A queima da saia, causada por Rhizoctonia solani AG 1-IB, é uma importante doença da cultura da alface no Brasil, para a qual o controle biológico com Trichoderma não foi desenvolvido até o momento no país. O presente estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de selecionar isolados de Trichoderma para serem usados para o controle da queima da saia em alface. Quarenta e seis isolados de Trichoderma obtidos com iscas contendo micélio do patógeno foram avaliados em experimentos conduzidos in vitro e in vivo, os quais foram realizados em casa de vegetação, em duas fases.Em laboratório os isolados foram avaliados com relação às capacidades de parasitismo e de produção de substâncias metabólicas tóxicas, com capacidade de inibir o crescimento micelial do patógeno. Na primeira fase dos experimentos in vivo, foram avaliados o número e a massa seca de plântulas de alface da cultivar White Boston. Na segunda fase, 12 isolados eficientes na primeira fase e que também apresentaram rápido crescimento e esporulação abundante em laboratório, foram avaliados com relação à sua capacidade de controlar a queima da saia em dois experimentos repetidos, e também tiveram suas espécies identificadas. A maioria dos isolados de Trichoderma spp. (76%) apresentou elevada capacidade de parasitismo e 50% dos isolados produzim metabólitos tóxicos capazes de inibir 60-100% do crescimento micelial de R. solani AG1-1-B. Vinte e quatro isolados promoveram aumento do número e 23 na massa seca de plântulas de alface inoculadas com o patógeno na primeira fase dos experimentos in vivo. Nos dois experimentos da segunda fase dois isolados de T. virens, IBLF 04 e IBLF 50, reduziram a severidade da queima da saia e promoveram o aumento do número e da massa seca das plântulas de alface inoculadas com R. solani AG 1-IB. Esses isolados haviam apresentado elevada capacidade de parasitismo e de produção de substâncias metabólicas tóxicas, indicando que as fases in vitro e in vivo empregadas no presente estudo foram eficientes para a seleção dos antagonistas a serem utilizados para o controle da queima da saia em alface.

Bottom rot, caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG 1-IB, is an important disease affecting lettuce in Brazil, where its biological control with Trichoderma was not developed yet. The present study was carried out with the aim of selecting Trichoderma isolates to be used in the control of lettuce bottom rot. Forty-six Trichoderma isolates, obtained with baits containing mycelia of the pathogen, were evaluated in experiments carried out in vitro and in vivo in a greenhouse in two steps. In the laboratory, the isolates were evaluated for their capabilities of parasitizing and producing toxic metabolic substances that could inhibit the pathogen mycelial growth. In the first step of the in vivo experiments, the number and the dry weight of lettuce seedlings of the cultivar White Boston were evaluated. In the second step, 12 isolates that were efficient in the first step and showed rapid growth and abundant sporulation in the laboratory were tested for their capability of controlling bottom rot in two repeated experiments, and had their species identified. The majority of the isolates of Trichoderma spp. (76%) showed high capacity for parasitism and 50% of them produced toxic metabolites capable of inhibiting 60-100% of R. solani AG1-IB mycelial growth. Twenty-four isolates increased the number and 23 isolates increased the dry weight of lettuce seedlings inoculated with the pathogen in the first step of the in vivo experiments.In both experiments of the second step, two isolates of T. virens, IBLF 04 and IBLF 50, reduced the severity of bottom rot and increased the number and the dry weight of lettuce seedlings inoculated with R. solani AG1-IB. These isolates had shown a high capacity for parasitism and production of toxic metabolic substances, indicating that the in vitro and in vivo steps employed in the present study were efficient in selecting antagonists to be used for the control of lettuce bottom rot.

The effectiveness of composted sewage sludge incorporated into Pinus bark-based substrate with or without biofertilizer, fish hydrolyzate, chitosan and Trichoderma asperellum was evaluated for the control of Fusarium wilt in chrysanthemum. The substrate was obtained from pots containing chrysanthemum plants killed by the pathogen. Half of the substrate was sterilized prior to the incorporation of sewage sludge (0, 10%, 20% and 30% v/v). These substrates were or were not supplemented with the following: biofertilizer, fish hydrolyzate and Trichoderma. The mixtures were transferred to pots, and the chrysanthemum was transplanted. For all treatments, half of the plants were sprayed weekly with chitosan. Assessment of severity was performed on the 8th, 12th, 15th and 20th week after transplanting. In the 12th week, microbiological and chemical analysis of the substrate was performed. The incorporation of composted sewage sludge into the Pinus bark-based substrate significantly reduced Fusarium wilt, which was progressively decreased as the concentration of sewage sludge increased. The addition of biofertilizer, fish hydrolyzate, chitosan and Trichoderma had no effect on the disease. The microbial community was greater in non-disinfested substrates. The results indicate that suppressiveness is related to the interaction of chemical and microbiological factors.

A podridão de raízes, causada por Pythium aphanidermatum e outras espécies de Pythium, é a principal doença da alface cultivada em sistemas hidropônicos no Brasil. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar quatro cultivares comerciais de alface em relação à sensibilidade a podridão de raízes, causada por P. aphanidermatum. Os estudos foram realizados em placas de Petri contendo ágar-água com plântulas de alface das cultivares crespa (Vera e Verônica) e lisa (Regina e Elisa), infestadas ou não com o patógeno. Com as mesmas cultivares foram realizados quatro experimentos em sistemas hidropônicos (Nutrient Film Technique), sendo dois em estufa coberta com plástico e sombrite e dois em estufa coberta apenas com plástico. As plântulas, infectadas ou não com P. aphanidermatum, foram transplantadas para os sistemas infestados ou não. Foi avaliada a severidade da doença e o desenvolvimento das plantas. Todas as cultivares foram suscetíveis à podridão de raízes nos experimentos realizados in vitro e in vivo. A presença do sombrite não reduziu a podridão de raízes em cultivares de alface produzidas no sistema hidropônico. A cultivar Regina apresentou maior massa de matéria seca da parte aérea e das raízes, na presença ou ausência do patógeno, sendo a mais indicada para o cultivo hidropônico na época mais quente do ano.

Lettuce root rot caused by Pythium aphanidermatum and other Pythium species is the main disease in hydroponic systems in Brazil. The present work aimed to evaluate the behavior of four commercial lettuce cultivars as to their sensitivity to root rot caused by P. aphanidermatum in hydroponic systems. Experiments were conducted in Petri dishes containing water-agar medium and seedlings of the crisp head lettuce cultivars (Vera and Verônica) and leafy lettuce cultivars (Regina and Elisa), infested or not with the pathogen. With the same cultivars, four other experiments were carried out in hydroponic systems (Nutrient Film Technique), two in a shaded greenhouse and the other two in a conventional greenhouse. Seedlings infected or not with P. aphanidermatum were transplanted to hydroponic systems infested or not with the pathogen. The disease severity and the plant development were evaluated. All cultivars were susceptible to root rot in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. The shading did not reduce root rot in the lettuce cultivars in hydroponic system. The cultivar Regina showed higher shoot and root dry mass in the presence or absence of the pathogen, constituting thus the most suitable cultivar for hydroponic systems during the hottest period of the year.

O potencial de casca de camarão e hidrolisado de peixe incorporados ao substrato à base de casca de Pinus e da quitosana pulverizada nas plantas foi avaliado para o controle da murcha de Fusarium em crisântemo. A severidade da doença foi avaliada por uma escala de notas de 0 a 5, após 8, 12, 15 e 20 semanas do plantio nos experimentos com casca de camarão e hidrolisado de peixe. No ensaio com quitosana avaliou-se a severidade na 18ª semana após o plantio. O desenvolvimento das plantas e análises químicas e da atividade microbiana dos substratos foram avaliados. A casca de camarão suprimiu a doença e promoveu o crescimento da planta na concentração de 4%, porém na de 5% causou fitotoxicidade. A indução da supressividade pela casca de camarão foi, possivelmente, devido às alterações nas características físico-químicas e biológicas do substrato. Apesar disso, como a concentração ideal para o controle da doença e promoção de crescimento foi próxima da que causou fitotoxicidade, o seu uso deve ser com cautela. O hidrolisado não suprimiu a doença e a severidade foi diretamente proporcional à sua concentração no substrato. A quitosana gerou resultados variáveis, não sendo possível o estabelecimento de uma resposta padrão.

The incorporation of shrimp peelings and fish hydrolyzate into a pine-bark container medium and an aerial spray of chitosan were investigated for the control of Fusarium wilt of chrysanthemum. Disease severity was evaluated by means of a six-category scale (0 - healthy plant to 5 - dead plant) at 8, 12, 15 and 20 weeks after planting in experiments with shrimp peelings and fish hydrolyzate, and after 18 weeks in the chitosan experiment. The total microbial activity of the container media was evaluated (by fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis), physicochemical attributes of the media were assessed, and plant growth components were measured. Incorporation of shrimp peelings into the pine-bark medium at 4% (v/v) suppressed wilt, but at 5% the plants exhibited symptoms of phytotoxicity and died. The suppression of Fusarium wilt was possibly due to physicochemical and biological changes in container medium induced by the shrimp peel. Given that the concentration which was phytotoxic was only slightly higher than the concentration which suppressed wilt and promoted plant growth, caution is needed in any use of shrimp peelings for wilt control. The fish hydrolyzate increased wilt severity as the concentration was increased. No consistent effects were found of chitosan applied to the aerial parts of the plant.

O objetivo desse trabalho foi estudar a eficiência de Aphis gossypii e Myzus persicae na transmissão do vírus do mosaico do pepino (Cucumber mosaic virus, CMV), isoladamente e em mistura com duas espécies de potyvirus (Vírus do mosaico do mamoeiro = Papaya ringspot virus - type W, PRSV-W e Vírus do mosaico amarelo da abobrinha = Zucchini yellow mosaic virus, ZYMV), para planta-testes de abobrinha de moita (Cucurbita pepo). Os dois potyvirus em geral foram transmitidos com mais eficiência pelas duas espécies de afídeos do que o CMV. A transmissão do PRSV-W, ZYMV e CMV, separadamente, foi mais eficiente do que em mistura.

The main objective of this work was to investigate the ability of Aphis gossypii and Myzus persicae to transmit Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) singly and mixed with two potyviruses (Papaya ringspot virus - type W, PRSV-W and Zucchini yellow mosaic virus, ZYMV), to zucchini squash plants (Cucurbita pepo). The results showed that the potyviruses in general were more efficiently transmitted by both species of aphids as compared to CMV. The transmission of PRSV-W, ZYMV and CMV separately was more efficient than in mixture.
