Resumo Este estudo avaliou o efeito de um novo método para aplicação do sistema adesivo na resistência de união entre pino de fibra e dentina radicular usando dois sistemas adesivos. Os canais de sessenta incisivos bovinos foram preparados e obturados. As raízes foram divididas em seis grupos (n=10) de acordo com o sistema adesivo (Clearfil SE - CSE e Single Bond Universal - SBU) e com a estratégia de aplicação (microbrush - MB, escova rotatória - RB e inserto ultrassônico - US). Os pinos de fibra foram cimentados utilizando cimento resinoso (RelyX ARC). As raízes foram seccionadas perpendicularmente ao seu longo eixo e três fatias foram obtidas. Previamente ao teste de push-out, foi realizada microscopia de varredura confocal a laser para ilustrar a adaptação interfacial do cimento às paredes do canal radicular. Os padrões de falha foram analisados com magnificação de 40x. O teste de Shapiro-Wilk indicou distribuição normal dos dados. Os valores de resistência de união foram comparados usando o teste ANOVA de uma via e post hoc de Tukey. As diferenças entre os sistemas adesivos em cada terço e de acordo com cada protocolo foram analisadas pelo teste T de Student. O nível de significância foi de 5%. CSE aplicado com RB apresentou maiores valores médios de resistência de união do que quando aplicado com MB (técnica convencional) (P<0,05). Aplicação com US apresentou valores intermediários de resistência de união para o CSE (P>0,05). A aplicação do SBU utilizando RB gerou maiores valores médios de resistência de união comparados com MB e US (P<0,05). Falhas adesivas foram predominantes (65,5%). Abstract This study evaluated a new method of adhesive system application on the bond strength between fiber post and root dentin using two adhesive systems. The canals of sixty bovine incisors were prepared and obturated. The roots were divided into six groups (n=10) according to the adhesive system (Clearfil SE - CSE and Single Bond Universal - SBU) and the application strategy (microbrush - MB; rotary brush - RB; and ultrasonic tip - US). The glass fiber posts were cemented with resin cement (RelyX ARC). The roots were sectioned perpendicularly to their long axis, and three slices per root were obtained. Previously to the push-out test, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) was performed to illustrate the interfacial adaptation of the cement to the root canal walls. Failure patterns were analyzed with 40x magnification. Shapiro-Wilk indicated a normal distribution of the data. The bond strength values were compared using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's tests. Student's T test analyzed the differences between the adhesive systems within each third and protocol. A significance level of 5% was used. CSE with RB showed higher mean bond strength values compared to MB (conventional technique) (P < 0.05). US application resulted in intermediate bond strength values for CSE (P > 0.05). The application of SBU using RB generated higher mean bond strength values compared to MB and US (P < 0.05). Adhesive failures were predominant (65.5%). Resumo Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a influência da ativação ultrassônica (AU) nas propriedades físico-químicas de cimentos de silicato de cálcio. Nove condições experimentais foram criadas com base nos cimentos de silicato de cálcio (Bio-C Sealer, Sealer Plus BC e Bio Root RCS) e na ativação ultrassônica (sem ativação [SA], 10 segundos e 20 segundos). Os grupos experimentais foram BC-SA, BC-10, BC-20, SPBC-SA, SPBC-10, SPBC-20, BR-SA, BR-10 e BR-20. A ativação foi realizada com um inserto ultrassônico 20/.01. O molde para a análise físico-química foi preenchido e avaliado de acordo com a especificação ANSI/ADA nº. 57: tempo de presa inicial e final, escoamento, radiopacidade e solubilidade. Também foram realizados testes para avaliação de pH e liberação de íons cálcio com períodos experimentais de 1, 24, 72 e 168 horas com pHmetro e espectrofotômetro colorimétrico. Os dados foram analisados por análise de variância one-way e testes post-hoc de Tukey. O nível de significância foi estabelecido em 5%. O tempo de AU aumentou progressivamente o tempo de presa inicial para todos os cimentos de silicato de cálcio (p < 0,05). Vinte segundos de AU aumentaram os valores médios de escoamento de Sealer Plus BC e Bio-C Sealer em comparação com SA (P < 0,05). A AU não influenciou a radiopacidade e a solubilidade dos cimentos testados (P > 0,05). AU por 20 segundos aumentou os níveis de pH e a liberação de íons cálcio de Sealer Plus BC e Bio-C Sealer em 168h (P < 0,05). AU por vinte segundos interfere em algumas propriedades físico-químicas dos cimentos de silicato de cálcio.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the influence of ultrasonic activation (UA) on the physicochemical properties of hydraulic calcium silicate-based sealers. Nine experimental conditions were created based on the hydraulic calcium silicate-based sealers (Bio-C Sealer, Sealer Plus BC and Bio Root RCS) and the ultrasonic activation (no activation [NA], 10 seconds, and 20 seconds). Then the experimental groups were BC-NA, BC-10, BC-20, SPBC-NA, SPBC-10, SPBC-20, BR-NA, BR-10, and BR-20. Activation was performed with an ultrasonic insert 20/.01. The mold for the physicochemical analysis was filled and evaluated according to the ANSI/ADA specification nº. 57: initial and final setting time, flow, radiopacity and solubility. Tests were also performed to evaluate pH and calcium ion release with experimental periods of 1, 24, 72, and 168 hours with a pH meter and colorimetric spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and post-hoc Tukey tests. The significance level was set at 5%. The time of UA progressively delayed the initial setting time for all hydraulic calcium silicate-based sealers (p < 0.05). Twenty seconds of UA increased the mean flow values of Sealer Plus BC and Bio-C Sealer compared to NA (p < 0.05). UA did not influence the radiopacity and solubility of the tested sealers (p > 0.05). UA for 20 seconds enhanced the pH levels and the calcium ion release of Sealer Plus BC and Bio-C Sealer at 168h (p < 0.05). UA for twenty seconds interferes with some physicochemical properties of hydraulic calcium silicate-based sealers.

Resumo Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a influência de cimentos à base de silicato de cálcio na resistência de união de pinos de fibra utilizando cimentos resinosos convencionais e autoadesivos. Sessenta dentes humanos monorradiculares foram selecionados. Os canais foram preparados um instrumento reciprocante 40.06. As raízes foram distribuídas aleatoriamente em seis grupos (n = 10) de acordo com as estratégias de obturação do canal e cimentação dos pinos de fibra: AH Plus/RelyX ARC; AH Plus/RelyX U200; Bio C Sealer/RelyX ARC; Bio C Sealer/RealyX U200; Sealer Plus BC/RelyX ARC; e Sealer Plus BC/RelyX U200. As raízes foram seccionadas transversalmente e foi obtido um espécime por terço. O teste de push-out foi realizado em uma velocidade de 1mm/min. Os padrões de falha foram descritos após avaliação em estereomicroscópio com aumento de 10×. A resistência de união foi calculada e analisada por ANOVA e teste de Tukey. AH Plus não influenciou na resistência de união dos pinos de fibra cimentados com cimento resinoso convencional (RelyX ARC) ou autoadesivo (RelyX U200) (p > 0,05). Os menores valores de resistência de união foram obtidos quando os cimentos à base de silicato de cálcio foram associados ao cimento resinoso convencional (Bio C Sealer/RelyX ARC e Sealer Plus BC/RelyX ARC) (p < 0,05). Com exceção do Sealer Plus BC/RelyX ARC, todos os grupos apresentaram menor resistência de união na porção apical em comparação com a porção cervical do pino (p < 0,05). Falhas adesivas entre cimento e pino e cimento e dentina foram predominantes (55,3%). Cimentos a base de silicato de cálcio diminuíram a resistência de união de pinos de fibra cimentados com cimento resinoso convencional.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the influence of calcium silicate-based sealers on the bond strength of fiber posts using conventional and self-adhesive resin cement. Sixty single-rooted teeth were selected. The canals were prepared with a reciprocating instrument 40.06. The roots were randomly distributed in six groups (n = 10) according to the strategies for root canal filling and fiber posts cementation: AH Plus/RelyX ARC; AH Plus/RelyX U200; Bio C Sealer/RelyX ARC; Bio C Sealer/RealyX U200; Sealer Plus BC/RelyX ARC; and Sealer Plus BC/RelyX U200. The roots were transversally sectioned, and one slice per post-third was obtained. The push-out test was performed at a crosshead speed of 1mm/min. The failure patterns were described after assessment with a stereomicroscope with a 10× magnification. Bond strength was calculated and analyzed using the ANOVA and Tukey test. AH Plus did not influence the bond strength of fiber posts cemented with conventional (RelyX ARC) or with self-adhesive resin cement (RelyX U200). The lowest bond strength values were obtained when calcium silicate-based sealers were associated with conventional resin cement (Bio C Sealer/RelyX ARC and Sealer Plus BC/RelyX ARC). Except for Sealer Plus BC/RelyX ARC, all groups presented lower bond strength at the apical portion compared to the cervical portion of the post. Adhesive failures between cement and post and cement and dentin were predominant (55.3%). Calcium silicate-based sealers decreased the bond strength of fiber posts cemented with conventional resin cement.

Abstract: Sixty moderately curved canals of mandibular molars classified as Vertucci’s type IV canal configuration were selected by micro-CT 1174. The teeth were divided into two groups according to the kinematics used, whether reciprocating or rotary motion (n=30, totaling 60 mesial root canals). The instruments used to perform the glide path procedures had identical features (0.15 mm of tip size, 0.04 mm/mm taper, thermal treatment, and square cross-section), but differed in the direction of the cutting blade. The duration of the procedure and the absolute and percentage frequency of the instruments to reach the full working length were recorded. The torsional test (3630-1; 1992) was performed on both used and unused instruments, to evaluate a possible reduction in the torsional resistance when using the glide path procedure. Statistical analysis was performed using the unpaired t-test and the chi-square test, and the level of significance was set at 5%. The type of kinematics used affected the duration of glide path procedures, and the reciprocating motion seemed to induce less torsional stress during glide path procedures.

Resumo Os objetivos deste estudo foram avaliar as propriedades físicas e químicas, citototoxidade e penetração tubular de uma nova medicação à base de silicato de cálcio. Para o teste de pH, e liberação de íons cálcio (1, 24, 72 e 168 h) foi usado medidor de pH e espectofotômetro colorimétrico, respectivamente. Avaliação da radiopacidade, seguiu a ISO 6876:2012). A citotoxicidade foi avaliada pela porcentagem de células viáveis usando o ensaio MTT. Imagens ilustrativas de penetração tubular foram obtidas usando microscopia confocal de varredura a laser (CLSM). Os dados de pH e liberação de cálcio foram analisados através do teste de Análise de Variância de duas vias e teste de Tukey. A radiopacidade foi avaliada usando o teste T de Student. Para a citotoxicidade foi empregada a Análise de Variância de uma via e teste de Tukey. Ambos os materiais apresentaram pH alcalino em todos os tempos experimentais. Os valores de pH da pasta de hidróxido de cálcio foram superiores à pasta biocerâmica em 1, 24 e 72 h (p<0,05). A liberação de cálcio da pasta biocerâmica foi inferior à pasta de hidróxido de cálcio apenas em 24 h (p<0,05). Bio-C Temp foi mais radiopaco que o Ultracal XS (p<0,05). A pasta biocerâmica apresentou efeito citotóxico dependente da dose e do tempo de exposição. Imagens de CLSM mostraram ausência de penetração intratubular para ambas as pastas. A nova medicação à base de silicato de cálcio apresentou pH alcalino, alta liberação de cálcio e boa radiopacidade. Bio C Temp apresentou um efeito citotóxico dependente da dose e do tempo de exposição e ausência de penetração tubular.

Abstract The aims of this study were to evaluate the physical and chemical properties, cytotoxicity and dentinal tubule penetration of a new calcium silicate-based root canal dressing. For pH and calcium ion release evaluation (1, 24, 72 and 168 h) were used a pH meter and colorimetric spectrophotometer, respectively. Radiopacity evaluation followed the ISO 6876:2012. Cytotoxicity was evaluated by the percentage of cell viability using MTT assay. Illustrative images of dentinal tubule penetration were obtained using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Data from pH and calcium ion release were statistically analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and Tukey test. Radiopacity was analyzed using the Student t-test. The statistical tests for cytotoxicity results were the one-way analysis of variance and Tukey test. Both materials showed alkaline pH in all experimental times. The pH values for calcium hydroxide paste were higher than bioceramic paste at 1, 24, and 72 h (p<0.05). The calcium ion release of bioceramic was lower than the calcium hydroxide paste only at 24 h (p<0.05). The bioceramic was more radiopaque than the calcium hydroxide paste (p<0.05). Bioceramic paste presented a dose and time-dependent cytotoxic effect after MTT assay. CLSM images showed absence of tubule penetration for both pastes. The new calcium silicate-based canal dressing presented alkaline pH, high calcium release, and acceptable radiopacity. Bio C Temp showed a dose and time-dependent cytotoxic and absence of dentinal tubule penetration.

Resumo Este estudo objetivou avaliar a penetração nos túbulos dentinários de um novo cimento biocerâmico utilizando microscopia confocal de varredura a laser (MCVL). Um fluoróforo específico (Fluo-3) foi misturado com o cimento. Quarenta raízes distovestibulares de molares superiores foram selecionados e o preparo do canal radicular foi realizado com instrumentos Wave One Gold #35.06. As raízes foram divididas randomicamente em quatro grupos de acordo com os procedimentos obturadores: Bioceramic/Lentulo: cimento biocerâmico (Sealer Plus BC); Bioceramic/EasyClean: três ativações do cimento com instrumento Easy Clean (3 x 20 s); Bioceramic/Irrisonic: ativação ultrassônica do cimento por 30 s e AHplus/Lentulo: cimento à base de resina epóxica (AH Plus) foi utilizado com o mesmo protocolo que o grupo Bioceramic/Lentulo. Após 72h, os espécimes foram seccionados transversalmente em 2 e 7 mm do ápice radicular e analisados com MCVL. A área de penetração nos túbulos dentinários foi mensurada com Adobe Photoshop CC2018. O teste de Kruskal Wallis e T de Wilcoxon foram realizados. Os resultados de penetração foram similares para ambos os cimentos independentemente de qual técnica foi utilizada para ativá-los no interior do canal radicular (p>0,05). É razoável concluir que a penetração de cimentos biocerâmicos e à base de resina epóxica ocorreram de forma pouco expressiva. O tipo de ativação do cimento biocerâmcio não afeta sua penetrabilidade nos túbulos dentinários. Fluo 3 deve ser recomendado como o fluoróforo para avaliar a penetração intratubular de cimentos biocerâmicos.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate penetrability on dentinal tubule of a new bioceramic sealer through confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). A specific fluorophore (Fluo-3) was mixed with the sealer. Forty distobuccal roots from maxillary molars were selected, and root canal preparation was carried out with Wave One Gold # 35.06 instruments. Roots were randomly assigned to 4 groups according to the filling procedures: Bioceramic/Lentulo (Sealer Plus BC); Bioceramic/EasyClean group, three activation of the sealer (3x20 s) with Easy Clean instrument; Bioceramic/Irrisonic: ultrasonic activation for 30 s; and AHplus/Lentulo: epoxy resin based sealer (AH Plus) was utilized with the same protocol as the BC/LE group. After 72 h, specimens were transversally sectioned at 2 and 7 mm from root apex and then analyzed through CLSM. Sealer penetration area on dentinal tubule was measured by Adobe Photoshop CC2018. Kruskal Wallis and Wilcoxon T tests were carried out. Penetrability results were similar for both sealers regardless of which technique was performed to activate them inside the root canal (p>0.05). It is reasonable to conclude that penetration of bioceramic and epoxy resin based sealers occurred unimpressively. The type of instrument used to activate bioceramic sealer did not affect penetrability. Fluo 3 should be recommended as the fluorophore to evaluate dentinal tubule penetration of bioceramic sealers.

Resumo Este estudo verificou o grau de saturação de oxigênio (SaO2) pulpar antes, durante e após o clareamento dental caseiro em incisivos centrais superiores hígidos. O nível de SaO2 foi verificado em 136 incisivos centrais superiores hígidos usando oxímetro de pulso. A técnica de clareamento empregou peróxido de carbamida 10% em moldeira individual por quatro horas diárias durante 14 dias. Os níveis de SaO2 foram analisados antes do clareamento (T0), imediatamente após a primeira sessão (T1), no sétimo dia de tratamento (T2), no décimo quinto dia (um dia após a última sessão) (T3) e 30 dias após o término do clareamento dental (T4). A análise estatística utilizou o modelo de equações de estimações generalizadas (GEE), teste t de Student (p<0,05) e correlação de Pearson. Os níveis médios de SaO2 pulpar foram 85,1% em T0, 84,9% em T1, 84,7% em T2, 84,3% em T3 e 85,0% em T4. Foi observada uma redução gradual dos níveis de SaO2, com diferenças significantes (p<0,001) durante o clareamento dental caseiro. No entanto, 30 dias após o término do clareamento dental, houve retorno aos valores iniciais. O clareamento dental caseiro provocou uma diminuição transitória reversível no grau de SaO2 pulpar.

Abstract The present study assessed oxygen saturation (SaO2) levels before, during, and after at-home bleaching treatment in the pulps of healthy maxillary central incisors. SaO2 levels were measured in 136 healthy maxillary central incisors using a pulse oximeter. The bleaching protocol consisted of 10% carbamide peroxide gel placed in individual trays and used for four hours daily for 14 days. SaO2 levels were assessed before bleaching (T0), immediately after the first session (T1), on the 7th day of treatment (T2), on the 15th day (the day following the last session) (T3), and 30 days after completion of the bleaching protocol (T4). Data were statistically analyzed using generalized estimating equations (GEE), Student’s t test (p<0.05) and Pearson’s correlation. Mean pulp SaO2 levels were 85.1% at T0, 84.9% at T1, 84.7% at T2, 84.3% at T3, and 85.0% at T4. Gradual reductions in SaO2 levels were observed, with significant differences (p<0.001) during the course of home bleaching treatment. However, 30 days after the end of the bleaching protocol, SaO2 levels returned to baseline levels. Home bleaching caused a reversible transient decrease in SaO2 levels in the pulps.

Resumo Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar as propriedades físico-químicas de um cimento à base de silicato de cálcio (Sealer Plus BC MK Life, Porto Alegre, Brasil) e compará-las a um cimento à base de resina epóxica (AH Plus, Dentsply DeTrey GmbH, Konstanz, Alemanha). Tempo de presa inicial e final foram avaliados com base na ISO 6876:2012 e ASTM C266:03. Liberação de íons cálcio e pH foram avaliados após o preenchimento de tubos de polietileno com os cimentos e imersão em 10 mL de água deionizada. Após os tempos experimentais de 1,24,72 e 168 horas, os valores de pH e liberação de íons cálcio foram mensurados utilizando um medidor de pH e um espectofotômetro colorimétrico, respectivamente. Escoamento foi avaliado com base na ISO 6876:2012. Moldes de 10 mm de diâmetro e 1 mm de espessura foram preparados para análise de radiopacidade (ISO 6876:2012 e ADA n.57), solubilidade (ISO 6876:2012). Os dados foram analisados por análise de variância, teste T de Student e teste de Tukey (p<0,05). A liberação de íons cálcio e os valores de pH foram significativamente maiores para o Sealer Plus BC em comparação com o AH Plus (p<0,05). Menores valores de tempo de presa, escoamento e radiopacidade foram observados para o cimento biocerâmico quando comparados com o AH Plus (p<0,05). Sealer Plus BC apresentou propriedades físico-químicas de tempo de presa, pH, liberação de íons cálcio, escoamento, radiopacidade de acordo com as normas exigidas, porém maior solubilidade que aquelas previstas pela ISO 6876:2012.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical properties of a calcium silicate-based sealer (Sealer Plus BC; MK Life, Porto Alegre, Brazil) compared with an epoxy-resin sealer (AH Plus; Dentsply DeTrey GmbH, Konstanz, Germany). Initial and final setting time was assessed based on ISO 6876:2012 and ASTM C266:03. Calcium ion release and pH were evaluated by filling polyethylene tubes with sealers and then immersing them in 10 mL of deionized water. Following experimental periods of 1, 24, 72 and 168 hours, the samples were measured regarding pH and calcium ion release with a pH meter and a colorimetric spectrophotometer, respectively. The flow was examined based on ISO 6876:2012. Rings of 10 mm in diameter with 1 mm thickness were prepared to analyze the radiopacity (ISO 6876:2012 and ADA n.57) and solubility (ISO 6876:2012). The data were analyzed by variance analysis, Student-T and Tukey tests (p<0.05). The calcium ion release and pH values were significantly higher for the Sealer Plus BC compared with the AH Plus (p<0.05). Lower setting time, flow and radiopacity were observed for the bioceramic sealer than for AH Plus (p<0.05). Sealer Plus BC exhibited higher solubility compared with AH Plus (p<0.05). Sealer Plus BC showed physicochemical properties as setting time, pH, calcium release, flow, and radiopacity following the required standards, but higher solubility than the minimum values required by ISO 6876:2012.

Abstract Acute periradicular abscess is a condition characterized by the formation and propagation of pus in the periapical tissues and generally associated with debilitating pain. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the overall analgesic effectiveness of two combinations of opioid and non-opioid analgesics for acute periradicular abscess. Material and Methods: This study included 26 patients who sought emergency care in a Brazilian dental school. The patients were randomly divided into two groups: Co/Ac - oral prescription of codeine (30 mg) plus acetaminophen (500 mg), every 4 h, for 3 days or Tr/Ac - oral prescription of tramadol hydrochloride (37.5 mg) plus acetaminophen (500 mg) on the same schedule. Two factors were evaluated: (1) pain scores recorded by the patients in a pain diary 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h after treatment, using the Visual Analogue Scale; and (2) the occurrence of adverse effects. Results: In both groups, there was a reduction in pain scores over time. For the Co/Ac group, there was a significant reduction in the scores 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours after treatment (P<0.05). In the Tr/Ac group, the scores significantly decreased over time from time point 6 h (P<0.05). Comparing the pain at each time point, the groups were not significantly different (P>0.05), i.e., both treatments were effective in controlling pain caused by APA; however, the combination of Tr/Ac caused more adverse reactions as two patients had to stop using the medication. Conclusion: This study suggests that, considering both analgesic efficacy and safety, the combination of codeine and acetaminophen is more effective to control moderate to severe pain from acute periradicular abscesses.

Resumo O objetivo dente estudo foi quantificar o material obturador residual após remoção da obturação, repreparo do canal com instrumentos de rotação contínua e reciprocantes e após irrigação ultrassônica passiva (IUP). Vinte molares superiores foram preparados usando instrumentos ProTaper sequencialmente até F1. Os dentes foram obturados com AH Plus e cones de guta percha ProTaper utilizando a técnica de cone único. Em seguida, os espécimes foram submetidos à microtomografia computadorizada (Micro-CT #1). Então, o material obturador foi removido utilizando instrumentos ProTaper Retratamento e novo escaneamento foi realizado (Micro-CT #2). Os espécimes foram divididos em dois grupos de acordo com o instrumento usado para o repreparo: de rotação contínua (ProTaper) ou reciprocante (WaveOne) (Micro-CT #3). Finalmente, IUP foi realizada e nova micro-CT foi conduzida (Micro-CT #4). As análises intra-grupo e inter-grupos foram realizadas utilizando os testes de Friedman e de Dunn e o teste de Kruskal-Wallis e Dunn, respectivamente. O canal palatino apresentou o maior volume de material obturador remanescente em todos os estágios do tratamento endodôntico (p<0,05). A maior redução do volume da obturação foi obtida após usar os instrumentos ProTaper Retratamento (p<0,05). A quantidade de material obturador remanescente após utilizar instrumentos ProTaper Retratamento foi similar àquela obtida após repreparo com instrumentos de rotação contínua e reciprocantes e após a IUP (p>0,05). Instrumentos de rotação contínua e reciprocantes proporcionaram similar remoção de material obturador (p>0,05). A maior redução do volume de material obturador foi obtida após utilizar os instrumentos ProTaper Retratamento. Instrumentos de rotação contínua e reciprocantes, assim como a IUP, não reduzíram o volume de material obturador remanescente.

The aim of this study was to quantify the residual filling material after filling removal, re-preparation with rotary or reciprocating files and passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI). Twenty maxillary molars were prepared using ProTaper instruments up to F1. The teeth were filled with AH Plus and ProTaper gutta-percha points using the single-cone technique. Thereafter, the specimens were scanned using a micro-computed tomography system (Micro-CT #1). Then, the root canal filling was removed using ProTaper Retreatment files, and a new scan was performed (Micro-CT #2). The specimens were divided into two groups according to the instrument used for re-preparation: ProTaper rotary or WaveOne reciprocating files (Micro-CT #3). Finally, PUI was performed, and a new micro-CT scan was performed (Micro-CT #4). Intragroup and intergroup analyses were performed using Friedman and Dunn's post hoc test and the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn post hoc tests, respectively. Palatal canal presented the highest volume of residual filling material in all stages of endodontic retreatment (p<0.05). The main reduction of filling volume was achieved after using ProTaper Retreament (p<0.05). The amount of remaining filling material after using ProTaper Retreatment was similar to that achieved with rotary and reciprocating files and after PUI (p>0.05). Rotary and reciprocating files achieved similar removal of the root canal filling (p>0.05). The greatest reduction in filling material was achieved after using ProTaper Retreatment files. Rotary and reciprocating instruments and PUI did not improve the removal of root canal filling materials.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the push-out bond strength of glass fiber posts to root dentin after cementation with glass ionomer (GICs) and resinmodified glass ionomer cements (RMGICs). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty human maxillary canines were transversally sectioned at 15 mm from the apex. Canals were prepared with a step back technique until the application of a #55 K-file and filled. Post spaces were prepared and specimens were divided into five groups according to the cement used for post cementation: Luting & Lining Cement; Fuji II LC Improved; RelyX Luting; Ketac Cem; and Ionoseal. After cementation of the glass fiber posts, all roots were stored at 100% humidity until testing. For push-out test, 1-mm thick slices were produced. The push-out test was performed in a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/minute and the values (MPa) were analyzed by Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Levene's tests and by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test at a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: Fiber posts cemented using Luting & Lining Cement, Fuji II LC Improved, and Ketac Cem presented the highest bond strength to root dentin, followed by RelyX Luting. Ionoseal presented the lowest bond strength values (P>0.05). The post level did not influence the bond strength of fiber posts to root dentin (P=0.148). The major cause of failure was cohesive at the cement for all GICs and RMGICs. CONCLUSIONS: Except for Ionoseal, all cements provided satisfactory bond strength values.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a resistência à fratura de dentes amplamente destruídos após duas técnicas de preparo (limas manual e rotatória) e após duas técnicas obturadoras (compactação ativa e passiva). Sessenta e oito raízes de caninos superiores com diâmetro apical igual a uma lima K #25 foram embutidas em resina acrílica e o ligamento periodontal foi simulado utilizando um material de moldagem à base de poliéter. As raízes foram distribuídas aleatoriamente em quatro grupos (n=17): preparo manual e compactação ativa (MA), preparo manual e compactação passiva (MP), preparo rotatório e compactação ativa (RA) e preparo rotatório e compactação passiva (RP). Todas as raízes foram restauradas com pino de fibra de vidro e coroa metálica. Os espécimes foram ciclados mecanicamente (500.000 ciclos, 45°, 37°C, 133 N, 2 Hz) e depois submetidos ao teste de resistência à fratura. Um único examinador cego analisou a superfície externa das raízes e classificou o padrão de falha em favorável ou desfavorável. Os valores de resistência à fratura variaram entre 621,15 N (MP) e 785,71 N (MA). Entretanto, o teste de Kruskal-Wallis não revelou diferença nos valores de resistência à fratura entre os quatro grupos (p=0,247). Diante das condições testadas, as técnicas de preparo e de obturação do canal radicular não influenciam na resistência à fratura de dentes amplamente destruídos restaurados com pino de fibra de vidro e coroa metálica.

The purpose of this study was to assess the fracture resistance of extensively damaged teeth after two root canal preparation techniques (hand and rotary files) and after two filling techniques (active and passive compaction). Sixty-eight maxillary canines roots with an apical diameter equal to that of a #25 K-file were embedded in acrylic resin and the periodontal ligament was simulated by using a polyether impression material. The roots were randomly distributed into four groups (n=17): hand preparation and active compaction (HA), hand preparation and passive compaction (HP), rotary preparation and active compaction (RA), and rotary preparation and passive compaction (RP). All roots were restored with glass fiber post and metallic crown. The specimens were mechanically cycled (500,000 cycles, 45°, 37°C, 133 N, 2 Hz) and then subjected to a fracture resistance test. A single blinded examiner analyzed the external root surface and classified the failure pattern as favorable or unfavorable. The fracture resistance values ranged between 621.15 N (HP) and 785.71 N (HA). However, the Kruskal-Wallis test did not reveal differences in the fracture resistance values among the four groups (p =0.247). Under the tested conditions, root canal preparation and filling techniques had no influence on the fracture resistance of extensively damaged teeth restored with fiber post and metallic crown.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos de diferentes soluções irrigadoras na resistência adesiva do Real Seal à dentina radicular. Trinta dentes monorradiculares foram divididos em 3 grupos: Grupo 1 - os dentes foram irrigados com 3 mL de NaOCl 2,5% após cada troca de instrumento, irrigados com EDTA 17% por 3 min e lavagem final com NaOCl 2,5%. Nos Grupos 2 e 3, o NaOCl foi substituído por digluconato de clorexidina 2% (CHX) e solução salina 0,9%, respectivamente. Cada raiz foi seccionada transversalmente nos terços apical, médio e cervical para obter fatias de 2 mm de espessura. Cada slice foi obturado com Real Seal e Resilon. Teste de push-out foi usado para analisar a resistência adesiva e os padrões de falha foram classificados como adesiva, coesiva e mista de acordo com MEV. O teste de push-out não revelou diferença estatisticamente significante entre os irrigantes (p<0,05). Porém, os grupos exibiram diferentes valores de resistência adesiva de acordo com o terço radicular (p>0,05). Maior resistência adesiva foi observada na região apical quando comparado com o terço cervical, enquanto que o terço médio apresentou valores intermediarios. Quinze espécimes foram analisados através de MEV (5 por grupo). Onze espécimes exibiram falhas adesivas (5 no grupo da solução salina, 4 no grupo NaOCl e 2 na CHX); duas falhas coesivas foram observadas no grupo CHX e uma falha mista foi observada no grupo da CHX e uma no NaOCl. Os irrigantes testados não influenciaram a resistência adesiva do Resilon e do Real Seal à dentina radicular. O terço apical apresentou maior resistência adesiva e falhas adesivas foram predominantes para todos os grupos

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different irrigants on sealer-dentin bond strength when using Real Seal. Thirty single-rooted teeth were divided into 3 groups. In one group, the teeth were irrigated with 3 mL of 2.5% NaOCl after each file change, flushed with 17% EDTA for 3 min and finally rinsed with 3 mL of 2.5% NaOCl. In the other two groups, rinse with NaOCl was replaced with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) and 0.9% saline, respectively. Each root was sectioned transversally into apical, middle and coronal thirds to obtain 2-mm-thick slices. Each slice was filled with Real Seal and Resilon. Push-out test was used to analyze bond strength and failure modes were classified as adhesive, cohesive or mixed, according to SEM observations. The push-out test did not reveal any statistically significant difference (p>0.05) between the irrigants. However, the groups exhibited significantly different (p<0.05) bond strengths in terms of the root canal third. Higher bond strength was observed at the apical third when compared with coronal third, while middle third presented intermediary values. Fifteen specimens were analyzed by SEM (5 per group). Eleven specimens exhibited adhesive failures (5 in saline, 4 in NaOCl and 2 in CHX group); 2 cohesive failures were observed in the CHX group, and 1 mixed failure each was observed in the CHX and NaOCl groups. The tested irrigants did not influence the bond strength of Resilon and Real Seal to dentin. The apical third exhibited higher mean bond strengths and adhesive failures were predominant.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar, in vivo, a aplicabilidade clínica de dois localizadores apicais eletrônicos (LAEs) - Apex (Septodont) e iPex (NSK) - em diferentes grupos de dentes humanos usando análise radiográfica. Os comprimentos de trabalho de 100 canais radiculares foram determinados eletronicamente. O LAE a ser usado primeiro foi escolhido randomicamente e uma lima tipo K foi inserida no canal radicular até que o visor do aparelho indicasse a localização da constrição apical (0 mm). A lima foi fixada na coroa do dente e uma radiografia periapical foi realizada utilizando posicionador radiográfico. Em seguida, a lima foi removida e o comprimento de trabalho foi mensurado. O mesmo procedimento foi realizado para o segundo LAE. As radiografias foram analizadas em negatoscópio com lupa de ×4 por dois endodontistas experientes, cegos em relação aos grupos. A distância entre a ponta da lima e o ápice radiográfico foi classificada como: (A) + 1 a 0 mm; (B) - 0,1 a 0,5 mm; (C) - 0,6 a 1 mm; (D) - 1,1 a 1,5 mm; e (E) - 1,6 mm ou mais. Para fins estatísticos, esta classificação foi dividida em dois sub-grupos: aceitável (B, C, D) e não aceitável (A e E). Não foi observada diferença estatisticamente significante entre Apex e iPex em relação às medições consideradas aceitáveis e não aceitáveis (p>0,05) e nem à distância da ponta da lima e o ápice radiográfico (p>0,05). Os localizadores apicais Apex e iPex apresentaram medidas odontométricas confiáveis para o tratamento endodôntico

The aim of this study was to evaluate in vivo the clinical applicability of two electronic apex locators (EALs) - Apex (Septodont) and iPex (NSK) - in different groups of human teeth by using radiography. The working lengths (WLs) of 100 root canals were determined electronically. The EAL to be used first was chosen randomly and a K-file was inserted into the root canal until the EAL display indicated the location of the apical constriction (0 mm). The K-file was fixed to the tooth and a periapical radiograph was taken using a radiographic film holder. The K-file was removed and the WL was measured. The same procedure was repeated using the other EAL. Radiographs were examined with the aid of a light-box with lens of ×4 magnification by two blinded experienced endodontists. The distance between the file tip and the root apex was recorded as follows: (A) +1 to 0 mm, (B) -0.1 to 0.5 mm, (C) -0.6 to 1 mm, (D) -1.1 to 1.5 mm, and (E) -1.6 mm or greater. For statistical purposes, these scores were divided into 2 subgroups according to the radiographic apex: acceptable (B, C, and D) and non-acceptable (A and E). Statistically significant differences were not found between the results of Apex and iPex in terms of acceptable and non-acceptable measurements (p>0.05) or in terms of the distance recorded from file tip and the radiographic apex (p>0.05). Apex and iPex EALs provided reliable measurements for WL determination for endodontic therapy.

OBJETIVO: O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a capacidade de dissolução tecidual de várias concentrações de hipoclorito de sódio, isoladamente ou em combinação com o EDTA 17%. METODOLOGIA: Oitenta fragmentos de polpa bovina foram preparados e seus pesos foram determinados através de uma balança de precisão. Cada fragmento pulpar foi imerso por 2 horas em cada uma das soluções/misturas e formaram os seguintes grupos: G1- Solução salina; G2- NaOCl 0,5%; G3- NaOCl 1%; G4- NaOCl 2,5%; G5- EDTA 17%; G6- NaOCl 0,5% + EDTA 17%; G7- NaOCl 1,0% + EDTA 17%; G8- NaOCl 2,5% + EDTA 17%. O peso final foi medido e a perda de peso calculada. A análise estatística foi realizada através do teste t de Student para amostras pareadas, ou ANOVA e teste de Tukey. RESULTADOS: Verificaram-se diferenças entre os pesos das amostras antes e depois do tratamento para cada um dos grupos testados (P< 0,05). A solução de hipoclorito de sódio 2,5% (G4) dissolveu completamente o tecido pulpar dentro do período teste. O hipoclorito de sódio + EDTA foi menos efetivo na dissolução do tecido pulpar do que o hipoclorito de sódio sozinho (P < 0,05), e o EDTA (G5) não dissolveu o tecido pulpar. CONCLUSÃO: O uso do EDTA misturado com o hipoclorito de sódio reduziu a propriedade de dissolução tecidual comparado ao hipoclorito de sódio sozinho, a despeito das concentrações de hipoclorito de sódio.

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the tissue dissolving capacity of various concentrations of sodium hypochlorite either alone or in combination with 17% EDTA. METHODS: Eighty bovine pulp fragments were prepared, and their weight was determined using a precision balance. Each pulp fragment was immersed for 2 hours in a solution/mixture that was based on the following groups: G1 - saline solution; G2 - 0.5% NaOCl; G3 - 1.0% NaOCl; G4 - 2.5% NaOCl; G5 - 17% EDTA; G6 - 0.5% NaOCl+17% EDTA; G7 - 1.0% NaOCl+17% EDTA; and G8 - 2.5% NaOCl+17% EDTA. The final weight was measured, and the weight loss was calculated. A statistical analysis was performed using either the Student's t-test for paired samples or an ANOVA and Tukey tests (P<0.05 was considered to be significant). RESULTS: We measured a significant difference between the sample weight before and after treatment for each of the tested groups (P<0.05). The 2.5% sodium hypochlorite solution (G4) completely dissolved the pulp tissue within the test period. NaOCl+EDTA was less effective than sodium hypochlorite alone at dissolving the pulp tissue (P<0.05), and EDTA alone (G5) did not markedly dissolve the pulp tissue. CONCLUSION: Using EDTA together with NaOCl reduced the tissue dissolving properties compared with NaOCl alone, regardless of the concentration of NaOCl that was used.
