RESUMO Estudos de campo e a análise de coleções de herbários permitiram a identificação de dez gêneros e 19 espécies de Malpighiaceae no município de Cunha, Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Este trabalho apresenta uma chave de identificação para espécies, listas de materiais examinados, notas taxonômicas e imagens fotográficas das espécies estudadas. Este estudo apresenta ainda a primeira ocorrência de Stigmaphyllon acuminatum para o Estado de São Paulo. Adicionalmente, apresentamos uma discussão sobre as evidências provenientes de Malpighiaceae que corroboram a ocorrência pretérita e presente de fragmentos de cerrado no vale do rio Paraíba.

ABSTRACT The analysis of fieldwork and herbarium collections made possible the recognition of ten genera and 19 species of Malpighiaceae in the municipality of Cunha, State of São Paulo, Brazil. This study presents an identification key for the species, lists of examined specimens, taxonomic notes, and photographic images for the studied species. This paper also presents the first occurrence of Stigmaphyllon acuminatum for the State of São Paulo. Additionally, we present a discussion on the evidence provided by Malpighiaceae corroborating the occurrence of past and present cerrado fragments within the Paraíba River Valley.

Abstract Herbarium-based studies and extensive field work revealed the existence of a new species in the genus Manihot which is restricted to the municipality of Itirapina, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Characteristics such as the size and morphology of the leaves and bracts were important to recognize M. irregularis as a new taxon. Description, illustration, as well as comments on its morphology, distribution, conservation status, and a key for the identification of Manihot species for the state of São Paulo are presented.

RESUMO No contexto da conservação biológica, os elevados níveis de degradação ambiental têm como origem principal a expansão histórica da fronteira agrícola brasileira, fenômeno particularmente intenso na Mata Atlântica. Neste contexto, o Laboratório de Ecologia e Restauração Florestal da Universidade de São Paulo desenvolve, desde 1998, o Programa de Adequação Ambiental e Agrícola de Propriedades Rurais (PAAA). O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma avaliação da efetividade ambiental e socioeconômica do citado programa, identificando seus principais sucessos e deficiências. Após a avaliação, verificou-se que o programa obteve benefícios ambientais e socioeconômicos diversos, como a produção de 60,000 a 300,000 mudas de espécies nativas por propriedade, além da geração de 106 empregos diretos e a doação anual de 16,000 a 120,000 mudas. Os resultados do PAAA implantado em diferentes propriedades servem como subsídio para fortalecer a pressão pela criação de políticas públicas para potencializar as ações de regularização ambiental e agrícola tanto no Estado de São Paulo, quanto em propriedades rurais localizadas em outros Estados do Brasil.

ABSTRACT In the context of biological conservation, the high levels of environmental degradation has mainly originated from the historic expansion of the Brazilian agricultural frontier, phenomenon particularly intense in the Atlantic Forest. The Laboratório de Ecologia e Restauração Florestal of the Universidade de São Paulo has been developing, since 1998, the Programa de Adequação Ambiental e Agrícola de Propriedades Rurais (PAAA). The research’s goal was to evaluate the environmental and socioeconomic effectiveness of the developed program, identifying its main successes and failures. After evaluating the program, it was established that it has obtained several environmental and socioeconomic benefits, such as the production from 60,000 to 300,000 seedlings, the generation of 106 jobs and the annual donation of 16,000 to 120,000 seedlings per program. The results of the evaluated PAAA can be used as a subsidy to strengthen the pressure for the creation of public policies to enhance the agricultural and environmental regularization actions in the State of São Paulo and in rural properties located in other States of Brazil.

Na família Euphorbiaceae o gênero Manihot destaca-se, principalmente, pela complexidade taxonômica. Trata-se de um gênero neotropical, com 98 espécies distribuídas do Texas até a Argentina. No Brasil, a região do Planalto Central, em especial os Estados de Goiás e Minas Gerais, e o da Bahia no Nordeste podem ser considerados os centros de diversidade do táxon. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi elaborar a monografia do gênero Manihot no Estado de São Paulo. Foram encontradas dez espécies do gênero Manihot: Manihot anomala Pohl, M. caerulescens Pohl, M. fruticulosa Pohl, M. gracilis Pohl, M. grahamii Hook., M. inflata Müll. Arg., M. jolyana Cruz, M. pilosa Pohl, M. procumbens Müll. Arg. e M. tripartita (Spreng.) Müll. Arg. Neste trabalho propõe-se que M. jolyana Cruz e M. handroana Cruz sejam tratadas como uma única espécie, sendo, portanto, proposta a sinonimização.

Among Euphorbiaceae, the genus Manihot stands out primarily by its taxonomic complexity. It is a Neotropical genus with 98 species distributed from Texas to Argentina. In Brazil, the region of Planalto Central, especially the states of Minas Gerais and Goiás,and the state of Bahia in the Northeast region can be considered the centers of diversity forthe taxon. The aim of this study was to prepare a monograph of the genus Manihot in São Paulo State. Ten species of the genus Manihot were found: Manihot anomala Pohl, M. caerulescens Pohl, M. fruticulosa Pohl, M. gracilis Pohl, M. grahamii Hook., M. inflata Müll. Arg., M. jolyana Cruz, M. pilosa Pohl, M. procumbens Müll. Arg., and M. tripartita (Spreng.) Müll. Arg. In this synopsis, it is proposed that M. jolyana Cruz and M. handroana Cruz would be treated as a single species, therefore,we propose the synonymization.
