ABSTRACT Canola has considerable global significance in edible oil and biodiesel production. In Brazil, canola has adapted to the temperate South region, where production is now concentrated. However, research indicates potential for growing the crop in warmer regions. This study evaluated the performance of canola hybrids under growing conditions in the Campo das Vertentes mesoregion, Minas Gerais, during the 2019 and 2021 harvests. The experiments were conducted in a randomized block 6 × 6 factorial design, with four replicates. Six canola hybrids, Hyola 433, Hyola 575 CL, Nuola 300, Hyola 571 CL, Diamond, and ALHT B4, and six sowing dates: 02/15/2019, 02/28/2019, 03/20/2019, 04/09/2019, 02/22/2021, and 03/11/2021 were tested. The plant height, total number of siliques per plant, number of grains per silique, grain yield, and canola oil yield were evaluated. The Nuola 300 and Hyola 575 CL hybrids showed superior grain and oil yields, indicating potential success in growing in the Brazilian Cerrado region. Findings indicated an optimal sowing period in the Campo das Vertentes region until March. These results stress the importance of strategically selecting hybrids and sowing timelines to maximize canola yield in the region under study. RESUMO Há evidências de que as taxas de acúmulo de massa seca e nutrientes das cultivares mais precoces (determinadas) são mais rápidas do que aquelas de ciclo normal ou tardio (indeterminado). Objetivou-se quantificar a extração e exportação de nutrientes e o índice de colheita de cultivares de feijão-comum determinadas e indeterminadas. Utilizou-se delineamento em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições e oito cultivares (BRS FC104, TAA Gol, BRS Estilo, BRSMG Uai, IPR Tuiuiú, BRSMG Marte, Pérola e TAA Dama). Foram determinados o acúmulo de massa seca e de nutrientes nos estádios vegetativo e reprodutivo, produtividade e exportação de nutrientes. No início do estádio vegetativo, as cultivares precoces TAA Gol e BRS FC104 (tipo I - determinadas) apresentaram maior acúmulo de massa seca e nutrientes do que as indeterminadas tipos II e III. No entanto, a partir de R7, não houve diferenças entre as cultivares nas extrações, bem como nas exportações de nutrientes e no índice de colheita. Foram exportados 33; 11; 17; 2,3; 2,2; e 1,5 kg t-1 de grão de N, P2O5, K2O, S, Mg e Ca, respectivamente. No caso dos micronutrients, foram 14; 3,7; 70; 13; e 34 g Mg-1 de grão de B, Cu, Fe, Mn e Zn. ABSTRACT There is evidence that the dry mass and nutrient accumulation rates of earlier (determinate) cultivars are faster than those of normal or late cycle (indeterminate). This study aimed to quantify the nutrient extraction and export and calculate the harvest index of determinate and indeterminate common bean cultivars. A randomized block design was used, with four replicates and eight cultivars (BRS FC104, TAA Gol, BRS Estilo, BRSMG Uai, IPR Tuiuiú, BRSMG Marte, Pérola and TAA Dama). The accumulation of dry matter and nutrients at the vegetative and reproductive stages, grain yield and grain nutrient export were determined. The early cultivars TAA Gol and BRS FC104 (Type I - determinate) accumulated more dry matter and nutrients during the vegetative stage than the indeterminate types II and III. However, from R7, no differences were observed among the cultivars for extractions or nutrient exports and harvest index. The cultivars exported 33, 11, 17, 2.3, 2.2 and 1.5 kg t-1 of grain for N, P2O5, K2O, S, Mg and Ca, respectively. RESUMO: Objetivou-se mensurar o efeito da associação entre caracteres agronômicos relacionados à produtividade de grãos de canola cultivada em diferentes épocas de semeadura, através da análise de trilha. Assim como também objetivou-se obter um método para predizer o teor de óleo nos grãos, ajustando um modelo multivariado através da análise por espectroscopia na região do infravermelho próximo. O experimento foi conduzido em campo, utilizando-se o delineamento de blocos ao acaso, em parcelas subdivididas no tempo, sendo quatro parcelas (épocas de semeadura) e seis subparcelas (híbridos de canola), com quatro repetições. Em cada híbrido foram realizadas observações fenológicas e determinada a produtividade de grãos. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância em ambiente R pelo teste F, a cinco de probabilidade. O teor de óleo nos grãos foi determinado pelo método químico tradicional, e com base na assinatura espectral no infravermelho próximo de amostras dos grãos foi estabelecida regressão dos mínimos quadrados parciais (PLS-R) para estimar o teor de óleo nos grãos de canola. As épocas de semeadura influenciaram os componentes de produção e o teor de óleo dos grãos de todos híbridos. Os caracteres número de grãos em cinco plantas (0,6857) e altura (0,4943) apresentaram maiores estimativas de correlação positiva com a produtividade de grãos, assim como os maiores valores de efeito direto positivo sobre a produtividade, 0,2494 e 0,1595 respectivamente. Entretanto, o ciclo total (-0,7848), juntamente com dias em florescimento (-0,4520) apresentou correlação significativa negativa com a produtividade. A técnica NIR associada à PLS-R foi capaz de predizer o teor de óleo nos grãos, resultando em bons modelos preditivos (R2 de 0,86 e RMSE de 1,56 na validação externa) que podem ser usados com sucesso na análise da qualidade das amostras após colheita e nos programas de melhoramento genético.

ABSTRACT: This study measured the effect of the association between agronomic traits related to the yield of canola grains grown at different sowing dates through path analysis. Another objective was to obtain a method to predict the oil content in the grains, fitting a multivariate model through near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy analysis. The experiment was conducted in the field using a randomized block design in plots subdivided by time, with four plots (sowing dates), six subplots (canola hybrids), and four replicates. In each hybrid, phenological observations were performed, and the grain yield was determined. The data were subjected to analysis of variance in the R environment using the F test at 5% probability. The oil content in the grains was determined by the traditional chemical method, and based on the NIR spectral signature of the grain samples, partial least squares regression (PLS-R) was established to estimate the oil content in the canola grains. The sowing dates influenced the production components and oil content of the grains of all hybrids. The trait number of grains in five plants (0.6857) and their height (0.4943) had greater estimates of positive correlations with grain yield, as well as higher values of positive direct effects on yield (0.2494 and 0.1595, respectively). The NIR technique combined with PLS-R was able to predict the oil content in the grains, resulting in good predictive models (R2 of 0.86 and root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.56 in external validation).

RESUMO A cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum spp.) é uma cultura importante devido à produção de açúcar, etanol e bioenergia. Seu cultivo ocorre em regiões tropicais, sendo muitas vezes exposta a alta salinidade. O objetivo foi identificar cultivares tolerantes à salinidade para permitir o cultivo da cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum spp.) em solos salinos. Para testar a hipótese de que a cana-de-açúcar apresenta variação genotípica natural para tolerância à salinidade, testamos dez cultivares (SP80-3280, RB855453 RB966928, RB855156, SP80-1842, SP80-1816, RB928064, RB867515, RB92579, RB855536) e duas espécies de cana-de-açúcar: IM76-228 (S. robustum) e IN84-82 (S. spontaneum) sob duas concentrações de sódio: controle [concentração encontrada naturalmente no solo utilizado: condutividade elétrica de 0,083 dS m-1] e solo enriquecido com NaCl: CE de 7,2 dS m-1. Características de biometria e fotossíntese foram avaliadas. As plantas foram coletadas, separadas em folha (MSF), caule (MSC), raiz para determinação da matéria seca total da planta e assim estimar o índice de tolerância (IT). Uma análise de cluster foi feita para identificar a dissimilaridade fenotípica. Três grupos distintos em relação à tolerância à salinidade com base na biomassa foram formados. As cultivares RB855156, SP80-1842, SP80-1816 e espécies IM76-228 não apresentaram redução em MSF e MSC. No entanto, as cultivares SP80-3280, RB928064, RB92579 e as espécies IN84-82 foram prejudicadas pela salinidade. O genótipo SP80-1816 apresentou o maior acúmulo de biomassa e o maior IT. Portanto, encontramos uma grande variação genotípica quanto à tolerância à salinidade em cana-de-açúcar, que pode ser explorada pelos produtores para cultivo em solos salinos. Também podem ser utilizadas pelos Programas de Melhoramento da Cana-de-Açúcar para melhorar a tolerância à salinidade.

ABSTRACT Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is an important crop due to sugar, ethanol and bioenergy production. Its cultivation may occur in tropical regions exposed to high salinity. The aim was to identify cultivars tolerant to salinity to allow the cultivation of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) in saline soils. To test the hypothesis that sugarcane show natural genotypic variation to salinity tolerance, we tested ten cultivars (SP80-3280, RB855453 RB966928, RB855156, SP80-1842, SP80-1816, RB928064, RB867515, RB92579, RB855536) and two sugarcane species: IM76-228 (S. robustum) and IN84-82 (S. spontaneum) under two concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl): control (concentration found naturally in the soil used: electrical conductivity of 0.083 dS m-1) and soil enriched with NaCl: EC of 7.2 dS m-1. Biometry and photosynthesis traits were evaluated. The plants were collected and leaf (LDM), stem (SDM), root and total dry matter were used to estimate the tolerance index (TI). A cluster analysis was done to identify phenotypic dissimilarity. Three distinct groups regarding salinity tolerance on biomass-basis were formed. The cultivars RB855156, SP80-1842, SP80-1816 and species IM76-228 showed no reduction in LDM and SDM. Nonetheless, the cultivars SP80-3280, RB928064, RB92579 and species IN84-82 were impaired by salinity. The cultivar SP80-1816 showed the highest biomass accumulation and the highest TI. Therefore, we found a great genotypic variation regarding salinity tolerance in sugarcane, which can be explored by growers to cultivate in saline soils. Also can be used by the Sugarcane Breeding Programs to improve the salinity tolerance.

RESUMO Clorofilômetros portáteis podem ser utilizados para melhorar a previsão de doses de nitrogênio (N) em feijoeiro. Objetivou-se avaliar dois clorofilômetros (Minolta SPAD-502 e ClorofiLOG CFL 1030) para predizer doses de N em cobertura para as cultivares Pérola, TAA Gol, BRSMG Uai e para a linhagem VR 20. Oito experimentos de campo (quatro genótipos e dois dispositivos) foram conduzidos em delineamento de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, cujos tratamentos consistiram na aplicação de N em cobertura correspondendo a quatro índices de suficiência de nitrogênio. Houve discrepâncias entre os índices obtidos pelos diferentes dispositivos para o mesmo genótipo, bem como entre os obtidos com o mesmo dispositivo para os diferentes genótipos estudados. Assim, quando o índice é utilizado para definir as doses de N, deve-se considerar o genótipo e o clorofilômetro utilizado. Além disso, o índice recomendado de 95 % não deve ser generalizado para todas as cultivares e deve ser reduzido.

ABSTRACT Portable chlorophyll meters can be used to improve the prediction of nitrogen (N) doses for common bean. This study aimed to evaluate two chlorophyll meters (Minolta SPAD-502 and ClorofiLOG CFL 1030) to predict topdressing N doses for the Pérola, TAA Gol and BRSMG Uai cultivars and for the VR 20 line. Eight field experiments (four genotypes and two devices) were carried out in a randomized blocks design, with four replicates, being the treatments topdressing N applications corresponding to four nitrogen sufficiency indices. There were discrepancies between the indices obtained by the different devices for the same genotype, as well as among those obtained with the same device for the different genotypes studied. Thus, when the index is used to define the N doses, the genotype and the chlorophyll meter used must be considered. In addition, the recommended index of 95 % should not be generalized to all the cultivars and should be reduced.

RESUMO As atuais recomendações de doses de nitrogênio (N) podem não contemplar a dinâmica complexa do N no solo, o que pode implicar em insuficiência à demanda da cultura. Objetivou-se avaliar o uso de dois medidores portáteis de clorofila (Minolta SPAD 502 e ClorofiLOG modelo CFL 1030), após a definição do índice de suficiência de nitrogênio (ISN), para estimar o fator de adubação nitrogenada em genótipos modernos de feijão. Utilizou-se delineamento em blocos, com 4 repetições. Cada experimento foi composto por quatro tratamentos, com doses de 0; 5; 10; e 20 kg ha-1 de N para cada 1 % considerado abaixo do ISN definido como adequado para cada cultivar. Ao final do ciclo, foram avaliados os componentes de produção e a produtividade. Não foi possível a obtenção de ajustes precisos na metodologia para a cultivar TAA Gol. O fator de adubação de 12,5 kg ha-1 de N a cada 1 % abaixo do ISN de 90 % mostrou-se eficiente para a cultivar Pérola, quando utilizado o clorofilômetro SPAD-502. Em genótipos com características de porte e ciclo semelhantes às da cultivar BRSMG Uai e linhagem VR 20, com a utilização de fator de adubação entre 14 e 16 kg ha-1 de N, o ISN de 95 % deve ser reduzido, visando aumentar a eficiência da adubação nitrogenada.

ABSTRACT The current recommendations for nitrogen (N) doses may not contemplate the complex dynamics of N in the soil, what may imply in insufficiency to the crop demand. This study aimed to evaluate the use of two portable chlorophyll meters (Minolta SPAD 502 and ClorofiLOG model CFL 1030), after defining the nitrogen sufficiency index (NSI), to estimate the nitrogen fertilization factor in modern bean genotypes. A block design was used, with four replications. Each experiment consisted of four treatments, with doses of 0, 5, 10 and 20 kg ha-1 of N for each 1 % considered below the NSI defined as adequate for each cultivar. At the end of the cycle, the production components and yield were evaluated. It was not possible to obtain precise adjustments in the methodology for the TAA Gol cultivar. The fertilization factor of 12.5 kg ha-1 of N for each 1 % below the NSI of 90 % proved to be efficient for the Pérola cultivar, when the SPAD-502 chlorophyll meter was used. In genotypes with size and cycle characteristics similar to those of the BRSMG Uai cultivar and the VR 20 strain, using a fertilization factor between 14 and 16 kg ha-1 of N, the NSI of 95 % must be reduced, in order to increase the efficiency of the nitrogen fertilization.

RESUMO: A avaliação do crescimento dos colmos de cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum spp.) ajuda a adequar o manejo com as fases fenológicas da cultura. Objetivou-se com este trabalho descrever a curva de crescimento da altura de quatro variedades de cana-de-açúcar (RB92579, RB93509, RB931530 e SP79-1011), nos cultivos de cana planta e cana soca irrigados, utilizando os modelos não lineares Logístico e Gompertz, e considerando eventuais desvios de pressupostos. A estimação dos parâmetros dos modelos foi feita com base no método dos mínimos quadrados utilizando o Algoritmo de Gauss-Newton. Para selecionar o modelo mais adequado foram utilizadas as medidas de não linearidade, o coeficiente de determinação ajustado (R2 aj), o desvio padrão residual (DPR) e o critério de informação de Akaike corrigido (AICc). Com base nos melhores modelos foram determinadas as taxas de crescimento da altura dos colmos e as fases fenológicas da cultura por meio dos pontos críticos. Todas as análises foram realizadas no software estatístico R. No geral, os modelos Logístico e Gompertz sem AR(1) descreveram melhor a altura dos colmos em cana planta e cana soca, respectivamente. Todas as variedades apresentaram crescimento precoce, a variedade RB92579 apresentou maiores taxas em ambos os ciclos.

ABSTRACT: Assessing sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) stalk growth helps to adequately manage the phenological stages of the crop. The aim of this study was to describe the height-growth curve of four sugarcane varieties (RB92579, RB93509, RB931530 and SP79-1011), in irrigated plant-cane and ratoon cane plantations, using the Logistic and Gompertz nonlinear models, while considering all deviations from assumptions. The model parameters were estimated based on the least squares method using the Gauss-Newton algorithm. To select the most suitable model, nonlinear measures, adjusted coefficient of determination (R2 adj), residual standard deviation (RSD), and corrected Akaike information criterion (AICc) were used. Based on the best models, stalk height growth rates and crop phenological stages were determined using critical points. All tests were performed in the free software environment for statistical computing and graphics, R. In general, the Logistic and Gompertz models without AR(1) better described the plant-cane and ratoon cane stalk height, respectively. All varieties showed early growth, and the RB92579 variety presented higher rates in both cycles.

RESUMO O herbicida lactofen vem sendo utilizado por produtores nas mais diversas condições, visando aumentar a produtividade da soja. Objetivou-se estudar a influência de lactofen e do fito-hormônio cinetina nos caracteres morfoagronômicos, partição de carboidratos e produtividade, em cultivares de soja. Foram conduzidos três experimentos em campo, além de um experimento em casa-de-vegetação. Utilizou-se delineamento em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram: lactofen [144 g ha-1 de ingrediente ativo (i.a.)], lactofen + cinetina (144 g ha-1 de i.a. + 0,5 g ha-1), cinetina (0,5 g ha-1), corte manual das gemas apicais e controle. Na subparcela, foram utilizadas seis cultivares de soja (M 6410 IPRO, M 5917 IPRO, NS 7670 RR, NS 6909 IPRO, BMX Lança IPRO e Produza IPRO). Em campo, foram avaliados o índice de acamamento, altura de plantas, número de nós e ramos, vagens e grãos por planta, massa de 100 grãos e produtividade. Em casa-de-vegetação, foram quantificados o amido, açúcares redutores, sacarose e açúcares totais nas folhas, caules e raízes de três cultivares de soja. A aplicação de lactofen em V6 influenciou nas características morfoagronômicas das cultivares no campo e incrementou a produtividade em 312 kg ha-1 de soja, considerando-se todas as cultivares. O fito-hormônio não influenciou nas características morfoagronômicas e produtividade. Os tratamentos não induziram alteração na partição de carboidratos destinados às raízes.

ABSTRACT The herbicide lactofen has been used by producers in many conditions, in order to increase the soybean yield. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of lactofen and the phytohormone kinetin on the morpho-agronomic traits, carbohydrate partitioning and yield, in soybean cultivars. Three experiments were carried out in the field, in addition to one experiment in a greenhouse. A randomized block design, with four replications, was used. The treatments were: lactofen [144 g ha-1 of active ingredient (a.i.)], lactofen + kinetin (144 g ha-1 of a.i. + 0.5 g ha-1), kinetin (0.5 g ha-1), manual cutting of apical buds and control. In the subplots, six soybean cultivars (M 6410 IPRO, M 5917 IPRO, NS 7670 RR, NS 6909 IPRO, BMX Lança IPRO and Produza IPRO) were used. In the field, the plant lodging index, plant height, number of nodes and branches, pods and grains per plant, mass of 100 grains and grain yield were evaluated. In the greenhouse, the starch, reducing sugars, sucrose and total sugars in the leaves, stems and roots of three soybean cultivars were quantified. The application of lactofen in the V6 stage influenced the morpho-agronomic traits of the cultivars in the field and increased the soybean yield by 312 kg ha-1, considering all the cultivars. The phytohormone did not influence the morpho-agronomic traits neither the grain yield. The treatments did not induce modification in the partitioning of carbohydrates destined to the roots.

ABSTRACT The sugarcane spittlebug, Mahanarva fimbriolata (Walker) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) is an economically important pest of sugarcane in Brazil. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a greenhouse methodology to screen large sugarcane populations for resistance to spittlebug Mahanarva fimbriolata. A resistant and a susceptible genotype (H. Kawandang and SP81-3250) were first used to determine adequate days after infestation and levels of infestation (number of nymphs per plant) for comparing the resistance of genotypes. Then, 74 sugarcane genotypes including three susceptible and three resistant controls were screened for resistance. The screening method consists in infesting single-tiller plants supported in a small plant growth unit and assessing the damage by using a 1-5 visual damage score. Our data suggest screening with four to six nymphs per plant and the damage score assessment at least 21 days after infestation. The screening technique was proved reliable as susceptible and resistant controls were placed in their respective resistance category. Three genotypes were classified as resistant while the majority of genotypes were classified as susceptible to spittlebug, indicating the need of breeding for resistance.

RESUMO A broca da cana-de-açúcar Diatraea saccharalis Fabr. (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) é uma das mais importantes pragas da cana-de-açúcar nas Américas. Este estudo foi realizado para investigar múltiplos traços de resistência em oito genótipos de cana-de-açúcar contra D. saccharalis, incluindo cinco cultivares comerciais e três germoplasmas exóticos com potencial para servir de fontes de resistência contra esta praga. A preferência de oviposição foi avaliada por meio de testes de escolha livre e de não-escolha. O desempenho de larvas de estágio inicial que se alimentam das folhas e de larvas de estádio tardio alimentando-se com os colmos também foi avaliado. Houve diferenças entre os genótipos para o número de ovos e posturas no teste de livre escolha, enquanto não foram observadas diferenças no teste de não-escolha. Houve também diferenças na sobrevivência de larvas de estádios iniciais que se alimentam das folhas, índice de lesões e dano no colmo. O genótipo IM76-228 foi o menos preferido para a oviposição e parece que a largura da folha teve alguma influência sobre a preferência dos adultos em vez da intensidade de verde das folhas. IM76-228 e RB867515 provocaram uma mortalidade mais elevada de larvas de estádio inicial alimentando-se dos colmos, enquanto que IM76-228 e RB985523 apresentaram menor dano nas folhas e nos colmos. O genótipo IM76-228 foi o mais resistente a D. saccharalis e pode servir como fonte de genes para resistência em programas de melhoramento de cana-de-açúcar.

ABSTRACT The sugarcane borer Diatraea saccharalis Fabr. (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is one of the most important pests of sugarcane in the Americas. The purpose of this study was to assess multiple resistance traits in eight sugarcane genotypes against D. saccharalis, including five commercial cultivars and three exotic germplasm with potential to serve as resistance sources against this pest. The oviposition preference was assessed by using both free-choice and non-choice tests. The performance of both early stage larvae feeding on the leaves and late stages larvae feeding within the stalks were also assessed. There were differences among genotypes for number of both eggs and egg cluster in the free-choice test while no differences in non-choice test were observed. There were also differences in survival of early stage larvae feeding on the leaves, foliar injury rating and stalk damage. The genotype IM76-228 was the least preferred for oviposition and it seems that leaf width had some influence on adults’ preference rather than greening of the leaves. IM76-228 and RB867515 causes higher mortality of early stage larvae feeding in the stalks while IM76-228 and RB985523 had lower damage in both leaves and stalks. The genotype IM76-228 was the most resistant to D. saccharalis and could serve as genes sources for resistance in sugarcane breeding programs.
