Abstract: What controls the formation of patchy substrates of white sand vegetation in the Amazonian lowlands is still unclear. This research integrated the geological history and plant inventories of a white sand vegetation patch confined to one large fan-shaped sandy substrate of northern Amazonia, which is related to a megafan environment. We examined floristic patterns to determine whether abundant species are more often generalists than the rarer one, by comparing the megafan environments and older basement rocks. We also investigated the pattern of species accumulation as a function of increasing sampling effort. All plant groups recorded a high proportion of generalist species on the megafan sediments compared to older basement rocks. The vegetation structure is controlled by topographic gradients resulting from the smooth slope of the megafan morphology and microreliefs imposed by various megafan subenvironments. Late Pleistocene-Holocene environmental disturbances caused by megafan sedimentary processes controlled the distribution of white sand vegetation over a large area of the Amazonian lowlands, and may have also been an important factor in species diversification during this period. The integration of geological and biological data may shed new light on the existence of many patches of white sand vegetation from the plains of northern Amazonia.

ABSTRACT This paper presents a sedimentological and stratigraphical study of Quaternary (Middle to Late Pleistocene/Holocene) continental carbonates outcrops inside Pantanal Basin and its surroundings, especially in Serra da Bodoquena, Pantanal do Miranda and Corumbá/Ladário plateau, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, as well as in Serra das Araras, in the state of Mato Grosso. The aim is to understand the depositional paleoenvironments and analyse climate and tectonic influences in their genesis and evolution. The results show that the deposition of these continental carbonates started in the Middle to Late Pleistocene and have continued, with some interruptions, until the present days. Sedimentary successions were identified in the different areas, without complete correlation. Two sedimentary successions separated by an erosional surface were described in Serra da Bodoquena and Serra das Araras. In Corumbá and Pantanal do Miranda, only one succession was described. These successions were deposited in elongated lakes parallel to fault planes; small lakes, related plains and plateaus; springs related to cliffs produced by faulting; rivers conditioned by topographic variation. The climatic interpretation, without proper temporal resolution, obtained by the stable-isotope composition and stratigraphic interpretation, indicates alternation of dry and wet periods. The Neoproterozoic faults with their neotectonics and the subsidence of the Pantanal Basin, are the major control for carbonated water flow and development of depositional areas, gradually turning plateaus into slight tilted areas, allowing the evolution of depositional systems from lakes to rivers.

Sistemas de drenagem antigos têm sido documentados na bacia do Amazonas e sua caracterização é crucial para a reconstrução da evolução fluvial nessa área. Morfologias fluviais, incluindo cinturões alongados, são bem preservadas ao longo do rio Madeira. O modelo digital de elevação do Shuttle Radar Topography Mission(SRTM) favoreceu a detecção dessas feições até mesmo em áreas cobertas por vegetação florestal densa. Essas paleomorfologias são atribuídas a mudanças de posição de antigos tributários do rio Madeira por meio de avulsões. Essas redes de paleodrenagens radiais produziram morfologias em leque que lembram megaleques distributários. A distinção entre sistemas tributários avulsivos e megaleques distributários no registro sedimentar é um desafio. A paleodrenagem do Madeira revela a superposição de canais tributários formados por avulsões múltiplas dentro de um dado período de tempo, mais do que a bifurcação a jusante de canais coexistentes. A avulsão de canal nessa área Amazônica durante o Quaternário tardio é relacionada à tectônica devido a feições como: (i) lineamentos retilíneos coincidentes com direções de falhas; (ii) mergulho para nordeste dos terreno com estratos quaternários; e (iii) várias anomalias de drenagem, incluindo inflexões ortogonais de drenagem. Essas características em conjunto levam a propor que a paleodrenagem radial presente nas margens do rio Madeira resulta de avulsões sucessivas de canais tributários ao longo do tempo devido à tectônica.

Ancient drainage systems are being increasingly documented in the Amazon basin and their characterization is crucial for reconstructing fluvial evolution in this area. Fluvial morphologies, including elongate belts, are well preserved along the Madeira River. Digital Elevation Model from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission favored the detection of these features even where they are covered by dense rainforest. These paleomorphologies are attributed to the shifting position of past tributaries of the Madeira River through avulsions. These radial paleodrainage networks produced fan-shaped morphologies that resemble distributary megafans. Distinguishing avulsive tributary systems from distributary megafans in the sedimentary record is challenging. Madeira´s paleodrainage reveals the superposition of tributary channels formed by multiple avulsions within a given time period, rather than downstream bifurcation of coexisting channels. Channel avulsion in this Amazonian area during the late Quaternary is related to tectonics due to features as: (i) straight lineaments coincident with fault directions; (ii) northeastward tilting of the terrain with Quaternary strata; and (iii) several drainage anomalies, including frequent orthogonal drainage inflections. These characteristics altogether lead to propose that the radial paleodrainage present at the Madeira River margin results from successive avulsions of tributary channels over time due to tectonics.

O objetivo deste estudo foi de reconstruir a composição florística do Pleistoceno Tardio-Holoceno em uma área da Amazônia Oriental, comparando os resultados com outras localidades amazônicas, a fim de discutir os fatores que influenciaram as mudanças fitofisionômicas. O trabalho no leste da Ilha do Marajó, na desembocadura do rio Amazonas, baseou-se na análise de 98 amostras de pólen e diatomácea derivadas de dados de testemunhos de sondagem distribuídos ao longo de um transecto proximal-distal de um sistema paleoestuarino. Os resultados indicaram alta concentração de Rhizophora, associada a grãos de pólen típicos da floresta Amazônica moderna durante os últimos 40.000 yrs BP. A composição palinológica também incluiu ervas de áreas alagadas. Diatomáceas são dominadas por táxons marinhos e de água doce. Floresta inundada, mangue e, subordinadamente erva, permaneceram constantes durante grande parte do Pleistoceno Tardio-Holoceno inferior/médio. A 5.000 cal BP, houve mudança marcada de floresta e mangue para savana de gramíneas de áreas alagadas devido a flutuações do nível do mar. Com diminuição da influência marinha, o estuário foi substituído por ambientes de lago de água doce e pântanos, com estabelecimento de campos herbáceos. Uma conclusão principal deste estudo é que a ocorrência de savana herbácea não pode ser usada como indicador para sugerir climas secos passados em áreas amazônicas.

The main goal of this study was to reconstruct the Late Pleistocene-Holocene floristic composition in an area of the northern Brazilian Amazonia, comparing the results with other Amazonian localities in order to discuss the factors that have influenced phytophysiognomic changes over this time period. The work in eastern Marajó Island at the mouth of the Amazonas River was approached based on analysis of 98 pollen and diatom samples from core data distributed along a proximal to distal transect of a paleoestuarine system. The results indicated high concentration of Rhizophora, associated with arboreal pollen grains typical of the modern Amazonian rainforest during the last 40,000 cal yrs BP. Pollen composition also included wetland herbs. Diatoms were dominated by marine and fresh water taxa. Wetland forest, mangrove and, subordinately herbs remained constant during most of the latest Pleistocene-early/middle Holocene. At 5,000 cal yrs BP, there was a distinguished change from forest and mangrove to wet grassland savanna due to sea level fluctuation. As marine influence decreased, the estuary gave rise to fresh water lacustrine and swamp environments, with establishment of herbaceous campos. A main conclusion from this study is that solely the occurrence of herbaceous savanna can not be used as a definitive indicator of past dry climates in Amazonian areas.

Estudos sugerem que a ilha do Marajó experimentou atividade neotectônica durante sua evolução final. Entretanto, não existem dados demonstrando a presença de estruturas tectônicas em subsuperfície. Este trabalho integra sondagem elétrica vertical, lineamentos morfoestruturais e dados geológicos objetivando mostrar que falhas controlaram a sedimentação pleistocênica tardiaholocênica nesta área. Valores de resistividade foram relacionados com sedimentos argilosos (< 90 Ωm), areia argilosa (90 e 200 Ωm), areia (200 e 500 Ωm), e areia contendo ferro e laterita (> 500 Ωm). Os últimos valores foram registrados na porção leste da área de estudo e relacionados com a discordância com paleossolo laterítico do topo da Formação Barreiras. Apesar de que valores ≤ 500 Ωm ocorrem tanto na Formação Barreiras, como na unidade pleistocênica tardia-holocênica, esta última pode ser diferenciada ao longo das seções elétricas pela presença dessa discordância intermediária, combinado com a integração de idades 14C e de luminescência de grãos de quartzo de sedimentos quaternários. As seções elétricas registraram vários locais com interrupções de valores de resistividade dentro de curtas distâncias, que foram relacionados a falhas. Estratos miocênicos foram deslocados verticalmente por falhas, resultando em novo espaço de acomodação onde sedimentos pleistocênicos tardios-holocênicos foram depositados. A reativação de falhas foi crucial para renovar a sedimentação no leste da ilha do Marajó durante seus últimos estágios de evolução.

Studies suggest that the Marajó Island has experienced neotectonic activity during its latest evolution. However, there are no data demonstrating the presence of tectonic structures in its shallow subsurface. This work integrates vertical electric sounding, morphostructural lineaments, and geological data aiming to show fault control on the Late Pleistocene-Holocene sedimentation of this area. Resistivity values were related to mud (< 90 Ωm), clayey sand (90 and 200 Ωm), sand (200 and 500 Ωm), as well as Fe-bearing sand and laterite (> 500 Ωm). The latest values were related to the unconformity with lateritic paleosol at the top of the Barreiras Formation. Despite the values ≤ 500 Ωm of both the Barreiras Formation and the Late Pleistocene-Holocene unit, the latter was distinguished along four electric sections due to the presence of this unconformity, combined with the integration of available 14C, and luminescence ages of Quaternary sediments. The electric sections recorded several places with lateral interruptions of resistivity values within short distances, which were related to faults. The Miocene strata were vertically displaced by normal faults, giving rise to new accommodation space where Late Pleistocene-Holocene sediments were deposited. Fault reactivation was crucial to renew sedimentation in eastern Marajó Island during its latest evolutionary stage.

Várias publicações têm contribuído para melhorar a estratigrafia da Bacia Paraíba no nordeste do Brasil. Entretanto, a caracterização e distribuição das unidades sedimentares em áreas continentais desta bacia são ainda incompletas, apesar de sua importância para reconstruir a evolução tectono-sedimentar da margem passiva sulamericana. Este trabalho fornece novas informações para diferenciar entre estratos litologicamente similares que, por outro lado, não são relacionados no tempo. Esta abordagem incluiu descrições morfológica, sedimentológica e estratigráfica baseadas em dados de superfície e sub-superfície, integrada com sensoriamento remoto, datação por luminescência opticamente estimulada, datação de goetita intempérica por U+Th/He e análise de minerais pesados. Baseado neste estudo, foi possível mostrar que unidades cretáceas são restritas à parte leste da porção continental da Bacia Paraíba. Exceto por poucos afloramentos de rochas carbonáticas próximo da linha de costa atual, depósitos desta idade não são expostos à superfície na área de estudo. Ao invés disto, a cobertura sedimentar ao longo da bacia é constituída por depósitos mineralogicamente e cronologicamente distintos, inseridos na Formação Barreiras e, principalmente, nos Sedimentos Pós-Barreiras, de idade eo/mesomiocena e pleistocena tardia-holocena, respectivamente. Os dados apresentados neste trabalho suportam deformação tectônica como um fator de grande relevância na distribuição das unidades sedimentares da Bacia Paraíba.

Several publications have contributed to improve the stratigraphy of the Paraíba Basin in northeastern Brazil. However, the characterization and distribution of sedimentary units in onshore areas of this basin are still incomplete, despite their significance for reconstructing the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the South American passive margin. This work provides new information to differentiate among lithologically similar strata, otherwise entirely unrelated in time. This approach included morphological, sedimentological and stratigraphic descriptions based on surface and sub-surface data integrated with remote sensing, optically stimulated luminescence dating, U+Th/He dating of weathered goethite, and heavy mineral analysis. Based on this study, it was possible to show that Cretaceous units are constrained to the eastern part of the onshore Paraíba Basin. Except for a few outcrops of carbonatic rocks nearby the modern coastline, deposits of this age are not exposed to the surface in the study area. Instead, the sedimentary cover throughout the basin is constituted by mineralogically and chronologically distinctive deposits, inserted in the Barreiras Formation and mostly in the Post-Barreiras Sediments, of early/middle Miocene and Late Pleistocene-Holocene ages, respectively. The data presented in this work support tectonic deformation as a factor of great relevance to the distribution of the sedimentary units of the Paraíba Basin.

A visão tradicional de que a Amazônia brasileira localiza-se em ma área tectonicamente estável desde o Cretáceo está mudando perante a crescente documentação de reativações de falha, até mesmo durante o Holoceno. Como o registro sedimentar respondeu a esses eventos é um tema que permanece por ser abordado com base em dados de campo. Este trabalho enfatiza a correlação estratigráfica de depósitos quaternários tardios no leste da Ilha do Marajó, com o objetivo de demonstrar a importância de reativações de falha na origem e preservação desses depósitos. Apesar da localização em área de plataforma de uma margem continental passiva, três unidades estratigráficas estudadas mostram significantes rejeitos verticais, que definem dois depocentros, explicados por deslocamentos tectônicos. Esta interpretação é reforçada por várias feições morfoestruturais relacionadas com falhas localizadas entre os poços estudados. Sem influência tectônica, a preservação de sedimentos nesse terreno, caracteristicamente plano, seria imperceptível. Os resultados do presente trabalho motivam a procurar outras áreas tectonicamente influenciadas da Amazônia, que possam ter atuado como sítios de acomodação de sedimentos durante o Quaternário tardio. Esses registros sedimentares têm grande potencial de serem fontes de informações valiosas para auxiliar na reconstrução de eventos geológicos quaternários no norte do Brasil.

The traditional view that the Brazilian Amazonia is located in a tectonically stable area since the Cretaceous is changing in front of the increasing documentation of fault reactivations even during the Holocene. How the sedimentary record has responded to these events is an issue that remains to be approached with basis on field data. This work focuses on the stratigraphic correlation of late Quaternary deposits from eastern Marajó Island, with the goal of demonstrating the role of fault reactivation on the origin and preservation of these deposits. Despite the location in a stable platform of a continental passive margin, three studied stratigraphic units display significant vertical offsets that define two depocenters that are better explained through tectonic displacements. This interpretation is reinforced by several morphostructural features related to faults that occur between the studied drills. Without the influence of tectonics, sediment preservation in this characteristically low-lying terrain would have been negligible. The results of the present work motivate to look for other tectonically-influenced areas in Amazonia, which similarly might have acted as sites for sediment accommodation during the late Quaternary. These sedimentary records have great potential to be the source of valuable information for reconstructing Quaternary geological events in Northern Brazil.

Processos de maré foram importantes na deposição da Formação Barreiras localizada no norte do Brasil, enquanto depósitos correlatos do nordeste brasileiro têm sido tradicionalmente relacionados a ambientes continentais. Análise de fácies no sul de Alagoas revelou que a Formação Barreiras consiste em conglomerados e arenitos com estratificações cruzadas (facies Sx e Cgx), arenitos com estratificação cruzada composta (facies Cx), e acamamentos heterolíticos (facies H). Uma porção significativa desses depósitos ocorre inserida em morfologias de canal, internamente contendo sucessões de granocrescência e adelgaçamento ascendentes. A abundância de feições sedi-mentares é comparável àquelas documentadas em depósitos correlatos do norte do Brasil. Estas incluem: bandamentos de maré; estratificações cruzadas espinha-de-peixe; acamamen-tos heterolíticos contendo camadas de arenitos e argilitos em contato brusco; e icnofósseis consistindo principalmente em Ophiomorpha nodosa, Skolithos e Planolites. Estas feições apontam para ambiente deposicional marinho marginal dominado por processos de maré, possivelmente relacionado a sistema estuarino. Esta interpretação é similar à atribuída para a Formação Barreiras no norte do Brasil. A ampla ocorrência de depósitos contendo evidência inequívoca de processos de maré na Formação Barreiras no norte do Brasil, e agora também no Estado de Alagoas, leva a propor que o período de transgressão marinha registrada globalmente no eo/meso Mioceno pode ter deixado um registro sedimentar muito mais amplo ao longo da costa brasileira do que até então considerado.

Tidal processes were important for deposition of the Barreiras Formation located in northern Brazil, while correlatable deposits in northeastern Brazil have been traditionally related to continental environments. Facies analysis in southern Alagoas revealed that the Barreiras Formation consists of cross-stratified conglomerates and sandstones (facies Sx and Cgx), compound cross-stratified sandstones (facies Cx), and heterolithic beddings (facies H). A significant portion of these deposits occurs within channel morphologies displaying fining and thinning upward successions. An abundance of sedimentary features is comparable to those from the northern Brazilian counterpart. These include: tidal bundles; herringbone cross-stratification; heterolithic beddings with sandstone and mudstone beds in sharp contacts; and ichnofossils mostly consisting of Ophiomorpha nodosa, Skolithos and Planolites. Altogether, these features point to a marginal marine depositional setting dominated by tidal processes, which are related to an estuarine system, an interpretation also provided for the Barreiras Formation in northern Brazil. The widespread occurrence of deposits with unambiguous evidence of tidal processes in the Barreiras Formation of northern Brazil, and now in the State of Alagoas, leads to argue that the early/middle Miocene worldwide marine transgression might have left a much more widespread sedimentary record along the Brazilian coast than currently regarded.

A Ilha do Marajó mostra uma abundância de paleocanais que são facilmente mapeáveis em sua porção leste, onde a vegetação consiste principalmente em savanas. Dados SRTM possibilitam reconhecer paleocanais também na porção oeste do Marajó, mesmo considerando a cobertura vegetal de floresta densa. Uma rede de paleodrenagem bem preservada nas adjacências da cidade de Breves (sudoeste da Ilha do Marajó) foi investigada neste trabalho combinando-se sensoriamento remoto e estudos sedimentológicos. O sistema de drenagem palimpséstico consiste em um amplo meandro conectado a uma malha de tributários estreitos. Estudos sedimentológicos revelaram, principalmente, sucessões granodecrescentes ascendentes de base abrupta nas feições canalizadas, e intercalações de argilas e areias nas planícies de inundação. As estruturassedimentares e sucessões de fácies estão em perfeita concordância com deposição em ambientes canalizados e de planícies de inundação, como sugerido pelo mapeamento com sensoriamento remoto. O presente estudo mostra que a paleodrenagem foi abandonada no final do Pleistoceno, um pouco antes dos sistemas de paleocanais holocênicos da porção leste da ilha. A integração de estudos prévios com os dados disponíveis no presente trabalho suporta causa tectônica, particularmenterelacionada com a abertura do Rio Pará ao longo de falhastectônicas. Isto explicaria o desaparecimento de canais largos que migravam para norte-nordeste no sudoeste da Ilha do Marajó. Estes foram substituídos por outros canais mais estreitos de direção sul-sudeste que dominam na paisagem atual.

Marajó Island shows an abundance of paleochannels easily mapped in its eastern portion, where vegetation consists mostly of savannas. SRTM data make possible to recognize paleochannels also in western Marajó, even considering the dense forest cover. A well preserved paleodrainage network from the adjacency of the town of Breves (southwestern Marajó Island) was investigated in this work combining remote sensing and sedimentological studies. The palimpsest drainage system consists of a large meander connected to narrower tributaries. Sedimentological studies revealed mostly sharp-based, fining upward sands for the channelized features, and interbedded muds and sands for floodplain areas. The sedimentary structures and facies successions are in perfect agreement with deposition in channelized and floodplain environments, as suggested by remote sensing mapping. The present study shows that this paleodrainage was abandoned during Late Pleistocene, slightly earlier than the Holocene paleochannel systems from the east part of the island. Integration of previous studies with the data available herein supports a tectonic origin, related to the opening of the Pará River along fault lineaments. This would explain the disappearance of large, north to northeastward migrating channel systems in southwestern Marajó Island, which were replaced by the much narrower, south to southeastward flowing modern channels.

Estudos de minerais pesados provenientes em depósitos cauliníticos da Formação Ipixuna na região do rio Capim (Brasil) revelaram uma mineralogia matura a supermatura, representada dominantemente por zircão e turmalina e, subordinadamente, rutilo, cianita e estaurolita. Os minerais encontrados não variam muito, entretanto cada unidade caulinítica apresenta uma assinatura particular definida por diferenças nasproporções entre os principais minerais, assim como em suas características texturais. Este trabalho demonstrou que asunidades de caulim soft (inferior) e semi-flint (superior) podem ser consideradas seqüências deposicionais distintas. As altas percentagens de opacos em relação aos minerais transparentes e altos teores de zircão são diagnósticos da unidade caulinítica inferior. O incremento no volume de grãos de zircão e turmalina arredondados a subarredondados na unidade caulinítica superior sugere que esta inclui grãos que foram submetidos a um grau mais elevado de retrabalhamento. O aumento no volume de grãos não alterados de estaurolita e cianita na unidade superior leva a concluir que, além da reciclagem sedimentar, uma fonte distinta deve ser invocada. Estes resultados também mostram que as características da assembléia de minerais pesados da unidade intermediária são comparáveis com aqueles da unidade superior, o que sugere mesmo posicionamento estratigráfico.

Studies of heavy minerals in kaolin deposits from the Ipixuna Formation in the Rio Capim area (Northern Brazil) showed a mature to super mature assemblage dominated by zircon and tourmaline, and subordinately rutile, kyanite and staurolite. These minerals do not change much throughout the whole section; however, each kaolin unit displays a particular signature, defined by differences in the proportions of the whole assemblage of heavy minerals, as well as of their textural characteristics. This work revealed that the lower and upper kaolin units can be definitely considered as distinct depositional sequences. A higher proportion of opaque minerals and higher zircon values characterize the lower unit. The higher volumes of anhedric, rounded to sub-rounded grains of zircon and tourmaline in the upper unit suggests that this includes grains that were undergone to a higher degree of reworking. The increased volume of unaltered staurolite and kyanite in the upper unit leads to conclude that, even considering sediment reworking, a distinct source must be invoked. The results also show that the characteristics of the heavy mineral assemblage from the intermediate unit are comparable with those from the upper unit, which suggests they might record a same stratigraphic sequence.

Neste trabalho, é apresentado um estudo original e detalhado enfocando os aspectos petrográficos dos evaporitos de depósitos aptianos superiores expostos no sul e leste da Bacia de São Luís-Grajaú. O objetivo é o estabelecimento de critérios que permitam distinguir entre evaporitos primários e secundários, além da reconstrução de sua evolução pós-deposicional. Sete fases de evaporitos foram reconhecidas: 1. gipsita em chevron; 2. gipsita ou anidrita nodular a lenticular; 3. gipsita fibrosa a acicular; 4. gipsita em mosaico; 5. gipsita brechada a gipsarenito; 6. anidrita ou gipsita pseudo-nodular; e 7. gipsita em rosetas. As três primeiras fases apresentam características petrográficas condizentes com origem primária. Agipsita fibrosa a acicular e a gipsita em mosaico foramformadas por substituições de gipsita primária, com origem provável nos estágios iniciais da diagenêse, portanto ainda sob influência do ambiente deposicional. Estas morfologias de gipsita estão relacionadas com a fáciesde evaporito laminado, tendo sido formadas por substituição, porém sem afetar a estruturação primária. A gipsita ou anidrita pseudo-nodular originou-se pela mobilização de soluções sulfatadas durante ou após soterramento, provavelmente associada à halocinese. A gipsita em rosetas, que intercepta todas as outras variedades de gipsita, representa o ultimo estágio de formação de evaporitos na área de estudo, tendo resultado de soluções intraestratais ou de águas superficiais durante intemperismo.

An original and detailed study focusing the petrography of evaporites from the Late Aptian deposits exposed in the eastern and southern São Luís-Grajaú Basin is presented herein, with the attempt of distinguishing between primary and secondary evaporites, and reconstructing their post-depositional evolution. Seven evaporites phases were recognized: 1. chevron gypsum; 2. nodular to lensoidal gypsum or anhydrite; 3. fibrous to acicular gypsum; 4. mosaic gypsum; 5. brecciated gypsum or gypsarenite; 6. pseudo-nodular anhydrite or gypsum; and 7. rosettes of gypsum. The three first phases of gypsum display petrographic characteristics that conform to a primary nature. The fibrous to acicular and mosaic gypsum were formed by replacement of primary gypsum, but their origin took place during the eodiagenesis, still under influence of the depositional setting. These gypsum morphologies are closely related to the laminated evaporites, serving to demonstrate that their formation was related to replacements that did not affect the primary sedimentary structures. The pseudo-nodular anhydrite or gypsum seems to have originated by mobilization of sulfate-rich fluids during burial, probably related to halokinesis. The rosettes of gypsum, which intercept all the other gypsum varieties, represent the latest phase of evaporite formation in the study area, resulting from either intrastratal waters or surface waters during weathering.

Descrições faciológicas da Formação Codó na área de Grajaú são fornecidas pela primeira vez e suas características sedimentares comparadas àquelas da área de Codó, objetivando a reconstrução paleoambiental. Os depósitos da área de Grajaú incluem evaporitos, calcários e argilitos contendo feições indicativas de ambiente raso, salino, subaquoso, de baixa energia, e exposto a condições meteóricas e/ou capilares. Ciclos de inundação-concentração evaporítica-dissecação sugerem complexo salino rodeado por planícies evaporíticas de lama. A localização do sistema, se costeiro ou continental, é aberto a debate. Entretanto, a última hipótese é favorecida considerando-se: 1. dados isotópicos de Sr com valores mais elevados que aqueles esperados para águas marinhas do Neoaptiano; 2. composição calcítica dos calcários (ao invés de dolomítica e/ou magnesiana, como esperado em ambientes costeiros); e 3. presença de ostracodes continentais e ausência de fauna marinha. Essa interpretação é consistente com aquela proposta para os depósitos aptiano superior da área de Codó, onde o sistema deposicional caracterizou-se por águas anóxicas, bem estratificadas e mais estáveis, com precipitação evaporítica em áreas lacustres centrais. Já na área de Grajaú as depressões salinas foram mais oxigenadas e temporárias, com precipitação de sais em áreas marginais ou ao longo de planícies de lama adjacentes.

Facies descriptions of the Codó Formation in the Grajaú area are provided for the first time, and its sedimentary characteristics compared to those from the Codó area to allow paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Deposits in the Grajaú area include evaporites, limestones and argillites bearing features indicative of a shallow, low energy, subaqueous, saline environment exposed to meteoric and/or capillary conditions. Flooding-evaporative concentration-desiccation cycles suggest a saline pan complex surrounded by extensive evaporitic mudflats. The location of the system, whether coastal or inland, is a matter open for debate. However, the later hypothesis is favored considering: 1. Sr isotopic data, with values higher than those expected for Late Aptian marine waters; 2. calcitic composition of limestones (instead of dolomitic and/or magnesitic as expected in coastal settings); and 3. presence of continental ostracods and lack of marine fauna. This interpretation is consistent with that proposed for UpperAptian deposits of the Codó area, but the depositional system there was one dominated by more stable, well-stratified, anoxic waters and evaporite precipitation in central lacustrine areas, while in the Grajaú area the salt pan was more oxygenated and ephemeral, with salt precipitation mainly in marginal areas or along surrounding mudflats.

A caracterização geológica de depósitos neógenos ocorrentes em sub-superfície rasa no nordeste do Estado do Pará, usando Radar de Penetração no Solo (GPR), revelou a presença de falhas normais e reversas, bem como dobras, ainda não documentadas em estudos de campo prévios. As falhas são identificadas por reflexões inclinadas que cortam bruscamente reflexões vizinhas, causando freqüentes deslocamentos de camadas. As dobras são reconhecidas por reflexões fortemente ondulantes, configurando feições côncavas e convexas que medem até 50 m de amplitude e 80 a 90 m de profundidade. Estas estruturas deformacionais desenvolvem-se, principalmente, em depósitos de idade miocênica, embora algumas falhas possam estender-se, também, a depósitos mais jovens. Embora as seções de GPR estudadas mostrem várias difrações causadas por árvores, umidade do solo, e objetos enterrados, as estruturas registradas aqui não podem ser explicadas por nenhum destes ''ruídos''. A análise detalhada das seções de GPR revelou que as feições deformacionais estudadas estão relacionadas com distorções de camadas causadas por deformações rúptil e dúctil. Embora falhas e dobras não sejam amplamente registradas em depósitos neógenos da Zona Bragantina, os dados aqui apresentados são consistentes com modelos estruturais, que propõem uma evolução complexa incluindo movimentações transcorrentes para esta área, do Mioceno até o presente.

The geological characterization of shallow subsurface Neogene deposits in northeastern Pará State using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) revealed normal and reverse faults, as well as folds, not yet well documented by field studies. The faults are identified mostly by steeply-dipping reflections that sharply cut the nearby reflections causing bed offsets, drags and rollovers. The folds are recognized by reflections that are highly undulating, configuring broad concave and convex-up features that are up to 50 m wide and 80 to 90 ns deep. These deformation structures are mostly developed within deposits of Miocene age, though some of the faults might continue into younger deposits as well. Although the studied GPR sections show several diffractions caused by trees, differential degrees of moisture, and underground artifacts, the structures recorded here can not be explained by any of these ''noises''. The detailed analysis of the GPR sections reveals that they are attributed to bed distortion caused by brittle deformation and folding. The record of faults and folds are not widespread in the Neogene deposits of the Bragantina area. These GPR data are in agreement with structural models, which have proposed a complex evolution including strike-slip motion for this area from the Miocene to present.

Investigação pioneira aplicando Radar de Penetração no Solo (GPR) na área da Praia do Atalaia, norte do Brasil, nos permitiu caracterizar, pela primeira vez, fácies e estratigrafia dos depósitos conhecidos informalmente como Sedimentos Pós-Barreiras (Plioceno e mais recente). Esta sucessão sedimentar recobre discordantemente o embasamento miocênico, representado pelas formações Pirabas/Barreiras. Três unidades estratigráficas foram reconhecidas. A Unidade 1, inferior, consiste em um intervalo com 6 m de espessura média dominado por reflexões pobremente definidas e de baixa amplitude, e que intergradam com reflexões de média escala dos tipos tangencial, obliquo e hummocky. A Unidade 2, intermediária, possui cerca de 9 m de espessura e inclui, principalmente, reflexões oblíquas de larga escala, cujas configurações variam de paralela, tangencial, sigmoidal a sigmoidal-complexa. A Unidade 3, superior, corresponde a um intervalo entre 3,5 e 9 m de espessura, sendo dominada por reflexões hummocky, seguidas por reflexões de média escala dos tipos oblíquo, paralelo a sub-paralelo, e em corte-e-preenchimento. A análise da configuração das reflexões internas e geometria das reflexões nos leva a propor que a unidade correspondente aos Sedimentos Pós-Barreiras é mais variável faciologicamente que inicialmente imaginado, incluindo depósitos eólicos (dunas costeiras), bem como depósitos de cordão litorâneo, planície de maré, canal e mangue. Além disto, o mapeamento das três unidades descritas acima é importante para desvendar a complexidade de sedimentação versus erosão durante o Neógeno tardio no norte do Brasil.

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a geophysical method that consists in the emission of electromagnetic waves of high frequency (between 10-2500 Mhz). This equipment has been increasingly applied for mapping of physical properties and chemical compositions of rocks at shallow depth, as well as for stratigraphic and facies analysis. The application of this methodology in Brazil is still reduced to a few studies, mostly emphasizing soil stratigraphy and eolian paleoenvironments. However, previous studies undertaken in northern Brazil have demonstrated that, in combination with traditional studies using outcrop data, the GPR might be a powerful additional tool to help correlating sedimentary successions and reconstruct depositional environments throughout the Neogene in the Bragantina Zone. In this paper, we will document a pioneer investigation applying a SYR-2 GPR system (Geophysical Survey Systems Inc.) in the Praia do Atalaia area, Salinópolis, northern Brazil, which allowed us to characterize, for the first time, facies and stratigraphy of the deposits known informally as Pós-Barreiras Sediments (Pliocene and younger). The equipment was operated using a 200 Mhz monostatic antenna in continuous mode. The acquired sections were processed using the RADANWIN software in order to increase the reflection resolution and thus allow a refined interpretation of the sections. Based on this procedure, it was noticed that the studied sedimentary succession overlies unconformably the Miocene basement, represented by the Pirabas/Barreiras formations. Three stratigraphic units were also distinguished. The lowermost Unit 1 consists of an interval up to 6 m thick dominated by poorly-defined, low amplitude reflections, which intergrade with medium-scale, tangential oblique and hummocky reflections. This unit revealed to be discontinuous throughout the studied radar sections, occurring mainly where the Miocene basement is depressed. The middle Unit 2 is circa 9 m thick and mostly includes large-scale oblique reflections varying in style from parallel, tangential, sigmoidal to sigmoidal-complex. The two latter ones might reach up to 7 m thick. A strong, high amplitude and laterally continuous reflection marks the top of Unit 2, forming a bounding surface having local depressions of up to 40 m in relief. The uppermost Unit 3 corresponds to an interval ranging from 3.5 to 9 m thick, which is dominated by hummocky reflections, followed by medium-scale oblique, parallel to sub-parallel and cut and fill reflections. The GPR data allows the interpretation that the Pós-Barreiras Sediments were unconformably deposited over the Miocene deposits, as revealed by the mapping of an erosional bounding surface at the base of Unit 1. In addition, the analysis of internal reflection configurations and reflection geometries led us to propose that the Pós-Barreiras Sediments is more variable in terms of facies than previously thought, including eolian deposits (coastal dunes), as well as beach ridge, tidal flat, channel and mangrove deposits. Furthermore, the mapping of the three stratigraphic units described above is important to unravel the complexity of sedimentation versus erosion during the latest Neogene in northern Brazil. The conclusions obtained from the GPR data lead to suggest a drop in relative sea level after the end of the Miocene-lower Pliocene in the Bragantina Zone, which was followed by a transgression and deposition of Unit 1 along embayments and adjacent eolian dunes and/or beach ridges. Renewed phase of relative sea level drop took place, which led to erosion of the uppermost portions of Unit 1, forming a bounding surface that is locally cut by fluvial channel scouring. Large-scale eolian dunes laterally intergraded with tidal flat, filling the depressions formed by channel erosion during a subsequent transgressive phase. At least one more drop in relative sea level appears to have taken place in the study area, as revealed by the discontinuity surface between units 2 and 3, which is in turn mantled by modern sedimentation along mangroves, tidal channels and coastal dune environments.
