ABSTRACT Objective: the purpose of this paper is to explore the effect of information transparency on the selection of a socially responsible partner, taking into account the role played by signal send by the location of the partner and stakeholder pressure. Theoretical approach: this study is based on the premise that information transparency is a central element in the buyer-supply relationship and can play a key role in the selection of a socially responsible partner. The location of a partner can also affect the feeling of transparency if the country where the partner is located is not recognized for its reputation. The stakeholder pressure for socially responsible practices can also affect the decision to choose a business partner. Methods: we employed a 2 x 2 full-factorial between-subjects, scenario-based role-playing experiment. In Study 1, we simulated a situation in which the buyer is asked about their likelihood of selecting a socially responsible supplier, while in Study 2 we simulated a situation in which the socially responsible supplier is asked about the likelihood of selling products to a buyer. Results: the results indicate that information transparency affects the decision to select socially responsible partners. Stakeholder pressure partially moderates this relationship, while location does not moderate this relationship in either study. Conclusion: we conclude that information transparency throughout the supply chain is a relevant factor in negotiations within a socially responsible context. Information transparency is a key aspect for both the buyer and the supplier when selecting a socially responsible partner.

RESUMO Objetivo: o objetivo deste artigo é explorar o efeito da transparência da informação na seleção de um parceiro socialmente responsável, levando em consideração o papel desempenhado pelo sinal enviado pela localização do parceiro e a pressão dos stakeholders. Marco teórico: Este estudo parte da premissa de que a transparência da informação é um elemento central na relação comprador-fornecedor e pode desempenhar um papel-chave na seleção de um parceiro socialmente responsável. A localização de um parceiro também pode afetar o sentimento de transparência se o país onde o parceiro está localizado não for reconhecido por sua reputação. A pressão dos stakeholders por práticas socialmente responsáveis também pode afetar a decisão de escolha de um parceiro de negócios. Métodos: empregamos um experimento baseado em cenários e fatorial 2 x 2 entre participantes. No Estudo 1, simulamos uma situação em que o comprador é questionado sobre sua probabilidade de selecionar um fornecedor socialmente responsável, enquanto no Estudo 2 simulamos uma situação em que o fornecedor socialmente responsável é questionado sobre a probabilidade de vender produtos a um comprador. Resultados: os resultados indicam que a transparência da informação afeta a decisão de selecionar parceiros socialmente responsáveis. A pressão dos stakeholders modera parcialmente essa relação, enquanto a localização não modera essa relação em nenhum dos estudos. Conclusão: a divulgação de informações em toda a cadeia de suprimentos é um fator relevante nas negociações em um contexto socialmente responsável. A transparência das informações é um aspecto fundamental para o comprador e fornecedor na seleção de um parceiro socialmente responsável.

ABSTRACT The case portrays the dilemma of Rafaella Scorsatto, operations manager at the Sumaré unit, who needs to propose an operational plan to win the concession for water supply and sewage collection and treatment in the municipality of Maceió. Rafaella managed the process of operational improvement in the Sumaré unit when the company took over the concession in 2015. Despite a troubled start, in less than six years, the Sumaré unit has become a reference in operational excellence within BRK Ambiental. This achievement was possible because, in three different moments in time, the unit was able to understand the main demands of users and public authorities and align its operational resources with them. The case was designed to show students the elements of operations strategy (market demands and operational decisions), the need for alignment between these elements, and the importance of adapting operational practices as new demands arise. To achieve this purpose, the case describes the latent demands of each phase and the operational practices adopted to meet them. By understanding the need for alignment and how each operational decision helps in delivering market demands, students acquire conditions to help Rafaella propose a plan with the potential to win the concession in Maceió. The use of this case is recommended in operations strategy undergraduate and graduate courses, especially at the beginning of the course.

RESUMO O caso retrata o dilema de Rafaella Scorsatto, gerente de operações da unidade de Sumaré da BRK Ambiental, que precisa propor um plano operacional para ganhar a concessão dos serviços de abastecimento de água e coleta e tratamento de esgoto do município de Maceió. Rafaella coordenou o processo de melhoria da gestão operacional que ocorreu no município de Sumaré, SP, quando a empresa assumiu a concessão em 2015. Apesar de um início conturbado, em menos de seis anos, Sumaré tornou-se uma referência em gestão operacional dentro da BRK Ambiental. Isso porque, em três diferentes fases, a unidade foi capaz de entender as principais demandas dos usuários e poder público e alinhar seus recursos operacionais com elas. O caso foi pensado para mostrar para os alunos elementos da estratégia de operações (demandas de mercado e decisões operacionais), a necessidade de alinhamento entre esses elementos e a importância da adaptação das práticas operacionais à medida que novas demandas surgem. Para isso, o caso descreve as demandas latentes de cada fase e as medidas operacionais adotadas para atendê-las. Ao entender a necessidade de alinhamento e como cada medida operacional auxilia a entrega das demandas de mercado, o aluno adquire condições para ajudar Rafaella a propor um plano com potencial de ganhar a concessão do município de Maceió. O uso deste caso é recomendado em cursos de graduação e pós-graduação de Estratégia de Operações, principalmente no início do curso.

ABSTRACT Although remanufacturing has attracted the attention of academia and practitioners, there is a lack of empirical studies regarding servitization strategy in a remanufacturing context. We aim to address this gap by examining how servitization may influence the likelihood of purchasing a remanufactured battery for an electric vehicle. We also test if price increases the purchase likelihood, even when additional services are provided as part of the service package. We conducted a 2 x 2, full factorial, between-subjects experiment. The results reveal that the offer of additional service influences the effect that price has on the purchase likelihood. Our study contributes to fill the gap in the literature by identifying under which conditions low price is not a significant predictor of the likelihood of purchasing a remanufactured EV battery. Our findings may help managers develop strategies to improve the sales of remanufactured products, especially considering the use of additional services. New studies can benefit from our findings by focusing on how additional services can improve perceived value and reduce the perceived risk of remanufacturing. Finally, we conclude that servitization is a promising strategy for increasing the perceived value and the purchasing intentions of remanufactured products.

RESUMO Esta pesquisa desenvolve um modelo teórico que relacionou as ações de participação dos clientes em serviços intensivos em conhecimento (SIC), as ações dos prestadores de serviço para estimular o envolvimento dos clientes e a eficácia dos serviços. Cinco hipóteses foram testadas por meio de equações estruturais, e os dados foram coletados por meio do levantamento de uma amostra de 106 usuários de serviços de fisioterapia, personal trainers, pilates e reeducação postural global. Os resultados mostram que não basta educar clientes; prestadores precisam ter empatia e criar um vínculo emocional com eles. Adicionalmente, a educação dos clientes e a empatia emocional influenciam de maneira diferenciada o fornecimento de feedback e até que ponto os clientes seguem as instruções. Este estudo contribui para a literatura, ao promover uma visão holística sobre os fatores que influenciam a participação do cliente e sua eficácia em SIC

ABSTRACT This study develops a theoretical model that relates customer participation in knowledge-intensive services (KIS), the actions of service providers to encourage customer engagement and the effectiveness of services. Five hypotheses were tested using structural equations, and data were collected by surveying a sample of 106 users of physical therapy, personal training, Pilates and global postural reeducation services. The results show that educating customers is not enough; service providers need to empathize and create an emotional bond with them. Additionally, customer education and emotional empathy have different effects on customer feedback and the extent to which customers follow instructions. This study contributes to the literature by promoting a holistic view of the factors that influence customer participation and its effectiveness in KIS.

RESUMEN Esta investigación desarrolla un modelo teórico que relaciona las acciones de participación del cliente en los servicios intensivos en conocimiento (SIC), las acciones de los proveedores de servicios para estimular la participación del cliente y la efectividad de los servicios. Se probaron cinco hipótesis utilizando ecuaciones estructurales, y los datos se recolectaron encuestando a una muestra de 106 usuarios de servicios de fisioterapia, entrenadores personales, pilates y reeducación postural global. Los resultados muestran que educar a los clientes no es suficiente; los proveedores deben sentir empatía y crear un vínculo emocional con ellos. Además, la educación del cliente y la empatía emocional influyen de manera diferente en la entrega de comentarios y en el grado en que los clientes siguen las instrucciones. Este estudio contribuye a la literatura, al promover una visión holística sobre los factores que influyen en la participación del cliente y su efectividad en la SIC.

Firm performance is a relevant construct in strategic management research and frequently used as a dependent variable. Despite this relevance, there is hardly a consensus about its definition, dimensionality and measurement, what limits advances in research and understanding of the concept. This article proposes and tests a measurement model for firm performance, based on subjective indicators. The model is grounded in stakeholder theory and a review of empirical articles. Confirmatory Factor Analyses, using data from 116 Brazilian senior managers, were used to test its fit and psychometric properties. The final model had six first-order dimensions: profitability, growth, customer satisfaction, employee satisfaction, social performance, and environmental performance. A second-order financial performance construct, influencing growth and profitability, correlated with the first-order intercorrelated, non-financial dimensions. Results suggest dimensions cannot be used interchangeably, since they represent different aspects of firm performance, and corroborate the idea that stakeholders have different demands that need to be managed independently. Researchers and practitioners may use the model to fully treat performance in empirical studies and to understand the impact of strategies on multiple performance facets.
