O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar situações estressantes envolvendo a maternidade no primeiro ano de vida do bebê e o apoio social recebido. Participaram do estudo 39 mães adultas, primíparas, que viviam com seus companheiros. As mães foram entrevistadas quando o bebê tinha um ano de vida. Os resultados revelaram a existência de diversas situações estressantes e houve maior solicitação de apoio social durante essas situações, e quando este foi recebido auxiliou as mães tanto do ponto de vista emocional como prático. Os resultados sugerem que apoio social dado à mãe mostra-se fundamental tanto para ela como para a sua relação com o/a filho/a.

The aim of the present study was to investigate stressful situations related to the experience of motherhood and social support in the baby's first year of life. Thirty-nine primiparous adult mothers, who lived with their partners, took part in the study. The mothers were interviewed when the baby was a year old. The results show a number of mothers reported stressful situations during baby's first year of life, especially in the first months. There was greater request for social support during these situations, and when this was received, it helped mothers both from an emotional and a practical point of view. The results suggest that social support given to the mother is fundamental both for her and for her relationship with her child.

A escolha de um cuidado alternativo para o bebê ou criança pequena geralmente não é tarefa fácil para os pais e envolve a análise de vários fatores. Isto fica mais difícil ainda quando esta escolha precisa ser feita nos primeiros meses de vida do bebê. O presente artigo tem por objetivo discutir os fatores que influenciam na escolha de um cuidado alternativo (i.e., parente, babá, creche) para o bebê e criança pequena e as vantagens e desvantagens apontadas pelos pais para as diferentes formas de cuidado. Dentre os fatores envolvidos no processo de decisão dos pais estão: a situação financeira e social da família; o apoio social recebido nos cuidados da criança; as práticas e crenças parentais sobre o cuidado das crianças; a escolaridade dos pais; a idade da criança; e o grupo étnico. Os estudos apontam que um cuidado alternativo adequado não só tranqüiliza os pais, como contribui para o desenvolvimento do bebê e para que seja mantida a qualidade da interação pais-bebê.

The choice of an alternative care for the infant is not an easy task for parents and it involves the analysis of several factors. It is even harder when this choice has to be made in the first months of the baby's life. This article aims to discuss the factors which have influence in choosing an alternative care (i.e., relatives, baby sitter, and day care) for the infant, and the advantages and disadvantages mentioned by parents for the different ways of care. The factors involved in the decision process for the parents are: the financial and social status of the family, the social support received in taking care of the child, and the ethnic group. Research shows that a proper alternative care not only relaxes and reassures parents as well as contributes to the development of the infant and keeps the quality of the parent-child bond.

Embora haja consenso entre os pesquisadores sobre a complexidade do período de adaptação à creche, existem ainda inconsistências sobre o momento mais adequado para se colocar o bebê na creche, quanto ao conceito de adaptação e como avaliar este período. Este estudo examinou como educadoras de creches públicas e particulares caracterizavam a adaptação dos bebês de 4-5 meses e 8-9 meses. Quarenta e uma educadoras responderam a um questionário aberto que examinava como era feito o processo de adaptação, sua duração, os casos de bebês que apresentavam retrocesso após estarem adaptados e os fatores que interferiam na adaptação. Análise de conteúdo revelou algumas diferenças entre as concepções de adaptação dos bebês das duas faixas etárias. Segundo as educadoras a adaptação dos bebês de 8-9 meses requer maior preparação e cuidado, sendo em alguns aspectos uma etapa mais crítica do que a do outro grupo. Houve também diferenças entre os indicadores mencionados para as duas faixas etárias.

Although there is consensus among researchers about the complexity of the period of adaptation to daycare center, inconsistencies still exist about the most adequate moment for the child's entry into daycare center, about the concept of adaptation and how to assess this period. This study examined the way teachers in public and private daycare center characterized the adaptation of babies 4-5 months of age and babies 8-9 months of age. Fourty-one teachers answered a questionnaire which examined the way the adaptation process was carried out, its duration, cases where babies retroceded after being adapted and the factors which interfered in the adaptation. Content analysis revealed some differences between the conceptions of adaptation in each age group. Teachers believe that the adaptation of babies of 8-9 months requires greater preparation and care, being considered, in some cases, a more critical process than the adaptation of the other age group. There were also differences among the mentioned indicators between the two age groups.

O presente artigo examina algumas questões teóricas e estudos empíricos acerca do ingresso de bebês e crianças pequenas à creche. Analisa-se, em particular, a problemática da separação precoce e as conseqüências para o desenvolvimento infantil do ingresso na creche durante o primeiro ano de vida. Discute-se, ainda, os fatores que interferem na adaptação à creche e as estratégias de enfrentamento utilizadas pelos bebês e crianças pequenas para se adaptar e enfrentar às situações potencialmente estressantes no contexto da creche. Embora haja consenso sobre a complexidade do período de adaptação à creche, existem inconsistências entre os estudos sobre o período mais adequado para ingresso na creche, sendo que algumas idades são apontadas como mais críticas. De qualquer modo, a adaptação à creche depende de diversos fatores, o que não permite fazer previsões com base em um ou outro fator isoladamente.

The present article examines some theoretical aspects and empirical studies related to the entry of babies and small children into daycare center. The problems of early separation and its consequences to child development are also examined. Futhermore, it discusses the factors which interfere in adaptation to the daycare center and the infant's coping strategies to deal with potentially stressful events. Although there is consensus about the complexity of the period of adaptation to daycare center, there are some inconsistencies among the studies about the most adequate period for entering daycare center, some ages being pointed out as more critical. In any case, the adaptation to daycare center depends on various factors, which makes it impossible for us to make predictions based on any isolated factor.
