RESUMO O conceito de patrimônio é uma construção social, definida a partir da percepção do risco de desaparecimento de bens da criação humana e bens da natureza. A institucionalização de práticas patrimoniais em domínios separados cultura e natureza expressou o dualismo cartesiano mais amplo, por compreender de modo desarticulado os aspectos tangíveis e intangíveis dos bens a serem conservados e por ter em conta a valoração de criações “civilizatórias” e a menos valia das criações da cultura popular em sua interação com o meio ambiente. No entanto, as práticas conservacionistas desde o final do século XX acabaram por mostrar quão híbrido é o conceito, e que a eficácia da conservação só pode ocorrer a partir da superação da dualidade material/imaterial e da interação de diferentes saberes, tantos os científicos quanto os empíricos.

ABSTRACT The concept of heritage is a social construction, defined from the perception that natural and human-created goods run the risk of disappearing. The institutionalization of heritage practices in separate domains of culture and nature expresses the broa- der Cartesian dualism, disarticulating the tangible and intangible aspects of the items to be preserved, assigning value to “civilizing” creations and diminishing the value of the creations of popular culture in their interaction with the environment. However, conservationist practices since the end of the 20th century have shown how hybrid this concept is, and that conservation can be effective only by overcoming the material/immaterial duality and through the interaction of different types of knowledge, both scientific and empirical.

Resumo: A partir de uma análise sobre a utilização das biotecnologias médicas, este artigo pretende compreender como a disseminação de uma lógica e um discurso "informacional", na área de saúde, mascaram as intervenções médicas efetuadas no corpo humano. Argumenta-se que frequentemente as práticas biotecnológicas são tratadas como meras relações linguísticas, como se não fossem operações de carne e sangue realizadas nos corpos. Para abordar a forma como essa lógica se processa, será feita, neste texto, uma breve discussão sobre como as disputas em torno do que são, e como operam os genes, acabam por reforçar um paradigma informacional, ainda que tal resolução não seja amparada pelas evidências empíricas, mas em metáforas bem-sucedidas.

Abstract: Starting with an analysis of the use of medical biotechnology, this article aims to understand how medical interventions in the human body are masked by a certain logic and by an "informational" discourse on health care. We argue that biotechnological practices are often treated as linguistic relations, as if they were not flesh and blood operations on bodies. To address how this logic is processed, we discuss how disputes over the nature and functioning of genes end up strengthening an informational paradigm that is not based on empirical evidence, but rather on successful metaphors.

Resumo: Este texto tem por objetivo expor e refletir sobre o debate entre dois dos principais cientistas sociais da atualidade: Ulrich Beck e Bruno Latour. Contudo, sugiro ainda que esse debate transcende o nível de suas convergências e divergências nos fornecendo indicativos de algumas tendências nas humanidades. Um dos aspectos que pretendo discutir se refere ao que observo como uma “abertura antropológica” das ciências humanas, que de modo algum corresponde a sua antropologização. Argumento que em função da proliferação de crises, pela quais passam as instituições contemporâneas, sociólogos e cientistas políticos tendem a abrir seus esquemas macroexplicativos da realidade social ao escrutínio e à combinação de metodologias antropológicas como meio de encontrar bases para a construção de novos parâmetros que possam balizar projetos políticos normativos inclusivos.

Abstract: This paper aims to expose and reflect on the debate between remarkable social scientists of our time: Ulrich Beck and Bruno Latour. However, I still suggest that this debate goes beyond the level of their convergences and divergences in providing indicative of some trends in the humanities. One aspect that I intend to discuss refers to what I see as an “anthropological openness” of the human sciences, which in no way corresponds to his anthropologization. I argue that due the proliferation of crises sociologists and political scientists tend to open their macro-explanatory schemes of social scrutiny and the combination of anthropological methodologies as a mean of finding bases for new parameters that can delimit normative political projects.

As supostas propriedades dos 'genes' levam os cientistas naturais a reivindicar autoridade para explicar as razões de atos, comportamentos e até a natureza humana, tradicional objeto de estudo das ciências humanas. O objetivo deste artigo é discutir as possibilidades de a teoria sociológica lidar com o reducionismo biológico, que estabelece uma articulação exata entre 'natureza humana' e 'ação humana'. Tal reducionismo está presente em discursos e artigos de cientistas e jornalistas, e é embasado por características dos 'genes'. Argumento que as teorias sociológicas podem ampliar suas possibilidades de análise se incorporarem dimensões biológicas, o que não implica necessariamente adotar uma abordagem reducionista.

The supposed properties of 'genes' have led natural scientists to claim authority to explain the reasons of human action, behavior, and even human nature, which has traditionally been the object of study of the humanities. The aim of this paper is to discuss the possibilities of sociological theory dealing with the biological reductionism that establishes the strict articulation between 'human nature' and 'human action', presented in several speeches and papers by scientists and journalists and supported by features of 'genes'. I intend to argue that sociological theories may broaden their scope of analysis by encompassing biological dimensions, which does not necessarily mean adopting a biological reductionist approach.
