Abstract In endemic areas for canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL), the occurrence of coinfection with other pathogens, such as Ehrlichia spp., has been associated with worsening of the clinical condition. The study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of histological changes in the myocardia of dogs naturally infected with Leishmania chagasi with or without coinfection with Ehrlichia spp.. We evaluated paraffin-embedded myocardial sections from 31 dogs, affected by either L. chagasi alone or coinfected with L. chagasi and Ehrlichia spp., to compare the extent and degree of cardiac damage. The blocks were divided into two groups. G1 (dogs infected only by L. chagasi) and G2 (dogs coinfected with L. chagasi and Ehrlichia spp.). The right atrium free wall, right ventricle free wall, left ventricle, and interventricular septum of all groups were evaluated. Cardiac alterations were observed in 41.93% (52/124) of the fragments evaluated and inflammatory infiltrate was the most common pattern found. The G2 group showed a higher incidence of myocarditis, with 61.53% (32/52), compared to the G1 group, in which 20 out of 72 cases (27.7%) exhibited histopathological changes (p <0.05). These findings confirmed that coinfection can potentiate cardiac damage in dogs. Resumo Em áreas endêmicas para leishmaniose visceral canina, a ocorrência de coinfecção com outros patógenos, como Ehrlichia spp., tem sido associada à piora do quadro clínico dos animais. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a ocorrência de alterações histológicas no miocárdio de cães naturalmente infectados por Leishmania chagasi, associadas ou não à ocorrência de coinfecção por Ehrlichia spp.. Para isso, foram avaliados fragmentos parafinizados de 31 cães afetados por L. chagasi e Ehrlichia spp. Para a avaliação e a comparação dos danos cardíacos, os blocos foram divididos em dois grupos, sendo o G1 (infecção somente por L. chagasi) e o G2 (animais coinfectados com L. chagasi e Ehrlichia spp.). Foram avaliados a parede livre do átrio direito, parede livre do ventrículo direito, ventrículo esquerdo e septo interventricular de todos os grupos. Alterações cardíacas foram observadas em 41,93% (52/124) dos fragmentos avaliados, sendo o infiltrado inflamatório o tipo mais comum de lesão encontrada. Resumo A aeluroestrongilose, causada pelo nematoide metastrongilídeo Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, é uma doença respiratória subestimada. Os gatos infectados pelo A. abstrusus podem ser assintomáticos ou apresentarem sinais graves. O A. abstrusus possui distribuição cosmopolita. Apesar disso, estudos sobre esse parasita no Brasil são escassos, e a maioria deles são realizados na região Sul. Este estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a ocorrência de A. abstrusus em gatos de Vilhena, Rondônia, Brasil. De abril de 2020 a fevereiro de 2021, foram avaliadas três amostras consecutivas de fezes de 101 felinos, utilizando-se as técnicas de Baermann e de a Hoffman. Dois gatos (1,98%) foram positivos para A. abstrusus, um pela técnica de Baermann e outro pela técnica de Hoffman. Não foram encontrados outros parasitas pulmonares. Os achados clínicos dos gatos positivos foram descritos, e os resultados deste estudo discutidos sob aspectos clínicos e epidemiológicos.

Abstract Aelurostrongylosis, caused by the metastrongylid nematode Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, is an underestimated feline respiratory disease. Cats infected by A. abstrusus may show subclinical to severe clinical signs. Aelurostrongylus abstrusus has a worldwide distribution. Nevertheless, studies on this parasite in Brazil are scarce, and most have been conducted in the southern regions. This study investigated the occurrence of A. abstrusus in cats in Vilhena, Rondônia, Brazil, from April 2020 to February 2021. Three consecutive individual fecal samples from 101 cats were examined using Baermann and Hoffman tests. Two cats (1.98%) scored positive for A. abstrusus, one with the Baermann examination, and one with the Hoffman technique. No other lungworms were retrieved. The clinicopathological and epizootiological implications are described and discussed.

RESUMO: A hidroterapia apresenta crescente aplicação no ramo da reabilitação animal, com o intuito de aumentar a força, resistência muscular e amplitude de movimento articular, além de reduzir a dor e melhorar o condicionamento físico do paciente. Assim como a hidroterapia, a atividade desenvolvida em solo é indicada para diversas afecções, inclusive para pacientes hipertensos, com atrofia muscular ou com sobrepeso. São escassos os estudos que avaliam a segurança de testes incrementais em esteira aquática e em esteira seca em American Pit Bull Terriers. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos da atividade em esteira aquática e em esteira seca sobre os parâmetros fisiológicos de cães. Para isto, cães da raça American Pit Bull Terrier (n=12) machos, adultos, saudáveis e não treinados foram submetidos a teste de esforço incremental (TEI) em hidroesteira com água (Grupo I) e sem água (Grupo II). A frequência cardíaca (FR), frequência respiratória (FR), temperatura retal (TR), pressão arterial sistólica (PAS) e avaliação eletrocardiográfica, foram aferidas antes da atividade (T0), imediatamente após (T1), 30 minutos após (T2) e 90 minutos após o exercício (T3), e a concentração plasmática de lactato foi dosada nos momentos T0, T1 e T2. Os resultados foram submetidos ao teste de Shapiro-Wilk, análise de variância (ANOVA) e pelo Teste de Tukey, considerando significativo o valor de P < 0.05. Houve diminuição da frequência respiratória (P = 0,00674) após a atividade em esteira aquática, que se mostrou mais exigente que a atividade em esteira terrestre, considerando a apresentação de padrão respiratório mais lento e profundo. As sessões de exercício em ambos os grupos não elevaram a concentração de lactato. O teste de esforço incremental em esteira aquática, ou em esteira seca, pode ser desenvolvido com segurança por cães American Pit Bull saudáveis.

ABSTRACT: The application of hydrotherapy is growing in the field of animal rehabilitation to improve strength, endurance, fitness, and range of motion, in addition to reducing pain. In the same way, land-based activity is recommended for various conditions, including hypertension, muscle atrophy, and obesity. There is a lack of studies that evaluate the safety of incremental exercise in American Pit Bull Terriers. This study assessed the influence of activity on underwater and dry land treadmills on the physiological parameters of dogs. In this regard, 12 adult, male, healthy, and untrained American Pit Bull Terriers were subjected to an incremental exercise test (IET) on the underwater treadmill (Group I) and the dry land treadmill (Group II). Heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and electrocardiographic evaluation, were evaluated before activity (T0), immediately after (T1), 30 min after (T2), and 90 min after the end of exercise (T3), and plasmatic lactate concentrations were measured at T0, T1, and T2 time points. Results obtained were submitted to the Shapiro-Wilk test, ANOVA and Tukey’s test, considering P<0.05. Water activity induced a reduction in RR (P=0.00674) in all examinations after the test on the underwater treadmill and proved to be more demanding than activity on the land treadmill, considering the presence of a deeper and slower RR. Exercise sessions in both groups did not elevate the lactate concentration. The IET can be performed safely on an underwater or dry land treadmill in healthy American Pit Bulls.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Canine exposure to Lutzomyia longipalpis bites and the potential of Leishmania infantum transmissibility for the vector were evaluated. METHODS Immunoglobulin G (IgG) anti-Lu longipalpis saliva and -L. infantum, and blood parasite load were determined in dogs from endemic areas of visceral leishmaniasis. RESULTS Blood parasitism was similar between symptomatic and asymptomatic dogs. IgG anti-L. infantum was higher in symptomatic dogs, but IgG anti-Lu. longipalpis saliva was mostly observed in higher titers in asymptomatic dogs, indicating vector preference for feeding on asymptomatic dogs. CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest a pivotal role of asymptomatic dogs in L. infantum transmission in endemic areas.

A castração de machos e fêmeas tem sido preconizada como a principal técnica para redução do grande número de cães errantes. No entanto, vários são os entraves com relação à escolha do melhor protocolo anestésico, em relação à eficácia, segurança e redução de custos. Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, avaliar os efeitos cardiorrespiratórios, hemogasométricos e analgésicos da utilização de lidocaína em um volume maior, associada à morfina, pela via epidural em cadelas submetidas à ovariosalpingohisterectomia (OSH), com ou sem suplementação de oxigênio. Utilizaram-se 12 cadelas, com peso médio de 11,5±3,7kg e idade de um a quatro anos. Os animais receberam como medicação pré-anestésica (MPA) acepromazina (0,1mg kg-1) e meperidina (5mg kg-1), pela via intramuscular. Após 15 minutos, administrou-se tiopental (10mg kg-1), por via intravenosa, seguido de intubação endotraqueal. Nesse momento, os animais foram alocados em dois grupos: o grupo GCO (com oxigênio, n=06) recebeu suplementação de oxigênio 100% e o grupo GSO (sem oxigênio, n=06) permaneceu intubado sem suplementação de oxigênio. Após a intubação, foi administrada, pela via epidural, em ambos os grupos, morfina (0,1mg kg-1) em volume final ajustado para 1mL 3,0kg-1 de peso com lidocaína 2% sem vasoconstritor. Imediatamente após a anestesia epidural, os animais foram posicionados em decúbito dorsal com a cabeça no mesmo plano do corpo, e iniciou-se o procedimento cirúrgico, o qual foi padronizado em 30 minutos. Em ambos os grupos, foi possível realizar a cirurgia sem a necessidade de complementação analgésica e sem resposta de dor. A pressão arterial média (PAM) foi menor no GSO em todos os momentos em comparação ao basal. No GCO, a PAM foi menor após MPA e após epidural. Houve redução da f de M1 até M6 no GSO. A SaO2 e PaO2 foram maiores no GCO em comparação ao GSO. O pH foi menor no GCO 15 minutos após MPA até 40 minutos após epidural, em comparação ao GSO. Conclui-se que a anestesia epidural lombossacra com morfina e lidocaína na dose e no volume propostos é efetiva para realização de OSH em cadelas, com mínimas alterações cardiovasculares e hemogasométricas, as quais são bem toleradas em animais hígidos. Essa prática é exequível em campanhas de castração em que não há possibilidade de oxigenação dos animais.

Male and female sterilization have been established as the main technique to reduce the huge number of mongrel dogs. However, there are several barriers regarding to the choice of the best anesthetic protocol, in terms of efficacy, security and cost reduction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the analgesic, cardiorespiratory and hemogasometric effects of epidural anesthesia with a large volume of lidocaine in combination with morphine in female dogs submitted to ovariosalpingohisterectomy (OSH), with or without oxygen supplementation. Twelve adult female dogs were used, with average weight of 11.5±3.7kg and age of 1 to 4 years. The animals received acepromazine (0.1mg kg-1) and meperidine (5mg kg-1) as premedication, administered by the intramuscular route. Fifteen minutes later, thiopental (10mg kg-1) was administered by intravenous route, followed by endotracheal intubation. The animals were allocated into two groups: GCO (group with oxygen, n=06), where the animals received 100% oxygen supplementation and GSO (group without oxygen supplementation, n=6), mantained with endotracheal intubation, but without oxygen supplementation. After intubation, epidural with morphine (0,1mg kg-1), adjusted to 1mL 3kg-1 in lidocaine 2% without epinepherine was administered. Immediately after epidural administration, the animals were positioned in dorsal recumbency, with the head in the same level of the body. In both groups, surgery was performed without the need of additional analgesia and without signs of pain. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) was lower in GSO in all moments compared to baseline values. In GCO, MAP was lower after premedication and epidural anesthesia. Respiratory rate was lower from M1 to M6 in GSO. The SaO2 and PaO2 were higher in GCO when compared to GSO. The pH was lower in GCO after 15 minutes after premedication, until 40 minutes after the epidural administration, compared to GSO. It was concluded that the epidural administration using morphine and lidocaine in the dosage and volume proposed are effective to OSH procedure in dogs. The lack of oxygen supplementation promoted minimal cardiovascular and hemogasometric alterations, which is feasible in sterilizations campaigns where there is no possibility of oxygen supplementation of the animals.

O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar os efeitos da expansão volêmica produzida pelo hidroxietilamido 130/0,4 (HES 130/0,4) ou pelo sangue em gatas com hipovolemia induzida. Foram utilizadas 12 gatas adultas, sem raça definida (SRD), com peso médio de 2,85±0,28kg e hígidas. Os animais foram induzidos à anestesia geral com isofluorano a 5V%, intubados e conectados a um sistema sem reinalação de gases. Após a instrumentação, os animais foram mantidos sob anestesia com isoflurano em 1,3V% e mantidos em ventilação mecânica, ciclada a pressão. Em seguida, foi induzida a hipovolemia por meio da retirada de 30ml kg-1 de sangue da artéria femoral. Após 60 minutos da estabilização do paciente, os tratamentos foram iniciados. No grupo hidroxietilamido (GH, n=06), os animais receberam, como reposição volêmica, o hidroxietilamido 130/0,4 no mesmo volume de sangue retirado e, no grupo sangue (GS, n=06), os animais receberam o próprio sangue retirado, sendo considerado grupo controle. A pressão arterial sistólica, a diastólica e a média e a pressão venosa central aumentaram após a reposição volêmica em ambos os grupos. Observou-se, para o GH, aumento da PaCO2 no T15, no T30 e no T60. Houve redução do pH no T30 e no T45 e de íons Na+ no T90 para GH. A restauração das pressões arteriais com a administração de HES 130/0,4 foi similar ao grupo controle. A reposição volêmica com HES 130/0,4 produz aumento acentuado da PVC; e o uso do HES 130/0,4 em gatas submetidas à hipovolemia não produziu alterações clinicamente significativas no equilíbrio ácido-básico.

The aim of this study was to compare the volemic expansion effects produced by hydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4 (HES 130/0.4) or blood, in female cats with induced hypovolemia. Twelve healthy adult female cats, crossbreed and weighing an average of 2.85±0.28kg were used. They were induced into general anesthesia with isofluorane at 5V%, intubated and connected to a non-rebreathing system. After instrumentation, the animals were maintained under anesthesia with isofluorane at 1.3V% and maintained on pressure cycled mechanic ventilation. Afterwards, hypovolemia was induced by withdrawal of 30ml kg-1 of blood from the femoral artery. After 60 minutes of stabilization of the patient, the treatments were initiated. In the hydroxyethyl starch group (GH, n=06) the animals received hydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4 as volemic expansion at the same volume of blood withdrawed, in the blood group (GS, n=06) the animals received their own withdrawed blood, being considered the control group. The systolic, diastolic and mean arterial pressures and central venous pressure increased after volemic expansion in both groups. An increase of PaCO2 at T15, T30 and T60 in GH was observed. In addition, there was reduction of pH at T30 and T45 and Na+ ions at T90 in GH. The arterial pressure restoration with the use of HES 130/0.4 was similar to the control group; the volemic expansion with HES 130/0,4 produces accentuated increase of CVP; the use of HES 130/0,4 in female cats submitted to hypovolemia did not produce clinically significant alterations in acid-base equilibrium.
