ABSTRACT Purpose: to synthesize the evidence of available studies in the literature regarding the benefit of the cochlear implant in children with additional diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and to verify the protocols used to validate the abilities of auditory perception and oral language of this population. Methods: an integrative literature review, searching in LILACS, MEDLINE/PubMed and SciELO databases and in the Google Scholar. Studies in Portuguese and English that assessed auditory and/or spoken language skills of children using cochlear implants with autism spectrum disorder were included. Literature Review: 16 studies were included. In 72.18% of cases, autism spectrum disorder was diagnosed when the child was already using a cochlear implant. Studies have shown limited benefit from cochlear implants for the studied population. Parents need to be oriented regarding their expectations about the use of the device. Conclusion: the benefit of using a cochlear implant for children with an additional diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder is limited and lower than the results obtained by children who do not have additional diagnoses. RESUMO Objetivo: sintetizar as evidências de estudos disponíveis na literatura a respeito do benefício do implante coclear em crianças com diagnóstico adicional de transtorno do espectro autista e verificar quais os protocolos utilizados para a avaliação das habilidades de percepção auditiva e de linguagem falada dessa população. Métodos: trata-se de revisão integrativa da literatura. A busca foi realizada nas bases de dados LILACS, PubMed e SciELO e no Google Acadêmico. Foram incluídos estudos nos idiomas português e inglês, que avaliaram habilidades auditivas e/ou de linguagem falada de crianças usuárias de implante coclear com transtorno do espectro autista. Revisão de Literatura: 16 estudos foram incluídos. Em 72,18% dos casos, o diagnóstico do transtorno do espectro autista foi concluído quando a criança já fazia uso do implante coclear. Os estudos demonstram benefício limitado do dispositivo para a população estudada. É necessário que os pais sejam orientados a respeito das expectativas com o uso do dispositivo. ABSTRACT Autism Spectrum Disorder is not an adverse condition for cochlear implantation, but the goals and expectations about the effects on hearing and language outcomes are different from the group of children without other impairments. The objective of this study was to analyze the development of auditory and oral language skills of a child with autism who underwent early cochlear implantation surgery and was included in an auditory (re)habilitation program using the aural-oral method. There was no benefit from the device for the development of oral language, and the child was referred to another communicative method. After 2 years and 9 months using the cochlear implants, there was little benefit from the use of the device for the development of auditory skills, with the child evolving to recognize only his own name. RESUMO O transtorno do espectro autista não é uma contraindicação para o implante coclear, mas as metas e expectativas sobre os efeitos nos resultados da audição e da linguagem são diferentes em relação ao grupo de crianças sem outros comprometimentos. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o desenvolvimento das habilidades auditivas e de linguagem falada de uma criança com transtorno do espectro autista submetida precocemente à cirurgia de implante coclear e inserida em um programa de (re)habilitação auditiva no método aurioral. Observou-se que não houve benefício do dispositivo para o desenvolvimento da linguagem falada, tendo a criança sido encaminhada para outro método comunicativo. RESUMO A Síndrome de Silver Russel (SSR) é uma condição geneticamente heterogênea com fenótipo clínico que inclui restrição do crescimento intrauterino e pós-natal, alterações craniofaciais, assimetrias corporais, baixo índice de massa corporal e dificuldades alimentares. Há expectativa de alterações do desenvolvimento motor, da coordenação global e de fala. O presente estudo tem como objetivo apresentar características da síndrome, do neurodesenvolvimento e comunicação de três crianças do sexo masculino, com diagnóstico da síndrome, na faixa etária de 16, 18 e 44 meses, respectivamente. Cumpriram-se os critérios éticos. Foi realizada análise de prontuário, com objetivo de coletar informações da anamnese realizada com os responsáveis, e da avaliação realizada com as crianças. A avaliação foi realizada por meio da aplicação dos seguintes instrumentos: Observação do Comportamento Comunicativo (OCC), Teste de Screening de Desenvolvimento Denver-II (TSDD-II) e o Early Language Milestone Scale (ELMS). O levantamento de características confirmou a hipótese da SSR; na OCC verificou-se atraso nos comportamentos comunicativos para todos os participantes; no TSDD-II verificou-se atraso nas habilidades motora grossa, motora fina-adaptativa, linguagem e pessoal social. Na ELM verificou-se escores aquém do esperado para as funções auditiva receptiva e auditiva expressiva com habilidades receptivas mais desenvolvidas do que as habilidades expressivas. A SSR merece ser reconhecida pela comunidade científica, uma vez que as características fenotípicas e os dados de vida pregressa, possibilitam que seja levantada a hipótese da síndrome, visando o diagnóstico correto precocemente e um planejamento terapêutico que minimize os efeitos deletérios desta condição.

ABSTRACT Silver Russell Syndrome (SRS) is a genetically heterogeneous condition with a clinical phenotype that includes intrauterine and postnatal growth restriction, craniofacial alterations, body asymmetries, low body mass index, and feeding difficulties. Alterations in motor development, global coordination, and speech are expected. The current study aims to present the syndrome, neurodevelopment, and communication characteristics of three male children diagnosed with the syndrome, aged 16, 18, and 44 months, respectively. Ethical principles were followed. An analysis of the medical records, aiming to collect information of the anamnesis, conducted with the guardians, and of the assessment carried out with the children was performed. The assessment was performed by applying the following instruments: Communicative Behavior Observation (CBO), Development Screening Test Denver-II (TSDD-II), and the Early Language Milestone Scale (ELMS). The survey of characteristics confirmed the SRS hypothesis; it was verified a delay in communicative behavior for all participants in CBO; in TSDD-II there was a delay in gross motor, fine motor-adaptive, language, and social personal skills. Scores below expectations were found for receptive auditory and expressive auditory functions, with receptive abilities more developed than expressive abilities, in ELM. The SRS deserves to be recognized by the scientific community, since the phenotypic characteristics and the data from the previous life allow the hypothesis of the syndrome to be raised, aiming at an early correct diagnosis and therapeutic planning that minimizes the harmful effects of this condition.

RESUMO Objetivo Comparar o desempenho das habilidades motora grossa, motora fina-adaptativa, linguagem, cognitiva e pessoal-social de meninas entre 36 e 70 meses com hipotireoidismo congênito tratado no período pós-natal com seus pares sem alterações tireoidianas. Método Participaram 15 meninas com diagnóstico de hipotireoidismo congênito, com idade cronológica variando de 36 a 70 meses no Grupo Experimental (GE); e 15 meninas sem alterações tireoidianas no Grupo Comparativo (GC), pareadas por idade cronológica e nível socioeconômico. Os instrumentos de avaliação utilizados foram: Entrevista com os pais; Teste de Vocabulário por Imagem Peabody (TVIP-R); e Teste de Triagem do Desenvolvimento de Denver II (TTDD-II). Foi realizada a avaliação psicológica, quanto ao nível intelectual, com a aplicação da Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale (SBIS). A estatística foi realizada por meio de análise descritiva, teste “t” de Student e Teste de Mann-Whitney, nível de significância de p <5%. Resultados Na comparação do TVIP-R e SBIS, houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre o GE e o GC. Na comparação entre as áreas do TTDD-II, houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre os grupos para as áreas de Linguagem, Motora Grossa e Motora Fina-Adaptativa. Conclusão O presente estudo confirmou a interferência do Hipotireoidismo Congênito no desenvolvimento infantil, mesmo quando diagnosticado e tratado precocemente, levando a mudanças no desenvolvimento que podem trazer prejuízos nas áreas motora, cognitiva e linguística.

ABSTRACT Objective To compare the performance in gross motor, fine motor-adaptive, language, cognitive and personal-social development skills of girls with a mean age of 36 to 71 months with Congenital Hypothyroidism treated from the neonatal period with that of their peers without thyroid alterations. Methods The participants included in the study were 30 children aged between 36 and 70 months divided into two groups paired for chronological age and socioeconomic status: 15 girls diagnosed with Congenital Hypothyroidism – Experimental Group (EG) and 15 girls without thyroid changes – Control Group (CG). The following assessment instruments were used: Interview with parents, Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test - Revised (PPVT-R), and Denver Developmental Screening Test - 2nd edition (DDST-II). Psychological testing of intellectual functioning was conducted with application of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale (SBIS). The descriptive statistical analysis was performed using Student's t-test and the Mann-Whitney test at a significance level of 5% (p<0.05). Results Comparison of the PPVT-R and SBIS results showed a statistically significant difference between the EG and CG. Comparison of the DDST-II results showed a statistically significant difference between the groups for the fine motor-adaptive, language and gross motor areas. Conclusion The present study confirms that Congenital Hypothyroidism affects child development, even when children are diagnosed and treated early, leading to alterations that can impair their motor, cognitive and language development.

RESUMO A Síndrome de Klinefelter é uma aneuploidia cromossômica causada por cromossomos X adicionais em homens. O diagnóstico é realizado por meio de observação clínica e exame de cariótipo. O fenótipo envolve, entre outras características, a infertilidade, hipogonadismo, ginecomastia, alterações cognitivas, principalmente no domínio da linguagem. Este trabalho descreve o caso de um adolescente com Síndrome de Klinefelter e histórico de dificuldades no processo de aprendizagem, problemas de comportamento e de comunicação. Cumpriram-se os princípios éticos. Seu perfil cognitivo-comunicativo, pragmático e sintático foi traçado a partir das avaliações fonoaudiológica e neuropsicológica. Os resultados encontrados na avaliação fonoaudiológica foram indicativos de déficits de expressão e compreensão. Além de alterações de consciência fonológica, dificuldades em operações matemática, leitura e escrita, dificuldade de acessar o léxico, alteração de pragmática e, algumas vezes, com alteração na sintática. Os resultados da avaliação neuropsicológica indicaram prejuízos em tarefas que exigiram a identificação de similaridades, estabelecimento de relações de causa-efeito e analogias, demonstrando raciocínio comprometido para operações lógicas, com nível intelectual incompatível à idade cronológica. Este estudo clínico interdisciplinar favorece condutas interventivas nos processos de reabilitação com o intuito de maximizar o potencial do indivíduo afetado, contribuindo para melhoria da qualidade de vida.

ABSTRACT The Klinefelter syndrome is a chromosomal aneuploidy caused by additional X chromosomes in men. The diagnosis is made by clinical observation and karyotype examination. Besides other characteristics, the phenotype involves infertility, hypogonadism, gynecomastia, and cognitive alterations, mainly in the language domain. This paper describes the case of a teenager with Klinefelter syndrome and history of difficulties in the learning process, behavioral and communication problems. The ethical guidelines were followed in the present report. The cognitive-communicative, pragmatic and syntactic profile was drawn from the speech and neuropsychological evaluations. The speech-language assessment showed deficits in expression and comprehension. Difficulties were also found in phonological awareness, mathematical operations, reading and writing, access to the lexicon, alterations in pragmatics and occasionally, in syntactics. The neuropsychological evaluation indicated impairments in tasks that require the identification of similarities, establishment of cause-effect relationships and analogies, demonstrating a compromised reasoning for logical operations, with intellectual level incompatible with the chronological age. This interdisciplinary clinical study favors intervention approaches in rehabilitation, to maximize the potential of the individuals affected, contributing to improve their quality of life.

Abstract Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the performance of children in preschool age who were born premature and term, without neurological injury, regarding receptive and expressive language skills, and to reflect on the importance of these skills for performance in preschool. Materials and Methods Two groups named Preterm Group and Comparison Group, each composed by 40 children, as well as 80 legal representatives (mothers) and 80 teachers of the participants. To pair the groups, we considered chronological age (months), sex, educational level, type of school (public or private) and socioeconomic status. To assess the groups we used structured and semi-structured Observation of Communicative Behavior and applied the ABFW Child Language Test - Part B-Vocabulary and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test. To assess the legal representatives we applied an anamnesis questionnaire and the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory. The assessment of the teachers consisted of the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory and a Student Assessment Protocol developed by the authors. Results For the observation of communicative behavior, the categories with the highest losses were: narrative, maintaining dialogic activities and attention difficulties. In the ABFW Child Language Test and Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test there were statistically significant differences. In the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory there were statistically significant differences in expressive vocabulary, but no differences in receptive vocabulary, for both the mothers and the teachers. Conclusion Children born prematurely with low risk of neurological sequelae in preschool age may have greater difficulties in linguistic performance than their peers born to term.

RESUMO Objetivo Comparar o desempenho de crianças nascidas prematuras de baixo peso (BP) e muito baixo peso (MBP) com crianças nascidas a termo na faixa etária de um a três anos, quanto ao desenvolvimento infantil, nos domínios motor grosso; motor fino adaptativo; pessoal-social; e linguagem. Método Estudo de coorte transversal. A amostra foi constituída por 150 crianças nascidas prematuras (grupo experimental) e a termo (grupo comparativo), divididas em oito grupos, quanto ao peso (baixo peso: abaixo de 2500 gramas e muito baixo peso: abaixo de 1500 gramas) e faixa etária (de 12 a 24 e de 25 a 36 meses). Os grupos comparativos foram pareados aos experimentais quanto ao gênero, idade cronológica e nível socioeconômico. A avaliação constou da aplicação do protocolo de anamnese, classificação socioeconômica e do Teste de Screening de Desenvolvimento Denver-II (TSDD-II). Foi realizado o cálculo da idade corrigida para as crianças prematuras de idade até 24 meses. Utilizou-se análise estatística descritiva e o Teste “t” Student. Resultados Na comparação entre os grupos de prematuros e nascidos a termo, houve diferença estatisticamente significante para todos os domínios avaliados. Conclusão O desempenho de crianças nascidas prematuras foi inferior quando comparado ao desempenho de crianças nascidas a termo, nos domínios motor grosso, motor fino adaptativo, pessoal-social e linguagem. Neste estudo, os grupos de prematuros obtiveram desempenho distintos, ou seja, no mesmo grupo existiram desempenhos normativo, na média e abaixo.

ABSTRACT Purpose To compare the performance of children born premature with low birth weight (LBW) and very low birth-weight (VLBW) with that of children born at term, within the age range of one to three years, regarding child development in the gross motor, fine motor-adaptive, personal-social and language domains. Methods This is a cross-sectional study in a cohort of 150 infants born premature (experimental group) and at term (control group) divided into eight groups with respect to weight (low birth weight: <2500 grams and very low birth weight: <1500 grams) and age range (aged 12 to 24 and 25 to 36 months). The control groups were paired with the experimental groups as for gender, chronological age, and socioeconomic level. Assessment comprised the application of anamnesis protocol, socioeconomic classification, and Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST-II). Corrected age was calculated for premature children up to 24 months of age. Descriptive statistical analysis and the Student’s t-test were used. Results No statistically significant difference was found in the comparison between the groups of infants born premature and at term for all domains evaluated. Conclusion The performance of infants born premature was lower than that of infants born at term regarding the gross motor, fine motor-adaptive, personal-social and language domains. In this study, the preterm groups presented different performances, i.e., normative, average, and below average performances were observed within the same group.

RESUMO A síndrome de Joubert (SJ) é uma condição genética heterogênea, rara, do grupo das ciliopatias. Mais de 20 genes foram identificados relacionados com este fenótipo. As principais manifestações incluem hipotonia, ataxia, atraso psicomotor, apraxia oculomotora e anormalidades respiratórias neonatais. O objetivo deste artigo foi apresentar achados de linguagem e neurodesenvolvimento de um indivíduo com diagnóstico da SJ. Foi realizada a anamnese, avaliação genética clínica, observação do comportamento comunicativo, avaliação da linguagem, o Teste de Screening de Desenvolvimento Denver-II (TSDD-II) e a Early Language Milestone Scale (ELMS). Os principais achados da Ressonância Magnética do encéfalo mostraram grave hipoplasia do vérmis cerebelar, “sinal do dente molar”, tronco cerebral hipoplásico, atrofia dos hemisférios cerebelares. A avaliação da linguagem mostrou ausência de oralidade, prejuízo na recepção da linguagem, confirmando o diagnóstico de transtorno de linguagem, com grau de comprometimento grave. O TSDD-II e a ELMS comprovaram a observação e avaliação clínica e indicaram atraso grave nos domínios motor, autocuidados e de linguagem receptiva e expressiva. Diante da presença de hipotonia, ataxia, atraso psicomotor e anormalidades respiratórias neonatais é imprescindível a realização de exame por imagem e avaliação genética para o diagnóstico desta condição, tão complexa, com necessidades terapêuticas peculiares. Este conjunto de achados, associado à história familial e características fenotípicas peculiares reforçam o diagnóstico genético clínico da SJ. Esta síndrome genética é pouco reconhecida e merece ser apresentada para o reconhecimento da comunidade científica, visando o diagnóstico correto e planejamento terapêutico que minimize os efeitos deletérios desta condição.

ABSTRACT The Joubert syndrome (JS) is a rare, heterogeneous genetic condition among the ciliopathies. More than 20 genes have been identified associated with this phenotype. The main manifestations include hypotonia, ataxia, psychomotor retardation, ocular-motor apraxia and neonatal respiratory abnormalities. The objective of this paper was to present language and neurodevelopmental findings of an individual diagnosed with JS. The following procedures were performed: anamnesis, clinical genetic evaluation observation of communicative behavior, evaluation of language, the Denver Developmental Screening Test II (DDST-II) and the Early Language Milestone Scale (ELMS). The main findings of the MRI brain showed severe hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis, “molar tooth sign”, hypoplastic brain stem and atrophy of the cerebellar hemispheres. The observation and evaluation of the language showed no oral, impaired reception of language, confirming the diagnosis of language disorder with severe degree of impairment. The DDST-II and the ELMS confirmed the observation and clinical assessment and indicated serious delay in motor domains, self-care and receptive and expressive language. Given the presence of hypotonia, ataxia, delayed psychomotor and neonatal respiratory abnormalities it is essential to carry out examination imaging and genetic evaluation for the diagnosis of this condition, so complex, with unique therapeutic needs. This set of findings, along with the familial history and unique phenotypic characteristics reinforce the clinical genetic diagnosis JS. This genetic syndrome is rarely recognized and deserves to be presented to the recognition of the scientific community, targeting the correct diagnosis and treatment planning that minimizes the deleterious effects of this condition.

RESUMO A Doença de Moyamoya (DMM) é uma forma incomum de doença cerebrovascular oclusiva que acomete artérias do sistema nervoso central, acarretando alterações adquiridas de linguagem e dificuldades na aprendizagem. O objetivo foi descrever habilidades de linguagem oral/escrita e cognitivas em menina com diagnóstico de DMM de sete anos e sete meses. A avaliação constou de entrevista com pais, Observação do Comportamento Comunicativo, Teste de Vocabulário por Imagem Peabody, Teste de Desempenho Escolar, Perfil de Habilidades Fonológicas, Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Teste Gestáltico Visomotor Bender, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. Até os seis anos e cinco meses, ocorreram dois episódios de acidente vascular encefálico (AVE) em região temporoparietal esquerda e direita e área frontal esquerda. Realizou cirurgia para revascularização e tratamento medicamentoso. Avaliações audiológicas e oftalmológicas indicaram normalidade. Cursa o segundo ano do ensino fundamental. Apresentou alterações na linguagem oral e escrita (silábico-alfabética); não nomeação de todos os grafemas; escrita e aritmética média-inferior e leitura inferior à primeira série; habilidades do processamento fonológico em nível pré-escolar. A avaliação psicológica indicou nível intelectual satisfatório, porém prejuízo no desempenho cognitivo em tarefas verbais e de execução, limitações nas competências gráfico-percepto-motoras e na organização sequencial lógica. Os episódios de AVEs trouxeram interferências no desempenho dos processos de aprendizagem pelas especificidades das áreas afetadas, interferindo na análise, integração e interpretação de informações auditivas e visuais relevantes para os processos de aprendizagem.

ABSTRACT Moyamoya disease is an unusual form of occlusive, cerebrovascular disorder that affects the arteries of the central nervous system, causing acquired language alterations and learning difficulties. The study aim was to describe the oral/written language and cognitive skills in a seven-year-and-seven-month-old girl diagnosed with Moyamoya disease. The assessment consisted of interviews with her parents and application of the following instruments: Observation of Communicative Behavior, Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, Academic Performance Test, Profile of Phonological Awareness, Raven’s Progressive Matrices Test, Special Scale, Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Bender Visual Motor Gestalt Test, and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. Two episodes of stroke in the left and right temporal-parietal and left frontal areas occurred until the age of six years and five months. Revascularization surgery and medication treatment were conducted. The audiologic and ophthalmologic assessments indicated normality. At the time of the study, the girl was attending the second grade of elementary school. She presented changes in oral and written language (syllabic-alphabetic), non-naming of all graphemes, low arithmetic and writing means, reading skill below first grade level and psycholinguistic delay, and pre-school level phonological processing skills. The psychological evaluation indicated satisfactory intellectual level; however, it also showed cognitive performance impairment in verbal and execution tasks and limitations on graphic-perceptual-motor skills and sequential logic organization. The stroke episodes influenced the performance of learning processes, affecting the analysis, integration, and interpretation of relevant visual and auditory information.

RESUMO Objetivo Comparar o desempenho nas habilidades de linguagem receptiva e expressiva de crianças com fissura labiopalatina com crianças sem fissura labiopalatina e com desenvolvimento típico de idade cronológica entre 12 e 36 meses. Método Participaram do estudo 60 crianças, com idade cronológica entre 12 e 36 meses; 30 do grupo experimental, com fissura labiopalatina, e 30 crianças do grupo comparativo, sem fissura labiopalatina, com desenvolvimento típico. Os grupos foram pareados quanto ao gênero, idade cronológica (em meses) e nível socioeconômico. Os procedimentos constaram de análise de prontuário, anamnese com os familiares e da aplicação da Early Language Millestone Scale (ELMS) . Na análise do prontuário, verificou-se que 63,34% das crianças apresentavam fissura transforame incisivo unilateral; 16,66%, transforame incisivo bilateral; e 20%, pós-forame. As crianças com fissura labiopalatina realizaram as cirurgias (queiloplastia e/ou palatoplastia) nas idades recomendadas e participavam de programas de intervenção fonoaudiológica; 40% apresentaram histórico de otites de repetição e 50% frequentavam escolas. O estudo estatístico contou com a aplicação do teste de Mann Whitney com o nível de significância p <0,05. Resultados Houve diferença estatisticamente significante na comparação entre os grupos em relação às habilidades receptivas e expressivas. Conclusão O grupo de crianças com fissura labiopalatina apresentou desempenho inferior, estatisticamente significante, nas habilidades de linguagem receptiva e expressiva quando comparado com crianças sem fissura labiopalatina.

ABSTRACT Purpose To compare the performance in the abilities of receptive and expressive language of children with cleft lip and palate with that of children without cleft lip and palate with typical 12 to 36-month chronological development. Method The sample consisted of 60 children aged 12 and 36 months: 30 with cleft lip and palate diagnosis and 30 without cleft lip and palate diagnosis with typical development. The groups were paired according to gender, age (in months), and socioeconomic level. The procedures consisted of analysis of medical records, anamnesis with family members, and valuation of the Early Language Milestone Scale (ELMS). The chart analysis showed 63.34% of the children with unilateral cleft lip and palate, 16.66% with bilateral incisive transforamen cleft, and 20% with post-foramen cleft. Children with cleft lip and palate underwent surgeries (lip repair and/or palatoplasty) at the recommended ages and participated in early intervention programs; 40% presented recurrent otitis history, and 50% attended schools. Statistical analysis included the use of the Mann Whitney test with significance level of p <0.05. Results There was a statistically significant difference between the groups regarding receptive and expressive skills. Conclusion The group of children with cleft lip and palate showed statistically significant low performance in receptive and expressive language compared with children without cleft lip and palate.

Objetivo comparar o desempenho das habilidades comunicativas, de crianças nascidas prematuras, prematuras extremas e típicas de idade cronológica entre dois e três anos. Métodos participaram do estudo 72 crianças distribuídas em quatro grupos: 20 prematuros (GE-I), 16 prematuros extremos (GE-II) e 36 crianças com desenvolvimento típico (GC-I e GC-II), de idade cronológica entre dois a três anos. Houve pareamento quanto à idade cronológica e sexo. A avaliação constou da aplicação do Protocolo de Anamnese e Observação do Comportamento Comunicativo. O tratamento estatístico constou do Teste “t” Student e do Teste de Mann-Whitney (p ≤ 0,05). Resultados na comparação entre os grupos de prematuros e típicos (GE-I e GC-I e GEII e GC-II), quanto às habilidades comunicativas verificou-se diferenças significantes, apesar da heterogeneidade no desempenho dos prematuros e prematuros extremos. Na comparação entre os prematuros (GE-I e GE-II) não foram observadas diferenças significantes, entretanto, GE-I obteve desempenho superior em todas as categorias, exceto para a categoria uso de gestos. As categorias de menor ocorrência para GE-I foram: respeitar troca de turno, participar e manter atividade dialógica. Para o GE-II foram: participar e manter atividade dialógica, realizar ordens complexas, iniciar e respeitar troca de turno, funções de informar, oferecer e produzir frases. Conclusão houve diferenças significantes no desempenho comunicativo das crianças prematuras e prematuras extremas, quanto comparadas às crianças típicas, mas não houve diferenças significantes na comparação entre os prematuros. Apesar dos resultados indicarem que os grupos de prematuros tendem ao atraso no desenvolvimento das habilidades comunicativas, os grupos não demonstraram ser homogêneos.

Purpose to compare the performance of communicative skills in children born preterm, extremely preterm and typical with chronological age between two and three years. Methods participated in the study 72 children were divided into four groups: 20 preterm infants (GE-I), 16 extremely preterm infants (GE-II) and 36 children (GC-I and GC-II) with typical development, chronological age between two to three years, matched for age chronological and sex. The evaluation consisted of the application of the Protocol Anamnesis and Communicative Behavior Observation. Statistical analysis consisted of “t” Student and Mann-Whitney test (p ≤ 0.05). Results comparing the premature and typical groups (GE-I and GC-I and GE-II and GC-II), regarding communication skills, there were significant differences, despite the heterogeneity in performance of preterm and extremely preterm infants. Comparing the premature (GE-I and GE-II) showed no significant differences, however, GE-I got superior performance in all categories, except for category gestures. The categories of lower occurrence for GE-I were: respect shift change, participate and maintain dialogic activity. For GE-II were: participate and maintain dialogic activity, perform complex orders, and start respecting turn-taking, report functions, provide and produce sentences. Conclusion there were significant differences in communicative performance of preterm and extremely preterm, as compared to typical children, but there were no significant differences when comparing the preterm groups. Although the results indicate that the premature groups tend to delay the development of communication skills, but the groups have not shown to be homogeneous.
