ABSTRACT Hydrosedimentological modeling is a useful tool to predict the water dynamic in a basin and for water resources management. This study aimed to i) evaluate the ability of Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to model sediment load and continuous monthly streamflow in the Mortes River Basin (MRB) in Southeastern Brazil; ii) estimate the sediment yield spatially distributed by sub-basins; iii) estimate the sediment load export to the Funil Hydroelectric Power Plant reservoir (FHPP), located in the MRB outlet. For the sensitivity analysis, calibration, and uncertainty analysis of the model, a semi-automatic calibration in SWAT-CUP version 5.1.6 software with the “Sequential Uncertainty Fitting” algorithm was used. To evaluate the ability of SWAT to reproduce the continuous MRB monthly streamflow and sediment load, statistical indexes, and graphical analyses were used to compare the simulated and observed data. For the sediment evaluation, a spatial and temporal comparison of sediment yield maps was used as well as the sediment yield observed in sub-basins, aiming to identify the areas with a more significant contribution to the sediment generation in the basin. The results demonstrated that SWAT performed satisfactorily in simulating both monthly sediment load and streamflow. For discharge calibration, 99 % of the measured data were bracketed by the 95 % prediction uncertainty (95PPU), and for validation, 97 % of the data were bracketed by the 95PPU, which indicates proper bracketing of the measured data within model prediction uncertainty. Uncertainty analysis indicated that 95PPU could capture 78 % of the sediment loads measured during the calibration and 72 % of the measured data during the validation period at MRB. The hydrologic response unit with pasture and Argissolos (Ultisols), Neossolos Litólicos (Entisols), and Cambissolos (Inceptisols) combined with undulated relief were the main areas responsible for the highest sediment contributions. The sediment load delivered to the reservoir from its filling 2002 to 2015 was estimated in 6,682,704 m3 (16,706,761 Mg) (density of 2.5-Mg m-3) which value corresponded to 2.6 % of storage capacity (water plus sediment) in 14 years. These results are strategic since to become feasible identifying priority areas for soil and water conservation practices as well as useful information for water resources planning and management in the studied basin.

RESUMO A Bacia do Alto Grande (ARG) é responsável pela drenagem de vários rios no sudeste do Brasil, sendo uma região hidrológica de grande importância para o Sistema Elétrico Brasileiro. Portanto, estudos sobre a disponibilidade de água nesta região são indispensáveis para uma melhor tomada de decisão na gestão dos recursos hídricos. O objetivo deste estudo é abordar a influência do uso da terra nas propriedades hidrológicas do solo na ARG, uma bacia de cabeceira estratégica do sudeste do Brasil. Para apoiar os resultados encontrados, este estudo utiliza indicadores hidrológicos (Fluxo de base/escoamento superficial (FB/ES) e Fluxo superficial/escoamento superficial (FS/ES)) extraídos de oito bacias hidrográficas. A condutividade hidráulica (Ko) foi determinada in situ usando um permeâmetro de fluxo constante, totalizando 224 pontos amostrados. Cinco algoritmos de aprendizado de máquina foram comparados em seu desempenho para prever a Ko (Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, Gradient Boosting, Linear Regression, Regularization) usando atributos de terreno como covariáveis. A validação adicional das relações de uso da terra e propriedades hidrológicas na ARG foi realizada com base em indicadores desenvolvidos com base nas séries pluviométricas e fluviométricas de longo prazo, de oito bacias hidrográficas dentro da ARG. Os métodos testados para prever a Ko resultaram em um R2 relativamente baixo devido à alta variabilidade espacial deste atributo hidrológico do solo. O indicador hidrológico FB/ES foi sensível às mudanças no uso da terra nas bacias hidrográficas. Os maiores valores de Ko estão associados à floresta nativa e os menores valores às áreas de pastagem e campo rupestre.

ABSTRACT Brazil is a large country that depends on the hydroelectricity generation hydropower dams. The Upper Grande River Basin (UGRB) is one of the most important Brazilian hydrological regions in terms of water availability and electric energy production. Therefore, studies of water availability are indispensable for a better and more successful decision making in water resources management in the region. This study objective to approach the land-use influence on the soil hydrology in the Upper Grande River Basin, a strategic headwater basin of southeastern Brazil. This study uses hydrological indicators (baseflow/runoff (BF/R) and overland flow/runoff (OF/R)) extracted from eight watersheds, varying the size and localization in the region, to support the results found. Soil saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ko) was determined in situ using a constant flow permeameter, totaling 224 sampled points. Five machine learning algorithms were compared in their performance to predict Ko (Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, Gradient Boosting, Linear Regression, Regularization) using terrain attributes as covariates. The tested methods for predicting Ko resulted in a relatively low coefficient of determination (R2) due to the high spatial variability of this soil hydrologic attribute. The hydrological indicator BF/R was sensitive to land-use changes in the watersheds. The greatest Ko values were associated with native forest and the least values area associated with pasture and rupestrian field.

ABSTRACT: The Mantiqueira Range region is one of the most important headwaters in southeastern Brazil. In this context, the relationship between pedology and hydrology has been debated and analyzed in recent years, contributing to the creation of a multidisciplinary science call hydropedology. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the hydropedological properties of a mountainous Clayey Humic Dystrudept in the Mantiqueira Range region, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, comparing two land-uses, native forest and pasture. The hydraulic conductivity results demonstrated that native forest (MFO) has a strong influence on this parameter, offering conditions for movement of water in the soil that are more adequate in this profile than in pasture. These results were supported by pore size distribution analyses which showed that soil from native forest has a greater amount of macropores than soil from pasture as well as greater connectivity between the macropores. In general, the MFO site had greater S index values than the micro-catchment taken from pasture, offering favorable physical conditions for the formation of preferential flowpaths in the soil profile and, therefore, better conditions for groundwater recharge. Soil erosion and water quality results confirmed the importance of native forest areas in the interaction between interception of the direct impact of intense precipitation on the soil surface, and hydropedological attributes, such as saturated hydraulic conductivity and porosity.

Resumo O conhecimento da disponibilidade hídrica é básico para a gestão e planejamento dos recursos hídricos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi interpretar as unidades de mapeamento de solos do estado de Minas Gerais sob a ótica dos grupos hidrológicos conforme método do Número da Curva (Curve Number - Soil Conservation Service). Para avaliar os produtos gerados, aplicou-se o procedimento em três ambientes fisiográficos distintos do estado. De acordo com os resultados, a maior parte do estado de Minas Gerais se enquadra nos Grupos Hidrológicos A e B, indicando que os solos nestas áreas apresentam baixo escoamento superficial e alta taxa de infiltração de água. A caracterização e espacialização do regime hidrológico, com ênfase na informação sobre os solos do Estado de Minas Gerais, aplicados neste estudo, tem um nível de detalhe ainda não empregado em estudos deste escopo, além da iniciativa de interpretá-los na perspectiva de grupos hidrológicos do solo. O mapeamento das três unidades de planejamento e gestão de recursos hídricos, compostas por ambientes distintos, na perspectiva dos grupos hidrológicos, permitiu verificar a potencialidade da metodologia proposta, que pode ser utilizada para subsidiar a gestão e o planejamento dos recursos hídricos do Estado de Minas Gerais. Estudos sobre interpretações de mapas de solo do ponto de vista hidrológico são essenciais para melhorar a nossa compreensão sobre os excedentes de água em determinada região.

Abstract The knowledge of water availability is the basis for water resource planning and management. The Soil Map Units of the State of Minas Gerais were interpreted from the perspective of Hydrologic Groups based on the Curve Number - Soil Conservation Service method, with the addition of pedological elements of the mapped units. The generated products were used in three different physiographic environments of the Minas Gerais State. According to results, most of Minas Gerais falls within Hydrologic Groups A and B, indicating that the soils in these areas present low surface runoff and high water infiltration rates. The characterization and spatialization of the hydrological regime, with emphasis on information about the soils of Minas Gerais, as applied this study, has a level of detail not yet employed in studies of this scope, apart from the initiative to interpret them from the perspective of soil hydrological groups. The mapping of the three water resources planning and management units, composed of distinct environments, from the perspective of hydrological groups, allowed verification of the proposed methodology’s potential, which can be used to support the management and planning of the water resources of Minas Gerais. Interpretive studies of soil maps from a hydrological perspective are essential to improve our understanding of water surpluses in a given region.

RESUMO No Brasil, a Serra da Mantiqueira, abriga um dos últimos remanescentes da Floresta Tropical de Altitude. Devido a grande exploração que vem ocorrendo neste bioma há décadas, a influência na hidropedologia decorrente das mudanças do uso do solo deve ser investigada. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência do uso do solo na porosidade drenável do solo (PDS) em uma bacia hidrográfica localizada na região da Serra da Mantiqueira e validar os métodos propostos com base em indicadores micromorfológicos e hidrológicos. A vegetação nativa da área de estudo é a Mata Atlântica que ocupa 62% da área, e com os 38% restantes utilizados para pastagem. Trinta e nove combinações de variáveis ambientais foram testadas, cada uma gerando um mapa para predizer a PDS. O desempenho da predição espacial da PDS foi avaliado utilizando 20% dos dados do número total de amostras coletadas em toda a bacia hidrográfica. Os menores valores de PDS são devidos ao processo de remoção de floresta nativa e substituição por pastagem. Áreas com altos a moderados valores de PDS estão associadas a fragmentos de florestas nativas que demonstram os efeitos da Mata Atlântica nos processos de infiltração de água e de recarga de água subterrânea na região da Mantiqueira, dada a maior contribuição do fluxo base em áreas florestadas. A análise micromorfológica do solo forneceu informações úteis sobre o sistema poroso do solo e as propriedades hidrológicas da bacia hidrográfica, ajudando a entender o comportamento da PDS e a capacidade de armazenamento em subsuperfícíe.

ABSTRACT In Brazil, the Mantiqueira Range, southeastern region, shelters the last remnants of the ecologically important Upper Montane Tropical Forest. since extensive exploration that has been taking place in this biome for decades, the influence of land-use changes on hydropedology in these areas must be investigated once major land-use changes have been observed. This study aims to evaluate the land-use influence on soil drainable porosity (SDP) in a headwater watershed located in the Mantiqueira Range region, and to validate the proposed methods based on micromorphological and hydrological indicators. The native vegetation of the study area is Atlantic forest that occupies 62% of the area, and the remaining 38% has been used for pasture. Thirty nine combinations of environmental variables were tested, each one generating a map for predicting SDP. The performance of the spatial prediction of SDP was assessed using 20% of the data from the total number of samples collected throughout the watershed. The least values of SDP are due to the process of removal of native forest and replacement by pasture. Areas with high to moderate SDP are associated with native forest fragments demonstrating the effects of the Atlantic Forest on the water infiltration and groundwater recharge processes, given by the greater contribution of baseflow in a forested catchment located within the studied watershed. The analysis of soil micromorphological images provided useful supporting information on the soil porosity system and along with hydrological properties of the watershed helped understand the SDP behavior on subsurface and groundwater storage capacity.

RESUMO Modelos têm sido usados pelo homem há milhares de anos para controlar seu ambiente de uma maneira favorável para melhores condições de vida para os humanos. O uso de modelos hidrológicos tem sido uma ferramenta muito eficaz para apoiar os decisores que lidam com as bacias hidrográficas para subsidiar diversas atividades econômicas e sociais, como o abastecimento público de água, geração de energia, e a disponibilidade de água para a agricultura, entre outros. Objetivou-se, nesta revisão, discutir brevemente alguns modelos muito aplicados ao estudo do movimento da água e solos em paisagens (RUSLE, WEPP, GeoWEPP, LASH, DHSVM and AnnAGNPS), para fornecer informações sobre os mesmos, para auxiliar no entendimento adequado de problemas específicos relacionados com os processos de hidrologia e erosão do solo. Modelos têm sido alterados e avaliados de forma significativa nos últimos anos, com destaque para o uso de sensoriamento remoto, GIS e processo de calibração automática, permitindo aos mesmos que sejam capazes de simular bacias hidrográficas nas suas condições atuais de uso do solo e mudanças climáticas. No entanto, os modelos hidrológicos têm quase a mesma estrutura física, o que não é suficiente para simular problemas relacionados com os efeitos a longo prazo de diferentes usos do solo. Esse tem sido um dos principais desafios para o futuro: compreender inteiramente o ciclo hidrológico, tendo como referência a zona crítica, na qual os processos hidrológicos agem em conjunto a partir do dossel até a base dos aquíferos.

ABSTRACT Models have been used by man for thousands of years to control his environment in a favorable way to better human living conditions. The use of hydrologic models has been a widely effective tool in order to support decision makers dealing with watersheds related to several economic and social activities, like public water supply, energy generation, and water availability for agriculture, among others. The purpose of this review is to briefly discuss some models on soil and water movement on landscapes (RUSLE, WEPP, GeoWEPP, LASH, DHSVM and AnnAGNPS) to provide information about them to help and serve in a proper manner in order to discuss particular problems related to hydrology and soil erosion processes. Models have been changed and evaluated significantly in recent years, highlighting the use of remote sense, GIS and automatic calibration process, allowing them capable of simulating watersheds under a given land-use and climate change effects. However, hydrology models have almost the same physical structure, which is not enough for simulating problems related to the long-term effects of different land-uses. That has been our challenge for next future: to understand entirely the hydrology cycle, having as reference the critical zone, in which the hydrological processes act together from canopy to the bottom of aquifers.

RESUMOHá a necessidade de se compreender os processos de formação do solo em diferentes paisagens para prever como as propriedades do solo irão responder às mudanças no uso do solo. Neste estudo, objetivou-se caracterizar Cambissolos em uma região montanhosa sob clima subtropical de altitude no Sudeste do Brasil, por meio de análises físicas, químicas e micromorfológicas do solo, sob mata nativa e pastagem. O solo sob pastagem apresentou maior densidade do solo do que sob mata, expressa pela intensa redução de macroporosidade na primeira condição. Em ambas as profundidades, os grãos de quartzo grosseiros são angulares, sugerindo ausência de quaisquer processos de transporte, confirmando, assim, uma pedogênese autóctone, a partir da rocha gnáissica subjacente. A maioria dos feldspatos se encontra intemperizada e não mais identificável, mas a alteração mineral é comumente vista ao longo de planos de clivagem e bordas de micas. Os resultados micromorfólogicos sugerem um estágio intermediário de intemperismo mineral e desenvolvimento do solo, o que está de acordo com as propriedades esperadas em Cambissolos.

ABSTRACTUnderstanding soil formation processes across different landscapes is needed to predict how soil properties will respond to land use change. This study aimed to characterize mountainous Inceptisols (Cambisols) under high altitude subtropical climate in southeastern Brazil, by soil physical, chemical and micromorphological analyses, under native forest and pasture. The soil under pasture had a greater bulk density than under forest, resulting in a severe reduction of macroporosity. At two depths, coarse quartz grains are angular, suggesting absence of transportational processes, thus confirming an autochthonous pedogenesis from the underlying gneissic rock. Most feldspars were weathered beyond recognition, but mineral alteration was commonly seen across cleavage plans and edges of micas. The micromorphological results suggest an intermediate stage of mineral weathering and soil development, which is in accordance with properties expected to be found in Inceptisols.

A análise do comportamento da precipitação e sua interação nas diferentes etapas do ciclo hidrológico em bacias hidrográficas florestadas são essenciais para a determinação do balanço hídrico, devido à sua relevante participação nos processos hidrológicos e à sua variação espaço-temporal em função de fatores edáficos, topográficos, climáticos e de vegetação. Devido à heterogeneidade da Mata Atlântica, aliada à variabilidade espaço-temporal da precipitação, tornam-se fundamentais mecanismos que permitam a descrição, bem como a interligação dos componentes do balanço hídrico nesse ambiente. Nesse contexto, este estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de analisar a partição da precipitação pluvial em uma microbacia hidrográfica inteiramente ocupada por um remanescente de Mata Atlântica, durante os anos hidrológicos de 2009-2010 e de 2010-2011, correlacionando-a com a evolução sazonal dos ecossistemas, identificada pela aplicação das diferenças dos índices de vegetação por diferença normalizada (IVDN). Observou-se maior percentual de precipitação interna em períodos com menores precipitações. Constatou-se também maior capacidade de armazenamento de água do dossel vegetativo da Mata Atlântica no período chuvoso. Ainda, foi verificada correlação entre a capacidade de armazenamento de água do dossel da Mata Atlântica e a regeneração vegetal sinalizada pelo IVDN, podendo-se associar este comportamento aos processos responsáveis pelo desenvolvimento da Mata Atlântica.

The analyze of pluvial precipitation and its interaction on the different hydrologic cycle phases in forested watersheds are essential in order to water balance characterization due to its relevant participation in the hydrological processes and to its spatial-temporal variability as function of edaphic, topographic, climatic and vegetation elements. Due to heterogeneity of Atlantic Forest associated to temporal and spatial variability of pluvial precipitation regime, the study of mechanisms that allow describing and linking the hydrological cycle elements are very important. This way, the objective of this study was to analyze the partitioning of pluvial precipitation at a micro-catchment entirely occupied by Atlantic Forest remnant, in Mantiqueira Range, during 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 hydrological years, relating it with the seasonal evolution of this ecosystem which was monitored by the application of normalized difference vegetation indexes (NDVI). It was observed greater percentage of internal pluvial precipitation during the periods with less rainfall. It was also verified greater water storage capacity of the Atlantic Forest's canopy throughout rainy season. Yet, a plausible correlation was obtained between water storage capacity of Atlantic Forest and the regeneration of vegetation demonstrated by NDVI what can be associated to the processes responsible for Atlantic Forest's growth.

A determinação e o estudo de precipitação provável e vazão máxima diária anual em uma bacia hidrográfica é uma ferramenta que ajuda a dimensionar seguramente obras hidráulicas. Neste sentido, os objetivos deste estudo foram a comparação e adequação estatística de modelos de distribuição de probabilidades aplicados ao estudo da precipitação provável e à vazão do Rio Aiuruoca, determinando-se qual modelo de probabilidade é mais adequado para a caracterização dos dados pluviométricos e fluviométricos da bacia de Aiuruoca, Minas Gerais. O estudo revela que a distribuição de probabilidade Log-Normal dois parâmetros foi a que melhor se ajustou às séries históricas de precipitação mensal. Por exemplo, no mês de janeiro é esperada a lâmina acumulada de chuvas de 201 mm, com 75% de probabilidade de ocorrência. Este é o mês com maior volume pluviométrico da região. Por outro lado, a série de vazões do Rio Aiuruoca foi melhor ajustada pela distribuição Log-Normal de três parâmetros.

Research on rainfall and annual daily maximum discharge rates is essential to support decisions during the design of hydraulic structures. This study tested the adequacy of probability functions to predict the probable rainfall and discharge rates of the Aiuruoca River Basin in Minas Gerais State in Brazil. This basin is very important as starting point of the Rio Grande Basin that eventually discharges into the Parana River in the southern region of Brazil at the border with Argentina. It was found that the log-normal two parameters probability function provided the best fit to historical monthly rainfall series. For example, in the month of January, there is a 75% probability that 201 mm of rainfall will occur. This is the month with the highest volume of rainfall in the region. On another hand, for flow rate, the best fit was provided by the log-normal distribution with three parameters.

A manutenção da qualidade dos recursos hídricos é de suma importância para a preservação ambiental e qualidade de vida dos usuários, sendo hoje, um dos grandes desafios da humanidade. O uso do solo pelas atividades agropecuárias altera sensivelmente os processos biológicos, físicos e químicos dos sistemas naturais. Neste estudo, foram monitoradas duas sub-bacias localizadas na Serra da Mantiqueira, onde foram coletadas amostras de água para análise entre junho de 2010 e maio de 2011, com periodicidade mensal. As duas sub-bacias apresentam distintas coberturas vegetais, sendo uma predominantemente sob pastagem e outra inteiramente sob Mata Atlântica. Foram analisados os seguintes indicadores associados à qualidade de água: turbidez, pH, condutividade elétrica, sólidos dissolvidos totais, oxigênio dissolvido, temperatura, nitrato, fosfato, DBO, DQO, coliformes totais e fecais e a vazão dos cursos d'água. Os resultados das análises mostraram que a degradação da qualidade da água em ambos os ambientes monitorados, coincidiu com o período chuvoso na região, influenciada pelo transporte de material orgânico aos cursos d'água, pelo escoamento superficial direto. As elevadas concentrações de coliformes fecais afetaram a qualidade dos cursos d'água, principalmente no período chuvoso e estão associadas à agropecuária, principal atividade econômica exercida na região. No entanto, o ambiente sob Mata Atlântica apresentou, estatisticamente, uma melhor qualidade de água ao longo do tempo em relação ao ambiente sob pastagem, devido à maior proteção que a mesma exerce ao escoamento superficial.

Maintaining the quality of water resources is of great importance for environmental preservation and the quality of life of consumers, and is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity today. Land-use for agriculture and animal farming significantly changes the biological, physical and chemical characteristics of natural systems. This study comprised monitoring of two subbasins located in the Mantiqueira Range region, from which water samples were collected on a monthly basis between June 2010 and May 2011 for analysis. Each subbasin has a distinct vegetation cover, one being predominantly covered by pastureland and the other being entirely covered by Atlantic Forest. The following water quality indicators were analyzed: turbidity, pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, temperature, nitrate, phosphate, BOD,COD, total and fecal coliforms, and respective discharge measurement. The results showed that water quality degradation in both environments coincided with the local rainy season and was influenced by transport of organic material to watercourses by direct surface runoff. The high concentrations of fecal coliforms found affected the water quality, particularly in the rainy season, and are associated with agriculture and animal farming, the main economic activities in the region. The Atlantic Forest environment, however, had statistically better water quality over time in relation to the pastureland environment, due to the buffering it provides to direct surface runoff.

A utilização de um grande número de indicadores de qualidade de água torna oneroso o monitoramento dos corpos hídricos a longo tempo. Nesse sentido, a Análise de Componentes Principais (ACP) pode ser considerada como uma técnica promissora de grande auxílio na gestão dos recursos hídricos, pois permite diminuir a dimensionalidade dos dados, facilitando a sua análise. Neste estudo, objetivou-se obter um índice de qualidade de água (IQA) para a região das nascentes do Rio Grande, na Serra da Mantiqueira, Minas Gerais. Na composição do IQA, foi realizada a normalização dos resultados de indicadores de qualidade de água advindos de uma sub-bacia sob a Mata Atlântica e outra predominantemente sob pastagem. Esses valores normalizados foram submetidos a uma ACP e, posteriormente, foi efetuado o cálculo do IQA. Os indicadores com maiores pesos, segundo a ACP, foram o coliforme total, nitrato, coliforme termotolerante, demanda química de oxigênio e temperatura. A sub-bacia sob Mata Atlântica apresentou os melhores resultados de IQA, denotando a importância desse tipo de ambiente na manutenção da qualidade da água dos mananciais na região da Serra da Mantiqueira.

The use of a large number of water quality indicators increases the costs of streamflow monitoring throughout the time. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) can be considered a promised tool for water resources management, allowing a reduction in the dimensionality of the data and facilitating their analyses. This study aimed to obtain a water quality index (WQI) to characterize the Mantiqueira Range region. Water quality indicators from a sub-basin entirely occupied by Atlantic Forest and from another predominantly occupied by pasture were normalized and used to compose the WQI. The normalized values were submitted to a PCA evaluation and the WQI was then calculated. The Indicators with greatest weight, according to the PCA, were total coliform, nitrate, fecal coliform, chemical oxygen demand and temperature. The Atlantic forest sub-basin presented the best WQI results, demonstrating the importance of the forested environment in the maintenance of water quality in springs of the Mantiqueira Range region.
