OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a relação da força de preensão manual com a função física em indivíduos idosos institucionalizados. MÉTODOS: Cento e cinquenta e sete idosos institucionalizados de ambos os sexos em sete diferentes instituições de longa permanência foram submetidos a avaliação da composição corporal, função cognitiva, forca de preensão manual (PREENSAO), mobilidade funcional, equilíbrio corporal (escala de equilíbrio de BERG e teste unipodal) e velocidade de caminhada (VELCAM). RESULTADOS: Em geral, os participantes deste estudo não apresentaram comprometimento da função cognitiva, mobilidade funcional, equilíbrio corporal ou da VELCAM. Os homens desenvolveram maior PREENSÃO e alcançaram maior escore em BERG. Os voluntários mais aptos (i.e., P75 a P100) apresentaram melhor função física, BERG e VeLcAM; os menos aptos (i.e., P0 a P25) apresentaram maior estatura e melhor VELCAM. A PREENSAO foi independentemente associada à função física e ao equilíbrio unipodal somente no sexo feminino (amostra total). A função cognitiva (feminino, P25 a P75; masculino, amostra total) e a idade (masculino, amostra total) demonstraram tendência de interferência em relação à avaliação da função física. A idade e o peso corporal parecem ser candidatos a preditores da VELCAM, sobretudo no P25 a P75 do sexo feminino, enquanto a função cognitiva é preditor de VELCAM no sexo masculino (P75 a P100). Por outro lado, a idade e o peso corporal são significativamente associados a VELCAM (feminino, amostra total). CONCLUSÃO: Os dados deste estudo piloto permitem concluir que a forca de preensão manual foi independentemente associada a função física de mulheres idosas institucionalizadas.

PURPOSE: To analyze the relationship of grip strength and physical function in institutionalized older people. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-seven nursing home residents of seven different long-stay institutions underwent evaluation of body composition, cognitive function, grip strength, mobility, balance (balance scale test BERG and single-leg stance test) and gait speed. RESULTS: Volunteers had no impairment of cognitive function, functional mobility, balance or gait speed. Men had higher grip strength and achieved higher scores in BERG. Fittest volunteers (i.e., P75 to P100) had better functional mobility, BERG and gait speed; less fit volunteers (i.e., P0 to P25) were taller and had better gait speed. The grip strength was independently associated with functional mobility and balance in the single-leg stance test only in females. The cognitive function (female, P25 to P75, male, total sample) and age (male, total sample) showed a tendency to be mediators of functional mobility. Age and body weight seem to confound the gait speed, especially for females (P25 to P75), while cognitive function confound it in males (P75 to P100). However, age and body weight are significantly associated with gait speed (female, total sample). CONCLUSION: We can conclude that grip strength was independently associated with functional mobility and balance of institutionalized older women.

OBJETIVO: Analisar as associações entre depressão e aptidão e função físicas em homens vivendo com HIV/AIDS, e o papel da satisfação sexual nessas associações. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal conduzido com 40 homens vivendo com HIV/AIDS (40,75 ± 8,68 anos [25-66 anos de idade]) divididos em dois grupos de acordo com o nadir de CD4+ (nadir baixo < 200 células/mm3; nadir alto ≥ 200 células/mm3). A depressão foi estimada pelo inventário de depressão de Beck. Os participantes auto-classificaram sua satisfação sexual. A aptidão física foi avaliada por meio da flexibilidade, força muscular e consumo de oxigênio de pico (VO2pico). A função física foi mensurada pelo tempo para levantar-se de uma posição sentada (TLPS), tempo para amarrar o tênis, e tempo para caminhar 3,33 m. RESULTADOS: A depressão foi inversamente associada com satisfação sexual (para nadir baixo e alto) e flexibilidade (para nadir baixo), e positivamente associada com tempo de caminhada (para nadir baixo e amostra total), e tempo para calçar e amarrar o tênis (amostra total). A satisfação sexual foi positivamente associada com força muscular (para nadir alto e amostra total), mas inversamente com TLPS (para nadir baixo e amostra total), tempo de caminhada (para nadir baixo e amostra total), e tempo para calçar e amarrar o tênis (para nadir alto e amostra total). CONCLUSÃO: Os dados sugerem que existe associação negativa entre depressão e função física independente do quadro clinico retrospectivo de homens vivendo com HIV/AIDS, e que parece existir, potencialmente, um papel para a satisfação sexual como explicação para essa associação.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the associations between depression and physical fitness and function in men living with HIV/AIDS and the role of sexual satisfaction in these associations. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study conducted with 40 males living with HIV/AIDS (40.75 ± 8.68 years [25-66 yrs. old]) divided in two groups based on CD4+ nadir (low nadir < 200 cells/mm3; high nadir ≥ 200 cells/mm3). METHODS: Depression was determined by the Beck Depression Inventory. Participants were asked to evaluate their satisfaction with sexual life and their physical fitness was assessed by flexibility, muscle strength and peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak). Physical function was measured by time taken to move from seated to standing position (TSSP), time to tie sneakers, and time to walk 3.33 m. RESULTS: Depression was inversely associated with sexual satisfaction (for low and high CD4+ nadir) and flexibility (for low CD4+ nadir), and positively associated with walking time (for low CD4+ nadir and total sample), and time to tie sneakers (for the total sample). Sexual satisfaction was positively associated with muscle strength (for low CD4+ nadir and total sample), but inversely with TSSP (for low CD4+ nadir and total sample), walking time (for low CD4+ nadir and total sample), and time to tie sneakers (for high CD4+ nadir and total sample). CONCLUSION: Findings suggest a negative association between depression and physical function regardless of retrospective clinical status of men living with HIV/AIDS and a potential role for sexual satisfaction in explaining this association.

OBJETIVO: O teste de caminhada de seis minutos (TC6M) é uma estrategia simples e de baixo custo operacional que objetivamente mede a aptidão cardiorrespiratória de indivíduos com diferentes condições de saúde. Nosso objetivo foi desenvolver equações de predição da potência aeróbica em homens idosos saudáveis usando o TC6M. MÉTODOS: Foram medidos a composição corporal (massa corporal [MC], índice de massa corporal [BMI], porcentagem de gordura [%G]) e potência aeróbica de pico através de teste cardiopulmonar de exercício máximo (velocidade, frequência cardíaca [FC] e consumo de oxigênio [VO2] no limiar anaeróbico e no pico]) e através do TC6M (distancia [D], produto massa corporal x distância, FC e VO2de pico) em 76 idosos saudáveis com idade entre 65 e 80 anos (69.1 ± 0.3 anos). RESULTADOS: Foram observadas correlações significativas para VO2pico no TC6M em função do produto MCxD (R = 0,75, P < 0,0005), MC (R = 0,56, P < 0,0005), D (R = 0,43, P = 0,0004) e FC máxima (R = 0,37, P = 0,001). A correlacionou-se significativamente com %G (R = -0,43, P = 0,005), IMC (R = -0,36, P = 0,021) e idade (R = -0,31, P < 0,045), enquanto que a MCxD correlacionou-se com MC (R = 0,86, P < 0,005). A inclusão da MCxD aumentou o R 2 de 0,65 para 0,74 e diminuiu o erro padrão da estimativa (EPE) gerando a equação (R = 0,86, EPE = 182,1 mL·min-1, P < 0,0005) para a predição do VO2peak: VO2peak = 962,2 + (0,037 x MCxD) + (8,565 x FC máxima). Foi também gerado um modelo preditivo não dependente de exercício através de regressão univariada, mas não múltipla. A %G (R=0,43, EPE = 702,2 m, P < 0,005) gerou o melhor modelo para a predição da distancia, i.e., distancia = 702,2 - (3,067 x %G). CONCLUSÃO: Nossas modelos de predição parecem estimar precisamente o VO2pico de idosos saudáveis, especialmente quando a MCxD é considerada.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: A simple, low-cost approach commonly used to objectively analyze the cardiorespiratory fitness of individuals with different health conditions is the six-minute walk test (6-MWT). Our objective was to develop peak aerobic power prediction using the six-minute walk test in healthy older men. METHODS: We measured body composition (body mass [BM], body mass index [BMI], fat percentage [FAT]) and peak aerobic power breath-by-breath during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET [velocity, heart rate [HR] and VO2 at the anaerobic threshold and peak]) and a 6-MWT (distance [D], weight by distance [WxD], HR and oxygen consumption [VO2] at peak) in 76 healthy older men aged 65 to 80 years (69.1 ± 0.3 yrs-old). RESULTS: We observed significant correlations for VO2peak during the 6-MWT as a function of WxD (R = 0.75, P < 0.0005), BM (R = 0.56, P < 0.0005), D (R = 0.43, P = 0.0004) and maximum HR (R = 0.37, P = 0.001). Distance correlated significantly with FAT (R = -0.43, P = 0.005), BMI (R = -0.36, P = 0.021) and age (R = -0.31, P < 0.045), whereas WxD correlated with BM (R = 0.86, P<0.005).The inclusion of WxD increased the R2 from 0.65 to 0.74 and decreased the estimative error while yielding the following equation (R = 0.86, standard error of the estimate (SEE) = 182.1 mL•min-1, P < 0.0005) to predict VO2peak: VO2peak = 962.2 + (0.037 x WxD) + (8.565 x maximum HR). A non-exercise model was obtained by univariate regressions but not multiple regressions. The FAT (R = 0.43, SEE = 702.2 m, P < 0.005) yielded the best model for predicting distance, i.e., distance = 702.2 - (3.067 x FAT). CONCLUSION: Our prediction model seems to accurately estimate VO2peak in healthy older men primarily when WxD is considered.

OBJETIVO: Comparar e analisar as relações entre imagem corporal, composição coporal e função física em mulheres idosas fisicamente ativas com sobrepeso e peso normal. MÉTODOS: Medimos a massa corporal, índice de massa corporal (IMC), circunferência da cintura, força de preensão manual, força de membros inferiores, flexão de cotovelo, equilíbrio, marcha estacionária, velocidade normal e máxima de caminhada, levantar-se da cadeira em 700 mulheres idosas fisicamente ativas com sobrepeso (N: 398 [67.2 ± 8.5 years; IMC > 27 kg·m2]) e peso normal (N: 302 [67.3 ± 8.5 years; IMC < 27 kg·m2]). A imagem corporal atual (ICA) e ideal (ICI), assim como a insatisfação com a imagem corporal (IIC) foram determinadas pelas respostas das voluntarias de acordo com silhuetas padronizadas. RESULTADOS: A analise de regressão múltipla verificou associações positivas (ICA) e negativas (IIC) para equilíbrio na categoria obesidade. Foi observada associação positiva com a velocidade usual e máxima de caminhada para ICA (categorias peso normal e obesidade) e IIC (sobrepeso). Existiram associações positivas para o desempenho no teste de marcha estacionária, flexão de cotovelo e numero de repetições para levantar-se da cadeira. CONCLUSÃO: Mulheres idosas fisicamente ativas demonstram elevada prevalência de insatisfação com a imagem corporal independente do índice de massa corporal. Esse resultado é mediado pela idade, e está associado com pior função física; associações semelhantes foram observadas para a imagem corporal atual.

OBJECTIVE: To compare and examine relationships between body image (BI), body composition and physical function in overweight and normal weight active older women. METHOD: We measured body mass (BM), body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WAIST), grip strength (GS), lower limb muscle strength [LLMS], arm curl, balance, step-in-place test (SIPT), usual walk (WALK), fast walking (fastWALK), single chair stand (CHAIRtime) and repeated chair stand (CHAIRreps) in 398 overweight or obese women (67.2 ± 8.5 years; BMI > 27 kg·m2) and 302 women with a BMI < 27 kg·m2 (67.3 ± 8.5 years). Current (CBI) and ideal body image (IBI), and body dissatisfaction (DS; current - ideal) were determined by participant's responses to standardized silhouettes. RESULTS: Multiple regression analyses verified positive (CBI) and negative associations (DS) for balance in obese category. A positive association with WALK and fastWALK was observed for current (normal weight and obesity categories) and IBI (overweight). There were positive associations for SIPT, arm curl and CHAIRreps. CONCLUSION: Physically active older women showed an elevated prevalence of dissatisfaction regardless of BMI which was mediated by age, and associated with worsened physical function; similar associations were seen for current body image.

OBJETIVO: Analisar as relações entre carga, massa corporal e massa magra na tentativa de fornecer normas padrão de referencia para o teste de uma repetição máxima e predizer a forca muscular corporal em idosos. MÉTODOS: A massa corporal, a massa magra e o teste de uma repetição máxima (1RM) foram medidos em 189 idosos com idade entre 61 e 82 anos. A forca muscular corporal (FMC) foi calculada como a somatória das cargas dos diferentes exercícios. RESULTADOS: Para mulheres, a inclusão da massa corporal ou da massa magra aumentou o R2 de 0.41 para 0.82, e resultou na equação: FMC = 75.788 + (2.288 × carga em kg para o puxador) + (0.799 × massa magra em kg). Para homens, a inclusão da massa corporal (FMC = 290.33 - [3.140 × idade em anos] + [1.236 × massa corporal em kg] + [1.549 × carga em kg para o leg press]) ou da massa magra (FMC = 343.25 - [3.298 × idade em anos] + [.415 × massa magra em kg] + [1.737 × carga em kg para o leg press]) diminuiu o erro padrão da estimativa. CONCLUSÃO: Nossos resultados suportam a ideia de que a carga correlaciona-se com a massa corporal e massa magra, e que a carga empregada em determinado exercício está significativamente associada com a forca muscular corporal. Portanto, isso permite o desenvolvimento de um modelo preditivo de forca muscular corporal com substancial acurácia.

PURPOSE: To analyze possible relationships between load, body mass and lean body mass in an effort to provide norm-referenced standards for the one repetition maximum test and to predict whole body muscle strength (WBMS) in older individuals. METHODS: We measured body mass, lean body mass and the one repetition maximum (1RM) test in different exercises in 189 older men and women aged 61 to 82 years. Whole body muscle strength (WBMS) was calculated as the sum of loads of the different exercises. RESULTS: For women, the inclusion of body mass or lean body mass increased the R2 from 0.41 to 0.82, and yielded the following equation: WBMS = 75.788 + (2.288 × load in kg of latissimus pull down) + (0.799 × lean body mass in kg). For men, the inclusion of either body mass (WBMS = 290.33 - [3.140 × age in years] + [1.236 × body mass in kg] + [1.549 × load in kg of leg press]) or, in particular, lean body mass (WBMS = 343.25 - [3.298 × age in years] + [.415 × lean body mass in kg] + [1.737 × load in kg of leg press]) decreased the standard error of the estimate. CONCLUSION: Our data support the idea that load correlates with body mass and lean body mass and that the load used for a specific exercise is significantly associated with WBMS, thereby permitting the development of a predictive model of WBMS with increased accuracy.

O objetivo deste estudo foi examinar a associação entre a força de preensão manual e a aptidão física de crianças e adolescentes de diferentes estágios de maturação sexual. Foram medidos a composição corporal e a força de preensão em 233 crianças e adolescentes (10 - 17 anos de idade), de diferentes estágios de maturação biológica. Também foram realizados os testes de impulsão vertical sem auxílio dos membros superiores, teste de abdominal, flexibilidade, agilidade e velocidade. O gasto de energético foi avaliado através das respostas ao questionário IPAQ. A força de preensão manual diferiu entre os diferentes estágios de maturação sexual. As outras variáveis de aptidão física diferiram entre os sexos. A força de preensão manual esteve associada com todas as outras variáveis da aptidão física, independentemente do sexo e da maturação sexual. Algumas dessas associações foram mediadas pelo gasto energético. A força da associação entre a força de preensão e de aptidão física variou de 20 % (teste de salto vertical: R2=0,20, P = 0,001) a 47% (velocidade em metros por segundo: R2=0,47, P = 0,001). Nossos resultados suportam a hipótese de que a força de preensão manual está associada com vários parâmetros distintos de aptidão física, independentemente da idade, sexo ou maturação sexual, sugerindo que a força de preensão manual pode ser um preditor da aptidão física geral de crianças e adolescentes.

The objective of this study was to examine the association between hangrip strength and physical fitness in children and adolescents at different stages of sexual maturation. We measured body composition and handgrip strength in 233 children and adolescents (10 - 17 years-old), who varied in terms of pubertal status. The subjects also performed the vertical jump test, standing long jump and sit-ups, as well as tests of flexibility, agility and speed. The level of energy expenditure was assessed with the international physical activity questionnaire. Handgrip strength differed by pubertal status, regardless of gender, whereas other parameters of physical fitness differed by gender and in the sample as a whole. Handgrip strength was consistently and independently associated with all other physical fitness variables, regardless of gender; some of those were mediated by energy expenditure (i.e., speed in seconds and in meters per second for the sample as a whole). The strength of the association between handgrip strength and physical fitness ranged from 20% (vertical jump test: R2=.20; P=.001) to 47% (speed in meters per second: R2=.47; P=.001). Our results support the idea that handgrip strength is consistently associated with several distinct parameters of physical fitness, regardless of age, gender or sexual maturation, suggesting that handgrip strength could be a highly accurate, independent predictor of physical fitness

RESUMO OBJETIVO: Analisar os custos de assistência e as taxas de rentabilidade de uma empresa privada de seguro de saúde. MÉTODOS: Uma companhia provada de seguros de saúde de uma cidade do interior de São Paulo foi analisada. Os custos da assistência e as taxas de rentabilidade foram levantados em um intervalo de tempo de sete anos e estratificados de acordo com idade e sexo. O custo de assistência (soma de consultas médicas, exames, a intervencao cirúrgica) foi calculado pelo método de contagem de absorção, que consiste na análise de custos diretos e indiretos, fixos e variáveis causadas pelo uso de recursos médicos e hospitalares. A taxa de rentabilidade foi calculada baseada na diferencaentre areceita (mensalidade e co-participação [20%]) e o custo da assistência. RESULTADOS: Existe aumento desproporcional nos custos embora seja observado decréscimo do número de usuários com o aumento da idade. O incremento da receita unitária na faixa etária de 50 a 59 anos de idade contrasta com os resultados unitários. Existe superávit ate a idade de 59 anos e déficit a partir desta idade. Esse déficit progride de acordo com a faixa etária. Neste caso, enquanto os primeiros grupos etários apresentam lucro unitário equilibrado, existe progressão crescente do custo unitário contribuindo para o aumento dos custos acima da receita, especialmente nos indivíduos com mais de 60 anos de idade. CONCLUSÃO: Nossos resultados consistentemente apoiam a hipótese de inversão das taxas de rentabilidade em função da idade, independentemente da diminuição do numero de indivíduos na faixa etária de 60 anos de idade.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we will analyze assistance costs and profitability rates of a private health insurance company. METHODS: A private health insurance company of an inland city of Sa˜o Paulo was analyzed. Assistance costs and profitability rates were analyzed in a time interval of seven years according to age and gender. The assistance cost (sum of medical appointments, exams, surgical intervention) was calculated by the absorption counting method, which consists of the analysis of direct and indirect, fixed and variable costs caused by the use of medical and hospital resources. The profitability rate was calculated based on the difference between the premium (monthly fee and co-insurance [20%]) and the cost assistance. RESULTS: Although the number of users decreases as age increases, costs increase disproportionally. The growth of unitary premiums from the age group of 50 to 59 years contrasts with the unitary results. There is a surplus until the age of 59 years and subsequent deficit from this age on. This deficit progresses according to the age group. In this case, while the first age groups present a balanced unitary profit, there is a growing progression of the unitary cost that causes costs to increase above the premium, especially in individuals over 60 years of age. CONCLUSION: Our results consistently support the hypothesis of inversion of profitability rates according to age, regardless of the decrease of the number of individuals at the age group of 60 years.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare aerobic function [anaerobic threshold (%VO2-AT), respiratory compensation point (%VO2-RCP) and peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak)] between physically active patients with HIV/AIDS and matched controls and to examine associations between disease status, poor muscle strength, depression (as estimated by the profile of mood states questionnaire) and the aerobic performance of patients. METHODS: Progressive treadmill test data for %VO2-AT (V-slope method), RCP and (VO2peak) were compared between 39 male patients with HIV/AIDS (age 40.6±1.4 years) and 28 male controls (age 44.4±2.1 years) drawn from the same community and matched for habitual physical activity. Within-patient data were also examined in relation to CD4+ counts (nadir and current data) and peak isokinetic knee torque. RESULTS: AT, RCP and (VO2peak) values were generally similar for patients and controls.Within the patient sample, binary classification suggested that AT, RCP and (VO2peak) values were not associated with either the nadir or current CD4+ count, but treadmill test variables were positively associated with peak isokinetic knee torque. CONCLUSION: The aerobic performance of physically active patients with HIV/AIDS is generally well conserved. Nevertheless, poor muscle strength is observed in some HIV/AIDS patients, which is associated with lower anaerobic power and (VO2peak), suggesting the possibility of enhancing the aerobic performance of patients with weak muscles through appropriate muscle-strengthening activities.

Este estudo aleatorizado não controlado teve como objetivo determinar o efeito de um protocolo de exercício com pesos ou aeróbico no desempenho das atividades da vida diária em mulheres idosas. Para tanto, a amostra foi constituída por 41 mulheres idosas aparentemente saudáveis na faixa etária de 60 a 85 anos de idade (x: 65,1 ± 7,9 anos) divididas aleatoriamente em grupo exercício com pesos (n: 22) ou aeróbico (n: 19). O grupo exercício com pesos consistiu na execução de três séries de oito a 12 repetições a 60% de uma repetição máxima no exercício leg press 45º. O grupo exercício aeróbico consistiu em pedalar em cicloergômetro durante 40 minutos a 60% da frequência cardíaca de reserva. Os dois protocolos foram realizados três vezes por semana durante cinco semanas. As atividades da vida diária selecionadas foram velocidade para se levantar de uma posição sentada (VLPS), velocidade para se levantar de uma posição deitada (VLPD), velocidade para subir escada (VSE) e velocidade para calçar e amarrar o tênis (VCAT). O grupo exercício aeróbico melhorou significativamente o desempenho em VCAT (19,1%), enquanto o exercício com pesos incrementou significativamente o desempenho em VSE (4,3%) e VLPS (8,9%). Os resultados deste estudo permitem concluir que tanto o exercício com pesos como o aeróbico induziram efeito positivo nas atividades da vida diária, sugerindo que ambas as modalidades de exercício devem ser associadas a um programa adequado de exercícios para a melhora da capacidade funcional de pessoas idosas.

The purpose of this randomized non-controlled study was to determine the effect of an aerobic or resistance exercise protocol on performance of activities of daily living in elderly women. The sample was constituted of 41 apparently healthy elderly women aged 60 to 85 years (x: 65.1 ± 7.9 years) randomly assigned in resistance exercise (n: 22) or aerobic groups (n: 19). The resistance exercise protocol consisted of three sets of eight to 12 repetitions at 60% of one repetition maximum test for the leg press 45º. The aerobic exercise protocol consisted in cycling in a cycle ergometer during 40 minutes at 60% of reserve heart rate. Both protocols were performed three times per week during five weeks. Activities of daily living were estimated by velocity to stand from sitting to standing position (VSeated), velocity to move from supine to standing position (VSupine), velocity to climb stairs (VCS) and velocity to wear sneakers (VWS). Volunteers of aerobic exercise protocol improved significantly the time to perform VWS (19.1%), while the volunteers of resistance exercise protocol improved the capacity to perform VCS (4.3%) and VSupine (8.9%). These results let us conclude that aerobic as well as resistance exercise protocols induced positive effect on activities of daily living, suggesting that both protocols must be associated for an adequate exercise program to improve the functional capacity of elderly people.

Este estudo teve como objetivo verificar o efeito da idade, peso, altura, índice de massa corporal e adiposidade corporal na capacidade funcional de mulheres acima de 47 anos para realizar as atividades da vida diária. Para tanto, a amostra foi constituída por 129 mulheres na faixa etária de 47 a 77 anos de idade. A adiposidade total (Adp T) foi considerada por meio do somatório das dobras cutâneas bíceps (BI), tríceps (TRI), subescapular (SB), axilar média (AM), supra-ilíaca (SI), abdominal (ABD), coxa anterior (CA) e panturrilha medial (PM). A adiposidade central (Adp C) representou o somatório de SB, AM, SI e ABD, e a adiposidade periférica (Adp P), o somatório de BI, TRI, CA e PM. A capacidade funcional para realizar as atividades da vida diária foi predita mediante os testes: velocidade para se levantar de uma posição sentada (VLPS) e para se levantar de uma posição deitada (VLPD), velocidade para calçar e amarrar o tênis (VCAT) e velocidade para subir escada (VSE). Foi calculado o quartil (Q) para todas as variáveis independentes (idade, peso, altura, índice de massa corporal e adiposidade corporal [total, central e periférica]). A análise estatística utilizada foi a ANOVA one way e os coeficientes de correlação linear de Pearson e Spearman rank-order. As diferenças estatisticamente significativas ocorreram principalmente entre os quartis das extremidades (Q1 x Q4) para VLPS e VLPD (exceção para peso e IMC), enquanto para VSE foi entre Q2 x Q4 (idade). As variáveis independentes exerceram efeito nulo sobre VCAT. A magnitude de variação percentual ocorreu entre a amplitude de 14,1% (idade [VLPD: Q3 x Q4]) e 36,1% (Adp T [VLPS: Q2 x Q4]). Em ordem, as variáveis independentes que exerceram maior repercussão negativa sobre a performance nos testes de capacidade funcional (VLPS, VLPD, VSE) para realizar as atividades da vida diária foram Adp C, idade, Adp T, Adp P, IMC e peso.

The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of chronological age, body weight, body height, body mass index, and body adiposity on the functional capacity to perform daily living activities of women with > 47 years of age. The sample comprised 129 women from 47 to 77 years of age. The total body adiposity (TBA) was represented by the sum total of biceps (BI), triceps (TRI), subscapular (SB), middle axillary (MA), suprailiac (SI), abdominal (ABD), anterior thigh (AT), and middle calf (MC) skinfolds. Central body adiposity (CBA) was taken as the sum total of SB, MA, SI, and ABD, whereas peripheral body adiposity (PBA) was represented by the sum total of BI, TRI, AT and MC. The performance of daily living activities was estimated by: velocity to move from sitting to standing position (VSSP1), velocity to move from supine to standing position (VSSP2), velocity to climb stairs (VCS), and velocity to put on snickers and tie the laces (VWS). The quartile (Q) was calculated for all independent variables (chronological age, body weight, body height, body mass index, and body adiposity [total, central and peripheral]). The statistical analysis used was ANOVA "One Way" with post-hoc Bonferroni, and the coefficient of linear correlation (Pearson and Spearman Rank-Order). Statistical differences occurred specially between quartiles of extremities (Q1 x Q4) for VSSP1 and VSSP2 (except for body weight and BMI), while for VCS it was between Q2 x Q4 (chronological age). The independent variables exerted no effect on VWS. The percent range was from 14.1% (chronological age [VSSP2: Q3 x Q4]) to 36.1% (TBA [VSSP1: Q2 x Q4]). Variables that exerted negative repercussion on functional capacity to perform daily living activities were central body adiposity, chronological age, total body adiposity, peripheral body adiposity, BMI and body weight, in that order.

Este estudo teve como objetivo verificar o efeito da interrupção de um programa de exercícios com pesos livres sobre a força muscular de mulheres idosas através do teste de uma repetição máxima (1-RM). Para tanto, a amostra foi constituída por oito mulheres idosas saudáveis (x: 64,3 ± 7,6 anos) que foram envolvidas, previamente à interrupção, em um programa de exercícios com pesos livres durante 12 semanas, três vezes por semana, três séries de 10 repetições a 50% 1-RM para seis tipos de exercícios para os membros superiores e inferiores. O teste 1-RM foi realizado imediatamente após a interrupção do programa e subseqüentemente a cada quatro semanas (4ª, 8ª e 12ª semanas). Os valores demonstraram decréscimo estatisticamente significativo na força muscular de ambas as extremidades corporais, principalmente após a 8ª semana de pausa. O decréscimo percentual na 12ª semana variou de 27,5% a 35,1% para a força muscular de membros inferiores e superiores, respectivamente; aconteceu, principalmente, nos membros superiores. Os membros inferiores preservaram mais a capacidade de manutenção da força muscular após a interrupção do treinamento (22,9% a 71,9%) que os membros superiores (-14,8% a 16,1%) quando os valores absolutos finais do período de destreinamento foram comparados com os valores iniciais do treinamento. Esses resultados permitem concluir que a interrupção de um programa de exercícios com pesos livres produz efeito negativo na força muscular de mulheres idosas, especialmente após a 8ª semana.

The purpose of this study was to verify the interruption effect of a muscle strengthening training program on muscle strength through one maximum repetition test in elderly women. Before interruption, eight healthy elderly women (x: 64.3 ± 7.6 yr.) were engaged in a muscle strengthening training program for 12 weeks, 3 times per week, 3 sets of 10 repetitions at 50% of one maximum repetition test (1-RM) in six exercises for both upper and lower limbs. The 1-RM test was performed immediately after the training period and subsequently every four weeks (4th, 8th and 12th week). Values showed a statistically significant decrease on muscle strength of lower and upper limbs, specially after 8 weeks. In the 12th week, lower and upper limb muscle strength decreased 27.5% to 35.1%, respectively; however, decrease was more remarkable in the upper limb. A greater capacity of muscle strength maintenance after training interruption was observed in the lower limb (22.9% to 71.9%) than in the upper limb (-14.8% to 16.1%) when the absolute values of the detraining period were compared to the values at the beginning of the training period. These data allowed the authors to conclude that the weight training program interruption leads to a negative impact on muscle strength of elderly women, specially after 8 weeks.

Este estudo teve como objetivo: 1) verificar a estabilidade do perfil de aptidão física de jovens atletas de handebol durante a adolescência; e 2) comparar os resultados com a seleção paulista adulta feminina. Para tanto, a amostra foi constituída por cinco jovens atletas de handebol feminino que foram seguidas semilongitudinalmente por dois anos, com média de idade e tempo de prática inicial e final de 14,2 ± 1,3 anos, 18,4 ± 10,7 meses e 16,2 ± 1,3 anos, 42,8 ± 10,7 meses, respectivamente (12h/semana de treinamento). Na temporada de 1997 quatro atletas foram pré-selecionadas para a seleção brasileira de cadetes. As variáveis mensuradas foram: peso corporal (P); altura total (A); impulsão vertical sem (IVS) e com auxílio dos membros superiores (IVC); impulsão horizontal (IH); agilidade (SR); velocidade (50m) e potência anaeróbica (40seg.), seguindo padronização CELAFISCS. Os coeficientes de Pearson e Spearman foram significativamente altos e muitos altos (p < 0,05) para P (0,88), A (0,98 e 0,99), 50m (0,95 e 0,90) e 40seg. (0,87 e 0,90). Estes dados permitem concluir que as jovens atletas apresentaram alta estabilidade nas variáveis antropométricas, velocidade e potência anaeróbica durante um período de dois anos da adolescência, favorecendo a hipótese de que a expectativa de sucesso esportivo pode ser predita em idades precoces.

The purpose of this study was 1) to verify the stability of the physical fitness profile of young handball athletes during adolescence, and 2) to compare these athletes to the São Paulo state handball adult team. The sample comprised five young female handball athletes who were followed-up for two years, with mean age and practice time before and after of 14.2 ± 1.3 years-old, 18.4 ± 10.7 months and 16.2 ± 1.3 years-old, 42.8 ± 10.7 months, respectively (12h/week training). Variables measured were: body weight (W); body height (H); vertical jump without (VJWo) and with help of arms (VJ); long jump (LJ); agility (SR); velocity (50m) and anaerobic power (40seg.), by CELAFISCS standardization. It was verified that with the exception of VJW and 50m, the young athletes showed upper values for all variables. The Pearson and Spearman coefficients were significantly higher and much higher (p < 0.05) for W (0.88), H (0.98 and 0.99), 50m (0.95 and 0.90) and 40 sec (0.87 and 0.90). Data permit to conclude that young athletes showed stability in anthropometric variables, velocity, and anaerobic power during the adolescence period, thus supporting the hypothesis that the expectation of success in sports can be predicted from early age.
