, agonístico, de fuga e guarda do ninho entre os dois locais. Moenkhausia bonitaapresenta mudanças significativas não só a nível do seu comportamento alimentar e de fuga, mas também apresenta níveis de cortisol significativamente superiores no local com turismo. Contrariamente aos dados ecológicos, os resultados comportamentais e fisiológicos poderão ser interpretados numa primeira análise como impactos negativos do ecoturismo que surgem em antecipação a mudanças significativas na estrutura e composição das comunidades.

Bonito, in Mato Grosso do Sul State, is an important destination for ecotourism in Brazil and the main challenge of sustainable ecotourism here has been to accommodate and adjust the increase of tourism without compromising the ecological integrity of the local ecosystems. In this study we aimed to assess the environmental impact of ecotourism on the fish fauna of Sucuri River in Bonito by integrating ecological, behaviour and physiological criteria and using the fish species Crenicichla lepidota and Moenkhausia bonita as indicators. Two distinct sites were defined to collect data: (1) affected daily by ecotourism (Tourism) and (2) undisturbed (No Tourism). The "stationary point count" method was performed to assess variations in ecological parameters and "ad libitum" and focal animal methods were used to collect behaviour data. The cortisol response of M. bonita to a stress protocol was measured from holding-water. Results showed a significantly increase in species richness, density and diversity at the Tourism site. Nevertheless, behaviour patterns indicated a higher stress at the Tourism site for both species as well higher cortisol levels for M. bonita. In opposition to the ecological measures, the behaviour and physiological ones may be interpreted as an early sign of negative impact caused by ecotourism, prior to changes at community level.

Paternal care is rare in most animals, but common in fishes, including Pomacentridae. One way of explaining it is through the territorial hypothesis, which predicts that paternal care may evolve when caring for a territory with eggs will not cost more than territories without eggs. Here we describe the reproductive behavior of three pomacentrids from São Paulo, Brazil, and evaluate if the territorial hypothesis explains their behavioral variation through five predictions. We checked if females have multiple spawns (prediction 1), if they forage more (prediction 2) and if territory defence demands more when eggs are present (prediction 3). We also described how visible eggs are (prediction 4) and how available nesting sites are (prediction 5). Chromis multilineata differed from Abudefduf saxatilis and Stegastes fuscus by not guarding the eggs, spending less time with territoriality and fanning eggs; and more time feeding and foraging. Females of the three species are iteroparous. Females' A. saxatilis and S. fuscus foraged more than males, which spent the same amount of time in territorial defence before and after eggs were delivered. These two species also have very conspicuous egg clutches on clean rock surfaces defended by them. On the other hand, males and females of C. multilineata spent the same time foraging, while territoriality took more effort after eggs were present and it spawns cryptic eggs amid Sargassum, a common and disperse micro-environment in São Paulo rocky shores. Territorial hypothesis explains why paternal care by A. saxatilis and S. fuscus lasts longer than by C. multilineata.

El cuidado paterno es raro en la mayoría de los animales, pero común en los peces, incluyendo los Pomacentridae. Una forma de explicar este fenómeno es la hipótesis territorial, que predice que el cuidado paterno puede evolucionar cuando la protección de un territorio con huevos no cuesta más que la de territorios sin huevos. Aquí se describe el comportamiento reproductivo de tres pomacentrídios de São Paulo, Brasil, y se evalúa si la hipótesis territorial explica la variación de su comportamiento a través de cinco predicciones. Se analizó si las hembras tienen múltiples desoves (predicción 1), si forrajean más (predicción 2) y si la defensa del territorio es mayor cuando los huevos están presentes (predicción 3). También se evaluó si los huevos eran visibles (predicción 4) y cuán disponibles eran los sitios de anidación (predicción 5). Chromis multilineata difería de Abudefduf saxatilis y Stegastes fuscus por no proteger a sus huevos, dedicar menos tiempo a la territorialidad y ventilación de sus huevos, y más tiempo para la alimentación y forrajeo. Las hembras de las tres especies son iteróparas. Las hembras de A. saxatilis y S. fuscus forrajean más que los machos, que gastan la misma cantidad de tiempo en la defensa territorial antes y después de liberar los huevos. Estas dos especies también defienden a desoves muy conspicuos adheridos en superficies de roca limpia. Por otra parte, las hembras y machos de C. multilineata pasaron el mismo tiempo forrajeando, mientras la territorialidad tomó más esfuerzo después, con los huevos presentes, y los desoves estaban escondidos en medio de Sargassum, un ambiente común y disperso en micro-ambientes de las costas rocosas de São Paulo. La hipótesis territorial explica el motivo por el cual el cuidado paterno de A. saxatilis y S. fuscus es más prolongado que el de C. multilineata.

No distrito de Bom Jardim, Nobres, Mato Grosso, Brasil, existem rios de águas claras que se originam sobre terreno cárstico. O dourado, Salminus brasiliensis, é um predador perseguidor de topo de cadeia nestes rios. Em águas, onde presas visualmente orientadas são capazes de perceber antecipadamente o predador, o fator surpresa é necessário para ataques bem sucedidos. Estes córregos são coabitados por outros Characiformes, como a frugívora piraputanga, Brycon hilarii, a qual vive em cardumes e exibe coloração do corpo e forma similares aos dourados. Aqui descrevemos a ocorrência de uma tática predatória alternativa para dourados juvenis, na qual eles agem como mímicos agressivos da piraputanga. Baseados em 43 h de observação em Bom Jardim e 11 h adicionais em riachos da Bodoquena, Mato Grosso do Sul, nós quantificamos o número de arremetidas do dourado quando estava entre as piraputangas ou forrageando sozinhos e observamos a proporção de piraputangas por dourado em cardumes multiespecíficos. Dourados de até 30 cm de comprimento total permaneceram entre as piraputangas de tamanho similar, escondendo-se em meio ao cardume e indo à periferia deste antes de arremeter contra suas presas. Os dourados exibiam cores similares às da piraputanga. Eles não só permaneceram mais tempo entre as piraputangas (78% do tempo de observação), mas também arremeteram mais frequentemente contra as presas do que enquanto forrageavam sozinhos (53 arremetidas/h contra 14 arremetidas/h, respectivamente).

In the district of Bom Jardim, in Nobres, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, there are clear water streams originating on karstic terrain. The dourado, Salminus brasiliensis, is an apex stalking predator in these streams. In clear waters, where visually oriented prey may perceive predator in advance, surprise is needed for successful attacks. These streams are cohabited by other Characiformes, like the frugivorous piraputanga Brycon hilarii, which lives in schools and exhibits body colour and shape similar to the dourados. Here we describe an alternative predatory tactic for juvenile dourado occurring in headwater streams of the Paraguay River basin, in which they act as an aggressive mimic of the piraputanga. Based on 43 h of observations in Bom Jardim, and on additional 11 h in the Bodoquena Plateau Rivers of Mato Grosso do Sul State, we quantified the number of rushes by dourados when they were among piraputangas or foraging alone, and observed the proportion of piraputangas per dourado in multispecific schools. Dourados of up to 30 cm total length (TL) stayed among the piraputangas of similar size hiding within the school and going to the periphery of the school before rushing against prey. The dourados exhibited colours similar to the piraputangas. They not only stayed longer among piraputangas (78% of the observation time), but also rushed against prey more often than when foraging alone (53 rushes/h against 14 rushes/h, respectively).

A interação nuclear-seguidor é um tipo particular de associação alimentar interespecífica que envolve uma espécie nuclear, que revolve ou vasculha o substrato, e espécies seguidoras, que acessam os itens alimentares disponibilizados pela atividade do nuclear. Neste estudo investigamos o efeito da estrutura do habitat sobre essa interação em um riacho no Planalto da Bodoquena, Centro-Oeste do Brasil. Foram registradas 272 interações durante 24 sessões de observação subaquática em áreas estruturalmente inalteradas e alteradas. A espécie nuclear dominante diferiu entre as áreas. Prochilodus lineatus foi a espécie nuclear dominante das áreas alteradas, enquanto que Leporinus macrocephalus foi a espécie nuclear dominante nas áreas inalteradas. A riqueza de espécies seguidoras por interação não diferiu entre as áreas, entretanto a abundância de seguidores foi maior nas áreas inalteradas do que nas alteradas. Essas diferenças parecem ser consequência das modificações na composição da comunidade e no comportamento alimentar das espécies nucleares que são, por sua vez, decorrentes das diferenças na composição do substrato e disponibilidade de alimento entre as áreas estruturalmente distintas.

Nuclear-follower interaction is a particular kind of interspecific foraging association that includes a nuclear species, which dig in or inspect the bottom, and follower species, which access the food items made available by the nuclear. In this study we examined the effect of habitat structure on nuclear-follower relationship in a stream of Bodoquena Plateau, Central-West Brazil. Foraging associations were registered while snorkeling in 24 observation sessions, totaling six hours in unaltered and altered sites. Overall, 272 nuclear-follower associations were registered, having four species acting as nuclear and seven as followers. The dominant nuclear species were different in each site. Prochilodus lineatus was the main nuclear species in the altered site and Leporinus macrocephalus in the unaltered site. The richness of follower species was similar between sites, however, follower species abundance per interaction were significantly higher in the unaltered site than in the altered site. These differences seem to be a consequence of the alterations in assemblage composition and feeding behavior of the nuclear species that presumably are affected by different substrate composition and food availability between the structurally distinct areas.

INTRODUÇÃO: Os peixes continentais do Brasil têm grande importância socioeconômica, tanto pelo potencial para a pesca esportiva, quanto para a pesca comercial e de subsistência, como é notado na bacia do Alto Rio Paraguai, particularmente, nos municípios da região do Pantanal. Ferimentos e envenenamentos em pescadores profissionais são comuns e pouco estudados. MÉTODOS: Foram entrevistados 100 pescadores profissionais, 50 em cada município, entre dezembro/2008 e outubro/2009. RESULTADOS: Todos relataram ter sofrido algum tipo de acidente, sendo estes causados por ferrões de peixes (78% dos acidentados) e mordidas de peixes, jacarés ou serpentes (22%), estes ocorridos em maioria nas mãos (46% dos casos) e pés (35% dos casos). A maioria dos pacientes apresentou sintomas leves. Os casos mais graves apresentavam infecções bacterianas e necessitaram de tratamento específico e tempo prolongado de recuperação, o que condicionou às vítimas prejuízos socioeconômicos. CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados deste estudo indicam que, no plano social, as condições estressantes do trabalho, a desatenção com medidas preventivas básicas e o descuido foram os fatores que mais contribuíram para os acidentes. Por outro lado, a capacidade de algumas espécies de envenenar ou de produzir traumas mecânicos e o emprego de primeiros socorros e tratamentos hospitalares ineficazes contribuíram para a grande morbidade e complicações em muitos casos. Os dados deste estudo são relevantes para as comunidades pesqueiras do Pantanal, uma vez que revelam altos índices de acidentes de trabalho, inexistência de noções de primeiros socorros ou prevenção dos acidentes e ausência de atendimento médico continuado junto a estas populações.

INTRODUCTION: The fishes of continental Brazil have socioeconomic importance due to their potential for sport fishing and commercial and subsistence uses, as seen in the Upper Paraguay River Basin, particularly in the municipalities of the Pantanal region, where it is the second largest economic activity. Injuries caused in professional fishermen are common and poorly studied, as in other regions of the country. METHODS: Data were obtained from questionnaires and interviews with 100 professional fishermen, 50 in each municipality, between December 2008 and October 2009. RESULTS: All the fishermen reported some kind of injury caused by fish stings (78% of injuries) and fish, alligator and snake bites (22%) on the hands (46% of cases) and feet (35% of cases). Most of the patients had mild symptoms. The most severe cases were associated with secondary bacterial infections and required specific treatment and prolonged recovery associated with social and economic losses. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study indicate that the stressful work conditions, inattention to basic preventive measures and carelessness were factors that contributed to accidents and that the toxicity and ability to inflict mechanical trauma of some aquatic species, plus the ineffective use of first aid and hospital treatment, contributed to the high morbidity and complications in many cases. Data from this study are relevant to the fishing communities of the Pantanal region, since they reveal high rates of accidents, lack of knowledge concerning first aid, initial treatment, injury prevention and lack of medical follow-up of the population.
