ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this randomized clinical trial was to evaluate and compare, during the first week of rapid maxillary expansion (RME), the impact caused by two types of appliances: Hyrax and Hybrid Hyrax. Methods: Forty-two patients who met the eligibility criteria (aged 11-14 years, with transverse maxillary deficiency, posterior crossbite, and presence of maxillary first premolars and first permanent molars) were selected and randomly divided into two groups: TBB GROUP (tooth-bone-borne expander), treated with Hybrid Hyrax (12 females and 9 males, mean age 13.3 ± 1.3 years), and TB GROUP (tooth-borne expander), treated with Hyrax (5 females and 16 males, mean age 13.3 ± 1.4 years). Pain and discomfort were assessed in two times: after the first day of activation (T1) and four days after, by means of the numerical rate scale and the instrument MFIQ (Mandibular Functional Impairment Questionnaire). Descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney test were used for comparison between groups and between sexes. A 5% significance level was adopted. Results: Both appliances had a negative impact, generating pain and discomfort, and reducing functional capacity. However, the scores obtained were of low intensity and no significant differences were observed between the groups. Considering sexes, there were statistically significant differences, with the female sex presenting higher scores for pain and functional limitation. Conclusions: Despite causing impact in pain and increase in the functional limitation, these changes were of low intensity, with no statistical difference between the groups. Females were more sensitive to the impact caused by the RME. RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo deste ensaio clínico randomizado foi avaliar e comparar, durante a primeira semana de expansão rápida da maxila (ERM), o impacto causado por dois tipos de aparelhos: Hyrax e Hyrax Híbrido. Métodos: Quarenta e dois pacientes que atendiam aos critérios de seleção (idade de 11 a 14 anos, com deficiência transversal da maxila, mordida cruzada posterior e presença de primeiros pré-molares e primeiros molares permanentes superiores) foram selecionados e divididos aleatoriamente em dois grupos: Grupo DOS (expansor dento-osseossuportado), tratado com Hyrax Híbrido (12 mulheres e 9 homens, idade média 13,3 ± 1,3 anos), e Grupo DS (expansor dentossuportado), tratado com Hyrax (5 mulheres e 16 homens, idade média de 13,3 ± 1,4 anos). A dor e o desconforto foram avaliados em dois momentos: após o primeiro dia de ativação (T1) e após quatro dias, por meio da escala de frequência numérica e do instrumento MFIQ (Questionário de Limitação Funcional Mandibular). RESUMO Introdução: A retração ortodôntica dos dentes anteriores é indicada quando o paciente apresenta má oclusão com vestibularização dos incisivos. Diferentes mecânicas são indicadas para realizar essa retração. Objetivo: O objetivo do presente estudo foi comparar as tensões geradas por quatro diferentes tipos de mecânicas de retração nas raízes dos dentes anteriores. Métodos: Um modelo fotoelástico foi confeccionado simulando uma arcada com os primeiros pré-molares extraídos. Foram preparados 60 arcos de retração, sendo quinze para cada tipo de mecânica avaliada: deslizamento, alça de Bull, alça em T e arco de dupla chave. As tensões foram observadas em duas perspectivas: oclusal e oblíqua. Na vista oclusal, as tensões foram comparadas entre os seis dentes anteriores. Na vista oblíqua, as tensões foram comparadas entre os terços radiculares do canino esquerdo. Resultados: Na vista oclusal, a mecânica com alça de Bull apresentou maiores tensões, seguida da alça em T, arco de dupla chave e mecânica de deslizamento. Em todas as mecânicas, as tensões se concentraram mais nos caninos do que nos incisivos. Na vista oblíqua, a mecânica com alça de Bull gerou maiores tensões nas regiões cervicais dos caninos; nas regiões apicais, não houve diferenças nas tensões entre os quatro tipos de mecânicas. Dentro de uma mesma mecânica, as maiores tensões estiveram presentes nas regiões cervicais. Conclusão: A mecânica de retração com alça de Bull apresentou a maior média de tensões, e a mecânica de retração por deslizamento apresentou a menor média de tensões na raiz dos dentes anteroinferiores, nas vistas oclusal e oblíqua.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Orthodontic retraction of the anterior teeth is indicated when the patient has a malocclusion with protrusion of the incisors. Several mechanics are indicated to perform this retraction. Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the strains generated by four different types of retraction mechanics along the roots of the anterior teeth. Methods: A photoelastic model simulating an arch with first premolars extraction was made. Sixty retraction archwires were prepared, including fifteen for each type of mechanics evaluated: sliding, teardrop loop spring, T-loop spring and double key loop archwire. The strains were observed in two perspectives: occlusal and oblique. In the occlusal perspective, strains were compared among the six anterior teeth. From the oblique perspective, strains were compared among the thirds of the left canine root. Results: In the occlusal perspective, the teardrop loop spring mechanics presented greater strains, followed by T-loop spring, double key loop archwire and sliding mechanics. In all mechanics, strains were more concentrated in the canines than in the incisors. From the oblique perspective, the teardrop loop mechanics generated greater strains in the cervical regions of the canine, and in the apical regions, no differences were found in strains among the four types of mechanics. In the same mechanics, greater strains were present in the cervical zones. Conclusion: The teardrop loop spring retraction mechanic presented the greatest mean strain, and the sliding retraction mechanic presented the lowest mean strain on the root of anteroinferior teeth in the occlusal and oblique perspectives.

RESUMO Objetivo: o objetivo da presente revisão foi avaliar as mudanças na espessura óssea alveolar após o término do tratamento ortodôntico. Métodos: as bases de dados MEDLINE, EMBASE e LILACS foram consultadas para artigos publicados até julho de 2018, sendo considerados elegíveis somente estudos prospectivos clínicos que relataram a espessura óssea em adultos submetidos ao tratamento ortodôntico não cirúrgico. Resultados: no total, 12 estudos atenderam aos critérios de inclusão, e a maioria dos estudos mostrou que o tratamento ortodôntico promove redução na espessura óssea dos incisivos, principalmente na face palatina. Conclusão: em pacientes submetidos a diferentes técnicas ortodônticas, foi observada uma redução significativa na espessura óssea, especialmente na face palatina. Relevância clínica: esses achados são relevantes e devem ser considerados no diagnóstico e plano de tratamento do movimento dentário, com o objetivo de prevenir a ocorrência de deiscências e fenestrações ósseas.

ABSTRACT Objectives: This review aimed at evaluating changes in alveolar bone thickness after completion of orthodontic treatment. Methods: Only prospective clinical studies that reported bone thickness in adult patients undergoing non-surgical orthodontic treatment were considered eligible. MEDLINE, EMBASE and LILACS databases were searched for articles published up to July 2018. Results: A total of 12 studies met the selected criteria. Most of the studies showed that orthodontic treatment produces a reduction in bone thickness of incisors, mainly at the palatal side. Conclusion: On patients undergoing different orthodontic treatment techniques, there was a significant bone thickness reduction, mainly on the palatal side. Clinical relevance: These findings are relevant and have to be considered in diagnosis and planning of tooth movement, in order to prevent the occurrence of dehiscence and fenestration in alveolar bone.

RESUMO Objetivo: o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o grau de percepção da atratividade do sorriso por dentistas, estudantes de Odontologia e leigos, em casos de agenesia dos incisivos laterais superiores substituídos por caninos, para fechamento do espaço. Métodos: uma fotografia extrabucal frontal do sorriso de uma mulher com 20 anos de idade foi alterada simulando agenesia e seu tratamento por meio de: reposicionamento do canino, remodelação, clareamento ou contorno gengival. Um questionário foi distribuído aos indivíduos dos três grupos (n= 150), com o objetivo de avaliar o grau de percepção estética. Uma escala de atratividade também foi usada, com ‘0’ representando pouco atraente e ‘10’, muito atraente. Resultados: na avaliação comparativa entre as fotografias, a imagem original obteve o maior nível de aceitação. A fotografia “i” (agenesia de ambos os incisivos laterais tratada com reposição e remodelação dos caninos) foi classificada como a menos atraente pelos dentistas, enquanto os estudantes e os leigos classificaram a “f” (agenesia de ambos os incisivos laterais tratada com reposição dos caninos, contorno gengival, clareamento e remodelação) como a pior. Conclusão: os métodos de tratamento mais aceitos entre dentistas e estudantes foram aqueles que envolviam mudanças no contorno gengival, enquanto entre os leigos foram aqueles que envolviam apenas remodelação.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of perception of attractiveness of the smile among dentists, dental students, and lay persons in cases of agenesis of the maxillary lateral incisors replaced by canines for space closure. Methods: A smiling front view extraoral photograph of a 20-year-old woman was digitally altered simulating agenesis and its treatment, by means of: repositioning, reshaping or bleaching the canine, and gingival contour. A questionnaire was distributed to individuals of the three groups (n= 150), with a view to evaluating their degree of esthetic perception. An attractiveness scale was also used, with ‘0’ representing unattractive and ‘10’, very attractive. Results: In the comparative evaluation among all the photographs, the original image obtained the highest level of acceptance. Photograph ‘i’ (agenesis of both lateral incisors treated with reposition and reshaping of the canines) was ranked as the least attractive by the dentists, whereas the student and lay persons ranked photograph ‘f’ (agenesis of both lateral incisors treated with reposition of the canines, gingival contour, bleaching and reshaping) as the worst. Conclusion: The methods of treatment most accepted among the dentists and students were those that involved changes in the gingival contour, whereas among lay persons, they were those that involved only reshaping.

RESUMO Introdução: a expansão rápida da maxila assistida cirurgicamente (ERMAC) é um procedimento que reduz a resistência das suturas, corrigindo a mordida cruzada posterior em adultos. Objetivo: o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o status periodontal de 17 adultos submetidos a esse procedimento. Métodos: o nível clínico de inserção (NCI), a recessão gengival, gengiva inserida e sangramento foram avaliados nos primeiros pré-molares, molares, incisivos centrais e laterais superiores dos lados direito e esquerdo antes da cirurgia, e depois de 5 dias e 6 meses. Médias, desvios-padrão, medianas, valores mínimos e máximos foram comparados entre as avaliações, usando os testes de Friedman e McNemar. Resultados: houve aumento estatisticamente significativo no NCI no incisivo central direito, pré-molares direito e esquerdo e molares direito e esquerdo. Houve aumento estatisticamente significativo na recessão gengival nos pré-molares e nos molares direito e esquerdo. A quantidade de gengiva inserida diminuiu significativamente nos pré-molares direitos e molares direitos e esquerdos. Houve aumento no sangramento na maioria dos dentes. Conclusão: os resultados indicaram que a ERMAC pode causar alterações no tecido periodontal.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion is a procedure that reduces the resistance of the sutures correcting the posterior crossbite in adults. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the periodontal status of 17 adults submitted to this procedure. Methods: The clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival recession, attached gingiva and bleeding were evaluated in maxillary first premolars and molars, central and lateral incisors of right and left sides before surgery, 5 days and 6 months after. Means, standard deviation, medians, minimum and maximum values were compared among the evaluations using the Friedman and McNemar tests. Results: There was a statistically significant increase in CAL in the right central incisor, right and left premolars and right and left molars. There was a statistically significant increase in gingival recession in the right and left premolars and molars. The amount of attached gingiva significantly decreased in right premolars and right and left molars. There was increase in bleeding in most of the teeth. Conclusion: Results indicated that the surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion might cause alterations in periodontal tissue.

RESUMO Introdução: o diagnóstico do padrão craniofacial é fundamental em Ortodontia, visto que influencia tanto a decisão terapêutica quanto seu prognóstico. Capelozza Filho propôs um método subjetivo de classificação facial em cinco padrões: Padrão I, Padrão II, Padrão III, Face Longa e Face Curta. Objetivo: investigar o desempenho do método subjetivo de classificação do padrão facial, quando aplicado em adultos. Métodos: a amostra foi composta por 52 adultos de ambos os sexos. Fotografias frontal e lateral em repouso, frontal em sorriso e telerradiografia em norma lateral foram montadas em apresentação do PowerPoint® e levadas pessoalmente aos vinte examinadores. Para se avaliar o desempenho do método, foi analisada a reprodutibilidade por meio do teste Kappa e calculados os valores de acurácia, sensibilidade e valor preditivo positivo, para os quais adotou-se 70% como valor crítico. O padrão-ouro foi constituído pela classificação realizada pelo autor do método. Resultados: a reprodutibilidade foi considerada regular (Kappa 0,501) enquanto a acurácia, sensibilidade e valor preditivo positivo obtiveram resultados próximos; porém, abaixo de 70%. Conclusão: o método subjetivo de classificação facial precisa de aprimoramentos nos critérios morfológicos utilizados para discriminar os cinco padrões faciais.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Craniofacial pattern diagnosis is vital in Orthodontics, as it influences decision-making regarding treatment options and prognosis. Capelozza Filho proposed a subjective method for facial classification comprising five patterns: I, II, III, Long Face and Short Face. Objective: To investigate the accuracy of a subjective classification method of facial patterns applied to adults. Methods: A sample consisting of 52 adults was used for this study. Frontal and lateral view photographs were taken with subjects at rest position, including frontal smile. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were organized in a PowerPoint® presentation and submitted to 20 raters. Method performance was assessed by examining reproducibility with Kappa test and calculating accuracy, sensitivity and positive predictive values, for which 70% was set as critical value. The gold standard of the classification was personally set by the author of the method. Results: Reproducibility was considered moderate (Kappa = 0.501); while accuracy, sensitivity and positive predictive values yielded similar results, but below 70%. Conclusions: The subjective method of facial classification employed in the present study still needs to have its morphological criteria improved in order to be used to discriminate the five facial patterns.

RESUMO A interceptação das chuvas (I) pela vegetação pode afetar o comportamento hidrológico de uma bacia hidrográfica, influenciando os processos de modelagem hidrológica. As limitações do monitoramento e a grande variedade do clima e da vegetação brasileira dificultam as estimativas do processo de interceptação e; por isso, essa variável é geralmente negligenciada ou subestimada durante as modelagens hidrológicas. Esse estudo analisou a interceptação da chuva em duas florestas de mata nativa, características do Bioma Mata Atlântica (parcelas MA1 e MA2), e uma floresta de eucalipto (parcela RE); localizadas na região sul do Brasil. A precipitação interna (Pi) e o escoamento pelo tronco (Et) foram monitorados por coletores de baixo custo, sendo utilizados 40 coletores de Pi na parcela MA1 e 20 coletores nas parcelas MA2 e RE, e 3 coletores de Et em cada parcela. No total foram analisadas 40, 34 e 22 coletas de Pi e 17, 18 e 6 coletas de Et nas parcelas MA1, MA2 e RE, respectivamente. A precipitação total (P) observada foi igual a 2046,50; 1726,23 e 957,96 mm; e a Pi total verificada foi de 75,97; 82,40 e 78,07% de P, para as parcelas MA1, MA2 e RE, respectivamente. O Et foi igual a 5,69; 2,91 e 11,09% de P; e a I estimada foi de 17,76; 16,90 e 14,56% de P, para as parcelas MA1, MA2 e RE, respectivamente. Os valores de Pi e I observados estão dentro da faixa reportadas por outros autores para vegetação semelhante, entretanto o Et monitorado foi bem superior aos resultados relatados. As relações de ajuste apresentaram limitações devido ao número de coletores de Et utilizados, do número de coletas de Pi e Et monitoradas, sobretudo em RE e também; em razão da grande variabilidade espacial e temporal dos processos analisados, que dificultam o processo de monitoramento.

ABSTRACT Rainfall interception by vegetation (I) can affect the hydrological behavior of a watershed, influencing the hydrological modeling processes. The limitations of monitoring and the wide variety of Brazilian climate and vegetation make it difficult to estimate the interception process. Therefore interception is often overlooked or underestimated in hydrological modeling. This study analyzed the rainfall interception in two forests with native vegetation belonging to the Atlantic Forest biome (MA1 and MA2 plots), and a eucalyptus forest (RE plot); located in southern Brazil. The throughfall (Pi) and stemflow (Et) were monitored for low cost collectors. Forty Pi collectors were used in MA1 plot and 20 collectors in MA2 and RE plots, and three Et collectors in each plot. In total 40, 34 and 22 collections of Pi and 17, 18 and 6 Et collections in MA1, MA2 and RE plots, respectively were analyzed. The total precipitation (P) observed was equal to 2046.50; 1726.23 and 957.96 mm; and total Pi found was 75.97; 82.40 and 78.07% of P, for the plots MA1, MA2 and RE, respectively. The Et was equal to 5.69; 2.91 and 11.09% P; and the estimated I was 17.76; 16.90 and 14.56% P, for MA1, MA2 and RE plots, respectively. Observed values of Pi and I are within the range reported by other authors for similar vegetation, however monitored Et was well above the reported results. The adjustment ratios presented limitations due to the number of Et collectors used and the number of Pi and Et collections monitored, especially in the RE plot; and also because of the large spatial and temporal variability of the processes analyzed, that make the monitoring process difficult.

INTRODUÇÃO: a anomalia de raiz curta (ARC) é uma patologia incomum e constitui um desafio para o tratamento ortodôntico, pois tende a elevar o risco de reabsorção radicular. OBJETIVO: revisar a literatura sobre o diagnóstico, a etiologia e a conduta ortodôntica recomendada para esses casos, ilustrando esse tema com relatos de caso. MÉTODOS: devido ao baixo nível de evidência sobre o tema, realizou-se a revisão narrativa da literatura com estratégia de busca nas bases de dados PubMed, SciELO, Lilacs, Scopus e Web of Science. RESULTADOS: o diagnóstico diferencial da ARC deverá ser realizado entre dentes com rizogênese incompleta, reabsorção radicular externa apical, displasia dentinária tipo I e hipoplasia radicular pós-traumatismo dentário. A ARC apresenta determinantes genéticos para o encurtamento, e a movimentação ortodôntica exige que medidas de controle clínico e radiográfico sejam adotadas, ensejando a restrição de danos. CONCLUSÃO: a movimentação ortodôntica de dentes com ARC somente é contraindicada em casos extremos. A conduta cautelosa em todas as suas etapas poderá minimizar a perda de inserção e lograr em estabilidade em longo prazo.

INTRODUCTION: Short Root Anomaly (SRA) is an uncommon disease and a challenge for orthodontic treatment as it tends to increase the risk of root resorption. OBJECTIVE: Assess the current status of the diagnosis, etiology and orthodontic management of teeth with SRA, and present case reports. METHOD: A literature review was carried out in PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, Scopus and Web of Science databases. RESULTS: A differential diagnosis of SRA should be conducted for teeth with incomplete root formation, external apical root resorption, dentin dysplasia type I and post dental trauma root hypoplasia. SRA is genetically determined and orthodontic movement requires changes in clinical and radiographic management in order to restrict damage. CONCLUSION: Orthodontic movement of teeth with SRA is contraindicated in extreme cases, only. Caution at all stages could minimize attachment loss and lead to long-term stability.

OBJETIVO: avaliar a influência do fator de magnificação da imagem radiográfica nas grandezas angulares, lineares e proporcionais. MÉTODOS: a partir de um crânio seco humano, no qual foram fixadas esferas metálicas de dimensões pré-definidas (1,0mm de diâmetro), 14 telerradiografias foram obtidas em diferentes aparelhos de três fabricantes: Panoura, Instrumentarium e Tomeceph. Foi realizada a análise estatística descritiva e utilizado o teste de correlação de Pearson para verificar a relação entre a taxa de magnificação radiográfica e as grandezas cefalométricas analisadas. RESULTADOS: as medidas lineares apresentaram alta correlação positiva, evidenciando grande influência do fator de magnificação sobre essas grandezas, ao passo que as angulares e proporcionais não apresentaram correlação. CONCLUSÃO: comparações entre medidas cefalométricas lineares obtidas com diferentes aparelhos do mesmo fabricante demonstraram taxas de ampliações máximas de 0,6%, 1,25% e 2,3%, respectivamente, para os aparelhos Instrumentium (OP-100 Instrumentarium), Panoura (10CSU Yoshida) e Satelec/Tomeceph (XMind Satelec/Tomeceph Orion Corp).

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the magnification factor of the radiographic image in angular, linear and proportional measurements. METHODS: From a dried human skull where metallic spheres with predetermined size were fixed (1.0 mm), 14 radiographs were obtained in devices of three different manufacturers: Panoura, Instrumentarium and Tomeceph. The Pearson correlation test was used to investigate the relationship between the rate of radiographic magnification and the cephalometric measurements assessed. RESULTS: According to the results, the linear measurements showed a high positive correlation, pointing out great influence of the magnification factor, while the angular and proportional measurements did not correlate. CONCLUSIONS: Comparisons between linear cephalometric measurements obtained with different devices from the same manufacturer showed maximum rates of expansion of 0.6%, 1.25% and 2.3%, respectively, for the devices from Instrumentarium (OP-100, Instrumentarium, Finland), Panoura (10CSU, Yoshida, Japan) and Satelec/Tomeceph (XMind, Satelec/Tomeceph Orion Corporation, Finland).

OBJETIVO: comparar as forças de ativação, desativação e histerese produzidas por deformação de primeira ordem do fio superelástico Contour NiTi 0,014" (Aditek®) em quatro modelos de braquetes autoligáveis: Damon MX, Easy Clip, Smart Clip e In-Ovation. MÉTODOS: as forças de ativação e desativação foram medidas em máquina universal de tração Instron com velocidade de 3mm/minuto e deslocamento de 4mm. Em cada combinação braquete/fio foram executadas oito repetições. A análise estatística empregou ANOVA e o Teste de Comparações Múltiplas de Tukey. RESULTADOS: com 4mm de deformação, as forças médias de ativação foram, em ordem crescente, Damon = 222gf, Easy Clip = 228gf, In-Ovation = 240gf e Smart-Clip = 306gf; a mesma ordem foi observada nas histereses médias, cujos valores foram, respectivamente, 128gf, 140gf, 150gf e 206gf; os valores das forças de desativação foram, respectivamente, 94gf, 88gf, 90gf e 100gf. CONCLUSÃO: os braquetes com maiores valores nas forças de ativação foram acompanhados por maiores valores na histerese, o que resultou em forças de desativação clinicamente semelhantes, independentemente do tipo de braquete autoligável utilizado.

OBJECTIVE: To compare hysteresis, activation and deactivation forces produced by first-order deformation of Contour 0.014-in NiTi wire (Aditek, Brazil) in four brands of self-ligating brackets: Damon MX, Easy Clip, Smart Clip and In-Ovation. METHODS: Activation and deactivation forces were measured in an Instron universal tensile machine at 3 mm/minute speed to a total displacement of 4 mm. Tests were repeated eight times for each bracket/wire combination. Statistical analysis comprised ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparisons test. RESULTS: Using a 4-mm deformation, mean activation forces increased in the following order: Damon = 222 gf, Easy Clip = 228 gf, In-Ovation = 240 gf and Smart Clip = 306 gf. The same order was observed for mean hysteresis values, i.e., 128 gf, 140 gf, 150 gf and 206 gf, respectively. The respective values of deactivation forces for the Damon, Easy Clip, In-Ovation and Smart Clip brackets were 94 gf, 88 gf, 90 gf and 100 gf. CONCLUSIONS: Brackets with higher activation forces were accompanied by higher hysteresis values, which resulted in clinically similar deactivation forces, regardless of the type of self-ligating brackets used.

The aim of this study was to determine whether image artifacts caused by orthodontic metal accessories interfere with the accuracy of 3D CBCT model superimposition. A human dry skull was subjected three times to a CBCT scan: at first without orthodontic brackets (T1), then with stainless steel brackets bonded without (T2) and with orthodontic arch wires (T3) inserted into the brackets' slots. The registration of image surfaces and the superimposition of 3D models were performed. Within-subject surface distances between T1-T2, T1-T3 and T2-T3 were computed and calculated for comparison among the three data sets. The minimum and maximum Hausdorff Distance units (HDu) computed between the corresponding data points of the T1 and T2 CBCT 3D surface images were 0.000000 and 0.049280 HDu, respectively, and the mean distance was 0.002497 HDu. The minimum and maximum Hausdorff Distances between T1 and T3 were 0.000000 and 0.047440 HDu, respectively, with a mean distance of 0.002585 HDu. In the comparison between T2 and T3, the minimum, maximum and mean Hausdorff Distances were 0.000000, 0.025616 and 0.000347 HDu, respectively. In the current study, the image artifacts caused by metal orthodontic accessories did not compromise the accuracy of the 3D model superimposition. Color-coded maps of overlaid structures complemented the computed Hausdorff Distances and demonstrated a precise fusion between the data sets.

OBJETIVO: o objetivo desse trabalho foi comparar as forças de atrito entre fios NiTi 0,014" (Aditek) com deformações horizontais de 4mm, e braquetes com diferentes sistemas de ligação dos arcos. MÉTODOS: foram testados 4 tipos de braquetes autoligáveis (Damon MX, Easy Clip, Smart Clip e In-Ovation), um braquete triplo (Synergy) e um braquete gêmeo com amarrilho 8 (Tecnident). Como grupo controle, foi utilizado braquete gêmeo com ligadura elástica convencional (Morelli). Foram executadas 10 repetições em cada combinação arco/braquete. As forças de atrito foram medidas em máquina de tração universal Instron, com velocidade de 3mm/minuto e deslocamento total de 6mm. Para análise estatística, usou-se a ANOVA e o Teste de Comparações Múltiplas de Dunnett. RESULTADOS: as forças de atrito por deformação do fio se mostraram crescentes na seguinte ordem: Synergy, Damon, amarrilho 8, Easy Clip, In-Ovation, Smart-Clip e ligadura convencional. As diferenças entre todos os grupos foram estatisticamente significantes, com exceção do Amarrilho 8 em relação aos grupos Damon e Easy Clip. CONCLUSÃO: em relação à ligadura convencional, todos os sistemas de fechamento das canaletas testados são eficientes em reduzir a força de atrito, porém, tal redução varia significativamente de acordo com o sistema de fechamento da canaleta selecionado.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to compare the frictional forces between 0.014-in NiTi wires (Aditek) with 4 mm horizontal deflection and brackets with different archwire ligation systems. METHODS: Four types of self-ligating brackets (Damon MX, Easy Clip, Smart Clip and In-Ovation), a triple bracket (Synergy) and a twin bracket with 8-shaped ligature (Tecnident) were tested. Twin brackets with conventional elastomeric ligatures (Morelli) were used as control group. Tests were repeated 10 times for each bracket/archwire combination. Frictional forces were measured in an Instron universal tensile machine at 3 mm/minute speed and a total displacement of 6 mm. Statistical analysis comprised ANOVA and Dunnett's multiple comparison post hoc test. RESULTS: Deflection-induced frictional (DIF) forces increased in the following order: Synergy, Damon, 8-shaped Ligature, Easy Clip, In-Ovation, Smart-Clip and conventional ligatures. The differences among groups were significant, with the exception of the 8-shaped ligature groups which was equal to the Damon and Easy Clip groups. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to conventional ligatures, all ligation systems tested reduced frictional forces. However, such reduction varied according to the ligation system employed.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and compare three alternative methods for controlling classical friction: Self-ligating brackets (SLB), special brackets (SB) and special elastomeric ligatures (SEB). METHODS: The study compared Damon MX, Smart Clip, In-Ovation and Easy Clip self-ligating bracket systems, the special Synergy brackets and Morelli's twin bracket with special 8-shaped elastomeric ligatures. New and used Morelli brackets with new and used elastomeric ligatures were used as control. All brackets had 0.022 x 0.028-in slots. 0.014-in nickel-titanium and stainless steel 0.019 x 0.025-in wires were tied to first premolar steel brackets using each archwire ligation method and pulled by an Instron machine at a speed of 0.5 mm/minute. Prior to the mechanical tests the absence of binding in the device was ruled out. Statistical analysis consisted of the Kruskal-Wallis test and multiple non-parametric analyses at a 1% significance level. RESULTS: When a 0.014-in archwire was employed, all ligation methods exhibited classical friction forces close to zero, except Morelli brackets with new and old elastomeric ligatures, which displayed 64 and 44 centiNewtons, respectively. When a 0.019 x 0.025-in archwire was employed, all ligation methods exhibited values close to zero, except the In-Ovation brackets, which yielded 45 cN, and the Morelli brackets with new and old elastomeric ligatures, which displayed 82 and 49 centiNewtons, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Damon MX, Easy Clip, Smart Clip, Synergy bracket systems and 8-shaped ligatures proved to be equally effective alternatives for controlling classical friction using 0.014-in nickel-titanium archwires and 0.019 x 0.025-in steel archwires, while the In-Ovation was efficient with 0.014-in archwires but with 0.019 x 0.025-in archwires it exhibited friction that was similar to conventional brackets with used elastomeric ligatures.

A área anterior da cavidade nasal desempenha papel fundamental na fisiologia respiratória. OBJETIVO: Analisar durante um período do crescimento possível alteração da área transversal mínima (MCA) e do volume nasal da região anterior da cavidade nasal. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Foram avaliadas 29 crianças (14 meninos, 15 meninas) com média de idade de 7,81 anos no primeiro exame (M1) e de 11,27 anos no segundo exame (M2), sem sintomas de obstrução nasal. O intervalo entre os exames foi de 36-48 meses. As crianças foram submetidas ao exame de rinometria acústica, registrando-se as áreas transversais mínimas, volumes e suas correlações com os gêneros. FORMA DE ESTUDO: Estudo de coorte. RESULTADOS: A média da área transversal da cavidade nasal de MCA para as meninas foi de 0,30±0,09cm2 (M1) e de 0,30±0,14cm2 (M2), enquanto que para os meninos foi de 0,24±0,12cm2 (M1) e de 0,32±0,10cm2 (M2). As médias dos volumes totais encontradas, para toda a amostra, foram de 2,17±0,23cm3 (MCA1-M1), 2,56±0,27cm3 (MCA1-M2), 4,24±1,17cm3 (MCA2-M2) e de 4,63±1,10cm3 (MCA2-M2). CONCLUSÃO: Não houve alteração significativa da área transversal mínima da região anterior da cavidade nasal. Não houve diferença significativa entre os gêneros, tanto para MCA como para o volume. Houve aumento significativo do volume em MCA1.

The area above the nasal cavity plays a role in respiratory physiology. AIM: To analyze, during a period of growth, a possible change in the minimum cross sectional area (MCA) and nasal volume of the anterior nasal cavity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated 29 children (14 boys and 15 girls) with a mean age of 7.81 years at first examination (M1) and 11.27 years in the second examination (M2), without symptoms of nasal obstruction. The interval between examinations was 36-48 months. Children were subjected to the examination of acoustic rhinometry in which we recorded the minimum cross-sectional areas, volumes and their correlations with gender. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort. RESULTS: The mean cross-sectional area of the nasal cavity of MCA for girls was 0.30 ± 0.09 cm2 (M1) and 0.30 ± 0.14 cm2 (M2), while for boys was 0.24 ± 0.12 cm2 (M1) and 0.32 ± 0.10 cm2 (M2). The mean values of the total volumes found for the whole sample were 2.17 ± 0.23 cm3 (MCA1-M1), 2.56 ± 0.27 cm3 (MCA1-M2), 4.24 ± 1.17 cm3 (MCA2- M2) and 4.63 ± 1.10 cm3 (MCA2-M2). CONCLUSION: There was no significant change in the minimum cross sectional area of the anterior nasal cavity. There was no significant difference between genders for both MCA and for the volume. There was a significant increase in MCA1.
