ABSTRACT A study was carried out concerning the prevalence of Streptococcus suis type II in swines in Botucatu region, São Paulo State. Nine properties were studied, in a total of 331 animals of Large White X Landrace breeding, being 164 (49.55%) males and 167 (50.45%) females, with ages ranging from 4 to 6 weeks. The samples were obtained by sterile swabs from tonsils and were cultivated in MacConkey and 10% Bovine Blood Agar media. The plates were incubated at 37oC till 72 hours. The following tests were performed for the biochemical classification: acid production from inulin, lactose, raffinose, manitol, salicin, sorbitol and trehalose, aesculin hydrolysis, sodium hipurate and growth in saline solution 6.5%. Streptococcus suis type II were isolated in 34 (10.27%) samples. Ampicilin, oxacilin, penicillin, cloramphenicol, tetracycline, sulfazotrim, gentamicin and cephalotine were used to determine sensitivity. The results of the antibiogram, according to its sensitivity and resistance, respectively, are expressed as follow: cloramphenicol (92.86% and 3.57%), cephalotine (92.86% and 3.57%), oxacilin (92.86% and 7.14%), ampicilin (85.72% and 7.14%), penicillin (71.43% and 3.57%), gentamicin (45.43% and 35.71%), tetracycline (7.14% and 85.72%) and sulfazotrim (7.14% and 85.72%). region State studied 33 breeding 16 49.55% 4955 49 55 (49.55% 50.45% 5045 50 45 (50.45% females weeks 10 media oC 7 hours classification inulin lactose raffinose manitol salicin trehalose hydrolysis 65 5 6.5% 3 10.27% 1027 27 (10.27% Ampicilin antibiogram resistance respectively follow 92.86% 9286 92 86 (92.86 3.57%, 357 3.57% , 57 3.57%) 7.14%, 714 7.14% 14 7.14%) 85.72% 8572 85 (85.72 71.43% 7143 71 43 (71.43 45.43% 4543 (45.43 35.71%, 3571 35.71% 35 35.71%) (7.14 85.72%. . 1 49.55 495 (49.55 50.45 504 (50.45 6.5 10.27 102 2 (10.27 92.86 928 9 8 (92.8 3.57 7.14 85.72 857 (85.7 71.43 (71.4 45.43 454 (45.4 35.71 (7.1 49.5 (49.5 50.4 (50.4 6. 10.2 (10.2 92.8 (92. 3.5 7.1 85.7 (85. 71.4 (71. 45.4 (45. 35.7 (7. 49.
