Personal hygiene products, such as UV filters, are consumed daily and released at sewage treatment plants. The presence of these compounds in aquatic environments may cause concern, as their impacts are not yet fully known. Biofilms can be an innovative and simple tool for monitoring the bioaccumulation of contaminants such as UV filters in aquatic environments. The present work aimed to determine and evaluate the potential of bioaccumulation of these compounds in biofilm and in the surface waters of the Barigui River. The determination of contaminants in environmental matrices was performed by liquid chromatography coupled to triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The validation of the methodology used was based on the acceptance criteria of the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro). The results obtained in the samples ranged from the maximums of 5.85 μg L-1 of benzophenone-1 for water samples to 1907.40 μg kg-1 of benzophenone-3 for biofilm. RESUMO Conhecer as alterações ecológicas em um reservatório é de grande relevância para estudos de impacto ambiental e avaliação de qualidade da água. Dentro desses estudos, o conhecimento da estrutura da comunidade fitoplanctônica é necessário, pois esta comunidade tem uma importância fundamental nos ecossistemas aquáticos, respondendo de forma rápida às mudanças físicas e químicas da água. O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a comunidade fitoplanctônica e a influência das variáveis abióticas, considerando o eixo longitudinal em quatro reservatórios de hidrelétricas em cascata do rio Iguazu, Paraná, Brasil, destacando a importância das cianobactérias. Foram amostrados quatro dos reservatórios de hidrelétricas do rio Iguazu: Foz do Areia, Salto Segredo, Salto Santiago e Salto Caxias. A contagem dos indivíduos foi realizada utilizando câmara de sedimentação tubular em microscópio invertido. Os resultados mostraram que os quatros reservatórios estão sujeitos a processos de eutrofização, apresentando intensas florações de cianobactérias, com dominância principalmente de Microcystis aeruginosa e Sphaerocavum brasiliense. Não houve gradiente longitudinal evidente relacionado ao fitoplâncton, como é esperado para reservatórios em sistema de cascata. A dominância de cianobactérias indica que o rio Iguazu está passando por um intenso processo de degradação ambiental, ameaçando a integridade das comunidades biológicas e causando sérios danos ao ecossistema como um todo.

ABSTRACT Knowing the ecological changes in a reservoir is of great relevance to study environmental impacts and assess water quality. Among these studies, the knowledge about the structure of the phytoplankton community is essential, once they represent a fundamental component of aquatic ecosystems, responding immediately to physical and chemical alterations in water. The objective of this work was to analyze the phytoplankton community and the influence of abiotic factors, along the longitudinal axis in four cascade reservoirs system of the Iguazu River, Paraná, Brazil, emphasizing the importance of cyanobacteria. Foz do Areia, Salto Segredo, Salto Santiago and Salto Caxias reservoirs were the objects of this study. The phytoplankton counting was made tubular sedimentation chamber using an inverted microscope. The results showed that the four reservoirs are under eutrophication processes, presenting intense cyanobacteria blooms, dominated mainly by Microcystis aeruginosa and Sphaerocavum brasiliense. There was no evident longitudinal gradient related to phytoplankton, as expected for reservoirs in a cascade system. The dominance of cyanobacteria shows that the Iguazu River is undergoing an intense process of environmental degradation, threatening the integrity of biological communities and causing serious damage to the ecosystem as a whole.

RESUMO Hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos (HPAs) são poluentes orgânicos considerados persistentes e que podem causar sérios danos em alguns organismos, incluindo propriedades mutagênicas e carcinogênicas. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar as concentrações de HPAs em uma bacia urbanizada e utilizar relações diagnósticas para tentar distinguir fontes de contaminação. A análise de água superficial mostrou um predomínio de compostos de 3 a 4 anéis aromáticos, enquanto que para material particulado suspenso e sedimentos houve uma predominância de compostos com 4, 5 e 6 anéis aromáticos. Apesar de baixas concentrações no sedimento, avaliação de equivalentes de toxicidade mostraram valores superiores a 3 ng g-1 de sedimento para 50% das amostras, com valores de até 125.35 ng g–1. O uso de relações diagnósticas permitiu atribuir, nestes ambientes aquáticos, que os HPAs foram provenientes, principalmente, de origem pirogênicas. Mesmo assim, o uso de tais relações deve ser feito com o devido cuidado, tentando avaliar possíveis interferências de fatores de degradação.

ABSTRACT Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are considered persistent organic pollutants and can cause serious damage in some organisms, including mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the PAH concentrations in an urban basin and use diagnostic ratios to possible distinguish sources of contamination. The surface water analysis showed predominance of compounds containing 3 to 4 aromatic rings while in suspended particulate matter and sediment there was a predominance of compounds containing 4, 5 and 6 rings. Although present in low concentrations in the sediment, assessment of toxicity equivalent factor (TEF) showed values higher than 3 ng g–1 pellet to 50% of the samples with values of up to 125.35 ng g-1. The use of diagnostic ratios allowed verifying that the main source of PAHs in these aquatic environments, are pyrogenic sources. Still, the use of such relations should be done with caution, trying to assess possible interference of degradation factors

Resumo A determinação do teor natural de elementos-traço é essencial para monitorar a entrada de tais elementos no sistema solo e contribuir na remediação de áreas contaminadas. O objetivo desse trabalho foi determinar o teor natural de Arsênio em solos provenientes de três regiões do estado de Santa Catarina: Planalto Sul, Metropolitana e Litoral Sul. O teor de Arsênio foi obtido após digestão em forno de micro-ondas, seguindo o protocolo da USEPA 3051 A e quantificação em espectrometria de absorção atômica com atomização eletrotérmica. Os resultados foram analisados pelo teste Scott-Knott a 5% de significância. Os atributos do solo que melhor se correlacionaram com os teores de Arsênio foram argila, carbono orgânico, capacidade de troca de cátions e óxidos de alumínio e de ferro. Os teores de Arsênio estão relacionados ao material de origem e ao relevo dos solos das regiões.

Abstract The determination of trace elements is necessary in order to monitor their entry into the soil system and to remediate contaminated areas. The purpose of this study was to determine the natural content of arsenic (As) in soils of three regions of Santa Catarina State (SC): the Southern Plateau, the Metropolitan area and the Southern Coast. Arsenic content was obtained after digestion in a microwave oven, following the USEPA 3051 A protocol and quantification was made by atomic absorption spectrometry with electrothermal atomization. The results were analyzed by the Scott-Knott test at a 5% significance level. Soil attributes that best correlated with arsenic content were clay, organic carbon, cation exchange capacity and Al and Fe oxides. The arsenic levels are related to the source material and the slope of regional soils.
