ABSTRACT Private banking is one of the most profitable services offered by financial institutions in Brazil. In this service, a client should consider the suitability of a range of banking product, during his or her life based on dynamic objectives. It is a very complex service that involves regulation from governmental agencies, financial institutions’ interests, and clients’ objectives. It is not uncommon for these aspects to be conflicting, hindering the decision-making process and leading to unwanted decisions. This paper describes the development of a decision support system (DSS) for private banking, called OptPrivate, that integrates the suitability assessment with the portfolio selection, enabling the investor to choose a portfolio based on several and conflicting objectives. The DSS considers the investment selection problem in two interconnected subproblems: suitability and capital allocation. In the former, the DSS is based on an integrated modeling approach that considers legal aspects and investors’ preferences throughout a fuzzy multiple-attribute decision-making approach (MADM), called FTOPSIS-Class. In the latter, a fuzzy multi-objective optimization model uses the sorting results from the previous step to define a portfolio, simultaneously considering risk, return, and the investor’s profile. To facilitate the DSS application, linguistic variables are used in several aspects of the decision-making process, including risk exposure. The DSS was validated using field tests at a well-respected private bank in Brazil. The DSS recommends more suitable portfolios, in line with the investor’s profile, with greater profitability and less volatility than those recommended by the financial analysts for all test cases. RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo da presente pesquisa é estabelecer uma ligação entre os modelos de risco e os paradigmas dos estudos organizacionais. Metodologia: Para atingir esse objetivo, apresentou-se uma discussão sobre risco nas organizações, baseada em estudos organizacionais. Além disso, há uma ilustração para avaliar como os paradigmas organizacionais influenciam os modelos de risco. Resultados: Existem três perspectivas organizacionais principais: modernista, pós-modernista e neomodernista. Com base na análise empírica, observou-se que o uso de hipóteses irrealistas (perspectiva modernista), na gestão de riscos, aumenta o risco do modelo e, portanto, não é adequado para a estimação de modelos de risco. A absoluta falta de avaliação do paradigma pós-modernista, no entanto, pode ser radical demais, no sentido de que, no campo prático, há uma necessidade crucial de informações quantitativas para permitir que instituições financeiras e investidores protejam seus investimentos. Assim, descobriu-se que a solução é o paradigma neomodernista, que emprega hipóteses mais realistas sobre o comportamento dos dados. Contribuições: A principal contribuição desta pesquisa é aumentar a influência de outros atributos na estimação do risco financeiro que vão além dos fundamentos matemáticos e estatísticos. Estudos anteriores não relacionam a literatura tradicional sobre estimativa de gestão de risco financeiro com a literatura voltada para questões sociológicas de estudos organizacionais. Assim, este estudo pode ajudar a construir uma ponte para a integração futura entre esses dois assuntos de pesquisa relacionados.

Abstract Purpose: The objective of this research is to establish a link between risk models and the paradigms of organizational studies. Design/methodology/approach: To achieve this goal, a discussion about risk in organizations was presented, based on organizational studies. Additionally, an illustration was provided to evaluate how organizational paradigms influence risk models. Findings: There are three main organizational perspectives: Modernist, Postmodernist, and Neo-modernist. Based on the empirical analysis, it was observed that the use of unrealistic assumptions (Modernist perspective) in risk management increases model risk, and is thus not suitable for risk model estimation. However, the absolute lack of measurement of the Postmodernist paradigm can be too radical in the sense that, in the practical field, there is a crucial need for quantitative information to enable financial institutions and investors to protect their investments. Thus, it was found that the solution is the Neo-modernist paradigm, which employs more realistic assumptions about data behavior. Originality/value: The main contribution of this research is to raise the influence of other attributes of financial risk estimation that go beyond mathematical and statistical grounds. Previous studies do not relate the traditional literature on financial risk management estimation with literature focused on the sociological issues of organizational studies. Hence, this study can help build a bridge for future integration between these two related research subjects.

RESUMO Esse estudo investiga o modelo cópula que melhor modela a estrutura de dependência de Credit Derivative Swaps (CDS) spreads. Para a análise foram considerados dados diários do período de 01 de Janeiro de 2009 a 21 de Dezembro de 2014. Os modelos considerados foram as Cópulas Vine e as Cópulas Arquimedianas, com diferentes famílias de cópulas. Nossos resultados indicam que as cópulas C-Vine, bem como a família t Student, demonstrou melhor performance, de acordo com os critérios utilizados, para obter a estrutura de dependência. O melhor ajuste da estrutura de dependência pode evitar o risco do modelo, decorrente do uso de um modelo inapropriado.

ABSTRACT This study investigates the copula model that best fit to model the dependence structure of Credit Derivative Swaps (CDS) spreads. For the analysis, we consider daily data from the period of January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2014. Regarding the models, we considered Vine copulas and Hierarchical Archimedean copulas, and different families of copulas. Our results indicate that C-Vine copulas, as well Student t family, demonstrated better performance, according to the criteria used to get the dependence structure. The best fit of the dependence structure can avoid the model risk, from the use of an incorrect model.

RESUMEN Este estudio investiga el modelo copula que mejor modela la estructura de dependencia de Credit Derivative Swaps (CDS) spreads . Para el análisis se consideraron datos diarios del período comprendido entre el 1 de enero de 2009 y el 21 de diciembre de 2014. Los modelos considerados fueron las Copulas Vine y las Copulas Arquimedianas, con diferentes familias de copulas. Nuestros resultados indican que las copulas C-Vine, así como la familia t Student, demostró mejor desempeño, de acuerdo con los criterios utilizados, para obtener la estructura de dependencia. El mejor ajuste de la estructura de dependencia puede evitar el riesgo del modelo, debido al uso de un modelo inapropiado.

ABSTRACT In this paper, we provide an empirical discussion of the differences among some scenario tree-generation approaches for stochastic programming. We consider the classical Monte Carlo sampling and Moment matching methods. Moreover, we test the Resampled average approximation, which is an adaptation of Monte Carlo sampling and Monte Carlo with naive allocation strategy as the benchmark. We test the empirical effects of each approach on the stability of the problem objective function and initial portfolio allocation, using a multistage stochastic chance-constrained asset-liability management (ALM) model as the application. The Moment matching and Resampled average approximation are more stable than the other two strategies.

Abstract This article estimates association coefficients between measures of market sentiment and risk in the U.S., German and Chinese markets. In terms of risk, four measures were considered: standard deviation, value at risk, expected shortfall and shortfall deviation risk. For market sentiment, data was collected using the Psych Signal technology, which is based on the behavior of investors on social networks. The results indicate significant statistical associations, with the direction of association having financial meaning. Moreover, the empirical findings are valid for all risk measurements. The results are in keeping with the Prospect Theory, since in moments when the sentiment indicates low liquidity (a negative value for the difference between Bullish and Bearish Intensities) investors try to reduce the negotiation volume, which has a positive impact on risk. On the other hand, under the inverted scenario, when sentiment indicates high liquidity, there is an increase in the negotiation volume and a consequent decrease in risk. This article is important because its observations of market sentiment as measured by social media data show a consistent relationship with measures of financial risk.

RESUMO Mesmo com estudos que comparam diferentes modelos de risco para o ouro, não há consenso sobre qual é a melhor abordagem ou modelo quando se considera a presença de valores negativos extremos. Para isso, emprega-se um backtesting em modelos condicionais com distribuições distintas, a fim de estimar as medidas de risco VaR e ES, e, assim, encontrar um padrão para o risco dos investimentos no ouro. Verificamos que a abordagem EVT tem estimativas de risco mais conservadora e volátil, com resultados satisfatórios em situações extremas.

ABSTRACT Even with studies to confront different risk models for gold, there is no consensus about what is the best approach or models when considering the presence of extreme negative values. To that, we employ a backtesting in conditional models with distinct distributions in order to estimate VaR and ES risk measures and, thus, find a pattern for the risk of investments in gold. We verify that the EVT approach has more conservative and volatile risk estimates, with satisfactory results in extreme situations.

RESUMEN Incluso con los estudos que comparan diferentes modelos de riesgo para el oro, no hay consenso en lo que es el mejor enfoque o modelo cuándo se considera la presencia de valores negativos extremos. Para esto, se emplea un backtesting en modelos condicionales con distribuciones distintas, a fin de estimar las medidas de riesgo VaR y ES, y, así, encontrar un padrão para el riesgo de las inversiones en el ouro. Encontramos que el enfoque EVT hay estimaciones de riesgo más conservadora y volátil, con resultados satisfactorios en situaciones extremas.

Com a crescente globalização, os mercados financeiros do mundo todo passaram a apresentar maior integração. Tal relacionamento entre mercados possui como implicação um termo que vem atraindo a atenção de profissionais e acadêmicos, a transmissão de volatilidade. Dessa forma, o presente trabalho tem como escopo analisar a transmissão internacional de volatilidade no mercado brasileiro. Para tanto, é utilizado um modelo Garch multivariado com parametrização BEKK. Com base nesse modelo, são estimados os relacionamentos bivariados entre o mercado brasileiro, representado pelo índice Ibovespa, e os mercados americano, argentino, mexicano e chinês, utilizando-se de índices representativos de 4 de janeiro de 2000 até 31 de março de 2010, totalizando 2667 cotações. A amostra foi dividida em três partes, representando os períodos anteriores, durante e posteriores à crise do subprime de 2007/2008. Os resultados obtidos permitem concluir que, durante a crise de 2008, de forma geral, houve mudança na direção da transmissão de volatilidade entre o mercado brasileiro e os demais estudados, de forma ao Brasil passar a exercer maior influência na volatilidade condicional desses, por ter sofrido menores consequências com a crise financeira. Além disso, após o período de turbulência causado pela crise de 2008, o relacionamento da volatilidade entre o mercado brasileiro com os demais passou a ser menos assimétrico do que no período anterior a crise.

With the increasing globalization of world, financial markets around the world began to show further integration. This relationship between markets has implications as a term that has attracted the attention of professionals and academics, the transmission of volatility. Thus, this work has as scope to analyze the transmission of volatility in the Brazilian market. For that, we used a multivariate Garch model with BEKK parameterization. Based on this model, we estimated the bilavariate relationships between the Brazilian market, represented by the Bovespa index, and the U.S. markets, Argentine, Mexican and Chinese, also with outcome approached by representative indexes of January, 4 of 2000 to march, 30 of 2010, totaling 2667 observations. The sample was divided into three parts, representing the periods of before, during and after the sub-prime crisis of 2007/2008. The results allow concluding that during the 2008 crisis, in general, there was a change in the direction of the volatility transmission between Brazilian market and the others studied, with Brazil passing to exercise greater influence, because it suffered less consequence due to the financial crisis. Moreover, after the period of turmoil caused by the crisis of 2008, the relationship between the volatility of the Brazilian market with the rest became less asymmetric than in the period before the crisis.

O consumo exacerbado pode levar muitos indivíduos a contraírem dívidas comprometendo uma parcela significativa de suas rendas e, em muitos casos, acabando por ser tornarem inadimplentes. A inadimplência trás consigo efeitos muitas vezes arrasadores tanto do ponto de vista macroeconômico, aumentando o risco das operações e produtos financeiros, como do ponto de vista do indivíduo, ao afetar suas relações sociais, seu estado psicológico e sua vida familiar. Por outro lado, a maior participação da mulher no mercado de trabalho trouxe uma maior independência financeira e consequentente maior poder na decisão de consumo e ao mesmo tempo, maiores responsabilidades sobre o gerenciamento financeiro e nas decisões de endividamento. Neste sentido, este estudo centrou-se na identificação e análise dos fatores que afetam na propensão ao endividamento, nas mulheres da Mesorregião Centro Ocidental Rio-grandense. Assim, este trabalho propõe um modelo estrutural para explorar as relações entre os fatores determinantes da propensão ao endividamento junto às mulheres da referida Mesorregião, considerando variáveis que compõem os construtos de STATUS SOCIAL, PREOCUPAÇÃO, ESTABILIDADE, PRAZER, PODER, ORÇAMENTO, ILUSÃO e MATERIALISMO. Para isso, foram aplicados 2.500 questionários espalhados estatisticamente entre os 31 municípios que compõem esta Mesorregião. Os dados foram analisados através da metodologia Partial Least Squares - Path Modeling (PLS-PM). Sumariamente, os resultados sugerem que o construto ENDIVIDAMENTO está associado aos construtos STATUS, PREOCUPAÇÃO e MATERIALISMO, corroborando com as teorias das Finanças Comportamentais, ao sugerir que as decisões que envolvem endividamento vão além da simples relação consumo e renda, ou seja, existem outras variáveis comportamentais que são importantes na hora do indivíduo contrair dívidas, tais como, o significado que o indivíduo atribui ao dinheiro e o nível de materialismo.

The exacerbate consumption may lead many individuals to contract debts which commite a significant portion of their income and, in many cases, eventually taking into default. The default often brings with it devastating effects in both macroeconomic point of view, increasing the risk of operations and financial products, such as from the individual standpoint, affecting his social, psychological state and family life. Moreover, the bigger women participation in labor market brought greater financial independence and empowerment in decision and consequently larger power of consumption decision and at the same time, more responsibility on financial management and borrowing decisions. Thus, this study focused on the identification and analysis of factors which affect the indebtedness propensity, among women in the Rio Grande do Sul western-central mesoregion. This study proposes a structural model to determine the relationships among the women indebtedness propensity determinants of that mesoregion, considering variables which compose the constructs of SOCIAL STATUS, CONCERN, STABILITY, PLEASURE, POWER, BUDGET, ILLUSION and MATERIALISM. For this, were applied 2,500 questionnaires statistically scattered among the 31 cities which compose the mesoregion. Data were analyzed by Partial Least Squares -Path Modeling (PLS-PM) methodology. In summary, the results suggest that the construct INDEBTEDNESS is associated with SOCIAL STATUS, CONCERN and MATERIALISM, corroborating with the Behavioral Finance theories, suggesting that decisions involving borrowing go beyond the simple consumption and income relationship, i.e., there are other behavioral variables which are important in the time that individual contract debts, such as the meaning that the individual attaches to money and the materialism level.

O presente trabalho possui como objetivo testar a hipótese de caminho aleatório no mercado da Soja, Algodão, Café e Milho, através da utilização de testes de quociente de variância. São utilizados dados referentes às cotações diárias dos indicadores de preço da ESALQ/CEPEA, correspondentes ao período de 13/03/2006 a 20/10/2010. Os resultados obtidos permitem concluir que todas as commodities rejeitam a hipótese de caminho aleatório, e por consequência a eficiência de mercado, gerando oportunidade de arbitragem.

This research aims to test the random walk hypothesis in Soybean, Cotton, Coffee and Corn markets by using the variance ratio tests. The data used refers to the daily quotations of price indicators, ESALQ/CEPEA for the period from 13/03/2006 to 20/10/2010.Results allowed to conclude that all commodities reject the random walk hypothesis, and hence the efficiency of market, generating arbitrage opportunity.
