ABSTRACT This study aimed to assess an alkaline protease supplemented in diets with and without crude protein (CP) reduction on performance, apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD), blood parameters, and carcass and meat traits in growing-finishing pigs. Forty male pigs (26.2±1.2 kg) were randomly allocated into one of five treatments: negative control (NC, 2% and 1% reduction of CP in grower and finisher phases, respectively, no protease); NC150: NC + 150 mg protease kg−1 diet; NC300: NC + 300 mg protease kg−1 diet; PC: positive control (no CP reduction and protease); and PC300: PC + 300 mg protease kg−1 diet, with eight replicates of one pig/pen. Pigs fed NC showed greater average daily feed intake (ADFI) than pigs fed NC300 or PC and lower ADFI compared to pigs fed NC150. Pigs fed PC had lower ADFI than those fed PC300. Greater average daily gain and gain to feed ratio (G:F) were observed in pigs on NC compared with those on NC300 or NC150 and NC300, respectively. Pigs fed PC showed better G:F than pigs fed PC300. Lower coefficients of ATTD (CTTAD) of dry and organic matter (OM), digestible dry matter (DDM), digestible organic matter (DOM), and digestible protein were observed in growing II pigs fed NC compared with pigs fed NC150 or NC300. Pigs fed NC showed a lower DP compared with PC or NC150. Positive control group showed increased digestible protein compared with NC. Finishing II pigs fed NC showed lower DDM, DOM, CTTAD of OM, and gross energy than pigs fed NC150 or NC300. Pigs fed PC showed greater albumin concentration compared with pigs fed PC300 in finishing II. Pigs fed NC and PC300 showed greater luminosity in the l. thoracis muscle than pigs fed PC. A greater color score was evidenced in the l. thoracis in pigs fed PC compared with pigs fed PC300. ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate the stability and efficacy of the double-flanged 5-0 polypropylene suture to fixate subluxated cataracts at 18 months and the possible complications of this new technique Methods: This technique uses a 5-0 polypropylene monofilament to create two flanges with a thermocautery, for fixation of a capsular tension segment to the sclera to fix the subluxated capsular bag. This technique was implemented in 17 eyes requiring intraocular lens implantation in a setting of zonular dialysis due to trauma, Marfan syndrome, microspherophakia, idiopathic disease, and post-phacoemulsification status. Results: Follow-up of the patients occurred at 18 months. Best-corrected visual acuity improved significantly from 0.85 to 0.39 (logMAR), whereas the spherical and cylindrical refractive errors and intraocular pressure remained stable from preoperation. No suture photodegradation or pseudophacodonesis were detected. Conclusion: The double-flanged 5-0 polypropylene suture transscleral bag fixation technique has shown favorable long-term outcomes in terms of bag intraocular lens/complex fixation and stability. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a estabilidade e eficácia da técnica double-flanged com sutura de 5-0 polipropileno para fixação de cataratas subluxadas aos 18 meses e as possíveis complicações desta nova técnica. Métodos: Esta técnica utiliza um monofilamento de polipropileno 5-0 para criar dois flanges com um termocautério para fixar um Segmento de Tensão Capsular na esclera a fim de estabilizar o saco capsular subluxado. Esta técnica foi implementada em 17 olhos que necessitavam do implante de lente intraocular em casos de diálise zonular devido a trauma, síndrome de Marfan, microesferofacia, subluxação idiopática ou pós-facoemulsificação que provocou subulxação do saco capsular intraoperatória. Resultados: O seguimento dos pacientes foi de 18 meses. A acuidade visual corrigida melhorou significativamente de 0,85 para 0,39 (logMAR), enquanto os erros de refração esféricos e cilíndricos e a pressão intraocular permaneceram estáveis. Nenhuma fotodegradação de sutura ou pseudofacodonese foi encontrada. Resumo Fundamento O tecido adiposo epicárdico (TAE) tem sido associado à fibrilação atrial (FA), mas seus mecanismos fisiopatológicos permanecem obscuros. Objetivos Medir a correlação entre TAE e fibrose do átrio esquerdo (AE), e avaliar sua capacidade de prever recidiva após o isolamento da veia pulmonar (IVP). Métodos Pacientes com FA inscritos para um primeiro procedimento de IVP foram submetidos à tomografia computadorizada (TC) cardíaca e ressonância magnética cardíaca (RMC) em menos de 48 horas. Quantificou-se o TAECE em imagens de TC realçadas com contraste no nível do tronco da coronária esquerda. Quantificou-se a fibrose do AE em RMC tridimensional com realce tardio isotrópico de 1,5 mm. Após o isolamento da veia pulmonar (IVP), os pacientes foram submetidos a seguimento para checar a recidiva da FA. A significância estatística foi definida com p<0,05. Resultados A maioria dos 68 pacientes (46 homens, idade 61±12 anos) tinha FA paroxística (71%, n=48). Os pacientes apresentavam volume TAECE mediano de 2,4 cm3/m2 (intervalo interquartil [IIQ] 1,6–3,2 cm3/m2) e um volume médio de fibrose do AE de 8,9 g (IIQ 5–15 g). A correlação entre TAECE e fibrose do AE foi estatisticamente significativa, mas fraca (coeficiente de correlação de postos de Spearman = 0,40, p=0,001). Durante um seguimento médio de 22 meses (IIQ 12–31), 31 pacientes (46%) tiveram recidiva da FA. A análise multivariada produziu dois preditores independentes de recidiva da FA: TAECE (FC 2,05, IC de 95% 1,51–2,79, p<0,001) e FA não paroxística (FC 2,36, IC de 95% 1,08–5,16, p=0,031). Conclusão A correlação fraca entre TAE e AE sugere que a fibrose do AE não é o principal mecanismo que liga o TAE e a FA. O TAE mostrou-se mais fortemente associado à recidiva da FA do que à fibrose do AE, corroborando a existência de outros mediadores mais importantes do TAE e da FA.

Abstract Background Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) has been associated with atrial fibrillation (AF), but its pathophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. Objectives To measure the correlation between EAT and left atrium (LA) fibrosis, and to assess their ability to predict relapse after pulmonary vein isolation (PVI). Methods Patients with AF enrolled for a first PVI procedure underwent both cardiac computerized tomography (CT) and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging within less than 48 hours. EATLMwas quantified on contrast-enhanced CT images at the level of the left main. LA fibrosis was quantified on isotropic 1.5 mm 3D delayed enhancement CMR. After pulmonary vein isolation (PVI), patients were followed up for AF relapse. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. Results Most of the 68 patients (46 men, age 61±12 years) had paroxysmal AF (71%, n=48). Patients had a median EATLMvolume of 2.4 cm3/m2(interquartile range [IQR] 1.6–3.2 cm3/m2), and a median amount of LA fibrosis of 8.9 g (IQR 5–15 g). The correlation between EATLMand LA fibrosis was statistically significant but weak (Spearman’s R=0.40, p=0.001). During a median follow-up of 22 months (IQR 12–31), 31 patients (46%) had AF relapse. Multivariate analysis yielded two independent predictors of AF relapse: EATLM(HR 2.05, 95% CI 1.51–2.79, p<0.001), and non-paroxysmal AF (HR 2.36, 95% CI 1.08–5.16, p=0.031). Conclusion The weak correlation between EAT and LA suggests that LA fibrosis is not the main mechanism linking EAT and AF. EAT was more strongly associated with AF relapse than LA fibrosis, supporting the existence of other more important mediators of EAT and AF.

ABSTRACT The knowledge on cultivars is essential for parental choosing on breeding programs. This research aimed to study the genetic divergence of Coffea arabica L. cultivars from a germoplasm bank of the Embrapa Cerrados, Brazil, for leaf anatomic and physiological characteristics. RESUMO O conhecimento das cultivares é essencial para a escolha dos pais em programas de melhoramento. Objetivou-se estudar a divergência genética de cultivares de Coffea arabica L. de um banco de germoplasma da Embrapa Cerrados, quanto às características anatômicas foliares e fisiológicas. RESUMO Objetivo: Descrever uma técnica cirúrgica inovadora para transplante de olho em um modelo animal em coelhos. Métodos: Seis coelhos machos com Dutch Belted foram submetidos à orbitotomia lateral do olho direito, com ampla exposição da anatomia retrobulbar, dissecção do cone muscular, exposição e secção distal do nervo óptico seguida de anastomose por vicryl (Grupo 1) ou cola de fibrina (Grupo 2). O registro da eletrorretinografia foi realizado antes da secção do nervo óptico e a cada 30 segundos após, para monitorar a função da retina. O olho esquerdo foi usado como grupo controle. Resultados: Após a ressecção do nervo óptico, a estabilidade da amplitude da eletrorretinografia foi perdida no olho direito após 302 segundos no Grupo 1 e após 296 segundos no Grupo 2. O olho esquerdo manteve eletrorretinografia estável por períodos mais longos. Conclusão: O modelo animal de transplante total de olho foi eficaz em descrever uma nova técnica cirúrgica para ser utilizada em laboratório com coelhos, com sucesso do procedimento anatômico. Novos estudos esclarecerão os melhores métodos de anastomose e manutenção da função do órgão receptor.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To describe an innovative animal model of eye transplantation used in rabbits. Methods: six Dutch-belted male rabbits were submitted to lateral orbitotomy in the right eye, wide retrobulbar anatomy exposure, dissection of the structures, identification and distal section of the optic nerve followed by anastomosis either by vicryl (group 1) or fibrin glue (group 2). Electroretinography recording was performed before the section of the optic nerve and every 30 seconds after, to monitor the function of retina. Left eye was used as control group. Results: After optic nerve resection and anastomosis, stable ERG amplitude of the right eye was lost after 302 seconds in group 1 and after 296 seconds on group 2. Left eye kept longer stable ERG amplitude curves. Conclusions: The animal model of whole eye transplantation was effective in describing a novel technique to be used in rabbits, with success of the anatomic procedure. Further studies will clarify the best anastomosis methods and maintenance of function of the receptor organ. Translational relevance: this animal model of whole eye transplantation provides a novel perspective for blind patients and the research models, since we describe a novel mammal animal model. This model can be used as basis of a human model of whole eye transplantation in future studies.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi construir e validar um algoritmo e desenvolver um software do tipo aplicativo móvel para o diagnóstico multidimensional da vulnerabilidade clínico funcional e tratamento fisioterapêutico em idosos. Trata-se de um estudo analítico, observacional, aplicado na modalidade de produção tecnológica, baseado na engenharia de software e fundamentada no design centrado no usuário. O algoritmo foi elaborado a partir de estudos em bases de dados da área da saúde, validado por 13 fisioterapeutas e a construção do software deu-se através da linguagem JAVA, a partir da conversão do algoritmo. Para validação do conteúdo do algoritmo, foi utilizada a técnica Delphi e análise estatística do Índice de Validade de Conteúdo (IVC). O consenso foi atingido logo na primeira rodada de avaliação, a concordância entre juízes pelo IVC foi de 1,0. O aplicativo móvel Gerontofisio foi construído para uso em smartphones e tablets, registrado no Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial número: BR512020002269-3 e possui 34 telas que orientam fisioterapeutas gerontólogos nas tomadas de decisão, servindo como ferramenta de apoio nos campos de aplicação em saúde, administração sanitária, doença, assistência médica e terapia diagnóstica. Dessa forma, o algoritmo foi construído e validado, o software do tipo aplicativo móvel para o diagnóstico multidimensional da vulnerabilidade clínico funcional e tratamento fisioterapêutico em idosos foi desenvolvido, é válido na área de fisioterapia e deve contribuir para fisioterapeutas e pessoas idosas.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to build and validate an algorithm and develop a software for the multidimensional diagnosis of functional clinical vulnerability and physical therapy for older adults. This is an analytical and observational study applied in technological production, based on software engineering and user-centered design. The algorithm was developed based on studies in health databases, validated by 13 physical therapists and the software was built using the JAVA language from the algorithm’s conversion. The Delphi technique and statistical analysis via the Content Validity Index (CVI) were used to validate the algorithm. The consensus was reached in the first evaluation round and the agreement between judges by the CVI was 1.0. The “Gerontofisio” mobile application was built for use on smartphones and tablets and registered at the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property number: BR512020002269-3; the application consists of 34 screens that guide gerontological physical therapists in decision making, serving as a support tool in the applied fields in health, health administration, illness, medical assistance and diagnostic therapy. The algorithm was built and validated, the mobile application software for the multidimensional diagnosis of clinical functional vulnerability and physical therapy treatment in older adults was developed and is valid in the field of physical therapy and should contribute to physical therapists and older adults.

El algoritmo se desarrolló a partir de estudios en bases de datos del área de salud, validados por 13 fisioterapeutas y la construcción del software se realizó a través del lenguaje JAVA, a partir de la conversión del algoritmo. Para validar el contenido del algoritmo se utilizó la técnica Delphi y el análisis estadístico del Índice de Validez de Contenido (IVC). Se alcanzó consenso en la primera ronda de evaluación, el acuerdo entre jueces para el IVC fue 1.0. La aplicación móvil Gerontofisio fue construida para su uso en teléfonos inteligentes y tabletas, registrada en el Instituto Nacional de la Propiedad Industrial número: BR512020002269-3, cuenta con 34 pantallas que guían a los fisioterapeutas gerontólogos en la toma de decisiones, sirviendo como herramienta de apoyo en los campos de aplicación en Salud, Administración de la salud, Enfermedad, Atención médica y Terapia diagnóstica. Así, se construyó y validó el algoritmo, se desarrolló el software de aplicación móvil para el diagnóstico multidimensional de la vulnerabilidad funcional clínica y el tratamiento de fisioterapia en ancianos, que es válido en el campo de la fisioterapia y debe contribuir a fisioterapeutas y personas mayores.

RESUMO: O aumento na deposição de gordura e da conversão alimentar durante a fase de terminação são fatores que implicam diretamente na qualidade da carne e também na rentabilidade da cadeia produtiva. Apesar disso, o abate tardio dos suínos pode resultar em benefícios para o frigorífico, pela redução dos custos operacionais por suíno abatido e melhor utilização dos equipamentos, bem como vantagens econômicas para o produtor resultantes da diluição dos custos de produção. Portanto, a suplementação de cromo na ração de suínos de linhagens com maior potencial para deposição de músculo, é uma estratégia para aumentar a deposição de tecido magro e minimizar a deposição de gordura, refletindo positivamente no desempenho. Em vista disso, objetivou-se com este trabalho, apresentar e discutir os mecanismos de ação, finalidades e resultados recentes de estudos na literatura sobre a suplementação desse modificador de carcaça na ração de suínos em terminação. O principal papel do cromo é potencializar a ação da insulina, facilitando a ligação entre a insulina e os seus receptores na membrana celular. Com isso, as células sensíveis à insulina captam maior quantidade de glicose, que posteriormente serão convertidas em energia. Essa energia adicional pode ser utilizada para aumentar a síntese proteica, aumentando assim, a quantidade de carne magra e reduzindo o teor de gordura na carcaça, sem alterar o consumo de proteína pelos animais. O cromo também diminui a taxa de oxidação lipídica, mantendo a qualidade da carne por mais tempo. Em conclusão, a suplementação dietética de Cr para suínos em terminação mostra que 0,2 mg/kg de fontes orgânicas de Cr para suínos de ~ 60 kg até o abate podem melhorar o desempenho, ganho de massa magra e reduzir o teor de gordura na carcaça. No entanto, o desenvolvimento da nanotecnologia tem permitido o uso de fonte inorgânica de Cr na dose de 0,2 mg/kg de inclusão, melhorando o desempenho e as características de carcaça de suínos em terminação.

ABSTRACT: Increasing fat deposition and feed conversion ratio over the days in finishing phase directly influence pork quality and productive profitability. Nonetheless, the slaughter of heavier pigs can result in benefits for the slaughterhouse due to dilution of production and processing costs, as well as economic benefits for the pig producer resulting from the dilution of production costs. Therefore, dietary supplementation of chromium for finishing pigs of high lean-genotypes is a strategy to increase lean tissue accretion and minimize fat deposition, reflecting positively on growth performance. This review discussed recent studies results and mechanisms of action of this modifier of performance and carcass a traits in finishing pigs. Chromium increases the insulin action, facilitating insulin binding to the receptors on cell membrane. As a result, insulin-sensitive cells uptake more glucose, which will be later converted into energy. This additional energy is use to increase protein synthesis, thereby increasing the amount of lean tissue and reducing fat content in the carcass, without altering protein intake by pigs. Chromium also reduces lipid oxidation rate maintaining meat quality for longer period. In conclusion, dietary Cr supplementation for finishing pigs have shown that 0.2 mg/kg of organic Cr sources for pigs from ~60 kg until the slaughter can improve growth performance, lean gain and reduce fat content in carcass. However, the development of nanotechnology has allowed the use of inorganic Cr source at 0.2 mg/kg of inclusion, leading to improve the growth performance and carcass traits of finishing pigs.

RESUMO Objetivo Determinar a proporção de pacientes com asma com percepção inadequada do mau controle de sua doença. Métodos Estudo transversal com amostra de conveniência de pacientes com asma e idade ≥18 anos. Avaliou-se o controle da asma por meio do Asthma Control Test e do questionário do Global Initiative for Asthma. Utilizou-se o coeficiente Kappa para análise da concordância entre os resultados desses testes e a percepção do controle da asma pelo paciente, definida pela resposta a uma questão do Asthma Control Test: “Como você avalia o controle da sua asma durante as últimas 4 semanas?”. Resultados Entre os 71 pacientes com idades entre 19 e 81 anos e média de 57,7±13,9 anos, existiam 27 (38%) controlados, segundo o Asthma Control Test, e 18 (25,3%) de acordo com o questionário do Global Initiative for Asthma. Os coeficientes de Kappa entre os resultados desses testes e a percepção do controle pelos pacientes foram, respectivamente, 0,4 e 0,29. Entre os 41 (57,7%) pacientes que se consideravam controlados, 18 (43,9%) tinham percepção inapropriada do seu mau controle, de acordo com o Asthma Control Test, e 25 (61%) segundo o Global Initiative for Asthma. Conclusão Aplicando-se o Asthma Control Test, observou-se que quase metade dos participantes tinha percepção inadequada de seu mau controle da doença e, segundo o questionário da Global Initiative for Asthma, mais da metade da amostra não percebeu o descontrole da asma.

ABSTRACT Objective To determine the proportion of patients with asthma with misperception of poor control of their disease. Methods A cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of patients with asthma and aged ≥18 years. Asthma control was assessed by the Asthma Control Test and the Global Initiative for Asthma questionnaire. The Kappa coefficient was used to analyze the agreement between the results of these tests and the patients’ perception of asthma control, defined by the response to one question of the Asthma Control Test: “How do you evaluate your asthma control during the last 4 weeks?”. Results Among the 71 patients aged 19 to 81 years and a mean of 57.7±13.9 years, there were 27 (38%) controlled, according to the Asthma Control Test, and 18 (25.3%) using the Global Initiative for Asthma questionnaire. The Kappa coefficients of the results of these tests and the perception of control by the patients were 0.4 and 0.29, respectively. Among the 41 (57.7%) patients who considered themselves controlled, 18 (43.9%) had a misperception of their poor control, as per the Asthma Control Test, and 25 (61%) by the Global Initiative for Asthma. Conclusion Applying the Asthma Control Test, it was observed that almost half of the participants had a misperception of their poor control of the disease and, according to the Global Initiative for Asthma questionnaire, more than half of the sample did not notice the lack of asthma control.

RESUMO Introdução: Os métodos bidimensionais (2D) de avaliação dinâmica de valgo de joelho são populares devido ao baixo custo e à grande facilidade de implementação. Acredita-se que o valgo dinâmico do joelho seja um dos principais responsáveis pelas lesões do ligamento cruzado anterior sem contato direto. Existem duas categorias de confiabilidade com relação aos coletores de dados: confiabilidade entre vários coletores, que é a confiabilidade interavaliador e a confiabilidade de um único coletor de dados, denominada confiabilidade intra-avaliador. Objetivos: Avaliar a confiabilidade intra e interavaliadores durante o Step Down Test em atletas profissionais de futebol, utilizando angulações iniciais e finais de cada repetição do teste. Métodos: A amostra foi composta por 29 jogadores de futebol profissional. Todos os participantes do estudo foram considerados livres de qualquer lesão musculoesquelética por fisioterapeutas do clube e estavam realizando tarefas diárias de treinamento. Dois avaliadores do sexo masculino participaram do estudo. Resultados: Para cada grupo de dados, a média e o desvio padrão foram determinados. A confiabilidade intra e interavaliadores de todos os dados foi determinada pelo coeficiente de correlação intraclasse (ICC), com intervalo de confiança de 95% e alfa de p ≤ 0,05. O avaliador 1 foi classificado no primeiro passo intra-avaliador da análise para toque do calcanhar com boa a excelente confiabilidade. Para análise interavaliadores, tanto para o toque do calcanhar quanto para maior ângulo valgo, houve excelente confiabilidade entre os avaliadores. Conclusão: Existe alta confiabilidade interavaliador e intra-avaliador por meio da análise bidimensional utilizando o Teste Step Down em atletas profissionais de futebol. ABSTRACT Introduction: The two-dimensional (2D) methods of dynamic assessment of knee valgus are popular because of their low cost and the fact that they are easy to implement. It is believed that dynamic valgus of the knee is one of the main disorders responsible for non-contact lesions of the anterior cruciate ligament. There are two categories of reliability with regard to data collectors: inter-rater (reliability among multiple data collectors) and intra-rater (reliability of a single data collector). Objectives: To assess intra and inter-rater reliability during the step-down test in professional soccer athletes, using initial and final angles for each test repetition. Methods: The sample consisted of 29 professional soccer players. All study participants were considered by club physiotherapists to be free of any musculoskeletal injury and were performing daily training tasks. Two male evaluators participated in the study. Results: For each data group, mean and standard deviation were determined. The intra- and inter-rater reliability of all data was determined using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), with a confidence interval of 95% and alpha of p ≤ 0.05. Rater 1 was classified in the first intra-rater stage of the analysis for heel touch, with good to excellent reliability. For the inter-rater analysis, both for heel touch and for greater valgus angle, there was excellent reliability among the raters. Conclusion: It was concluded that there is high inter-rater and intra-rater reliability through two-dimensional analysis using the Step Down Test in professional soccer athletes. RESUMEN Introducción: Los métodos bidimensionales (2D) de evaluación dinámica de valgo de rodilla son populares debido al bajo costo y a la gran facilidad de implementación. Se cree que el valgo dinámico de rodilla sea uno de los principales responsables por las lesiones del ligamiento cruzado anterior sin contacto directo. Existen dos categorías de confiabilidad con relación a los colectores de datos: confiabilidad entre varios colectores, que es la confiablidad interevaluador y la confiabilidad de un único colector de datos, denominada confiabilidad intraevaluador. Objetivos: Evaluar la confiabilidad intra e interevaluadores durante el Step Down Test en atletas profesionales de fútbol, utilizando angulaciones iniciales y finales de cada repetición del test. Métodos: La amuestra fue compuesta por 29 jugadores de fútbol profesional. Todos los participantes del estudio fueron considerados libres de cualquier lesión musculoesquelética por fisioterapeutas del club y estaban realizando tareas diarias de entrenamiento. Dos evaluadores de sexo masculino participaron del estudio. Resultados: Para cada grupo de datos, fueron determinados el promedio y la derivación estándar. La confiabilidad intra e interevaluadores de todos los datos fue determinada por el coeficiente de correlación intraclase (ICC), con intervalo de confianza de 95% y alfa de p ≤ 0,05. El evaluador 1 fue clasificado en el primer paso interevaluador del análisis para toque del talón con buena a excelente confiabilidad. Para análisis interevaluadores tanto para o toque del talón como para mayor ángulo valgo, hubo excelente confiabilidad entre los evaluadores. Conclusión: Existe alta confiabilidad interevaluador e intraevaluador por medio del análisis bidimensional utilizando el Test Step Down en atletas profesionales de fútbol. Nivel de evidencia II; Desarrollo de criterios diagnósticos en pacientes consecutivos (con estándar de referencia “oro” aplicado).

ABSTRACT The objective was to evaluate whether the 10-RM test can be applied to both trained and untrained people in elbow flexor strengthening exercises. The sample consisted of 23 men aged between 18 and 30 years old, of which 11 were untrained (NT - control group), and 12 were resistance-trained (TR - trained group). The experiment started with a specific warm-up session followed by collections of myoelectric signals from the brachial biceps muscle, bilaterally, in Maximum Voluntary Isometric Contractions (MVIC), the 10-RM test for elbow flexion and the new MVIC, followed by deceleration. By analyzing each contraction separately contraction, a significant increase in RMS (Root Mean Square) was found by a normalized MVIC with regard to 1st contraction, starting from the 3rd repetition for the TR group. When comparing each contraction of the 10-RM test with the previous one, a significant reduction of MF (Median Frequency) between the 5th and the 6th repetition of the TR group was observed. It was concluded that the Test of 10 Maximum Repetitions should be reconsidered when performed for purposes of comparison between sides of the body. Also, when considering the probable fatigue caused by the successive movements, a better application of tests with 6 to 8 repetitions was suggested.

RESUMO: O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o efeito do ácido guanidinoacético (GAA) no desempenho de leitões, bem como um possível mecanismo de ação molecular no ganho de massa magra. Setenta e dois leitões, desmamados aos 21 dias, pesando 6,80 ± 1,2 kg, foram distribuídos em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado com três tratamentos dietéticos (controle, controle + 1,2 g / kg ou controle + 2,4 g / kg GAA) e 8 repetições por tratamento. A dieta controle não continha proteína animal e foi formulada a base de milho e farelo de soja. O desempenho dos animais foi avaliado aos 35, 49 e 56 dias. Ao final do experimento, um animal por unidade experimental foi abatido e amostras do músculo Vastus lateralis foram coletadas para análise de RT-qPCR e abundância de proteínas. A suplementação com GAA melhorou a eficiência alimentar (P<0,03) aos 56 dias. O músculo dos leitões suplementados apresentou maior expressão de mRNA de Akt (P<0,04) e RPS6KB2 (P <0,01). Em conclusão, a suplementação de 2,4 g / kg de GAA em leitões (21 a 56 d) melhora a eficiência alimentar e ativa mecanismos moleculares importantes para o ganho de massa magra.

ABSTRACT: The objective with the present study was to evaluate the effect of guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) on the growth performance of nursery piglets as well as a possible molecular mechanism of action on lean mass gain. Seventy-two pigs, weaned at 21 d, weighing 6.80 ± 1.2 kg were distributed in a completely randomized design into one of three dietary treatments (control, control + 1.2 g/kg GAA or control + 2.4 g/kg GAA) and 8 replicates per treatment. The control diet was an animal protein-free diet based on corn and soybean meal. Body weight, average daily weight gain, average daily feed intake and feed efficiency were evaluated at 35, 49, and 56 days. At the end of the experiment, one animal per pen was slaughtered and samples of the vastus lateralis muscle were collected for RT-qPCR and protein abundance analysis. Overall (from 21 to 56 d), GAA supplementation improved feed efficiency (P < 0.03). Skeletal muscle of pigs fed with GAA diet had greater mRNA expression of Akt (P < 0.04) and RPS6KB2 (P<0.01). In conclusion, supplementation with 2.4 g/kg GAA to nursery piglets improves feed efficiency and activates molecular mechanisms important to lean mass gain.

ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to compare the effects of corn processing on performance and intestinal parameters of weanling piglets. To accomplish our goal, 42 piglets (21 days-old, 7.18±1.0 kg body weight) were randomly allocated (seven pens/treatment; three pigs/pen) to one of two treatments: ground corn – corn ground through a hammer mill with a 1.0-mm screen after being ground by a hammer mill with a 3.0-mm screen, and extruded corn – corn was wet extruded after being ground by a hammer mill with a 2.0-mm screen and, after extrusion, it was ground by a hammer mill with a 1.0-mm screen. In both methods, corn from the same batch was used. Results were considered statistically significant when P<0.05 and a tendency when P<0.10. Analyses were performed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS. Pigs fed ground or extruded corn diet had similar growth performance. Duodenum and jejunum of pigs fed extruded corn had greater villus height compared with those of pigs fed ground corn. Crypt depth was not influenced by corn processing. Duodenum and jejunum of pigs fed extruded corn had greater villus:crypt ratio compared with those of pigs fed ground corn. In the duodenum, the expression of zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) was greater, and the expression of Occludin-1 tended to be greater in pigs fed the extruded corn diets. There was no effect of corn processing on ZO-1 and Occludin-1 expression in the jejunum, nor TGF-β1 expression in duodenum and jejunum. There was no effect of the type of corn processing on colonic total bacteria or Enterobacteriaceae and Lactobacillus abundance. Piglets fed diets with ground corn or extruded corn have similar growth performance. However, piglets fed diets with extruded corn present improved intestinal morphology and tight junction protein expression compared with those fed ground corn.

RESUMO A melancieira é uma cucurbitácea cultivada em várias regiões do Brasil, principalmente, em áreas de sequeiro, sujeito aos riscos da irregularidade das chuvas. O hidrogel é um condicionador do solo utilizado para reter e disponibilizar água para as plantas por períodos prolongados. Assim, a incorporação do hidrogel no solo visando aumentar a disponibilidade de água para o cultivo da melancieira pode ser uma alternativa para diminuir os riscos de déficit hídrico. Diante do exposto, objetivou avaliar o efeito do hidrogel no crescimento inicial de melancieira cultivar 'Crimson Sweet', em diferentes condições de sombreamento. O trabalho foi realizado em casa de vegetação, organizado experimentalmente no delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 4x3, sendo o primeiro fator quatro doses de hidrogel (0,0; 1,5; 3,0; 6,0 g L-1 de substrato) e o segundo fator três ambientes de sombreamento (sol pleno; malha de cor preta e malha fotoconversora de cor vermelha, ambas com 50 % de sombreamento), e cinco repetições por tratamento. Procedeu-se as análises das seguintes variáveis: altura das plantas, diâmetro do caule, massa seca da parte aérea, massa seca da raiz, massa seca total e área foliar. A melhor concentração dentre aquelas testadas para o cultivo de melancieira foi de 1,5 g L-1 de hidrogel, sendo que doses superiores não favorecem o crescimento das plantas, independentemente das condições de sombreamento. O uso da malha preta favoreceu o acúmulo de massa em plantas de melancia 'Crimson Sweet' enquanto a malha vermelha induziu ao estiolamento das plantas.

ABSTRACT Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) belongs to the plant family Cucurbitaceae. It is cultivated in many regions of Brazil, particularly in rainfed areas; thus, it is subject to the problems arising from irregular rainfall. Hydrogel is a soil conditioner used to retain and provide water to plants for long periods of time. Therefore, incorporating hydrogel into the soil should increase water availability for watermelon cultivation, and may be an alternative method to reduce the risk of water deficit. This study evaluated the effect of different concentrations of hydrogel on the initial growth of watermelon cv. 'Crimson Sweet' under different shading conditions. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse with completely randomized design with a 4×3 factorial scheme. The treatments consisted of four hydrogel doses (0.0; 1.5; 3.0; and 6.0 g L-1 substrate), three shading conditions (under full sun; black shade net, and red shade net, both with 50% shading), and five replicates per treatment. The variables evaluated were plant height; stem diameter; shoot, root, and total dry matter; and leaf area. The best hydrogel dose for watermelon cultivation was 1.5 g L-1, but the higher doses impaired plant growth, regardless of shading conditions. The black net improved biomass accumulation in 'Crimson Sweet' watermelon, whereas the red net induced plant etiolation.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se determinar dentre nove equações do ITU a que melhor representa os efeitos do estresse por calor para bezerros leiteiros mestiços criados em ambiente tropical. Foram avaliados 12 bezerros, machos e fêmeas, com idade de 20 a 60 dias, criados no bezerreiro tropical. As frequências respiratória (FR) e cardíaca (FC), as temperaturas retal (TR), corporal superficial (TCS), de bulbo seco (Tbs) e de bulbo úmido (Tbu) foram quantificadas pela manhã e tarde. Calcularam-se nove equações do ITU. Utilizou-se como critério de determinação da melhor equação do ITU, a maior correlação entre as variáveis fisiológicas com os ITUs. As médias das nove equações de ITU, Tbs, Tbu, Pv, Tpo, FR, FC, TR e TCS foram superiores pela tarde em comparação ao turno da manhã, enquanto que a UR teve comportamento inverso. Os maiores valores de temperatura retal foram observados em temperaturas acima de 26,4 °C e umidade inferior a 55,5%. As correlações entre Tbs e Pv com a FR (0,697 e 0,707), TR (0,703 e 0,706) e TCS (0,818 e 0,817) foram significativas e positivas, enquanto que as correlações da UR, com essas mesmas variáveis fisiológicas, foram significativas e negativas (-0,622, -0,590 e -0,638, respectivamente). O melhor índice foi o ITU calor sensível ( I T U = 3,43 + 1,058 x T d b - 0,293 x R H + 0,0164 x T d b x R H + 35,7), que se correlacionou significativamente com a frequência respiratória (r=0,668 e r²=0,446), frequência cardíaca (r=0,259 e r²=0,067), temperatura retal (r=0,693 e r²=0,479) e temperatura corporal superficial (r=0,807 e r²=0,650). Conclui-se que a equação do ITU calor sensível é a que melhor representa os efeitos do estresse por calor dos bezerros leiteiros mestiços em ambiente tropical.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to determine among nine temperature-humidity index (THI) equations, the one that best represents the effects of heat stress on crossbred dairy calves reared in a tropical environment. Twelve male and female calves, aged 20 to 60 days, and raised in a tropical pen were evaluated. Respiratory (RR) and heart rates (HR), rectal (RT), body surface (BST), dry bulb (Tdb) and wet bulb (Tbw) temperatures, partial vapor pressure (Pv), relative humidity (RH) and dew point temperature (Tpo) were quantified in the morning and afternoon. Nine THI equations were calculated. The highest correlation between physiological variables and this was used to select the best THI equation. Averages for nine THI equations, Tdb, Twb, Pv, Tdp, RR, HR, RT, and BST were higher in the afternoon than in the morning, whereas that for RH was the opposite. The highest values for RT occurred at temperatures above 26.4°C and when humidity was below 55.5%. The Tdb and Pv correlations with RR (0.697 and 0.707), RT (0.703 and 0.706) and BST (0.818 and 0.817) were significant and positive, whereas the RH correlations with the same physiological variables were significant and negative (-0.622, -0.590 and -0.638, respectively). The best index was the THI sensible heat-based ( T H I = 3.43 + 1.058 x T d b - 0.293 x R H + 0.0164 x T d b x R H + 35.7), which was significantly correlated with RR (r=0.668 and r²=0.446), HR (r=0.259 and r²=0.067), RT (r=0.693 and r²=0.479) and BST (r=0.807 and r²=0.650). In conclusion, the THI sensible heat-based equation best represents the effects of heat stress on crossbred dairy calves reared in a tropical environment.
