ABSTRACT Gallery Forests are narrow strips of tropical forests that occur along water courses. This vegetation type is common in Central Brazil and is extremely relevant for the biodiversity conservation, maintenance of ecological processes and water regulation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the woody vegetation in two gallery forests in the Federal District, called Ribeirão gallery forest (RGF) and Pitoco gallery forest (PGF). Fifty plots of 10 m x 10 m were sampled in each forest, and all trees with DBH ≥ 5 cm were measured. In each forest, we conducted analysis on phytosociological parameters, diameter and height distributions, and diversity indexes. We registered 1,571 woody individuals, belonging to 150 species, among which, 94 were recorded in the forest of Ribeirão (RGF) and 96 in the forest of Pitoco (PGF). Although only 40 species (26.7%) occurred in both forests, the Chao-Sorensen similarity index was 0.478, showing the high Beta diversity within these formations. The species richness of the two forests is above the average observed in other gallery forests in Brazil, with Shannon diversity index (H’) equal to 3.86 for RGF and 3.96 for PGF, and the Pielou evenness index (J’) equal to 0.85 and 0.87, respectively. The diametric distribution of both forests showed the reverse J-shaped pattern, suggesting communities with satisfactory regeneration. Floristic and structural distinctions both between and within forests, alongside the observed high richness, indicate great biological heterogeneity, in response to the different environmental conditions. RESUMO Matas de galeria são faixas estreitas de florestas tropicais que ocorrem ao longo dos cursos d’água na região do Brasil central e são de extrema relevância para a conservação da biodiversidade, manutenção de processos ecológicos e regulação hídrica. Com o objetivo de caracterizar a vegetação lenhosa em dois trechos de matas de galeria no Distrito Federal, foi realizada amostragem em 1,0 ha, sendo 50 parcelas de 10 m x 10 m em cada trecho, onde foram mensuradas todas as árvores com DAP ≥ 5 cm. Para cada mata foram realizadas análises fitossociológicas, investigados os padrões de distribuição diamétrica e hipsométrica e analisados os índices de diversidade. Foram mensurados 1.571 indivíduos lenhosos, pertencentes a 150 espécies, dentre as quais 94 foram registradas na mata do Ribeirão (MR) e 96 na mata do Pitoco (MP). Apenas 40 espécies (26,7%) ocorreram em ambas as matas. O índice de similaridade Chao-Sorensen foi igual a 0,478, evidenciando a elevada diversidade Beta destas formações. RESUMO O manejo eficaz de florestas perturbadas requer um conhecimento adequado da dinâmica florestal. Neste estudo, avaliamos a mudança de uma floresta manejada em 18 parcelas permanentes de 1 hectare localizadas na floresta tropical de terra firme no leste da Amazônia (Brasil, Paragominas). Todos os indivíduos com diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP) ≥ 20 cm foram avaliados em duas avaliações separadas realizadas em 2006 e 2016. Os resultados indicam que, dez anos após a exploração, a floresta manejada apresenta um desequilíbrio nas taxas de recrutamento (1,54% ao ano) e mortalidade (2,23% ao ano), sugerindo que a floresta ainda está em processo de recuperação estrutural. No entanto, a biomassa mostrou um aumento após a exploração, atingindo 28,49 toneladas por hectare. As características das mudanças indicam que a floresta está em um processo silvigenético impulsionado pela exploração madeireira. ABSTRACT The effective management of disturbed forests requires adequate knowledge of forest dynamics. In this study, we assessed the changes in a managed forest using 18 permanent 1 ha plots located in a ‘terra firme’ tropical rainforest in the Eastern Amazon (Paragominas, Brazil). All individuals with a diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 20 cm were evaluated in two separate assessments conducted in 2006 and 2016. The results show that, ten years after logging, the managed forest exhibits an imbalance between recruitment (1.54% per year) and mortality (2.23% per year) rates, indicating that it is still in the process of recovering its structure. Nevertheless, biomass tended to increase after logging (28.49 tons per hectare). The characteristics of these changes suggest that the forest is undergoing a silvigenetic process driven by the effects of logging. Abstract Cerrado is the second largest biome in Brazil, and it is responsible for providing us several ecosystem services, including the functions of storing Carbon and biodiversity conservation. In this study, we developed a modeling approach to predict the Aboveground biomass (AGB) in Cerrado vegetation using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), vegetation indices retrieved from RapidEye satellite imagery, and field data acquired within the Federal District territory, Brazil. Correlation testing was performed to identify potential vegetation index candidates to be used as input in the AGB modeling. Several ANNs were trained to predict the AGB in the study area using vegetation indices and field data. The optimum ANN was selected according to criteria of mean error of the estimate, correlation coefficient, and graphical analysis. The best performing ANN showed a predictive power of 90% and RMSE less than 17%. The validation tests showed no significant difference between the observed and ANN-predicted values. We estimated an average AGB of 16.55± 8.6 Mg.ha-1 in shrublands in the study area. Our study results indicate that vegetation indices and ANNs combined could accurately estimate the AGB in the Cerrado vegetation in the study area, showing to be a promising methodological approach to be broadly applied throughout the Cerrado biome. Abstract We compared sampling techniques in a managed native forest in Paragominas, Pará, Brazil. Our goal in this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using Double Sampling (DS) and Sampling with Partial Replacement (SPR), when compared to Continuous Forest Inventory (CFI), to estimate the wood stock for trees with DBH ≥ 20 cm in a managed forest. In our results, DS had the best volume prediction, generating a sampling error of 5.20% (11.48 m³ ha-1) on the second occasion 3.86% (8.78 m³ ha-1). The average volume increment, estimated for the forest in the monitored period (2014-2016) was 6.88 m³ ha-1, with a relative sampling error of 63.09%. Therefore, as an alternative and of low cost, we suggest using DS in successive forest inventories in monitoring areas of forest resources in the Brazilian Amazon. RESUMO O conhecimento do perfil do fuste é em uma ferramenta importante no manejo da produção florestal, sendo o mesmo influenciado por diversos fatores, como o regime de condução do povoamento. O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar a influência de dois regimes de condução do povoamento sobre o perfil do fuste de Eucalyptus urophylla, na região sudoeste da Bahia. Foram utilizados dados de povoamentos conduzidos pelo regime de alto fuste e talhadia. Os modelos de afilamento propostos por Kozak, Demaerschalk, Ormerod, Garcia e Garay foram ajustados, sendo selecionado aquele com melhor desempenho nas estatísticas de ajuste e análise gráfica de resíduos, para cada regime de condução. Os modelos selecionados foram validados utilizando o teste do qui-quadrado (α = 0,05). Diante dos modelos selecionados, foram estimados os valores do diâmetro ao longo do fuste da árvore média, permitindo avaliar o perfil do fuste para cada regime de condução do povoamento. O teste de identidade de modelos mostrou que o regime de condução do povoamento influencia a forma do fuste das árvores, sendo necessário o ajuste de uma equação específica para cada situação. O fuste tende a apresentar forma mais cilíndrica em povoamento conduzido sob regime de talhadia e mais cônica no regime de condução por alto fuste.

ABSTRACT The study of the bole profile is an important tool in the forest production management, which is influenced by several factors, such as the stand conduction regime. This work aimed to evaluate two stand conduction regimes regarding the Eucalyptus urophylla bole in the southwest region of the Brazilian state, Bahia. The data used was retrieved from stands conducted under high forest and coppice regimes. The tapering models proposed by Kozak, Demaerschalk, Ormerod, Garcia and Garay were adjusted, being selected the ones that presented better performances regarding adjustment statistics and graphic analysis of residue for each conduction regime. The models selected were validated by the chi-squared test (α = 0,05). Considering the models selected, it was possible to estimate the value of the diameter along the bole of the average-tree, allowing to evaluate the bole profile for each stand conduction regime. The identity test of the models showed that the stand conduction regime affects the shape of the trees' bole, making a necessity to adjust a specific equation for each situation. The bole tends to present a cylindrical form in a stand conducted in a coppice regime and conical one in a high forest regime.

RESUMO: Objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar a composição florística, a estrutura da vegetação e os grupos ecológicos das espécies arbóreas em área de cerradão em Palmas, Tocantins. Foi realizado um inventário florestal em área de 10,15 hectares, utilizando amostragem sistemática com parcelas de 400 m², onde foram amostradas e identificadas todas as árvores vivas e mortas em pé, com DAP ≥ 5 cm. Na análise da suficiência amostral utilizou-se a regressão linear com resposta em platô (REGRELRP). A diversidade florística foi avaliada pelo o índice Shannon (H') e a estrutura horizontal pelo o Índice de Valor de Importância (IVI). Na análise da estrutura vertical, a floresta foi classificada em três estratos. A REGRELRP revelou que a intensidade amostral foi adequada. Predominam na área as famílias Fabaceae e Chrysobalanaceae, e as espécies Myrcia splendens, Emmotum nitens e Qualea parviflora. O grupo composto por espécies pioneiras predominam (613 indivíduos ha-1), e as climácicas (530 indivíduos ha-1). No quesito riqueza, as espécies clímax sobressaíram (57 espécies), pioneiras (25 espécies). A diversidade alfa florística foi de 3,35 nats indivívideos-1 e o valor de equabilidade de Pielou J = 0,76. A distribuição diamétrica apresentou comportamento exponencial negativo e balanceada. Em relação aos estratos verticais, a menor quantidade de indivíduos é encontrada no estrato superior (13%), a maior no estrato médio (63%) e o estrato inferior (24%). A área estudada foi caracterizada como estruturada e diversa conforme composição florística e fitossociológica encontrada, apresentou heterogeneidade de espécies, predominantemente clímax. O cerradão apresentou bom estado de conservação, demostrando sua capacidade de resiliência a pequenos distúrbios.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to characterize the floristic composition, vegetation structure and ecological group of tree species in a cerradão forest (Cerrado biome) of Palmas, Tocantins State, Brazil. A forest inventory was performed in an area of 10.15 hectares, using systematic sampling with plots of 400 m², in which all standing trees, alive and dead, that had diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 5 cm were sampled and identified. A linear plateau regression model (LPR) was used for sample sufficiency analysis. The Shannon index (H') was used for assess the floristic diversity, and the Importance Value Index (IVI) for assess the horizontal structure. The forest was classified in three strata according to vertical structure analysis. The LPR showed that the sampling size was adequate. The predominate species in the area were Myrcia splendens, Emmotum nitens and Qualea parviflora, and species from the families Fabaceae and Chrysobalanaceae. The pioneer (613 individuals ha-1) and climax (530 individuals ha-1) species were the predominating groups. Regarding the richness index, the number of climax (57 species) and pioneer (25 species) species stood out. The alpha floristic diversity was 3.35 nats individuals-1 and the Pielou equability value J = 0.76. The diametric distribution showed a negative and balanced exponential pattern. Regarding the vertical stratification, the smallest amount of individuals was in the upper stratum (13%) and the highest in the mid stratum (63%) and in the lower stratum (24%). The use of floristic composition tools with horizontal and vertical structure analysis was effective for understand the tree community, which may be considered structured and diverse, thus able to restructure possible disturbances when preserved.

Resumo:O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficácia da aplicação de modelos de análise de regressão e redes neurais artificiais (RNAs) na predição do volume de madeira e da biomassa acima do solo, da vegetação arbórea em área de cerradão. Volume de madeira e biomassa foram estimados com equações alométricas desenvolvidas para a área de estudo. Os índices de vegetação, como variáveis preditoras, foram estimados a partir de imagens do sensor LISS-III, e a área basal foi determinada por medições na floresta. A precisão das equações foi verificada pela correlação entre os valores estimados e observados (r), erro-padrão da estimativa (Syx) e gráfico residual. As equações de regressão para o volume de madeira total e do fuste (0,96 e 0,97 para r, e 11,92 e 9,72% para Syx, respectivamente) e para a biomassa (0,91 e 0,92 para r, e 22,73 e 16,80% para Syx, respectivamente) apresentaram bons ajustes. As redes neurais também apresentaram bom ajuste com o volume de madeira (0,99 e 0,99 para r, e 4,93 e 4,83% para Syx) e a biomassa (0,97 e 0,98 r, e 8,92 e 7,96% para Syx, respectivamente). A área basal e os índices de vegetação foram eficazes na estimativa do volume de madeira e biomassa para o cerradão. Os valores reais de volume de madeira e biomassa não diferiram estatisticamente dos valores estimados pelos modelos de regressão e redes neurais (χ2ns); contudo, as RNAs são mais acuradas.

Abstract:The objective of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of regression models and artificial neural networks (ANNs) in predicting wood volume and aboveground biomass of arboreal vegetation in area of tall Cerrado (a forest, savanna-like vegetation). Wood volume and biomass were estimated with allometric equations developed for the studied area. The vegetation indices, as predictor variables, were estimated from LISS-III sensor imagery, and the basal area was determined from field measurements. Equation precision was verified by the correlation between estimated and observed values (r), standard error of estimate (Syx), and by the residual plot. The regression equations for total wood volume and bole volume (0.96 and 0.97 for r, and 11.92 and 9.72% for Syx, respectively), as well as for aboveground biomass (0.91 and 0.92 for r, and 22.73 and 16.80% for Syx, respectively) showed good adjustments. The neural networks also showed good adjustments for both wood volume (0.99 and 0,99 for r, and 4.93 and 4.83% for Syx) and biomass (0.97 and 0.98 for r, and 8.92 and 7.96% for Syx, respectively). Basal area and vegetation indices were effective in estimating wood volume and biomass for the tall cerrado vegetation. Measured wood volume and aboveground biomass did not differ statistically from the predicted values by both the regression models and neural networks (χ2ns); however, the ANNs are more accurate.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo agrupar espécies com características de teor de umidade e densidade básica da madeira semelhantes para compor cargas mistas de espécies para secagem em câmaras industriais de secagem da madeira. Foram amostradas nove espécies em floresta de terra firme na Amazônia Central com três repetições por espécie. Em todas as espécies os teores de umidade não diferiram entre base e topo do tronco, o que confere estabilidade da madeira durante o processo de secagem. Os valores de densidade básica variaram de 0,561 a 0,904 g cm-3. A partir do presente estudo foi possível separar as espécies em três grupos com base na densidade básica e teor de umidade, o primeiro com as espécies Minquartia guianensis, Lecythis poiteaui, Mezilaurus itauba, Manilkara huberi e Brosimum rubescens que são consideradas madeiras pesadas (densidade variando de 0,835 a 0,904 g cm-3) , de secagem mais lenta ou difícil. O segundo grupo contem as espécies Clarisia racemosa e Ocotea rubra (densidade média de 0,665 e 0,720 g cm-3, respectivamente) e o terceiro grupo com as espécies Parkia paraensis e Brasimum parinarioides que apresentam densidade média e secagem rápida (densidade de 0,561 e 0,588 g cm-3, respectivamente).

The aim of this work was to group species with similar moisture content and basic wood density in order to compose mixed species loads for industrial kiln drying. Nine tree species with three repetitions each were sampled at an Upland Forest in Central Amazonia. For all the species the moisture content was the same for top and base portions of the trunk, which gives stability during wood drying processes. The basic wood density values varied from 0,561 to 0,904 g cm-3. The species were divided in three groups based on basic density and moisture content; the first one included the species Minquartia guianensis, Lecythis poiteaui, Mezilaurus itauba, Manilkara huberi and Brosimum rubescens which are considered dificult or slow drying heavy woods (density ranging between 0,835 to 0,904 g cm-3). The second group was composed with the species Clarisia racemosa and Ocotea rubra (avarage density of 0,665 and 0,720 g cm-3, respectively), the third group includes Parkia paraensis and Brasimum parinarioides that showed average density and were considered fast drying woods (density of 0,561 e 0,588 g cm-3, respectively).

RESUMO Estudos sobre técnicas de amostragem adequadas e precisas para quantificar a produção de frutos de espécies nativas do Cerrado ainda são muito raros, o que configura uma lacuna para a formulação de Planos de Manejo Sustentáveis para o Bioma. Este estudo foi realizado em uma área de cerrado sensu stricto, localizada na Reserva Ecológica e Experimental da Universidade de Brasília, Distrito Federal, com o objetivo de avaliar a eficiência da amostragem aleatória de ramos para quantificar a produção de frutos de Caryocar brasiliense Camb. (pequi). Na área de cerrado sensu stricto previamente inventariada floristicamente, foi selecionado um indivíduo de Caryocar brasiliense em período de frutificação para aplicação da amostragem aleatória de ramos. A produção de frutos foi estimada pelo método de amostragem aleatória de ramos, testada por duas técnicas de seleção de ramos: probabilidade uniforme e probabilidade proporcional ao diâmetro do ramo. A validação do método foi feita pela comparação com a produção real quantificada pelo censo dos frutos. O erro de amostragem para uma intensidade amostral de dez caminhos foi igual a 99,92 % usando a técnica de probabilidade uniforme para seleção de ramos e igual a 61,45 % usando a técnica de probabilidade proporcional ao diâmetro. Concluiu-se que a amostragem aleatória de ramos, empregando as técnicas de probabilidade uniforme e de probabilidade proporcional ao diâmetro, foi imprecisa e inexata para o caso estudado. Por essa razão, é necessário realizar novos estudos e propor modificação na técnica de amostragem aleatória de ramos que permita gerar estimativas da produção de frutos de Caryocar brasiliense com pequeno erro de tendência e de amostragem.

ABSTRACT Studies on sampling techniques appropriate and accurate for measuring the yield of native species of Cerrado are still very rare, constituting a gap in the formulation of Sustainable Management Plans for the Biome. This study was conducted in an area of cerrado sensu stricto, located in the Experimental Ecological Reserve of the University of Brasilia, Federal District, with the objective of evaluate the efficiency of randomized branch sampling to quantify the yield of fruits of Caryocar brasiliense Camb. (Pequi). After a floristic inventory in the area of cerrado sensu stricto, it was selected one tree of Caryocar brasiliense in the fruiting period for application of randomized branch sampling. The production of fruits of Pequi was estimated by randomized branch sampling, tested by two techniques of selection of branches: uniform probability and probability proportional to the diameter of the branch. The validation of the method was made by comparison with the actual production, defined by the total count of fruits. The sampling error for a sampling intensity of ten paths was equal to 99.92%, using the technique of uniform probability and equal to 61.45%, using the technique of probability proportional to the diameter of the branch. It was concluded that the randomized branch sampling, using the techniques of uniform probability and probability proportional to its diameter, was imprecise and inaccurate for the study case. For this reason, it is necessary to carry out further studies and some modification on the technique that allows generate estimates of the fruit production of Caryocar brasiliense with small errors and without tendency.

O objetivo do trabalho foi estimar o estoque de carbono da parte aérea (troncos, galhos e serapilheira) e subterrânea (raízes e solo) da vegetação lenhosa de um cerrado sensu stricto, localizado na Fazenda Água Limpa, da Universidade de Brasília, Distrito Federal. A área de estudo foi amostrada a partir de parcelas de 20 x 50m alocadas sistematicamente. Em cada parcela foram inventariados todos os indivíduos lenhosos arbóreo-arbustivos, vivos e mortos em pé, com no mínimo 5 cm de diâmetro tomado a 30 cm do solo. Foram realizadas também coletas da biomassa de serapilheira; da biomassa de raízes (fina, média e grossa) e da densidade e teor de carbono no solo. A profundidade máxima adotada para a coleta de biomassa da parte subterrânea foi de 2 m. A maior parte do carbono correspondeu ao compartimento solo (88,7%), superando bastante as raízes (7,3%), onde as concentrações foram de 271,23 e 22,38 toneladas por hectare, respectivamente. Troncos e galhos totalizaram 8,60 toneladas de carbono por hectare e a serapilheira, 3,62 toneladas de carbono por hectare.

In each plot, it was uplifted all the woody shrubby-arboreous individuals, being live and stand dead, with at least 5 cm of diameter taken at 30 cm from the ground level. It was also performed collections of litter biomass, roots biomass (fine, medium and thick) and density and soil carbon concentration. The maximum depth adopted for collection of belowground section was 2 meters. Most of the carbon corresponded to soil compartment (88.7%), which was much more than the roots (7.3%), where the concentrations were 271.23 and 22.38 tons per hectare, respectively. Stems and branches totalized 8.60 tons of carbon per hectare and litter, 3.62 tons of carbon per hectare.

RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi utilizar as técnicas de geoprocessamento na aquisição, manipulação, espacialização e visualização de dados do padrão de qualidade de estradas florestais, e na confecção de mapas temáticos, com a identificação de pontos críticos para o transporte de madeira, servindo como subsídio para o desenvolvimento de um programa de manutenção preventivo e regular. Identificaram-se e avaliaram-se a integridade e as condições de operação de estradas florestais mediante levantamento contínuo de defeitos na superfície de rolamento e obtenção do ICRNP (índice de condição da rodovia não-pavimentada). A base de dados georreferenciada, a alocação das unidades amostra e a espacialização da rede viária foram obtidas com auxílio da imagem do satélite CBERS II, modelo de elevação do terreno SRTM, e GPS. A identificação e a avaliação das rodovias, por meio de levantamentos detalhados em campo, demonstraram as condições da superfície de rolamento das rodovias, gerando informações sobre os trechos mais críticos e a intensidade de cada defeito, apontando ainda ações e base de custos para manutenção das estradas florestais. As técnicas de geoprocessamento, GPS, sensoriamento remoto e SIG mostraram-se como eficientes ferramentas para a interpretação, qualificação e quantificação de fenômenos naturais da região de estudo e para auxílio na gerência de pavimentos das estradas florestais. O SIG integrou os dados referentes aos padrões de operação e manutenção das rodovias à base de dados georreferenciada, manipulando, espacializando e disponibilizando visualmente, por meio de mapas, as informações geradas.

ABSTRACT This purpose of this research was to apply geoprocessing techniques for data acquisition, preparation, georeference, and display for assessing quality standards of forest roads and mapping critical points of the timber transportation, which contribute to support the development of a pavement preventive and ordinary maintenance program. First, the road pavement integrity and condition were assessed by conducting a continuous survey on road defects and estimating the NPRCI (Non-Paved Road Condition Index). The georeferenced dataset, the sampling unit’s allocation, and the road network spatial location were conducted using satellite (CBERS-II) and SRTM imagery and GPS field data. The road identification and the assessment of pavement condition were based on a detailed field survey, which revealed the road pavement conditions and derived useful supporting information regarding the most critical parts of the forest road and its defect severity, also pointing out practical measures to fix them, estimating costs for the required road maintenance. The Geoprocessing techniques, GPS, remote sensing dataset, and GIS showed to be efficient tools for identifying, mapping, and quantifying this natural phenomenon in the region being studied and may support the definition of maintenance program of non-paved forest roads. Results showed that the GIS could integrate the dataset containing standards of forest road ordinary operation and maintenance to a geographic database, which subsequently allowed to georeference, manipulate, and display this information on thematic maps.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi estimar o volume de árvores de uma floresta tropical de terra firme, considerando apenas o diâmetro da cepa (d0) como variável independente. A área de estudo está localizada no município de Breu Branco, PA. Um total de 113 árvores com DAP = 51 cm, pertencentes a diferentes espécies e classes de diâmetro, foram cubadas rigorosamente. A cubagem rigorosa foi feita pelo método de Hohenadl, considerando a divisão do tronco comercial em dez seções de comprimentos iguais e o cálculo do volume de cada seção da tora foi feito pela fórmula de Smalian. Equações de volume foram ajustadas para estimar o volume comercial das árvores em função de d0e também em função do DAP, para efeito de comparação. Os resultados mostraram que d0 apresentou boa relação com o volume comercial de árvores em floresta de terra firme, e pode ser utilizado no ajuste de modelos matemáticos visando a estimar o volume comercial de árvores. Não foi observada diferença significativa entre os valores reais de volume comercial de árvores e os volumes estimados, gerados partindo de uma equação linear ajustada em função de d0, demonstrando que é possível obter com precisão, informações de volume partindo de d0.

ABSTRACT This research aimed to estimate the volume of trees of a “terra-firme” tropical forest, considering only the diameter at stump height (d0), as independent variable. The area being studied is located in Breu Branco, Pará. A total of 113 trees with DBH = 51 cm, of different species and diameter classes, were selected to determine the observed cubic volume of the commercial trunk. The trees were rigorously cubed by the method of Hohenadl considering the division of the commercial trunk in ten sections of equals lengths, and the volume of each section of the trunk was determined by the Smalian formula. Equations were adjusted to estimate the commercial volume of the trees in function of d0 and in function of DBH, for comparisons. Results showed that d0 had a high correlation with the commercial volume of trees within the area of forest of “terra firme” and it can be used for the adjustment of mathematical models in order to estimate the commercial volume of trees. No significant difference between the observed and the estimated volume of trees - generated by the adjusted linear equation in function of d0 - was found.

RESUMO Este estudo foi realizado na Floresta Nacional do Tapajós, Pará, e avaliou o efeito de quatro diferentes métodos de corte de cipós na condução do manejo florestal, visando à produção de madeira em toras. Cada método abrangeu uma área de 96 ha e a metodologia consistiu em cortar os cipós em torno de todas as árvores comerciais e potencialmente comerciais (Método M1), apenas na área de ocorrência de árvores comerciais e potencialmente comerciais (Método M2), em torno de todas as árvores comerciais e potencialmente comerciais e na direção de queda (Método M3) e apenas em torno das árvores comerciais destinadas à primeira colheita (Método M4). Foram avaliados: área afetada com a derrubada da árvore selecionada; grau de danos nos indivíduos remanescentes; quantidade de indivíduos perdidos por árvore derrubada; redução de área basal da floresta por causa de árvores destruídas com a derrubada da árvore selecionada; e o custo para se efetuar o corte de cipós de acordo com cada método. Com exceção dos custos, em todas as outras variáveis analisadas os métodos utilizados não diferiram estatisticamente. O método M4, com o menor custo e valores absolutos razoáveis nas outras variáveis, pode ser considerado o melhor deste estudo, além de a população de cipós ser melhor preservada em relação aos demais métodos de corte analisados, mantendo, assim, sua importante função ecológica na floresta.

ABSTRACT This study took place in the Tapajós National Forest, Pará State, and evaluated the effects of four different cutting methods of lianas/vines on conducting forest management, aiming at the production of logs for wood production. Each method comprised an area of 96 ha and method M1 - consisted of cutting of the lianas around all existing commercial and potentially commercial trees; according to method M2 - the lianas were cut only in the area of occurrence of commercial and potentially commercial trees; ind method M3 - the lianas around all commercial and potentially commercial trees and in their falling direction and method M4 - the lianas were cut only around those commercial trees chosen for the first harvest. The area affected by the felling of the selected tree was assessed by the degree of damage on remnant individuals; quantity of lost individuals per each felled tree; reduction of the basal forest area caused by trees destroyed due to the falling of the selected tree; and the cost to accomplish the cutting of lianas/vines according to each cutting method. No significant different les were found for the variables in all analysed methods, except costs. Method M4, was the least expensive and showed reasonable absolute values for the other variables, may be considered the best of this study. In this method, the lianas population is better preserved than the other cutting methods analysed, maintaining their important ecological function in the forest.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar o efeito do fogo na estrutura e composição florística de uma área de 10 ha de cerrado sensu stricto, localizada na fazenda Água Limpa da Universidade de Brasília. Foram realizados dois inventários, sendo o primeiro em 1999, logo após a área ter sido totalmente queimada, devido a um incêndio criminoso, e o segundo em novembro de 2002. Quatro parcelas de 0,1 ha (20 x 50 m) foram tomadas, aleatoriamente, na área queimada. Todos os indivíduos lenhosos arbóreos vivos, com Db (diâmetro tomado a 0,30 m do solo) igual ou superior a 3 cm, foram identificados botanicamente, e seus diâmetros e alturas foram registrados. Valores de densidade, dominância, freqüência e índice de valor de cobertura foram obtidos para os dois levantamentos. A avaliação da similaridade florística entre os dois inventários foi realizada para dados qualitativos (presença e ausência de espécies), a partir do índice de Sfrensen. Os resultados mostraram que houve pouca mudança na composição florística da comunidade durante o período estudado. Entre os dois inventários houve um aumento de aproximadamente 125% na densidade por hectare. A similaridade entre os dois levantamentos foi alta (índice de Sfrensen igual a 0,68). A densidade florística, obtida a partir do índice de Shannon, foi baixa (cerca de 2,5) nas duas épocas monitoradas, quando comparada com pesquisas a longo prazo no cerrado sensu stricto da FAL (cerca de 3,5). Contudo, este valor é comum em áreas de cerrado que sofreram distúrbios. No segundo inventário, realizado três anos após o fogo, surgiram 13 espécies novas na área, o que comprova a sua recuperação e recolonização.

This research aimed to evaluate the effect of fire on the structure and floristic composition of a 10 ha cerrado sensu stricto area located at the Ecological and Experimental Reserve of the University of Brasilia, Fazenda Água Limpa-FAL. Two assessments were conducted in the area: the first, after the area had suffered a criminal fire in 1999, and the second in 2002. A sample of four 20 x 50 m permanent plots was assessed. All individuals with stems 5 cm diameter at 0,30 m (Db) from the ground level were registered, and had their Db and total height measured. Density, basal area, frequency and value of covering index were calculated for the two assessments. The floristic similarity between the two surveys was evaluated for qualitative data (presence and absence of species) based on the Sfrensen Index. Few changes were observed in the floristic composition of the community during the studied period. There was an increase of 125% in density by hectare from 1999 to 2002. A high similarity (Sfrensen Index equal to 0.68)was found between the two assessments while diversity (Shannon Index) was small (about 2.5). This value is smaller than those found in natural areas of the Cerrado sensu stricto at Fazenda Água Limpa, although it is common in areas with disturbances. Three years after fire 13 new species were verified in the area.

Stryphnodendron adstringens, conhecida como barbatimão, é uma espécie de distribuição geográfica ampla no bioma cerrado, ocorrendo desde o Pará, pelo planalto central, até Minas Gerais e São Paulo. Sua casca e frutos contêm tanino e apresentam propriedades medicinais. É uma espécie de baixa exigência nutricional e não acumuladora de alumínio. É hermafrodita e polinizada por pequenos insetos, especialmente abelhas. Está entre as principais espécies lenhosas encontradas na área de estudo. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os eventos fenológicos desta espécie, numa área de cerrado sensu stricto na Fazenda Água Limpa (15°56'S e 47°46'W), durante cinco anos (1987-1991). Dez árvores foram selecionadas e observadas de 18/01/1987 até 07/11/1991 a intervalos quinzenais. A estacionalidade pluvial do clima foi bem definida durante o período de observação. Os padrões fenológicos foram analisados graficamente, pelo teste de Kruskall-Wallis a 5% e pelo coeficiente de correlação de Spearman. Todos os indivíduos floriram anualmente exceto dois que não floriram em 1990, provavelmente como conseqüência da queimada em 1989. A floração ocorreu entre julho e novembro, sendo que os picos variaram entre os anos. Todos os indivíduos frutificaram até 1989 quando os frutos foram abortados pela queimada. Nenhuma frutificação foi observada no ano seguinte e em 1991 a produção de frutos atingiu apenas a metade daquela observada nos dois primeiros anos. A espécie apresenta modelo fenológico anual com floração, frutificação, dispersão de sementes e picos de senescência e de emissão de folhas novas, todos na estação seca. Seus frutos requerem um longo período de maturação, cerca de 12 meses, alcançando a maturidade na época seca do ano seguinte. Queimadas ocasionais afetaram, de maneira acentuada, as atividades reprodutivas, especialmente a frutificação.

Stryphnodendron adstringens, popularly known as barbatimão, is widely distributed in the cerrado bioma from Pará, in the Amazon region, to the Brazilian central plateau reaching the Southeast (Minas Gerais and São Paulo). Its bark and fruits countain taninn and have medicinal properties. Its nutritional requirements are low and it doesn't accumulate aluminium. Flowers are hermaphrodite and pollinated by small insects, especially bees. It is one of the main woody species found in the site studied. The objective of this paper is to analyse the phenological events of this species in an area of cerrado sensu stricto in the Fazenda Água Limpa (15°56'S and 47°46'W) from 1987 to 1991. Ten trees were observed from january/18/1987 to november/07/1991. The climate is Köppen Aw, with a well-marked seasonality. Phenological patterns were graphically analysed, by Kruskall-Wallis test at 5% and by Spearman Rank Correlation. Annual leaf change patterns were similar over the five-year period. All individuals flowered each year, except for two that did not flower in 1990, one year after an accidental burning. Flowering occurred between July to November with the peaks varying over the years. All individuals produced fruits until 1989 when they were aborted by the burning. No fruiting was observed in the following year and just half of the fruit production was observed in 1991. The phenological model is annual with flowering, fruiting, seed dispersal, peaks of senescence and leaf flushing occurring in the dry season. Fruits take about one year to ripe. Occasional dry season fires deeply affected the reproductive activities, especially fruiting.
