Resumo Descrições da anatomia do carvão são indispensáveis para a identificação de fragmentos de carvão desconhecidos em diferentes contextos. Elas formam uma parte integral dos estudos antracológicos, e podem fornecer informações cruciais para pesquisadoras e pesquisadores de diversas especialidades. O presente artigo analisa a anatomia do carvão de 21 espécies de duas subfamílias (Melastomatoideae e Olisbeoideae) de Melastomataceae nativas do Brasil. Destas, seis espécies são descritas pela primeira vez. Os resultados apontam para uma distinção clara entre os tipos anatômicos dentro das duas subfamílias, além de uma relativa homogeneidade em características anatômicas dentro de Melastomatoideae. Abstract Charcoal anatomy descriptions are paramount for identifying unknown charcoal specimens in different contexts. They form an integral part of anthracological studies, which can provide crucial information for researchers of different expertise. This paper describes the charcoal anatomy of 21 species in two subfamilies (Melastomatoideae and Olisbeoideae) of Melastomataceae native to Brazil. From those, six species are here described for the first time. The results point to clear distinction between the anatomical types inside the two studied subfamilies along with a relative homogeneity in anatomical features inside Melastomatoideae. Abstract Anthracology is the identification of charcoal remains through wood anatomy. Paleoecological and paleoethnobotanical evidence from anthracological studies provides information on past environments as well as the fuel economy and use of plants by those living in ancient societies. Historical ecology and forest conservation can also accrue from findings in anthracological studies. Charcoal identification must rely on adequate reference material, in particular reference collections and descriptions of charcoal anatomy. This paper presents charcoal anatomy descriptions of fifteen Brazilian native species that occur in the Atlantic Forest and the Amazon Rainforest. The charcoal anatomy of six of these species is here described for the first time. Samples were analyzed under a reflected light microscope; the descriptions followed the procedures and terminology recommended by the International Association of Wood Anatomists. Increased knowledge of the charcoal and wood anatomy of native tropical species may improve taxonomic identification, thereby increasing accordingly the amount and quality of data for sociocultural inferences about past societies. In addition, it contributes to a better knowledge of the native flora, which helps to prevent deforestation and to drive more sustainable charcoal production chains.

RESUMO Estudos antracológicos têm tido avanço significativo nos trópicos nas últimas décadas. As bases teóricas e metodológicas da disciplina estão bem estabelecidas, entretanto, existe ainda uma forte demanda por material comparativo de referência visando melhorar a acurácia nas determinações taxonômicas, tanto em estudos paleoecológicos e paleoetnobotânicos como para contribuir com o controle da produção ilegal de carvão vegetal. Este trabalho apresenta descrições da anatomia do lenho carbonizado de 11 espécies de Anacardiaceae, em seis gêneros nativos do Brasil (Anacardium occidentale, Anacardium parvifolium, Astronium graveolens, Astronium lecointei, Lithrea molleoides, Schinus terebenthifolius, Spondias mombin, Spondias purpurea, Spondias tuberosa, Tapirira guianensis e Tapirira obtusa). Elas são caracterizadas por vasos de arranjo difuso, solitários e múltiplos, algumas vezes com tiloses e espessamentos espiralados; placas de perfuração simples, pontoações intervasculares alternas, pontoações raio-vasculares maiores que as intervasculares; raios heterocelulares, podendo apresentar canais radiais e cristais; fibras septadas com pontoações simples ou aréolas reduzidas. Os resultados obtidos são similares a descrições prévias de anatomia da madeira das mesmas espécies ou gêneros. Ainda assim, a identificação de carvões é muito mais eficiente quando as amostras desconhecidas são comparadas a equivalentes atuais carbonizados, ao invés de lâminas finas.

ABSTRACT Anthracological studies are firmly advancing in the tropics during the last decades. The theoretical and methodological bases of the discipline are well established. Yet, there is a strong demand for comparative reference material, seeking for an improvement in the precision of taxonomic determination, both in palaeoecological and palaeoethnobotanical studies and to help preventing illegal charcoal production. This work presents descriptions of charcoal anatomy of eleven Anacardiaceae species from six genera native to Brazil (Anacardium occidentale, Anacardium parvifolium, Astronium graveolens, Astronium lecointei, Lithrea molleoides, Schinus terebenthifolius, Spondias mombin, Spondias purpurea, Spondias tuberosa, Tapirira guianensis, and Tapirira obtusa). They are characterized by diffuse-porous wood, vessels solitary and in multiples, tyloses and spiral thickenings sometimes present; simple perforation plates, alternate intervessel pits, rounded vessel-ray pits with much reduced borders to apparently simple; parenchyma paratracheal scanty to vasicentric; heterocellular rays, some with radial canals and crystals; septate fibres with simple pits. These results are quite similar to previous wood anatomical descriptions of the same species or genera. Yet, charcoal identification is more effective when unknown samples are compared to charred extant equivalents, instead of to wood slides.

A recuperação de macrovestígios vegetais para análises arqueobotânicas tem demandado a adaptação da metodologia empregada aos diferentes tipos de ambientes encontrados nos sítios arqueológicos ao redor do mundo. Na Amazônia, sedimentos argilosos com elevado potencial de agregação das partículas frequentemente dificultam a recuperação dos remanescentes orgânicos e inorgânicos. Esta nota apresenta a metodologia empregada no tratamento de amostras de sedimento provenientes de sítios arqueológicos localizados na Amazônia central, destacando o uso de defloculantes, associados à técnica de flotação. A minimização do viés amostral na recuperação de macrovestígios vegetais permitirá melhores resultados de análises arqueobotânicas.

The recovery of plant macroremains for archaeobotanical analyses requires the adaptation of the methods to different environments found in archaeological sites around the world. In the Amazon, clayey soils frequently complicate the recovery of organic and inorganic remains due to the propensity of clay particles to aggregate. This note presents the methodology employed in the treatment of sediment samples from archaeological sites in the central Amazon, highlighting the use of deflocculants associated to flotation. Minimizing the sample biases during the recovery of plant macroremains will allow for better and more accurate results from archaeobotanical analyses.

Este artigo apresenta datações inesperadamente antigas para umassentamento Tupiguarani no sudeste do Brasil. Uma datação radiocarbono de 1740 ± 90 anos AP (1820-1390 cal anos AP) já existia para o sítio de Morro Grande, situado no município de Araruama, na costa sudeste do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Duas novas datações, obtidas de amostras de carvão, são apresentadas neste trabalho. A data de 2920 ± 70 anos AP (3220-2790 cal anos AP) foi obtida a partir de uma fogueira de uso específico, provavelmente destinada a queimar cerâmica; uma outra provém de uma fogueira funerária do mesmo setor arqueológico, datada em 2600 ± 160 anos AP (3000-2150 cal anos AP). As duas medidas foram feitas independentemente, em laboratórios diferentes, o que reforça sua validade. Estas datações mostram que o momento de chegada de populações Tupiguarani à costa brasileira ocorreu muito antes do que se imaginava. Elas podem ter importantes implicações para as hipóteses sobre a origem e a dispersão dessas populaçõesa partir da Amazônia, corroborando a hipótese de autores recentes que consideram que a expansão Tupi deve ter começado bem antes de 2000 anos AP.

This paper presents unexpectedly early dates for a Tupiguarani settlement in Southeastern Brazil. One radiocarbon dating of 1740 ± 90 yr BP (1820-1390 cal yr BP) was already available for the Morro Grande site (Araruama, southeastern coast of Rio de Janeiro State). Two new dates, obtained from charcoal samples, are reported here. An age of 2920 ± 70 yr BP (3220-2790 cal yr BP) was obtained from a specialized hearth, probably used for cooking ceramics; a funerary hearth at the same archaeological locus was dated at 2600 ± 160 yr BP (3000-2150 cal yr BP). Both measurements were made independently, indifferent laboratories, arguing for their validity. These results considerably age the arrival time of Tupiguarani populations to the coastal region of Southeastern Brazil. They may have important implications to the hypotheses about the origin and dispersion of these populations from Amazonia, supporting the claim of recent authors who consider that their expansion must have begun well before 2000 yrs BP.
