Resumo Este estudo analisa a relação entre conhecimento sobre as mudanças climáticas e adoção de estratégias adaptativas de agricultores do Nordeste (bacia hidrográfica do Rio das Contas, Bahia). Metodologicamente, foi estimado um modelo Probit Bivariado Aparentemente Não Relacionado. Os resultados evidenciaram que conhecimento e adaptação são correlacionados e devem ser pensados de forma conjunta. Agricultores que conhecem os efeitos das mudanças climáticas têm maior probabilidade de adotar medidas adaptativas. Isso reforça a importância de se considerar a percepção, o conhecimento e as condições socioeconômicas dos indivíduos na formulação de políticas públicas de combate aos efeitos das mudanças climáticas.

Abstract We analyze the relationship between farmer’s knowledge about climate change and the adoption of adaptive strategies. The study area was the Brazilian Northeast (Rio das Contas basin, Bahia). Methodologically, we estimated a Seemingly Unrelated Bivariate Probit model. The results showed that knowledge and adaptation are correlated and should be considered together. Farmers who are aware of the climate change effects are more likely to adapt. This finding reinforces the importance of considering the perception, knowledge and socioeconomic conditions of individuals in the formulation of public policies to counteract the negative effects of climate change.

Resumo: O presente artigo analisou o papel desempenhado pelos sistemas agroflorestais (SAF’s) como medida adaptativa às mudanças climáticas no Brasil. Foi desenvolvido um modelo de efeito de tratamento (Propensity Score Matching), que permitiu identificar os principais determinantes do uso de SAF’s e se municípios nos quais essa técnica é utilizada são menos vulneráveis às mudanças climáticas. Os resultados indicaram que variáveis socioeconômicas (propriedade da terra, opções de financiamento, acesso a informações e assistência técnica) e agronômicas (disponibilidade de recursos hídricos e qualidade do solo) influenciam a adoção de SAF’s nos municípios brasileiros. As condições climáticas (temperatura e precipitação) também têm participação importante no emprego desses sistemas, o que confirma seu papel de estratégia adaptativa. Conclui-se também que os SAF’s têm potencial de melhorar o desempenho agrícola brasileiro, já que o valor da terra tende a ser maior em municípios onde esses sistemas são utilizados. Desse modo, os SAF’s podem tornar o setor agropecuário menos exposto aos efeitos negativos das mudanças climáticas, tanto no presente quanto em cenários futuros.

Abstract: This paper analyzes the role of agroforestry systems (AFS) as an adaptative measure to climate change in Brazil. A treatment-effects model (Propensity Score Matching) was developed. We identified the main determinants of the use of AFS and if the municipalities in which this technique is used are less vulnerable to climate change. The results showed that socioeconomic variables (land ownership, financing options, access to information and technical assistance) and agronomic variables (water resources availability and soil quality) influence the adoption of agroforestry systems in Brazilian municipalities. Climate conditions (temperature and precipitation) also play an important role in the use of these systems, which confirms their role as an adaptative strategy. It was also concluded that the AFS have the potential to improve the Brazilian agricultural performance due to the fact that the land value tends to be higher in municipalities where these systems are used. Thus, the AFS can make the agricultural sector less exposed to the negative effects of climate change in both the present and in future scenarios.

O melhoramento genético representa importante estratégia adaptativa para lidar com os efeitos das mudanças climáticas, principalmente mediante o desenvolvimento de sementes resistentes à seca ou elevadas temperaturas. Dessa forma, o presente trabalho apresenta uma análise de adaptação às mudanças climáticas enfatizando a adoção do melhoramento genético em fazendas brasileiras. O objetivo do trabalho foi investigar como as mudanças climáticas irão afetar a adoção do melhoramento genético e o lucro dos produtores. Foram utilizadas projeções de temperatura e precipitação para o período entre 2010-2099, considerando dois diferentes cenários climáticos (A1B e A2), de acordo com o 4º Relatório de Avaliação do IPCC (2007). Analiticamente, estimou-se um modelo de Efeito de Tratamento. Os resultados indicam que a probabilidade de utilizar sementes transgênicas irá aumentar de 74% no cenário atual para 86% em 2020, 83% em 2050 e 81% em 2080. Os produtores que adotarem essa estratégia adaptativa apresentarão lucros maiores. Nas áreas onde o melhoramento genético é utilizado na agricultura, os valores da terra serão maiores em ambos os cenários climáticos. Os produtores adaptados estarão menos expostos às consequências negativas das mudanças climáticas. Nesse sentido, verifica-se a necessidade de investimento em estratégias de adaptação para que o Brasil possa superar os efeitos adversos das mudanças climáticas.

Plant breeding through the development of seeds resistant to water stress or high temperature is an important adaptive strategy to cope climate change. In this way, by providing an analysis of adaptation to climate change using genetic breeding on Brazilian farms, this work aims to investigate how climate change will affect the adoption of genetic breeding and profitability of farmers. Temperature and rainfall projections for 2010-2099 time periods were used, considering different climate scenarios (A1B and A2), according to the 4th Assessment Report of IPCC (2007). A Treatment Effects model outlines the analytical framework in this study. Our results indicate the probability of adopting transgenic seeds will grow from 74% in the current period to 86% in 2020, 83% in 2050, and 81% in 2080. Farmers adopting this adaptation strategy will have higher profits. Land value tends to be higher in both climate scenarios in counties with cultivated areas using transgenic seeds. Farmers adopting this adaptation measure will be less exposed to adverse effects of climate change. We conclude that it is necessary to invest in adaptation strategies so that Brazil can overcome adverse effects of global climate change.

The activity of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase (ACO) was characterized in seeds of the tropical legume Townsville stylo (Stylosanthes humilis) both in vitro (desalted extract of non-dormant seeds) and in vivo (entire dormant seeds). Optimum conditions for maximum in vitro ACO activity in a Trizma-HCl 100 mM buffered medium were: pH 7.0, temperature 32ºC and cofactors and co-substrate at the following concentrations: NaHCO3 30 mM, sodium ascorbate 30 mM and FeSO4 50 µM. Rates of in vitro reaction catalyzed by ACO were shown to be constant within the interval 15-150 minutes from the onset of the reaction. The apparent Km for in vitro ACO, as determined from the non-linear curve fitting to the Michaelis-Menten equation, was 156±8.3 µM ACC with a Vmax 5.4±0.08 mmol (ET) g-1 h-1 on a fresh matter (FM) basis. In vivo (control basal medium: HCl-KOH 10 mM pH 7.0, 30ºC, reaction time 15 hours) apparent Km was 230±27 µM ACC and Vmax 11.9±0.38 mmol (ET) g-1.h-1 on a FM basis. These data suggest that the enzyme exhibits a relatively low affinity for the substrate. The well-known inhibitors of ACO activity, α-aminoisobutyric acid, salicylic and acetylsalicylic acids, n-propylgallate and cobaltous ions, were highly effective in inhibiting ACO activity of Townsville stylo seeds.

Passiflora morifolia, P. suberosa litoralis e P. palmeri var. sublanceolata são espécies silvestres com potencial ornamental, que ocorrem no Brasil. Foram avaliadas com o objetivo de verificar os efeitos de diferentes níveis de sombreamento na germinação e no crescimento inicial de plântulas. O tratamento com 50% de sombreamento apresentou os maiores valores de percentagem de germinação e de índice de velocidade de emergência para as três espécies. Esse tratamento foi o mais indicado para a formação de plântulas de P. morifolia e P. palmeri var. sublanceolata, pois nessa condição elas apresentaram maior crescimento em altura e incremento de biomassa. Por outro lado, P. suberosa litoralis apresentou maior incremento de biomassa a pleno sol e a 25% de sombreamento, com redução a 75% de sombreamento. O incremento da área foliar e da área foliar específica foi devido às alterações na dimensão e na forma das folhas em resposta ao sombreamento. Essas observações demonstram que o crescimento inicial de plântulas reflete o desenvolvimento e a adaptação de plantas adultas à ambientes heterogêneos. Por fim, plântulas de P. morifolia e P. palmeri var. sublanceolata mostraram-se mais adaptadas às condições de sombra moderada ao passo que plântulas de P. suberosa litoralis podem ser cultivadas à pleno sol.

Passiflora morifolia, P. suberosa litoralis, and P. palmeri var. sublanceolata are three wild species with ornamental potential that occur in Brazil. These species were evaluated with the purpose of determining the effects of different shade levels on seedling emergence and initial growth. Treatment with 50% shade resulted in the highest percentage of seedling emergence and the highest emergence speed index for all three species. The 50% shade level was the best condition for growth of P. morifolia and P. palmeri var. sublanceolata seedlings because in this condition, they presented higher growth in relation to control and the other treatments. However, P. suberosa litoralis can be considered a sun species because it grew better in full sunlight and 25% shade, but its growth was stunted at 75% shade. Increased leaf area and specific leaf area were due to changes in leaf dimension and shape in response to an increase in shade levels. These observations related to the initial growth reflect the development and adaptation of adult plants to heterogeneous environmentsenvironments. Therefore, P. morifolia and P. palmeri var. sublanceolata seedlings adapted better to moderate shade conditions, and P. suberosa litoralis seedlings should be cultivated in full sunlight.
