Abstract Semi-analytical equations are developed for aiding the process of designing terahertz graphene-based rectangular dipole antennas lying on glass substrates. It directly provides the dipole length required for obtaining resonance at a desired frequency since antenna width and graphene chemical potential are known. By using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, a large number of computational simulations were performed considering several combinations of antenna dimensions and chemical potential values. The simulation results were used along with graphene electrostatic scaling law combined with the least squares method to optimize the formulation coefficients. With the optimized coefficients, we obtain very satisfying accuracy levels. In the frequency range from 0.5 THz to 3.0 THz, the average relative absolute error is 1.50%, with maximum relative absolute error of 6.77%.

Abstract The Amazon region has high lightning occurrence rates, with many lightning hot spots. Different rivers cross the Amazon rainforests and the people that live there use these rivers as roads to go from one place to another. Every year, lightning deaths are reported in the Brazilian Amazon region. In 2018, a lightning discharge struck a small riverboat, which killed 4 people and injured 5 in the North region of Brazil. In this study, we investigate lightning fatalities in Amazon rivers and compute electric field distribution in a small riverboat due to a lightning strike using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The results show that the electric field produced inside the boat is large enough to cause air breakdown. Additionally, we propose a cost-effective method to improve lightning safety for people that use small boats in the Amazon region.

Abstract In this paper, a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) formulation, based on the exponential matrix and on thin material sheet methods is developed for modeling subcellular thin graphene sheets. This formulation is validated by reproducing graphene frequency selective surfaces (FSS) known from literature. Then, we propose in this work a smart graphene FSS device. Smartness is obtained by means of a unity cell formed by a graphene ring with a graphene sheet placed in its aperture. By properly regulating the chemical potentials of the graphene elements, two frequency- tunable modus operandi are obtained: single- or dual-band rejection modes. When the device operates in its dual-band rejection mode, either of the rejection bands can be shifted individually in the frequency spectrum. Additionally, both rejection bands can also be reconfigured simultaneously.

Abstract: Periungual basal cell carcinoma is rare and needs to be differentiated from other common diseases that affect this region. Several factors are associated with the development of this tumor, and sun damage seems to play an important role in its pathogenesis. Dermoscopy of clinically indolent lesions on the nail unit can shorten the diagnostic process and avoid destructive treatment and functional damage.

Abstract It is shown that proper representation of transmitting and receiving antennas in indoor environments are decisive for accurate prediction of electromagnetic power transfer parameters using the standard 3D-FDTD method. With the standard Yee method, it is not always possible to precisely describe all the geometrical details of electrically small antennas. A new approach for description of the discone antenna in uniform 3D-FDTD lattice is presented. The calculations are validated by comparing FDTD results with the polyhedral beam-tracing method and experimental data.

In the Americas, areas with a high risk of malaria transmission are mainly located in the Amazon Forest, which extends across nine countries. One keystone step to understanding the Plasmodium life cycle in Anopheles species from the Amazon Region is to obtain experimentally infected mosquito vectors. Several attempts to colonise Ano- pheles species have been conducted, but with only short-lived success or no success at all. In this review, we review the literature on malaria transmission from the perspective of its Amazon vectors. Currently, it is possible to develop experimental Plasmodium vivax infection of the colonised and field-captured vectors in laboratories located close to Amazonian endemic areas. We are also reviewing studies related to the immune response to P. vivax infection of Anopheles aquasalis, a coastal mosquito species. Finally, we discuss the importance of the modulation of Plasmodium infection by the vector microbiota and also consider the anopheline genomes. The establishment of experimental mosquito infections with Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium yoelii and Plasmodium berghei parasites that could provide interesting models for studying malaria in the Amazonian scenario is important. Understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of the parasites in New World vectors is crucial in order to better determine the interaction process and vectorial competence.

O fenômeno de Lúcio representa uma reação cutânea necrosante grave que pode ocorrer na hanseníase de Lúcio e em outras formas de hanseníase virchowiana. Os autores relatam o caso de um paciente masculino de 63 anos de idade apresentando há um ano lesões ulceronecróticas nos membros, lóbulos auriculares e tronco, associadas a sinusite de repetição, rouquidão e perda ponderal de 25 kg. A baciloscopia de raspado intradérmico mostrou índice baciloscópico de 5 e o exame histopatologico foi compatível com fenômeno de Lúcio. O tratamento instituído foi exclusivamente com poliquimioterapia multibacilar (PQT-MB), havendo melhora importante do quadro cutâneo após um mês de tratamento. Os autores apresentam um caso exuberante de fenômeno de Lúcio que obteve excelente resposta ao tratamento somente com PQT-MB.

Lucio's phenomenon represents a serious cutaneous necrotizing reaction, which can occur with Lucio's leprosy and also in other forms of lepromatous leprosy. The authors discuss the case of a 63-year-old male patient presenting with ulcers and necrotic cutaneous lesions on the limbs, torso and face, associated with recurring sinusitis, hoarseness and a weight loss of 25 kilos over the last year. Bacilloscopy of intradermal scrapings showed a bacilloscopic index of 5 and the histopathological findings were compatible with the diagnosis of Lucio's phenomenon. The chosen treatment was exclusively multibacillary multidrug therapy, resulting in important dermatological improvement after one month of therapy. The authors present an impressive case of Lucio's phenomenon with an exceptional response to treatment exclusively with multibacillary multidrug therapy.

A endometriose cutânea é forma rara de endometriose, representando de 0,5% a 1% de todos os casos da doença. Pode ser dividida em forma primária, de surgimento espontâneo, ou secundária, após procedimentos cirúrgicos aonde geralmente encontra-se sobre a cicatriz cirúrgica. Diversas etiologias foram propostas, porém, nenhuma capaz de explicar inteiramente seu aparecimento. Diagnósticos diferenciais incluem melanoma, nódulos metastáticos, quelóide e granuloma piogênico. A dermatoscopia da lesão ainda não foi bem estabelecida, mas existem alguns achados que podem sugerir o diagnóstico. O tratamento é cirúrgico nos casos de lesões maiores e o screening para endometriose é mandatório através de avaliação ginecológica, de imagem e marcador tumoral. Relatamos um caso de endometriose cutânea primária e discutimos seus aspectos dermatoscópicos.

Cutaneous endometriosis is a rare manifestation of endometriosis, representing 0.5% to 1% of all endometriosis cases. It can be divided into primary and secondary, when appearing spontaneously or after a surgical procedure, when it is mostly found on surgical scar tissue. Some etiologies were proposed, but none of them could entirely explain the appearance of the tumor. Differential diagnosis includes melanoma, metastatic nodule, keloid and pyogenic granuloma. Dermoscopic features are not yet well established, but there are some characteristics that suggest the diagnosis. Treatment is surgical in larger sized lesions. Malignization can occur. The screening for endometriosis is mandatory by means of gynecologic, imaging and marked-tumor evaluation. We report a case of primary umbilical endometriosis and discuss its dermoscopic aspects.

Eritroqueratodermia simétrica progressiva é uma genodermatose rara de herança autossômica dominante, com penetrância variável, descrita por Darier em 1911. E caracterizada por placas eritematosas e queratósicas, bem delimitadas, simetricamente distribuídas ao longo das extremidades, nádegas e mais raramente face. Os autores relatam o caso de uma paciente de 55 anos apresentando lesões no dorso das mãos, coxins interfalangeanos, punhos, região inguinal e dorso dos pés. O caso demonstra raridade, diagnóstico tardio, exuberância clínica e acometimento familial.

Progressive symmetrical erythrokeratodermia is a rare autosomal dominant genodermatosis with variable penetrance described by Darier in 1911. It is characterized by erythematous and keratotic plaques, sharply defined and symmetrically distributed along the extremities, buttocks and, more rarely, on the face. We report a case of a 55-year-old patient with lesions on the dorsum of the hands, interphalangeal pads, wrists, groin and back feet. This case demonstrates a rare and late diagnosis, clinical profusion and presence of familiar involvement.

CA88 is the first long nuclear repetitive DNA sequence identified in the blood fluke, Schistosoma mansoni. The assembled S. mansoni sequence, which contains the CA88 repeat, has 8,887 nucleotides and at least three repeat units of approximately 360 bp. In addition, CA88 also possesses an internal CA microsatellite, identified as SmBr18. Both PCR and BLAST analysis have been used to analyse and confirm the CA88 sequence in other S. mansoni sequences in the public database. PCR-acquired nuclear repetitive DNA sequence profiles from nine Schistosoma species were used to classify this organism into four genotypes. Included among the nine species analysed were five sequences of both African and Asian lineages that are known to infect humans. Within these genotypes, three of them refer to recognised species groups. A panel of four microsatellite loci, including SmBr18 and three previously published loci, has been used to characterise the nine Schistosoma species. Each species has been identified and classified based on its CA88 DNA fingerprint profile. Furthermore, microsatellite sequences and intra-specific variation have also been observed within the nine Schistosoma species sequences. Taken together, these results support the use of these markers in studying the population dynamics of Schistosoma isolates from endemic areas and also provide new methods for investigating the relationships between different populations of parasites. In addition, these data also indicate that Schistosoma magrebowiei is not a sister taxon to Schistosoma mattheei, prompting a new designation to a basal clade.

Sequence variation among different hepatitis C virus (HCV) isolates has adaptive significance and reflects the modes and intensities of selection mechanisms operating on the virus. In this work, we sought to investigate using classical population genetics parameters, the genetic variability of HCV genotype 1 using the 5' UTR and NS5A regions from treatment non-responding and responding groups of patients. Both regions showed low genetic varia-bility and the 5' UTR showed neutral deviation. No differences were observed in the nonsynonymous/synonymous nucleotide substitution ratio among groups for NS5A. The analysis of molecular variance test of the 5' UTR region showed an 11.94% variation among groups. Phylogenetic analysis showed no correlation between sequence variations and therapeutic responses.
