A thorough knowledge of the variations in the patterns of muscle insertion and the consequent neurovascular entrapment due to them is important for orthopedic and plastic surgeons. During routine dissection, we encountered a unique occurrence of an accessory brachialis muscle (acBr) blending with the medial aspect of bicipital aponeurosis in the cubital fossa. It also entrapped the median nerve and brachial artery due to its superficial position. The abnormality reported here might result in neurovascular compression symptoms in the upper limb and possible mechanical advantages or disadvantage in the flexion of elbow joint. To the best of our knowledge, the brachialis variant insertion we present here is rare in the list of its anomalies. We also discuss in this report the embryological background and the clinical application of the variation that can abet clinicians in evaluating symptoms involving the upper limb.

Es importante para los cirujanos ortopédicos y plásticos, el conocimiento integral de las variaciones en los patrones de inserción de los músculos y el consiguiente atrapamiento neurovascular. Durante una disección de rutina, encontramos un caso único de un músculo accesorio braquial con aponeurosis bicipital en el lado medial de la fosa cubital. También cubre la arteria braquial y nervio mediano debido a su posición superficial. La anomalía informada aquí podría resultar en síntomas de compresión neurovascular en el miembro superior y las posibles ventajas o desventajas mecánicas de flexión de la articulación del codo. De acuerdo a lo estudiado, la inserción variante braquial que presentamos aquí es un caso raro dentro de la lista de sus variaciones. También se discuten en este informe la base embriológica y la aplicación clínica de la variación que puede ser útil para los clínicos en la evaluación de los síntomas relacionados con el miembro superior.

Problem based learning (PBL) made a great impact on the methodology of teaching. The major advantage of PBL method of teaching is integration of basic and clinical sciences in an integrated curriculum. This is achieved by presenting clinical problems to students which contain learning objectives from subjects related to the given clinical problems. In recent reports deficiencies have been reported regarding quantity of anatomy content of the clinical problems which has resulted in difficulty in understanding of theanatomy. We have made an attempt to quantify the content of anatomy and its sub-disciplines in PBL curriculum by a case study method using 'documentary analysis' at School of Medicine and Health Sciences, UCSI University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. From the results of our study it is apparent that learning objectives for anatomy is not sufficiently spread across all the clinical problems and there is very less coverage of the sub-disciplines of anatomy particularly osteology and embryology. The benefits of PBL method of teaching is definitely more than that of traditional method, the uneven distribution of anatomy and its sub-disciplines had a major impact on the students during their clinical years.

El aprendizaje basado en problemas (ABP) generó un gran impacto en la metodología de la enseñanza. La principal ventaja del método ABP es la integración de las ciencias básicas y clínicas en un curriculum integrado. Esto se consigue mediante la presentación de los problemas clínicos a los estudiantes, que contienen objetivos de aprendizaje de temas relacionados con los problemas propuestos. En informes recientes se han reportado deficiencias en cuanto a la cantidad de contenido de la anatomía en los problemas clínicos, lo que se ha traducido en dificultades en la comprensión de la anatomía. Hemos hecho un esfuerzo para cuantificar el contenido de la anatomía y sus sub-disciplinas en el curriculum de ABP mediante el método de estudio de caso con "análisis documental" en la Facultad de Medicina y Ciencias de la Salud, UCSI University, Kuala Lumpur, Malasia. A partir de los resultados de nuestro estudio es evidente que los objetivos de aprendizaje para la anatomía no se extienden suficientemente a través de todos los problemas clínicos, y hay poca cobertura de la anatomía en las sub-disciplinas, en particular osteología y embriología. Los beneficios del método de ABP en la enseñanza es, sin duda, mayor que la de los métodos tradicionales, además la distribución desigual de la anatomía y sus sub-disciplinas, tuvieron un gran impacto en los estudiantes durante sus años clínicos.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the anti-arthritic potential of the plant Justicia gendarussa using two different rat models. MATERIALS AND METHOD: The anti-arthritic potential of the alcoholic extract of the plant Justicia gendarussa was evaluated using the Freund's adjuvant-induced and collagen-induced arthritic rat models. The rats were treated with the ethanolic extract of Justicia gendarussa and with standard aspirin. RESULTS: The ethanolic extract of Justicia gendarussa showed significant anti-arthritic activity that was statistically similar to that of aspirin. Our results suggest that the alcoholic extract of Justicia gendarussa exhibits significant anti-arthritic potential.

INTRODUCTION: With the tremendous increase in number of mobile phone users world wide, the possible risks of this technology have become a serious concern. OBJECTIVE: We tested the effects of mobile phone exposure on spatial memory performance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Wistar rats (10-12 weeks old) were exposed to 50 missed calls/day for 4 weeks from a GSM (900/1800MHz) mobile phone in vibratory mode (no ring tone). After the experimental period, the animals were tested for spatial memory performance using the Morris water maze test. RESULTS: Both phone exposed and control animals showed a significant decrease in escape time with training. Phone exposed animals had significantly (~3 times) higher mean latency to reach the target quadrant and spent significantly (~2 times) less time in the target quadrant than age- and sex-matched controls. CONCLUSION: Mobile phone exposure affected the acquisition of learned responses in Wistar rats. This in turn points to the poor spatial navigation and the object place configurations of the phone-exposed animals.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of the petroleum ether extract of Cissus quadrangularis on the proliferation rate of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, the differentiation of marrow mesenchymal stem cells into osteoblasts (osteoblastogenesis) and extracellular matrix calcification. This study also aimed to determine the additive effect of osteogenic media and Cissus quadrangularis on proliferation, differentiation and calcification. METHODS: MSCs were cultured in media with or without Cissus quadrangularis for 4 weeks and were then stained for alkaline phosphatase. Extracellular matrix calcification was confirmed by Von Kossa staining. marrow mesenchymal stem cells cultures in control media and osteogenic media supplemented with Cissus quadrangularis extract (100, 200, 300 µg/mL) were also subjected to a cell proliferation assay (MTT). RESULTS: Treatment with 100, 200 or 300 µg/mL petroleum ether extract of Cissus quadrangularis enhanced the differentiation of marrow mesenchymal stem cells into ALP-positive osteoblasts and increased extracellular matrix calcification. Treatment with 300 µg/mL petroleum ether extract of Cissus quadrangularis also enhanced the proliferation rate of the marrow mesenchymal stem cells. Cells grown in osteogenic media containing Cissus quadrangularis exhibited higher proliferation, differentiation and calcification rates than did control cells. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that Cissus quadrangularis stimulates osteoblastogenesis and can be used as preventive/alternative natural medicine for bone diseases such as osteoporosis.

Padrões distintos de variações na drenagem venosa já foram observados. Durante a dissecção de rotina em nosso Departamento de Anatomia, observou-se um padrão incomum de drenagem das veias do lado esquerdo da face de um cadáver de meia idade. A veia facial apresentava curso normal de sua origem até a base da mandíbula, e então atravessava a base da mandíbula posteriormente à artéria facial. A seguir, juntava-se à divisão anterior da veia retromandibular para formar a veia facial comum, que drenava diretamente para a veia jugular externa. Um bom conhecimento anatômico da variação descrita acima nas veias faciais é essencial para garantir o sucesso que procedimentos cirúrgicos nessa região.

Different patterns of variations in the venous drainage have been observed in the past. During routine dissection in our Department of Anatomy, an unusual drainage pattern of the veins of the left side of the face of a middle aged cadaver was observed. The facial vein presented a normal course from its origin up to the base of mandible, and then it crossed the base of mandible posteriorly to the facial artery. Thereafter, it joined with the anterior division of retromandibular vein to form the common facial vein, which drained into the external jugular vein directly. Sound anatomic knowledge of the above variation in facial veins is essential to the success of surgical procedures in this region.

Este relato descreve uma variação nos vasos hepáticos e uma entrada anormal de artérias hepáticas no fígado, encontradas durante uma dissecção de rotina em um cadáver masculino de aproximadamente 43 anos. Uma artéria hepática acessória surgiu da artéria mesentérica superior e entrou no fígado no porta hepatis, ao passo que se constatou que a artéria hepática própria entrava no lobo hepático na fissura do ligamento venoso. Implicações clínicas desta variação são discutidas neste artigo.

This report describes a variation in blood vessels of the liver and abnormal entry of hepatic arteries into the liver found during routine dissection in an approximately 43-year-old male cadaver. An accessory hepatic artery arose from the superior mesenteric artery and entered the liver at the porta hepatis, whereas the proper hepatic artery was seen entering the left liver lobe at the fissure for ligamentum venosum. Clinical implications of such variation are discussed in the article.

As veias torácicas internas são veias comitantes de cada artéria torácica interna drenando o território suprido por ela e geralmente se unem em frente à terceira cartilagem costal. Esta única veia entra na veia braquicefálica correspondente. Apresentamos uma variação da veia mamária interna direita drenando para a veia cava superior em um cadáver masculino de 45 anos. O provável desenvolvimento e a significância clínica da veia são discutidos.

The internal thoracic veins are venae comitantes of each internal thoracic artery draining the territory supplied by it and usually unite opposite the third costal cartilage. This single vein enters the corresponding brachiocephalic vein. We present a variation of right internal mammary vein draining into superior vena cava in a 45-year-old male cadaver. Likely development and clinical significance of the vein are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to analyze the effect Cissus quadrangularis plant petroleum ether extract on the development of long bones during the intra-uterine developmental stage in rats. METHODS: Pregnant rats (n=12) were randomly assigned into either a control group (n=6) or a Cissus quadrangularis treatment (n=6) group. Pregnant rats in the Cissus quadrangularis group were treated with Cissus quadrangularis petroleum ether extract at a dose of 500 mg/kg body weight from gestation day 9 until delivery. The animals in the control group received an equal volume of saline. Newborn pups were collected from both groups for alizarin red S - alcian blue staining to differentiate ossified and unossified cartilage. The ossified cartilage (bone) was morphometrically analyzed using Scion image software. RESULTS: Morphometric analysis revealed that the percentage of the total length of ossified cartilage (bone) in pups born to treated dams was significantly higher (P<0.001- -0.0001) than that of the control group. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study suggest that maternal administration of Cissus quadrangularis petroleum ether extract during pregnancy can stimulate the development of fetal bone growth during the intra-uterine developmental period.

O conhecimento sobre a formação e as relações da veia porta é importante para cirurgiões e radiologistas. As variações no nível de formação e o padrão de formação da veia porta podem causar confusões durante procedimentos cirúrgicos e radiológicos. Neste relato, apresentamos uma variação na formação da veia porta encontrada durante as dissecções cadavéricas. A veia porta foi formada pela união da veia esplênica, veia mesentérica superior e veias mesentéricas inferiores. A terminação anormal da veia gástrica esquerda na veia mesentérica superior antes da formação da veia porta também foi observada no mesmo cadáver. A identificação dessas variações é útil para tratar a ruptura traumática do mesentério.

The knowledge about the formation and relations of the portal vein is important for surgeons and radiologists. The variations in the level of formation and the pattern of formation of portal vein might lead to confusions during radiological and surgical procedures. Here we present a rare variation in the formation of the portal vein as found during the cadaveric dissections. The portal vein was formed by the union of splenic vein, superior mesenteric vein and inferior mesenteric veins. The abnormal termination of left gastric vein into superior mesenteric vein before the formation of portal vein was also seen in the same cadaver. Identification of these variations is useful in managing traumatic rupture of the mesentery.

During the laboratory dissection of the fore arm, an accessory head of flexor pollicis longus muscle has been observed unilaterally in the right upper limb of a male cadaver. It took its origin from the under surface of flexor digitorum superficialis muscle just distal to the origin of this muscle from medial epicondyle. On further dissection we have noticed that, the accessory belly was running downwards to the medial aspect of the tendon of flexor pollicis longus muscle for its insertion. Its possible role in anterior interosseous syndrome is discussed in detail with a brief review

Durante una disección en el laboratorio se encontró en el antebrazo derecho de un cadáver de sexo masculino una cabeza accesoria del músculo flexor largo del pulgar. Ésta se originaba de la superficie profunda del músculo flexor superficial de los dedos, inmediatamente distal al origen de este músculo en el epicónddilo medial. El vientre accesorio se dirigía hacia abajo medial al tendón del músculo flexor largo del pulgar hasta su inserción. Se discute detalladamente su posible rol en el síndrome interóseo anterior

CONTEXTO: Considerando a escassez de informações atualmente disponíveis sobre artérias frênicas inferiores, umestudo mais definitivo nos pareceu apropriado e necessário, tanto por suas potenciais aplicações clínicas quanto para fornecer dados adicionais à literatura anatômica contemporânea. OBJETIVO: A maioria dos livros-texto de anatomia oferece muito poucas informações referentes à anatomia e distribuição da artéria frênica inferior (AFI). Por este motivo, a origem da AFI foi investigada e a literatura disponível foi revisada. MÉTODOS: Trinta e dois cadáveres humanos adultos preservados em formol e obtidos dos departamentos de anatomia do Kasturba Medical College, Manipal and Mangalore foram dissecados, e a origem da AFI foi investigada. RESULTADOS: A AFI teve sua origem habitual na aorta abdominal em 28 casos; no entanto, nos quatro casos restantes, duas originavam-se do tronco celíaco, uma da artéria gástrica esquerda e uma da artéria renal direita. CONCLUSÃO: A AFI geralmente origina-se da aorta ou artéria celíaca, e menos freqüentemente das artérias renal, hepática ou gástrica esquerda. A AFI é a maior fonte de fornecimento arterial colateral ou parasitado para carcinoma hepatocelular, ficando atrás somente da artéria hepática. A literatura sobre a origem da AFI e as implicações clínicas de variação em sua origem foram revisadas neste artigo.

BACKGROUND: Considering the paucity of information presently available concerning inferior phrenic arteries, a more definitive study seemed appropriate and necessary, both for its potential clinical applications and to provide additional data to contemporary anatomical literature. OBJECTIVE: Most anatomical textbooks of gross anatomy offer very little information concerning the anatomy and distribution of the inferior phrenic artery (IPA). For that reason, the origin of the IPA has been studied and the available literature has been reviewed. METHODS: Thirty-two human adult cadavers preserved in formalin obtained from the departments of Anatomy, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal and Mangalore were dissected and the origin of the IPA was studied. RESULTS: The IPA had its usual origin from the abdominal aorta in 28 cases but in the remaining four cases, two were arising from the celiac trunk, one from the left gastric artery and one from the right renal artery. CONCLUSION: The IPA usually originates from the aorta or celiac artery, and less frequently from the renal, hepatic or left gastric arteries. The IPA is a major source of collateral or parasitized arterial supply to hepatocellular carcinoma, second only to the hepatic artery. Literature on the IPA origin and clinical implications of variation in its origin have been reviewed in this article.
