RESUMO Vários autores vêm se referindo nessas últimas décadas à ausência nas obras históricas de Celso Furtado de explicações mais elaboradas sobre as origens e a evolução inicial do setor manufatureiro da economia brasileira. Na tentativa de testar empiricamente a validade dessas afirmações, o artigo apresenta o resultado de uma revisão sistemática não apenas do famoso livro O crescimento econômico do Brasil, mas também de outros trabalhos do autor. A propósito, algumas conclusões bastante diferentes foram alcançadas. Essas conclusões não têm o objetivo de criticar afirmações anteriores, mas sim de sintetizar e caracterizar as ideias de Furtado sobre esse processo muito importante da história da economia de nosso país.

ABSTRACT Several authors have been referring these last decades to the absence in Celso Furtado’s historical works of any more elaborate explanations on the origins and initial evolution of the Brazilian economy’s manufacturing sector. In an attempt to test empirically the validity of these assertions, the article presents the result of systematic revision not only of the famous book on The Economic Growth of Brazil, but also of the Author’s other works. By its way, some quite different conclusions were reached. These conclusions don’t have the purpose of criticizing previous affirmations, rather intending to synthesize and characterize Furtado’s ideas on this very important process of our country’s economy history.

RESUMO Este artigo revisa as contribuições de Edith T. Penrose (1914-1996) às teorias do progresso técnico dentro da competição oligopolística. Baseia-se principalmente no capítulo VII de sua seminal Teoria do Crescimento da Empresa, publicada pela primeira vez em 1959.

ABSTRACT This paper reviews the contributions of Edith T. Penrose (1914-1996), to the theories of technical progress within oligopolistic competition. It is mainly based upon chapter VII of her seminal Theory of the Growth of the Firm, published for the first time in 1959.

Avaliação do desenvolvimento da produção brasileira de cana, açúcar e álcool nos últimos 50 anos, bem como das mudanças de sua distribuição espacial após a Segunda Guerra. Retrospecto cronológico dos principais problemas da agroindústria canavieira cobrindo quatro períodos seqüenciais (1939-1949), tentativas de reinserção do Brasil nos mercados açucareiros internacionais (1950-1968), tendências de concentração e de mordernização setoriais (1969-1974), os desvios do açúcar para o álcool e vice versa. O artigo termina com algumas breves considerações sobre a crise da oferta de álcool em 1990.

Assessmente of the evolution of Brazil's sugarcane, sugar and ethanol production durng the alst fifty years, as well as of its slnfting spatial pattern after the last World War., Chronological account ofthe industry's main problems covering four sequential periods: World War II and its consequences (1939-1949), attempts of reinsertion in the international sugar markets (1950-1968), trends of sectorial concentration and modernization (1969-1974), and dislocations from sugar to ethanol and vice versa (1975-1989). The article ends with some succint considerations on the ethanol supply crisis of 1990.

ABSTRACT State intervention in the economy and governmental public policies are usually regarded in peripherical economies as one of the main factors in the development process. According to most historians, the period of the Estado Novo had a great importance in the recent evolution of the Brazilian economy, representing a turning point from the primary-export system to the present one, based on the industrial sector and the internal market. The article intends to test these hypotheses in quantitative and qualitative terms, by comparing the evolution of Brazilian public finance between 1938 and 1945 with the previous and the ulterior eight-year periods (from 1930 to 1937, and from 1946 to 1953).

RESUMO A intervenção do Estado na economia e as políticas públicas governamentais costumam ser vistas nas economias periféricas como um dos principais fatores do processo de desenvolvimento. Segundo a maioria dos historiadores, o período do Estado Novo teve grande importância na evolução recente da economia brasileira, representando uma virada do sistema primário-exportador para o atual, baseado no setor industrial e no mercado interno. O artigo pretende testar essas hipóteses em termos quantitativos e qualitativos, comparando a evolução das finanças públicas brasileiras entre 1938 e 1945 com os oito anos anteriores e posteriores (de 1930 a 1937 e de 1946 a 1953).
