Abstract The main objective of this paper is to show the role played by the selection and creation of new wheat varieties in the process of constitution and territorial expansion of the US wheat production model from the 17th century until the end of the 19th century. The article suggests that these biological innovations allowed to increase the production and territorial extension of the wheat, they were key in the development of a commercial production on a large scale and contributed key empirical and methodological data for the constitution and institutionalization of a scientific agriculture at the beginning of the 20th century. These innovations were the result of very different efforts and experiences, from those personal, local or community accumulated over generations, to those based on the scientific, mathematical and methodological literature of the time.

Resumen El objetivo principal de este trabajo es mostrar el papel que jugaron la selección y creación de nuevas variedades de trigo en el proceso de constitución y expansión territorial del modelo de producción de trigo estadounidense desde el siglo XVII hasta finales del XIX. El artículo sugiere que estas innovaciones biológicas permitieron aumentar la producción y extensión territorial triguera, fueron claves en el desarrollo de una producción comercial a gran escala y aportaron datos empíricos y metodológicos claves para la constitución e institucionalización de una agricultura científica a inicios del siglo XX. Dichas innovaciones fueron resultado de esfuerzos y experiencias muy dispares, desde aquellos personales, locales o comunitarios acumulados durante generaciones, hasta los basados en la literatura, matemática y metodológica científica de la epoca.

Abstract The main goal of this paper consists on showing in what ways certain complex symptom clusters are able to acquire the status of disease, syndromes or clinical entities within a biomedical discourse which is part of an interrelation of different processes in which not only biological, but also historical, political and social factors get to be involved. In such cases, it is possible to identify a discursive mechanism that consists, on the one hand, on relying on assumptions and hypotheses that usually locate the origin of these clinical entities in the nervous system while sociocultural factors are included in the elucidations of their hypothetical causes on the other. As illustrative concrete cases, we have decided to analyze two cases of contested illness: neurasthenia and fibromyalgia, controversial diagnostic labels that have shared not only clinical similarities and coincidences but also contextual ones.

Resumen El objetivo principal del presente artículo es mostrar de qué forma ciertos conjuntos de síntomas complejos adquieren un estatuto de enfermedad, síndrome o entidad clínica, a partir de un discurso biomédico que es, a su vez, producto de la interrelación de procesos en los que intervienen factores no sólo de orden biológico, sino también histórico, político y social. En tales casos, es posible identificar un mecanismo discursivo que consiste, por un lado, en recurrir a hipótesis que ubican el origen de dichos padecimientos en el sistema nervioso, al mismo tiempo que se incluyen factores de orden sociocultural en las elucidaciones sobre sus causas hipotéticas. A modo de ejemplo, y para tal fin, se ha tomado el estudio de dos casos concretos: la neurastenia y la fibromialgia, etiquetas diagnósticas controversiales que han compartido no sólo una serie de similitudes y coincidencias clínicas sino también contextuales.

The aim of this article is to uncover the main cognitive and epistemological values that influenced Warren Weaver in starting the Experimental Biology Program, a program carried out from the time that he became president of the Natural Sciences Division of the Rockefeller Foundation, and which significantly marked and conditioned the subsequent development of biological research. To this end, we first describe the arrival of Warren Weaver at the Rockefeller Foundation, and the reasons for which the Board of this Foundation, between 1932 and 1933, decided to prioritize biomedical research, and the manner in which they did so. Then, secondly, in the largest and most important part of the article, we will present some of the most significant elements of Weaver's epistemological and cognitive perspective. Finally, we will show how this perspective, developed in connection with the Experimental Biology Program, interacted with the reductionist view of biology to which the program seemed to point.

El objetivo de este trabajo es poner al descubierto los principales valores cognitivos y epistemológicos desde los que Warren Weaver puso en marcha el Programa de Biología Experimental, un programa que llevado a cabo desde la presidencia de la división de ciencias naturales de la Fundación Rockefeller, marcó y condicionó en buena medida el posterior desarrollo de la investigación biológica. Para tal fin se mostrará, en primer lugar, cómo fue la llegada de Weaver a la Fundación Rockefeller, así como las razones bajo las cuáles el consejo de esa institución decidió entre 1932 y 1933 dar prioridad a las investigaciones biomédicas, y la manera por la cual lo hicieron. En un segundo momento, el más extenso e importante, veremos algunos de los elementos más significativos de la perspectiva epistemológica y cognoscitiva de de Weaver. Finalizaremos viendo cómo esa perspectiva, desarrollada en conexión con el Programa de Biología Experimental, inter-actuó con la visión reduccionista de la biología a la que el programa parecía apuntar.
